FILMMAKER

DEAR

DID YOU KNOW?

In June 2003 Met Film School opened its doors to its first short course in filmmaking, the brainchild of Thomas Hoegh and Luke Montagu. Ten years on, I have the enormous privilege of steering Met Film into its second decade. What I am most proud of are the achievements of our students. During this year four feature films written, directed or produced by Met graduates will have had commercial theatrical releases, three in the UK and one in France. Over 80% of graduates from our full-time programmes are working at the heart of the creative industries, in a mixture of freelance and permanent roles. They do so under the tuition of industry professionals within an institution which itself has produced nine commercially released feature films in the last five years, as well as postproducing many others. And all this within the infrastructure and atmosphere of Ealing Studios, the oldest continuously working studio facility for film production in the world.

To date, over 5000 students have come through our doors. This year we have 250 students on full time programmes (including our MA, BA and 6-month courses) as well as another 700 students across the year on short, part-time, and weekend courses. Between them they will make some 800 short films, 3 feature films, and 4 TV series this year alone. Our student body is diverse. Of our 2012-13 intake on full-time programmes, 50% are from the UK, 25% are from Europe, and 25% are from the rest of the world, and 42% are female. We have awarded Voices that Matter scholarships to students from Palestine, Gaza, the USA, London, Uganda, and South Africa. Whichever programme you choose, whether it’s long or short, general or specialist, a first degree, or a treat to yourself, we look forward to welcoming you to the school and helping you navigate your path through the wonderful and complex world of film.

10 YEARS

OF

MET

FILM

SCHOOL

5

Met Film School was founded in 2003. Since then we have grown substantially and now have an extensive campus at Ealing Studios, two shooting stages and a school in Berlin. Here are a few key moments from our story… Born in 2003 First 8-week course takes place in Clapham. 2005 Move into Ealing Studios. First unaccredited one-year course begins. Met Film acquires postproduction business. 2006 Met Film launches production business. 2007 25 students enrol on first BA programme with the then TVU (now known as University of West London). 2009 BA Practical Filmmaking launches with 119 enrolments. Meanwhile, Met Film Production’s Little Ashes and French Film are released in the UK and other territories. 2010 Teddy Cherim and Kees van Nieuwkerk’s graduation film, Sterke Verhalen (Tall Stories), is released in 34 cities across Holland and Belgium. Met Film Production’s The Infidel opens in over 40 territories. 2011 Egill Kristbjornsson’s graduation film, Paper, premieres at Tribeca alongside Met Film Production’s Donor Unknown, which is then released in cinemas in the UK. 2012 Met Film Production’s Town of Runners, conceived and co-produced by graduate, Dan Demissie, opens in Tribeca and is released in cinemas in the UK by Dogwoof. Another Met Film School student, Perry Bhandal, sees his film, Interview with a Hitman, released by Kaleidoscope – a year after he pitched the idea at the school. Meanwhile, Met Film School Berlin opens. 2013 Commercial releases in the UK and Germany for Papadopoulos and Sons (graduate, Marcus Markou) and in France for White Lie (graduate, Nyima Cartier), and for Met Film Production films, Village at the End of the World, and The Great Hip Hop Hoax. Also, Ross Domoney’s graduation film, The High Price of Gold, wins top prize at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.

I FELL INTO STUDYING FILM, AND STARTED FROM KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT FILMMAKING. THOSE TWO YEARS I SPENT AT THE MET WERE THE MOST MEMORABLE AND FORMATIVE YEARS OF MY LIFE SO FAR. SINCE GRADUATING, I HAVE BEEN WORKING AS A CINEMATOGRAPHER.

RINA YANG BA (HONS) PRACTICAL FILMMAKING, 2010

In 2013 Over 1200 students will book a course with us. 50% of students on full-time programmes will be from the UK, and 42% will be female. Met Film School students will shoot some 800 short films, 3 feature films, and 4 TV series during the year. *82% of graduates of our full-time programmes are currently working in the creative industries. *May 2013 statistics

FILMMAKING IN LONDON

WHY STUDY FILMMAKING IN LONDON?

1 2 3 4 5 9

The UK is the third busiest filming production centre in the world and the capital is the epicentre of activity. (Film London 2013) Since Film London was launched in 2004 filming in the capital has risen by a massive 30% making it one of the world’s busiest filming cities. (Film London 2013) From the swinging London streets of Alfie, to contemporary movies such as 28 Days Later to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the city has been a unique backdrop to an enormous range of films. London has also been the key location for some world famous Oscar winning movies over the last decade including The Iron Lady and The King’s Speech. Studying in London means you have access to a huge range of filmmaking resources. London houses the British Film Institute, The Cinema Museum, The Kubrick Archives and The London Film Museum.

6 7 8 9 10

The capital also boasts one of the world’s most vibrant art-house cinema scenes and a multitude of film clubs.

London has a broad film festival scene and the city hosts over 40 film festivals annually. (British Council 2013)

The capital is also a great place to find work in the film industry; with the UK’s largest film studios based either within or in easy reach of London. These include: Pinewood, Ealing, Shepperton and 3 Mills studios. Being a student in London will allow you to experience one of the most diverse cities in the world, where more than 300 languages are spoken and a wealth of different cultures and communities live side by side. It doesn’t matter how long you live in London you’ll never see it all. There’s always something new happening. No matter how long or short you stay, London will fuel your creativity!

MET FILM SCHOOL ABOUT BERLIN BUFA

STUDYING IN BERLIN

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Met Film School opened its doors to budding filmmakers nearly ten years ago, and following its success we decided to launch a second campus in Berlin at the heart of independent filmmaking. Met Film School Berlin follows exactly the same ethos as our London School, offering an intensive practical filmmaking experience taught by industry professionals in an active film studio. Students are able to feel completely integrated within the Berlin filmmaking community, working in an environment that is steeped in cinematic and filmmaking history. Classes are primarily taught in English, in accordance with our accreditation with the University of West London, however we will be offering some of our short courses in German from Autumn 2013.

Berlin is an exciting, cosmopolitan cultural hub that continues to attract filmmakers and artists from around the world. Berlin has a strong film, TV and creative media start-up community: together they make up a professional workforce of over 300,000.

Berlin is an affordable option for our International students choosing to study within Europe. A good standard of accommodation is available at relatively low-cost and living expenses are also kept low, with an all-day ticket for public transport costing around €6. Non-EU students are also able to work 180 half days per year (four hours a day) while they study with us, making it a really attractive destination for international study.

Met Film School Berlin is based at BUFA; the studio that has been home to film productions since the Weimar Republic and is one of the oldest film studios in Europe. The school’s location enables students to have first-hand experience of a working film studio on a day-to-day basis, and also places them in the heart of the city. Today, BUFA is an active film studio, whose stages offer a wealth of filming opportunities for productions – Greenscreen, live-TV studio set up, standing sets used for TV production and a large stage for commercial use. The studio is home to in-house production companies, a camera / lighting rental house, a prop house, a set building company and postproduction facilities.

Filmmakers from all around the globe are attracted to Berlin with around 300 films being shot here each year. The Berlin International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world with an emphasis on showcasing new filmmakers and independent film productions. Courses offered at Met Film School Berlin:

MET GO

(MET GRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES)

Met GO is the team at Met Film School dedicated to helping recent graduates take their first steps in their professional careers within the film, television and creative industries. Met GO aims to support graduates to gain substantive experience within the industry both through employment and in entrepreneurial roles; to support student films in festivals and commercially, and to maintain ongoing relationships with our graduates. Met GO has three distinct functions; Met GO Festivals, Met GO Agency and Met GO Productions.

MET GO FESTIVALS

MET GO AGENCY

MET GO PRODUCTION

Met GO Festivals was launched to help students navigate the festival and commercial world of film to maximise opportunities for their films. We provide information and advice to our students and graduates on film festival strategy. In addition, we select a crop of films annually, which we feel have uniquely strong opportunities to succeed critically or commercially and manage their film festival strategies.

Met GO Agency connects graduates with full-time jobs, freelance contracts, internships and placements. It helps graduates establish a network of contacts through Met Film School’s relationships with industry partners.

Met GO Production works with external clients at competitive rates employing graduates to produce work, who in turn employ other students and graduates to deliver projects. Projects are mentored by experienced Met Film School professionals and overseen by the Met GO team. Film commissions to date have come from the corporate and charitable sectors.

A few recent highlights of 2013 film festival successes include:

“IT WAS A JOY HAVING (MET FILM SCHOOL GRADUATE) CHRISTINA GARNER WORKING WITH US. SHE HAD A BRIGHT ENTHUSIASM, AND DILIGENT COMMITMENT TO THE TASK, THAT WAS LAUDABLE.”

To welcome the DVD release of the Met Film Production French Film, writer Aschlin Ditta led a masterclass discussing his career and the differences working on feature and television projects. Ditta has written three series and two specials of The Catherine Tate Show and won Best Screenplay at the Monte Carlo Film Festival.

SIR ALAN PARKER CBE

Yates’ career includes renowned TV series State of Play; whilst his 2005 feature Girl in the Café was BAFTA and Emmy award winning. Yates is also one of the most commercially successful British directors in recent years having helmed films in the Harry Potter franchise including The Order of the Phoenix, The Half Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows parts one and two.

Director John Landis visited the school to talk about his career and latest movie Burke and Hare filmed at Ealing Studios. With a directorial career spanning four decades, Landis’ films have gone on to become some of the most popular movies of all time such as An American Werewolf in London and The Blues Brothers.

We organize a number of masterclasses throughout the year to inform our students and enhance their studies with industry insights. We’ve welcomed a variety of guests to Met Film School, here are just a few…

British screenwriter Hossein Amini visited Met Film School whilst at Ealing Studios working on his directing debut, Working Title’s Two Faces of January. Following the acclaimed success of last year’s cult neo-noir crime thriller Drive, for which Amini was nominated for several awards for best Screenplay adaptation, Amini’s move into directing comes at a focal point in his career. His words of advice to Met Film School students - Be true to your voice and persevere through the times when your work is rejected.

Writer, Director and Actor Judy Morris (Happy Feet, Eye of the Storm) took part in a Q&A session with Met Film students, providing an insight into her career and how she got into the business with her lively “just do it” attitude. The key theme of the Q&A was “Be relentless” and never to believe your own publicity because fortunes can change so quickly.

Writer and Director Kirk Jones visited Met Film School to talk about his career and experience shooting feature projects, Waking Ned and Everybody’s Fine, starring Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore. Jones’ debut feature film Waking Ned made an unprecedented impact on the global box office and he has since directed Nanny McPhee starring Emma Thompson.

As outgoing Chair of Film London and expresident of production at 20th Century Fox, Lieberson is a prolific figure in the film industry. His visit to the school gave students the chance to hear the views of a major industry figure and gain an insight into the business of filmmaking.

OUR FACILITIES

CAMPUS

SHOOTING CAMERAS LOCATIONS

LIGHTING & SOUND

Regardless of their study programme we encourage students to be resourceful and pragmatic when it comes to production planning, as these are skills that will be transferable to all types of productions.

The main Met Film School campus is located onsite at Ealing Studios. Lessons take place in our teaching rooms or, if they include shooting exercises, around campus. Aside from scheduled teaching sessions, students have access to the school to continue working on their projects independently. Students store their rushes on portable hard drives and they can use one of our 100+ Apple workstations to edit whenever the school is open.

Met Film School has its own sound stage located within the Ealing Studios lot which is used for various practical workshops and teaching sessions; a multicamera studio and gallery. In addition to the sound stage, students at Met Film School will experience a range of shooting environments. As well as our Ealing Studios campus, students also have access to our smaller studio located near our main site at Warwick Road - the space offers a number of shooting possibilities and is used for teaching and practical exercises.

Our kit room offers all the equipment that students require to set up the basics for their shoot. This includes three-point lighting systems, sound kits and grips. Our kit room also holds boom poles, zeppelins, radio mics, hard drive sound recorders, mixers, dedo lights, flo lights, 1k and 2k fresnel lights and a range of dollies. A complement of lighting grip equipment (c-stands, magic arms, flags and polyboard) is also available to help students learn the craft of lighting.

Our kit room is equipped with a range of sound, camera and lighting kits for students on their films, as well as exercises throughout the courses. Students on our longer programmes will act as crew on each other’s films, supported by external professionals where appropriate. By taking on a range of on-set roles, students gain the wellrounded production experience needed to aid their development as independent filmmakers.

27

In addition, we aim to provide additional support for those starting higher education at Met Film School. We offer students on our accredited courses a complimentary and voluntary online course to help them get to know their fellow students, the school, our virtual learning environment and of course the language of filmmaking. We feel that this course provides our students with a valuable induction to the school, with long-lasting benefits.

We have a wide range of camera facilities, the Sony EX3 or equivalent is an industry workhorse, capable of stunning pictures. Students on our one and two year courses will also receive training on large sensor cameras, such as the Red One and the Sony F3. Our dedicated production team is available to assist students in selecting the most appropriate resources.

FOUR-WEEK DIRECTING

THREE-WEEK EDITING (AVID)

From Story to Screen in Eight Weeks is our longest running course and is designed to provide you with a solid foundation in filmmaking. This programme will provide you with practical experience in all of the key areas of filmmaking and culminates in the production of your own short film. It covers the essential craft areas of screenwriting, use of camera and sound, casting and directing actors, editing and script development. This is an intensive programme and is ideal for those considering a change in career.

Most documentary filmmakers these days are expected to be both self-shooters and self-editors. As a result, we will train you to use professional digital cameras and to edit on professional software. With the guidance of an experienced documentary filmmaker you will have the unique opportunity to research, write, produce and direct your own short film. You will review the history of the documentary and analyse examples of successful films in the marketplace today.

Four-Week Directing covers a comprehensive range of filmmaking skills, allowing you to explore the processes of visual storytelling whilst working with actors, interpreting scripts, devising narrative storylines and developing your understanding of the technical aspects of film production. You will cover cinematography and editing and will focus on improving your directing skills, equipping you with an independent approach to filmmaking. The course culminates with you shooting a short scene for a film.

Editing lies at the heart of filmmaking and calls for knowledge of film grammar and storytelling techniques. You will receive high-level instruction in how to use the editing interface of Avid® Media Composer and then practice your editing skills, first by cutting the rushes to a complete professionally made short, then by editing the rushes to scenes from a well-known feature film. If you pass the examination, you will earn AVID certification.

ACTING FOR FILM LEVEL 1

ACTING FOR FILM LEVEL 2

ACTING FOR FILM LEVEL 3 INTRODUCTION TO (FIGHTING FOR FILM) CINEMATOGRAPHY

Acting for film is our screen-acting course and has been developed for people who are serious about becoming a film actor, or wish to develop existing acting skills for the medium of film, though no previous experience is required. Taught by an acting coach and professional film director, you will act in numerous filmed exercises that will be analysed in class so that you can learn from your mistakes and improve your performances as the course progresses. You will also learn what it’s like to be on the other side of the camera by directing and acting as crew (operating the camera and recording sound) on a number of short exercises.

This course has been developed for actors who want to build on the skills they have learned through their experience of film acting or those who have taken our level 1 programme. One-to-one and group sessions will be supplemented with networking opportunities with professional directors, casting directors and producers. Whether your aim is to get a place at drama school, find an agent, or enter the industry, you will receive guidance from a professional acting coach and director to help you achieve your goal. The course will culminate in the screening of a film that you will have created during the four weeks. Students who have not taken the Level 1 programme will be asked to supply a CV and showreel to demonstrate their screen acting experience.

This is a four-week course where you learn fighting techniques applied to acting for film. You will build an understanding of how these techniques work with visual production of action and combat sequences. These skills will be applied to working in a greenscreen and a motion capture environment. You will be applying the techniques you have acquired in Level 1 and 2 Acting and combining them with specialist physical acting skills. You will learn how to create the illusion of fighting safely and reliably, whilst appearing ‘realistic’ for camera. You will also build an understanding of the creative and technical skills of fighting for film, exploring the physical story-telling and dramatic intention of violence.

This full-time programme provides a comprehensive introduction to the technical and creative use of camera lights and audio. Introduction to Cinematography covers a range of areas that form the technical basics of cinematography: taking full, manual control of industry standard digital cameras, the selective use of large sensor cameras, focus pulling, camera movement, using dolly and track and lighting for narrative and pack shots. You will be given the chance to apply these skills in filmed scenarios to enhance your working knowledge of cinematography.

FILM PRODUCING 101

DSLR FOR PROFESSIONAL FILMMAKING

ADVANCED DSLR FOR PROFESSIONAL FILMMAKING

MAKE A MUSIC VIDEO

Producing is a craft that many people starting out in filmmaking don’t understand or are intimidated by. Our Film Producing 101 course aims to demystify this field and provide students with the basics of film producing. It also aims to show students ways they can develop their producing skills in the future, either working on short or feature productions. This weekend course will draw upon the many considerations producers face when embarking on a new project. It also introduces the key skills, qualities and know-how a producer needs to succeed in the filmmaking industry.

The DSLR course is designed for those with a working understanding of the principals of cinematography or stills photography that want to apply this knowledge specifically to shooting with digital SLR cameras. You will learn how to get the best from a DSLR camera and how to make use of a selection of accessories specifically designed for video shooting on stills cameras. Through a range of creative exercises you will discover the pros and cons of working with these systems and how to avoid some of the most common pitfalls.

The Advanced DSLR for Professional Filmmaking course is designed for students who have previously completed the DSLR for Professional Filmmaking course, or those with an extensive DSLR and/or cinematography background. This programme covers areas from focus and operating, to sound sync and postproduction workflows. The aim of this programme is to provide you with the fundamental knowledge to shoot and finish DSLR video footage to its highest standard.

Music videos are a great way to access the film industry, and provide you with a creative calling card for future work. Although budgets for music videos are somewhat ‘challenging’, the onset of digital filmmaking has enabled directors to achieve great filmic looks with the right know-how. Our Make a Music Video weekend course will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills to devise and shoot an effective music video.
