We were cruising the Metaverse recently and came across this tasty little item you can see above these words.

How sick does it look! It shoots magical lights out of the front in three different modes, so you can regularly switch up your vibe as you cruise down the hill. The manufacturer also spelt skooter with a k, so you know this thing has got some sass and is going to rip. Not only rip, but grip. Not only grip, but super grip! You wouldn’t be able to get off this hog even if you tried. Imagine the street spots you could take down with it. Kinked rails, beware. This piece of insanity also folds down, so you can easily take the party with you wherever you go.

I suppose when you think about it, at a very base level, making fun of gravity is actually exactly what snowboarders do. Huh. That’s actually quite a nice observation. Maybe we should get rid of ‘Hold Fast Tweak Hard’ and change the magazine’s slogan to ‘Making fun of Gravity’. Let’s stick a pin in that one for now while we negotiate with Sledsterz, but don’t forget that next time you’re out riding, you’re actually dicking around with the fundamental forces of the universe.

What the fuck has winning anything got to do with anything in snowboarding? Why, how, and when did snowboarding become so fucking seeped in the utter repugnant bile that is performancebased structured competition. Is there anything more futile than which flippy spinny human did more spinny flips than the other spinny flippers? What the fuck has any of it got to do with any of it. When did we bundle up the pure joy of sliding sideways down a slope, the thrill of acceleration, the utter joy of the g-force of a cranked turn, the stomach-dropping weightlessness of floating off a cliff and sell it off to the highest bidder?

And don’t even start with all that “FIS ruined it” crap. As soon as it went beyond racing your mates to the apres & loser buying the beers, it was fucked. Anything beyond pure bragging rights or one-upmanship among peers has led, inevitably, to the corporate-run, nutrition-based sports psychology fuckery that we have now.

Ah, but what about the thrill of progression? The cutting edge of the sssssspppppoooorrrrtttt. Well, actually, maybe sport is ok, as the dictionary definition of sport is as such: “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”.

And that would all be well and good if we left it at entertainment, but we couldn’t, could we? No. We had to throw money into it. Win win win, cash in in in. Ooooo aren’t we so wonderful in our capitalist little “soul sport” ya yaa ya ya! Be the best. Pff ff ff ff…. I might puke if I keep thinking about it.

Luckily though, most of this shite has got bugger all to do with most people who are misguided enough to read this rant. In fact, most of you might absolutely love the contest circus. The excitement of your hero twizzle prizzing more proficiently than the other twizzle prizzer, and you know what. That’s fine. There’s enough room for you dipshits in this beautiful thing called snowboarding for all of us. No matter your shape, your colour, your creed, music taste, sexual preference, whatever or whoever you are. That is a beautiful thing. No matter how much we try and fuck it up with rules and money and national funding and medals and accolades, we are still just a bunch of dipshits sliding on tea trays down hills. As long as we don’t forget that, there will still be the turns, the tweaks, the freaks and all that gives us the great tapestry of shred.

Don’t get me wrong as well. Pushing yourself to try that new trick, hit a bigger rail or riding a gnarlier line is fucking awesome. That feeling of going out of your comfort zone and getting away with it is quintessential to snowboarding and always will be, and fuck, those contests can be fun both in and off the hill. But can we somehow just stop blowing the trumpet of the gods about it all? Go snowboarding, tell your friends how rad it is, beat them to the apres ski and do it all again. It’s fucking rad.

What is the Tao Of Beginnings?

The Tao of Beginnings is the video celebrating the release of Drake Snowboard’s first unisex line of boards and bindings. Three girls and three guys filming in the streets and a backyard park for a week.

Who’s in it?

We had SkrrrNata, Veroniqi Hanssen, Sophia ‘Klaus’ Schroll, Alex Stewart, Jake and Joe Simpson.

What were the vibes like while filming? Different to what you’ve done before, or similar?

Vibes were brilliant, and it was just the same as we’ve always done, everyone getting stuck in and going as hard as they could in such a short time period.

Where did you guys shoot?

We shot at Wena’s Backyard Park, in the Czech Republic. This dude and his family are legends and they have created the perfect backyard set-up, including a drag lift, kicker line and jib line, with complete freedom to do what ever you want. We stayed at their Airbnb on location, and we also popped out of the house for a few days of street riding.

Highlights from filming?

Lapping the backyard park with everyone on the same board & bindings was pretty special.

Any disasters while shooting or things that didn’t work out?

The usual suspects! Injuries, kickouts, tears, tantrums. Nothing the crew couldn’t handle with ease.

What lessons did you learn?

That teamwork really does make the dream work, and now more than ever the girls and boys of our sport need to help each other out because we can all learn from each other!

Snowboards – always good to have on you.

Lens wipe (spray and lens puff not pictured) but, always good to have a way to make sure your lenses/gear are as clean as possible.

Canon 24-70mm 2.8 EF – Great all around lens. I use it in so many instances from lifestyle, portraits, riding, and everything in between.

Canon 15mm EF – Ah the fisheye lens. This is probably my most used lens in the bag. I love being right up in the action with the rider and really feeling the energy of them trying and successfully walking away from the trick.

Canon 50mm RF – Great portrait lens. Pretty cheap and high quality.

One of the snacks I currently have in my bag, I also like to always have some candy on me and some sort of energy bar. More days than not, you can’t walk away and grab food quickly so, it’s important to have something on hand.

Small rig multi tool – Has a little bit of everything you may run into needing. Flathead, phillips head, some allen wrenches etc.

Fuji X100F – LOVE this little camera.

I carry it on me for more candid onthe-go type shots.

Extra batteries for the Canon R5 – Since this camera has an electronic sensor the batteries go FAST. Nice to have a few extra ones on hand.

Skate tool and wax for spots – you never know when this is needed and I love to lend out a helping hand to the rider.

Godox transceiver for Godox lights – You use this to fire off your strobes.

Tiffen bag has extra memory cards on hand. I have a CF express card and some SD cards in there.

Canon 70-200 2.8 EF lens – Another one of my go-to lenses. Must have in your kit.

Canon R5 and adapter – Made this switch to mirrorless last year and I am loving this camera. I personally didn’t notice any lag with the adaptor on for my EF lenses.

Godox AD100 Pro flash and and not pictured the AD 200 Pro flash – these are perfect when you need an extra pop of light but you don’t have the whole light kit with you.

What is Save A Brain?

Save A Brain is a nonprofit organization that shares education about traumatic brain injuries, concussions, and overall brain health.

How did it start, and who is behind it?

It was all started by Kelsey Boyer.

She became passionate about head injuries after sustaining a TBI that resulted in brain surgery. It was scary seeing her go through all of it. Even after she was “healed”, there were a lot of issues she had—emotional issues like depression, anxiety, and overall mood regulation. None of us knew much about the brain or brain injuries at this time. And many doctors and therapists didn’t have much information to heal past her plateaus. She started doing her own digging, googling, and asking around. Our friend told her about a

clinic for people who have sustained head injuries. That was the key to really helping her heal. Going through all of this lit a fire to help those around us get the information they need to heal and take care of their brains. Save A Brain is here to fill that void of knowledge and eventually help those who are financially unable to get treatment.

That one is a further-out goal.

How has the response been from people so far?

Overall the community response so far has been amazing. We have been getting so much love within the snowboarding community and other action sports. We feel so grateful for all the brands and people supporting us.

Tell us about the concussion cookbook.

Chelsie Moore created the cookbook. She is an integrative and

functional medicine nutritionist. I had no idea what that meant before learning more about head injuries.

This kind of means having food and your diet play a significant role in your healing. Chelsie went through post-concussion syndrome herself.

She tried many different avenues of recovery, but diet is what helped her most. She created this cookbook full of amazing anti-inflammatory recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Most are easy to make too. You’ll love the beginning part if you geek out on food like I do. It talks about the food you should include and why, or the “forget ‚em foods”.

Foods you should avoid while recovering. It’s not a magic cure, but it’s a great place to start with your brain health. Shouts out to Morgan Scibetta for the beautiful cover design and for laying the whole damn thing out!

Are there any other organizations out there doing similar things to Save A Brain?

There are a couple of nonprofits that focus on the brain, but none really fill the gap that we saw. Love Your Brain is one of those that we look up to. They focus more on using yoga and meditation to cope with head injuries. That organization is incredible.

What’s your biggest challenge in raising awareness about concussions and TBI’s?

The biggest challenge is getting people to understand the full gravity of what a head injury affects. Not only to the person that sustained one, but it’s also life-changing for the family and friends close to them. It’s not an injury you can see physically. People who have gone through post-concussion syndrome or a significant head injury may look fine on the outside. But in their head, it can be a drastically different story.

Are there many central sources of information on concussions and TBI’s?

From our perspective, there weren’t

many places to find information about clinics that a person could go for treatment. We have been starting to build out a resource tap on our website.

How can people help support what you’re doing?

For now, I think the biggest help is sharing our message. Sharing something on social or talking to your friends to get educated about head injuries. This organization is meant for everybody, whether you wear a helmet or not. Donating, or buying our merch, anything helps on the financial level. It’s surprisingly a little pricey to keep a nonprofit organization going.

What’s coming up in the future for Save A Brain?

We have too many ideas sometimes!

Currently, we are focused on sharing education about head injuries and brain health and creating a community for survivors and caregivers. Once we have more consistent donors, the next goal is to help individuals financially receive treatment. Some of the newer therapies that work well

are extremely pricy. A lofty goal is opening up our own brain rehab center one day.

Last words are yours: None of this would have worked without each person on the Save A Brain team. Most of the women have full-time jobs also and still put their hearts into this. Kelsey Boyer has made this all a reality, she’s just a complete badass. She does so much to get people to believe in this cause. Micah Anderson also works a full-time job and still brings so much with marketing, honest feedback, and much more! Morgan Scibetta, another with a full-time job, designed our logo, our fun couple runs of merch, and pretty much everything design. I feel proud to work alongside all these amazing women. I hope our message keeps getting to those who need it. Getting a head injury can feel lonely, but you are never alone.

What was your motivation for making Tracks?

In the autumn of 2019, we were at a lecture in our home town Kiruna, where invited scientists spoke about the consequences of climate change in our region. Even though we had been concerned about the human impact on our planet for many years, this was the first time we heard someone describe global warming as a factor that will affect our daily lives - not only in the future but also right now. They told us about some dramatic changes that had already occurred up here, which had taken place more in the winter time than during summer. What was most startling was the speed at which they had happened and that these changes were going to accelerate even more. Since winter and snowboarding are huge parts of our lives, we felt that we needed to tell this story in some way.

What was your biggest learning while making the film?

Making a documentary is way more

fun than we thought it would be, but also a lot more time-consuming.

So we could never have done this without the big support that we got from our friends and families.

We also learned that rocks are hard, follow-cams always end in faceplants and that you need to push rec to start filming.

What are the biggest changes in the environment that you’re seeing happen in Riksgränsen?

That the weather is changing more often during the season, with a lot of bad weather and more zero crossings. This sometimes has resulted in a lot of snow but also in a lot more rain, which we did not have so often before.

What do you hope people take away from the film?

That our winters are both a lot frailer and more important than most of us might know. We also hope that we can show many beautiful aspects of winter, which hopefully inspires you to go out and enjoy it even more.

How are you feeling about the future?

We are optimistic but, at the same time, a bit frustrated that climate change is still such a low priority in the public opinion and among many world leaders. It is easy to find yourself filled with climate anxiety and feelings of hopelessness, but there are endless possibilities to make a much better world if we just unite globally and decide to do it. It may sound hard, but the global cooperation during covid-19 proved that such things are possible.

Last words are yours: We think that everyone can find their own way to make a change.

For us, we feel that we have a tool as filmmakers and snowboarders to do so. For some, it might be to lift the question at work or in school, for others to join a political party or to reduce their own carbon footprint and inspire others to do the same.

Eight minutes. That’s how fast the weather changes in Iceland. At least that was the result of our amateur meteorological observations from the ten days we spent there.

If the weather is shit, just wait eight minutes and it’ll change to something else. It might change from really rainy to really windy, but just wait another eight minutes and the sun will probably come out.

I suppose we are on an island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, so we can’t be too surprised that the weather is extreme.

Henry Jackson told me he was here once in a huge storm, and the road blew away. No joke, the wind was so strong it blew pieces of the actual road away. It’s common knowledge in Iceland that you should always hold on to your car door when you open it, incase the wind gets hold of it and it smacks into something that it shouldn’t, like a child, or a defenceless animal.

Let’s backtrack a bit.

Last week, my phone rang. Caller ID: Ylfa Rúnarsdóttir. She tells me that Reykjavík has snow, and that she’s going there with Maria Thomsen and Nora Beck, and asks if I want to come and shoot. Is that even a question?

Yes. Yes I want to come. Three of the sickest street riders out there?

I don’t care where they’re going, if there’s a chance to come and shoot, I’m there. Ok, skip forward a bit. I’ve just landed and been picked up by Ylfa and Maria, they’re driving Ylfa’s mum’s Mitsubishi Land Cruiser. Ylfa

is pretty small, and she looks even smaller in the big truck, with the seat as far forward as it can go. It’s baller though, and she suits it.

On the forty-five minute drive from the airport, I’m informed that there was a huge rainstorm that morning which is wiping out snow. Ok, no

big deal, it looks like there’s still lots around so we should be all good.

Then I hear that Maria’s board bag is lost somewhere in transit, and that she also tweaked her knee a little bit a few days previously.

Ok ok, she’s not out of the game, but she might not hit anything too heavy. Think positive though. Then I hear that Nora rode into a tree yesterday and went to hospital, fearing she’d broken her shoulder.

Ok ok ok. It turns out she hadn’t broken it, but had landed directly on an older injury, and it felt like shit. Ok ok ok ok. There’s one rider left, is it actually ok..? Ylfa doesn’t seem to be damaged in any way, and she’s unfailingly positive, so I put my trust in the fact that the crew is rad, and things will work out. For the most part, they did.

Ylfa’s parents got COVID, and then so did Ylfa, but the snow stayed on the ground and everyone in the crew stacked a bunch of quality clips, documented by Dave Walcer and Gunshow.

More importantly, I got to see these three women riding in person. This was the main reason I came, and was a real treat to see them tearing up the streets. Ylfa sees spots and tricks differently, and I like that. Maria’s warmup tricks are just as sick as the trick she actually wants to film, and I really like that. Nora is either going to get an insane clip, or she’s going to eat absolute shit. That scared me a bit, but fuck it, that’s her style, and I’m down.

Massive thanks to Ylfa’s parents for hosting us, feeding us, treating us like family, and hiding in their rooms when they had COVID so we could enjoy their house. We were treated far better than we deserved, and probably far better than we ever will be again. Also huge shoutout to Gunshow for driving, showing us spots, giving us his time and being an all-round legend. Snowboarding wouldn’t work without people like him. YLFA RÚNARSDÓTTIR Baby Yoda, Spiderman and many other legends showed up to Maria’s spot this stormy day in February. The reason for that was ‘Öskudagurinn’ (The Ash day). It’s an Icelandic tradition where the kids dress up and get to be whatever they want for a day.

The original purpose and meaning of the day were lost centuries ago, so as a kid, this day meant dressing up, singing songs and eating candy.

“Slá köttinn úr tunnunni” meaning “Beat the cat out of the barrel”, is a part of the tradition. A barrel or a box filled with candy hanging from a rope in the ceiling. Everyone gets one blindfolded swing at it with a bat, and when it cracks open, the fight for the candy is on. Another tradition is singing songs for the workers at local businesses and getting candy in return.

I remember as a kid, I wanted to be multiple things at the same time, resulting in me creating some crazy outfits with my parents. A king-clown and a skeleton-cat-vampire are good examples. Yes, all over the place, but I would be so proud of my costumes that I didn’t care that no one knew what I was supposed to be. I was so excited about it as a kid that I couldn’t sleep for nights before the day finally arrived.

‘HOT COCO’, the name of our movie, originally started from stopping at gas stations (where you do most of your grocery shopping on rail trips) for snacks and hot beverages in between spots. We went to a lot of spots. We got a lot of hot chocolate. *A little backstory on the spelling.

Ylfa went to Las Vegas or somewhere like that, and she was showing us her pictures of the trip.

In one of these wholesome photos, possibly on The Strip, some woman was photobombing her, wearing a ridiculous shirt that read ‘COCO’. We knew instantly that this was the ‘HOT COCO’ we’d all spent so long talking about.

Country/continent combo. Like a cold Australia. My first foray into Ylfa’s homeland could easily be described as hectic. Between a lost board bag & my never failing ability to be dead weight, we were not off to a great start by the time Theo came to town on day seven.

Maria & Ylfa, bless their hearts, had been more than patient while I spent days sick, messed up my shoulder and generally did nothing but bring a bag of my own troubles halfway across the world. But between the never-ending storms and the covid outbreaks, we all managed to get through in one piece. Just maybe a little soggier than we went in.

I have never been to Iceland, so when Ylfa told me there was snow in her home town Reykjavík, I was down.

I love going to new places. After booking my flight, I started looking at

old Haldor and Eiki videos, but I don’t seem to see many rails. Ylfa calmed my nerves when her friend had let us in with a spot album, and there were tons of spots. I landed at 6am and my board bag didn’t show up, but we went straight to the bakery to look at spots and drink coffee to keep me going. At 9.30 it starts getting light

and we spot check the whole day.

We meet up with Gunshow (Gunnar), a true legend of Iceland, and I find a perfect c-rail that gets me really fired up.

There’s a storm warning for the next morning, and we realize that we can’t snowboard. It’s extremely windy (this

happened like three times in the two weeks we were there). We quickly learn from the Icelandic people that when the weather is wild, you go to the pool. The place is always packed.

On the seventh day, my snowboard finally showed up. The c-rail is on for a battle. I’m nervous and excited, and the weather is changing between

snow and rain. We set it up the night before, but the rain had melted the whole thing, so we built it again. I can’t remember how many hours I spent trying, but at some point, I have to take a break and go under the bridge to keep dry for a minute.

Everyone is cold, and I quickly realize that I have to keep moving. I can’t

remember how long it took me, but I’m stoked to land it and thankful to the crew for sticking it out with me in the wet and windy weather. This ended up being my favourite clip for the movie. *Ed: This shot is on the cover of the mag. Congrats Maria!

MD: What is Over Yonder and how did it start?

RF: The name came about because we just wanted to explore and go on adventures. Being away from home, seeing new shit. Just trying to go Over Yonder as much as possible. Brandon and I have worked together on multiple projects and have a similar style in what we’re trying to do in the winter - all around snowboarding, mainly focussed on backcountry. We’d got into a pattern of doing the same thing every year, just filming a videopart, and I think we both wanted to try and see what we could make that was different. We brainstormed for a while to see if we could come up with a way to put out videos all winter long. Just have a loose program,

see where snow was falling and do whatever makes sense at the time, with the intention of putting out a video a month.

BD: Finder kinda nailed it. My idea with the whole thing was just to ride whatever I felt like riding, with whoever was around me at the time.

RF: One of the things that made Over Yonder quite unique was that we didn’t have a set group of people we were trying to crew up with. As the winter progressed and snow fell, we would make plans and link up with whoever was around that area. It wasn’t like other things I’ve worked on in the past with a set crew and you all have to film together, even if you don’t really know each other.

This was a lot more authentic and

organic. It was just homies. It made it really fun to work on.

MD: Do you think having it as a web series helped you structure it and make a plan of attack? How was it different to full year project?

RF: I really like the series. It’s a lot of work to take on by myself as far as filming and editing. But one of the things that I’ve struggled with in the past is footage getting stale.

You spend all winter filming and you sit on it and edit all summer. It was kinda nice to go out, get the footage and pretty much immediately edit and turn something around. It kept everything more in the moment. It was hard, but also it felt a lot more authentic. Even if it’s more work, I think the video comes out better.

BD: Finder is a workhorse.

SB: We’re all amazed at what he does. It’s insane. To still be doing it all yourself is impressive.

MD: Brandon doesn’t really take days off, so we’re out there every day.

Twelve days straight on sleds.

RF: I heard it all season from people who watched the episodes, they were so impressed with Brandon.

But I don’t think they all really understand what it’s like to stack clips like that month after month. It’s not like when you’re filming a video part where you have an entire winter to film fifteen tricks. He’s putting down fifteen tricks every month.

It’s insane.

BD: Thanks guys, I appreciate that.

It was definitely a new aspect for this year. I’ve filmed for some movie projects in the past and sometimes you don’t know how late in the year you’ll start. Some people don’t start until January when the snow is actually around. We started in the first week of November and went through pretty much consistently until mid-May. Maybe without more than a few days break. Or at least I would take a break, Finder would still be on grind-mode editing.

Compared to a videopart it’s crazy.

For a videopart you can just stack all season and know your bag of clips is getting bigger and bigger. So it feels weird to work hard and stack

for a couple of weeks, and then know that in a week when the edit is done, you’ve got no clips and have to get straight back to it.

KM: It just didn’t get boring. You just put out what you got and what you think is sick. Like Finder said about clips getting stale, after a whole season of looking at your clips you start thinking that they’re not up to par. I think that’s the coolest part, you’re always hyped on the shit that you can get in a month and being able to share that. Of course the snow in the March clips might look better and you have to struggle in December and January to make shit happen, but with Over Yonder there’s no waiting, you’re just showing the dopest shit you could do in a month with the elements you were given.

SAMMY BLAZE STAYING JUST AHEAD OF SOME SERIOUS TROUBLE

RF: It was also more driven by the story. All of the other videos I’ve worked on have been action porn.

This was about trying to show the story each month and make it about more than the tricks. That’s more interesting for me too. When I watch videos now about mountaineers or rock climbers or snowboarders or whatever, I want to get a sense of who the people are. It’s cool that you guys can do these tricks, but who are you guys, and what goes into getting these clips? That was another thing that I liked about this project, just trying to tell more of a story.

still partying. I don’t know how they did it. Then we caught some high alpine street. Then Ryan caught covid. We had to get covid tests to fly out, and Finder tested positive.

It was a shitshow trying to extend our airbnb and change flights. We were extending it one day at a time because he kept failing tests. The owner got really suspicious and basically came to kick us out. I had to tell her that Ryan was there and had covid and couldn’t leave. So we ended up spending a good amount of budget just chilling at the start of the season.

MD: So Kyle, myself and Sammy and Keegan all jumped in with you guys in the middle of filming, when you were in Wyoming. But before we get into that let’s talk about some of your highlights from the trip to Europe.

MD: Was that the only covid issue during the season?

BD: So in Europe we’d only just got the green light for the project. Ethan threw his DIYX event and we thought we’d go out for that. It’s a street contest that isn’t really a contest, it’s more like a massive party with some snowboarding on the side *laughs*. It was insane. I would come home at 3.30am and would be the first one back while everyone was

RF: Yeah that was it.

BD: But Ryan got it good. Then he was straight back to work in Minnesota. We were going to go out there and ride the ropes, but they had this crazy snowstorm, which doesn’t usually happen in December. It snowed a foot and a half or so in the city, and we ended up getting five days of street footage with Benny Milam, Drayden Gardner and Garret McKenzie. Rob Roethler was there too, and Jesse Paul. For

sure there are a bunch of other names I should mention and I hope they’re not offended that I forgot, we just met so many people and it was sick to be able to link up with them all. And really fortunate that they were down to give us their clips and hop on board with us. I was stoked that we got to use their footage, and hopefully they were too. Then we went to Ukraine for the Double Triple contest which is a whole other story. It was rad to meet people over there and get a feel for their culture, and now they are experiencing this crazy war. It’s crazy to think about what they’re going through. Then after getting back to the US we did an avalanche course that Ride put on for us. We did that with Keegan Hosefros and Mason Lemery. T-Bird was there and a bunch of people came out, and that got us pretty psyched to ride snow and find snow.

From then on out we were just riding snowmobiles anywhere and everywhere we could that had snow with whoever was down.

MD: And then we joined in Wyoming.

It was my first time in the backcountry with these boys. Kyle taught me how to sled a week before, and keeping up with these dudes was wild. It was

so fun and sick and we stacked the fuck up.

RF: Sammy should tell us about the avalanche.

SB: Ok I’ll give ‘er hell. So these guys kept telling me about this zone and Finder was really talking it up.

Also don’t forget Kyle Harmon was there, shoutout to him for ripping.

So we got out there and I didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away by those badass mountains.

I don’t know about you guys, but I had no idea there was some gnarly shit back there. We were looking for landings but we didn’t want to fuck with any of them as some of the top layers were sliding.

KM: We knew there was some danger, we were looking at reports and digging pits and trying to learn what was sliding and what was not.

Then at the end of the week, Sammy started getting a little risky with the terrain.

SB: This pitch caught my eye, and I fell in love with it. It was pretty rowdy.

I kept looking at it and eventually found a way out. It was an 80ft cliff bend with a little funnel about a foot wide to get out. It was steep as fuck but I kept looking at it. While I was taking photos and checking it out and analysing it from different angles, the boys were riding similar aspects. I talked to them and we decided that if something did happen, it would be manageable.

KM: Everyone was in the position to help if something did happen. We were ready to go.

SB: I knew that there was a tree as a safe spot that I could hug into the first few turns if it slipped. You think about what can happen and weigh all the factors and piece together all your previous riding experience, and I tried to ride it exactly as I pictured.

I felt I rode it as safely as it could have been done. Maybe I could have landed a little better. But I got out of there and didn’t even realise that it had slid behind me.

his feet, and I started yelling ‘go go go’ and then he just slashed this huge turn as the whole mountain is collapsing behind him. I just about had a heart attack. The noise of the snow coming down was insane, like a rumbling freight train coming right at me. I had already started my sled and was prepping to get away from it and then he just flies past me. It was really fortunate that everything went down like it did.

KH: There was so much snow coming after you, that was fucking wild.

SB: That was definitely a wake up call. I felt comfortable to ride it because I had ridden stuff like it in the past with you guys there. That face was calling me, and talking about it with you guys did make me feel confident to do it. Landing and throwing up that cloud of snow, it was just a celebration and I had no idea it had slid. If you analyse the footage, the way that it felt was all gravy. I eased into the top face and I had a plan to make those two cut turns. The snow felt good and I let myself go past that tree and out into the exposed area above the cliff. That last turn I made before the cliff, that’s where the rug got swept out under the whole top layer. I didn’t feel that, I just went off the cliff and the landing was kinda peachy. So yeah, I wouldn’t ride something like that with just anyone around, and you guys were professional enough for me to feel comfortable to do it. So I apologise for putting any of you in a situation, I know you guys know how I feel about that. But it was a good learning experience and I appreciate you guys being there for me.

MD: And you didn’t even know, you were just doing pow slashes.

SB: You guys were all hollering so I just threw up a little slash.

BD: We knew we were working with some danger. There’s never no avalanche danger if the snow is good. And the face looked similar to a spot that Sammy had hit last year in Baker. Maybe that made us feel more comfortable than we should have been.

SB: That’s a good point.

BD: I trust Sammy as a person and a snowboarder, but he’s going to make his own decisions. We walked through every point where something could happen. There were no terrain traps, as long as he made it off the cliff with any sort of speed, he would be fine. As he drops the upper cliff face, I saw the face he was just on release and had an ‘oh shit’ moment. He landed and kinda splatted but got back on

RF: Brandon and I have put in four years of filming backcountry together and I had a little bit of experience with Absinthe before that, but I still feel like such a rookie and it’s experiences like that with Sammy that put it all into perspective. You can be as prepared as possible and learn all you can, but it comes down to your experience out there to really grasp what you need to know in order to be safe. The situation with Sammy was difficult for me because we had made all the right preparations.

We studied the snowpack and rode similar aspects, but it still slipped. I love filming backcountry the most because when somebody is inspired to ride a line, it’s so different to when they’re inspired to ride a rail.

Sometimes it feels like work in the streets or trying to get a jump clip.

It’s a formula you’re putting together and a means to an end. Sometimes riding a line can be so inspired, like

Sammy was, and that’s what makes it so fucking cool. We knew the risks and we were all a little hesitant, but he was so into it that we all got behind him. There was a time where I wasn’t going to use the clip. When you put yourself out there to the snowboard community you want to be respected and appreciated and only put out the best. I hesitated because we knew there was a risk, and we took it anyways. We decided that it was part of the story, and to leave it out would be not showing the true story. For me it was to humble myself. This is the growth of being in the backcountry, and sharing it might show other people to take it seriously, because it really is 80-90% understanding risk and learning about snow and mountains and avalanches.

MD: Always anything.

BD: Trust your gut too. I kind of had a bad feeling about Sammy’s line. He was stoked to hit it and I didn’t want to be a party pooper, but I wasn’t vocal enough. I wouldn’t normally have been waiting at the bottom of a line for someone, being ready in case it slides. I don’t usually sit there with my bag ready to go. Just looking back, trust your gut and come back another day.

RF: 100%. And that gut check comes from experience. You can’t learn that in the classroom.

KH: That shit was so scary. That was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.

SB: I almost feel that looking at it, it looks like it could have been this careless action where I just ‘brapped off this cliff. It was calculated, and I think it was good to share it and let

people know that we were thinking about the risks. We also have to take responsibility and talk about this to the snowboard community. At the end of the day it was my call to ride it, and maybe I should have backed off for the day and let it settle. Maybe not hit it at all. But that’s a tough one for snowboarders if you’re trying to ride something and pushing your limits, or in this case, pushing the limits of the snow. So that’s where you can’t really gamble. You can’t gamble with more than you can afford to lose.

So thanks guys again, it’s a pleasure to be in the backcountry with some young pros, and they really have the passion. These guys are the real deal sickos. They come from an olympic level background, and now getting into the backcountry, they really have the eye of the tiger. They look for things to ride that call to them, and ride them in their

BD: Oh yeah, then Keegan broke his back on the last day. That was kind of crazy.

KH: When that happened with my sled, I had that weird gut feeling before going up that slope. And I feel like I should have just trusted it and not gone up that thing. I had the same feeling for that avalanche.

When I’m really scared of stuff and we’re all making a decision together I think we just need to trust our guts and play it safe. There’s always

something else out there to ride that’s better and safer.

BD: That was crazy when you broke your back. We were in Wyoming and it was late spring, and we were having these crazy melt-freeze cycles. We had to go pretty high up to find good snow, so we were doing all these hill climbs which were nice during the day, but early morning are straight ice. Your track was just straight spinning, trying to get any traction it could. No one saw it, but Keegan’s sled flipped over and he hit his back. He was playing it pretty cool and in no way did we ever think that his back could be broken. He handled the pain really well. We gave him a ride back to the car that day, then went back up and finished what was pretty much last day of the season. Then we got the news that he broke his back, which was crazy.

KH: It was ok. I didn’t want to stop you guys, but I knew something was wrong and I just needed to get out there.

MD: I can’t believe we doubled you back over all those bumps and whoops.

KH: I knew I couldn’t just stay out there all day and let it get worse.

MD: What would you want other people to take away from something like that?

KH: That you should be prepared and it’s worth spending the extra money have a medical kit and a brace on the back of your sled. I don’t have a lot of that stuff for worst case scenarios, and that’s something we all need to try to get into more.

I think that’s the biggest takeaway I had from it. It could have been way worse. It wasn’t like I broke my spine or anything, it was the kind of like your lower back’s fins. Coming into next season I want to have this gear so everyone in our crew can be safe and can rely on each other when these moments happen. Thanks to Finder for getting me safely out of there and for everyone in the crew being honest and able to say whatever we need to say. You guys asked me if I wanted to keep going, and I said no, get me out of here right now. And you were all on my side to help.

KM: I feel like there’s a lot of trust between everyone and understanding if people aren’t feeling it or aren’t comfortable in a situation. We all work together to get to the spot and make sure it gets done. I think it’s cool that we all work together really well and respect each other’s opinions. It’s not like one person would act like they knew more than the others. We’re all learning together.

SB: When you spend enough time in the backcountry with a certain group you do learn what they can do and what everybody is comfortable with and what the crew is comfortable with. It is important to have your crew and go out with people that you trust.

I was so intimidated and had no confidence. I had confidence in my riding, but not navigating and understanding how to be ready, wake up and do the whole routine and being motivated to do these things. You are going to scare yourself in these situations, but you’ve got to live to learn. You can actually blast up that big hill, you can actually do all this stuff.

Just little things like Brandon showing us the new Fat Maps and stuff and knowing where you are and what you’re dropping into. I wasn’t even a part of Over Yonder

at the beginning of the year. You guys filmed your first episode and then I asked if I could come ride, and you guys just said yes.

It worked out perfect. I’m so happy you let me join, because backcountry is what I’m the most drawn to these days.

RF: It was a pleasure to hang with you for real. That’s what I was talking about earlier. One of my favourite things about filming is when someone in a crew is inspired to do something and it comes off in the video. It makes my job a thousand times easier. Keegan is one of those riders that when he gets inspired to ride something, it just fires up everyone around him. Hopefully we can do it again.

KH: Yeah.

MD: Kyle, anything to add?

KM: I guess this could be my announcement of retiring from competitive snowboarding. But I hope these guys do something next year because filming with them was a lot of fun. I definitely want to spend my winter hanging with Brandon and Finder as much as I can and just film and make dope shit with the boys.

I’m working on a couple of projects outside of snowboarding that I think will be pretty fun, and hopefully I can get all of you boys into. That’s where my head’s at.

RF: It’s more of the same. Just being able to film what inspires us with people who inspire us. As long as that’s what the project hinges on, I think we’ll be going in the right direction.

BD: Right on. I like that. Hopefully we can get the support and do the same thing, maybe make the team a bit bigger and maybe get some more photographers out more often and someone to help us with editing work or growing the team. Hopefully we can get out there and chase even more snow with even more people.

A

laska has long been heralded as the holy grail of snowboarding, where the world’s best riders would come to showcase their prowess, progress the sport and perform death defying feats of excellence. But that’s not why we were headed to the Last Frontier, and judging by the roster of riders on our trip, I think that will be pretty self-evident.

We amassed what could be described as the opposite of your typical all-star Alaskan freeride crew: Frank April, Marie-France Roy, and Erik Leon. For starters, Frank April is mostly known for his jibbing prowess in the streets of Quebec.

He’s more familiar with stairsets than spines and I’m not sure if he’s ever ridden a mountain with more than 100 feet of vertical descent. Erik Leon is a burgeoning, young pro with a promising career

ahead, but he’s also more well known for his handplant than he is for his big mountain riding. And then there’s Marie-France Roy, who… well…actually makes a lot of sense for an Alaskan freeriding trip. At least we had her skill and experience to lean on.

So why Akaska? And why this oddball crew? Long answer short, because breaking the mold has always felt good to me. Because we’re all old friends and most importantly, because watching Travis Rice double cork off of an Alaskan spine isn’t nearly as entertaining as watching Frank April tomahawk down one.

We decided to break the trip up into five distinct chapters, each defined by a different mode of transportation and access to the mountains. With each approach, we would build on the momentum of the previous mode

of transportation to travel deeper into the Alaskan backcountry.

We’d start with the basics. Chairlift Then move beyond the boundaries of the resort. Splitboard Turn up the octane a bit. Snowmobile Cross our fingers and pray for the best. Helicopter And culminate the trip with an exploration of the Kenai Fjords. Boat.

That was the plan, at least. You can think of it as the “trains, planes, and automobiles” approach to snowboarding in Alaska. When dealing with such a wild and undeveloped landscape, you’ve got to get creative if you want to access the best terrain… or the most remote.

RESORT BLASTING TO WARM UP THE LEGS

So we picked a date in late March of 2022, boarded planes from our respective homesteads and headed northwest. Once the full crew had arrived in Anchorage, we dropped our bags at the rental, grabbed our gear and headed to Alyeska resort to warm up the legs. We didn’t start riding until the late afternoon so the runs were bumpy and undulating, but that didn’t stop us from lapping late into the night. We cruised side hits, hillbombs, and even a few mini park jumps. Our first goal of the trip was an easy one to check off: Alaska by chairlift.

After the initial warmup session, we set our sights on Turnagain Pass.

We didn’t have any idea where to start or what to ride, so we leaned on the knowledge of our friend Chris, who became our de facto tour guide for the rest of the trip. Chris had recently been training to become a backcountry guide in the area, and he spent the following days showing us around Turnigan. He shared stories of filming with the local Alaskan Think Thank crew, and shed some light on all of the radical shred history hailing from AK. Conditions were marginal but good enough to find a few little jumps, get upside down and ride some bigger lines to warm up for what we hoped would be larger terrain, later in the trip.

FAST UP, FAST DOWN

After Turnigan, we turned our sights to Hatcher Pass, which had been getting more and colder snowfall.

Unlike our first zone, this area was best accessed by snowmobile, so we broke out the steel ponies.

THE ARBOR COLLECTIVE COMING THROUGH

Before we got started, Chris dug a snow pit and did a quick snowpack assessment. It was a good exercise since no one in our crew was from the area and we all needed to familiarize ourselves with the risks and conditions of the snowpack.

Frank April had never seen an avalanche shovel before either, so it was good that we were able to explain to him that falling snow in the mountains is called an avalanche, that they are more dangerous than double kink rails and that cops wouldn’t be kicking us out of the spot. (Just playin Frank ;) We finished our assessment, came to the conclusion that the snowpack was stable, and started lapping a progressively steepening ridgeline.

Erik Leon was eager to display his maturing skills as a freerider and quickly put down the first and most impressive line of the trip.

We met a cute dog who was wearing goggles, drank a couple of beers, and called it a day. We headed back to Girdwood where we had plans to meet up with our buddy Rich.

At this point in our trip, we’d experienced Alaska via chairlifts, splitboards and snowmobiles, so it was time to try our luck and access the “real shit” via heli. We got an insane deal on pricing and agreed to go on stand-by to see if the weather would break and give us a window to access some bigger terrain.

Marie must have built up enough karma for the entire group because everything seemed to fall into alignment - weather, availability and access. We were able to get up into higher elevation and access some of the best terrain in the Western Chugach thanks to our buddy Rich at Chugach Powder Guides.

From my perspective, this was such a different way to be in Alaska. I always went as a rookie myself on previous trips and only dipped my toes in that type of AK terrain a few times before. So I feel far from a master. But since it was Erik’s and Frank’s first time not only in AK but also their first time ever in a heli and heliboarding, first time ever on slopes that big, it felt really special to be able to live that experience with them. Everyone crushed it.

As soon as we got dropped on top of our second run, we were on top of convex rolls so you couldn’t see the run or the exposure below you.

It was Frank’s first experience of riding blind. After nervously asking a million questions, he started dropping slowly and 30 feet later he would yell “Oh I see it now! It’s mellow!” while disappearing into the abyss. Erik handled the terrain like a champ, with confidence and style as always. Our friend Chris got after it, picking advanced lines and getting airborne anywhere he could.

The line I picked turned out to be one of the best lines I’ve ever ridden in AK; a beautiful long spine that led to an exposed cliff band. There were some concerns since if the slope popped, I’d be dragged over a huge cliff and into some open crevasses below. But after a few mellow warm ups, I felt good about dropping in.

The snow was perfect, every turn created those magical poof clouds of sparkles. The spine, pretty blind and wishing it would never end, was such a treat. As I got closer to the cliff band, on my last turn, I noticed some cracks in the snow and realized I had set off an avalanche. I pinned it to my right, got swept under for a moment and thought I was going down.

Luckily, I was able to push my weight back up and ride away, adrenaline rushing, feeling very grateful for avoiding getting caught. Alaska is the real deal and it grabs my heart every time I come up here.

ALASKAN PARTY WAVE

Our final chapter of the trip began the very next day when we boarded the Milo Surf Boat, an old fishing vessel retrofitted for arctic surfing and splitboarding expeditions. We pulled out of the harbor in Seward and sailed 2 hours to the closest break.

When you sign up for a surf trip in Alaska, you know you’ll be surfing in cold water, but it doesn’t really hit you until you jump in. The water is straight up glacial…which I guess would make sense because it’s fed by glacier runoff…duh. A short paddle towards shore eventually

revealed a perfect head high point break with immaculate peeling waves running all the way to the beach! We honestly hadn’t expected any of the waves to be this good.

The wind was offshore and the light was catching the spray, making the most magical rainbow with radical, jagged, snow capped peaks in the background. It was easy to say that none of us had ever seen anything like this before. Pure beauty.

The crew was catching bombs. We had the whole break to ourselves,

and everyone was freaking out. We surfed until the exposure to cold herded us back onto the Milo.

Over the next few days, we explored and surfed different beaches, bays, and fjords; some filled with icebergs and littered with barking seals. We fished, cold plunged glacial bays, ate like Kings (and Queens, shout out to Marie cause she’s a Queen), played cards for hours, and listened to an endless stream of sea stories from Captain Mike.

ERIK DRAWING LINES BACK TO THE BOAT, AND DRAWING THE TRIP TO A CLOSE

At this point, we only had one final goal: to access the mountains by boat. On day 5 aboard the Milo, we were presented with that opportunity. We found a slope accessible by the skiff and had a short weather window to try our luck. After some minor deliberation, we suited up into our snow gear, grabbed our splitboards, hopped onto the skiff and putted to shore.

We were happily surprised to find that the snow had softened from the sun and would provide for some nice creamy turns on the way down.

Splitting to the top of the ascent, we looked around and realized that we were the only humans for thousands of miles. We stood atop a massive ridgeline with the ocean surrounding us on all sides and a playful, soft slope beneath our feet.

Looking down we could see the Milo waiting patiently for us in the bay at the bottom of the run. We dropped in and shared an epic lap together. We high fived, screamed, laughed and took a couple selfies for good measure. It was one of those moments that makes you

stop in your tracks and reflect on how lucky you are to experience the beauty of empty spaces untainted by civilization.

As we sailed back to harbor, I couldn’t help but look around and notice the glowing smiles on everyone’s faces and a feeling of deep connection between this “oddball” crew. As it turns out, intentionally getting lost in the vastness of a wild place is a great way to rediscover the love for old friends.

MAGGIE LEON: I have wanted to try this photo technique for a while now, and I knew Maggie would be the perfect person to try it with. Within thirty minutes of the sun setting and a dozen tries later perfecting this technique and the trick, we got it done! It’s so important to find riders that you have mutual trust with on either end to push yourself and to try new things.

JESS KIMURA: Last thirty minutes of the day up at Mt. Hood during It’s Tits! on the last day of the event with the worst light possible. This seems to be the perfect scenario for Jess Kimura and me. I got my fisheye as close as humanly possible as I heard Jess yell, “Drop!”. I couldn’t see her dropping in, and she could barely see the lip of this quarter, on which I placed two sticks on the edge for her to see at the last minute. Needless to say, we were both pleasantly surprised and hyped to get this shot.

SEAN DILLION: By far one of the smoothest dudes on a board. Sean will always be one of my favorite people to hang and shoot with. I have been shooting this skatepark for so long but never shot this feature fisheye. It’s fun to go back to places you have shot so many times before and push yourself to shoot something better.

STALE SANDBECH: I had the pleasure to shoot with the Rome Snowboards team for their event with Snowboy Productions called “Side Hit Seance” which took place right here in Vermont.

When I see a dozen or so photogs in one area during events, I have always tried to think super outside the box with the way I shoot photos in that space. As I was trying to figure out an angle, I looked up and saw how the trees almost looked like they were reaching out to grab Stale as he tried this trick. I quickly got my camera out, and I snapped this one as he laced it.

PINK DOLLAR POSSY: Where do I start with this crew?! I have known J since he lived back here in Vermont, and it’s amazing to see him and this crew continue to make space in this industry. I have had the pleasure of seeing J and Elias at a few Snowboy events this year, and they rip. Also, the outfit changes alone on hill are to die for, let me tell you.

NATE HAUST: On the last day of Side Hit Seance with the Rome squad, we all thought it would be a good idea to line up all of Rome’s next season’s boards and get some b-roll clips of someone lacing a tail press across them, and Nate was more than down. I was stoked since I have known Nate for a long time, and I could get in nice and close without worry. I can for sure still hear that firecracker!

JESS KIMURA: I believe this was shot back in 2018. We were getting to the end of the trip in Quebec, and Jess and Ben Bilocq had found this rock behind a random building out there and asked my opinion of it, and I loved it. Perfectly soggy spring day here on the East with just enough snow to make it work, and we got it done. I am so attracted to spots like this: they make you think a bit more about framing the shot and really working with the rider.

JESS KIMURA: The weather windows were real in Sunshine Village during Holy Bowly. I personally have never been in a situation where we might be outside all day and only have 45 minutes of good light – especially with all-snow features where it’s crucial. This day, in particular, everyone thought the morning’s weather was going to be trash and got wasted the night before. Keeping a close eye on the weather, we saw that it was going to be really good in the morning, so Jess Kimura, Amanda Hankison, Maggie Leon and myself got to the mountain early and pretty much had the course to ourselves with a few other people. Once the sun softened up the side of this hip, Jess roosted this spray. Definitely one of my favourite shots of the trip.

BEN POECHMAN: Everything Ben does is with the best style. This was shot right after Krush opened up the course on the first day at Holy Bowly, and Ben was cranking these handplants while other riders were trying to pick their lines. I love that he’s the only one on the course.

Growing up as a POC that got hooked on snowboarding in the late 90s / early 2000s, it wasn’t easy finding role models that looked like you. Especially not in Europe.

Meanwhile, in the US, a black kid named Russell Winfield was making noises in the scene and slowly but surely became one of the most stylish snowboarders in the game.

Today, Russell has a guaranteed spot among other legends in our sport and uses his experiences and status to make sure that EVERYBODY can join the snowboard community. And just like that, he organised the Ayee Esse happening at Bear Mountain in early April of 2022.

I flew over to Bear from Salt Lake City with Mike Bogs. I was on a K2 trip during that time and was sure that I wasn’t going to miss this event. The gathering started with a nice dinner on Friday night. Mike, Ride TM Drew and I arrived pretty late, and when we walked into the room, it hit me for the first time: Holy shit, there are more BIPOC snowboarders in this room than I have ever seen together before! Zeb Powell was there, Rob Roethler, Kody Williams, Jacob Krugmire, LJ Henriquez, Michael McDaniel, Ahmon Stamps, Keir Dillon, Damon Malik Morris and the list keeps going. The vibe was electric, and the mix of other pros like Mike Bogs and Harrison Gordon being there too, made this moment one of my personal highlights. You could tell that everybody felt really welcome, happy and hyped about the upcoming days.

The first day was unreal. The park was filled with big names of snowboarding and the lifestyle culture, and everybody was having a blast. The whole thing felt more like a festival than a snowboard event. It was all about having as much fun with your friends as you could. At some point during lunch, Russell came up and introduced me to Ibn Jasper (Designer) and Woodie White (Creative Director). Two very influential black men. A little later, he comes up again and says: “Yo, this is O.T. Genasis (!). He has a concert later but wants to learn how to snowboard before. Show him how we do it.” So, Mike Bogs and I taught him how to snowboard. It was too sick to be true.

And that goes for the whole event.

Russell managed to create a space where everybody was welcome.

The second and final day started slow. Most of the squad was pretty hungover. But when Russell opened the Holy Bowly style mini pipe setup, built especially for this event, the party started again. Zeb went straight bonkers and destroyed it.

Again, the vibe was pure joy, and you could tell that we all felt very grateful to be riding together.

After a quick early evening nap, we headed into town for the official event party. Again, the vibe was so fire, and as I looked to the DJ table, there was none other than Atiba Jefferson, the skateboard photographer legend, mixing tracks on his iPhone and people were going crazy.

To summarize, for the first time I was snowboarding with more riders that looked like me and had experienced similar stuff as me. It’s not that I don’t enjoy snowboarding with my white friends, but to see so many BIPOC on a mountain having the time of their lives made me incredibly happy and proud. Proud to be part of the snowboarding community that addresses the issue of racial equality and wants to see the world turn into a better place. Snowboarding connects people, and for that, I will be forever grateful.

Who was the crew for Kentaur?

The core crew was me and my friend Vlad Sknarin (he is not a professional filmer, he is a musician and just likes filming and art). I also usually asked my mates Dima Dudaryonok and (another) Vlad Struha, who is a photographer, to join us and help preparing spots.

You were filming VX, right?

Yeah, VX2100, because we didn’t have any other option! We needed that zoom, and my computer is also not so fast with heavy megabyte footage, so it was easy to edit the video. I also edited KENTAUR on my own, like most of the previous videos on the internet that I appear in. I

really have a dream to one day film a normal clip with a modern camera and a normal file like a pro *laughs*.

How long were you filming for, and where?

It took us one month to film everything, every day. One week in particular was so hard. Seven days, no tricks. It was so painful. We filmed everything in Minsk, Belarus, where I’m from.

Very few people were stoked. Most people are angry and don’t want me to destroy their stairs. This is a typical argument they use while we talk.

What were the biggest challenges that you faced for the project?

Challenge?

Motivation maybe, ‘cause of course I love it, but after a week I injured my shoulder. I was super scared ‘cause I hadn’t done something like that before. I think something dislocated inside, then I put it back. I don’t think it was my shoulder because I could lift my hand, but I was in so much pain that I had to take a break for two days.

Then I started doing some exercises to try and somehow fix it, but it made me think, what the fuck am I doing?

It’s scary. So after two days, I took two painkillers before going to the wave spot and started riding again.

We heard that you also got your family involved and that they joined you at some spots? What was that like? Do they understand street snowboarding?

I’m a super happy and lucky person.

I love my family, and my father helped me a lot with snowboarding, sometimes even with filming. Mom is my photographer, and I ask her to shoot me for different art projects.

Photography isn’t her hobby or anything, she’s just down to help, same as my father. You can see them in the intro of KENTAUR. A couple of my friends said the intro was weird and too long, but for me, it was more about showing who are the most influential people in my life. The intro is like “THANK YOU MOM and DAD”.

My dad and I also built a drop-in five years ago but it’s kinda heavy, so we could only use it when he was there to help with his Fiat Punto.

You’re a very creative person and do really cool things with ‘Trust’ zine, among other things. Why did you paint your face for this project?

What does it mean?

For me, the Clown means the separation between normal life and art and extreme activities. Like Spiderman, and also paying respect to Heath Ledger.

What do you do when you’re not snowboarding?

When I’m not snowboarding, I think about it every day! My friend Nikita Sekh visited me a couple of days ago, and I said that it’s a really serious problem for me. I just don’t know what to do except snowboarding.

I can’t live a calm life. And I don’t have an official job or anything. I earn money doing different random stuff, selling anything on the market, paintings, collages, handmade clothes and accessories etc.

What’s coming up for you in the future? Do you have plans to film more?

I’d like to continue filming, but as Jed said in the Bomb Hole – it’s kind of not smart to film street just for fun. I’m 26 right now, and I’m really scared of what I’m going to do in the future and how I’m gonna survive, so I’m studying graphic design right now. Vans paid me for the KENTAUR project, which was a surprise for me.

I just filmed KENTAUR for fun and then showed the result to Kostya Belozerov from Vans and they decided to make a little bonus for me. THANK YOU! That was my first ever cash for snowboarding, and I spent all the money on the graphic design course.

What does the word Kentaur mean, and why did you choose it as the title for the video?

Kentaur – comes from the word KENTZ. I used the word Kentz two years ago as a brand name. Of course, I don’t have a brand, but I like when you name something. KENTZ means friends, and KENTAUR means friend (‘cause I have a solo project, with the support of friends, but without them in the video, ‘cause my friend Dima Dudaryonok got injured at the beginning of the season. p.s The board I ride in KENTAUR is the only one in the world. I made a graphic and asked “Holly Wood Boards” (from Kyiv, Ukraine) to create a snowboard with my own design, so it was scary while filming because I didn’t want to break it. But the board is still alive, and the quality is insane, I’m super happy for my dream to come true with it.

ou know those adventure park places you went to as a kid?

The ones with big slides, ball pits, and other fun stuff to run around and play on? The Alaïa facilities are like that, but for adults. And instead of ball pits, there were halfpipes, jumps, rails, skateparks and a wave garden surf facility. Not bad. A ball pit or two actually would have been fun, but I guess you can’t have everything.

I’d come straight off a street trip, so it was extra nice to be in a space where everything was totally laid on for us,

We also got to eat in a fancy Italian restaurant under our hotel, twice!

I’m a simple guy, and having food provided in any scenario makes me very happy. Even better when it’s good food. Everyone in the place was wearing cashmere turtlenecks and had big shiny watches. Fridge was wearing a Cradle of Filth shirt with ‘Desire me like Satan’ written on the back and a picture of a topless crucified woman on her period on the front, so of course, we fitted in perfectly. I had a mad pizza that had

been slightly deep-fried and covered with lime zest, sun-dried tomatoes and rucola. It was like a classy Italian version of fried bread, but much better. If you don’t know what fried bread is, go to the UK and order a full English breakfast. Anyway, I’m digressing.

Before we continue I should probably introduce the crew for this trip. We had Fridge, Markus Olimstad, Moritz Amsüss and Christian Bjønness running the camera. Norwegian heavy, but that’s never a bad thing.

What was I talking about? Oh yeah, playgrounds. The fancy food was great, but all we really needed was the space to play, and this was more than provided. Fridge tweaked his knee in the pipe about half an hour after we started riding, but this didn’t stop him from landing a backflip on a scooter later that night. What a hero. Another scooter rider in the park looked a bit put out by his rapid progression, so he immediately flexed and did some sort of scoot double cork. He only did it into the airbag though, whereas Fridge put his down on the resiramp, so Fridge won that fight.

Moritz and Marcus didn’t get injured, but they did destroy pretty much everything in their path on the mountain and off it. One evening, they both bombed the entire seven kilometers to the Alaïa Chalet skatepark from our hotel at Alaïa Lodge. Moritz needed new wheels when he got there as he’d left most of his on the hill behind him, and his setup sounded more like a motorbike than a skateboard in the indoor park.

We were also lucky enough to jump in on a surf session at Alaïa Bay, which was more successful for everyone else than it was for me. Our filmer and lovely human Christian caught himself a few waves, as did Fridge and Markus. Moritz was the surf MVP for sure and actually looked like he knew what he was doing. I got dumped on my face four

times in a row, reaffirming my burning hatred of the water. Luckily I had a camera to retreat to and could document the others having fun.

Markus also did a boneless on the highlyskateable roof of the tennis court next door before we hurriedly departed and ran back to the mountain.

The surf session was followed up by a sunset session up on the mountain (yeah, surfing and snowboarding in one day, not bad) with Fridge running the handycam while Moritz and Marcus shut the jump down, with the Matterhorn lurking in the background.

This trip was simple, and it was just what we needed.

Snowboarding isn’t always about going on some insane

adventure into the unknown. Sometimes you just need a playground to kick back and enjoy, and that’s exactly what we did. Big up to everyone at Alaïa for hooking this one up and making us feel welcome and for not kicking us out of the restaurant because we looked scruff y. We’ll be back for sure. *When I wrote the title for this story, I imagined it

being said in a Spanish accent. I don’t knowwhy. Crans Montana is located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, not Spain. I guess I just thought it sounded funny and could picture Bumblebee Man from the Simpsons saying it.

BOOTS, OUTERWEAR, GOGGLES & HELMETS BUYER’S GUIDE 2022/23 Due to space constraints in the mag, we have to split our product guides up into two parts. The previous issue featured what we internally labelled ‘hard goods’ [boards and bindings] and this one features ‘soft goods’ [boots, goggles, outerwear & helmets]. It’s not a perfect way to divide it to be honest.

Would you consider snowboard boots soft? They’re for sure softer than a pair of bindings, but you definitely wouldn’t want to have some thrown at your head. Same with goggles. We all remember Torstein’s headshot at X Games, that looked brutal.

Having some pants or a jacket thrown at you wouldn’t be too bad though, but a wayward zipper could still catch you in the eye and do some damage. There are helmets in this guide too, which are literally the opposite of soft. The point we’re slowly trying to make is that most of these goods might be soft, but, unlike our writing, they should still be treated with the utmost respect.
