Physical health: You need to keep your abs in good condition while filming a movie. Otherwise, you will fuck up your lower back while spending shit tons of time making love with your camera. There’s always time to squeeze in a one-minute planking session while the rider is walking up the hill. Always attend the shoveling sessions, too, because of way too many reasons. Pushups in-between tries is also a good way to stay in shape, but you’ll need to wait until the summer to see the benefits.

Travel tips: Snowboard filmmaking pretty much always includes a lot of traveling. Lately I’ve noticed that partying the day before a long flight is not good for you. It took me a long time to understand that, but now that I am enlightened, traveling has become a pleasure for me. Also, get a travel pillow. The pricier the better. There are not too many things in the modern world which are more G than a functional and nice-looking travel pillow. You won’t regret it.

Keeping it warm: Good and warm outerwear is the key. Use layers - lots of layers. Don’t forget to get a nice pair of filming gloves, too! Thin and warm. Even though you might film street, don’t do it in your sneakers. Get a nice pair of Sorels or something. When you have considered all the previous factors, remember not to look wack. Snowboarders don’t look wack.

Food: Go for the smoothies in the morning. And use weird sounding ingredients. The more exotic the name is, the better it is. Guaranteed. Fuck all the basic shit. Consuming meat at every meal is also key because you will probably end up filming time and time again with snowboarders from the US and they need to have meat at every meal. No exception. It probably has something to do with the evolution and the stomach fluids… Long story short, get used to eating the meat and fuck the veggie trend. The more red, the better.

Mental health: It’s all about what’s happening in-between your ears. Mindfulness is the word. You need to exercise mindfulness because we, the people of 2017, are not able to be in the moment if being in the moment doesn’t have a name. So hire yourself a mindfulness coach.

his day was a little difficult in terms of disgruntled residents and law enforcement. After an early morning boot, I went to Gabrovo City Hall with one of our excellent hosts, Stan, to see if we could make a filming arrangement with the cops and city officials, while the rest of the crew went to this down-flat-to-ledge spot. (See Brady’s part). Having set the spot up, the guys took a short break for a sit-down lunch at the behest of one member of our party, indeed

SLICE OF METHOD 18.1.indd 46

an odd choice and a point of contention within the group once they returned to find the spot being dismantled and officers telling them to fuck off. Nevertheless, we returned a few days later for another swing, and as was often the case in Bulgaria, once we showed a bit of footage to the offended parties, attitudes U-turned, and a few individuals even felt obliged to assist. Case in point - this helpful gent returned with clippers to lead the spot landscaping effort. - MG PHOTO: DANIEL TENGS

was only able to film on a two week trip to Sweden. This was the last spot of the trip and I had already landed the trick twice. I just got too comfortable, and my pride, in thinking I could do the trick better, got the best of me. The worst part is not many people will realize how gnarly sliding wood is, and the lack of snowboarders who are willing to do it. So I got the most injured I’ve ever been, over the worst shot I filmed on the trip! My diagnosis at the hospital was: both lungs bruised, two broken ribs, sprained ACL, torn AC joint in my shoulder (which

SLICE OF METHOD 18.1.indd 50

would end up requiring surgery upon my return to the U.S.) and a compressed spine, which required them having to shove fingers up my rectum to confirm my muscles were properly contracting, to which my only response was, “Oh, yeah! Finger me like a fuckin’ bitch!” - Dylan Alito PHOTO: DANIEL BERNSTAL

What kind of introductory message do you send on Tinder? Tinder is for young kids and old women, ha! I don’t use it, I have a girlfriend… How many times have you fallen in love while traveling? That’s a hard one. There are so many different and nice ladies on the road, but sometimes they are probably just nice because you always see them after two weeks of just seeing guys. Most adventurous thing experienced while filming for Method Movie II? Guns ’n Roses in Tokyo. We were trippin’ - probably the best concert ever! Tell us a snowmobiling story… Oh my god… I thought snowmobiling was dope - you don’t have to hike and everything is so easy - but it’s definitely not

181 SEVI.indd 52

easy. The first couple of days I was always thinking about just hiking up. It probably sounds weird, but it’s so hard to just go somewhere alone, and then if you have to double somebody up, it is even worse. But yeah, we got into it, and at the end it was fun, for sure. So the story: It was our first day on the sleds. We rented them from this dude and he asked us at the beginning if we’d ever ridden sleds before because the river had started to open up and there was a chance that we’d have to cross it. Before anybody could say something, Vlad’s (our filmer) answer was, “Come on dude. Look at me. I’ve been here 15 years in a row. I know how to sled.” You can guess who got stuck in the river five minutes later, ha! Where did you drink your first beer? My first beer ever? That was probably on the lake in Uster about 10 years ago.

One habit ya need to drop? Less meat, more veggies.

and got me so hyped on snowboarding was Nicolas’ part in Absinthe’s Resonance. That just blew me away!

Did you learn any life-hacking skills while on the road this year? How to cook fresh-fished mussels from Kazu and Gigi. Thanks boys!

One trick that will never go out of style? Method.

Best part about Laax as a home base? Coming home and having the best dudes and the sickest resort around you. Loosest thing you can speak about happening in the Rider’s Palace? Oh shit! Too many I should not tell… Favorite video part of all time and why? There are a lot of sick parts, but one that really influenced me

181 SEVI.indd 53

One trick that got away this year? Tail tap to front one on a pillow. Didn’t make it into the part, so, damn. One place you have to return to? Hokkaido. Final shoutout? Thank you Method Mag for making this happen and thank you everyone who is supporting me! (Homies, family, sponsors). It’s just way too sick right now, so let’s go cruise!

01.10.2017 23:34

What kind of introductory message do you send on Tinder? I don’t use Tinder because I ain’t scared of talking to a beautiful woman’s face. But if I did it would be, “You look like trash, can I take you out?” How many times have you fallen in love while traveling? Too many times to count. The most memorable was my first trip to Sweden. A week earlier I had gotten a dog and named it Milla. I went to Sweden for the Frontline Rail Jam. At the after party I looked over and saw one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen smiling at me. Ends up that her name was Camilla and she went by Milla. I took her home only to find out she had a boyfriend and all my sexual endeavors I was in pursuit of were immediately halted. She tried to convince her friend to hook up with me instead. Although no “love” was made that night, we still had an amazing time, wrecking the room in the process and almost getting kicked out of the hotel in the morning. Upon my return home, all of my friends started a rumor that I named my new dog after my new Swedish love. Not true, although they are both very beautiful girls. What’s the first thing that goes through your head, right when you’ve just gotten broken off? As I coughed up blood I thought, “Am I going to die?” Then once en route to the hospital I thought, “I hope there is a Swedish girl in the hospital and a

181 DYLAN.indd 54

preacher who can marry us in the waiting room so that the health care is free.” However, I do have health insurance because I’m a responsible snowboarder, so the health care was covered and it wasn’t necessary for me to beg for fans’ and friends’ money via GoFundMe. How much time did you get to spend filming for the movie before the injury on the wooden kink? What exactly happened? I was only able to film on a two week trip to Sweden. It was the last spot of the trip and I had already landed the trick twice. I just got too comfortable and my pride, in thinking I could do the trick better, got the best of me. The worst part is not many people will realize how gnarly sliding wood is, and the lack of snowboarders who are willing to do it. So I got the most injured I’ve ever been, over the worst shot I filmed on the trip! My diagnosis at the hospital was: both lungs bruised, two broken ribs, sprained ACL, torn AC joint in my shoulder (which would end up requiring surgery upon my return to the U.S.) and a compressed spine, which required them having to shove fingers up my rectum to confirm my muscles were properly contracting, to which my only response was, “Oh, yeah! Finger me like a fuckin’ bitch!” The ultimate non-snowboard brand sponsor would be? America, because then I’d have Secret Service kick out the cops who try to kick me out!

What does America need these days, in your humble opinion? For people to stop complaining when they don’t get their way. Also, many people’s sense of humor has been drowned by the nagging people who believe everything needs to be PC. Also, a diet - obesity is a problem that gets encouraged. There should be a certain fitness screening to order Taco Bell. Five push-ups for a taco, 10 pull-ups for a burrito, 15 sit-ups for a Cheesy Gordita Crunch. Best place to score American flag gear? Wal-Mart. Mustard or ketchup on your bratwurst? Mustard! I’ll save the Heinz for all the sissys out there who need to ketchup! You’re cooking dinner for the boys, what are you making? I cook dinner every night, for the boys and girls! I can basically cook anything. Except eggs - I don’t fuck with eggs. Does leather turn you on? Only when Buffalo Bill wears it. How do you feel about saunas? Hot and bothered! I love saunas, and I’m not the typical American scared to let a little meat hang with the boys! Strangest thing you’ve ever seen go down while at a spot filming? One time this Canadian girl walked a

grill and a sled full of food almost a mile out to a spot under a bridge. She made a whole gourmet meal for us while we shoveled. Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, steak, salmon, potatoes… It was the best meal of the trip, possibly one of the best meals of my life, as well as the most memorable. Best way to get a cop to leave the spot? Tell him Blue Lives Matter. Once a cop was leaving and said to me on his way out, “Don’t fall and break your neck now,” to which I responded, “Thanks! Don’t get shot in the face today!” He actually laughed, though. Worst way to get a cop to leave the spot? Try to steal his gun and put it to his face, I guess. One video part to rule them all? All of my video parts are my favorite video parts, because at the end of the day, it’s a catalog of my life. If there are tricks I didn’t get, that’s life. If there are tricks that the editor doesn’t want

in, too bad. I did that trick for a reason because it was in my imagination and I brought it to life. So there is always a special connection with it to me. It’s part of the story. The shenanigans or skits I always incorporate are part of my personality. So by watching my parts, you’re getting to know me and my personality and passion for snowboarding and life. To rule them all you’d simply have to watch them in order and watch me grow as a snowboarder and person. What was that crazy, red, temple-looking spot you hit? It was like a Chinese hotel/truck stop/ restaurant/museum that was finished but never opened. I suspect he’s just trafficking Asian sex slaves out of the “unfinished” business. Tell us a good airplane story... One night for Halloween my costume was, “I didn’t touch my doder.” So basically I dressed in overalls with no shirt underneath and a farmer hat. I then put fake blood on my hands, mouth and pubic region. Also, I carried around

a baby doll all night with blood on her butt and pubic regions. That night I got extremely wasted and kept claiming, “I fly out tomorrow and I’m going dressed like this!” No one believed me. However, sure as shit, I landed in southern California and the Volcom crew arrived to pick me up, only to see a raped doll and a farmer claiming to be an innocent man! I received many strange looks on the flight and through the airport, however nobody was brave enough to inquire about the costume. Final shout-out? My dog. Everyone who helped so much when I was hurt. Halldor, thanks for helping out so much while I was stuck in Sweden. Pepper, thanks for sleeping on the couch next to me and taking care of me for a month while I drifted in and out of consciousness while consuming pain pills. My girlfriend for getting me off the pain pills. My mother for everything. And all of my sponsors who make all this pain and pleasure possible: Volcom, 32, Never Summer, Bear Mountain, and Denver Sports Recovery.

Where did you travel while filming for your part in Method Movie 2? After going halfway around the globe last year, my part this year is almost entirely shot in and around Innsbruck, but I did go to Italy twice and did one insane trip to Andorra. Who’d you spend the most time on the road with while filming? My little twin, Max Zebe. I love myself, so it´s nice to have a little copy hanging around, you know?! Haha, nah. Max is a G, very unique on his own and a super-hyped kid. I´m down! I also filmed a lot with Simon Pircher. He´s the man. Keep your eyes peeled for his part in Different Direction´s “Odyssey”. You’re cooking dinner for the gang, what are you making? Since the Carbonaraking (Jhonny, aka Marco Morandi) himself introduced me to the art of making spaghetti carbonara this year, I´d go with that. I was also told that my curry isn´t too bad either… Worst job you’ve held? Hm, maybe being the only rider able to ride at some spots this year was the worst. I love riding with my homies and it sucks

181 FLO.indd 58

if you´ve got to hit a spot all on your own, especially when it´s something scary. What is the most unusual way you got speed for a spot this year? At the flat-down-flat rail in my hometown, the in-run was flat and super short but you kind of needed a lot of speed, so we tied the bungee pretty tight and I had to hold it pretty much until I jumped onto the rail. It made me feel like a wakeboarder in the beginning. By the way, thanks for pulling bungee for me all-year long, Ethan! I’ll make it up to you this year ma G! One video part to rule them all? Jed Anderson in VG’s Visitors. One spot you hit that was way heavier than it looks? Probably the roof to down bar. It´s just nasty when you can´t see where you´re going from the takeoff, and smashing a 50 onto it, I had to be pretty precise. I had some creamy tacos before getting it. Favorite spot of the year? I think the side-hit backside 720 in Andorra. I did that one

when I was pretty wasted at the end of the day. Everybody had been drinking all day while just cruising the resort and hitting it straight, and then OLF (my drunken alter ego) started thinking it would be dope to send a full-speed spin off it. Well, it worked out pretty well. Maybe I should drink and ride more often? One trick that will never go out of style? Fs 360. A little corked-out, grab or no grab – best feeling in the world.

Do you have the best hair in the vid? Come on. That´s a well-known fact by now. If there were a secret password for the infamous Tante Emma club in Innsbruck, what would it be? Well, “lossts mi eini es Kanacken” seems to work for the drunken DON (Michi Schatz). I wouldn´t recommend it to any other visitors, though.

Tell us an Emma story… The good thing about Emma is that I don´t remember any Most uncomfortable thing you’ve ever experienced at a spot? stories from it. I don’t think anybody does. I didn´t even know Riding alone. It sucks. Max, stop getting hurt! where it was until I walked by sober two years ago, ha! Tickets received for snowboarding? Tickets paid for snowboarding? Nah… We´re actually all very polite and well-educated young men. Most of the time we’re able to negotiate with the pigs without getting into any trouble. Bungees are… …still way more reliable than winches.

181 FLO.indd 59

What was the wildest session of the year? BEERCATION! If you know, you know. Final shout-out? Jhonny, Sebi, Theo, Luz and Balint for filming me, Pwee for killing it on the editing, the homies for the insane season and Salomon, Volcom and Absolute Park for the support!

01.10.2017 23:36

Do you come up with a pre-season spot list or do you just wing it? I try to have a handful of spots in Salt Lake in mind before the snow falls so I can get things rolling if it snows there. Then, I’m pretty much winging it. You never really know where you are going to end up going to film. Before I started traveling I would have a good Utah spot list in mind. Once I started traveling and not knowing where I would be filming I started winging it more and became less prepared. How do you feel about what you filmed for this part? I feel pretty good about it considering the time frame I spent filming for the part. Filming with the Method Mag guys was a super last-minute decision; I think we (Brady Lem and I) flew to Europe like the first week of February. I called up Aaron Bittner from Skullcandy five days before everyone was planning on meeting there and he was down to help out with a ticket so that’s when it was official, like, I’m going over to Europe for a couple weeks to film this part. First impression upon arriving in Bulgaria? Scared, haha! We walk out of the airport and there are stray dogs and dog poop everywhere. Then we got picked up by our guide, Niko, who lives in Sofia, and he is speeding down the roads so fast (later we find out he hasn’t had a license in six years), yelling at all the other drivers and telling us about how he got trapped in his apartment elevator for like three hours before he was able to come pick us up. After that start, I wasn’t really sure what to expect.

Yeah, that back lip is pretty massive! Was that a long battle? It wasn’t that bad. I actually hit that rail a couple weeks before I did the back lip. There used to be a tree and a sign on the side of the rail so you couldn’t go sideways through it, so I filmed a different trick on it. Then, when some of the Electric guys came to town, they went to that spot and broke down the tree and sign. So I had to go back and film something better on it, ha! Shout-out to them. One spot from the part that’s gnarlier than it looks? Nothing’s coming to mind. Bungees are… The worst. But they do give consistent speed and are sometimes the only option. Most influential video part of all time? ---The ultimate non-snowboard brand sponsor would be? Airbnb. Is it OK to give yourself a nickname? That’s pretty much what Instagram does, right? Do you think everyone pisses in the shower? All dudes, for sure.

A lot of your part was filmed in Europe. Any stark differences in your mind between filmingthere versus in the States? One trick that got away? Out of sight out of mind! I try and block out all the lost battles. It feels like every spot in Europe is way cooler ‘cause I haven’t seen as many of the spots over there in videos, so I’m way more hyped. But Europeans probably think the same thing One trick you are super psyched on getting? I was pretty stoked on the back lip. I did one to fakie that was about spots in the States. a little loose and then I got the one to regular like two or three You’ve got $25 to spend in an airport, where’s it going? tries after that. It’s a traditional soup, so we tried it, and it was gnarly. Favorite lodging you had all season? One of the spots we had in Bulgaria was amazing! So much hospitality. Who’d you spend the most time on the road with while filming for the movie? Zebbe was my main partner in crime. Swedish meatballs were shared, Bulgarian meat was roasted and even some Russian Borsch got in the mix. Zebu has been my thunder buddy since I started filming snowboarding, so getting a season with the cool zebra striped cat was mucho appreciated. Did you have a location you enjoyed most? MOTHER RUSSIA! It was exactly what I thought it would be and absolutely not what I expected at the same time. Everything was super dialed: accommodation at the bottom of the chair, breakfast and dinner everyday, ping pong, loads of snow, big mountains and even some pow at the end as well! Best session while filming for the video? A session with Halldor and Perry in Stockholm - shit went down! It actually went down-flat-downflat-down. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever bought in a supermarket in the East? One apple, in a foam cushion, with plastic wrap around it. What a waste of resources! I still feel bad that I bought it. You’re cooking dinner for the gang, what are you making? Raclette, what else? Did you read any books on the road this winter? If so, which one(s)? No, man... Been too lazy with reading lately. How many rolls of film did you shoot this winter? What camera were you shooting with? That’s a good question. I guess about eight. I used a Minolta point-and-shoot on the mountain - a cheap one so it’s not a problem if it breaks. And it did break, like every camera I take to the mountain. Did you learn any life-hacking skills while on the road this year? Will-J (Jackways) showed me how to use a rice cooker. I need one of those things! One trick that will never go out of style? Bs 180. Where did you do most of your filming for this Method Movie 2 part? I started very late because I was competing most of the winter, and right when I was done I hurt my shoulder on the last contest and was out for a few weeks. My first trip was to Riksgränsen in April for about a week of really good conditions - I pretty much got 80 percent of my shots there. After that I went to Kläppen and had a really nice session on a jump we built there. At the same time, I hurt the shoulder again, meaning I had to go for surgery and my season was done. So I pretty much filmed my part in a week and a half. At least it’s something to be proud of. It’s got me really hyped to get back and film a legit part next time!

was planning everything with. The original plan was to go to Alaska but unfortunately the shoulder made the schedule too tight for that.

Stock one but gotta ask: Do you feel any more or less pressure filming a part than in competitions? If you are first to track a backcountry kicker, I would say it’s the same amount of pressure to me. Filming is less pressure most of the time, which is a good thing!

What’s the best way to kill time on a long-haul flight? Podcasts. I listen to a lot of Swedish ones but if I was with an international crew, I would go with ”How I Built This.” It’s inspiring to hear people who’ve created companies.

Anyone you’d say was invaluable in getting you out there and helping you figure shit out? I would definitely say Chriso at Method Mag. He was the one I

Have you bought your own snowmobile yet? I was planning to buy one but then we talked to Arctic Cat and they hooked us up with these intense touring sleds for the whole crew. I think I will get one next year! If you could rename one grab, what would it be and what would you change the name to? That would be the ”Taipan grab”. I’d change it to the ”Reach-around grab”.

Kevin and Tor - good or bad influences? Good influence on snow, bad influence off snow!

You like a good night at the club, tell us a good clubbing story… Damn, I could go heavy on this subject but I can’t tell! There are some good stories from the Olympics that the Swedish journalists would love to hear!

Do you answer them all? I try to answer a lot, but definitely staying away from answering the crazy ones. They are better off without attention.

You get to be DJ for the night, what’s the first track you throw on? Eminem - “Lose Yourself”.

One trick that got away? Triple frontside rodeo. Haven’t seen that trick since Kyle Mack did it during the O’Neil Evolution in 2013. It would be way more fun to see those kind of triples in contests.

What’s it like being famous? Ha, I don’t see myself as famous!

One trick you are super psyched on getting? Bs triple rodeo 1440 would be intense.

Do you get fan mail? Or these days, fan DMs? I do get a lot of crazy fan DMs - a lot of teenage girls in life crises!

Bungees are… I’ve only been using winches - way better!

What’s the creepiest one you’ve ever received? This one girl started to hit up a lot of friends of mine and my agent Kristoffer, so he had to deal with talking to her, ha! It’s good to have an agent who can help you out with that stuff.

181 SVEN.indd 73

What was the wildest session of the year? Kläppen was intense right before I popped the shoulder. Final shout-out? Shout-out to Chriso for letting me film this part, to Kuske for being a awesome person and to Halldor for being so inspiring to me.

couldn’t grasp why these old men were so angry. Granted, I couldn’t do much beyond make inferences because they were screaming in Bulgarian, but given the circumstances - a few of us hanging out, shoveling snow around, not yet riding - I was surprised they were this upset. Later on, after giving some thought to how prevalent snowboard crews had been here in small, commonly placid, towns like Smolyan over the last two years, I realized why there might have been a heightened level of concern in respect to potential property damage. But in this contentious moment, I was lost.

Niko Plakov, a no-bullshit Bulgarian snowboard legend, was our guide for this leg of the trip and the de facto negotiator in these sort of tense situations. It’s worth noting that Niko is not necessarily the “diffuse-at-all-costs” sort. How that helped or hurt our negotiations, these American ears will never know. After placating the ornery elders, in addition to the largely-indifferent police officers who’d arrived and served chiefly as officiators of the squabble, Niko instructed us to sit tight and not build or shovel for a bit while he worked on a solution. The affronted parties turned and left, but to the best of our understanding, were going to return with the super of the property. It marked the beginning of a reoccurring theme in Bulgaria, where private citizens seemed far more concerned about snowboarding in (semi) public spaces than the police. Before long, a third man arrived, presumably the superintendent, followed closely by the gang from earlier. He was considerably younger than the pair we met first, 40 or so, and built like a god-damn fridge. He appeared to care even less about the matter than the police, but also eager to satisfy all parties without delay and resume whatever it is he does when he doesn’t have to deal with arguments over yard furniture. When Niko returned, we learned that his postponed activity is likely lifting. Shocker. Apparently, he is a champion weightlifter, and had represented Bulgaria in the Olympics. We also learned that Niko was able to obtain the mayor’s signature on a document stating that we had permission to ride in any public space in the city. At least that’s what Niko told us it said. *Special thanks to everyone who helped us in any way during our stay in Bulgaria, notably, Niko Plakov, Dimo Petkov, Stan Semov, Ivo Kostov, Rosen Sinabov, Evgeni Dimitrov and Angela Angelova.

A

t the end of last winter, a few Method heads rolled into Laax to shoot for the new movie. I had never been myself but had, of course, heard seriously good things and seen my fair share of footage and photos from the instantly recognizable P60 run and the two pipes. I was more than keen to see what the deal was.

The crew comprised Method Movie 2 riders Roope Tonteri, Len Jørgensen and Max Zebe, with Petrus Koskinen and myself behind the cameras. Ethan Morgan and Flo Corzelius also appeared on their way back from Andorra but their riding day was a whiteout and we weren’t able to shoot anything with them. I think Ethan did some of his trademark, headache-inducing iPhone journalism about the bars of Laax, which you’ll have to ask him about one day since he lost his phone shortly afterward. Anyway. Snowboarding. The parks in Laax are pretty huge and varied but what stood out the most during the time we spent there (besides the breakfast and homemade marmalade at the Rider’s Palace) was the transition park. It’s no simple task to make something a bit different that’s genuinely fun to ride but Luca Kuppelwieser and the snow park dudes fucking nailed it, creating something that you could lap for hours and never get bored - a place where you could put down a different run each time. It was exactly what a snow park should be. You could carve, jump, plant and gap pretty much everything.

Besides having a great time riding the setup myself, it was a real treat to watch a group of talented dudes figure out their lines, each doing it in their own way and exhausting all the options available. Roope was tanking through it like a slopestyle course, Max was styling through the multiple transition options and Len was handplanting his way down the hill and also tearing up the channel gap at the end of the line. Trying to keep up with any of them as they navigated their way down was no easy feat, testament both to their riding as well as how much fun they were having. In a time when too many people and resorts are doing the same shit over and over, it was refreshing to see something like this. It’s something snowboarding needs more of! Another after-riding highlight was hanging at Caumasee just down the road and watching Roope’s shaved, sunglass-adorned head bob along through the impossibly blue water like a hippo. We spent a good few hours down there swimming, pillaging the forest for wood with Len the Viking, building a fire and enjoying the company of some sound locals under the stars. It was simple and it was classic. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but Laax just felt…different. It had a vibe that was very much it’s own and there was a kind of youthful energy about it, a sense that the crew and staff there was just down to be exploring new things. The place is well-designed, from our hotel all the way to the top of the mountain, with fine prints decorating the walls. I like these things; it made it feel homely. It also felt like they were definitely backing snowboarding, more so than almost anywhere else I’ve ever been. We got a bit of everything during our time at Laax. We rode a unique - and seriously fun park setup, ranging from banks to superpipes. We enjoyed good company and beautiful scenery. We partied in the club under our hotel, skated a foam pit and enjoyed an insanely good, locally-sourced breakfast every day in our hotel. Most importantly, we felt entirely welcome. We will definitely be back.

ZEBBE In Sochi, we stayed at this hotel called Riders Lodge and in the lobby they had table tennis. We played each other every day and I would say we were pretty good. We started to play other people who were staying at the hotel, and there were a few other players who were really good, but nothing too special. For a couple of days, I saw this old guy just watching everybody play. One day he comes back with his own table tennis racket. He had definitely played on a high level; he was so fucking good and didn’t give anybody a chance. Whether it was us or small kids - he just did not care. He just wanted to win and prove that he was the best. It was just funny how he scoped out everybody who played for a few days and then just shut it down. Another one of the funniest

181 RUSSIA.indd 92

moments on the Sochi trip was when we went to a karaoke bar near the hotel. We were the only ones singing in English, so I’m not sure that everybody in the bar understood us. We started off pretty mellow, standing there and singing, but as the night went on we started to put on more and more of a show. By the end, we were running around the bar singing and dancing, really getting everybody hyped. After that night we started the karaoke band and we got big at another karaoke bar in Moscow! LEN I feel a little bad for saying it, but the last two days of the trip were by far the best. The shitty thing wasthat Mitja had some visa problems and left a couple days early. And I’m

talking about heavy dump-age! So, in his place, we got the boys behind the lens: A-cam - Zebbe, B-cam - myself, and last but not least, C-cam - Sparrow. We CRUISED around, flipped on every little bump, slashed every pocket, dropped cliffs and got pitted. They were full-on snow days! One day we even cut it a little short because the homies had hooked us up with a bungee jump excursion - a death-defying cable, 207 meters above the ground. But the Karaoke Dream Team sent it! Even big bro Zebra turned into a flying eagle. MITJA What made the trip for me was definitely the crew. I know it may sound cliche, but we could be looking for pow in the freakin’ Sahara with this gang and still have a bangin’ time.

181 RUSSIA.indd 93

Although there were almost no pow days*, we stayed true to this season’s “clip a day” and “believe and achieve” mantras, had tons of fun with the “what-are-the-odds” game, karaoke and whatnot, and got hooked on Sparrow’s motivational “Megamix™” snacks. During my last days of the trip, we weren’t stacking that much due to shit snow, so I asked if they wanted to spend the whole day digging out a small bowl in the woods, just for a fun sesh with the boys,or if they wanted to scrape in the streets to try and get some hammers. The answer was, “Well, you basically answered it yourself!” So we dug the bowl, laughed about my hungover fire-making skills and got loads of cool shit done anyway. There were numerous moments like this, and that’s real snowboarding to me. No fucks given! Clip a day.

SPARROW We were the Karaoke Dream Team, a mix-and-match between a Swede, a Norwegian and an Englishman. It may sound like a joke, however, we take ourselves very seriously. We even had our first fans come to take pictures while bungee jumping, ha! (See Method. tv Russia episode at Methodmag.com.) Sochi itself is strange, man. Such a big town, with huge buildings and large, city-like roads but featuring a picturesque backdrop. It’s a bit of a mind boggle. I guess it’s kind of what happens to any city after the Olympics rolls through. Build it big, host a mega-show then piss off on to the next one, leaving behind unnecessary infrastructure. As for notes on the Sochi trip, I just looked at my journal and it makes no sense at all. It’s more a collection of scattered thoughts. But here we go... Everyone killed it! Getting lost in the woods and building skate jumps out of any materials possible felt like being a kid again. We built a snow bowl. Sochi is kind of like Cali. A bit... You fly in and there are palm trees and shizz. The locals showed me a good tip for grinding weed using a screw. I got beat at ping pong by Len and Zebbe like 13 or 14 times in a row. The next day I kicked their ass...after a couple beers. That’s the trick get em pissed. Then, bam! I took an Uber for like 25 minutes and I swear it was £2.55 or something. Had the fucking sickest time!

Eagle Pass Heli is a place you dream of going. Or should dream of going, provided you don’t smoke a ton of weed, and can still remember your dreams. We’ve got little idea about the habits of David Carrier-Porcheron and Roland Morley-Brown, but are thrilled to have gotten the boys up to this British Columbian gem, along with veteran photographer Chad Chomlack-Chomlack, for a week of powder madness. It may not have been absolutely perfect, but that’s the beauty of Eagle Pass, especially when stacked up against other heli-ops. Down days here are almost unheard of. Chad explains a bit more:

Have you been to Eagle Pass before? What’s your experience with the operation going into this trip? I have been going to Eagle Pass for the last five winters and one thing that I absolutely love about it is we fly - no bullshit. If we can get up into our zones, we will always be working, each and every time. The terrain is perfect for the riders we bring ‘cause it is gnarly and it is fun. The guides are consistently top-notch and always give a healthy green light when it is on! Have you worked with DCP or RMB before? If so, in what capacity? I have worked with DCP for the last five years or so. This was my first time working with RMB. It was super fun to see the natural chemistry between the two of them. RMB’s humility mixed with a charging attitude brought the stoke each day. DCP, well, that dude is hyped every day! It’s hard to keep up with the energy he puts into the world. One of the last legends standing, in my eyes. Despite less than ideal weather, what were some noteworthy moments from the trip? Again, we worked off the fact that the Eagle Pass crew is super down to make shit happen in tough conditions; the guides were always game to get after something. This particular trip, the snow was epic but the light sucked and traveling in the heli was a bit touch-and-go. It made for some serious heart pounds, a lot of “YES!”, plenty of sweaty dudes, and thankful returns at the end of the day! Describe the overall environment up at Eagle Pass. Every year I’ve shot at their operation, we’ve always been led by super-pro guide direction, mixed with a healthy risk for going for it and pushing into rad zones. Their zones are filled with such insane lines, and stocked with creative options. And their guys know where to look. There’s such sick, unique terrain, including stuff suitable for any weather, which is rare. What made this winter’s trip unique in respect to other visits to BC. What was unique about this trip was that we had a small, great crew and RMB commanded this super sick attitude of just being down with whatever. DCP’s experience with the terrain led us into some seriously awesome moments. Also, the dinner times were all-time! Good food, good shredding, good laughs and positive connections!
