inter in the Methow Valley is, more or less, about the same duration every year. But we keep adding more attractions to help you fill that special time in this enchanting place. In response, we have made Methow Valley Winter 2019-20 bigger than any of the previous annual magazines to accommodate more information, more photography and more services to our readers. New this year is a directory of local lodging options. We’ve also included an updated version of the dining directory that debuted last year.

For many, Nordic skiing is the big allure. With more than 200 kilometers of groomed trails, the Methow challenges you to explore the valley’s farthest reaches on skis.

But skiing is not the only way to take advantage of the snow and cold. The Methow has become a Mecca for fat biking enthusiasts. It was already a favorite

of snowmobilers. It’s becoming increasingly appealing to snowshoers. With the expanded facilities at the Winthrop Rink, ice skaters and hockey players are taking full advantage of a much longer season on the ice. And just a few miles away, Loup Loup Ski Bowl offers challenging alpine skiing in an extraordinary setting — plus snowboarding, tubing, Nordic skiing and the new favorite, luge sledding. And let’s not forget the somewhat more sedate (but rewarding) outdoor experiences such as ice fishing and stargazing.

You can come fully equipped for all those activities, or find what you need to buy or rent at our helpful local retailers.

Methow on ice Winthrop Rink offers an extraordinary outdoor experience for all ages

F

rom toddlers wobbling along for their first ice skating experience, to casual recreational skaters, to youth hockey competition, to college teams banging the boards at top speed, the world-class Winthrop Rink accommodates a wide range activities for all levels of skaters.

The rink features an NHL regulation-size hockey surface, permanent ice-making system, a 6,000-square building with changing rooms, rentals, concessions, and an upstairs warming and

viewing room. The open-air facility provides a great skating experience and Methow Valley views simultaneously.

For decades, folks in the Methow Valley went ice skating outside the old-fashioned way — by finding an area big enough to flood and freeze when the conditions were right.

The dream of a permanent outdoor facility was realized in 2007 when the Winthrop Rink was completed, thanks to a state grant matched by

local donations of money, time and materials. But it wasn’t until the winter of 2016-17 that the final phase of the rink plan was finally completed: a permanent ice-making system was installed. Now the outdoor rink is open from early November through March.

The rink’s busy schedule includes a full slate of skating sessions and lessons for casual skaters, or for students who are just learning or improving; a youth hockey program; drop-in sessions for hockey “rink rats;” and adult and youth hockey tournaments.

Don’t worry if you’re not equipped for a spin round the rink. Rentals are available for those who don’t have their own skates.

WINTHROP RINK: the basics FIND IT

The rink is located just off of Twin Lakes Road behind the Methow River Lodge and Cabins. Parking is available at the rink, or at the adjacent Winthrop Town Trailhead. It is a short walk from downtown Winthrop via the Spring Creek pedestrian bridge.

CHECK IT OUT

The rink is entirely outdoors, with boards around the entire surface and transparent plastic panels around most of the surface, and has regulation National Hockey League dimensions. It is lighted for late afternoon and evening operation. Hot and cold drinks and snacks are available. There are several changing rooms for hockey teams, and an upstairs gallery with windows overlooking the ice surface. The rink has its own ice-resurfacing machine.

The rink opens the first week of November and operates through March.

Programs include open skating; pickup hockey sessions (gear and helmet required) for men and women “rink rats;” youth hockey for boys and girls; lessons for beginners and advanced skaters; “cheap skate” nights with reduced rates; and Friday night themed skating sessions.

Skating equipment, and some hockey gear, are available for rental. There is no charge for helmets or hockey sticks.

Star power The Methow’s brilliant winter nights are ideal for gazing

T

he winter night sky is filled with the brightest stars that we can see all year long. I know it is cold out there, but cold air is actually much clearer than warm air, so the stars will shine like you have never seen them before.

Maybe you just want to take a quick look and then run back to that crackling fire place inside. OK, look low in the west just after sunset and before it gets completely dark. Do you see that bright object up there? That is the planet Venus and it is the most brilliant object in the night sky besides the moon. As winter progresses, Venus will get higher and higher in the western sky. By February or March, Venus will be very easy to spot so do not give up if you miss her in November or December.

so look for it when it passes Venus towards the end of each month. Watch a thin sliver of a crescent moon glide by Venus, over the course of a couple of nights, low in the west after sunset. You will have to be in a place where you can see low into the sunset without trees or your house in the way.

The old saying goes that on a clear day you can see forever, but that is nothing compared to how far you can see on a clear night.

START WITH ORION

If you want to brave the cold for a little longer, there is plenty to see up

there. You might want to get away from lights, especially those distracting Christmas lights, to get an unimpeded view of the cosmos above. Orion is a great starting place and one of the easiest constellations to find. Look for three bright stars all in a row. That is his belt, and there is nothing else up there quite like it. Then look for four stars in a big rectangle around the belt.

The star at the upper left corner of Orion is Betelgeuse, a truly super-sized star. Can you see its reddish color?

Millions of our suns would fit inside.

Astronomers tell us to watch for it to explode any day now. Their interpretation of “any day” is 20,000 or 30,000 years from now.

enough sun during these cloudy winter days? Maybe you should consider moving to Rigel, the bright star on the lower right corner of Orion. That star is so bright a sun bather would get decades worth of tanning in just a few minutes. Be sure to bring your sunscreen.

Line up the three stars in the belt and point down and to the left to the brightest star in the sky. Is it bright because it is a really bright star or because it is close to us? We can’t really tell looking up at what appears to be a twodimensional dome above us. Turns out it is close, closer than any other star we can easily see up in the sky. Its name is Sirius and if you can book a nonstop flight there, you will have plenty of time to catch up on all that reading you have been meaning to do. The journey will take you about 10 million years.

PLE A SING PLEIADES

Be sure to check out the Pleiades — everybody’s favorite little star cluster. Look above and to the right of Orion for a tight grouping of dimmer stars about the size of the full moon.

On a clear moonless night they look

like sparkling diamonds sprinkled on black velvet. Most people can see five or six of them, but actually there are about 3,000 bunched together. A pair of binoculars will show you dozens.

If you really want to go deep into the vast universe beyond us, see if you can spot our home in the big, big view above, the Milky Way galaxy. It appears to us as a glowing band of light stretching from north to south across the sky. It is so far away that the light from it has taken thousands of years to get here. What you are looking at is the combined brilliance of billions and billions of suns.

The old saying goes that on a clear day you can see forever, but that is nothing compared to how far you can see on a clear night. Up in the north, find a “W” about the size of your outstretched hand. That is Cassiopeia, the Queen. Go south from that W again about the length of your hand to an oblong fuzzy spot. A pair of binoculars will help you to pick it out. If you can find it, congratulations, you have achieved the naked eye challenge. That little spot is the most-distant thing the human eye can pick out. The light you

Backcountry bounty Snowmobiling takes you the valley’s most far-out places

S

nowmobiling in the Methow Valley is a winter adventure like no other — and it’s particularly appealing as a group activity.

Snowmobilers can access 177 miles of groomed snowmobile trails from five Sno-Parks in the Methow Valley –and also connect with routes to Conconully or Chelan.

Skiers and snowshoers are finding that snowmobiling gets them there quickly and safely. Backcountry skiers often head up the North Cascades Highway by sled, and then strap on their skis and climbing skins to get up to powder-filled bowls. Snowshoers also use snow machines to increase their options in the high country.

There’s enough information available

that you can easily explore on your own, or get to know local trails and other sled enthusiasts by joining a weekly ride with the Methow Valley Snowmobile Association. They are a friendly and experienced group.

The club’s rides take you to designated backcountry areas to play on the hills and always include a chuck wagon lunch. Club rides are open to everyone, and are a good way for less-experienced riders to team up with others. Riders typically set out in small groups from the Sno-Park.

The snowmobile association maintains two warming huts — one near Sweetgrass Butte and the other in Blackpine Basin, between the Goat Creek and Yellowjacket Snoparks — equipped with a wood stove and basic emergency supplies.

The local Mountain Trails Grooming Association grooms three times a week, although the schedule can change if conditions warrant. Groomers based in Okanogan groom from the North Summit Sno-Park at the Loup (providing connections to Conconully),

While Highway 20 west of the Methow Valley is closed to motorists during the winter, it is open to snowmobilers as far as Cutthroat Lake Road.

All snowmobiles must be registered through the Washington State Department of Licensing or a licensing agent, even if a person rides only on his or her own property.

Riding out winter The Methow’s network of fat bike trails is still growing

T

he Methow Valley’s expanding network of groomed fat biking trails has made the valley a favorite destination for fans of one of the fastest growing winter sports in the country.

“When it comes to fat biking, the Methow has it all: ideal two-wheel terrain, state-of-the-art trail maintenance and grooming expertise, sunny winter weather, reliable snow and a robust infrastructure for visitors,” said Joe Brown in an article in AdventuresNW published in February 2019.

Brown, co-owner of Methow Cycle & Sport in Winthrop, has been a local leader of the fat biking movement since it began to take hold nationally several years ago. He was a founder of Methow Fatbike, an organization of local fat bike aficionados that has been instrumental in creating fat biking trails and opportunities in the valley.

“While fat biking quickly took hold in Alaska and the Midwest, the Methow Valley was one of the first areas in the western United States to recognize the potential of the f ledgling sport,” Brown said. Renowned for its Nordic ski trail system, the Methow Valley is drawing attention for its network of approximately 50 miles of groomed fat bike trails.

The valley offers a “killer backcountry experience” for fat bikers, including the opportunity to pedal up into the Rendezvous area near Winthrop for an overnight stay in a remote and scenic hut, according to Outside Online magazine.

And the Methow Valley was recently listed in the REI Co-op online journal as one of six places

in the nation to try fat biking this winter. The article noted that Bear Creek Golf Course opened trails last winter for fat biking, as well as snowshoeing and skiing.

“One of a handful of golf clubs around the northern United States … embracing the sport, the 18-hole course earned a place on this list because its 5 miles of beginnerfriendly trails are easy to thread together with the groomed routes at adjacent Pearrygin Lake State Park and the Lloyd Ranch winter trails, for an epic day in the saddle,” the REI article said.

The fat bike trail networks at

Pearrygin and Lloyd Ranch include single track and multi-use trails developed and groomed by volunteers from Methow Fatbike. The trails offer varied terrain from easy to advanced, including challenging climbs with eye-popping views of the North Cascades and Pasayten Wilderness.

“The trails are 24 inches wide and require a careful and consistent grooming procedure to ensure that the surface is firm and cambered correctly. The result is that they resemble summer single-track trails,” Brown said in AdventuresNW. After a day in the saddle, riders can warm up at the Bear Creek Golf Course

club house with hot drinks and an outdoor fire pit.

In the heart of Winthrop, the Town Trailhead operated by Methow Trails is a hub that provides access to multi-use trails including fat bike, snowshoe and cross country ski trails, which means that family members or friends can participate in different activities in the same vicinity.

The Methow Valley has several outlets where fat bikes can be rented or purchased, and where knowledgeable folks can guide fat bikers to the best places to ride out winter in the Methow.

Fat & Fire is a 60-90 minute group ride and campfire every Wednesday night in winter, beginning mid-December (conditions permitting) and continuing through the end of February. Meet at 6 p.m. at the Pearrygin Lake State Park West Campground Trailhead with your fat bike and a good light. All levels of riders are welcome! Participants must provide their own gear. icture a vast glittering white blanket, with smooth stretches, steep folds and a few rolling bumps. Now add a shimmering river, frosted pines, majestic cottonwoods. A network of pathways spider across the blanket, running through fields, over hill and dale. Sprinkle in a couple of

cozy huts and a charming town at either end of the blanket, and you’ve got the Methow Valley trails system spread out before you, just waiting for you to clip on your skis and insert yourself into the picture.

Widely celebrated as the largest Nordic ski trails system in North America, this 200-kilometer network of skate platforms and classic tracks is one of the Methow

Valley’s biggest lures. There are five major trailheads for access to Nordic skiing in the Methow Valley; three of the main areas are linked.

The Methow Trails system comprises three main areas, all connected by the 30-kilometer Methow Community Trail, which stretches from Winthrop to Mazama with spurs up to Sun Mountain and out to Wilson Ranch and Early Winters Creek. The Sun Mountain and Rendezvous areas are the highest and thus tend to be open earliest (often by Thanksgiving) and

stay groomed the longest (through April 1 in good snow years).

METHOW COMMUNITY TRAIL. The 30K Methow Community Trail (MCT) is the most easily accessed section of trail in the system. Ski moderate terrain through sunny fields or undertake a fun point-to-point ski with some hill climbing in between Mazama and Winthrop. The self-service waxing hut at the Winthrop Trailhead is newly insulated and heated for the coming season.

SUN MOUNTAIN. The Sun Mountain trails offer varied terrain, with everything from sustained hill climbs to some relatively flat loops. A newlyroofed warming hut at the Chickadee Trailhead makes starting in this area quite comfortable and an illustrated “StorySki” makes it an appealing place to take the kids.

RENDEZVOUS. If you like hills, you’ll want to hit the Rendezvous, accessible from Cub Creek, Mazama and the Gunn Ranch Road. This area has a backcountry feel, even when you’re no more than a few kilometers from a trailhead.

THE LOUP. The Loup Loup Pass area offers a small but worthwhile Nordic option: South Summit. Located 12 miles east of Twisp, South Summit features 50K of trails with some dog-friendly options. Trail passes are not required but a Sno-Park permit, available at the Loup Loup ticket office, is. The Bear Mountain Nordic Trails at the Loup are operating when the luge is not, on Wednesdays and Fridays except during holiday weeks.

Methow Trails routes are open from dawn ’til dusk and no one will frown upon an occasional night ski as long as you stay out of the way of the groomers and stay off freshly groomed trails.

• Canadian visitors to the Methow Trails system ski at par (Canadian dollars are on par with U.S. dollars).

• New by popular request: 10-day punch cards, which offer more flexibility than a 3-day pass (which must be used on consecutive days) and more affordability than a full annual pass. Punch cards must be redeemed from any ticket vendor and are valid for two years.

• On Saturdays from Dec. 28 through Feb. 22, a free ski shuttle transports skiers to the Brown’s Farm and Mazama trailheads from Winthrop, allowing skiers to ski point-to-point along the Community Trail.

• Those tuned in to trail quality probably won’t notice the extensive trimming work that took place on Mazama trails over the summer, but they will notice a marked decrease in the number of areas that were previously shrouded by overhead branches, causing the trails beneath to become icy or bare. And in the drier seasons, these trimmed areas are Firewise compliant.

• Methow Trails recently purchased an 18-acre piece of property near Horizon Flats in Winthrop, which will eventually become the headquarters for all of the organization’s operations.

Currently, Methow Trails operates out of a small office space in downtown Winthrop and several maintenance and storage facilities throughout the valley, all of which are leased. Methow Trails will continue to operate out of its current office until a new facility can be built at the Horizon Flats property.

Catch a taste of the valley Ice fishing is relaxing and rewarding

F

resh fish in the winter?

Well, you’re in the right place.

Ice fishing opportunities can be found in the Methow Valley, or nearby.

With the right equipment, you can pierce the layer of ice in less than a minute, gaining access to a world of yellow perch, rainbow trout and kokanee. The equipment — and technique — are straightforward and inexpensive, compared to summer fishing. You don’t need a boat or highend fly-fishing gear — and you can keep your catch.

You drill a hole with an auger, scoop out the snow and ice, and drop your line in the hole with live bait or a shiny

lure and a jig to sink it. When you get a fish, you pull it straight up through the hole instead of reeling it in.

Drilling a hole, even with a handcranked auger, is surprisingly quick — a sharp auger will make a hole through more than a foot of ice in less than a minute. Most ice fishers make a hole that’s 6 to 8 inches in diameter, big enough to see what you’re doing and bring up fish easily without compromising the ice.

It’s helpful to have a bucket to use as a seat and carry home your catch.

Ice fishing is fun for kids, since they don’t need to learn to cast.

While it can be chilly, the Methow Valley’s bright, sunny winter makes it comfortable to be out long enough to get a good catch. And you can bring a wheelbarrow or metal trough to build a fire and a tent for shelter if it’s really cold.

WHERE TO GO

Best spots in the Methow Valley: • Davis Lake — winter is the only time of year you can keep rainbow trout (10-14 inches) from Davis Lake • Patterson Lake — yellow perch (no limit), rainbow trout, kokanee, bass • Best spots in the Okanogan: • Bonaparte Lake — kokanee (10-12 inches), triploid eastern brook trout, tiger trout • Leader Lake (just over the Loup Loup summit) — perch, bass, catfish, rainbow trout, black crappie, bluegill • Palmer Lake — kokanee (more than a foot long — twice the size of Patterson Lake kokanee) Limit on most species is five a day.

The shop rents full- or half-day alpine ski and snowboard packages, helmets, rentals and Nordic ski gear. Also rents inner tubes for use on its tubing hill near the lodge. Private or group downhill ski and snowboard lessons with certified instructors are available for adults and kids by the hour. “First-timer” specials include lift ticket, rental equipment and a one-hour lesson. Also try the Bear Mountain luge sledding run — take a Snowcat ride to the top and sled down on 12 kilometers of groomed trails.

The Branding Iron in Twisp is another hot spot, where on Fridays you’ll find a lively karaoke session and Saturday turns out locals on the dance floor. On Fridays from 4-7 p.m. you can participate in a Wine Shed spirits tasting. Every Friday throughout the winter features a different variety—bourbon, tequila, rum, Scotch, etc.—with three different samples and an accompanying plate of tasty snacks, as well as a quick lesson in what you’re tasting and what flavors you might notice.
