What does “me time” mean to you?

“My personal me time is spent centering myself. I am constantly adjusting and re-aligning as the demands of an entrepreneurial life can be 24/7 if allowed. I make sure that 'me' time is actually scheduled on my calendar and I look forward to long walks surrounded only by the sounds of nature.”

“I’ve always enjoyed life in balance. Me time usually involves some exercise daily. It helps to keep me mentally sharp. However on top of that I like to make sure I learn something new every day. Whether it’s a research paper, a new movement or workout, or a new song to strum along on the guitar.”

CEO / Founder

“Growing a business, being my own designer, CEO and main sales person while giving my children the attention they need and having time to spend with my husband is a daily juggle. I get incredible enjoyment out of helping others, being a mom and partner, and making beautiful candles that share light with all who experience them. But, and this is a big but...I have to have me time or I will lose my sparkle. Me time is a must! Me time is different every day, just like being an entrepreneur. I have to adjust and find creative ways to focus on my health and happiness. My favorite me time activities are... taking walks, people watching, drinking very high end coffee (at independent cafes whenever possible), writing ideas and stories, singing, browsing Pinterest for inspiration, and day dreaming.

Holiday Memories Victor L to R:

n & Dia ia, Steve

ne

A Christmas Memory I always loved Joyce Kilmer’s poem “Trees.” “I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree...”

And especially the ending:

“Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.”

Passing the Torch

For years, I woke up early on Thanksgiving, baked the pies, and had the turkey roasting. When my children woke up, the house would be filled with Thanksgiving aromas. This continued until I turned 70. My children decided that they would like to take turns hosting Thanksgiving.

Two years ago, my daughter Gayle and her husband Paul hosted. It was wonderful. Last year, our hosts were my daughter Gina and her husband of one year, Steven. Steven is English and had not celebrated Thanksgiving in the UK. We were amazed by Gina’s beautiful tablescape. She had set the stage in her backyard with a harvest theme. It was a Thanksgiving to remember

This year, my son and wife Michelle will host at a beautiful home on a hill in Laguna Beach with a view of the Pacific Ocean. I can sleep in and still have a wonderful Thanksgiving each year. – Kay Grable

Contributing MeTime Writer

I cannot hear that last line without hearing Mom’s voice, “Only God – and your father – can make a tree.” And Mom was right, Dad made beautiful trees. We didn’t have much money, so he would wait until Christmas Eve to go out “hunting” for our Christmas tree. The lots were usually picked over, leaving the remaining trees that were heavily damaged and discounted. Dad would hunt for several hours for two or sometimes three trees for under a buck each. With imagination and a good saw, he would transform these damaged little darlings into spectacular glory. I don’t know how he did it, but I do know that we always had an enviously gorgeous evergreen in our living room every Christmas.

When we were very young, my parents wouldn’t put up the tree until we were in bed on Christmas Eve. We would always wake amazed to find this magnificent vision glistening with tinsel and lights that seemed to magically appear. Mom would wake us and say, “Go look! Santa brought you a beautiful tree.” The tree was our first gift and we were elated to see its annual fairy-tale appearance. Young children are so easy to beguile and that can be a wonderful thing! – Diane L. Donohue

Alone, But Blessed for the Holidays

Like some of you, I’m almost always alone for the holidays. I’m still single, no kids, my parents have passed away, I have no siblings … not even a first cousin. The holidays for people like us can hurt. Really hurt. Sometimes friends will invite us over (a very generous gift), but the family gatherings others have this time of year just remind us of what we don’t have: the people we miss most (or wish we had) in our lives.

I’m sharing two very personal photos of how I’ve celebrated Christmas, so you who are having a bit of a rough time don’t feel like you’re alone. The picture above was during a time of transition in my life and I was between moves. Almost everything I owned was in storage. I was staying with friends (who had left for the evening to be with their family), but I still cooked the traditional Christmas Eve meal I would have with my family if they were still here. There was also a pine cone I found in the park for a Christmas tree and a string of lights from the 99 Cent Store. I also set out a plaque a friend had given me that reads, “Friends are like the stars in the sky. Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there.” My table was a nightstand. That’s about as real as it gets, but do you know what? I was even more aware of how blessed I truly am without all the “hoopla.” It was a quiet, “back to basics” Christmas Eve I’ll never forget.

The picture on the left is how I usually celebrate. Why not make your “table for one” as spectacular as you can? Turn up the music, light the candles, make a great meal and savor every minute! If a few tears fall, it’s ok. Even if no one else understands, I do! We have so much to be thankful for, let’s open our hearts to love instead of sadness this year.

I’ll join you!

The Sweetest Gift

My fondest Christmas memory has to be the one that took place 22 years ago. I remember it clearly and will never forget because I got one of the best Christmas gifts anyone could get: the birth of my daughter, Franchesca. The holidays always had special meaning – my Mom's birthday is New Year's Eve – but when I saw that beautiful little face smiling back at me it took on new meaning.

While she was young, we used to wrap half the Christmas gifts in birthday wrap and the other half in Christmas wrap. She never minded until she got older and wished her birthday was any other day than Christmas. One thing I know for sure, I’ll never forget her birthday! – Michele Broad

yesterday. I walked into the

this wonderful aroma. I wondered

I followed my nose down an aisle to

The aroma was intoxicating. I began

Objects With Purpose. – MB

MeTime Journal: How did Objects With Purpose come about? Ianthe Mauro: I've always loved lighting candles and setting intentions on the flame. As a child I remember bohemian dinner parties with candles in all shapes and sizes dripping wax long into the night. In 2009 I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease and found myself lighting candles every day making a wish to be well and strong for my 2 small children. I found out most conventional candles are toxic and could be contributing to my declining health! In researching the safest candle to burn I found coconut wax was the cleanest. I couldn't find coconut wax candles that matched my esthetic and so I created my business to share clean beautiful candles with the world! MTJ: A lot of women want to start their own businesses, how did you have the courage to follow through? IM: I was an actress most of my life. One thing my greatest mentors taught me was to work outside my comfort zone, push past the place where I felt safe and allow myself to be vulnerable. Starting a business was terrifying but it was the only way I could see myself growing, learning and eventually supporting myself. I had to go into action, even if it meant course correcting along the way. MTJ: Does your business name have a special meaning? IM: My candles are a delivery system for wishes. I wanted a name for my

business that wasn't limiting. Allowing for it to be more than just a candle. I kept asking myself, what is it I am creating? And I kept saying objects with purpose. Eventually that became the name! MTJ: How do you define Success? IM: I feel success is accomplishing something you've dreamed of, been afraid of and worked hard towards.

MTJ: What is it about your product that makes it important to Me, Miss Consumer? IM: My candles are non-toxic, vegan, 100% made in the USA and multipurpose. The predominately coconut butter wax is an amazing solid perfume when smoothed onto wrists and neck. I also encourage you to make a wish on every candle, not just on your birthday. My scents are inspired by stories and meant to evoke feelings of love, joy, inspiration and nostalgia. MTJ: Would you rather be well-liked or well-respected?

experience called "The Grove.” They recruited objects with purpose to sell right across from Nordstrom! The best part of this next big thing is the potential I have for retail sales to increase and the opportunities that come from that daily exposure to shoppers. MTJ: We're curious...who do you admire most in your field (or any other)? IM: I admire entrepreneurs. I admire people who take risks, follow their passions and set courageous goals. I admire people who work hard but in intelligent ways. I admire fellow small business owners who use kindness and love to improve the lives of others. IM: I'd like to be both! If I had to choose between well-liked and well-respected I would choose well respected. I learned that it's not a healthy goal to want everyone to like me. MTJ: How do you motivate yourself to continually care about this business passion? IM: I'm obsessed with candles! I'm obsessed with fragrance and I love creating beautiful meaningful things! I just can't imagine stopping. MTJ: We all have things to do in our business that we hate to do but do it anyway, what's yours? IM: I say I'm allergic to numbers. It's not a healthy trait in an entrepreneur so I surround myself with people who are amazing with numbers!

MTJ: Details...give us some details on what you love doing the most in your business or life? IM: I love meeting new people and inspiring them with my candles and perfumes. I love sharing stories and listening to other people's stories about their favorite scents and memories of using candles. I always say if I could give gifts every day that would be my ideal job. I'm working on it!

Some of my favorite fellow entrepreneurs are: Rheena of MaeMae jewelry, my soul sister Star Ladin, creator of the women's mastermind group that gives so much support, Star-Prenuer WEGS, Justin Krane, my financial wizard, and my business coach Joy Chudacoff. (Continued on the following page)

MTJ: What's the best part of the next thing you're doing? IM: I set a goal for 2015 that I would increase my retail sales. I wasn't sure how I would do that. Being a business that's 80% wholesale, I imagined the retail sales would have to come from my website. Now, the next big thing is a kiosk at a prominent Los Angeles shopping

MTJ: How do you want to be remembered? What impact do you want to leave on the world? (Ianthe Mauro continued from previous page)

MTJ: If money were no object what would you do next? IM: If money were no object I would give give give! I would implement all of my ideas for new candle scents, sets and packaging. I would start a non-profit group to support women entrepreneurs, giving startup funds and support. I would make huge anonymous donations to my favorite causes. I would create my dream home in my favorite theme..fairies in the forest meets Paris Flea Market.

IM: I'd like to be remembered as a loving kind person. I hope to be remembered as someone who shared light. MTJ: We need a quote. A favorite motto or mission statement?

IM: Every little gesture, even lighting a candle, can be done with purpose. MTJ: What's your favorite scent or product that you create?

IM: My scents are all so personal and important to me I can't really pick a favorite. At the moment I love my newest scent: Dirt Rich. It smells like walking through a forest looking for unicorns.

As we age, especially starting after age 40, all the way to 80, that we can lose as much as 50% of our body’s muscle mass? How do we prevent it? We must continue to do resistance exercise and take certain supplements. Those supplements are: a good complete protein powder, a whole food supplement that provides good amino acid coverage, Vitamin D, and creatine. Michele Broad, NP-C

13 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

“Can Ya Give Me Just 2 Minutes of Your Time…

Please?”

Ok, that’s your bum speaking... and your back and your hips and your legs and your heart. Just 2 minutes of “walking’ every hour significantly helps your health, especially if you have health issues already. (High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Kidney problems, etc.)

We are animals meant to move, not vegetables that just sit still.

I used to tell my students: “Your batteries are in your feet. When you move, they get recharged and energy goes up from your feet to your heart which pumps to your brain and voila… energy!! When we sit, the exact opposite happens: The energy from the brain flows down to the heart and out your button-hole. Excuse the middle school language, but it’s true. If you want energy and vitality- get up and get some! A study* was conducted on 3,600+ adults in 4 groups, based on minutes/per hour of different levels of activity:

1 Sedentary (mostly sitting all day) 2 Low (such as standing but not walking around much) 3 Light (such as strolling around the house or walking a dog) 4 Moderate/Vigorous (jogging or other form of exercise) Sitting at the TV, desk or in the car is seriously hurting us. It increases our odds of Cardiovascular Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Arthritis, Kidney Problems, and even Dementia and Depression. Simply walking around the room substantially reduces mortality risk among people who spend long periods sitting. As little as two minutes of gentle walking per hour was associated with a 33% lower risk compared to non-stop sitting.

*STUDY: Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology S. Beddhu, MD, of the University of Utah, and colleagues analyzed data from the annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The study then compared activity levels to death records, three or four years after the assessment. Results: There was little difference in mortality between the 1-Sedentary and 2-Low-activity groups. But people who interrupted their sitting with light activity were at significantly lower mortality risk than those who were sedentary. As little as two minutes an hour of activity was enough to be associated with lower risk. Moderate/Vigorous activity (group 4) further reduced risk and adding additional minutes of activity made a significant difference. Getting up from your chair for a few minutes, rather than sitting, could further reduce risk of premature death.

MTJ TAKE AWAY: Exercise is probably the only modality in health we can say for certain works to help everyone at every age and stage of life. Challenge: Set a timer for every hour and walk around! You will recharge your batteries, promise! MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

ack to school – whether you have kids, don’t have kids, watch TV, read magazines or get your style fix from the highway billboards, you can’t escape the back-to-school push. Here’s my takeaway from this deluge. The hot fashion trend is for the kids to show off their personality. What? What about us? When is the last time your boss, your spouse, your dress code or your peers actually said, “Hey Mildred, get dressed with some personality for gosh sakes!”

The Military Trend

My favorite campaign is the Old Navy commercial featuring the forever funny Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the swanky mom dropping Hunter, her lawyer looking pre-teen, off at school. He declares, “Why can’t I just look like them?”

Always neat, always tidy and always well tailored. But of course, what true soldier was ever seen with his jacket unbuttoned? The runways are full of military inspired tops and jackets which feature hammered buttons, epaulets and utility pockets. Not a fan of embellishing your top half? Introduce this trend to your wardrobe in the form of belts, bags and even boots with grommets.

Back-to-Personality Dressing by Doreen Dove

The Tweed Trend How many times have you caught yourself thinking out loud – why can’t I just look like them? Reading a recent rag sheet I came across this quote from Francisco Costa, the creative director of The Calvin Klein Collection, “I see this season’s woman being daring and sophisticated, yet sporty and free-spirited.” Yes, let’s embrace this as our back-topersonality mantra. Let’s shop with purpose by combining looks and trends to let your personality shine through. Here are a few key Fall fashion trends that you can pull inspiration from.

15 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

This traditional menswear fabric is showing up in all categories – most with fringe accents to give it that feminine touch. Look for capes, long vests, short skirts and even tweed edged handbags. Do you have an old-boring-fitted-dusty tweed jacket in your closet? Take it to the tailor for a makeover – you’d be amazed what they can do by cutting that jacket into swatch pieces – who knows – that perfect vest might be hiding under that now sleeveless jacket! Be sure to save the buttons before tossing the sleeves!

The Color Trend Fashion Week 2015 showcased 21 colors in deep rich hues and muted tones with the ever-present black and white duo bookending the list. Check your closet for color variety and if it is devoid of that, consider shopping for these – black, grey, brown, orange, red, plum, violet, pink, purple, navy, blue, mint, teal, green, citron, yellow, blush, steel, rust, olive and white.

The Suede Trend Bits and pieces of this vintage gem can really pop an outfit and bring together decades of style. Suede and fringe seem in sync this season like salt and pepper, but don’t feel you have to embrace both simultaneously. Pick up a chamois shirt, leave the top few buttons undone and pop it with a new pair of dark wash jeans complete with a flair and you are ready to rock! Scour around in your closet for something suede, no doubt you’ll find a bucket bag, belt, a pair of boots or even a vest you could repurpose. Oh what I would give to still have my purple suede knee length vest from high school! How could I possibly have thought that would never come back?

The Brocade Trend This metallic embossed woven-silk material has been around for centuries, hopefully not in your closet. This Fall the trend is showing up from head to toe. However unless you are slight of frame and 6’ tall, less is more when it comes to donning this rich fabrication. Go for clean structured lines like slim skirts, pencil pants and pointy high heels. You may think brocade is meant for the Museum gala but it also works great in the form of accessories as weekend-wear with your jeans. Think brocade bucket bags, belts, scarves or ballet flats.

Pick up a color wheel at any art supply or craft store as it can help you figure out which colors in your wardrobe can be mixed and matched. First, simply look at colors that are opposite on the color wheel, for example, purple and yellow or blue and orange. These opposite colors work very well together because they contrast each other. Secondly, notice how red and purple, situated next to each other on the color wheel, look great together because they compliment each other. The two ‘C’ words, contrast and compliment, can be used to your advantage. The third way to use the color wheel is to dress in one color, but in different hues. Using several shades of the same color, from light to dark will give you a polished look. Color is the most important component of your look and it’s the easiest way to freshen your wardrobe and reflect your own personal style. Remember that color can be pulled into your look with fabrics, accessories, shoes, and even your lipstick or nail polish.

So let’s get to work on your back-to-personality shopping with purpose. And remember – you are pretty!

Gratit ude,Schmattit ude! Thanksgiving and we all know it’s the time of year to be I t’sgrateful, at least for one day. We have been bombarded with

information on gratitude for the last decade. Oprah began a national movement when she suggested people keep a gratitude journal listing five things they are grateful for every evening before bed.

There is much scientific research to prove that gratitude makes life better. The Expanding Gratitude Project is an actual program from UC Berkeley that has several initiatives involving a Research Grant Competition, Dissertation Research Awards, a Youth Gratitude Research Project, as well as public events around understanding and celebrating gratitude. You can even record your gratefulness in a digital gratitude journal on-line (Thnx4.org). USC did an extensive study on groups and journaling and there are dozens of other studies to date. This is heady science stuff.

So, have you ever tried doing something like this? I did, for almost a year. I really wanted it to work – to make me happier – but I didn't notice any difference. I actually felt unhappy thinking I had to do this every day, as suggested, if I wanted my happiness to increase. I thought there was something wrong with me, why didn’t I feel happier? I was being grateful every single day!

My mother often tells how appreciative I was as a child, especially at Christmas. Every year we would receive new underwear and I would enthusiastically jump up and down with joy, kissing them as if they contained the winning lottery ticket. Or back then, a Willy Wonka Golden Ticket.

So after nearly a year of journaling, I abandoned the grateful list. It may sound crazy but I felt relieved of the pressure to find 5 things every day to be grateful for. It was exhausting. I was down to colors of the rainbow. I love the color blue. I’m grateful for the color indigo. It was a bit much.

I did, however, stumble on something that really does work and now research backs my finding. It has been my go-to method that makes me feel blessed and happier 100% of the time. Now with odds like that, how could you not give it a try? Ok, I have to tell you it still involves writing or journaling on a regular basis because you don’t get the same powerful effect by just thinking about it. Thoughts come and go, but words flow from your mind

onto the paper and when you read it again, they seep into your heart and stay much longer. Here’s what happened.

About 15 years ago, I was really upset with my husband – ticked off, big time. I stewed and brewed for several hours and felt like I couldn't let go of my anger and frustration. I so badly wanted to get over it and I can't even tell you what “it” was today. All I can remember is how miserable I felt.

I prayed, I breathed, I walked, I cleaned ... nothing seemed to help. So I sat down and began to list everything I loved about my husband. Let me tell you, it ain’t easy to write positive, loving things with boxing gloves on! Naturally, the first few sentences were… torture! But as my anger dissipated, the words began to flow and soon I had several paragraphs. I was relieved. Not only completely over the upsetting feelings, I literally felt good. I figured, why not continue? So I began to write about my children, my siblings, my parents and my friends. It was amazing. I was elated and I never forgot this exercise in forgiveness and gratitude.

And now science backs this technique. While people may not be much happier stating five things they’re grateful for each day, they are substantially happier if they are more specific in their writing. By choosing ONE person or issue in your life and elaborating by writing five or more grateful sentences, you will actually feel happier. And the more often you do it, the happier YOU get. Yup, you do the work and you get the happy.

So now that I, your humble researcher, have unlocked the secret to gratitude, I am entrusting you with this mission, my cherished reader. Seriously, do yourself, your relationships and your life a great service. Keep it handy so if you’re ever upset and want to forgive faster … refer to the list. It is an amazing tool to help remind you of how good that person really is and why you care for them. We all need forgiveness and appreciation too. Remember, whatever you appreciate, appreciates! Disclaimer: Proceed with caution if you are upset or angry – it will take more time and effort and results will vary. Works especially well with family members if done regularly. Side effects include warm feelings, more smiles and increased peace and happiness!

Cooking With Love

Cooking with Love for the Holidays For me, the holidays bring back memories of wonderful things baking in the kitchens of my Mom and Grandmother. Traditional (Swedish) favorites with names like rosettes, sandbakels, ostkaka, spritz and pepparkakor cookies (my favorite), fattigman, cardamom bread, julekake, krumkake … and more! I can close my eyes and still see and almost taste every one. Yum!

I’m a big fan of celebrating family heritage and traditions. It makes me feel connected to the people who, even though they lived many years ago, are the reason I’m here today. They’re my family and eating what they ate – especially during the holidays – is something special I look forward to every year. I’m so blessed to have these memories, especially since I’m the last leaf on my family tree.

Do the holidays bring back memories of gathering in the kitchen and around the table for you too? Why not find those old recipe cards this year and make a few of the dishes that will not only warm your home, but your heart as well.

If your Mom and Grandmother weren’t the cooking type, you can start some traditions of your own! If you’re like me and love to experience the foods from “the old country,” search for recipes by country and holiday online. There are many cookbooks available too.

If trying “foreign” foods is not your thing, cook the foods you and your family like with a little holiday flair. Make a pie instead of defrosting one. Bake homemade rolls instead of reheating them. Slow down a little and make things fresh and from scratch. Have the kids/grandkids trim the little tails off the green beans instead of opening a can. Teach and show them how to cook and the importance of healthy eating. If you don’t, who will?

Nothing tastes better than home cookin’ made with love! Don’t be surprised if you have more fun than you thought you would. You’ll create more than just a delicious meal together, but lasting memories too.

Keep Your Pets Safe During the Holidays Dr. Adrienne Moore DVM

The holidays present unique hazards to pets but steps can be taken to keep them safe. 1. Christmas Tree

• Make sure it is secure and can't be easily knocked over by a climbing cat or playful pup.

• Do not allow pets to drink from the tree stand. The water can be a breeding ground for bacteria which can result in vomiting and diarrhea.

• Keep fragile ornaments & tinsel out of reach. Cats tend to be attracted to tinsel which can be hazardous if swallowed. • Strings of popcorn should be kept up out of reach.

• Keep all wiring out of reach of pets that might chew on them.

2. Decorations

Do not allow pets to chew on items such as snow globes, which can contain toxins such as anti-freeze (ethylene glycol). Many other items can present choking hazards or cause obstructions if ingested.

• Do not give treats that contain

raisins or grapes which can cause kidney failure, so no fruitcake.

• Keep all chocolates out of reach,

as well as any candies or treats containing Xylitol.

• Keep alcoholic beverages out of

reach. Many pets will sample from glasses left unattended, and alcohol is rapidly absorbed and can be very dangerous if ingested.

5. Flames

• Make sure a screen is present in front of any fireplace or open flame. • Keep candles out of reach to not

only prevent the animal being burned but also to safeguard against them knocking candles over and starting a disastrous fire.

3. Plants

• While Poinsettias are known to be toxic, the effects tend to be mild.

• Ingestion of holly or mistletoe results in vomiting & diarrhea and mistletoe can also cause cardiovascular symptoms, including cardiac arrhythmias. • Many species of lily will cause kidney failure in cats if even a small amount is ingested.

4. Foods

• Do not give scraps of fatty or spicy foods which can cause gastrointestinal problems, including life threatening pancreatitis.

25 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

6. Guests

• If you will be having guests over, make sure nervous animals have a quiet place where they can feel safe. • Make sure that overnight guests

keep all medications out of reach and inaccessible to pets.

Why Your Mouth Impacts Your Life Expectancy

5 Major Diseases Linked to Poor Dental Health by Dr. Steven Lin

food and begin chemical breakdown via enzymes contained in saliva.

We often misunderstand the way our overall health is influenced by different parts of our body. But it’s almost certain that we underestimate the role in which our mouth plays in how long we will live.

Teeth And Jaw – Part Of Your Skeletal System

Sounds silly? Dying because of poor oral health? The evidence is mounting between the link between people with severe gum disease, as they are twice as likely to die before age 64 than their mouthhealthy counterparts.

Your teeth and jaw support the structure and opening of your airways and digestive tracts. The way the lower and upper jaws relate to each other is controlled by how the teeth occlude (or bite) together and is developed by our breathing and swallowing habits as we grow up.

Happy Mouth, Happy Life The mouth is an integral and vital part of your body. It supports the tongue, teeth and salivary glands. Its primary function is to mechanically break down

27 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

Development problems can cause the head and neck to sit in different positions in order to compensate for our shifted jaw relation and lead to lifelong skeletal alignment and posture problems.

Your Gums – A Highly Vascular Network

Diseases Linked To Oral Health #3

Pregnancy and Low Birth Weight

When the tissues that support your mouth and teeth are unhealthy, you’re prone to developing periodontal disease (gum disease). This inflammation can be compared to having an infected wound that covers your entire forearm! As you can imagine, this puts quite a large strain on your body.

Pre-term infants who are born with low birth weights are still a major health and family problem in the modern world.

Over time, this inflammation releases chemicals into your system that can cause problems throughout your entire body. There are different levels of understanding of the links between this inflammation and other diseases. However this is what we know so far.

There are many risk factors associated with low birth weight including: alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. However, research has shown the inflammatory process of gum disease may also been linked to an increased risk of pre-term births.

Diseases Linked To Oral Health #4

Here are 5 diseases that have been linked to oral health. Diseases Linked To Oral Health #1

Heart Disease Evidence continues to support an association among periodontal infections and heart disease. Periodontal disease is the breakdown of tissues that support the teeth caused by a high bacteria load in the mouth. Experts know that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream through the gums. The same bacteria have been found clumped in artery plaques. One theory is that these bacteria directly contribute to blockages that can cause heart attack and stroke

Diseases Linked To Oral Health #2

Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Loss Another consequence of poor oral health may be linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease and consequently, memory loss. Again, early studies have observed bacteria linked to gum disease travelling to areas of the brain that are of concern for people with memory loss. There is also data showing a link between people who reported tooth and gum disease having lower scores on tests that measured memory and cognition.

Diabetes Diabetics are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes; this is because diabetics have a weakened immune response that allows the gum disease process to progress. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of diabetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. However, research has suggested that the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease may go both ways - periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar.

Diseases Linked To Oral Health #5

Osteoporosis Osteoporosis has wide-spread consequences amongst the joints of the body and whilst is not caused by periodontal disease – which is an inflammation and bacterial infection – can accelerate the loss of the jaw-bone (that supports the teeth) more severely when both diseases are present.

You Don’t Have to Gain Weight Over the Holidays Take Our Holiday Challenge with a Friend! What do you think of when you

Every year before Thanksgiving I’ve been

doing the Holiday challenge along with my

the foods and treats will lead the way.

(Monday) January 4th. Now you can too!

The holidays are fast approaching and

You may only get gifts on Christmas day

but there’s plenty of food to celebrate from

November through New Year’s! You're

probably thinking that’s the best part of

the holidays.

It may be enjoyable while you’re eating

but many Americans wind up gaining

unwanted weight that they never lose.

Never? Yes, never! It may only be a pound

or two but it stays on and adds up, year

coaching clients from November 15th to

don’t gain. Simple? It can be with some

strategies to keep you on track and happy

at the same time.

Here’s How:

1) Pair up with someone for

by Diane L. Donohue

STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU SUCCEED: 1) Budget: Treat your calories like a

checking account. It takes 3500 calories to

gain a pound. It’s hard to believe you could

eat that many more calories in one week

to gain a pound, but it’s easy. People do it

all the time. To gain (or lose) one pound you divide and conquer. 3500 calories / 7 days is 500 calories per day.

2) Now Do the Math: The average dinner

party (or restaurant) meal is 2000 calories.

Add appetizers, desserts and drinks and

the calories are close to 4000. There’s your pound – or more. So if you eat normally

most people don’t ever lose the pound or

Since you don’t gain weight in 10 pound

increments, it’s the holiday 1 or 2 that

seems to be the culprit. Overweight people

gained five pounds on average and it starts

holiday weight gain among college

students during the Thanksgiving break

and found the same exact thing.

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of a

person for safe keeping.

4) On Monday, January 4th

weigh yourself with them to verify your weight.

5) Get the card back and pat yourself on the back!

NOTE: You can add more incentive by committing to donate a dollar amount, say $25 dollars, to an organization you dislike (the opposite political party or pick another).

So how can you enjoy the holidays just as

much and not gain weight?

Take Our Holiday Challenge!

3) Plan Ahead: Eat less during the week,

function where calories stack up. Skip

breakfast and eat something very small at

lunch if you are attending a function that evening. Eat 200 calories during the day

and save the rest for your “splurge” meal.

You may find you are doing this on several days during the week to “save” your

calories for your treats and dinner parties. 4) No Thank You: Choose to eliminate a

problem food or drink completely. Some

of us are “all or nothing” folks. One is

never enough. If you can’t eat one small

treat, don’t eat any. I had to eliminate

baklava, the Greek sweet. I could eat a

dozen. Not good. Maybe you’ll decide to

skip appetizers and snacks. Every little bit

saves you calories and won't mess up your

food budget or your waistline.

Good Luck! It’s actually a fun challenge,

keeps you feeling in control and less

Forget Diamonds... Girlfriends are a Girl’s Best Friend!

Spend at least one hour each week with a close friend.

Regular social contact with a close friend helps

boost self-confidence and encourages you to make other positive changes that can lift depression and help you handle life’s stress more easily.

In a British study, when 86 depressed women were paired with a volunteer friend for about an hour, 65% felt better. In fact, regular social contact

worked as effectively as antidepressant medication and psychotherapy.

Research from the Universities of Manchester and Warwick, also suggest that being around people with healthy moods also helps with depression. Good news: Spending time with people who are

depressed doesn't make a healthy person any more

likely to become depressed themselves.

In other words, good moods may be contagious – but bad ones aren't!

ask michele with Michele Broad, NP-C

This month’s ask Michele is from Phyllis M. who wants to know how she can lower her blood pressure without taking medication. Well Phyllis, you can’t change some things when it comes to improving your odds against getting hypertension. Some women get high blood pressure as they age, and rolling back the clock isn’t an option for most of us.

: Dear Michele y rm How can I l owree wit hout bl ood pressuicat ion? taking med l l is M. P hy

You also can’t change your genetic markers. I always say that genetics loads the gun but our habits pull the trigger. Here are five things that you can do to lower your blood pressure with a more natural approach and push the trigger finger in a more positive direction. First, you should strive to put healthy habits in place and more importantly keep them in place once you have established them. Eating healthy can lower your blood pressure. Your diet should consist of natural foods like fruits and vegetables and lean organic meats that are healthier for you. Some foods can contribute to high blood pressure, such as processed foods, red meats, and foods high in sugar. Having too many salty foods and/or adding a lot of salt to your diet can cause elevated blood pressure too. Eating the wrong kinds of food can also lead to unwanted weight gain, which in turn can also cause high blood pressure. I don’t know if you consume alcohol or not, but if you do, consider cutting back on it or stopping altogether, as alcohol raises blood pressure and so does smoking. Second, you need to maintain a healthy body weight. For a woman, a healthy body weight can be determined by age, height and body frame. If you are significantly overweight and feel overwhelmed at the thought of losing, focus on a small portion of weight loss at a time. Aim for just a ten percent weight loss when you first start. Shedding even ten percent of your total body weight can lower you blood pressure.

31 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

Third, exercise can lower your blood pressure and lessen how hard your heart has to work. Even if you absolutely hate the thought of exercise, there are still ways that you can get active doing things you enjoy. For example, if you like swimming, you can swim. Even though it’s a fun activity, it’s still exercise so it’s helping lower your blood pressure. Engaging in games like tennis or racquetball can lower your blood pressure just like jogging or an aerobic workout can. Fourth, to lower your blood pressure, lower your level of stress. Stress or chronic worrying can raise your level. Change what you can that causes stress, but learn ways to manage stressful things that aren’t going to change. Finally, if you’re eating right, have healthy habits in place, are maintaining your weight and avoiding stress but still have high blood pressure, you can always try some natural supplements from a reputable health food store to help lower it. If those don’t help, it may be time to see your medical provider to discuss medical options.

Think Twice, Spend Less

by Diane L. Donohue

Spending your money wisely is a gift you give yourself, not just during the holidays, but anytime. Here’s a list of Money Regrets/ Wasters I compiled from Forbes, Investor’s Weekly and Money magazines. Do you agree? Gift Cards Americans spend tons on gift cards and the amount left on them is staggering. If you buy them as gift, buy in small amounts. No greater than $25 and give the rest in cash. There are sites that buy back the remainder but they take about 8%. Not worth it!

Battery Operated Kid’s Toys Whether its specialized sports equipment or a trendy toy, kids lose interest quickly. The novelty wears off faster than the desire. Battery-powered toys tend to lose their appeal the fastest. Remember, if the toy does all the work, there’s no need for imagination. Boring!!

Specialized Kitchen Appliances Pasta maker, bread machine, Panini press — you name it, there’s a machine for it. Specialized items are a problem to store and you rarely use them which makes them a waste of space and money!

Monthly Clubs A few times a year is nice, but every month? We can’t even read our stack of monthly magazines. So skip the cheese, fruit or wine club, unless you entertain often. If you do, call me!

Home Party Products How much makeup, cooking items, candles and jewelry can you have? Too much! Do yourself a favor and pass on the invitation or tell your friend you just can't buy another thing right now. Then buy her a bottle of wine as a consolation. She’ll love ya!

33 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

First Generation Technology If you’ve ever purchased the latest and greatest “new” gadget, you already know… rip off! Wait until the bugs of the first generation are worked out and watch the price drop as the demand increases. As-Seen-on-TV Products From knives that claim to cut through steel to exercise gadgets/videos that look too good to resist, many products sold on TV aren’t as miraculous as they portray. And with the "unbelievably low price" or sometimes “free” price, you get high shipping and handling costs. The hassle of the return or getting your money back requires, many times, a true miracle.

Cosmetics Do we really need to explain this? Fact: Women over-buy cosmetics and beauty products. American bathrooms are filled with half-used creams and lipsticks. With lotions and potions cheaper and plenty, many women don’t

appreciate them as a gift – unless it’s in the fragrance they adore. Then it’s great. So, ask before purchasing this as a gift. Saves time, money and frustration. That’s a deal! Trendy Fashions/Designer Clothes Americans (mostly women) spend way too much (over $250 billion) every year on clothes and apparel. Then we look in the closet and say, “I’ve got nothing to wear.” Crazy! Fashions come and go but classic well-made clothes are a better buy in the long run. Gym Memberships/Exercise Equipment 10% of Americans consistently exercise (work out regularly 3x or more a week for 5 years or more). 25% exercise for a year and 75% use gym equipment

and memberships for less than 3 months. Do the math. If you want a piece of exercise equipment, buy it used. Thrift stores, garage sales, online or even local penny savers have tons of “gently used” equipment to sell.

Pet Toys The Journal of “Animal Cognition” set out to find the truth behind dogs and toys. Worse than kids, dogs lose interest in toys faster - about 30 seconds. A little longer only if you participate. They tend to like toys that either taste like food, can be torn apart, and/or make a noise. If they can’t chew it and it doesn’t make a peep, what’s the point? Squeak toys, ropes, balls, even socks and plastic bottles are favorites. Bottom line – don’t buy more.

Send your top money wasters, peeves and blunders to Editor@MeTimeJournal.com May as well laugh!

Love

Can’t Buy Me

by Diane L. Donohue

Study shows materialistic couples have more money AND more problems Research confirms that The Beatles were right. Their lyrical hypothesis finds that "the kind of thing that money just can't buy" is a happy and stable marriage. Researchers studied 1,734 married couples across the United States*. Each couple completed a relationship evaluation, part of which asked how much they value "having money and things." The statistical analysis showed that couples who say money and things are not important to them score 10-15% higher on marriage stability and other measures of relationship quality (than couples where one or both are more materialistic.) MTJ Take Away: The study used self-evaluations which were most eye opening. Honestly looking at how you value things/money and knowing it affects your relationships is a big step to becoming happier. The more you think about and value having money and things, the less happy your marriage will be. No wonder Americans are so miserable! By Linda Carlberg CONFESSION S OF A RECO VERING CHE ESAHOLIC / File 3

Carrot Cake Exposé:

Mom’s vs. The Grocery Store Bakery

Yes, That’s Mom’s Silver Flatware Too!

I

had planned to do another topic for my article this month, but this one “found me.” I was at my neighborhood grocery store walking through the bakery section and thought, “I’m actually craving a little dessert.” Mind you, sweets are not my thing. I’m a cheese/cream/ starch craver. I looked at all the choices and decided on a piece of carrot cake.

After I got home, I had a few bites and it was pretty good. I finished it a day or two later and as I was throwing away the plastic box it came in, turned it over to look at the label. I couldn’t believe it! Not only were there dozens of ingredients, anything natural was held together by artificial additives, colors and flavors. Anyone know what glucono delta-lactone is? Me neither! There were also antioxidants and preservatives – even though this was “fresh” from an in-store bakery. I thought about my Mom’s carrot cake and remembered how much I loved it. Then I was on a mission to compare how many ingredients she used (13, well 14 if you add

35 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

raisins). I dug through three recipe boxes to find it, and guess what? Glucono delta-lactone wasn’t on the list! Over the last few years, I’ve been learning about healthy nutrition and what’s really in the food we eat. The carrot cake is just one example. What I’ve discovered not only made me change what I eat, but it’s made me a bit of a crusader. Do all of these chemical additives and artificial ingredients contribute to disease and long-term health issues? I believe they do. Now I try to avoid processed and fast food as much as possible. I buy organic, eat meat less and less – and cook a lot more! Well, I not only found Mom’s recipe, I made it (see above). She would be so proud, as I don’t bake. The last time was probably as a little girl – with her! Was it worth the extra effort? Yes, for three reasons: 1) as it baked, my house smelled like a warm hug at Grandma’s house, 2) it was delicious, 3) I shared five pieces with five friends who ate every bite. One even said, “you made my day.” Now that’s worth it!

2 C. Flour 2 C. Sugar 2 tsp. Cinnamon 2 tsp. Baking Soda 1 tsp. Salt 1-1/2 C. Vegetable Oil 4 Eggs, beat 3 C. Grated Carrots ½ C. Chopped Nuts (I used walnuts) Optional: Add ½ C. Raisins (I did!)

Frosting (beat and whip together):

2 C. Powdered Sugar 2 oz. Butter 1 8 oz. package of Cream Cheese (softened)

Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. (In my oven, 40 minutes was a little too long, so don’t overbake)

Frost when cake is cool.

NOTE: I used organic ingredients for the most part,

including wheat flour. I also used a blonde coconut sugar (lower glycemic index), which has a light brown sugar flavor. YUM!

Do You Watch What YOU Eat?

ere are just a FEW of the chemical additives found in today’s food supply. When you read labels, don’t just look at the calories, sugar and sodium content. Learn about the man-made ingredients and think twice before putting them in your body – or your family’s. We can all make better choices. Better choices lead to better health. Who doesn’t want that?

Acrylamides: Toxic, cancer-causing chemicals formed in foods when carbohydrates are exposed to high heat (baking, frying, grilling). They're present in everything from bread crusts to snack chips, and because they aren't intentional ingredients, acrylamides do NOT have to be listed on labels. Aspartame: Chemical sweetener that can cause neurological disorders, seizures, blurred vision and migraine headaches. Autolyzed Proteins: Highly processed form of protein containing free glutamate and used to mimic the taste-enhancer chemical MSG. BPA (Bisphenol-A): A hormone mimicking chemical found in nearly all food packaging plastics. Active in just parts per billion, BPA promotes cancer, infertility and hormone disorders. It also "feminizes" males, promoting male breast growth and hormone disruption. Food Colors: Nearly all artificial food colors are derived from petroleum, and many are contaminated with aluminum. Genetically Modified Ingredients: Not currently listed on labels. Nearly all conventionally grown corn, soy and cotton are GMOs. High Fructose Corn Syrup: A highly processed liquid sugar extracted with the chemical solvent glutaraldehyde and frequently contaminated with mercury. It's also linked to diabetes, obesity and mood disorders. Used in thousands of grocery items.

Homogenized Milk: The fats in milk are artificially modified to change them into smaller molecules that stay in suspension in the milk liquid (so the milk fat doesn't separate). While it makes milk look better on the shelf, it's also blamed for promoting heart disease and may contribute to milk allergies.

selenium (cancer), chromium (diabetes) and zinc (infectious disease). Much like with bread and sugar, white salt is terrible for your health. And don't be fooled by claims of "sea salt" in grocery stores. All salt came from the sea if you go far back enough in geologic time, so they can slap the "sea salt" claim on ANY salt!

Hydrochloride: When you see anything hydrochloride, such as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride or Thiamin Hydrochloride, those are chemical forms of B vitamins that companies add to their products to be able to claim higher RDA values of vitamins. But these are synthetic, chemical forms of vitamins, not real vitamins from foods or plants. Nutritionally, they are near useless and may actually be bad for you. Also watch out for niacinamide and cyanocobalamin (synthetic vitamin B-12).

Sodium Nitrite: A cancer-causing red coloring chemical added to bacon, hot dogs, sausage, beef jerky, ham, lunch meats, pepperoni and nearly all processed meats. Strongly linked to brain tumors, pancreatic cancers and colon cancers. Sodium nitrite is used to make meats look fresh.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein: A highly processed form of (usually) soy protein that's processed to bring out the free glutamate (MSG). Used as a taste enhancer. Partially Hydrogenated Oils: Oils that are modified using a chemical catalyst to make them stable at room temperature. This creates trans fatty acids and greatly increases the risk of blocked arteries. Phosphoric Acid: The acid used in sodas to dissolve the carbon dioxide and add to the overall fizzy-ness of the soda. Phosphoric acid will eat steel nails. It's also used by stone masons to etch rocks. The military uses it to clean the rust off battleships. In absolutely destroys tooth enamel. Propylene Glycol: A liquid used in the automotive industry to winterize RVs. It's also used to make the fake blueberries you see in blueberry muffins, bagels and breads (combined with artificial colors and corn syrup) and many other products. Sodium (Salt): The processed white salt lacking in trace minerals. Real salt, on the other hand, such as "dirty" sea salt or pink Himalayan salt, is loaded with the trace minerals that can prevent disease, such as

37 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

Soy Protein: The No. 1 protein source used in "protein bars," including many bars widely consumed by bodybuilders. Soy protein is the "junk protein" of the food industry. It's made from genetically modified soybeans (often grown in China) and then subjected to hexane, a chemical solvent that can literally explode. Sucralose: An artificial chemical sweetener sold as Splenda. The sucralose molecule contains a chlorine atom. Researchers have repeatedly found that artificial sweeteners make people fat by actually promoting weight gain. Sugar: The bleached, nutritionallydeficient byproduct of cane processing. During sugar cane processing, nearly all the minerals and vitamins end up in the blackstrap molasses that's usually fed to farm animals because ranchers know they need good nutrition to stay alive (blackstrap molasses is actually the "good" part of sugar cane juice). Sugar contributes to diabetes, obesity, and many other disorders including cancer. Yeast Extract: Hidden form of MSG that contains free glutamate and is used in many "natural" food products to claim "No MSG!" Yeast extract contains up to 14% free glutamate. You'll find it in thousands of grocery store products, from soups to snack chips. Excerpts edited from: http://www.naturalnews.com/033162_food_ingredients_chemicals.html

Calendula

Sooth Your Winter Skin with Sunny

by Michele Broad, NP-C

Since I am always cold and my skin is always dry, my family jokingly refers to me as “the reptile.” So you can imagine winter isn't a great time for me. I'm always on the lookout for natural healing remedies and this year I got to enjoy and relish the healing properties of calendula. Calendula is also known as “pot Marigold” and is pretty famous around the world. I grew some this summer and I nicknamed my beautiful friend Goldie, due to her golden/orange color. This beauty is high in flavonoids, which are plant-based antioxidants that protect our cells from free-radical damage. Calendula fights inflammation, viruses, bacteria, and fungal infections. My research has led me to several studies showing that calendula can speed the healing of cuts, abrasions, and minor burns by helping our bodies increase blood flow and collagen production. This also helps us age more gracefully, reducing fine lines and age spots. She is also known to help dermatitises like eczema and helps with athlete’s foot also. I find it fascinating that all around us are wonderful healing aids that are safe and often better than prescription medication. Calendula has helped moisturize my parched skin. She is a gentle beauty that packs a mighty punch of hydration to anything she touches, even to the most delicate skin. I find the layering method is the best way to get full hydration benefits. Start with some infused calendula bath oil, then use a calendula infused bath soap for a luxurious lathering experience, followed by some calendula body lotion, and finish by cleansing your face with a calendula based cleansing oil. Don’t worry, facial cleansing oil won’t make your face oily even if you have oily skin – but that’s a subject for another article. I hope you will try calendula soon and experience for yourself her powerful but gentle soothing properties.

Badger’s Unscented Face Cleansing Oil is a great calendula-infused cleansing oil. If you were the queen of an ancient civilization, you would have used this amazing blend to cleanse your beautiful skin. Inspired by thousands of years of skin care tradition, this Unscented Cleansing Oil gently cleanses and soothes sensitive skin. Castor and Apricot lifts impurities, Calendula reduces redness and irritation, while Olive and Sunflower replenish essential vitamins, fatty acids, and lipids. Clears away makeup and impurities—leaving your skin feeling clean, balanced, and glowing! Clinically tested hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. http://www.badgerbalm.com For your body, try Weleda Baby Calendula Face Cream. It is a gentle, all-natural moisturizer made with 96% organic ingredients that support skin's natural functions and keeps your baby's facial skin soft and smooth. Soothing organic calendula flower, grown in Weleda's own Biodynamic® gardens in Germany, calms inflammation and provides a protective layer of warmth and comfort. Essential fatty acids from organic sweet almond oil and fairly traded beeswax are easily absorbed by baby's skin to enhance and maintain its natural moisture. Like all Weleda products, it's free of synthetic fragrance, chemical preservatives or petroleum-derived ingredients. http://usa.weleda.com/ For a creamy lathering experience try Planned Perfectly’s Calendula Soap. Infused with the wonderful herb calendula, this soap is a mild, skin-loving and nourishing bar that is good for the whole body. This gentle soap is also good for the whole family; from babies to grandparents. Calendula is a wonderful herb that has been used for years in various cultures as a remedy and for its skin-soothing properties. http://www.plannedperfectlyllc.com

“Ahhh.... Nothing feels better than the opportunity to fully express myself as a woman, and for me, it translates into sharing my thoughts in words. I celebrate "me time" on a daily basis by writing every single day, no matter where I am in the world. I begin each writing session with rituals that start my creative juices... beginning with a cappuccino, music, and then a prayer asking for whatever flows from my pen has value and purpose. This is my time to reveal my thoughts, my fears, my hopes and dreams. In a way, it's writing the vision for the next act of my life. I believe every woman has a story and every woman's story is her legacy. Creating that is the perfect way to celebrate “me.’” MeTime Reader Sandy Peckinpaugh www.SandyPeckinpah.com

“A celebration of Me Time is during moments of quiet and self-reflection. I consider any opportunity to connect with my body, either through dance, yoga or a nice walk/hike is what keeps me centered, grounded and in the best position to take care of myself and family.” MeTime Reader Kenya Moses www.beafitmama.com

“My favorite me time is spent with my grandkids teaching them how to be healthy, especially when I can combine it with my other passion, teaching Pilates.” MeTime Reader Sunni Almond www.temeculapilates.com Our very own Michele enjoying some me time at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, getting ready for a Don Henley concert

Tell us something we need to know to better understand your product or service.

Financial advice is in many cases unaffordable for those who don’t have investible assets, and along with it, financial literacy. Money Savvy Woman was created to give every person the opportunity to get the advice they need to get them on the path towards financial independence.

2

Who or what inspired you to begin your venture?

I’d been in business for over a decade and realized that many of my clients suffered from financial illiteracy and poor mindsets around their money. Many couldn’t talk about money without fear, anger, or anxiety. Once I started teaching at a community college, these patterns were magnified in my students. It was clear, students wanted a faster way to learn and get advice than spending a full semester in a class room. They were seeking advice and answers, but believed they couldn’t afford it. I knew I had to find a better way for them to get the advice they needed.

3

Is there an interesting fact about your product or service you’d like to share?

I work with clients face-to-face or over the phone and internet, whatever works best for them. Additionally, I teach clients how to talk about money and manage it so they become debt-free and investing in their goals and future.

4

Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or Mission Statement you’d like to share?

“If you want something you’ve never had, then you must do something you’ve never done.” Why? Because so often my clients come in expecting that I can deliver success on a silver platter. It takes a commitment to doing things differently to get the results they want. Once they get a taste of success based on their new actions, they believe they CAN …can do it themselves, can reach their goals—both big and small, and can have the lifestyle of their own design.

5

If there were one lesson you’ve learned along the way to pass on to other women, what would it be?

Only YOU can make your dreams come true— no one can do it for you. Personal responsibility and integrity are what matters most.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Tell us something we need to know to better understand your product or service.

I believe the inspiration to write a book is, more often than not, a Divine Invitation to step into the next expression of one’s life purpose. Our coaching process nurtures the development of the Message and the MessagePreneur. The goal is to never crank out a book – it’s to uncover, nurture, and launch a book, a brand, and a life that are true to the client’s highest, truest intention.

2

Who or what inspired you to begin your venture?

My life completely changed the day someone asked me, “What value do you have to give to the world NOW?” I saw the book, the bestseller status, and the people I would work with and immediately transformed from a depressed, scared young woman to an inspired co-creator of my life. I stepped into the Magic of knowing what I am here to do and share, and began the journey of healing and serving that has made my life unrecognizable. My favorite moments in my work are the ones where I see this happen for my clients.

3

Is there an interesting fact about your product or service you’d like to share?

Because we are working with people’s often very raw-and-fragile stories and hearts, we work with only a few people at a time in a quiet, safe, and sacred space.

43 MeTime Journal™ | August/September 2015

4

Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or Mission Statement you’d like to share?

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” ~ Albert Einstein ~ I used to hang my hat on “Be the Change You Want to See” by Mahatma Ghandi because what we’re really up to over here is helping people to more clearly see and more powerfully share and own and live their message. But this quote has been talking to me lately because the deeper I go with clients, the more I stand in wonder at the Divine Orchestration of their stories and journeys back to LOVE. Even the Upside-Down – the uncertainty + the journey of healing old stories – is full of Miracles when we look for them.

5

If there were one lesson you’ve learned along the way to pass on to other women, what would it be?

You wouldn’t have the desire if you didn’t also have the means in and around you. Write and rewrite and polish your own script for your book, your brand, and your life.

Tell us something we need to know to better understand your product or service.

Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less. If you are not the leader of your business or career and ultimately your life, you cannot fully live out the mission that you were uniquely called to fulfill in this world. The secret to unlocking that influence is to master the art of connection and positioning. Thousands of women from all over the globe have been coached by or trained with me resulting in doubling their income, getting 6-figure opportunities, and spending more time with the people they love.

2

Who or what inspired you to begin your venture?

I’m an “accidental” entrepreneur. The event that inspired me to own my own business was getting married. I wanted to engage in meaningful work that would allow me to make a difference in the world while living my values of Freedom, Fun, and Flexibility to increase time for Family, Friends, and my Faith. I never had any idea what I would be embarking on when I made that decision. What a wild ride it’s been!

3

Is there an interesting fact about your product or service you’d like to share?

Positioning is not the same as visibility. You can be incredibly visible but if you aren’t positioned for profit, you’ll continue to come up short in attracting the right opportunities, influence and income.

4

Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or Mission Statement you’d like to share?

The world is made for those who stand out, not those who fit in. I’ve witnessed many incredibly talented and brilliant women fail to claim their greatness for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, the world and the people who need their gifts then miss out.

5

If there were one lesson you’ve learned along the way to pass on to other women, what would it be?

You are the one you have been waiting for... and you are perfect in all of your imperfections.
