Confession, but details don’t add up REUTERS

BROOKLYN. Levi Aron, the

man accused of murdering and dismembering Leiby Kletzky, pleaded not guilty Thursday in court despite the fact that he confessed to the gruesome crime, according to court documents.

And police are now trying to account for several holes in his story about what exactly happened to the 9-year-old boy. Aron said that he picked up Kletzky on Monday and then took him to a wedding in Monsey, N.Y. Aron

reportedly said he killed the boy Tuesday. But police could only confirm Aron, not the boy, attended the wedding, and think that the child was murdered on Monday. Police said Kletzky’s body was found with cuts and

scratches on his wrists and forearms, suggesting that the boy struggled. Aron’s attorney said his client hears voices, and he was placed under suicide watch in jail. His ex-wife claims he once worked as a butcher. METRO/AB

Mummy smuggler arrested: Officials

Smuggler sneaked in 2,000-year-old Egyptian artifacts Mum was the word as he tried to quietly slip coffins past border agents as ‘wood panels’

Letterman ICE

A Brooklyn man was arraigned Thursday on charges that he smuggled mummy coffins through New York City ports. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Mousa Khouli, 37, alleging that he sneaked in Egyptian artifacts more than 2,000 years old using his midtown antiques business. Khouli used his business to sell the priceless items, according to prosecutors. Khouli and Joseph Lewis, part of the alleged smuggling ring, were arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court. Another man, Salem Alshdaifat, was arraigned separately in Michigan on Wednesday. Officials said the three men shipped Egyptian antiquities from the United Arab Emirates to the United States by lying to customs officials, telling them the objects were “wood panels” or just a “painted box.” Instead, when officials searched Khouli’s business and his Brooklyn home, they found several centuries-old Greco-Roman Egyptian sarcophagi, the coffin-like receptacles where mummies were stashed. They also found hidden Egyptian funerary boats, a three-part coffin dating back to approximately 600 B.C. and a thousand antique coins. Nabbing smugglers bringing in mummy coffins

Another Letterman set attack MIDTOWN. After a boozed-up man allegedly wrecked David Letterman’s box office Sunday, another man took his anger out on the studio lobby early Thursday morning. Police said that Alvin Moore, 42, tried to break the windows with a newspaper box. Moore was reportedly angry at Letterman for not responding to his demo tapes. METRO/AB

Not so fast, Gov. Cuomo

Federal agents said they found Khouli hiding this Egyptian sarcophagus dating back to 600 B.C., along with items at right.

“What makes this case significant is for the first time, we have dismantled a smuggling network.” ICE SPOKESMAN LOU MARTINEZ

is a first for federal prosecutors here in Brooklyn. “We’ve had a few cases where we’ve recovered stolen art,” said Robert Nardoza, a spokesman for the United States Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York. “But I

don’t recall sarcophagi,” he added. “Coffins, no.” Each man faces up to 20 years in prison. The artifacts will likely be shipped back to Egypt. ALISON BOWEN

ALBANY. President Cuomo? Easy partner, New Yorkers say. According to a Siena poll, 83 percent of New Yorkers do not think Gov. Andrew Cuomo should run for president. Only 14 percent of voters thought he should try for the nation’s top office in 2016, preferring he fix the state’s problems first. However, 39 percent said they would support seeing Cuomo as Obama’s running mate in 2012. METRO/AB

The median price of newly built condos that sold this past spring was $535,000, a 9.9 percent jump from a year earlier, New York appraiser Miller Samuel Inc. and broker Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate said Thursday in a joint report. The median price of all Brooklyn condos, co-ops and one- to three-family houses increased 3.7 percent to $480,000. The outlook in Queens, however, isn’t so rosy. There, sales plunged 41

FBI sets its sights on News Corp. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will investigate allegations that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. tried to hack into the phone records of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, the agency said on Thursday. “We’re looking into allegations raised by the letter by Peter King yesterday,” said an FBI source, asking not to be identified. News Corp declined to comment on the FBI probe. The Daily Mirror reported that News of the World journalists offered to pay a New York police officer to retrieve the private phone records of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Daily

Mirror, citing an unidentified source, said journalists wanted the phone numMurdoch bers of the dead as well as details of the calls they made and received in the days leading to the attacks. Murdoch last week shut down the News of the World, Britain’s top-selling Sunday tabloid, on a growing firestorm over allegations grew that its journalists had illegally accessed voicemails of thousands of people, from child murder victims to the families of Britain’s war dead. Strauss-Kahn, who was the Socialist Party’s leading candidate for the French 2012 presidential election, was arrested by New York police in mid-May on charges of attempting to rape a hotel maid.

trial of former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens ended in a mistrial in the second day of witness testimony after the prosecution showed the jury evidence in violation of a court order. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said that he’s considering barring further prosecution of Clemens on double-jeopardy grounds. He set a hearing for Sept. 2 on whether to let the case proceed. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is accused of lying to Congress about his use of steroids. Prosecutors said that Andy Pettitte, a former teammate, would testify about how Clemens told him in 1999 or 2000 that he had used HGH. Clemens told Congress that Pettitte misheard the conversation. were leaping into the unknown. What character traits do you feel you share with Hermione?

Not so much now, but I guess an earnestness, eager to please and do the right thing. Terrified of ever getting into trouble. Could you see yourself singing on Broadway like your co-star Daniel Radcliffe?

Dan is so ballsy. That kid, amazing. I would love to do something on Broadway. I think I need to pluck up more courage, but I love to sing. Now that this series has ended, do you have a favorite out of the lot?

The last two, for me, really stand apart from all of the rest. The quality is amazing.

How is fame treating you these days?

It became easier to handle once I accepted it. I feel fortunate in that I’ve never really known what it’s like to have total freedom and anonymity. It’s not as though I had it and then all of a sudden it got taken away from me. It’s something that I grew up knowing. The characters in “Harry Potter” endure so many tests of their bravery. Have you had an experience like that in your own life?

rom the age of 9, British actress Emma Watson has lived and breathed “Harry Potter” — having starred in all eight of the films as Potter’s close friend, the bookish Muggle-born Hermione Granger. While Watson gave a tearful speech at the final film’s premiere in London last week, as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” gets released, the actress is also eagerly awaiting her post-Potter life — even if she and Hermione have basically become the same person.

Grade: “Winnie the Pooh” is truly refreshing in a summer dominated by overdone, overhyped, special-effects-mangled blockbusters. There’s a difference between something classic and just another remake. This “Pooh” is the pitch-perfect example of a new classic. It’s pure, yet entertaining for any age. It’s every bit as traditional and innocent as the “Winnie the Pooh” cartoons and books you knew as a kid. At a little over an hour, this is the perfect film to take your favorite little squirt and initiate a new generation.

What’s the next ‘Harry Potter’? Now that he’s put down his wand, who will inherit the fans? ‘Twilight’ is almost done, so what’s next? ‘The Hunger Games’

The movies: The first is filming now. Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar nominee, will play our heroine, Katniss Everdeen, while Gary Ross, of “Seabiscuit,â€? directs. Chances of taking o: High. Collins’ themes (reality TV, kids at war) are relevant to adults, and the kids will enjoy the world created. Release date: March 23, 2012

Premise: Every year, one boy and one girl must fight to the death in a televised event, brought to you by the Capitol, the evil government in charge of the land of Panem (formerly known as North America, preapocalypse). Suzanne Collins’ young adult best-seller, from the same publisher as “Potter, is the first in a trilogy.

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Premise: Inspired by “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the plot finds our heroine cast out by a wicked witch and ordered to die at the hands of a hunter. It’s the first of a planned series.

The movies: “Twilight star Kristen Stewart leaves one franchise for another, playing a tough version of Snow White. But we’re more into the dwarves: Eddie Izzard and Bob Hoskins are among the seven.

Chances of taking o: Fair. We love the cast, and it opens a few months before another Snow White project (starring Julia Roberts), but do young audiences care about classic fairy tales? Ask the producers of the box-office bomb “Red Riding Hood.â€? Release date: June 1, 2012

The Creator of the Secret Garden Party UK invites you to...

‘The Hobbit’ Premise: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1937, this prequel to “Lord of the Ringsâ€? finds a young Bilbo Baggins battling orcs and spiders to save a kingdom. He also encounters some precious old friends. The movies: Director Peter Jackson is back. Ian McKellan is back. Orlando Bloom is back. Gollum is back. This is (a reported) $500 million well spent. There’ll be two films: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journeyâ€? and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.â€? Chances of taking o: The Blood of Numenor is all but spent. But these movies will be massive successes. Release dates: “An Unexpected Journeyâ€?: Dec. 14, 2012; “There and Back Againâ€?: Dec. 13, 2013.

COURTESY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

“Percy might be a sleeper hit.

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Premise: A kid wakes up one morning, in modern day North America, and discovers his dad is the Greek god Poseidon — and mythological creatures are on the attack. Rick Riordan’s series, started in 2005, has five books so far. The movies: The first — subtitled “The Lightning Thief and directed by “Potter vet Chris Columbus — was

released last year. The second — subtitled “The Sea of Monstersâ€? — sends our hero on a nautical mission and is in the planning stages. Chances of taking o: Define “taking off.â€? Despite a lack of buzz, the first film made more than $200 million worldwide. Last month, the studio locked down star Logan Lerman and hired a director for part two. Release date: Not announced yet.

Mariinsky Ballet in NYC The famed Russian group wow in their first New York appearance in a decade Catch them Saturday

Tolstoy’s novel, a littleknown composer (Rodion Shchedrin), a hot Russian choreographer (Alexei Ratmansky, who is currently artist in residence at the American Ballet Theatre and a former director of the Bolshoi Ballet) and some of the world’s loveliest dancers in a 250-yearold dance troupe made the

Mariinsky Ballet’s new “Anna Karenina” a compelling evening of dance. Anna, played Monday by Diana Vishneva, showed off her limpid technique; all dancers on stage had remarkable, fleet feet, with prominent arches. Many of them are very tall and all are a pleasure to watch. And although “Anna Karenina” was only onstage for three nights during the famed group’s brief engagement, you can still catch the Mariinsky Ballet

I BRIBE MY KIDS. AND IT WORKS Opinion

ALEX MCCORD OF “THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK CITY”

Brooklyn’s Alex McCord, one of the “Real Housewives of New York City,” returns with her column for Metro. This week, she talks child-rearing.

I

said I would never bribe my kids. That was before I had any. I’m amazed at the things we do as parents that we swore we’d never, ever do. And, well, welcome to reality. Last summer, the family and I spent a weekend at a seaside boutique hotel. We played on the beach and enjoyed the rooftop pool with the DJ, cabanas with models moonlighting as waiters — you get the idea. Simon and I lounged, worked and read while the boys swam and worked on their tans. At one point, our oldest boy came back giggling with $15 in singles and a $5 bill. Huh? Was he picking pockets? Panhandling? Upon interrogation, we learned he walked amongst the 20-somethings near the pool, and offered to bring the waiter to them for a dollar. He had many takers, plus a woman who offered him $5 to pelt her boyfriend with a water blaster. The

satisfied look on his face when he came back with the money got me thinking. Fast-forward to the present — our 7and 5-year-old boys clean their rooms once a week, try most new foods offered (though often with much complaining) and turn the TV off when it’s time. Why? Simply put, we pay them. They are each given an allowance worth half their ages. They also have a chore chart hanging outside their rooms, and every missed chore equals 50 cents off. We had a few weeks where they only made a dollar, or owed us money — though we gave them extra job options so they could correct the deficit. They may not care about behaving simply because it’s the right thing to do, but they do care about money. And we’re getting better behavior as a result. One kid insists that handwriting is so 20th century and wants to type his homework. Rather than argue that point daily, I’ve added writing practice to the chore chart. I hope I’m teaching them responsibility and the value of money. I know I’m getting them to do more work with fewer arguments — and frankly, for now that’s enough. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. Opposing viewpoints are welcome.

Miranda Kerr named her and Orlando Bloom’s son in part after a deceased ex-boyfriend, she tells the Daily Telegraph. One of baby Flynn’s middle names, Christopher, was chosen in honor of Kerr’s first boyfriend, Christopher Middlebrook, who died in a car accident as a teenager. “Chris and I had been dating for two years,” she says. “After he died, I wrote him a letter that said I hoped to name my first child after him in some way. Enough of the class warfare RE: “EVIL TAXES, EVIL COMMUNISTS”: “Idle owner-

ship” is a loaded term from the class warfare handbook. It assumes that anyone with assets got it at the expense of someone else or inherited it. I assure you, with the exception of trust funds, there is nothing idle about ownership — nest eggs come from years and years of working and saving and doing without. Further, people will have little motivation to work hard, save and accumulate assets if the fruits of their efforts will be taxed away.

RE: “OBAMA, KING OF FUNDRAISING”: Obama

raised $86 million in just three months for ... yep, you guessed it, himself. If just half the time and effort politicians put into raising money for their reelection campaigns was instead purposed toward fixing the economy, perhaps then we never would have gotten to the low point we are at now. MLB SECOND HALF PREVIEW

TALE OF TWO BOROUGHS While Bronx Bombers fight for playoffs, story in Queens is weighing blockbuster trades Yanks hope Colon, Garcia can continue winning ways Will Mets trade Beltran or Reyes?

YANKEES If you went to Vegas and wagered a small amount that the Yankees would win with a back end of the rotation featuring Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon, here’s hoping you cashed in significantly. Believe it or not, the Yankees went into this season as “underdogs,” even with a $200 million payroll, because they lost out on Cliff Lee and settled for two pitchers who hadn’t done much recently. If there’s any reason that can explain the Yankees taking the AL’s second-best record into the All-Star break it is the performances of those veterans. Garcia and Colon have combined for 13 victories, doing so with different methods. Garcia has succeeded with a slow fastball and an array of offspeed pitches. Colon recently returned from a ham-

string injury and for most of his 12 starts pumped in one fastball after another with precision. That was not evident last week against Tampa Bay, so it is natural to wonder if that will happen more often. If the Yankees need him, Ivan Nova and his curveball are in the minors and they could always make a lowlevel trade, but the Yankees are gambling on two veterans and hoping it won’t have to come to that.

METS The first 91 games of the New York Mets’ season was just a prologue. Future chapters will be authored by Sandy Alderson. The Mets begin a sevengame homestand today and a fuller image of where they stand may develop. The Mets enter the second half 7.5 games out of the wild card. The seven games in seven days could have a playoff feel. But while the onfield

Bartolo Colon pitched to a 3.20 ERA in the first half.

Carlos Beltran could be traded before July 31.

games are important, what will be more significant is the course of action off the field. It has long been accepted this team would be broken up as Alderson and his lieutenants rebuild a lacking farm system. With Francisco Rodriguez traded, the next long rumored candidate to leave is free-agentto-be Carlos Beltran. Beltran and injured shortstop Jose Reyes traveled with the San Francisco contingent to the All-Star Game prompting speculation the Giants used the flight to sell Beltran on the reigning champions. Beltran acknowledged during a press conference last Monday he had spoken with Mets management about his future. Beltran could fetch a decent return from a playoff contender — there has been speculation that the Yankees and Boston are also interested in the switch hitter — and it certainly feels like he is in the final days of his tenure with the Mets. The multimillion-dollar question is whether Alderson will be able to re-sign freeagent-to-be Reyes. DENIS GORMAN

MICHAEL VICK: THE GREATEST QB EVER? Fantasy sports

ADAM LEVITAN

A step ahead

Michael Vick will never be compared with Joe Montana or Peyton Manning in real football. But he can definitely be in the conversation with Marshall Faulk and LaDainian Tomlinson when we’re talking fantasy.

Before last season, Vick hadn’t started a game since 2006. It’s very possible that he can get even more explosive and improve even more on his passing touch in 2011.

ALEVITAN@METRO.US

In 2006, Tomlinson set the standard for fantasy seasons by scoring 31 touchdowns and piling up 2,323 total yards. Thanks to Vick’s unique talents, he can top that.

Projecting numbers Vick started 12 games last season. If we project those stats over 16 games, he would have thrown for 4,024 yards, ran for 901 and racked up 40 total touchdowns. That obliterates Tomlinson’s 2006 campaign.

Top MLB pickups

Bobby Parnell RP, Mets With Francisco Rodriguez now splitting time as closer in Milwaukee with John Axford, Parnell will now be the favorite to get most of the saves in New York.

Michael Vick’s 2010 season was among the most dominant in fantasy history.

Cory Luebke SP, Padres Clayton Richard (shoulder injury) is shelved, locking Luebke into the rotation. He has a 64/18 K/BB ratio and a 2.57 ERA in 32 games (3 GS) this season.

Luke Gregerson RP, Padres Heath Bell will likely be traded before the July 31 deadline. Mike Adams is in the mix for saves, but Gregerson is the long-term closing option.

NFL news

No Moreno? Coach John Fox said that running back will be the Broncos’ No. 1 priority in free agency. It’s surprising — yet obvious — that the team isn’t sold on Knowshon Moreno as a workhorse back. He has averaged just 14.8 carries per game in his first two seasons and missed three games in 2010 with a hamstring injury. Downgrade Moreno across the board.

The injury question

The reckless running style that makes Vick so good in fantasy is also his biggest drawback. But injury prone? Vick missed just two games over his final three seasons with the Falcons and the lack of a flak jacket caused last year’s injury. He received that tag almost exclusively because of the 2003 season in which he broke his leg — the only season he missed significant playing time due to injury. In the middle of the first round, Vick’s massive upside is certainly worth taking the risk to draft if you are making quarterback a priority.

ONE MORE FOR US

Bjorn leader at Open

Wambach, who threatens to simply shrug off Japan’s back-line defenders. Wambach has goals in each of the last three games — the last two of which were game winners. The Americans will also return defender Rachel Buehler, who did not play in the semifinal win over France due to receiving a straight red card against Brazil. She figures to return to the starting lineup, but it was the bench that gave the U.S. a spark against France. Forward Alex Morgan, 22, netted the third goal of the game coming in as a reserve. It was her first career World Cup goal.

Thomas Bjorn only qualified for the British Open when other players withdrew because of injuries. Tom Lewis is a 20year-old amateur who earned his ticket to Royal St. George’s by winning a qualifier. But as Thursday ended there they were, atop the leaderboard with twin 5-under 65s. Miguel Angel Jimenez, Lucas Glover and Webb Simpson finished Thursday tied for second-best, with 4-under 66. Lewis played his round with five-time British Open champion Tom Watson — the source of his first name. METRO

Americans seeming more and more like a team of destiny But Sunday’s World Cup final won’t be easy The U.S. women’s national soccer team is the unquestioned favorite going into Sunday’s World Cup final. But the showdown with Japan is anything but a coronation. As destined as the Americans seem to take their first crown since that famous 1999 run, Japan is an impressive obstacle. The Japanese are playing with purpose — they know they embody the hopes of their earthquakeravaged homeland. The Americans’ big advantage is their strength and size,
