Amanda Knox is speaking out about another case she says was improperly handled. In an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, Knox took issue with the sentencing of Michelle Carter, another woman whose conviction has been on headlines plastered on national news sites. Carter is the Massachusetts woman who was sentenced to 2.5 years in jail on involuntary manslaughter charges for encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, to commit suicide. metro.us

PENCE DENIES EYEING SHKRELI SENTENCE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID TURNS ON ANTICS

1

Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday denied that he is preparing for a presidential election run in 2020, saying the suggestion is “disgraceful and offensive.” Pence was responding to a New York Times report that some Republicans were moving to form a “shadow campaign” as though President Donald Trump were not involved. It said multiple advisers to Pence “have already

intimated to party donors that he would plan to run if Mr. Trump did not.” The report said Pence had not only kept a full political calendar but also had created his own independent power base, including a political fund-raising group called the “Great America Committee.”

Former drug company executive Martin Shkreli could spend years in prison for Friday’s investor fraud conviction if the judge focuses on the intended impact of his crime and his “Pharma Bro” social media antics, according to legal experts. Shkreli, widely criticized after he acquired rights to an infection treatment and then raised prices 5,000 percent in 2015, hopes to avoid prison because of an un-

usual twist to his case: defrauded investors suffered no loss from his crime. That could favor Shkreli, because investor harm is the main factor in determining a sentence for securities fraud. However, a law enforcement source said prosecutors will challenge Shkreli’s underlying assumption of how to calculate the investor losses.

CABLE FIRMS EMBRACE FORMER FOE NETFLIX

4

A growing number of U.S. cable operators are forming alliances with Netflix Inc NFLX.O, a shift that is helping the streaming pioneer add customers as its largest single market matures. No. 3 distributor Charter Communications Inc CHTR.O is expected to make Netflix available through its set-top boxes, joining more than a dozen top U.S. pay television operators adopting a

model first rolled out in Europe. Some U.S. providers could start selling the streaming service as part of their Internet and video packages. Altice NV ATCA.AS is trying that approach in France, and the company aims to extend the deal to the United States, two sources with knowledge of the matter said during the past three weeks. They requested anonymity because the discussions are private.

TOXIC WASTE FROM POT FARMS ALARMS EXPERTS

5

Pollution from illegal marijuana farms deep in California’s national forests is far worse than previously thought, and has turned thousands of acres into waste dumps so toxic that simply touching plants has landed law enforcement officers in the hospital. The volume of banned or restricted pesticides and illegally applied fertilizers in the woods dwarfs estimates by the U.S. Forest Service in 2014, when a top en-

forcement official testified that the pollution was threatening forest land in California and other states. California accounts for more than 90 percent of illegal U.S. marijuana farming, with much of it exported to other states from thousands of sites hidden deep inside forested federal land, and more on private property, law enforcement officials said. Growers use fertilizers and pesticides long restricted or banned in the United States.

As legal weed gains traction, doctors stay informed through new cannabis curriculum The Massachusetts Medical Society recently launched a “cannabis curriculum to inform healthcare providers on everything they need to know about weed.

KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota

Now that the recreational marijuana law has finally been signed by Gov. Charlie Baker and the state is shaping its Cannabis Ad-

visory Board, the dream of legal weed is here to stay in Massachusetts. Though medical marijuana has been legal here since 2012, the addition of legal recreational marijuana still affects the medical world, experts say. That’s why the Massa-

chusetts Medical Society has officially launched a Comprehensive Cannabis Curriculum series to help doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers get educated about the intricacies of weed. The recently launched curriculum provides in-

formation on the endocannabinoid system (the group of cannabinoid receptors in the brain) as well as dosing and administration information and how cannabis interacts with and affects other medications and drugs. “With legalization of both medical marijuana and recreational marijuana growing in states across the U.S., it is imperative that physicians be prepared to answer questions about marijuana use and to counsel their patients about any potential impact of cannabis,â€? said Dr. Henry L. Dorkin, president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, in a statement. The curriculum was developed with the aid of TheAnswerPage.com, a continuing medical education website that provides peer-reviewed information on a variety of fields of medicine. TheAnswerPage is based in Massachusetts and began in 1998, founded by two pain specialists, Dr. Stephen B. Corn and Dr. Meredith FisherCorn. Fisher-Corn, who is also editor-in-chief of the site, explained that when medical marijuana was legalized in 2012, the couple’s 10-year-old son began asking them questions about cannabis that neither of them could answer. “We were talking about medical cannabis, and despite the fact that we’re both Harvard-trained physicians, we knew nothing about medical cannabis or the endocannabinoid system,â€? she said. “The information that one would find on the internet either said that marijuana was the best thing or marijuana was the worst thing;

There was no unbiased credible information out there. Prior to that legalization, TheAnswerPage provided information on opioid prescribing and risk management, pain and management of care and so on. The founders knew it was important to explore marijuana as more patients would be using it.

“... it is imperative that physicians be prepared to answer questions about marijuana use and to counsel their patients about any potential impact of cannabis. Dr. Henry L. Dorkin

The Massachusetts Medical Society does not endorse the use of medical marijuana, but by adopting this curriculum, Fisher-Corn said, the society is acknowledging how important it is that doctors be informed about cannabis and ready to answer questions their patients have — especially with the addition of legal recreational marijuana. The course also details the therapeutic use of cannabis in different diseases from cancer to Parkinson’s to HIV/AIDS as well as the legal issues of marijuana use.

Aaron Carter comes out

Serena Williams’ cute baby shower This is the cutest.

Serena Williams had a cute lil’ 1950s-themed baby shower, and everyone was there! I mean, you weren’t there. I wasn’t there. But the likes of Ciara (local woman who went tobogganing with her infant) and Lala Anthony (who looks so good, even her estranged husband can’t deal with it) were there. Oh, and Eva Longoria, Kelly Rowland and, of course, Venus Williams. Celebrities truly have the most random friendships. Williams and her fiance, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, are expecting some time in the fall. Though they’ve yet to find out the sex of the

baby, they’re leaning toward the lady sort. “She won the Australian Open while pregnant,” Ohanian explained to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” “She remarked that she feels it has to be a girl because everything that little baby went through and handled like a champ … only a woman could be strong enough to take on.” True! So yeah, these two are still in the running for being my new favorite couple. I mean, honestly, they deserve it.

Hilary Duff slams body shamers, or whatever Someone has been bullying Hilary Duff or something. Because she’s taken to her Instagram to shut down body shamers, but it’s like, who even is saying anything about her anyway? “I am posting this on behalf of young girls, women and mothers of all ages,” she started. “I’m enjoying a vacation with my son after a long season of shooting and being away from him for weeks at a time over

those months. Since websites and magazines love to share ‘celeb flaws’ — well I have them! My body has given me the greatest gift of my life: Luca, 5 years ago. I’m turning 30 in September, and my body is healthy and gets me where I need to go,” she wrote. Anyway, bodyshaming is always bad, and my opinion is pretty unimportant. That being said, A) Duff looks great, and B) people who spend their free time

Over the weekend, Aaron Carter took to Twitter to share that he’s attracted to both men and women. His poison? A very long screenshot from his Notes app, which I, on principle, hate. "There's something I'd like to say that I feel is important for myself and my identity that has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life," he started. “I grew up in this entertainment industry at a very young age, and when I was around 13 years old, I started to find boys and girls attractive. There were years that went by that I thought about it, but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old,

after a few relationships with girls, I had an experience with a male that I had an attraction to, who I also worked with and grew up with.” Bravo to Carter for feeling like he could finally come out as bisexual. Even if it is for the attention — it’s still mad brave, yo. Good for you, dude.

Blac Chyna wants to be a rapper now

Blac Chyna would like to be a rapper now, in the vein of Nicki Minaj. Because, of course! TMZ reports that being in music videos with Minaj is no longer enough for Chyna. And “several record labels” are just clamoring to make it happen. Apparently, she’s already in the studio recording what TMZ calls “poetry music,” among other things. For those of you wondering what a “poetry music is,” same. Chyna was part of a Yo Gotti music video shoot in Miami with Minaj a couple of

weeks ago and that was enough to fuel this extremely unnecessary fire. A source tells the site that the woman formerly engaged, or something, to Rob Kardashian has lined up several meetings with record labels in Los Angeles, and she’s already met with some people at Capitol Records. Neat-o! This is certainly just another one of those things that we don’t need. But unfortunately, it looks like Chyna is going to just be the unwanted gift that keeps giving.

Girl, I guess.

Climate-change docs to see after ‘An Inconvenient Sequel’

Al Gore is back, reminding us not to destroy the world. But these films may be better than his latest. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

‘Chasing Ice’ and ‘Chasing Coral’ The slow, steady, hopefully not inevitable erosion of the planet may be terrifying, but it’s not particularly cinematic. Any filmmaker hoping to make a movie about climate change has to ask himself: How do I show this? Director Jeff Orlowski has now made two films showing global warming as it happens, both with the word “Chasing in the title. In 2012’s “Chasing Ice, he uses cutting-edge cameras to show the melting of glaciers in action. If that’s

not enough to scare the bejesus out of you, he returned with “Chasing Coral, in which other eggheads place cameras under the sea, inside the Great Barrier Reef. They were there to bear witness to “coral bleaching, in which climate change robs corals of their color and their life. Both now stream on Netflix

‘Time to Choose’ “Chasing Ice and “Chasing Coral use images to show the proof of climate change; “Time to Choose goes one step further. It’s the most beautifully photographed film on the subject — a hypnotic, film-length montage reminiscent of movies like “Koyaanisqatsi. That said, it’s still heavy on intel. It’s

from filmmaker Charles Ferguson, whose docs (“No End in Sight, “Inside Job) are exhaustively researched, very much documentaries as journalism. Here, he thinks as much about image as content. That’s not all: “Time to Choose is one of the few optimistic films in the genre. It begins with the usual doomsday

‘Before the Flood’ We get it: Listening to brainiacs can make your eyes roll over. Maybe you want your blood-freezing data delivered by a hot celebrity. Failing that, maybe you want said hot celebrity to stand next to brainiacs, nodding as they vomit up factoids. Witness Leonardo DiCaprio, in his second climatechange doc, do just that in this Hail May pass of a doc, which tries to get people who loved “The Revenant to care about the destruction that’s only started to hit the planet in earnest. It’s not much of a climate-change doc, but it’s still superior to “An Inconvenient Sequel. Which you should still see. Because this stuff is important. Available on Amazon Video (for a fee)

‘Merchants of Doubt’ Technically this isn’t a doc about global warming. It’s about hucksters, con artists, bullies. The ones it shows just happen to be the grifters swindling the public into believing climate change isn’t legit. It delves into the history of lying on a global scale, comparing the climate change denial wave to the monsters who once claimed cigarettes weren’t harmful to their health. “Merchants winds up getting at something deeper about deception: Its villains thrill at being contrarians, at believing that they’re the smartest people in the room. They just do that by taking a position that everyone

Here’s where Amy Schumer is filming her new comedy in Boston The comedian and actress is in town for her flick “I Feel Pretty.” MATT JUUL @MetroBOS

letters@metro.us

If you’re taking a stroll around Boston’s South End today, you just might run into Amy Schumer — and a sizable movie production crew. The comedian and actress is heading to the Hub this week to film scenes for her upcoming comedy “I Feel Pretty.” According to a flyer recently sent out to residents, shooting for the movie will take over Tremont Street between Union Park and West Brookline Street on Monday. Beginning at midnight, the area will be cleared so production vehicles can find parking, while filming is scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. A cater-

ing truck will be parked at St. John’s Church on Union Park Street as well. Although organizers haven’t revealed the exact locations, scenes will be shot at a pair of restaurants in the area. The production will also return

to Boston on Aug. 18 to film additional scenes at a store located on Union Park Street. Written and directed by “How to Be Single” scribes Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, “I Feel Pretty” reportedly re-

volves around a woman who starts acting extremely confident in herself after suffering a serious head injury. Model Emily Ratajkowski and actress Michelle Williams, who recently earned an Oscar nod for her work in the Bay State-set drama “Manchester by the Sea,” will join Schumer in the flick, which is eying a summer 2018 release date. The “Trainwreck” star’s latest comedy isn’t the only big movie setting up shop in Boston this summer. Production for the upcoming superhero blockbuster “X-Men: The New Mutants” brought “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams and “Stranger Things” actor Charlie Heaton to town in July. It sounds like Arya Stark and Jonathan Byers had a enjoyable time in the city, as they were spotted sharing a meal with a few other friends in the North End.

If you thought your days of bullying ended on the playground, you’re in for a rude awakening. In fact, “one of the toughest dilemmas facing workers today is office bullying, especially when it’s coming from their boss, says career and workplace advisor, Tracey C. Jones. But that doesn’t mean you should simply grin and bear it for the sake of your job. There are plenty of ways to handle the situation without having to hand in a letter of resignation. We spoke with Jones to find out how: Clarify the behavior Before you start pointing fingers, it’s important that you ask yourself: Am I actually being bullied, or is my boss just being tough? “There’s a big difference, says Jones. “A tough boss is going to give you constructive criticism, but a bullying boss is going to give you destructive criticism. If your boss scolds you when you turn in low quality work, he’s simply pushing you to perform your best, she explains. But if he humiliates you in public, calls you demeaning names when you make a mistake, or attempts to intimidate

you by threatening to get rid of you, that’s when you’ve officially entered bullying territory. “Bullies are prone to public displays of anger, explains the expert. “They’ll attack you on a personal level rather than criticize your work. Once that happens, it’s time to put your foot down and do something about it. Confront the bully Nobody wants to face the bully head on, says Jones, but it’s honestly the best thing you can do. Plus, “sooner or later you’re going to have to be at the same table with the bully. It looks much better if you can tell whoever is involved. “I already spoke with him, we discussed the issues, and here are my notes from our conversation. It makes you look professional, and shows that you made the effort to resolve things, rather than simply sulking or complaining to fellow coworkers, she explains. “It just makes you look so much more credible. Her method for going about it strategically: Write down what you’re going to say ahead of time, and think of a way to make it clear that you’re trying to help them. “Use truth and love, says Jones. “Say it in a way that encourages, not decimates them. Try

something along the lines of: “There’s no doubt that you know how to run this company and I understand that you have a lot on your plate, but at times you speak to me in a way that doesn’t help my productivity. At the end of the day, you don’t want to attack him as a person; you just want to just resolve the issue. Go higher up A bully will respond to your confrontation in one of two ways, says Jones. “He’ll either be woefully ignorant, or willfully ignorant. In the first scenario, he’s going to apologize, thank you for telling him, and then work on fixing his behavior. “But the willfully ignorant boss is going to be glad that he pushed your buttons and ostracized you, says Jones. “He wants to devalue you and let you know you’re not the boss. If that’s the case, it’s time to go higher up on the management chain, says the expert. HR should be the first stop, and if that doesn’t resolve it, then comes the CEO. Upper management will say one of two things: “Holy cow I can’t believe it — I’m going to take care of it, or what do you want me to do about it? If the response is the latter, “that’s when you should start polishing up that resume and looking for outside work.

Moncrief could be the lucky pick Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Donte Moncrief was one of the biggest busts of 2016, producing nowhere near his fourthround ADP. He averaged a pathetic 2.5 yards after the catch, a far departure from the explosiveness he flashed in 2015. However, Moncrief was injured or at less than 100 percent for a majority of the season last year, and now that he is fully healthy he is making a huge impact at training camp. T.Y. Hilton is still the WR1 in Indianapolis and is almost guaranteed to have more total yards than Moncrief, but Moncrief has the red zone upside that Hilton simply doesn’t. The 6-foot-2

Mike Gillislee is the heirapparent to the LeGarrette Blount role for the New England Patriots — a role that produced 18 rushing touchdowns in 2016. Tom Brady may not be able to sling it around like the days of yore, but there is nobody in the NFL who manages a game better. That will benefit Gillislee all season, as we can expect the Patriots to have a lead in many, if not most games. Gillislee produced nine total touchdowns as the backup to LeSean McCoy with the Buffalo Bills last year and as the lead back in one of the NFL’s top offenses, his value should blow away his current ADP (RB29, 72 overall).

inch, 220-pound wideout is also only 23, meaning he has added upside in dynasty and keeper formats.

Edelman no longer the man in New England The days of Julian Edelman as a surefire lock for targets are over. Head coach Bill Belichick and Brady have revamped their offense and it appears that Edelman may be the one whose production suffers from all of the new weapons. While the slot receiver Edelman did set a career high in targets last year, it was to be expected with a full 16 games under his belt for once. He converted just 11.1 percent of his targets inside the 10-yard line last year, and with a healthy Rob Gronkowski, New Orleans Saints import Brandin Cooks, former Colt Dwayne Allen and the pass-catching duo of Gillislee and Rex Burkhead in the backfield, Edelman simply won’t provide the return you seek for his

price (fifth-round ADP).

Fantasy draft sleepers of the week Kelvin Benjamin By all accounts, Benjamin is back in football shape, both in weight and conditioning. If he can stay healthy, we could see the 2014 Benjamin once again (1,008 yards and nine touchdowns).

DeVante Parker The 2015 first-round pick has yet to fully break out, but as the only big touchdown threat in the Dolphins passing game, he has enough upside to merit a speculative pick in Round 8 or later.

Tyrod Taylor On a per-game basis, Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been a top-10 quarterback by nearly every metric in the last two years. He can easily provide that value and more, a steal given his current 13thround ADP.

Who could take down the Pats? A look at the competition for the Pats in the AFC in 2017 MATTHEW BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

For a decade at the start of the NFL season, you could pencil in the Patriots and Colts as having the top two records in the AFC. That gave way to the Patriots and Broncos in recent years. Last season though, there never really emerged one team in the AFC that could challenge the Pats. The Ravens, who typically give the Pats fits, were mediocre at 8-8. The Broncos couldn’t figure out their quarterback situation post-Peyton Manning and missed the playoffs at 9-7. The Chiefs were paper tigers, the Bengals had a considerable dropoff, and the Colts were a joke. This season the Patriots are expected to coast to another Super Bowl berth where they’ll finally meet one of the NFC’s big boys, but could a team from the AFC upset the apple cart? Let’s take a look at the most likely candidates to swipe the Lamar

back Derek Carr broke his leg in the second to last game of the season and the Raiders wound up falling to Houston in the wild card round. backfield, but it’s unclear if the rusty Lynch will still be in Beast Mode at 31-years-old. Khalil Mack is a dominant defensive end and he recently said he’s focused on getting 30 sacks this season, but Oakland’s overall defense still might not be ready for primetime. The Raiders allowed 24.1 points per game last season, 20th in the NFL (Patriots were No. 1 by the way – giving up just 15.6 ppg). If this is Tom Brady’s final season in a Patriots uniform (entirely possible even if they win the Super Bowl), wouldn’t it be poetic if the Pats and Raiders met in the playoffs 16 years after the Snow Bowl game that got the Pats dynasty started in the first place?

BRONCOS Paxton Lynch will be the Denver starter at QB in Year 2, but he’s looked shaky in training camp so far and it’s no sure bet he’ll be even a top 20 QB in the NFL this season. That said, Peyton Manning was brutal for the Broncos two years ago and he led them past the Pats and onto a Super Bowl win. Von

Miller and his giant legs are ready to wreak havoc on the AFC once again. That defense will always pose problems for Tom Brady and Co., and the Pats will be lucky if they can escape Mile High on Nov. 12 with a victory.

STEELERS The Steelers were pummeled by the Patriots in the AFC Championship game this past January 36-17, and the whooping almost forced Ben Roethlisberger to retire. With Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, the Steelers will always pose a threat — but you could easily make the case that the Patriots’ roster improved more than the Steelers’ roster did. Wide receiver Martavis Bryant will be back for Pittsburgh this season but it’s unlikely he’ll be the one that propels the Steelers past the Pats.

TEXANS The Texans laid the blueprint for how to stop the Pats in that divisional round game this past January, something that Atlanta used to perfection in the first half of the Super Bowl. JJ

Watt returns from injury to Houston, but their QB issues remain. Deshaun Watson may one day be an elite talent, but it’s unlikely a rookie QB takes down a Bill Belichick defense in Year 1.

OTHERS Chiefs: Like the Philadelphia Eagles were under Andy Reid last decade, the Chiefs always feel like also-rans. Titans: Marcus Mariota seems ready to make the leap, but the Titans are a franchise that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2003. It’s likely they take stepping stones on their way to AFC Elite status. Ravens: The Ravens are the Patriots’ AFC kryptonite but with Pats killer Joe Flacco banged up, who knows where Baltimore winds up. The Ravens could go 3-13 just as easily as they could go 13-3. Dolphins: Adam Gase might be the best nonBelichick coach the AFC East has seen since Marv Levy (yup, the other options are that bad). That said, Ryan Tannehill is injured and the defense is suspect.
