DA nabs shippers avoiding sanctions GETTY IMAGES

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. announced yesterday a 317count indictment of 11 corporations and five individuals for allegedly conspiring with the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines to evade economic sanctions. The DA alleges that the

accused created false companies and aliases in order to process $60 million through New York City banks. The United States banned transactions with IRISL because of its links to military proliferation, including the transport of weapons of mass destruc-

tion to terrorists like Hezbollah. “New York remains the No. 1 target of terrorist organizations around the world, and today’s joint action will make it more difficult for Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism,” said Vance. METRO/EAE

‘Games’ hold back gay marriage vote Same-sex marriage vote now tied up in property tax cap and rent regulation debate Equality advocates say: Enough playing politics MARIO TAMA/GETTY IMAGES

The fight for marriage equality is now embroiled in a bitter battle between upstate and downstate politics. Gay marriage is stalled as the state Senate tries to hash out an agreement on a property tax cap, which upstate Republicans demand, and rent regulation, which New York City Democrats are adamant about extending and expanding. “There are basically three main pieces: Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo wants gay marriage, [Assembly] Speaker [Sheldon] Silver wants rent regulation and the Republicans want a property tax cap,” said one source from the Senate floor. “They’re unrelated, but negotiated simultaneously.” No party wants to appear weak and give too many concessions, he said, and warned that no one would be happy with the results. “They’re all bargaining chips,” said another source, close to a Democratic senator. “If the Republicans give on one, they may not give on another.” But gay marriage advocates say it’s time to stop playing politics. “What is a game to certain politicians is a real experience of inequality in our community,” said Jake Goodman, 32, of Queer Rising, an advocacy group. “I think the Senate wants to

backed same-sex marriage legislation. Cuomo might use his power to transfer the authority on rent regulations from Albany to the New York City Council, which usually favors tenants, according to the New York Post. With rent regulation out of the game, it might clear the way for gay mar-

F, G station shut down for repairs Yesterday, the MTA shuttered the Smith-Ninth Street F, G station and won’t reopen it until at least March 2012. The station will be closed for nine months of rehabilitation. Neighborhood residents face longer commutes while some shopkeepers are bracing for months of depleted foot traffic. “We’re going to have to weather the storm, said Hector Carino, 27, manager of F Line Bagels on Ninth Street. “Hopefully, our loyal customers will walk the few extra blocks. He estimates that 70 to 80 percent of his business comes from commuters. Pingpong to battle cancer 26-year-old Manhattan artist diagnosed with cancer Like many, he doesn’t have health insurance Friends helping him pay the bills

Joe Madeo, at far right, stands with friends Levi Okunov and Aaron Genuth.

METRO

GIVING Welcome back to Metro Giving! Every other Tuesday, Metro writes about a New Yorker who is giving back.

What would you do if your friend was diagnosed with cancer? What would you do if he didn’t have health insurance to pay for treatment? Joseph Madeo, 26, started feeling sick two months ago. When he saw a doctor, he was given the devastating news: He has stagefour rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and fast-growing cancer most commonly found in children. Madeo lives in the Financial District, and he works a variety of jobs like a lot of New Yorkers: He used to barback at Don Hill’s. He’s an artist who collaborates with friends on fashion design and does freelance carpentry work. None of those gigs, however, provide health insurance. “Radiation treatment alone will cost $15,000,” said Madeo, who is currently getting chemotherapy. Madeo applied for Medicaid, but it’s still not con-

firmed if he’ll be accepted. And even if he does get it, there are many drugs that aren’t covered by insurance. He’s not working while he gets treatment and the bills are piling up. “Once I found out the extent of what Joe was dealing with, I knew he would need serious help financially,” said Aaron Genuth, 28, a friend of Madeo’s. “I know he’s very self-reliant and independent, and on top of everything he’s dealing with, it would be difficult for him to reach out to friends for help.” Genuth set up a fundraising party for Madeo, which will be held tonight at SPiN pingpong club. “Joe is a very well-liked guy,” said Genuth. “If people knew what was up they would be very eager to help.” CARLY BALDWIN

Photo shows last hours of ‘Jackass’ star Ryan Dunn In a photograph that Ryan Dunn shared with his Twitter followers around midnight yesterday, the “Jackass” co-star sits with two friends at Barnaby’s of America bar in his hometown of West Chester. Each holds a plastic cup. Dunn looks into his drink while the others take sips. In another photograph that would make the Internet rounds yesterday afternoon, a tow truck hauls a charred, mangled piece of Dunn’s 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 from a wooded area off of Route 322 near Pottstown Pike in West Goshen, Chester County. At 2:38 a.m., the vehicle jumped a guardrail at a fork in the

gation revealed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident.” The news release didn’t refer to alcohol involvement. Dunn was reportedly identified by his tattoos. Splintered trees, skid marks and fire residue marked the scene later in the day. Dunn, who appeared in MTV’s “Jackass” series and three namesake movies, was on NBC’s “Minute to Win It” show earlier this month. He turned 34 on June 9, and the first episode of G4’s “Proving Ground” show, which he hosted, debuted five days later. BRIAN HICKEY

The world of website names is about to be completely revolutionized. Third of Americans want to leave their job: Report About one-third of U.S. workers are considering leaving their jobs, with younger workers most likely to quit, according to human resources consultant, Mercer. A survey of 2,400 workers found 32 percent are “seriously considering” leaving his or her organization, up from 23 percent in 2005. Another 21 percent said they view their employers unfavorably and don’t feel engaged at work, though they don’t want to leave, according to a statement yesterday. Dissatisfaction is growing as workers think they are getting less out of their employment. Workers satisfied with base pay dropped to 53 percent from 58 percent in 2005, according to Mercer. Metro plays: Guess the villain!

I

s there an award’s show that is less popular than the poor Daytime Emmy Awards? At least the People’s Choice Awards gets famous people

to actually show up. Alas, Sunday’s show was just as poorly attended with Ellen DeGeneres, Regis Philbin and Dr. Phil McGraw as no-shows. Even Oprah Winfrey, who

became a billionaire thanks to daytime TV, and who was who honored with the first-ever “Chairman’s Crystal Pillar Award,” accepted via a

taped piece, not even satellite. Burn! Luckily, the soap stars still showed up in all their razzle and dazzle. Sadly, as I don’t have the pleasure of watching the

daily soaps, I’m not familiar with any of these stars but it was fun to guess if they play a villain or not based on their outfits alone. Care to take a shot?

Today, Eva Longoria is a frustrated viewer, Katy Perry is hopped up on antibiotics, Russell Crowe is displeased with the Daily Telegraph and Garry Shandling is showing off his travel savvy.

Doctors back in the U.K., where Winehouse recently paid a quick visit to rehab, are warning the singer that she has to finally clean up her act: “It’s the last-chance saloon for Amy,” a source says, according to Popeater. “Doctors have come down hard on her because of the severity of her situation. It’s a harsh reality, but she had to hear it.”

Lady Gaga back with boy toy

Jennifer Lopez is speaking out about the ongoing legal battle with ex-husband Ojani Noa over home videos from their marriage that he wants to release, a move Lopez has been fighting to block. “My first husband has tapes of us from our life. It’s horrible,” Lopez tells Culture magazine. “It’s horrible someone would try to sell personal things, but there’s nothing on it. There’s no sex tape.”

Just a month after announcing they’d broken up, Lady Gaga is reportedly back with on-again, offagain boyfriend Luc Carl, according to Us Weekly. “They had a little fight. I think the breakup lasted a week or two,” a source says. “They are totally back together now.” Gaga herself admits she may have stretched the truth in announcing her relationship’s demise. “I sometimes skirt questions about it — and maybe not honestly,” she tells the magazine.

Perfect hair for your big day

Big rollers will help you get ready for the big day.

Getting your hair to look its best on your wedding day is crucial. You want a style that’s chic and yet sturdy enough to withstand, say, an unexpected gust of wind or your first dance. Yes, it’s possible. Kate Middleton’s hair guru, Richard Ward, explains. ROMINA MCGUINNESS GETTY IMAGES/THINKSTOCK IMAGES

Try a demi chignon “The up-down demi chignon really is the best of both worlds,” Ward says. “Wear it all the way down and your hair will be all over your face. But wear it all the way up and you look too strict. [The demi chignon] is a timeless look that you can pull off at the ceremony and the party.”

Pick a good hair spray “On the day, allow for at least 90 minutes to get your hair done,” he says.

Keep curls lovely and loose “No matter how well curls have been done, they will eventually drop. For long-lasting, lovely, loose curls, use big rollers set into wet hair. This will last as your hair dries into the shape,” he explains. “The worst thing to do is use tight, heavy tongs or heating rollers, as neither will last.”

“An easy trap to fall into is to add on loads of hair spray to make sure that your hair stays in place, but what you should be doing is lightly applying a fine spray. Assign a friend to help you freshen your hair at night, whether it’s blow-drying or straightening.”

Not everyone has a tiara Hair accoutrements Ward loves are flowers. “They’re the ultimate accessory,” he assures. “Make a halo using lily of the valley buds. If you want to jazz this up at night, just swap the flowers for some diamante studs, as seen on Pippa [Middleton].”

Beauty pick Shedding a tear as you say your vows is finally possible with Kanebo’s 38˚C mascara. It can only be removed with hot water, making it perfect to help get through the day’s roller coaster of emotions. $25, www.neimanmarcus.com

A mighty Civil War collection DON POLLARD PHOTOGRAPH

Harold Holzer is a leading authority on the political culture of the Civil War In ‘Hearts Touched By Fire,’ he compiles essays about the era, from Ulysses S. Grant to obscure soldiers

Harold Holzer edited “Hearts Touched by Fire,” which offers accounts of the Civil War’s great battles.

For Civil War historians, the collection of firsthand accounts known as “Battles and Leaders of the Civil War” is “like having a dictionary on their desk,” according to Harold Holzer. “It’s one of these essential things that you have to consult anytime you’re writing about any battle or incident of the war.” On the 150th anniversary of the war’s outbreak, Holzer has edited “Hearts Touched By Fire,” a weighty new tome compiling roughly a quarter of those original

essays, granting regular readers access to this treasure trove. Compiled by the editors of The Century magazine beginning in 1883, the series gathered recollections by everyone from soldiers to Ulysses S. Grant. “This was the first draft of Civil War memory,” Holzer says. “This was the way the generals and the admirals wanted us to remember the war, as a battle of gentlemen, a battle of strategies. It’s not a completely authentic view, but it’s an influential view of history.”

For modern readers, these stories are as important to understanding how we’ve come to think of the war as they are to describing the battles themselves. “At this point, it is not just a series of battles or a panoply of leaders, it’s a big part of American consciousness. You can find out how we shaped that consciousness most reliably and most dramatically in this collection.” SHAUN BRADY

A f—ing big deal After it went viral online, ‘Go the F— to Sleep’ became the No. 1 best-selling children’s book ... before it was even released Meet Adam Mansbach, the publishing phenom, in a very curse-laden Metro interview

hen novelist Adam Mansbach’s baby daughter Vivien wouldn’t go to bed, he took the phrase that ran through his and most every other parent’s head and decided to set it to a poem. The result, the children’s book “Go the F— to Sleep,” is now the publishing success of the year. Produced by the small press Akashic Books, the book reached No. 1 on the best-seller list — before it was even published (it’s officially out now). With 400,000 copies of the book in print, Mansbach is just as surprised as you are. Not to mention very, very sleepy.

Can you give our readers a little backstory?

I gave a reading from the book on April 23, months before it was to originally be published in October, just to try it out. The reaction was so strong. People asked me about the book

brilliant marketing campaign; meanwhile I was trying to file cease and desist orders. What will your second book be called? “Shut Up You Little A—hole”?

[Laughs] No. I don’t see doing that one. Well, are you doing a second book? Mansbach

Q&A: Gifted Do you think anyone will read it to their baby? I hope not. I think getting the book and doing that are not mutually exclusive. I’m getting tons of e-mails saying they are going to give it as a baby shower gift. People even tell me they are buying it for their kids to give to them when they’re older, when they have their own kids, so they know what they went through.

and I said they could pre-order it on Amazon. The next morning, it was at 125. I write novels — if they hover around the thousand mark when they’re actually published, that’s respectable. So from that Amazon ranking, it just picked up.

Right. The first wave of media followed, and all they had to go on was a cover and a sample verse but it obviously hit a chord. Then PDFs we had leaked and they started ricocheting all over the Internet. People thought it was all part of a

It’s certainly tempting. But I don’t want it to be a crappy book just to keep this thing going. This is good because it’s an original idea. Some people are like, “Why don’t you do ‘Eat Your F—ing Vegetables.’ And I’m like, “That’s kind of funny but I don’t know if that’s a whole book.” But we are doing a Grated version of the book. Johnny [the book’s publisher] read it to his kids — he censored it while he went — and his kids thought it was hysterical. Kids get it — they know they are pulling all this s— on us. What to know before you go to the most anticipated musical of the summer Whether or not you plan to see the web-slinging wonder onstage this summer, it’s bound to be the talk of the town. Bone up on your “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” conversation points now that it’s (finally) officially open at the Foxwoods Theatre (213 W. 42nd St.). Aguilera’s chunky salary RE: ‘WHY DOES CHRISTINA GET PAID MORE?’

I can’t believe Christina Aguilera gets paid so much. Like you mentioned, the other artists are just as, if not more, talented because they produce their own music as well as sing and play an instrument. Maybe the extra money is to pay for her recent slew of court fees. Either that or they charge her for food because the girl has put on some weight! They should pay for some Jenny Craig or a few psych evals.

Wales sports a sunny disposition Celtic Manor’s Ryder Cup put Welsh golf (and rainy stereotypes) in the spotlight Great courses, superb weather helped dispel preconceptions

W

ith the soggy 2010 Ryder Cup burned into the memory banks, it seemed wise to stock up on rain gear and pack for a week of golf as if it would be played in the shower. But, nursing a sunburn on the way home, one of my misconceptions about the southwestern nation of the UK had been put to rest: It’s not always rainy in Wales. The truth is that during the ill-fated weather week when Celtic Manor Resort was on center stage, more rain fell in one hour than

the monthly average. Yes, it can be rainy, but no, it’s not a guarantee. Then there’s the golf. Whereas Scotland and Ireland may come first to mind, overlook Wales at your own peril. With Celtic Manor’s three superb 18hole championship courses — highlighted by the Twenty Ten Course, the first ever built specifically to host a Ryder Cup — the five-star resort has geography on its side. Just two hours from London Heathrow, Celtic Manor is a prime home base for exploring Wales.

Nightlife Cardiff is the spot to explore if looking for a night out. The first option is Cardiff Bay, an entertainment zone with several blocks of restaurants and bars, as well as the impressive Wales Millennium Centre. For a more rugged evening “on the drink,” the bars in Cardiff City are the proper choice.

The Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor was designed for match play, which is on display late in the round, where nearly every hole poses a risk-reward decision. For more information, visit www.celtic-manor.com or call 866-789-5779

Great golf of many styles Accessible by car from Celtic Manor is Royal Porthcawl, one of the finest links-style golf courses in the world. Established in its current location a century ago, the private club is now offering visitors a taste of the classic, rustic and authentic links golf experience. The golf itself is unlike anything found in the

U.S., with the holes routed through the sandy soil that lies next to the ocean. Royal Porthcawl is ranked among the 100 greatest courses in the world and tests a player’s creativity thanks to strong winds and fast, firm conditions. On the opposite end of the design spectrum, but similarly spectacular, is Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten Course. Built in the valley of the resort’s sprawling, hillside property, the Ryder Cup venue is modern, memorable

and meticulously manicured. Because it was constructed for the USA vs. Europe competition, Twenty Ten’s full of risk-reward holes that leave a lasting impression. Twenty Ten is the gem, but Celtic Manor’s other two courses — Roman Road and Montgomery — are demanding tracks that take advantage of the property’s severe elevation changes. RON VARRIAL

On the menu The Welsh don’t mess around at breakfast, as a typical start to the day includes eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, tomatoes, baked beans and a truly local item called black pudding. This patty of pork fat and pig’s blood tastes like a dry, peppery sausage — a real treat if you look past the ingredients. One tip at the pub: Give Brains beer a try. The Welsh brewery offers several styles, such as Smooth and Dark.

NEXT GREAT RIVALRY ROBYN BECK/GETTY IMAGES

Way too early to call McIlroy the next Tiger Perfect timing, though, for the Open champ to challenge him Rory McIlroy doesn’t need to be the next Tiger Woods. He just needs to be Tiger’s next rival. McIlroy’s historic U.S. Open victory at Congressional where he set the championship scoring record at 16-under, doesn’t set him up to chase Tiger’s records. It sets him up to chase Tiger himself. “Just growing up and watching him, watching him dominate at the Masters at ’97, watching him dominate at Pebble in 2000 and St. Andrews. And just trying to go out there with the same intensity that he has, [that] no lead is big enough. That’s all I was trying to do,” McIlroy said. All Tiger is trying to do is get back on the course. Woods, 35, missed the Open for the first time since 1994 with lower body injuries. And for the first time since he shot 18under at Augusta in 1997, he may have a consistent chief rival. McIlroy seems to fit the

mold more than past pretenders. He’s more likable than Vijay. Already more successful than Sergio. And more resilient than Phil. After all, McIlroy capitalized on the first major chance he got after that meltdown at the Masters earlier this year. Mickelson is still haunted by the driver debacle on the 72nd hole of the 2006 U.S. Open, a major he still hasn’t won. “It would be great to be able to get in contention one day ... and go down the stretch with him,” McIlroy said of competing with a healthy Tiger. “I’ve never really had that experience before.” His competitors think he’ll finally get the chance. “Nothing this kid does ever surprises me,” 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell said of McIlroy. “He’s the best player I’ve ever seen.” A healthy return from Tiger could set up the best rivalry any of us have seen. Gordon hit 118 home runs in a 15-year stretch in the minors in such exotic places as South Bend, Ind., Lancaster, Calif. and Round Rock, Texas. It was his arm, though, that eventually earned him his big-league break with the Yankees. Gordon gave up two earned runs on seven in 5 1/3 innings last week against Texas. “After 10 years of trying it with no big-league time and bouncing around from organization to organization, it just didn’t seem too promising,” Gordon said. “I

Confident Collins gunning for division

haven’t gone through a real slide yet. When they do, I think this division could bunch up,” Collins said before Sunday’s 7-3 loss to the Angels. “There are [89]

games left to play. It’s a little early.” It’s more than a little impressive for the Mets to even be in the NL playoff pack despite the losses of Johan Santana, David Wright and Ike Davis. It is a testament to a team that appears to have a grind-itout mentality along with an aggressiveness on the base paths that has seen them steal a major-league best 22 bags this month. Still, it would certainly help the Mets cause if Jason Bay joined in on the fun. The high-priced left fielder is only hitting .222 with two home runs and

13 RBIs this season. Bay, though, entered Sunday’s finale versus L.A. 7 for his last 17 before going hitless in four at-bats. “When he was really struggling, he was up there trying to hit everything. I think he’s backed off that and he's a lot more selective,” said Collins, who welcomes Oakland to town tonight. “When he begins to really feel good, feel comfortable, he’ll drive some balls. I don’t know if I want him to lift balls. I don't want that swing to change.” DENIS GORMAN sports@metro.us
