In a last minute push to get Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino onto the National League All-Star team, Mayor Michael Nutter had the “Flyin’ Hawaiian” over to City Hall Thursday. He won the final roster spot.
FRANKFORD. A man killed after being run over by a SEPTA bus Friday was identified as Alfredo James, 36, of Bensalem. Police said the bus was pulling into the Frankford Transportation Center around midnight when James ran up to the bus and banged on the door. The operator directed him away from the bus when James stumbled and fell under the wheels. A SEPTA spokesman said the operator, who has been on the job for 17 years, is being held off from driving pending a drug test, which is standard. METRO/SDL
Mayoral candidate: End teachers union
GOP challenger to Mayor Nutter’s second term, Karen Brown, wants to ‘rethink whole school system’ Union leader ‘taken aback’ by proposal Republican mayoral candidate Karen Brown wants to dismantle the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and she took her “vision paper” about doing so to Washington, D.C., to talk with several U.S. representatives Wednesday. The former Catholic- and charter-school teacher and “union girl” also said she wants to remove Superintendent Arlene Ackerman and get back to having an elected school board. “I can’t see how you can fix the schools without breaking the union. It prevents you from getting teachers back to teaching again,” Brown said, railing against tenure in lieu of merit pay. “I’m not against the teachers. I’m against

the teachers union. Our kids are suffering. We’re losing our future. We need to rethink our whole school system.” PFT President Jerry Jordan was “taken aback” when told of Brown’s “get back to teaching” comment. “What does she think they’ve been do-
ing?” he asked. “Nine years of rising test scores are because they’ve been teaching. “It’s very clear that Karen Brown does not want the teachers to have a voice in educating children in this city. It’s very disrespectful. I invite her to go into a school, spend some time there and see if she feels the same way.” Michael Nutter’s campaign spokeswoman Sheila Simmons defended the city’s teachers. “Our schools can be reformed without such drastic measures,” she said. “Teachers are an integral part of any educational system, and their right to organize is not the source of all that is wrong with our schools.”
Taking ideas to Congress
PHILADELPHIA. Brown said she met with four members of the Pennsylvania delegation in Congress: Mike Kelly (Erie), Lou Barletta (Hazelton), Tim Murphy (Pittsburgh) and Tom Marino (Tunkhannock). She also asked U.S. Rep. (and former Eagle) Jon Runyan to help arrange a meeting with N.J. Gov. Chris Christie, who has battled with the state teachers’ union there.

Damning memos read at Kelly trial Evaluations of social worker on trial in girl’s death allegedly reveal job oversights Kelly died in 2006 As the child-endangerment trial of Danieal Kelly’s father and two social workers continued Thursday, a retired DHS supervisor testified that the worker assigned to the case faced numerous reprimands and suspensions on the job. Danieal Kelly’s father, Daniel, and two social workers, Mikal Kamuvaka and Dana Poindexter, are on trial for their alleged roles in the 14-year-old cerebral-palsy stricken girl’s gruesome, DHS-altering death. Reading from her evaluations of Poindexter, Donna Grubbs, who retired from DHS in 2006, said it’s “obvious you care

less and less about your responsibilities as a social worker.” She then spoke about another case that Poindexter “put on a back burner,” but when police responded, they “became nauseated when they entered the house.”
When Poindexter received a 10-day suspension, a memo from then DHS Commissioner Alba Martinez concluded, “I hope this is the last time we have to remind you of these issues.” It wasn’t. When DHS case worker Catherine Mondi fielded a hotline call about Danieal in 2004 — that she could be heard screaming at times and didn’t receive necessary services — she deferred to Poindexter, who was already assigned. She would die two years later. Daniel Kelly is expected to testify. BRIAN HICKEY

Casey Anthony. Justice served?
Opinion
TOM FOREMAN
POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN
MEET THE TOWN TWITS I’ve often said that Twitter, with its 140character limit, is for people who find the more popular Facebook far too deep.
F
or my taste, Twitter is to news dissemination what a dirty limerick is to The Iliad. Still, for getting a short message across, it works like a sock full of pennies to the head: It’s fast and efficient. So I watched with interest as President Obama held his Twitter town hall this week. The premise and the promise were simple: Let people all across the land lob their questions directly at the chief Quoted executive in a live forum, and cut out all those pesky journal“Town hall ists in the middle. Fair enough. meetings, once Only that’s not what hapyou reach the pened. For all of their vaunted “crowd sourcing” and “direct presidential democracy” talk, Internet level, are like types are quick to take on the professional trappings of (gasp!) the dreaded Mainstream Media as wrestling.” soon as the chips on the table TOM FOREMAN start adding up — like, say, when the president of the United States comes to call.
S
o, predictably, the Twitter town hall included eight regional moderators to sift through the questions and to decide which ones spoke for the largest crowds; in short, to do precisely what the bloggers always whine about the MSM doing. That’s how some 40,000 questions were boiled down to the 18 that were actually asked. Much to the consternation of the Twitter tribe, even that scant number included one question from House Speaker John Boehner, and one from a newspaper columnist. The funny thing is, despite all that, I saw how this really could work. Put a politician into a chair with a live camera, open the spigot to the Internet, and simply let the questions flow. Keep everything onscreen, so participants can see which queries the pol answers, and which ones he skips. But almost no one in big league politics really wants to see that happen. The risk of embarrassment, a wrong answer or a cyber-pie in the face is just too high. Town hall meetings, once you reach the presidential level, are like professional wrestling. Even if they look spontaneous, no matter who is hosting the event, the conversation will never stray far from the script in real life ... or online. – CNN’s Tom Foreman is a regular on “AC360°”/www.ac360.com and “The Situation Room.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. News Corp. on ropes: Murdoch shuts NOW
Fox News parent company exposed to negative press over UK hacking scandal Owner of media empire moves to nip PR nightmare in the bud
In a breathtaking response to a scandal engulfing his media empire, Rupert Murdoch moved on Thursday to close down the News of the World, Britain’s biggest-selling Sunday newspaper. As allegations mounted this week that its journalists had hacked the voicemails of thousands of people, from child murder victims to the families of Britain’s war dead, the tabloid had hemorrhaged advertising and alienated millions of readers. Yet no one, least of all the 168-year-old paper’s staff, was prepared for the
drama of a single sentence that will surely go down as one of the most startling turns in the 80-year-old Australian-born press baron’s long and controversial career. “News International today announces that this Sunday, 10 July 2011, will be the last issue of the News of the World,” read the preamble to a statement from Murdoch’s son James, who heads the British newspaper arm of News Corp. Hailing a fine muckraking tradition at the paper, which his father bought in 1969, James Murdoch told
The background The main accusations are that journalists took advantage of limited security on cell-phone voicemail boxes to listen in to messages of people involved in major stories. Police have said a private detective working for the newspaper hacked into messages left on the phone of a murdered schoolgirl. Police have also been criticized over allegations officers took money for information.

Fat rising: Obesity up by 90 percent in many US states Obesity rates climbed at least 90 percent in 17 states from 1995 to last year — gains that have a direct bearing on U.S. health spending, according to a report. Jeff Levi, the study’s author, emphasized that it will take years to get the obesity epidemic under control. “This is not a national diet that will be over in a couple of months,” he said. The report’s authors called on U.S. lawmakers to refrain from cutting programs to fight the condition. Medicare and Medicaid each spend more than 20 percent of their budget

It’s always sunny
with Charlie Day The ‘Horrible Bosses’ star on playing a meek dental hygienist who does not want to be hit on by Jennifer Aniston It’s a hard sell indeed Day offers some spoilers for Season 7 of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’
C
harlie Day, who is mostly known for his illiterate, glue-sniffing character on FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” has been put in the unlikely position of explaining why being pursued for a sexual liaison by a character resembling Jennifer Aniston is unpleasant. It’s not an easy job. “Most men don’t cheat on their wives. Not all, but close,” he offers rather sheepishly. In the new comedy “Horrible Bosses,” he plays a dental hygienist to Aniston’s man-eating dentist. Entirely devoted to his fiancee, Day’s character, Dale, is terrified by his boss’s blackmailing seduction. As the logic of the film goes, he and his buddies — played by Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman — therefore decide to kill Dale’s boss along with their own. Dark as it may seem, “Bosses,” much like “Sunny,” isn’t afraid to cover controversial topics. “I don’t think anything is too taboo to make funny,” says Day. “Murder is a terrible thing. But set against

hat’s where the overlap between “Horrible Bosses” and “It’s Always Sunny” — for which Day is also a writer and producer — lies. He has just wrapped production on Season 7 of the sitcom, which depicts the depraved lives of a group of egocentric bottom-feeders. No topic — from abortion to cats wearing mittens — is too crooked or bizarre. “Managing to fly under the radar enough so that we don’t lose our street cred, but be a big enough hit that we’re actually a very successful show, has been a really nice balance,” says Day, who also offers up spoilers for the new season, premiering in September: “One of my favorite episodes is a ‘Toddlers and Tiaras’-esque thing, a kiddie pageant episode, which is just ridiculous,” Day says. “Frank has gotten involved in pageantry. He thinks it’s grown women he’s getting involved with but it happens to be kids — and he has to go through with it. It’s another great season.” HEIDI PATALANO

Yeah, these ‘Bosses’ are pretty bad A plot to kill management seems implausible At least the dumb idea provides a few good laughs Movie studios know that while many people are unemployed right now, those of us who have jobs still feel pretty stuck in what we’re doing. No one’s happy. No one feels hopeful about the future. Ergo, a movie about three dim men who, suffering under the tyranny of terrible management, decide the only way to fix things is to kill their bosses. Should we feel insulted? Judging by the quality of
this movie, maybe. Director Seth Gordon has the best actors you could ask for in place. The three demeaned laborers — Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day — do work well with what they’ve got. They gel as a group, even if the jokes themselves aren’t that funny. The biggest problem here lies in the implausibility of what they’re doing. Would anyone really decide

to kill a gorgeous boss (Jennifer Aniston) who is coming on to her subordinate (Day)? You can sense the screenwriters wrote and re-

Along the way there are a few great laughs — especially with the presence of Jamie Foxx as Motherf---er Jones, a con artist who becomes the trio’s counselor in all things homicidal. But in the end, the premise still feels dead on arrival. HEIDI PATALANO

When Pixar meets James Bond John Lasseter’s sequel to ‘Cars’ is a globe-trotting adventure The Pixar chief on picking out the models to serve as spies and villains Why this franchise is near and dear to him too, of that era — especially the Pininfarina Design Group that was doing stuff. And so we kind of mixed it all together and kind of created our own cool car.
“Cars 2 marks Pixar Animation’s 12th film and a return to directing for John Lasseter, who previously helmed “Toy Story, “Toy Story 2, “A Bug’s Life and 2006’s “Cars. The Pixar chief, Disney Animation boss and avid gear-head sat down to take us behind the scenes of his latest.
And you use infamously awful cars as villains.
That was one of my favorite things, coming up with the idea of in a “Cars spy movie, having the lemons of the world be the bad guys — oh, that was so much fun. Honestly, we had a big old long list of cars we wanted to have as the bad guys, but there were a lot of car companies that didn’t want to have their cars represented as bad guys.
For the new British spy character, Finn McMissile (voiced by Michael Caine), you pretty much had to use an Aston Martin, didn’t you? From left: “Cars stars Lewis Hamilton and Owen Wilson with John Lasseter.
Actually, it’s an original car that was inspired by a bunch of British sports cars from that era. There’s a number of different cars in there. We were inspired by the beautiful car designs from Italy,

Picking favorites So after 25 years and 12 films, can you pick your favorite Pixar movie? No, I can’t pick a favorite. That’s like kids of mine. But the “Cars movies are very, very personal for me because my father was a parts manager at a Chevrolet dealership, and all of the kind of experiences that the characters do in the films, even “Cars 2 — not the spy part of it, but traveling around the world and feeling out of place and things like that — are very much like things I’ve experienced. You can tell me if your dad was a spy. No, he wasn’t. My dad was just a simple parts manager at Jones Chevrolet in Whittier, Calif.

Literally I walked in and it felt like heaven — nothing but white balloons, white confetti on the floor, then they play my favorite mariachi singer on a flatscreen TV, and it was my favorite song with my photos and runway videos, so it was like Jaslene’s heaven.”

Philly! @iamcolinquinn Philly lesson just learned. Never go to North Philly schoolyard to play ball in my Selena Gomez t shirt! @iamcolinquinn Bored today. Gonna go over to boathouse row and start splashing people pretending I don’t know how to use my oars. That’ll get em going. @iamcolinquinn Going to Independence Hall guide “How do we really know it happened the way you’re saying it did? They didn’t have cameras then, playboy!” @iamcolinquinn I’m going to Liberty bell with a bucket of spackle and a putty knife. While the guide is talking I’ll be yelling. “Skim coat the gypsum...”
ring in his birthday with a couple friends at a pub — the man has been going all out with fetes fit for a king since his 20th, and his 30th on Wednesday at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City was no different. Cassidy, clad head to toe in a canary yellow suit and slippers with the DJ Cassidy crest, took the stage to introduce the reunited New Edition as guests like Swizz Beatz (“Everything’s good,” he told us of his new baby with wife Alicia Keys) mingled and sipped Hennessey Black cocktails in honor of the drink’s first anniversary. It was a wild night for sure — and we couldn’t resist asking stars about their craziest birthdays. DJ Cassidy: “It would be the last one at the New York Public Library, where Rakim and Bobby Brown performed and Jay-Z and Nas were at one table rapping every line.”

Talking points
Dirty mouth? Yes please
Smart to appear on ABC Elizabeth Smart — who was abducted from her Salt Lake City, Utah, bedroom in 2002 — has signed a deal with ABC News to become a commentator on missing persons and child abduction cases, per ABC. The 23-year-old Smart could appear on-air, most likely “Good Morning America”
Adrienne Bailon: “My most exciting birthday was probably my 26th birthday. I got surprised — I got taken away on a trip to Turks and Caicos with like 10 of my friends. [I] thought I was going to Miami. I arrived in Miami and all of sudden all my friends popped out, it was the most random thing.”
Timberlake
It looks like Justin Timberlake likes the raunchy girls. “There’s nothing better than a pretty girl with a nasty mouth. It’s every guy’s fantasy,” the singer tells the August issue of Cosmopolitan. “I like a woman who doesn’t necessarily care if other people like her. She is who she is and figures people can take it or leave it.”
Jonathan Cheban, “The Spin Crowd”: “My craziest birthday party was probably last year. It was the premiere of my show, it was on the night of my birthday.” But surely the best remark came from Kirstie Alley, who couldn’t remember a) her own 30th birthday party and b) why she was even at the event in the first place. “Are you kidding me? I have no idea. Is it his 30th?” she asked us.
Man vs. Jake Gyllenhaal Here’s someone I wouldn’t mind being stranded with on a barren landscape: Jake Gyllenhaal. Sadly, though, that honor goes to Bear Gryllis. Yes, the movie star and all-around hottie will appear on the season premiere of “Man vs. Wild.” Tune in July 11 to the Discovery Channel to watch Gryllis and his new hiking buddy traverse the glaciers and icy waters of Iceland and, per a trailer of the show, eat a worm. If that worm came from a tequila bottle and you replace “Iceland” with “Mexico,” you’d have my idea of a perfect Jake Gyllenhaal date.

Gaga: Ticking time bomb Investigative journalist Ian Halperin, who is currently working on a book about Lady Gaga, makes startling allegations about the singer to Star magazine, saying she’s a “ticking time bomb” regard-
ing her diet and drug use. “Those who have worked with her on tour reported to me that Gaga barely ate for weeks at a time to fit into her costumes,” said Halperin. “She is sick and obsessed with her weight. One friend told me that Gaga will stare at herself in the mirror for hours on end, analyzing and critiquing her body. It’s an unhealthy obsession.” And as for her drug use, Halperin states that, “From heroin to cocaine and ecstasy, her friends say that she has done every drug conceivable. You name it she has done it.”

Patience makes the Soundgarden
grow
It’s been 20 years since the heyday of grunge, but Chris Cornell is ready to rock again with the band that put him on the map There is a lot less pressure on the band, but that means the new album may take a while Chris Cornell has a practical approach to Soundgarden these days. He does what he does because he and his band like it, not because a record company says they have to. The singer, fresh off a solo tour, says he looks forward to the release that playing aggressive music with his old band gives him. You’ve been doing a lot of solo touring. How different is the mind-set between those shows and Soundgarden shows?
Lately I’ve been doing what I call the “Songbook” tour, which is pretty much just me and an acoustic guitar, so it’s about as opposite as you can get. ... In that way, you don’t really have to strive for balance. One kind
of takes care of the other. After touring around for a month and a half, doing that [acoustic tour], I was really looking forward to getting in the studio with Soundgarden and playing loud, aggressive rock music. And then after doing that for a while it will feel great to just sit alone and play an acoustic guitar. So in that way I think I’m pretty fortunate to be able to have such dramatic extremes. The last time we spoke, you said this about Soundgarden: “To me, making a record makes more sense than doing a live show. And even that would be something that I don’t think would make sense. It doesn’t seem like anything like that would ever happen, so
the idea to reform just to play live seems even more ludicrous to me.” When did you depart from that way of thinking?
I guess once we were actually in a room, talking about doing different things to sort of service the legacy of Soundgarden. ... We didn’t get back together to immediately get an album out because we want to go on tour and get paid. We’ve done it in a time that was comfortable and in a way that makes sense to us, where everyone’s inspired and having fun, writing and recording new material at a pace that feels good with the concern that it’s a great record that we want to put out. [There is] nothing else, no other concern at all.

Q&A: Getting laid back
Is the band proceeding with caution so you don’t fall into the traps that caused tension and led to the breakup? Well, I think the main one is avoiding concerns about scheduling. I suppose there was always a factor of record companies worrying about competition, other record labels and what they’re releasing by what bands that would be in direct competition with our band. And that’s concerned with a lot of different things — with touring, with radio airplay, with TV airplay and all the things that go along with it. And we’re not really in that position
anymore. We’re just Soundgarden, and we’re just in that stage of being a band that there isn’t really competition. There isn’t really another band that can rush in and take our place if we’re not ready. And that’s made everything pretty relaxed. Smells like retro spirit Nostalgia seems to operate on 20-year cycles. In the ’80s there was a great big groovy ’60s revival, and in the last decade, many musicians totally took their cues from the ’80s. It’s only fitting that the ’90s are coming back now. Here are a few signs. Dave Grohl told New Music Express last week that he played “Smells Like Teen Spiritâ€? for the first time in 17 years when Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic did a guest spot on the new Foo Fighters album. “Krist says, ‘You wanna run through some oldies?’ Me and Pat [Smear, who is now in Foo Fighters and was also in Nirvana] look at each other. pop songs and turn them inside-out — into something abstract.” But Camera Phone is a literary experiment as well. After all, Altman will spend the next four years of his life studying Donne, Milton and Shakespeare. His lyrics attempt to describe the emotional numbing and painful isolation that sometimes coincides with adulthood — all set to sugarcoated samples. “One of the things I’m thinking through in my own life is the experience of being less than the person you thought you would be, which, I admit, is a profoundly unsexy thing to sing about in a rock song,” he explains. “Rock music is usually about wish fulfillment. It creates desires in the listener. I’m trying to write about the opposite side.”

Robert Smith says gay marriage has nothing to do with rights. He would do well to read up on the concept of the tyranny of the majority. The NRA as an example has a membership of less than 1.5 percent, yet they are accepted into society.

could explain how the lives of gay and lesbian couples are so different from “the mainstream”? They go to work, pay taxes and eat their meals like the rest of us. What they do in the privacy of the bedroom is no more our business than are the private lives of blacks, Hispanics or people with the surname “Smith.”

Hard-throwing Dominican thriving in closer’s role for Phillies Could he be the guy next season? Reliever is perfect in five save chances Boasts 0.87 ERA, 0.81 WHIP this season GETTY IMAGES
When Antonio Bastardo came up in 2009, fans could argue that the hardthrowing Dominican possessed the best surname in baseball. Now, the Phillies’ faithful can make a case for Bastardo as the best reliever in baseball. Bastardo, who recently became the team’s fourth closer of the season, has posted ridiculous numbers halfway through the season. He has a 0.87 ERA and has given up just 11 hits in 31 innings. He has struck out 35 and walked just 14 batters, with a crazy 0.81 WHIP and five saves in five chances. The numbers are staggering, even when comparing Bastardo to Mariano Rivera’s finest work. Sure, it’s a small sample set — but look at how much Bastardo has improved since he arrived in 2009. He posted a 2-3 record with a 6.46 ERA as a starter. He was moved to the bullpen in 2010 and he lowered his ERA to 4.34. The main difference for Bastardo is that he’s not just a fastball pitcher anymore. His slider has been very good this season and his numbers are off the chart.

Could this be Bastardo’s audition for the closer’s job next season? It sure looks that way, with other top guys coming off the books.

Brad Lidge The current ninth-inning guy (we think, right?) has a club option for $12.5M in 2012. Considering he’s yet to pitch this season — and has fought major injury after major injury since ’08 — he’s as good as gone. Ryan Madson The free-agent-to-be has also struggled with injuries and performance. But with 15 saves in 16 chances this season, a club will throw closer’s money at him. Jose Contreras Thrived in closer’s role early in the year, but injuries caught up with him — and he’ll be 40 next year. Bestcase scenario? He’d be used in a two-man save rotation.
WHIP (0.81) is the fourth-best among relievers with at least 28 innings.
“I’ve just tried to get better,” Bastardo said. “I just want to be the best I can be. I had to make improvements in my game.” Bastardo has pitched so well that he is the trusted closer. “I feel good about that because they gave me a chance to close the game and I’ve done it,” Bastardo said. “I want to keep doing it or whatever my job is here. I come in and I know I have to get three outs no matter what inning it is.” ED CONDRAN sports@metro.us
