Brownie snack offers ‘relaxed’ experience Some store owners don’t see problem with ‘Lazy Larry’
Convenience store owner Tomas Rodriquez isn’t taking Lazy Larry relaxation brownies off his shelves until the Food and Drug Administration makes him. “We are allowed to sell it ... as long as they are legal I will keep them,” said Rodriquez, owner of Montrose Spa in Cambridge. The FDA announced Monday that the makers of the brownies, a treat marketed as a chilled-out mood enhancer, violates the agency’s regulations by using melatonin as an unapproved food additive. Lazy Larry laces its cakes with the drug, promising to help consumers “wind down” and relax. In a letter sent to the Tennessee-based maker, the FDA said they can seize the product from stores if the recipe doesn’t change. The company, HBB LLC, has 15 days to respond to the letter. But Rodriquez said he sells as many as 36 individually wrapped cakes to college students each week at his store near Harvard Law School and the chocolate-y treats would stay on his shelves until the FDA issues definite restrictions. Comparing them to alcohol and 5-Hour Energy Drinks, he said if it’s not against the law he doesn’t see a problem.
What’s in a Larry? Lazy Larrys contain melatonin, a naturally occurring neurohormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle, according to an FDA spokesperson. WHAT DO YOU THINK? POST YOUR COMMENTS: WWW.METRO.US/BOS
“It’s like everything else, they have a warning on the label,” said Rodriquez. Other Hub shops already banned the brownies for fear of a lawsuit, however. Tony Massari, owner of Boston Common Coffee, said he heard tales of people giving the sleep-inducing munchies to kids, causing them to get sick. “I didn’t want to open myself up to issues down the road,” he said. Owner of Lazy Larry, Terry Harris, said in an e-mail that the company is taking immediate steps to address concerns expressed by the FDA, “all of which stem from the way the product is packaged, labeled and marketed.” However, the FDA said the food additive is the major issue. Police searching for ‘polite’ robber Norwood police are looking for a machete-wielding, yet polite, robber with “brown, puppy-dog eyes.” The man robbed a Sunoco convenience store about 8:45 p.m. July 26. Police posted surveillance video and pictures of the suspect online this week. “Give me all the money in the register,” the robber said, according to the surveillance tape. Then he makes other demands. “Five packs of Newports (cigarettes),” he tells the clerk. “Give me a ton of scratch tickets, too. I want all the $20 ones.” Before he leaves, he makes sure to mind his manners. “All right. Have a good night. Thank you,” he

The most storied rivalry in sports typically heats up as the baseball schedule winds down and the August temperatures soar. But a new book is helping fuel the fire that is the Red Sox--Yankees rivalry. “Things that Might Annoy a Yankee Fan” was written by Boston comedians — and obviously lifelong Red Sox fans — Dave Barend and Paul Nardizzi. Although Barend grew up in upstate New York, he eventually found his way and moved to the Bay State.
“When you grow up surrounded by Yankees fans, you either become a Yankees fan or, if you have half a brain, you end up hating Yankees fans,” he said. “I have half a brain, so I became a Yankee-hater.” The duo said the suggestions in the book come from their experiences with Yankees fans (like Barend’s brother-in-law). The annoyances range from the silly to the sadistic, and Nardizzi said the book contains a warning that some of the suggestions — like lighting a Yan-

There’s no shame in looking up “All’s Well That Ends Well” on Wikipedia. If you didn’t read it in high school, you may have never heard of it. “It’s just never done,” says Fred Sullivan, Jr., an actor in the Shakespeare on the Common production that exposes the littleknown play free of charge to anyone willing to stake out a spot in the grass. Scholars often call it a “problem play,” because the story doesn’t fall neatly into a comedy or tragedy category. “There’s a lot of joy, but there’s also death and dishonor and unrequited love on just about every page. And the characters are just as unlikeable as they are likable,” says Sullivan, who has now performed on the Common five years in a row. In this show he plays “swaggering coward” Parolles, best friend

to escapee fiance Bertram. Performing for huge crowds on an outdoor stage is a different experience from acting in a traditional theater. Crystal-clear enunciation and extra-animated body language are musts, explains Sullivan.
“I find it extremely romantic,” he says. “It’s 6,000 people a night, on blankets, eating salads, listening to the greatest sound system in the world pump Shakespeare into Boston Common. If you get loud enough, your voice bounces off the buildings.”
Shakespeare on the Common performances are a throwback to the playwright’s outdoor shows at London’s Globe Theatre 400 years ago. “There were all walks of life watching, from the queen to the groundlings,” muses Sullivan. ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ Through Aug. 14 Parkmand Bandstand Boston Common Free 617-426-0863 www.commshakes.org

Is going raw right for you? The raw food diet brings eating back to basics Benefits and drawbacks of uncooked meals STOCKBYTE

The summer heat may be inspiring you to give your stove a break — but could you give up cooked foods for good? Proponents of the raw food diet say you can and should. The raw food diet comprises unheated foods and foods heated to no more than 115 degrees. Advocates of the diet claim that it wards away cancer, diabetes and other health problems, because powerful enzymes that aid in health are not destroyed through cooking. “There’s no question in my mind that this is the way man was meant to eat,” says Brian Clement, Ph.D., the co-director of Hippocrates Health Institute, which incorporates a raw food diet to support the healing of its patients. “It’s not magic, it’s chemistry we’re talking about.” But not everyone is touting the diet’s benefits. “Scientifically, there isn’t a lot of evidence that supports the benefits of a raw food diet above and beyond what a healthy vegan or vegetation diet would offer,” says Monika Saigal, a registered dietitian. “There are some nutrients that are

diet. It takes a lot of time and preparation to make sure you’re getting the nutrients you need,” she says. If you think the diet is right for you, Clement first recommends reducing your intake of meat and dairy, and then going totally raw on a gradual basis. “You don’t have to take this lock, stock and barrel,” he asserts. “Take your time, and it’s so easy to do.” MEREDITH ENGEL

New breads on board at Subway We’ve always enjoyed stopping at Subway for a quick, on-the-go lunch — and now we have even more reasons to love the popular sandwich chain: All of its 6-inch and foot-long breads are now fortified with calcium and vitamin D, giving a 6-inch sandwich the nutritional equivalency of a glass of milk. The move comes on the heels of the chain’s decision to lower the sodium of its Fresh Fit sandwiches by 28 percent and its national menu by 16 percent. We’ll eat to that! MEREDITH ENGEL

Atheism is not a religion RE: “ATHEISTS LACK CONSISTENCY”: Not all athe-

I was able to find just one story after some quick Googling, in which the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill assigned a book describing the earliest 35 suras. From what I can tell, this is not teaching the Koran as revealed truth, it’s an attempt to

‘Pride,’ ‘professionalism’ earn Faulk another year GETTY IMAGES
‘An inspiration to all of us,’ Belichick says Status was unclear after 2010 injury 13th season for Faulk Kevin Faulk wasn’t sure what his future held with the Patriots after he tore his ACL during Week 2 of the 2010 season. The Pats’ all-purpose yardage leader was on IR, and his contract was up at the end of the season. But Faulk got a call from coach Bill Belichick shortly before the start of the lockout saying the team wanted the 13-year vet back. Faulk’s resume speaks for itself, but he’s getting up there in age. It was his leadership and attitude that earned him another opportunity. “He’s been a team player,” Belichick said yesterday. “He takes great pride and professionalism in his job. He’s a great example for all of us in terms of being a professional and being team-oriented and putting himself secondary to

Troy Brown, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and many other players we’ve had like that,” Belichick said. “He’s really at the top of that list.” The Pats drafted two running backs this year: Shane Vereen and Steven Ridley. With a short offseason, they’ll need all the help they can get — from coaches and, if they’re smart, Faulk. “I think any player on the team or any coaches on the team for that matter that watches Kevin Faulk can see positives in Kevin and learn from it,” Belichick said. “He’s an inspiration to all of us the way he carries himself, the way he goes about his job and his positive contributions to the team.” JIMMY TOSCANO
Kevin Faulk broke into the NFL in 1999 as a 23-year-old kick returner for the Patriots. He’s since rushed for 3,550 yards in 154 games (44 starts).

T
he damage has been done. What we’ve seen in recent weeks is not a dispute among men and women of principle engaging in honest debate. What we’ve seen are politicians more concerned with embarrassing and humiliating the other political party, more concerned with leveraging the next election, and more willing to engage in nasty, inflammatory namecalling, than they are concerned about us, “we the people. They are all at fault, and they are all disgraceful. It’s not just my view alone. I think it the world’s view as well. Reuter’s, on July 29th, reported on the perception of, China, our largest creditor. Its public voice, the People's Daily newspaper, called our government’s handling of our debt crisis "irresponsible" and "immoral." It accused U.S. politicians of "sacrificing other people's interests in exchange for a few votes." It concluded: "The farce taking place on the U.S. political stage has let the whole world know where the United States' political problems are. Despite the obvious bias and antagonism China may have for our democratic system, the problem is that they could still be right. Can our government make an important decision, or will it be more of the same in the future? That’s one angry citizen’s view. Š 2011 George Warshaw

“Decorating in my city, Atlanta, is especially fun when you take advantage of the warm climate. I purchased my brick and stucco ranch (built in 1950) four years ago. The lines and architecture are very modern for a 1950s design. I even have pink flamingos on my lawn for a retro, whimsical touch! I had the house painted all white to convey a tropical, mid-century vibe.”
“The home is a 1950s ranch-style home, extremely common in Dallas. The kitchen was redone to go back to the L-shaped format [for which] these ranch-style homes are known. This kitchen is reconfigured from a bar that protruded into the space to an open floor plan to increase the working space. New quartz countertops with metallicgray cabinets give the kitchen a contemporary look.”
“Often in New York, apartments come as a blank canvas — a white box with white walls. I believe in infusing bold, brilliant color as much as possible. So in my own master bedroom, I painted all of the walls pumpkin orange, my signature color, and then paired it with crisp, bright white and chocolate brown. My advice is to select only your favorite things and seek inspiration there.”
Atlanta Chicago
Kevin Grace, 42 “As a designer, one of the most influential opportunities one can have is to live in a metropolitan city like Chicago.
There are many different places I like to go to be inspired. If I were to sum up ‘How does Chicago influence my design style?’ I
would have to say it’s by far the architecture. ‘Old mixed with new’ is the basis for my design approach in almost everything I create.”
