Website connects starving students, aka ‘sugar babies,’ with wealthy ‘patrons’ NYU has highest number of registered members, creator says New York University has the sweetest coeds of them all. Nearly 500 students have signed up to be “sugar babies” on the dating site SeekingArrangement.com, claims site creator Brandon Wade. The site matches wealthy “daddies” with cash-strapped undergrads. “NYU is the top school because the students have a high rent on top of tuition,” said Wade. NYU tuition, on top of room, board and book fees, can cost a whopping $58,000 a year, and some coeds are desperate for alternative ways to support themselves in an already pricey New York City, he said. NYU students aren’t alone in seeking “benefactors.” Hundreds of students from top schools like the University of California, Berkeley, University of Michigan, and even Harvard University use the site, looking for sugar daddies or sugar mommas, according to Wade. He said he determines the number of college students based on those who join with .edu email addresses. “When a sugar baby goes to a good school, she tends to boast,” he said. “I love New York and I’ll do whatever it takes to make it here,” advertised one NYU sugar baby.

Eyed for a different game NEW YORK. Alex Rodriguez might be in hot water over his poker play. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig told him he must meet with investigators who are looking into illegal poker games where he was allegedly a player. Reports accused Rodriguez of being at illegal poker games that also reportedly drew the likes of actors Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. METRO/AB

FOR AND AGAINST IS IT OK TO SEEK OUT A SUGAR DADDY? TWO OF METRO’S FEMALE STAFFERS SPEAK UP.

“I’m 23, graduated from NYU last year and have been (literally) a starving artist ever since.” New York City is the most popular city on the site, with Los Angeles not far behind, said Wade. “It’s a relationship and dating website, there’s no money for sex,” Wade said. “People don’t want to sit across from a dumb blonde who can’t hold a conversation.”

Cough it up Sugar babies can create profiles on Seeking Arrangement free of charge, but a basic sugar daddy membership costs $50 a month and “Diamond Club” daddies pay $2,160 a year to belong to the highest tier of the site.

Russian wives, rats star on new NYC reality TV New Yorkers, here are the people representing you on prime-time television this season: Anastasia Kurinnaya, 26, is part of Lifetime’s “Russian Dolls,” a “Jersey Shore”-ish show that follows eight Brighton Beach Russians. The series premiers Thursday, Aug. 11, at 10:30 p.m. It is one of three shows in the works featuring New Yorkers. The second is “Rat Busters NYC,” which

Promising a “famous, alluring, vibrant and highly protective community,” “Russian Dolls” features shots of tanned, fur-clad women drinking vodka, hanging out in bars and, of course — this being reality TV — even getting into a few hair-pulling brawls. I always wanted to be a celebrity. I thought, why not?” The beach-based show will portray Brooklynites in all their glory — and Kurinnaya did not rule out a bar fight or two.

“There’s a lot of drama, I’ll just say that,” she said. Equally dramatic will be rat-chasers Jimmy Tallman and Michael Morales, who battle roaches and vermin while cameras capture the action. “It shows the pressure, dealing with pests,” Morales said. “It’s constant: bed bugs, rats, roaches. It just never stops, and it’s indicative of New York.” ALISON BOWEN

On Bravo network, cameras will follow 20somethings chasing their dream. “Paint the Town,” a tentative title, follows young women — they’ve nicknamed themselves “gallerinas” — working at art galleries in Manhattan. The show is currently in production. In heels on gallery floors by day, and hip clubs by night, the show hopes to portray “a business with so few opportunities to rise up the ranks.” METRO/AB

A supervisor at a psychiatric facility in Staten Island turned himself in to police yesterday and was charged with strangling a patient to death. Erik Stanley, 37, was working as a developmental aide supervisor at the South Beach Psychiatric Center on Dec. 4. That was the day 27year-old Jawara Henry, an autistic patient at the center, became extremely agitated and began biting other patients and staff there. As Stanley helped other staff try to restrain the

man, he “caused Henry’s death by using excessive pressure on the patient’s neck and torso,” said Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan. “[Stanley] did not follow protocol nor use proper techniques

while trying to restrain Henry,” said Donovan. Henry’s death was ruled a homicide, and the city Medical Examiner found he died of asphyxia by neck and chest compression. Yesterday’s arrest comes after an eight-month investigation by Donovan’s office. Stanley was charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person. CARLY BALDWIN

Kathleen LaMattina poses with a porcupine at the Bronx Zoo.

In a day’s work at Bronx Zoo From owl surgery to playing porcupine tag Bronx zookeeper wouldn’t have it any other way By her own admission, Kathleen LaMattina is much more comfortable with a 3-foot-long Indian Crested porcupine in her arms than she is speaking with a reporter. One moment cleaning up emu droppings and the next making baby talk to a Fennec fox running circles around her, LaMattina is tailor-made for the job of acclimating 300 animals to human contact for the Bronx Zoo’s outreach programs in New York. In fact, she often takes them home with her overnight. What did you first do when you got into work?

First I checked on all the animals and said ‘hi’ to my zookeepers to make sure everything was OK. Then I played with Buckley, a wallaby that I hand-raised after his mother tried to eat him. Wallabies eat their young?

He was probably just bitten as she was trying to get him out of her pouch. It’s very energy inexpensive to give birth to a kangaroo or wallaby, but to actually raise the baby takes a long time. So if she’s not feeling well, the mother decides to focus on herself. It happens in the wild. So what did you do after you

What’s next? I’m going to work on animal-enrichment activities. We worry about the physical well being of animals, but their psychological well being is just as important. We build sandboxes for our desert foxes and make toys for our parrots. Then I’m going to play with Jerika, a blue and gold macaw who was actually sketched for the movie “Rio.” Then Stickers and I are going to run laps later. She’s an Indian Crested porcupine. We run up and down the hall — she chases us, then we chase her. played with the wallaby?

I had to bring an owl in for a surgical procedure. He has a tumor on his foot. He came here in 1994, the same year that I came, actually. We take care of animals from the cradle to the grave. Are you a vegetarian?

Botox is breaking new ground.

Overactive bladder is next Botox frontier Overactive bladders could become the next big frontier for Botox, the antiwrinkle drug, later this year. It would significantly boost sales of the $1.5 billion-a-year product, according to Allergan Inc.’s chief executive, David Pyott. Allergan earlier on Wednesday reported earnings growth for the secondquarter, fueled largely by sales of Botox for smoothing wrinkles and for a growing range of medical uses. Overactive bladder, caused by uncontrollable contractions of the organ, causes frequent urination, urgent need to urinate and inability to control urination. “Current drugs for overactive bladder just don’t work that well,” Pyott said in an interview, “and studies show that after a year, 70 percent of patients don’t respond to treatment.” Standard treatments,

‘The Glee Project’: ‘Boot camp’ for the big league

No one has been named the next star of “Glee” just yet, but the contestants on “The Glee Project” already feel like bona fide celebrities. On Monday night, the final six singers walked the red carpet at NBCUniversal’s Television Critics Association party at trendy The Bazaar by Jose Andres in Los Angeles; and each of them looked every bit a star, too. “It was amazing,” contestant Alex Newell gushed the next day. “We all love to perform, but to get recognized for what we do and what we love to do is amazing. I know that I loved it, and I know that everybody loved to be on a red carpet for the first time too.” The downside of fame via a reality competition, however, is that only one contestant wins the grand prize of a seven-episode guest stint on “Glee.” The producers admit the process of whittling down the talent pool on a weekly basis was “excruciating.”

“To some it might seem hasty. But it was something that I truly felt in my heart,” he says. “And when you make a decision like that, I think it’s really hard to regret it. You just have to follow what you believe. And I believe that, you know, when a door closes, another door opens. And it’s only going to lead to great things.”

“Everyone is fit for the show, which made our decision even more difficult,” says mentor Zach Woodlee, who also serves as choreographer/ producer on “Glee.” “We actually had to look at this show as a trial and sort of a boot camp to get people Season 3-ready. So each week it was who is raising the bar. We would sit there and be like, who is making the most progress in this week. It’s who was ready to be at Season 3 quality of our cast on the scripted show.” So is there any chance more than one competitor might wind up walking the halls of McKinley High? “Ultimately that’s up to [‘Glee’ creator] Ryan Murphy,” mentor Robert J. Ulrich says. “But they’re all wonderful enough to have that chance; and as a casting director, I would keep them in mind for everything else that I do.” AMBER RAY

Longoria fights for farmworker rights Why the actress executive-produced “The Harvest/La Cosecha” What you can do to help When she’s not stirring up drama on “Desperate Housewives,” Eva Longoria is a passionate philanthropist for a variety of causes, including farmworker rights. As the executive producer of “The Harvest/La Cosecha,” Longoria, 36, sought to raise awareness of child farmers and the challenges they face on and off the fields. She spoke with us about her involvement and how you can help the cause. How much did you know about this issue before you got involved with the film?

I’ve always been a farmworker advocate, but even I was surprised to find out the statistics of child farmworkers. I was floored to learn how many children still work in agriculture in the United States, and how many kids are unprotected, uneducated and live in poverty. I was literate of the community and the dialogue, but I was very ignorant of the amount of children still in the fields. Would you say that’s what surprised you the most about this topic?

Yeah. I was honored to be able to humanize the issue

Get involved You’ve introduced the CARE Act, which seeks to change the laws for child farmers, on Capitol Hill. What can we do to get involved?

Call your congressperson and try to help get the CARE Act passed. On the smaller scale, you should always eat organic because the pesticides that are used in the field are in a measurement that is for a 150-pound male. If you’re smaller than a 150-pound male, those doses affect you. By eating organic, you’re not only eating better for yourself — you’ll know that [a] child was not sprayed with a chemical while picking the food that you’re eating. by doing this film and telling this story of these kids. It’s one thing to hear statistics all the time, but when you hear the story of Zulema, who was one of those children, suddenly that statistic has meaning and it’s humanized.

Why were you drawn to this particular issue?

Because I eat fruits and vegetables. You don’t have to be a farmer to fight for farmworker rights — it’s called compassion. This is one issue that I heard about early on in my activism and I thought this affects everybody. Were you surprised to learn that these practices take place in America?

Absolutely. America has some of the strictest import/export laws, but yet we allow [this] to happen in our own country, and it’s a little hypocritical. The laws protect the big businesses because these are not family farms anymore. These laws only give the economic advantage to big corporations, and big corporations use lobbyists to say the cost will pass on to the consumer. Therefore, the legislation and the policy doesn’t change because of these strong agro-business lobbyists, who will pass any kind of increase in salary or wages on to the consumer. That’s not fair. Tonight, get ‘LA Ink’ed This ‘LA Ink’ co-star is still figuring out how to be on camera TLC’s “LA Ink” has been on hiatus for almost eight months and cast member Corey Miller has been using his time away from production to catch up with his loved ones and work on his own L.A.-based business Six Feet Under, a hybrid tattoo parlor and store which sells his artwork and designs. “I’m really happy to be back home spending time with my family, especially the kids. I bring them to school every morning but I just can’t do that when I’m filming,” Miller says. “Now I’m expanding my own business and attending to my own clients away from the stress of the camera.”

While being a reality TV star was never an easy job for the reluctant Miller (he famously walked out at the end of the first half of Season 4, a dramatic departure which he says was totally unscripted), he admits that being on the show does have some perks. “I was a little wary and guarded as I was not sure if I could be myself on TV,” Miller remembers. “But at the end of the day, my work is being recognized and it is this nationwide recognition that makes it very exciting.” NICHOLAS LIM letters@metro.us

A Jedi of the sci-fi Joe Cornish

Since its debut at the SXSW Film Festival in March, writer/director Joe Cornish’s indie sci-fi “Attack the Blockâ€? has won a steady stream of audience awards and rave reviews. It’s a reception Cornish doesn’t take lightly. “I think the combined power of the Internet and bloggers is just as powerful as any marketing machine, I hope,â€? he says. He sat down with Metro to talk about the film, which is set for a broader national release. Why do you think the British council estate continues to be such fertile ground for ďŹ lm and TV?

Those places were built in a spirit of great optimism after the war. They replaced lots of slums and they were seen as sort of futuristic, exciting, utopian housing projects. In the years that have passed, they’ve kind

And they’ve been used in films, certainly, for quite downbeat, depressing narratives. My film was an attempt to actually take it back to that futuristic aesthetic. The heroes of the movie start out as petty criminals, but you end up sympathizing with them.

I didn’t realize you had to rewrite to budget. I was reading that amazing “Making of ‘Star Wars’ book. If there’s one thing I’m learning from directors of big-budget films, it’s that the problems are the same.

Reasons to go to the movies

Must-see

1

‘The Change-Up’ Body-switching comedies come around oh, every three years or so, but this one starring Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds might be one of the first to offer plenty of hilarious raunch along the way.

8

‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Rather than a remake of the 1960s classic or the early aughts disaster, this “Apes” film shows the origins of a global primate takeover, co-starring James Franco and Freida Pinto. ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ Ryan Gosling goes against type as a super-smooth womanizer, while Steve Carell does anything but as a clumsy, newly-single suburban dad.

4

‘Friends With Benefits’ Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis attempt to make work what absolutely no one else in the history of predictable romcoms has been able to. At least they’ll look hot doing it.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’ You may have heard about this little sleeper hit. The final installment of the franchise pits Potter against his lifelong nemesis, the creepily noseless Lord Voldemort.

‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig face off in this scifi/western mash-up. Somehow not convinced? Olivia Wilde plays their damsel in distress.

‘Winnie the Pooh’ No 3-D, no computer animation, just a purely delightful little film starring some old friends in the charming Hundred Acre Wood.

5

10

‘The Smurfs’ Katy Perry lends her voice to Smurfette and Neil Patrick Harris plays a reluctant Smurf host in the live action/CGI take on the cartoon.

6

‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Chris Evans puts his square jaw to use as the Marvel Comics hero.

Nothing left to change The recent circus of raising the debt ceiling was accomplished with smoke and mirrors. Our military is going to be neutered in an era of rising Chinese economic and military strength while the floodgates of illegals remains open. JEFF HURLEY, VIA E-MAIL,

I find it utterly unconscionable that two agenda items that normally pass as a matter of course were used as poker chips — the debt ceiling raise and the FAA authorization continuing resolution. Though default was narrowly averted at great national cost, a crushing blow to the construction industry was dealt due to the epic failure concerning the FAA. Not only were 4,000+ FAA employees furloughed, but number of stop-work orders to engineering and construction contractors, most likely soon to be including my company’s program, grows daily. The madness must stop. It cannot wait for Congress to come back from vacation.

t’s hot out there and barbecues are overrated. Stay indoors and play video games. Every summer, Microsoft releases a cadre of downloadable titles for their Xbox Live platform. We check out two of the five games that make up the “Summer of Arcade.” ‘From Dust’

Publisher: Ubisoft Cost: $15 Grade:

Ever since “Populous” graced PCs in the late 80s, titles where we role-play as God have entertained gamers the world over.

“Bastion” is “very nearly the world’s most perfect” role-playing game.

There’s just something cool about guiding those simple tribal folk to enlightenment. Enter “From Dust,” one of the more unique God games on the block. First of all, you are not omniscient. You only control the land. This means you’ll be spending time

protecting your citizens from floods, fires and whatever else plagued our silly ancestors. The game also wisely places emphasis on cultivation. The more vegetation you spread across a map, the more wildlife and skills your villagers acquire. Watch out, though. Later

“Bastion” is very nearly the world’s most perfect action RPG. There are so many weapons and items to upgrade it’ll make even the most OCD-stricken among us jump for joy. The controls are tight and fluid, feeling more like a 2-D Zelda title than your traditional hack-and-slash. The game features an omnipresent narrator, who comments on just about everything. The world can seem a mite claustrophobic, however. It would benefit from a few more branching paths. Still — for RPG fans, there’s no better place to drop 15 bucks.

Tom Moore:Armchair consultant DAVID DRAPKIN/GETTY IMAGES

Tom Moore built the offense Peyton Manning ran for his entire career with the Colts.

Architect of Peyton Manning’s Colts offense brings eye to Jets Sees lots of potential in offense, Sanchez

The Jets’ secret weapon this season certainly won’t be Plaxico Burress or Santonio Holmes. Chances are, the biggest addition to the offense will be sitting in his South Carolina home for much of this year, watching the game on television. Meet Tom Moore, who will literally be the team's armchair quarterback — well, armchair consultant. For over a dozen years, Moore was the offensive coordinator of the high-powered Colts offense — one of the most dynamic passing attacks in NFL history. Moore is credited with being the mastermind behind quarterback Peyton Manning’s ability to rewrite the record books Moore retired at the end of last year and this past

“It doesn’t get much better than having Tom Moore sitting in that room with you.” REX RYAN, JETS HEAD COACH

June joined the Jets as a consultant to the offense. “I’d known Rex for a long time, having competed against him. I have great respect for him,” Moore told Metro. “This spring, (offen-

sive line coach) [Bill] Callahan called me and asked me if I’d be interested in consulting. I came up for a couple days and I’m here now.” He’s “here now,” but that may not last too long. Moore’s role with the team is strictly as a consultant — and while he will be present during training camp, he won’t be actively engaged in game-planning on a weekly basis. Moore sees plenty of potential from the offense and quarterback Mark Sanchez. “Sanchez is special, the kid is just special,” Moore said. “He’s won a lot of game in this league the past two years and he’s now really starting to grow.”

You know we love a bizarre arrest story, so here’s one that emerged last week from Las Vegas. Samaki Walker, a former NBA lottery pick who starred at Louisville, was pulled over by police in a routine traffic stop. Then, it gets fun..

Ain’t no party like an SEC party ‘cause ...

The Princeton Review put out its annual list of the nation’s “Top 20 Party Schools.” While I haven’t picked up a copy of the magazine to break down the criteria, a few things stand out (get out your pad and pen, high schoolers): SEC rules. Not only are they superior at football, but five of the top 20 party schools in the country are in the Southeastern Conference (Georgia, No. 2; Ole Miss No. 3; Florida, No. 9; LSU, No. 13; South Carolina No. 20). What do they have against the West Coast?

Other than UCSB and Arizona State, do they not party west of the Mississippi? And no love for the Northeast? Only Syracuse

(No.12) and Vermont (No. 19) made the list. And I’m not counting Penn State as the Northeast, since it’s closer to Pittsburgh than Philly. – Jason Raj McIntyre covers athletes off the field and runs the popular blog, The Big Lead. Mets’ playoff hopes being thrown away Playoff aspirations can dissipate in the sweltering August humidity. Even for a team on the playoff periphery.

It is why Terry Collins felt compelled to speak to his team after Tuesday night’s 4-3 loss to division rival Florida in which

Justin Turner’s mental and physical error in the ninth inning allowed the Marlins to score two runs. Florida has won the first two games of the series and the Mets are back at .500 (5555). “They have to know I care. This isn’t a joke. These games count. Winning is what we’re supposed to do,” Collins said before last night’s series

finale. “These guys take this stuff personally. They have to. This is who they are. They’re frustrated, especially when they cost the team a win. They like each other so much, it’s like they let down everybody. One thing about Justin Turner is that he’ll get over it.” DENIS GORMAN letters@metro.us
