Triathlon Jail for cop who cuddled woman safety concerns Ex-NYPD officer Kenneth Moreno leaves Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday after he was sentenced to one year in prison for an official misconduct conviction.
A former New York City police officer who was acquitted of rape charges but found guilty of official misconduct — he admitted he cuddled with a naked, drunken woman who had called him and his partner for help — was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday. He’s out on bail for now, but law enforcement experts warn he better be careful when he enters Rikers. {page 02}

Maid hits Strauss-Kahn with civil suit GETTY IMAGES
The maid accusing former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault filed a civil lawsuit against him yesterday. The lawsuit, which follows criminal charges against the Frenchman, repeats the version of events that the woman who ac-
cused him has told. “Believing he was immune from the laws of this country, defendant StraussKahn intentionally, brutally and violently sexually assaulted her and in the process humiliated, degraded, violated and robbed her of her dignity as a woman,”
according to the complaint, which does not seek specific damages. Lawyers for StraussKahn, 62, said that the civil suit shows his accuser is motivated by money. The maid says she will give evidence that StraussKahn harassed and assault-

Ex-cop faces tough reception in lockup Kenneth Moreno acquitted for rape but sentenced to one year in jail for official misconduct Admitted to cuddling with drunk woman in her bed EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN/METRO
Disgraced ex-NYPD officer Kenneth Moreno received a brutal tongue-lashing from a Manhattan Supreme Court judge yesterday when he was sentenced to one year in jail — and he’ll face an even tougher crowd when he arrives at Rikers. Moreno, acquitted of raping a woman who called him for help, was hit with a surprise one-year jail term yesterday for misconduct charges stemming from his return to the woman’s apartment while on duty. He was freed late yesterday afternoon on a $125,000-bail pending an appeal of his sentence. His high-powered defense attorney Joe Tacopina begged the judge for lastminute leniency. “Certainly everyone knows the potential dangers that befall a police officer in the criminal justice system,” pleaded Tacopina. But Judge Gregory Carro would hear none of it. “You’ve undermined the role of other police officers who have to do a tough job in this city,” said Carro to Moreno. It’s no secret cops are indeed targeted in jail, former NYPD officer Mike Codella said. “The minute you’re in the joint everybody knows that there’s a cop in there,” he said. To other prisoners, attacking a police officer is “kind of like a feather in
ed other women in the past. The assault “left her life and her young daughter’s life in shambles,” the suit reads. It alleges physical, emotional and psychological injuries and seeks compensatory and punitive damages, along with attorneys’ fees. REUTERS
WHAT DO YOU THINK? WWW.METRO.US/NYC IS A ONE-YEAR SENTENCE ADEQUATE? WILL MORENO HAVE TO WATCH HIS BACK?
Harsher sentence for cops Carro deemed that Moreno’s status as a former police officer actually warranted a tougher sentence. “Your attorney said you should be treated like any other defendant, but the law treats police officers differently because of their role. Crimes against police officers are treated more severely than crimes against civilians,” he said. “If you kill a police officer, it’s murder one. If you kill Joe Smith, it’s murder two.” METRO/AB
Guards won’t be watching A Manhattan Supreme Court judge dismissed the notion that Kenneth Moreno, center, didn’t know what he was doing. He’s a “simpleton like a fox,” said Judge Gregory Carro.

your cap.” Even though Moreno would be under protective custody in jail — taking his
meals and outdoor time at separate times than the other prisoners — he’s still not safe, said Codella. “You still bump into (other prisoners) and they still see you,” he said. And because Moreno was accused of rape, jail will be “doubly dangerous,” said Richard Lichten, a former Los Angeles County Sher-
iff’s Department officer and a jail violence expert. “It’s one thing going to jail as a former police officer,” Lichten said. “But inmates in jail do not like other inmates who are in there for crimes against women.” ALISON BOWEN
alison.bowen@metro.us
Moreno can’t even expect jail guards to watch out for him, warned Codella. “Most people are under the impression these guys are guilty. The corrections officers are not going to treat them especially nice,” he said. “They’re not going to go out of their way to do them any favors.” Moreno was kicked off the force after his conviction. More than 775 “lost property” reports were filed in the first half of 2010 and there were only 518 “lost property” cases filed during the first half of 2011, numbers that could make up for the difference between larceny reports year to year. With two dead, safety overhaul asked of race Second person dies after participating in triathlon Official asks: Why have the race in hottest month? A second person died yesterday morning after participating in the Nautica New York City Triathlon, prompting at least one city official to demand a safety overview of the grueling athletic event. A 40-year-old Illinois woman was pulled out of the Hudson River during the swimming portion of the race Sunday. It is believed she went into cardiac arrest twice, during and after the 1.5 kilometer swim.
“New Yorkers signed up for a triathlon — not a game of Russian roulette.” MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT SCOTT STRINGER
She was hospitalized and died yesterday morning. Her death comes after a 64-year-old man died Sunday, also during the swim. Michael Kudryk, of Freehold, N.J., was pulled out
of the Hudson River unconscious and is thought to have died from a heart attack. “This is horrifying,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer when news of the second fatality broke. “We can’t ignore this.” Stringer is demanding race organizers do a “top-tobottom” review of the competition’s safety protocol. He also questioned the decision to go ahead with
Triathlon participants swim 1.5 kilometers in the Hudson River, then bike 40 kilometers along the West Side Highway and run 10 kilometers through Central Park.
Overcome: 26 other race participants needed assistance for minor injuries or pains during Sunday’s swim, according to Stringer. During the 2010 race, with temps around 90 degrees, a London man collapsed near the finish line. A 32-year-old Buenos Aires man died in the race in 2008, when temperatures were above 90.
Sunday’s race despite the muggy conditions. “The heat may have contributed to this,” said Stringer. “We need to review whether this triathlon is taking place in the appropriate month. Would it be smart to move it to the spring or the fall?” But Triathlon director Bill Burke said the triathlons are usually held in the summer because that’s when Hudson River currents flow with -— not
against -— the swimmers. That’s also when the river is warmest. “It starts in the early morning during the coolest part of the day,” said Burke, adding that when the race started, both the air and water temperatures were in the 70s. But Burke did not say he would do a nuts-to-bolts safety review. CARLY BALDWIN

US market tanks in first day of trading since credit rating downgraded Plunging prices a sword over economy Obama tries to reassure country
Plunging stock prices in the wake of Standard & Poor’s decision to strip the United States’ top-tier AAA credit rating may threaten consumer confidence and could push the frail economy into recession. While analysts say the direct impact on the economy from the credit rating downgrade itself is limited, a sustained drop in share prices would have a negative impact on wealth — and likely force both consumers and businesses to hunker down. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity

What happened? Credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s lowered the U.S. government’s credit rating. That affects long-term debt, which means government securities that have terms of more than one year. Why? S&P blamed political deadlock in Washington that threatens to keep the country from dealing effectively with its debt. What it means for markets and the economy: The fear is that the downgrade will add to building uncertainty in the stock market over Europe’s debt crisis and evidence the U.S. economy is weakening. Rates on Treasury bonds also influence rates consumers pay on everything from mortgages to auto loans. A rise in Treasury rates would send those rates higher. MAINSTREET.COM
and analysts at Albion Financial Group estimate the domestic stock market has dropped by about 14 percent since July 25, wiping off $1.93 trillion. “This massive move in the equity market does dim the economic outlook for the next six months, said Carl Riccadonna, senior U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank in New York. “We would put the recession odds at about 40 percent, and about two weeks ago they were at about a 10 percent chance. U.S. and global shares have come under relentless
selling pressure since late July as investors took a dim view of a nasty fight in Washington over raising the country’s debt ceiling and a string of weak economic data around the world. Adding to the stock market’s woes, S&P on Friday cut the long-term U.S. credit rating by one notch to AA-plus on concerns about the government’s budget deficit and rising debt burden. Stocks on Wall Street tumbled more than 5 percent on Monday, their worst day since December 2008 during the worst of the banking crisis. REUTERS

The Perfect Weekend Getaway
My best friends and I have almost nothing in common. I’m a total Type A adrenaline junkie. Katie
is laid back and loves to be pampered. And Claire just wants to party all the time. But somehow all of our differences are what make us so great together. Except when it comes to taking a vacation. Every year we’ve tried to ďŹ nd the perfect trip for all three of us, where I can be active and adventurous, Katie can work on her tan and Claire can dance till dawn. But somebody always ended up bored. Just as we were about to give up, I found the vacation we were looking for in Club Getaway, a “Summer Camp for GrownUpsâ€?. We called and made a reservation for the following weekend.

Katie, Claire and I met up in Manhattan the following Friday to hop on the 90-minute chartered bus ride to Club Getaway, in the Berkshire Mountains. Half of the people on the bus were Club Getaway regulars and the other half were newbies like us.

Obama: We’re still an AAA country President Barack Obama yesterday blamed a downgrade in the United States’ credit rating on political gridlock in Washington and said he would offer some recommendations on how to reduce federal deficits. Obama stopped short of sharp criticism of Standard & Poor’s for its downgrade of U.S. debt to AA-plus from AAA on Friday. Senior administration officials have accused S&P of going ahead with the downgrade despite a $2 trillion mathematical error.

At Club Getaway I took lessons in rock climbing and the ying trapeze, went mountain biking and even learned to water ski. Rocking the doc
Morgan Spurlock on his five-part series about the best documentaries of all time Why the filmmaker wasn’t smart enough to pick the films COURTESY OF CURRENT TV
Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock puts his hosting hat on for “50 Documentaries to See before You Die,” a Current TV series which premiered last week. Spurlock hits the road to examine the most interesting, influential and controversial non-fiction films in recent history. But first, he talked to Metro about how the 50 were chosen.
INDULGE IN
FIRE
Did you have any input about which films were included on the show?
I had no say whatsoever. That was the whole thing, I got zero input. I was basically told, “We had real geniuses do this list, not you.” So all I got to do was relay the information that much smarter people than me came up with. Did you find yourself agreeing with what they picked?
Yeah. I think most people when they watch the special, there are going to be a lot of films that they agree with, there will be some films that, like me, they’ll go, “How can that not be on

the list? How can this film not be on the list?” But I think overall people are going to be really excited by it. What were some of your favorite moments that we’ll see?
For me, just traveling around and meeting some of these people that are
kind of these film icons. You know, meeting the kids, who are now all grown up, from “Hoop Dreams.” Meeting Mr. Brainwash — incredible. Meeting the young preacher from “Jesus Camp,” who still lives in Missouri and is about to go to college. You know, to see these people in real life after you’ve seen them in films is pretty spectacular. Do you see this as part of an
effort to bring documentaries to more of a mainstream audience?
Yeah, I think that’s one of the things that I was excited by about the show. I think this will continue that dialogue, an examination of docs, the impact they have, how important they are in our society. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Things to know about ‘Deputy Butterbean’
YOU AND A GUEST ARE INVITED TO AN ADVANCE SCREENING
Live from TCA press tour: Eric Esch, a 416-pound professional fighter, looks to knock out crime on Investigation Discovery’s ‘Big Law: Deputy Butterbean’ INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY
Eric “Butterbean” Esch, left, and Deputy Adam Hadder star in “Big Law: Deputy Butterbean,” premiering Aug. 9 at 10 p.m. on Investigation Discovery.
This isn’t ‘Steven Seagal: Lawman’ Esch, who goes by “Butterbean” or “Bean,” was deputized about a year and a half before cameras came to Walker County, Ala., where he serves as a reserve deputy sheriff. “I did this because it’s my hometown,” he says, insisting the law enforcement job isn’t a reality TV stunt. “I live there,” he explains. “I have kids that have to grow up. I have grandkids there.
THE TELEVISION CRITICS ASSOCIATION PRESS TOUR, A MEETING OF JOURNALISTS AND NETWORKS TO PREVIEW NEW AND RETURNING SERIES, KICKED OFF WEDNESDAY. FOLLOW OUR COVERAGE ONLINE AT WWW.METRO.US/TV AND ON TWITTER: @AMBERATMETRO.
The reason I started helping Adam [Hadder, Butterbean’s best friend and partner on the force] in the drug unit is because I want to make it a better place, get rid of a lot of the drugs. If I can make a little bit of change in the town that I live in, OK.”
He may be a former super heavyweight boxing champion, but he doesn’t want to fight you “I’m a levelheaded guy,” says Butterbean. “The fighters that have problems [with people wanting to pick fights] are the ones with the big egos. I mean, I use my brain. Your brain is what controls everything. You can talk to people like they’re human beings and don’t try to bully them around. Sometimes you have to use force. But use logic with them, then they
work pretty well.”
But he is actually fighting crime When asked about the most dangerous situation he had gotten into, Butterbean cited house entries. “Being a vice and narcotics unit, we do a lot of search warrants [and] highrisk entries. And, of course, that’s always pretty dangerous,” says Deputy Hadder. “We actually got in a car chase during an episode, and that’s never that fun.” “The crazy thing,” adds Butterbean, “is I wasn’t afraid because I have a great team and they trained me well and I really had confidence in them. And hopefully they had enough confidence in me, which I’m sure they did or they wouldn’t let me be there.” AMBER RAY

Rescued from the book graveyard
An author is receiving an unexpected second chance this summer after being out of print for nearly 20 years The rare story of ‘Tony and Susan’
Wright, pictured right, was an English professor at the University of Cincinnati and author of seven novels, all of which fell out of print. Eight years after his death, his masterpiece, “Tony and Susan,” is being reissued to worldwide acclaim.
In the news
Writer? It’s time to explore Book Country Most how-to books on the creative process tell writers to stay far away from the time-suck that is the Internet. But Book
Austin Wright is having a year most authors can only dream of. Not only is his book, “Tony and Susan,” a best-seller in Britain, but this week, a major U.S. publisher is publishing the work in the states with a printing of 10,000 copies in hardcover. Too bad he’s not around to witness it: Wright died in 2003 at the age of 80. Here is the very odd backstory to “Tony and Susan”: The thriller was first released in 1993 to a small publishing house. It garnered critical acclaim, but
The plot So why did all of these editors fawn over “Tony and Susan” enough to resurrect it? Because it’s just so good. Set up as a novel-within-anovel, “Tony and Susan” follows Susan Morrow, a mild-mannered college teacher, as she reads a manuscript her ex-husband mails her, a chilling thriller of murder and revenge.
it failed to gain traction with readers. However, over in England, editor Ravi Mirchandani, who read the original manuscript two decades ago, just couldn’t forget it. So he decided to investigate what happened to “Tony and Susan” and discovered the book was out of print. The staff at his publishing house loved it, they acquired the rights to it and went on to sell worldwide rights in 15 languages. “I’ve never had this happen,” says Jamie Raab, Publisher of Grand Central, who bought the rights for
U.S. publication for its re-release. “I read the book and thought it was amazing. I wanted to be a part of introducing it to a much larger audience.” Raab knows the whole tale is bittersweet. “Unfortunately, [Wright] is not around to appreciate it and to enjoy its success,” says Raab. “But it’s just a seamless book and works on so many levels. I just had to try to get it out there.”

moderated. And reviews by established members will weigh more than reviews by newer members,” Barton says. “This way, a writer cannot ask his friends to give his own work a raving review. This maintains the integrity of our website.”

class act
Tyne Daly and Maria Callas are a masterful pairing in Terrence McNally’s play about an acclaimed operatic soprano’s time teaching at Juilliard If you go ‘Master Class’ Through Sept. 4 Samuel J. Friedman Theater, 261 W. 47th St. $57-$116; 212-239-6200 www.mtc-nyc.org
liard in the 1970s — although this show is not based on a literal recount of those seminars. Instead, Tony- and Emmy-winner Tyne Daly brilliantly embodies a fictional interpretation of the worldrenowned songstress at the cusp of her career. She regally lectures the audience, speaking to them directly as if they’re the aspiring singers in attendance who are eagerly begging for insight into Callas’ success and indefinable essence. Breaking the fourth wall from her first words, Daly wraps theatergoers around her finger and never lets them go — despite a tendency to insult and berate
Callas (Tyne Daly), right, critiques a singing student (Sierra Boggess) in “Master Class.”
as she dares them to take major risks if they even dream of approaching her levels of fortune and fame. The structure of the play is divided between three students who perform pieces for Callas to critique. Each actor performs stirring renditions of classic operatic works — often taking the audience out of the story for a few minutes to simply sit enthralled at the beauty of each voice — until Callas inevitably inter-
rupts with insecurity-inspired criticism and self-aggrandizing anecdotes. Other characters include an infatuated accompanist (Jeremy Cohen) and a handyman (Clinton Brandhagen), who respectively bolster and undercut Callas’ lofty projections of selfworth to summarize her internal struggle for validation. Director Stephen Wadsworth makes the most of simplicity onstage, with the busiest elements being
the mere removal of set pieces as Callas disappears into memories of her glory days with La Scala and lover Aristotle Onassis. “Master Class” is a riveting work that teaches not only performance, but the psychology of stardom; whether you’re previously a fan of Maria Callas or not, it’s worth attending to witness Daly at her best. Leon on collaborating You’ve done a lot of collaborations. Has this been the most intense?
“With this one, the challenge that was so exciting for me was I wanted every piece to be as exciting as the next. And I wanted each piece to have value. In my mind, when I buy a Margiela piece that’s what it means to me — it’s the value of each garment. I think when you look at this collection, each piece has that value.”

ast Fashion Week, editors raised their prosecco glasses at the news of a collaboration between Opening Ceremony, purveyors of downtown cool, and MM6 Maison Martin Margiela, the sister brand to the main label created by enigmatic fashion rock star Martin Margiela. The collection, which hit stores last week, is completely in line with Maison’s heady design philosophy, including the “idea of recuperation, transformation and reinterpretation.” Translation: The line consists of 20 separates — with a twist. Based on a three-in-one concept, most items play double duty, expanding your wardrobe without adding more clutter. Unfasten the lining of a jacket and you have another; with a slight tug, boots can be worn as kneehighs or ankle. We sat down with Humberto Leon, co-founder of Opening Ceremony, and Renzo Rosso, president of Only the Brave (who in 2002 became a majority shareholder of Maison Martin Margiela) to find out how your new travel wardrobe came together. Whose genius idea was it for this collaboration? Leon: “I approached them
saying I wanted to work on something with the Maison. We do this thing where we feature countries every year, and we decided to feature France. The Maison is based in Paris and it seemed like a perfect fit. I

what they were doing and I said, ‘Wow that’s great.’ It started with this guy.” How exactly did the creative process work? Rosso: “We give it to our de-
signers, the input, of what we wanted to do, they came up with the design. After, we showed it to the Opening Ceremony people
and they put their own vision. They said, ‘This is not good, this can be fantastic.’ It was really two teams working together and I think this is why the result is very unique.” Leon: “They came to us and said, ‘What do you love about MM6?’ and we gave them all the key points.”

transformation, this idea of the item being more than what it actually is. I think the Maison is always very intellectual, but in a very beautiful way. We wanted to celebrate all of those different points.” Rosso: “And we chose MM6 because the line is more open, more friendly, more unique and very wearable. We wanted to give MM6 visibility so it becomes more well known. With the 6 also we can [show] the wearability of Margiela with Opening Ceremony. What are your favorite pieces? Leon: “The outerwear is my
favorite. It’s so versatile. We are presenting it for the fall collection, but I think you can wear this all year. I think there is something so special about having clothing that is so multipurpose; I feel if you pack one piece, you could have four outfits. For traveling, that’s amazing. It feels really modern.” Rosso: “The jacket is so beautiful, but the whole collection is terrific.” Is this a one-time romance or are you guys going to keep it going? Leon: “I think this is the be-
ginning of something.” Rosso: “Now that it’s so beautiful, let’s see.” TINA CHADHA

Another debt crisis solution Tax refunds and Social Security are taken from paychecks earned by workers. The real debt solution is balance: cuts with revenue. But the Tea Party applies “Taxed Enough Already” only to the richest 5 percent of the population, not the middle class, so we have cuts without revenue, and none for the rich. It’s doubly unbalanced. I have two better ideas: 1) The Americans-First Tax: For every job Big Business outsources overseas (which is “unpatriotic”), tax them triple an
American’s salary plus all benefits. 2) The Giffords Tax: raise taxes on guns, bullets, clips, magazines, etc., but make gun safety devices and smart-gun technology tax-free. J. ANDREW SMITH, BLOOMFIELD, NJ

you raise the debt ceiling. To add insult to injury, Congress has adjorned for the rest of August while the crisis continues.
At the end of the day, we will increase our long term debt from $14 trillion to $16 trillion over the next two years. The president and Congress can only identify modest cuts in the billions. They punted by setting up another joint House/Senate congressional committee to come up with more cuts later. Significant real cuts in spending have been put off until 2016. The simple answer to the budget crises would have been a return to 2008 spending levels. This should have been followed by a one for one basis; cut a dollar in direct spending for every dollar
Leo July 23-Aug. 22. If you are self-assured and persistent about whatever it is you take on, this can be a productive day for you. Should you encounter any resistance, push the pedal to the metal. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Unless you follow through on whatever opportunities are available to you, regardless of how small or large they might be, you won't be successful. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Just because your first effort fizzles, you shouldn't give up too easily. If you're ready to keep up the effort, your probabilities for success will be greatly enhanced. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Blame it on the reign I can’t conceive what voters were thinking last year when they elected the current crop of Republican freshmen to Congress, most of whom were spouting nonsense throughout the campaign season and proving ignorant of basic civics. Anyone who complains about “Washington” being broken can look to the Tea Party Republicans and their supporters, first and foremost. The sooner they’re out of office, the better for the rest of us.

Nantucket may be packed with people all summer, but there are places you can go to get away
Don’t miss this! If you visit the island before the end of the month, you need to see artist Tom Deininger’s display at the Gallery at Four India. This self-portrait does not do justice to the genius of this Rhode Island-based artist. See, this is not a painting. This is a carefully assembled threedimensional hodge podge of baby dolls, sneakers, cassette tapes and discarded electronics. Amazing!

The quintessential Nantucket cottage COURTESY OF UNION STREET INN
Speaking of unexpected, the Nantucket Whaling Museum has taken what could have been an embarrassing relic of a cruel and outdated economic engine and turned it into an informative and entertaining experience. The island has come to terms with its whaling past and details it with multimedia presentations, weapon demonstrations and lively live narration about how before the island transitioned into tourism, it was for a brief time the center of the world. This is all done underneath a gigantic whale skeleton.

If there is any part of your journey to Nantucket that is a “how the other half live” exploration, then you need to do the 20minute bluff walk in Siasconset. Stretching along the elbow of the island, the path literally takes you through the backyards of some of the most beautiful homes on the island, preceded by the quintessentially quaint Nantucket cottages on Front Street.

IS IT THE END? Posada benched, with no guarantee for a return to lineup Has the Core Four become the Core Two? The final steps toward the end of Jorge Posada’s career began during the offseason when he was told not to worry about catching anymore. The acceleration towards the finish line came Sunday in Boston when manager Joe Girardi said he was going to put the best lineup on the field. “Joe told me today that he’s going to put the best team on the field, and I’m not in the lineup as the DH,” Posada told reporters. “I’m not happy about it, but I put myself in this situation, and all I can do is keep working and trying.” That means for the remaining 49 games, Posada is reduced to a spectator and occasional pinch hitter. It was the second time this year that a subtle reminder of Posada’s decline

Teammate Curtis Granderson has 24 runs batted in over that same span. was delivered before a nationally televised game against the Red Sox. The first came May 14, a Saturday night FOX game, when Posada refused to bat ninth for the first time in 12 years and took himself out of the lineup. Posada was hitting .165 and was hitless against lefties. A .382 average in June lifted him to .240 on the season and kept him in the lineup. But over his last 26 games Posada is batting .205 (16-for-78) with four
RBIs and three extra-base hits. Sunday the Yankees finally determined they had seen enough unproductive at-bats. "We're going to see how this works," Girardi told reporters in Boston. "We're going to try some different things. We'll see how this works, and I told Jorge, ‘You're still going to be a big part of this, and we're going to need you. We're just going to do some different things.'" Until Alex Rodriguez returns from the DL, Eric Chavez will fill the role against right-handed pitching and Andruw Jones will be used against lefthanded pitching. After Rodriguez returns, the spot could be used to give regulars a half day.
Posada may be in his final months as a Yankee.

Sanchez: Our defense is just as good as ’85 Bears squad ANDY LYONS/GETTY IMAGES

faces every day in practice to the vaunted Bears unit from their 1985 Super Bowl team. That defense was put together by Buddy Ryan, the father of current Jets head coach Rex Ryan. It was a defense that was all offense for the Bears with Buddy Ryan’s ‘46 defense’ blitzing through any number of gaps and willing to take risks to get to the quarterback. The 1985 Bears finished with the top-ranked defense in the league, ending the year with an emphatic 46-10 win over New England in the Super Bowl. After two seasons under Rex Ryan, the Jets see big things from this defense as well. “We have been in the same system and whenever you have that, you can take leaps and bounds,” linebacker Bart Scott said. “It doesn’t take too long to really get back in the

Murphy’s season is done The news was not as devastating as the Mets initially feared, but the end result is the same. Daniel Murphy’s season is over and Jose Reyes will not play for the next two weeks. Murphy suffered a sprain of his left MCL and will miss the remainder of the season, while Reyes was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring. Both injuries occurred in Sunday’s loss to the Braves. Reyes left the game in the bottom of the second after pulling up going into first trying to beat out an infield single the previous inning. Murphy injured his knee when Jose Constanza slid into second. His
year ends with a .318 average — fifth in the NL. He switched between first, second, third and left field, and there will be internal discussions regarding which position he is best suited for. Terry Collins said outfield might have to be considered, but GM Sandy Alderson was unwilling to eliminate second base. “I don’t know if playing second base has any causal relationship to injuries,” Alderson said. It is the second time in as many years Murphy has had a serious knee injury. He tore the MCL in his right knee during a minor league game last year. “I know how this story ends,” Murphy said. “This injury isn’t as severe. I know I’ll be back.” Ruben Tejada and Mike Baxter were promoted from Triple-A. DENIS GORMAN
