Vento: ‘Hard-headed’ but ‘great boss’ JOSEPH KACZMAREK/METRO
When Joey Vento had a scare last year with colorectal cancer, “he never missed a day of work. Came out of the hospital Saturday and came back to work on Monday,” family friend Joey “Pony” Amato said yesterday at Vento’s world-famous Geno’s Steaks.
The cheesesteak baron, who died Tuesday from a massive heart attack at age 71, remained as hardworking as he was controversial in recent years. “He was a hard-headed bastard,” Amato said. “Came in to work at 4 a.m. till 11 a.m. the day he died.
Never told anyone how he was feeling.” Vento opened Geno’s in 1966 across from Pat’s King of Steaks. He was known for his support of conservative causes and the city police department. The Independence Hall Tea Party Association yesterday called
him “a great friend of the conservative cause and the Tea Party movement.” “I was a costumer when he opened in 1966, and I worked here as soon as I was old enough,” Geno’s manager Jimmy Reds said. “He was a great boss.”

Reading Viaduct park finally rising Conversion of abandoned, elevated railroad in Callowhill gains traction Oversight group created Design firm has received William Penn grant RIKARD LARMA/METRO
After nearly a decade of speculation surrounding its future, the Reading Viaduct is finally seeing signs of life. “I’m enthusiastic about the way things have been going lately, especially with the opening of [New York City’s] High Line park,” said John Struble of the Reading Viaduct Project. “More people are seeing what you can do with an old railroad, so there’s a lot of movement.” The Center City District secured grant funding two weeks ago to conduct a schematic study of the viaduct’s SEPTA-owned portion, which stretches from Callowhill to 13th streets. “It’s a place everyone has been so anxious for years to see become the neighborhood green space,” said Bryan Haynes, whose design firm is conducting the study. “This neighborhood is really lacking in any kind of parks or open spaces.” Haynes is in the process

The renovation of the SEPTA spur is expected to be completed by 2013 at the earliest and will cost between $3 million and $5 million, most of which will be funded by grants. Raising park cash The designation of the Callowhill Reading Viaduct Neighborhood Improvement District, sponsored by Councilman Frank DiCicco, will create an organization that can raise funds by taxing residents within its boundaries and applying for grant money. “The genesis of the CRVNID is twofold,” said Paul Levy of the Center City District. “The first phase is to help the neighborhood itself with

inspections are recommended for passengers who traveled on an Amtrak train from Boston to Virginia last week. The Virginia Department of health recently released a statement that a man infected with measles boarded Amtrak Northeast Regional No. 171 in Philadelphia on Aug. 17. The VDH said those who left the train before its arrival in Philadelphia should not be concerned. METRO/YD

SEPTA takes fare overhaul to riders Wants to know what riders think Agency unsure best way for new technology on widespread rail system With questions still remaining about how SEPTA’s new fare system will look on Regional Rail lines, an advisory group has recommended a two-way gated system that would require riders to pay entering and leaving five stations in Center City. SEPTA expects to award a contract for its new smart-card system in the fall. The system, which will eliminate tokens and paper transfers, will be straightforward for buses, trolleys and subways — but SEPTA hopes to make the Regional Rail structure more uniform and convenient. Under the current proposals, Regional Rail

riders would either pay when leaving Center City or they would pay leaving and entering. The advisory group says the one-way system would cause confusion and allow for fare evasion. It also suggests reducing the number
of fare zones from the current six to three. Conductors would handle payment from riders who do not board or get off in Center City. Riders can voice their opinion by visiting www.septa.org/npt and taking a brief survey for the next few weeks. John McGee, SEPTA’s chief officer of New Payment Technology, said the two-way system would cost about $3 million — but that SEPTA is still open to all ideas. “The more information we collect, the better it is,” McGee said. Leader urges Libyan loyalists to continue battling Civilians hoping violence will end soon White House: Gaddafi’s reign nearly done Libya’s new masters offered a million-dollar bounty for the fugitive Muammar Gaddafi yesterday, after he urged his men to fight on in battles across the capital. A day after rebel forces overran his Tripoli headquarters and trashed symbols of his 42-year rule, scattered pockets of loyalist diehards kept the irregular fighters at bay as they hunted Gaddafi and his sons. Rebels also reported fighting deep in the desert and a standoff around Gaddafi’s tribal home town. In Tripoli, rockets and gunfire kept 2 million civilians indoors. Most were anxious but hopeful the war would soon end — and with it, worsening shortages of food, water and medical supplies for hundreds of wounded and for the sick. “Gaddafi’s forces and his accomplices will not
On his way out The White House said yesterday there was no sign yet that Gaddafi has let go of power, but repeated its view that he was on the way out. “The developments that we’re seeing are an indication the Gaddafi regime’s 42-year grip on power in Libya is slipping,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs relinquished the reins at Apple to right-hand man Tim Cook last night, after 14 years in command at a company he brought back from the brink and turned into the world’s largest technology corporation. That is a lot of tattoos for ol’ Trace Cyrus, right? But honestly, I’d probably act out that badly if Billy Ray Cyrus were my dad, too. Oh, and one more thing: Cyrus apparently has a Hot Topic-inspired clothing line called “Southern Made, Hollywood Paid.” We do this to ourselves, America.

Would you like wine with that? Plenty of fast foods work just fine with a glass of vino Expert pairing picks, from nuggets to burritos The nights you give up and grab Chipotle in a post-work fog are, likely, the nights you could really use a glass of wine. But what can you pair with fast food? Well, surprising-
ly, quite a bit, according to Gregory Dal Piaz, editorin-chief of wine website Snooth.com. “Every so often, you eat at McDonald’s — the kids want it or something and it’s the easiest thing to do — and there’s no reason you can’t have a decent glass of wine with it,” he says. “And because fast food is not that intensely flavored, it seems to go well with wines that can stand up to the acidity in the food.” We checked in for some unconventional pairing tips. MONICA WEYMOUTH

Mexican
“With fried chicken [or] chicken nuggets, to overcome the greasiness, you’re definitely looking for something crispy and fruity and lightweight — maybe a pinot grigio or unoaked chardonnay,” says Dal Piaz. But the rules change once bacon is involved, such as with McDonald’s Chicken BLT: “All the oaky, smoky stuff goes great with the bacon.”
For plainer, meaty burgers, Dal Piaz recommends simple reds with big flavors, such as a grenache blend or a cotes du rhone. But, he points out, popular burgers such as the Whopper and Big Mac are really more like sandwiches, with just as many toppings and sauces to consider as the meat. “A chardonnay actually works well with these burgers,” he says. “They have a grilled smoky flavor, and chardonnays have a creamy, oaky taste that mirrors it, and there are no tannins to fight the burger.”
When it comes to Chipotle, wine pairings aren’t as much of a stretch — Dal Piaz actually enjoyed finding matches for the chain’s veggie burrito. “The food just has a lot more going on. There are a lot of things you can play off. When you take a second bite, it’s not always identical.” For Chipotle and other spicy fast fare, he recommends a wine that’s low in tannins with some sweetness and enough acidity to fight off the oils, such as Riesling or Lambrusco. “Bubbles and spice are always a lot of fun,” he adds.
The golden rule
monica.weymouth@metro.us
If you like it, drink it. “Ultimately, it’s all about what you like,” advises Dal Piaz. “You can’t blindly follow some dude on the Internet.”

A survival guide to off-campus moving It’s that time again — backto-school season. According to the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics, 19.7 million students are enrolled in college this year and many of them are choosing to live off-campus. However, along with RAs and shared bathrooms, those student-helpers wearing neon T-shirts and offering dollies, snacks and reserved parking are also a thing of the past. Cucina Zapata 31st and Ludlow streets Friend told me about a new taco truck, and since it was only a few minutes from where we worked, I couldn’t say no! While he raved about the chicken satay taco and the Thai taco, I went with the chicken katsu. What a steal for $5! Lots of rice, and the chicken katsu has just enough of that famous brown sauce. Will definitely have to try the tacos next, and all their menu items. Yay for yummy food trucks! JENNIFER N. The citation of Goebbels in support of the Tea Party is most appropriate and ironic. Do you know what the Nazis did? They fostered hatred against a democratically elected government during a time of economic depression. They scapegoated and persecuted the poor, sick and elderly in order to monopolize control of their country. Does this sound like any group you know of ? Germany bought into the mantra of hatred just as you have.
As I sit here reading all the pro-Obama letters and anti-Tea Party ones, I have to laugh at the hypocrisy. The Obamamaniacs that blame Bush for everything from the state of the economy to the coming hurricane fail to admit that Obama increased the national debt by four times. His healthcare bill, sold to save us from medical cost doom, was shot down as unconstitutional. Time to pull up your big-boy pants, Mr. President, or the next president will be inheriting your mess.

Dog day afternoon: Phillies fall to Mets Mistakes, missed opportunities cost Phils in 7-4 loss Kendrick tagged with loss despite just two earned runs Team strands 12 base-runners Still own best record in baseball GETTY IMAGES
Kyle Kendrick drove the pace car in the longest game played at Citizens Bank Park this season. Kendrick (7-6) threw out the first pitch at 1:08 p.m. Two minutes later, he should have been sitting pretty with two outs. Instead, a botched double play by fill-in shortstop Michael Martinez led to a four-run first inning for the Mets. New York rode that momentum to a 7-4 victory yesterday over the Phillies. Time of game: 3 hours, 41 minutes. “Just one of those days, that first inning was tough,” said Kendrick, who took the loss despite giving up just two earned runs. “You got to shake it off.” Martinez misplayed a sharply hit grounder from Ruben Tejada in the first. That lone miscue led to four unearned runs, punctuated by a three-run blast from Nick Evans. “Martinez was trying to
Starter problem? Kendrick said last week that he’d prefer to be in the rotation. But, with Cole Hamels returning, he is the odd man out again. So, does he still want to start? “I’ve answered that before. I’m not going to talk about that,” Kendrick said. “Any other questions?” Kendrick also noted, “I’ll do whatever they ask me to do. It’s been a good year so far ... just keep it going for myself personally.” Mets catcher Josh Thole tries to calm Placido Polanco down in the sixth inning. Mirage or reality?
Michael Vick is coming off an abysmal threeinterception performance last week in Pittsburgh. Was it a mirage or reality? Personally, we feel it was a mirage, or the direct result of a masterful defensive game plan from Dick LeBeau. However, it does bear noting that Vick has now thrown eight picks in his last seven games, dating back to the 2010 regular season.

Forget the linebackers. Free safety Nate Allen was atrocious against the Steelers. Earlier this week, he revealed that he is less than 100 percent as he deals with knee tendonitis. Jarrad Page gets the start tonight. Page has had a great camp and preseason, so this could be his audition to be the Week 1 starter.
Believe it or not, the Eagles have a lot riding on the leg of Alex Henery. The rookie kicker has shown he can boot it a mile, but accuracy — and the pressure of connecting in tight NFL games — could be an issue. He’s 2for-2 (from 24 and 35 yards) in the preseason, while he’s sent all five of his kickoffs into the end zone. MIKE GREGER

There’s a good chance Peyton Manning (neck surgery) won’t be available to start the Colts’ season opener Sept. 11 at Houston. Just in case, Indy reached a contract agreement with veteran Kerry Collins yesterday.
2
The Tennessee Titans don’t have a deal with holdout RB Chris Johnson, but yesterday’s meeting between the sides was “beneficial,” GM Mike Reinfeldt said. More talks will be held in the coming days.
3
Chiefs LB Brandon Siler suffered a torn Achilles tendon this week, ending his season before it started. Siler had been competing for the starting MLB job in K.C.

Losers: NFL training camp stock watch The stock of these three players is falling as we approach the heart of fantasy drafting season:
Catches-pertouchdown for Kenny Britt during his ďŹ rst two seasons. Now that Matt Hasselbeck is in town and Britt is a starter, he’s a threat for 12-plus scores. Well worth the risks.
1
Peyton Manning, QB, IND — Manning is in real danger of missing Week 1 due to his neck injury. He is also 35 and his No. 1 receiver has lost a step. Look elsewhere.
2
Daniel Thomas, RB, MIA — Reggie Bush has been installed as the starter and the Dolphins are even kicking

the tires on a washed up Larry Johnson. That’s because Thomas has done little to impress in camp and is poised for a bit role to start the season.
3
Roy Williams, WR, CHI — Williams showed up to camp out of shape, dropping passes and failing to get open. In other words, Mike Martz can’t save him. There’s no reason to think he’ll succeed in Chicago.

It’s the 12th round and you’re on your 11th beer. After hemming and hawing for 30 seconds, you just throw out a name you know: Brett Favre! Ugh. The final few picks of your draft must not be throwaways. We need to build depth and take shots on players that have high ceilings. Here are the best fliers with average draft positions of 110 or higher:
Sir Lance Drew Brees begged for the Saints to retain Lance Moore in free agency and they did just that. Now that Reggie Bush is gone, there are more slot targets
Lance Moore’s arrow is pointing way up on the heels of a big training camp and Reggie Bush’s departure.
for Moore, and he’s reportedly having the best training camp of any New Orleans receiver.
Law firm issues Third-round rookie RB Stevan Ridley has been the star of the preseason so far, going over 100 total yards in two straight games. BenJarvus GreenEllis is far from an elite talent, so Ridley could very well get his shot as soon as this season. And if the “Law Firm were to
get injured, Ridley would have big upside as the clear goal-line back.
Cook on site The only reason Jared Cook still has an ADP of 158.9 is because no one knows who he is. After the public gets a look at his freakish talent and major role in the offense, that will change. Cook is a good bet to lead the Titans in receptions and seize top-10 tight end value by the end of the year.

The ’60s are the new ’70s
Polka dots and stars are the new stripes
Maximal is the new minimalism
Sixties-flavored A-line dresses, skirts and coats ruled the runways for collections such as Prada, Burberry Prorsum and Fendi, replacing all of those floaty ’70s looks you coveted last fall. Even trousers have a new feel to them in cigarette shapes with higher hemlines. Not that all of this is bad news for those who invested heavily in the Studio 54 look, though. That trend is still relevant, too.
Last season, it was all about stripes. But this fall, polka dots and stars take the prize for the trendiest print. Thank Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and Topshop Unique for all the spots you’re seeing in the shops, while Dolce & Gabbana are behind all those dresses covered in Milky Way twinkles that you’ve been seeing on the red carpet. If you don’t feel like committing to either print from head to toe, use a spotted shoe or bag to add a pop to your closet.
Embellished to the max in crystals and glitter (Dolce & Gabbana) or patchwork (Fendi), details and ornamentation are suddenly very important. As seen on just about every runway, more is definitely more this season. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, combine them all in a single outfit and own it.

The laser mouse has two buttons and a wheel — but what makes it special is the Smart Scan button on the left side of the mouse. Since the LSM-100 is equipped with LG’s Optical Character Recognition technology, it can also convert scanned text into an editable Microsoft Word document. MASHABLE
