Officer cops to steroids A former Philadelphia police officer pleaded guilty yesterday to taking part in an illegal steroid distribution ring. Joseph McIntyre, 36, was one of 15 defendants charged in the ring, including two other cops. He bought the anabolic steroids for his own use and to distribute.

When Joey Vento had a scare last year with colorectal cancer, “he never missed a day of work. Came out of the hospital Saturday and came back to work on Monday,” family friend Joey “Pony” Amato said yesterday at Vento’s world-famous Geno’s Steaks.

The cheesesteak baron, who died Tuesday from a massive heart attack at age 71, remained as hardworking as he was controversial in recent years. “He was a hard-headed bastard,” Amato said. “Came in to work at 4 a.m. till 11 a.m. the day he died.

After nearly a decade of speculation surrounding its future, the Reading Viaduct is finally seeing signs of life. “I’m enthusiastic about the way things have been going lately, especially with the opening of [New York City’s] High Line park,” said John Struble of the Reading Viaduct Project. “More people are seeing what you can do with an old railroad, so there’s a lot of movement.” The Center City District secured grant funding two weeks ago to conduct a schematic study of the viaduct’s SEPTA-owned portion, which stretches from Callowhill to 13th streets. “It’s a place everyone has been so anxious for years to see become the neighborhood green space,” said Bryan Haynes, whose design firm is conducting the study. “This neighborhood is really lacking in any kind of parks or open spaces.” Haynes is in the process

SEPTA takes fare overhaul to riders Wants to know what riders think Agency unsure best way for new technology on widespread rail system With questions still remaining about how SEPTA’s new fare system will look on Regional Rail lines, an advisory group has recommended a two-way gated system that would require riders to pay entering and leaving five stations in Center City. SEPTA expects to award a contract for its new smart-card system in the fall. The system, which will eliminate tokens and paper transfers, will be straightforward for buses, trolleys and subways — but SEPTA hopes to make the Regional Rail structure more uniform and convenient. Under the current proposals, Regional Rail

Even if you are a survivalist and you put a lot of stuff away, do you really want to be in a densely populated area with thousands of people who havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t

prepared? Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be hungry and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not going to hesitate to try to take your stuff. I think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another reason why you need to be armed. But even in the city, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think you could be armed enough to fight off the potential hoards. Would you like wine with that? Plenty of fast foods work just fine with a glass of vino Expert pairing picks, from nuggets to burritos The nights you give up and grab Chipotle in a post-work fog are, likely, the nights you could really use a glass of wine. But what can you pair with fast food? Well, surprising-

ly, quite a bit, according to Gregory Dal Piaz, editorin-chief of wine website Snooth.com. “Every so often, you eat at McDonald’s — the kids want it or something and it’s the easiest thing to do — and there’s no reason you can’t have a decent glass of wine with it,” he says. “And because fast food is not that intensely flavored, it seems to go well with wines that can stand up to the acidity in the food.” We checked in for some unconventional pairing tips. “With fried chicken [or] chicken nuggets, to overcome the greasiness, you’re definitely looking for something crispy and fruity and lightweight — maybe a pinot grigio or unoaked chardonnay,” says Dal Piaz. But the rules change once bacon is involved, such as with McDonald’s Chicken BLT: “All the oaky, smoky stuff goes great with the bacon.”

For plainer, meaty burgers, Dal Piaz recommends simple reds with big flavors, such as a grenache blend or a cotes du rhone. But, he points out, popular burgers such as the Whopper and Big Mac are really more like sandwiches, with just as many toppings and sauces to consider as the meat. “A chardonnay actually works well with these burgers,” he says. “They have a grilled smoky flavor, and chardonnays have a creamy, oaky taste that mirrors it, and there are no tannins to fight the burger.”

When it comes to Chipotle, wine pairings aren’t as much of a stretch — Dal Piaz actually enjoyed finding matches for the chain’s veggie burrito. “The food just has a lot more going on. There are a lot of things you can play off. When you take a second bite, it’s not always identical.” For Chipotle and other spicy fast fare, he recommends a wine that’s low in tannins with some sweetness and enough acidity to fight off the oils, such as Riesling or Lambrusco. “Bubbles and spice are always a lot of fun,” he adds.

The citation of Goebbels in support of the Tea Party is most appropriate and ironic. Do you know what the Nazis did? They fostered hatred against a democratically elected government during a time of economic depression. They scapegoated and persecuted the poor, sick and elderly in order to monopolize control of their country. Does this sound like any group you know of ? Germany bought into the mantra of hatred just as you have.

As I sit here reading all the pro-Obama letters and anti-Tea Party ones, I have to laugh at the hypocrisy. Mirage or reality?

Michael Vick is coming off an abysmal threeinterception performance last week in Pittsburgh. Was it a mirage or reality? Personally, we feel it was a mirage, or the direct result of a masterful defensive game plan from Dick LeBeau. However, it does bear noting that Vick has now thrown eight picks in his last seven games, dating back to the 2010 regular season.

Forget the linebackers. Free safety Nate Allen was atrocious against the Steelers. Earlier this week, he revealed that he is less than 100 percent as he deals with knee tendonitis. Jarrad Page gets the start tonight. Page has had a great camp and preseason, so this could be his audition to be the Week 1 starter.

Believe it or not, the Eagles have a lot riding on the leg of Alex Henery. The rookie kicker has shown he can boot it a mile, but accuracy — and the pressure of connecting in tight NFL games — could be an issue.
