Time to count the cost
More than 60,000 homes lose power Many trees down all over the city, damaging homes, businesses and cars Body pulled from marina, police unsure if death is related to storm CARLY BALDWIN/METRO
To the relief of many, Hurricane Irene did not wallop New York with as much of a punch as feared, but thousands still lost power, had to deal with flooding and were cut off from home and work as the city’s subway system remained down. The storm knocked out power to more than 62,000 households across the city, with Queens the worst hit, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. There, more than 28,000 homes were without electricity yesterday. Despite warnings from Con Ed that the utility company may turn off power to Lower Manhattan, the lights stayed on downtown, and Wall Street was expected to open again for business this morning. Flooding was also an issue. There was about a foot of water on the streets in the South Street Seaport at midmorning yesterday. Out in the Rockaways, waves from the Atlantic Ocean breached
94th Street between 127th and 132nd streets, according to the mayor. Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday afternoon that no serious injuries or deaths were caused by the storm, but around 5 p.m., police pulled a body from the water at Sunset Marina on City Island in the Bronx. Police said they do not yet know how he died, and would not con-

Just rain and wind for many For many New Yorkers, the storm was not as bad as they feared. Greenpoint resident Chris Henderson decided
to heed Bloomberg’s advice to evacuate, and he and his girlfriend headed to higher ground in Staten Island. “We had some heavy rain but it didn’t seem like anything more severe than a
thunderstorm,” said Henderson, 35. “We didn’t lose power, but we’ll see what it’s like when we go back home. The major thing right now is we really want the MTA up and running.” METRO/CB

firm if they are investigating the death in connection with the hurricane. In Staten Island, firefighters used inflatable rafts to rescue 61 people, including three babies, who were trapped in their homes. Willowbrook Park Pond overflowed, an FDNY spokesman told Metro, sending five feet of water into homes at about 8 a.m. yesterday. Across the city, winds of up to 60 miles per hour brought down trees, damaging cars and buildings. “My sister called me and said her car alarm was going off at 4 a.m.,” said Veronica Hall-Lake, whose sister’s car was smashed by a tree on Hancock Street in BedfordStuyvesant, Brooklyn. “There was nothing we could do. We couldn’t go outside, the wind was blowing things around like it was paper.” CARLY BALDWIN

Trees down citywide In La Plaza Cultural Garden in the East Village, the storm knocked down an old weeping willow. “Wow, I can’t believe it came completely out of the ground,” said Manhattan resident Eric Rosenstock. “It is such a massive tree. What a shame.” Winds of up to 55 miles per hour continued all day yesterday, as Hurricane Irene took her time leaving New York.

Slow going restoring subway service
The MTA began restoring bus service at 4:30 yesterday afternoon, but this morning’s commute remained a headache, if not nearly impossible, for many. MTA officials said yesterday it will take eight hours to get all the trains, buses
and rail service back on track and warned that subway service would not be running for this morning’s commute. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and MTA Chairman Jay Walder announced later that restoration would begin at 6 a.m.
“It’s fair to say you’re going to have a tough commute,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. PATH service will be up and running by 4 a.m. today, so those in New Jersey can rely on the PATH to get them to work this morning.
The Staten Island Ferry out of St. George began running yesterday afternoon, as well. But due to flooding on the tracks, downed trees and other damage, Metro-North and LIRR are not expected to be back up and running normally today. METRO/CB

As Weather Channel meteorologist Eric Fisher, broadcasting live in Virginia Beach, said he was “pretty much speechless” about how many people were out in the hurricane, one man came completely out.
Downgraded Irene’s trail of damage Hurricane Irene surged through New York City yesterday, flooding waterfronts and low-lying areas, but America’s most populous city avoided the mass devastation some had feared.
Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved up the coast, dropping heavy rain on Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. On its march over the
weekend, the storm left at least 12 dead, as many as 3.6 million customers without electricity, widespread flooding and damage to coastal towns in several states. REUTERS

What if these celebs were BFF? Hollywood is already filled with weird best friends. You don’t think so? What about Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna, Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham, Rihanna and Katy Perry, Kanye West and Jared Leto? But hey, if you’re super rich and can’t have normal friends for fear they will sell all of your information to Us Weekly for a nice payday, I can see how you will cling to whomever. Here are a few more couplings we’d like to see happen:
and Lindsay Lohan:
Barrymore can show Lohan it’s possible to overcome addiction while still retaining a sense of fun and a career. Wouldn’t that be nice? Jake Gyllenhaal and James Franco:
Because. Wow. Imagine the gay rumors on that one. Jeff Bridges and Taylor Momsen:
Zac Efron and Lil Wayne
What better way for Efron to show the world that, yes, he can tap dance, but also that he has mean street cred? Helena Bonham Carter and Rhianna:
If you think about it, their closets are probably simi-
larly madcap?
Kristen Stewart:
Ricky Gervais and Justin Bieber:
If anyone is going to teach Stewart how to stand up straight and smize, it’s Banks.
Because someone needs to show Bieber what it’s like to have a sense of humor. Tyra Banks and
John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway:
Hathaway needs another thespian to whip the annoying out of her otherwise formidable performance skills. Calling John Malkovich! Drew Barrymore
Maybe all Momsen needs to do to chill with this insane angst she’s sporting is to drink a few domestics with the Dude in some California dive bar? I know it’d make me feel better about my daddy issues. Sarah Jessica Parker and Dee Snyder:
Because, when you think about it, they really might be long-lost twins.

Why is Hollywood so unreal? 20TH CENTURY FOX
Many everyday things that happen in our day-to-day lives don’t show up in shows or movies Why not? What it means to include the mundane You’re watching a movie in which two characters are in the midst of an intense conversation about a giant asteroid that is on a direct path to the Pentagon when all of a sudden one of them says, “Hold that thought — gotta pee!” and darts off screen. Doesn’t happen much, does it? As a matter of fact, unless it’s directly related to the advancement of the plot, we never see these real-world moments happen on screen. Are there consequences to this exclusion? Grae Drake, movie critic at movies.com thinks so. “The reason I’m most indignant about this topic is
that movies are single-handedly reinforcing why it’s cooler to be a movie star than it is to be a real person,” she says. “Because all of these menial tasks that make up a life are completely edited out of a represen-

tation of life, therefore making us think that being normal is totally lame.” That’s just the point, argues Dr. Tonia M. Edwards, film and media professor at Georgia State University. “Those mundane moments are often removed because Hollywood encourages escape from everyday life. By removing the often tedious aspects from the story being told, it allows the viewer to distance themselves from a life in which they spend large portions of their days doing relatively unexciting things,” she says, but adds that a certain brand of film far removed from Hollywood

chooses to emphasize the boring side of life in order to make an artistic state-
ment. “European art cinema, for example, often chooses
to include moments and various elements simply because they reinforce the realistic qualities of a story. Typically, they do this in order to force people to face real life issues.” Given that “art cinema” doesn’t often make it to the multiplex, it’s a fair guess most people aren’t looking for reality. Professor of film studies at Seton Hall, Christopher Sharrett, explains why. “Today’s movies emphasize spectacle and special effects. Writing takes a back seat, and with it real human concerns,” he says. “Observing real human concerns are not, sad to say, what the audience has been trained to want, with a few exceptions.” HEIDI PATALANO

All the world’s a stage Theater comes to unlikely places in two new, dramatic works, ‘The Tenant’ by Woodshed Collective and The Amoralists’ ‘HotelMotel’ Since Punchdrunk’s “Sleep No More” took New York City by storm, new site-specific works are cropping up all across town to keep theatergoers on their toes — or at the edge of their seats — in unconventional ways. “The Tenant,” produced by Woodshed Collective, follows the story of a man who rents an apartment following the suicide of its previous occupant. It was initially conceived in Roland Topor’s 1964 novella and then replicated in Roman Polanski’s film by the same name in 1976. Here, participants enter a dilapidated church and wander through five floors where they can mimic the very ghost of the newly deceased former resident by spying on the private lives of the depressed, repressed building’s inhabitants who may FIND PLAYWRIGHT/ DIRECTOR ADAM RAPP’S TAKE ON SITE-SPECIFIC THEATER AT WWW.METRO.US/ WELLPLAYED
or may not have had a hand in the Parisian girl’s death. As the central character, Trelkovsky, gradually learns about his neighbors, his sense of paranoia and claustrophobia grows. Written by six playwrights, the storyline is impressively woven together via the use of television sets, where clues and pieces of script spring up at surprise intervals to tease out even more anticipation and tension. The Amoralists’ “HotelMotel” places two contrasting works back to back: first you enter an upscale hotel room in Manhattan, and then you’re transported to a motel in the dead of winter in the middle of Boone, N.C. First, Derek Ahonen’s “Pink Knees On Pale Skin” invites 20-member audiences to watch as a devious sex psychologist counsels couples through intimate sessions. Following a 20-minute intermission, Adam Rapp’s “Animals & Plants” takes center stage in the same — but thoroughly transformed — space. Two drug dealers and best friends find
themselves trapped in a blizzard. Tempted by rare opportunities and tested by supernatural incidents, they find it necessary to quickly discover what it means to be real men. ‘The Tenant’ Through Sept. 17, West-Park Presbyterian Church, 165 86th St., Free; limited tickets www.woodshedcollective.com

“What I love about this character that I got to play – I love that moment when she’s hurt and she has to rise and save Sally because it’s an emotion that I didn’t understand until I became a mother myself, which is that you have a strength that is unlike anything you ever thought of before, let alone ever experienced. It’s very real and it’s very primal. It happens the moment that baby is born – you are a different person.” — Katie Holmes on the sacrifices of motherhood

The 31-year-old woman who became famous for that character on “Dawson’s Creek” so many years ago, is now poised and unflappable as she sits in New York’s Waldorf Astoria, sweetly answering questions about her latest film, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” Produced by the auteur of gore, Guillermo Del Toro, “Dark” centers around a young girl named Sally
(Bailee Madison) who joins her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes) to live at an old restored mansion, which, Sally learns, harbors some creepy ancient creatures who are dying for some company. “They’re like cockroaches but worse because they’re slimy, so it’s like half-maggot, half cockroach,” Holmes says of the predatory homunculi. Sometimes, being your lovable, charming self isn’t the best approach. “One of the biggest problems is people think of themselves as being pretty smart, so they think they can wing it — they’ll impress companies and interviewers and recruiters just by being themselves,” says Lee. “But you really need to be ready to show why you’re the best candidate and are ready for the job. Make sure you’re not too casual in your approach.”
Even if the positions you’re applying for are similar, take the time to personalize each cover letter and résumé — it’ll make you stand out from the majority of applicants who don’t. “One of the biggest complaints we hear from employers is that candidates aren’t very savvy about applying for jobs,” says Lee. “They fire off the same application for every job without tailoring it for that position, and without carefully looking for an opportunity that you’d be successful at.”
If you haven’t been working, you’re far from alone. But it’s important to account for that time to prospective employers. “They’re afraid that if you’ve been out of work for a couple years than you’ve fallen into bad habits. What you have to show is that you’ve been active,” says Lee. “If you can show that in the last year you helped manage three events at your children’s schools that helped raise over $20,000, it shows that you’ve been active.”

Do some cleaning up on Google You can clean up your Facebook profile, but if your Google search results aren’t flattering, that’s a little more difficult to work around. One easy diversion that Lee suggests is to invite employers to visit your polished LinkedIn or Google+ profile so they

For their book “The Freshman Survival Guide,” authors Nora Bradbury-Haehl and Bill McGarvey of BustedHalo.com interviewed professors, administrators, campus ministers and students alike in order to give incoming freshmen a primer on practicalities they’ll need to know their first year of college — and also to help them tackle the bigger questions. We went to McGarvey with some questions of our own. What’s the biggest mistake freshmen make when they start college?

Online Expand on the book’s web component. I came from a web background and I wanted to make sure that our book reflected the way younger college students read and interact with the media now. Throughout the book there are chapters where you can go online and get special information or contribute, but there’s also this thing called the Interactive RA [where] resident assistants from around the country volunteer to take questions.
and a few weeks or months into the semester, you might realize that person you befriended can be not really worthy of your trust. You spend 18 years getting to this point and you have friendships and networks with people that know you and who you are: Don’t just chuck them out the window because you’re in college and everything is exciting and new. Why did you choose to include matters of faith in your book? A lot of college guidebooks don’t.
That’s kind of the reason why. There’s a lot of books out there about getting into school and making yourself

Why you should choose Briarcliffe College:
a success in college, but there was nothing in there that dealt with the whole student. These books almost seem to assume that these students were a collection of brain cells and hormones. College kids are less religious but they’re definitely getting more spiritual.

Defending U.S. Open champion and current No. 2-seeded player Rafael Nadal is feeling the heat to take first in this year’s Open — just not as intensely as he was at this time last year. “The pressure is always there,” he told the crowd at Bar Basque last week, where he was on hand to promote Bacardi’s Champions Drink Responsibly campaign. “Last year was more pressure for me than this year, because last year I felt I had a real chance of winning. Last year I felt ready to win.” With his win one

“The pressure is always there. ... Last year I felt ready to win.” RAFAEL NADAL, DEFENDING U.S. OPEN CHAMPION
year ago, the “King of Clay” became the seventh player in history achieve a Grand Slam, and the youngest player in the open era to do so. This year, he’ll take on current No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in an effort to defend his title, and he won’t let a recent mishap at a Japanese restaurant (Nadal burned two fingers touching a hot plate) — or foot injuries that have threatened to curb his career — get in the way.
“With the injury of my left foot, for moments it was tough — we didn’t know if I would have the chance to be playing,” Nadal said. And while in town for the Open, Nadal plans to take advantage of all that the city has to offer. “I have been here in the past, before I came for the U.S. Open, with my family. I know the city very well. When I have the chance I love to walk around, have dinner in good places from here. Probably later I’m gonna go to the theater to watch a musical. I think today [it’s] ‘Mamma Mia.’” MEREDITH ENGEL
meredith.engel@metro.us
Djokovic has own concerns TENNIS. While Rafael Nadal deals with his food-related injury, Novak Djokovic is dealing with his own problems. Djokovic pulled out of last week’s tournament in Montreal — in the middle of his semifinal match — with a pulled muscle in his arm. Djokovic will play in Queens, but one player we know is fully healthy is five-time champ Roger Federer. METRO
