Transit Police Patrolman Saro Thompson hands cyclist Laura Nasuti a pamphlet on bike theft prevention. Bicycle thefts have reached a new high on T property this year.

Last year, bike thefts at T stations reached a 12-year high. But this year, larcenies are even worse. Transit Police Deputy Chief Joseph O’Connor said as T ridership spiked, a larger number of people parked their bikes at MBTA stations. And with that came more thefts. According to Transit Police statistics, 170 bikes to date have been stolen systemwide compared to 156 for all of 2010. As new bike racks fill up

fast during morning commutes, people put their bikes other places in a rush to catch a train, said O’Connor. “They are locking them to signs and poles that aren’t designed to secure bikes and that makes them more vulnerable for theft,” he said.

From 4 to 6:30 p.m. today, officers and Red Line workers will be stationed at several locations to talk about bicycle theft and safety. The outreach is aimed at preventing bicycle theft by stressing the importance of bike security.

Transit Police Lt. Robert Lenehan said rising gas prices have also led to more people commuting by bike to T stations, which has contributed to the increase. In Lenehan’s district, which incorporates certain Red Line stops, officers have launched an awareness program to thwart bike thefts. While some problem stations in his district, like Alewife, saw a drop in bicycle larcenies, he said larceny is still the No. 1 problem for T police overall.

“We have experienced bike thefts this year in locations where we have never had bike thefts in the past,” said Lenehan. Lenehan said Cambridge in particular has experienced an upswing in reported thefts as it’s bikefriendly reputation grows. “This is representative of the growing trend in bike theft not just across the MBTA, but also across the commonwealth,” he said.

Fare increase study on track; July hike possible NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

A Fair Fight Rally was held in front of the Massachusetts State House by supporters of the Protection from Sexual Predators Act of 2011 yesterday.

Changes sought in sex abuse laws Advocates want to do away with statute of limitations Survivors say it takes decades to cope, come forward Calling child sexual abuse “slow murder,” advocates for a bill that would end the statute of limitations for abuse cases rallied at the State House yesterday. MBTA ridership isn’t the only thing that might go up next year — by July 1 commuters are likely to see a fare increase, too. During a meeting with the MBTA’s board of directors yesterday, Charles Planck, the senior director of strategic initiatives, said the wheels are in motion to examine service cuts and fare hikes on the T. Planck said a lengthy process that includes examining impacts on ridership, several meetings with the T’s Rider Oversight Committee and a handful of public hearings must happen first, however. A springtime vote is needed from the MBTA board for targeting the implementation by July. MBTA interim General

Prosecutors show picture of dead Michael Jackson Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted AL SEIB/POOL/REUTERS

Grim photos of Michael Jackson lying dead in a hospital bed juxtaposed with a picture of the “Thriller” singer rehearsing the day before his demise brought an emotional opening yesterday to the manslaughter trial of the doctor hired to care for him. In opening arguments two years after Jackson’s sudden death by drug overdose, prosecutor David Walgren told jurors that the pop star “literally put his life in the hands of Dr. Conrad Murray.” “That misplaced trust in the hands of Conrad Murray cost Michael Jackson his life,” Walgren added. But Murray’s lawyers argued that Jackson “caused his own death” by giving himself extra medication. “He died so rapidly, so instantly, he didn’t even have time to close his eyes,” defense attorney Ed Chernoff said in opening arguments. Murray has pleaded not guilty to the involuntary

most recent issue of the Journal of Service Research. To make matters worse for the retailer, more than half of those who experience rudeness tell their friends and coworkers about the incident (58 percent and 55 percent, respectively). It’s not just the rudeness customers experience firsthand that has the potential to tar a company’s reputation. Researchers found that half of those surveyed witnessed one employee be rude to another at a store at least once a month, and the vast majority of those customers who did ended up speaking negatively about the company. Rude behavior, or “incivility” as the researchers refer to it, is defined in the report as encompassing any incident where workers are perceived as being insensitive or disrespectful. Support the good of many It’s obvious that Metro is pro-liberal and anticonservative. While I don’t agree with either party 100 percent, I know America is falling apart. And our citizens are finally waking up. The good of the many outweighs the good for the few. That’s how a country survives. Why are we blindly taking care of others when we can’t take care of ourselves? The free ride on the backs of hardworking Americans is over. If liberalism had free reign, this country would die.

Your story about the antiWall Street group never explains what they’re actually trying to achieve. It should be simple: Register to vote, and stop voting for Republicans!

or a guy who plays a stunt driver that moonlights as a getaway driver in “Drive,” Ryan Gosling says he didn’t get a whole lot of time behind the wheel in the film. “I drove myself to set and I drove myself home,” he says with a laugh. But seriously, though. “I went to driving school, and I did a lot of the driving. But the cool stuff, I didn’t do,” he says. “But it was one of the best prep experiences I’ve ever had, because I’d basically just show up to this big parking lot, and there’d be a new Camaro or a new Mustang and we’d just ride it to the rims until it was smoking or it wouldn’t go anymore, then we’d just go home and they’d tow it away and call us when it was fixed.” “Drive” was something of a meeting of the minds for Gosling and the film’s director, Nicolas Winding Refn. “We set out to make a violent John Hughes movie, and I think that’s what we did,” Gosling says. “This

movie wouldn’t have happened if REO Speedwagon hadn’t come on the radio [during a drive the actor and director shared while discussing the project].” Gosling and the director’s shared dream apparently worked out great, as the pair are jumping into more projects together already. They’re now developing a remake of “Logan’s Run” and they’re prepping to shoot a film about Thai kickboxing. With “Drive” getting such positive reviews, there’s been talk of a sequel — even if it was originally just in jest: “We were joking for a while — but maybe it’s not a joke — that it would be a prequel called ‘Drive 2’ where it’s about [Albert Brooks] and Ron Perlman,” he says.

Alternative procedures promise no pain and less recovery time But are they right for you? GETTY IMAGES

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction procedures have increased since 2009.

Lipo by laser: Is it a good idea?

hough they’re not the most popular of all plastic surgeries performed (that would be breast augmentation, with 296,000 surgeries done in 2010), liposuction procedures have increased 2 percent from 2009, to 203,000 procedures performed in 2010. For those considering the surgery, there are some new alternatives to going under the knife — like Zerona, a noninvasive laser alternative that was approved by the FDA last year. Zerona uses local anesthesia, which is thought to be safer than general anesthesia (used in traditional lipo) and causes and less tissue damage. “Patients can go back to work straight after — there’s no downtime. You don’t feel anything,” says Kathy Bettencourt, RN, MSN, who uses Zerona at the Beach Plum Spas on Cape Cod and in Plymouth, Mass. The Zerona laser

liquifies the fat and drains it via a small puncture in the cell, which heals within 72 hours. Then, the fat is disposed of naturally through the lymphatic system. But not everyone is as enthusiastic about Zerona. “If it sounds too good to be true, it is,” says Dr. Mitchell Chasin, founder and medical director of New Jersey’s Reflections Center for Skin and Body. “Zerona takes away general anesthesia, but that’s the only good thing about it. We found the machines were ineffective. The process involves drinking a gallon of water, cardio, no alcohol and a low-fat diet. It’s the lifestyle change that gives the reduction.” Not so, says Bettencourt: “I tried it and lost several inches. I incorporated the diet program afterward and the weight has stayed off.” LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us

Other options If you’re considering plastic surgery, other alternatives to traditional lipo include Vaser, which uses ultrasound technology; lasers such as SlimLipo and SmartLipo; and Zel-

tique, a so-called “cool sculpting” laser method. But only fully trained professionals should do any procedure. For plastic surgeries, make sure the surgeon is board-certified and check for any malpractice suits (which can be easily found on medical board websites).

Important information about the flu Flu vaccines may be available in your community now. Get vaccinated before flu season starts in October. The sooner you get the vaccine the better. Don’t delay. Protect yourself, your family, your friends, and others you meet from this potentially serious disease. It's flu season again and the public health community wants you to be informed. The flu is a disease that affects the lungs and can lead to serious illness, pneumonia and even death. Some of the symptoms are fever, sore throat, cough, headache, chills, and body aches. Last flu season was particularly bad. If you recall, a new flu virus called "H1N1" emerged. This flu was more dangerous than the typical seasonal flu. Hospitalization rates for people between the ages of 5

and 64 more than doubled. Four to 5 times as many young people died than in previous years. Anyone can get and spread the flu. Healthy kids and adults can sick from the flu and spread it to family and friends. Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu. Flu Vaccine Facts • The vaccine is safe • You cannot catch the flu from the vaccine • The earlier you get the shot the better (don’t wait until people around you get sick) • You need to get the shot every year (even if you had it last year) • People with egg allergy may still be able to get the vaccine (consult your doctor)

There are two types of flu vaccine available: • The flu shot, which is given by injection into the muscle, and • Nasal spray, which is sprayed into the nostrils (nasal spray vaccine is not recommended for everyone) Some people have a higher risk of getting very sick if they catch the flu. People with high

risk include pregnant women, young children, seniors and the elderly, and people with chronic health problems like asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease. If you live with a person with high risk, you should be sure to get the vaccine so that you do not spread the flu to them. This is also true for health care professionals and others who work with high risk individuals.

5 Tips To Help You Stay Healthy 1) Get a flu shot. 2) Boost your immune system; eat healthy, exercise and get enough sleep. 3) Try not to touch your hands to your eyes, nose or mouth. 4) Wash your hands many times each day! Use hot water and soap and scrub briskly. 5) Use a hand sanitizer that has alcohol between washings.

New center for robotic surgery helps women with gynecological disorders At Brigham and Women’s Center for Robotic Surgery at Faulkner Hospital, gynecologists are using cutting edge technology to treat and care for many gynecological conditions using state-of-the-art robotics to improve reproductive surgery outcomes. At Brigham and Women’s Center for Robotic Surgery at Faulkner Hospital, physicians use the da Vinci Surgical System to perform a wide variety of gynecological procedures including: • Hysterectomies (benign or cancer) • Myomectomy (removing fibroids but preserving the uterus) • Tubal Reversals (after prior tubal ligation) • Endometriosis

• Ovarian cysts and masses Under the direction of Dr. James Greenberg, the Center is led by Dr. Antonio Gargiulo and Dr. Serene Srouji who are pioneers in the field of gynecological robotic surgery, having performed New England’s first successful robot-assisted laparoscopic tubal sterilization reversal, as well as Boston’s first robot-assisted hybrid myomectomy for the removal of very large myomata. They have since continued this accomplished partnership to perform more than 350 robot-assisted surgeries. “Traditional open surgery requires one large incision and retraction to accommodate human hands, but only small incisions are re-

quired for the robot’s hands,” states Dr. Gargiulo. In fact, these hands are attached to four arms - one guides a high definition 3-D camera, two act as the surgeon’s main arms, and an optional arm is often used for holding back tissue. The movements of the robot are always guided by a doctor, never programmed. This miniaturization, increased range of motion, enhanced vision, and mechanical precision ultimately allow for virtually all reproductive surgeries to be performed laparoscopically, translating into added benefits for the patient, such as: • Less blood loss • Less post-surgical pain

/less medication • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities • Less scarring • Less likelihood of complications “Many of our patients are still in their child-bearing years,” states Dr. Srouji. “Of all the gynecological procedures performed today, the precision of robotic surgery allows us more opportunities to effectively preserve the fertility of our patients.” If you have any of the symptoms described above, call us at 617-983-7500 to schedule a consultation. You’re Probably A Candidate The reality is that the majority of people who meet the age and general health requirements are in fact good candidates for the iLASIK procedure. There are some conditions that exclude certain patients, but whether you have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, there’s a good chance you can still have the iLASIK procedure. If you meet the basic criteria below, you should call today to book your free evaluation: • You are at least 18 years old • You are in good general health • You have had a stable vision prescription for at least one year • You have no existing eye disease Take The Next Step Now that you’ve learned the basics about the iLASIK procedure, you should: • Schedule a FREE complimentary consultation with our doctors to determine if you are a good candidate for the iLASIK procedure Presbyopia Correcting IOLs (Multifocal IOLs) Presbyopia is a condition that most people over the age of 40 experience that results in difficulty seeing up close without the aid of bifocals, trifocals, or reading glasses. The age-related condition is believed to be caused by a hardening of the lens inside the eye, making it difficult for the eye’s muscles to change its focus. Over time, the lens becomes cloudy and develops into a cataract. It is said that, if we live long enough, we will all develop cataracts. The only way to treat cataracts is to remove and replace them with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). Until recently, the primary option was to receive a “fixed focus” IOL. Patients who received this type of IOL typically had both eyes corrected for distance vision but usually still required glasses for intermediate and near vision. If you are experiencing presbyopia or cataracts, you may be a candidate for one of the new technologically advanced IOLs that can provide a full range of vision. This means that you can read and see clearly in the distance and everything in-between, with little or no dependence on bifocals, trifocals, or contact lenses. It’s almost like having a bifocal or progressive lens inside your eye. Depending on the technological features of these IOLs, they may be described as “Accommodating IOLs”, “Apodized-diffractive IOLs”,

or “Multifocal IOLs”. Each of these lenses has some advantages and disadvantages. Which one is best for you depends on the unique characteristics of your eye as well as your lifestyle needs. You and your doctor will decide together which lens is more advantageous for you. New England Eye Center offers many premium lens options including Crystalens, ReStor, Toric and others. The vast majority of patients who chose a Multifocal lens report they can read a book, work on a computer, drive a car – day and night – and play golf or tennis with an increased freedom from glasses. Multifocal lens surgery can address cataracts, presbyopia and astigmatism. Intraocular Lens for Astigmatism Advances in Intraocular Lens (IOL) technology now provide a reliable and effective option for patients with astigmatism. Until the recent introduction of Toric IOLs, people who are considered candidates for intraocular lenses could only have their nearsightedness and farsightedness corrected during lens implant surgery. Patients with astigmatism would either require corneal refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, or LRI) after lens implant surgery or the would remain dependant on glasses or contacts due to uncorrected astigmatism. Astigmatism is caused by the cornea being more curved in one direction than the other, much like a football. Toric IOLs are specially shaped IOLs designed to offset the imbalance created by the irregular shape of the cornea. Once implanted and aligned inside the eye, they stay fixed in place, thereby eliminating pre-existing astigmatism.

Dana-Farber encourages you to get the facts about ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cancer is one of the most deadly of women's cancers. Each year, approximately 21,880 women are diagnosed with the disease. Many women don't seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93%. Recent research suggests that together the four symptoms of bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and urinary urgency or frequency may be associated with ovarian cancer. There is currently no early detection test for ovarian cancer. Until there is a test, the key to early diagnosis is awareness.

To promote awareness of this disease and its symptoms, a coalition including Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, The M. Patricia Cronin Foundation, and the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition are supporting a statewide public education effort to promote ovarian cancer awareness. The campaign includes television public service announcements and the following statewide education initiatives.

FP3’s company New development brings Fort Point further into the city It’s official: This is no longer the land of abandoned warehouse buildings At the beginning of this century, Fort Point Channel was a quiet enclave, noted for its artist residents, the Children’s Museum, Lucky’s Lounge and very little else, aside from the headquarters of a certain free daily newspaper. Even in 2008, when the area’s first swanky loft-style condos, FP3, and its trio of Barbara Lynchhelmed eating and drinking spots opened on Congress Street, it seemed an anomaly. Now, development appears to be speeding along, with new residences at Atlantic Wharf open and restaurants such as Smith &

THE LOFTS No condo fees for the first year. Closing costs paid up to $2,000.

Wollensky, Sorelle Bakery and Cafe, Jody Adams’ Trade at Atlantic Wharf and Trillium Brewery all due to open soon. “I don’t know that I’ve noticed the changes,” says Brysson Curtis, who bought a home at FP3 in 2009. “There’s a feeling of space still. The other evening I was on the roof deck grilling and it was very peaceful,” says the 37-yearold assistant engineer. “There’s definitely more traffic on Congress Street. It’s noisy on weekends, but living in a city, you expect it.”

Does this look like an old warehouse? Hardly. It’s a room in an apartment in the new FP3!

The impending Seaport Square, which will add much more residence and retail space adjacent to Fort Point Channel, will likely destroy that feeling of

space. But Curtis feels it will add to Fort Point property values. Still, he doesn’t seem too concerned. “That construction vortex seems like it’s far away

from here,” says Curtis. “I heard vaguely what they’re going to do, but haven’t seen any details. I think it will be a benefit to our building.” Curtis recalls the first time he came to Fort Point in the early 2000s, to go to Lucky’s with friends. “There was nothing here then. It was cool, all these old warehouse buildings. But it was the kind of place that seemed abandoned.” Not for much longer. LINDA LABAN

No matter what size our home is, most of us are always in need of more storage space. Rather than covering up more precious counterspace, Design Sponge contributors Derek Fagerstrom and Lauren Smith decided to add wall shelves made from recycled wine crates they found at their local wine shop. To add more detail, Lauren and Derek lined the back of the shelves with colorful, inexpensive gift wrap to act as a backdrop for their favorite books and tiny treasures.

t’s that time of the year: new tenants move in and old tenants move out. What are the key security deposit rules? When the lease or rental is over, the landlord has 30 days to return the tenant’s security deposit. The landlord may deduct any unpaid rent from the security deposit. If the landlord deducts for damages, the landlord must notify the tenant in writing, signed under the penalties of perjury, itemize and document the damages and cost of repair. When the tenant moves into an apartment, the landlord must within 10 days give a tenant who pays a security deposit a Statement of the Apartment’s Condition. Within 30 days of taking a security deposit, the landlord must place the deposit in a special “escrow” type of account in a bank in Massachusetts, and notify the tenant of the bank, account number and amount of the deposit, among other requirements. The security deposit law is very complicated and often misunderstood. The foregoing is general information. Consult an attorney to see how the law may apply to you. Also, see my security deposit law blog at http://securitydepositlawblog.c om or simply Google: warshaw security deposits. © 2011 George Warshaw.

The interior of 25 Hunt Ave. in Braintree looks like the type of place the leader of the free world could grow up.

A good place to raise the next president Braintree’s most famous resident, John Adams, was actually one of the Hub’s very first commuters When recounting the birth of America, Braintree isn’t high on the list of hallowed locations. Boston, yes. Philadelphia, yes. Why not Braintree? This was where statesman and second president John Adams built his family’s home. It was a bucolic habitat where Adams found peace in a turbulent world. Though Adams’ business and then political activism meant he needed access to Boston (and Philadelphia), he raised a family here. Well, his stoic wife Abigail possibly did more on that front; but along with being a father, Adams also helped raise a nation. Much has changed about Braintree since then, of course. Part of it was lost in creating neighboring Quincy, named for Adams’ eldest son and later president, John Quincy. The three-bedroom, single-family home for sale at 25 Hunt Ave. is no rural retreat, but realtor Nao White says it’s perfect for a young family and located in what is reputed to be a fine school district.

Info 25 Hunt Ave. has 960 sq. ft. of living space, plus a finished basement that runs the length of the house. It was built in 1997 and has one full bath, and one half. For price and more info: Nao White, Keller Williams Realty. 617-372-7221. 25 Hunt Ave., Braintree

“This property is great for somebody who would still like to be in the Red Line T area, but would like to be in a great school district for young children,” says White. South Shore Mall adds local shopping and dining, and, of course, the Adams National Historical Park preserves some of Braintree’s history. The commuter-convenient location in close proximity to Braintree station gives access to Boston. Quite a bit different to the dirt road that John Adams rode to work — and to revolution. LINDA LABAN

How could the year have come to this?

GETTY IMAGES

Tonight should have been a victory lap, tune-up Instead, the Sox are playing for their playoff lives Blame the starting pitching for the historic collapse

How did it ever come to this? The Red Sox were supposed to take the field tonight in Baltimore with starters resting and American League Division Series analysis starting. Instead, after giving away a nine-game wildcard lead in the span of 23 days, the Sox find themselves in a must-win situation in Game 162, with the specter of a Game 163 at Tropicana Field looming. If Boston does have a one-game playoff against the Rays, it will begin at 4:07 p.m. tomorrow. So desperate are the Sox to avoid such a scenario, Jed Lowrie batted cleanup last night against the Orioles with the season on the brink. So desperate are the Sox, they are sending Jon Lester to the mound at Camden Yards on three days’ rest, just the second time the left-hander has ever done so. The first time is hardly a confidencebooster: On April 23, 2008, Lester allowed four runs over five innings against the Angels.

Before this season, the Red Sox had gone into September in first place 17 times. They made the playoffs in 15 of those.

7.5

The 1995 Angels are the current holders of the September collapse record. They led the AL West by 7.5 games going into the month, only to miss the postseason entirely.

4:07

A one-game playoff between the Red Sox and Rays would begin at 4:07 p.m. tomorrow at Tropicana Field in Florida. GET MORE METRO ONLINE: WWW.METRO.US

And speaking of no confidence: Lester, once considered a Cy Young Award candidate, is 0-3 with a 10.54 ERA in his past three starts. And that is how it has come to this. The Sox did not enter play last night 5-17 since leading the Rays by nine games on Sept. 3 by accident. The starting pitching, personified by Lester, has been horrendous, going 3-12 with a 7.26 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. In fact, the top-two combo of Lester and Josh Beckett, who again failed to deliver when needed Monday night, is 1-5 with a 6.18 ERA since the beginning of the collapse. “There’s not a whole lot of reason to think it through too much,” manager Terry Francona said. “We just need to win.” JEFF GOLDBERG sports@metro.us

Jon Lester is scheduled to throw on short rest tonight.

Tonight everything for Boston, Tampa

GETTY IMAGES

After 161 regular-season games, only today matters Red Sox, Rays both win their penultimate contests of 2011 Boston’s season is in Jon Lester’s (left) hand

Forget April, May and June. You can get rid of July and August. For that matter, most of September no longer matters, either. After 161 regular-season games, the Red Sox and Rays remain tied. For the two teams hoping to earn the American League’s wild-card playoff berth, it is now a one-game season. Boston finally snapped out of it last night, beating up on the Orioles’ pitching staff in a 8-7 win at Camden Yards. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay came from behind to topple the Yankees, 5-3, at Tropicana Field. That means the Sox and Rays enter their respective regular-season finales tonight with identical 90-71 records. There’s no math left at the end of a pennant race that’s been full of halfgames, deficits and magic numbers. For each team, it’s a one-game season. If one wins and the other loses tonight, the winning team goes to the playoffs. If both win — or both lose — they’re staring down

Before this season, the Red Sox had gone into September in first place 17 times. They made the playoffs in 15 of those.

the barrel of a one-game playoff at 4:07 p.m. tomorrow at the Trop. Jon Lester will be doing his best to make sure the Sox don’t end up there. He’s scheduled to take the mound on three days’ rest tonight, hoping to improve on three starts that have seen him go 0-3 with a 10.54 ERA. He’ll be opposed by big Baltimore right-hander Alfredo Simon, who’s 4-9 with a 4.85 ERA on the year. Tampa Bay will send ace lefty David Price (12-13, 3.35 ERA) against the Yankees. It was still unclear at press time which secondteamer New York would open with. Ryan Lavarnway was the hero for Boston last night, hitting two home runs the day after stepping in for the injured Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Jacoby Ellsbury and Marco Scutaro also went yard. METRO
