“It’s a political movement, but it’s a permanent community, too. It’s social politics, just like at party conventions. It’s about politics but kind of like a spirit week, too.

As Occupy Philly enters its third calendar week, the movement is still deciding on a unified political message and, at times, lapsing into party mode. “To me, it’s more of a social gathering or network,” said Chazz Colon, 48, of North Philadelphia, who has been outside City Hall daily. “Nothing indicates change — we still have the same problems. They can’t solve things with simple anger.” “We’ve been politically partying at times. It depends on who you talk to because people from all walks of life are here,” said teen activist Sally Sue. “It was amazing, on Sat-

Can’t we all just ride along same lanes?

PAIGE OZAROSKI/METRO

Philly introduces new type of lane-sharing system on some Center City streets ‘Sharrows’ designate where cyclists, motorists must share road There’s now one more reason for motorists and cyclists in Center City to share the road peacefully: new sharrow lanes. A sharrow is a shared lane marking for bikes and automobiles. It looks like a bike lane symbol with two arrows above it — a concept used on streets that are too narrow or too congested for dedicated bike lanes. The tool has been used in cities such as San Francisco, Portland and New York City, and one was recently installed on South 15th Street between Penn Square and Washington Avenue. City transportation offi-

How’s ride in bike lanes? Stober said officials are still studying the effects of pilot bike lanes on 10th and 13th streets in Center City before issuing a final report. The lanes could become the first northsouth paths dedicated strictly to cyclists. They will be extended north to Spring Garden Street next month, Stober said, following the completion of road work by PennDOT. METRO/SDL

cials said others have been installed or will soon pop up on Christian Street in South Philadelphia and Main Street in Manayunk. It is part of the city’s plan to extend the bike network to cover 300 miles. “The purpose of those is to direct cyclists to just use that one lane and to alert motorists that they should expect to see cyclists in that lane,” said Andrew Stober, from the city’s Office of Transportation. The sharrows are on the left side of the street, typically four feet from parked cars to maximize visibility for drivers and cyclists.

“I’m very happy that the city is willing to ... try and make bicycling better in the city. I think that there are obvious limits to what a treatment like that does, but it’s a step in the right direction.” ALEX DOTY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BICYCLE COALITION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA

The global “Day of Rage” against the world’s financial system won some limited sympathy from political and economic leaders yesterday after protests that were peaceful everywhere but Italy. Cities from east Asia to Europe and North America saw rallies on Saturday denouncing capitalism, inequality and economic crisis, but riot police were busy only in Rome. On the up and up? Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lopez. (Maybe!) The actor stepped out recently with a woman who looked a lot like the “American Idol” judge, though she was going to great lengths to shield herself from photographers, according to Us Weekly. A source close to the singer says it was in fact Lopez meeting up with the “Hangover” star, getting together again after having dinner last month. “After their date in New York, Bradley and Jennifer stayed in touch,” the source says. “She does like his attention, and it makes her feel good that he seems so into her. She has a fun time with Bradley and he makes her laugh.”

Though Simon Le Bon once sang that “wild boys never lose it,” the Duran Duran singer experienced a huge physical setback when he blew out his voice during a concert earlier this summer. “I really did lose my top range — a whole octave of my range — for about two months,” he says. “The doctors were never able to give me a definitive diagnosis of what had occurred.” Le Bon went on vocal rest and his bandmates and he rejiggered their set, so that when the singer was ready to sing again, the songs would ramp up from their

Although there is an air of humor in this statement, there is also an air of truth. For a band whose sound so defined the 1980s, Duran Duran somehow escape being defined by that decade. For their most recent offering, last year’s “All You Need is Now,” they worked with producer Mark Ronson and achieved a sound that hon-

ors their legacy, while showing a keen awareness of where music is today. “I think we’re very lucky, in that we’ve had numerous hits, from the early stuff — I guess, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ was the first big hit and ‘Is There Something I Should Know,’ ‘Rio,’ ‘The Reflex,’ — we’ve got lots of songs that really have had huge success here, and

when you have so many of them, it’s difficult for any one song to enslave you,” he says. “We could very easily go out and play a greatest hits show, but we’re very conscious of the fact that to keep our excitement alive in the band, we need to make new albums, we need to make new songs and we need to play them to people.”

Le Bon says that Duran Duran has got their setlists down to a science, as far as what old hits and new numbers they play. “We don’t need to play as much as half the number of these songs, but not as little as a quarter,” he says. “There really is a balance that seems obvious when you’re playing a show. If you put four new songs together, then the audience gets twitchy. They want something they can dance to, and they know the words to, something they can sing along to, something they know can give them the feeling that they want.” PAT HEALY

Song Therapy

‘In the Dark’ by Dev The coolest thing about this song, currently No. 1 on the Billboard dance chart, is probably how the main riff — almost always done by some synth-y sounding instrument in club music — actually sounds like a saxophone. It

probably isn’t an actual sax, but it is a spicy sound to hear that’s unexpected. Credit for that goes to producers, the Cataracs. You’ll recognize Dev’s voice from “Like a G6” by the Far East Movement from last year. In this song, she sings about dancing in the dark and

letting her hands do what they want, but the line you’ll be singing the next morning a little too loudly is, “I’ve got a sex drive. Push to start,” especially if you do have one of those newish cars that doesn’t need a key to get it going. Regardless, this song is the key to get your night going. Now — after 20 years spent in various hip-hop scenes as an artist, organizer and scholar — Dr. Petchauer has completed his first book examining the culture of hip-hop on college campuses. “Hip-Hop Culture in College Students’ Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment will be released by

It’s a way

Union clinches playoff berth after Toronto draw What a great day for a second-year franchise. The Union found out they had made the MLS playoffs following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Toronto FC at a sold-out PPL Park. That’s quite impressive, considering this team hasn’t been in existence all that long. “I’m very excited for our players, our organization and especially our great fans, said Sebastien Le

Toux, who scored his teamleading 11th goal against Toronto. “It feels really great, and now we have to keep it going. That’s the next goal. Philadelphia is 11-7-15, and extended its unbeaten streak to eight (3-0-5). The Union is one of nine teams that’s clinched a playoff berth. One spot is up for grabs. Next up is a trip to rival New York on Thursday, before finding out where the

Smaller SUVs beware the new Land Rover 2012 Evoque coupe at a glance

British sports utility brand wants to expand appeal to urbanites What new model gains in practical appeal, it loses in off-road range GETTY IMAGES

Speed: 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds Gas mileage per gallon: 28 highway, 18 city Price as tested: $59,820 Best feature: Stylish appearance and that massive panoramic sunroof. Worst feature: No low-range off-road. Target buyer: The small-SUV shopper who wants cutting-edge looks and acceptable gas mileage.

You’ve never considered owning a Land Rover? Clearly you don’t live in the Australian outback or have a Hollywood entourage to cart around between house parties in the Hills. Maybe you can’t rationalize the 12 miles per gallon in the city. You might have a BMW or Lexus SUV, but until now you’ve been safe from the siren call of the Gaydon, U.K.-based brand. Well, take a look at the new Range Rover Evoque. It’s a dazzlingly designed Trojan horse, aimed squarely at owners of the X3, RX and Audi Q5, an anti-box that looks like a crossover, while retaining a dash of Land Rover’s legendary offroad capability. Old-school Land Rover drivers who actually do drive in the bush will hate it. There’s a long-held perception that a Land Rover is

The Range Rover Evoque mixes off-roader with city-dweller.

an impractical purchase. The Evoque’s starting price of $44,000 is also more accessible for urbanites aspiring to get back to nature, or, at least, reaching suburbia’s big-box stores. The inside is distinctly carlike. There’s plenty of room, but it’s more like the space of a midsize sedan

than a fat SUV. The entire roof is glass, from door frame to door frame. The Evoque drives nearly as nicely on the road as any crossover or small SUV on the market, except for the latest-generation BMW X3. The X3 is faster, more fluid and outright more capable on-road; nearly as good as

the 3 Series sedan. For all that style and onroad comfort, you’ve got to give something, and in this case it’s a measure of offroad prowess. For hard-core off-roaders will find, to their horror, the Evoque has no low range, the type of lowend gearing needed for truly serious terrain. BLOOMBERG

Philly-area dealerships warm up for coat drive The Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Philadelphia Auto Show, announced that starting this past weekend the organization will distribute 22,548 brand-new winter coats to less fortunate children living throughout the region as part of its fourth annual Driving Away the

Cold program. “This initiative has grown every year,” Kevin Mazzucola of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation and Auto Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia said. “We started back in 2008 ... [and] distributed 17,000 new coats then. Each year, we’ve been able to do more

and more. This would not be possible without the participation of our dealer members. It hasn’t been an easy four years for them, given the recent industry turmoil and state of the economy.” The Driving Away the Cold program is a two-part program: The charitable foundation jump-starts the

annual campaign with a donation of 10,000 new child-size coats, and then area auto dealers contribute as part of a special monthlong campaign. An additional 11,640 new coats were donated this year by the 163 participating dealerships, making the four-year campaign total exceed 79,000. METRO

Stacks of coats were shown off this past weekend.
