BRONX. A 20-year-old woman was killed and her younger brother badly injured in a car accident yesterday morning that police say was caused by icy roads. The siblings were driving on the Cross Bronx Expressway when their Chevy Venture minivan crashed just before 6 a.m., near Exit 5A. The brother and sister exited the car and were looking at the damage when they were struck by a Toyota Corolla, according to police. They were both ejected over the concrete highway barrier and fell 75 feet to the ground below. METRO/CB EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN/METRO

MTA gets spooked by Halloween vandalism threat 20% The threat of Halloween mischief means the MTA may shorten some bus routes today, and leave out certain stops altogether. Portions of three bus routes may be skipped, according to MTA officials; those three routes are the Bx8 in Edgewater Park, the Bx24 in the Country Club section of the Bronx, and the B31 in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, a bus that’s often a target for chucked ice and snowballs during the winter months. The MTA has shut down lines in those areas in years past to avoid vandalism, such as egg-throwing.

Talk about plane infuriating. The freak early snowstorm that hit the East Coast this weekend stranded more than 200 passengers aboard a Newarkbound JetBlue flight for seven hours on Saturday, without food, water or working bathrooms. Flight 504 departed from Fort Lauderdale at 10 a.m., headed for Newark. However, the rapidly deteriorating weather made landing in New Jersey impossible, and the plane was rerouted north, where it landed at an airport near Hartford, Conn., at 1:30 p.m. Passengers on board were told they would be

Western powers would cause an “earthquake” in the Middle East if they intervened in Syria, President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview published yesterday, after protesters demanded outside protection from a crackdown that has killed 3,000 people. Syrian officials were to hold more talks in Qatar with delegates of the Arab League, which wants to convene a dialogue in Cairo between the Syrian authorities and their opponents. The League’s two-week deadline for the planned dialogue to start expired yesterday, with Assad showing no signs of easing the crackdown, which is

Syria, as Assad noted in his interview with Britain’s Sunday Telegraph, sits at the heart of the volatile Middle East, where it borders Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan. “It is the faultline, and if you play with the ground, you will cause an earthquake,” he said. “Do you want to see another Afghanistan, or tens of Afghanistans?” Assad’s remarks signal determination to hang onto power against a popular uprising that repression has failed to crush. Can Romney step out of Cain’s growing shadow? JOHN GURZINSKI/AFP/GETTY IMAGES
As race to unseat Obama heats up, front-runners find themselves neck and neck in major Iowa opinion poll
Herman Cain, foreground, has lately come to eclipse former Gov. Mitt Romney.
Republican White House hopefuls Herman Cain and Mitt Romney are in a tight race in Iowa, which kicks off next year’s presidential nominating contests, according to a closely watched opinion poll published at the weekend. The poll conducted for The Des Moines Register showed Cain, a conservative businessman, with the support of 23 percent of Republicans surveyed. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had 22 percent, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul 12 percent in the race to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 2012 election.
Historic value In 2008, the Iowa Poll correctly predicted wins for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in the Republican contest and Obama, then a senator, in the Democratic caucus.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has stumbled in debates and on the campaign trail after a fast start, scored only 7 percent support. The Iowa caucuses will take place on Jan. 3, the first of the state-by-state contests to choose a party presidential nominee. The poll showed Minnesota Rep. Michele Bach-
mann fading after running neck and neck with Romney in the June Iowa poll. Bachmann dropped to 8 percent and fourth place in the new poll. Neither Cain nor Romney has spent much time campaigning in Iowa. Romney, who has just four paid staff and a consultant in the state, has rarely visited Iowa since a second-place finish in the caucuses in 2008 wounded his campaign. Iowa has a large bloc of conservative voters distrustful of Romney’s past support of abortion rights and a Massachusetts health care overhaul that was a precursor of Obama’s federal law. REUTERS

MBA degree really adds up: Research Forget that major in art history If you really want to find a job, smart money is betting on a business degree right now Hiring is up: Survey While young Americans under the age of 30 are the hardest hit by unemployment, there is a glimmer of hope for one particular group of them: MBA graduates. Recent research shows that the class of 2011 has much better employment prospects than the last two classes before it. According to a report by the Graduate Management Admission Council, more companies are now hiring, and more of them are recruiting on campus. Data show that 57 percent of graduates who

earned an MBA in 2011 reported getting job offers — a figure similar to the prerecession rate. The survey polled 1,509 employers in 51 countries. And only 4 percent of companies surveyed reported that they’re not planning to hire this year. That's an improvement from 8 percent in 2010 and 13 percent in 2009. According to the report, the proportion of companies with plans to hire new MBA graduates in 2011 has increased across all industries, most notably in the manufacturing, nonprof-
it/government, high technology, finance/accounting, and products and services sectors of the marketplace. The demand is expected to be highest for people with MBAs in finance and accounting. Health care and pharmaceutical, consulting, and high technology industries are also in high demand. “The post-recession recovery is gaining momentum as companies turn more toward growth,” said the report. Pattinson a married man? PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
In honor of Halloween, let’s check in with Vampire-in-Chief Robert Pattinson, shall we? (Tune in tomorrow for an update on Director of Zombie Special Projects Lindsay Lohan — we just couldn’t handle her today.) While promoting “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” at a press conference over the weekend, Pattinson speculated that he and costar/girlfriend Kristen Stewart may already be married. “The wedding scene’s funny because we used a real priest,” said the actor, according to UsMagazine.com. “So technically we are already married because he did all the things you would do in a normal ceremony. So we don’t have a civil union in law, but I guess in the church we are actually married.”

“Cherub”
David McCallum You may recognize this offkilter instrumental thanks to DJ Shadow sampling it on his track “Dark Days.” But the 1967 original, with its introductory groans and building organ, lends to a feeling that you’re running from a terrible monster.
Butthole Surfers This song from these Texas weirdos has a quality that almost makes it seem like a glimpse into the haunted thoughts of a psychopath. Gibby Haynes laughs maniacally against nauseous guitars and screams things like, “I see bodies!”
“I Walked with a Zombie” Roky Erickson
“Me and the Devil Blues” Robert Johnson
A lot of Halloween music is just downright silly — “I Was a Teenage Werewolf,” “Monster Mash,” etc. Though this title sounds like it could fall into that trap, it escapes that fate, mostly because Erickson actually comes across like he believes that he did, in fact, walk with a zombie.
Another narrator who sounds like he believes his otherworldly subject matter, this track is violent, morose, and proves that delta blues is way scarier than metal. Johnson is one of those artists, like Glenn Danzig, where if you play anything by him, it can terrify any visitor.
The Continuum of Breast Cancer Risk, Treatment and Survivorship in Women Under 40 Presented by NYU Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated Cancer Center In this program (supported by the Barbara Hope Foundation, Inc.), our experts will discuss risk assessment, screening and therapeutic considerations for women under 40 who have or are at risk for breast cancer. The best protocol for treating these young women has not yet been established, but the approach to systemic therapy is continuously evolving. Younger women with cancer also face particular issues and concerns about fertility preservation and long-term treatment effects. The unique hardships young breast cancer survivors may go through as a result of their treatment will be discussed as well.

Budding actor Justin Timberlake blows up in the new sci-fi thriller ‘In Time’ Why this ex-teen pop star says he’s happy to be getting older
P
What a nice looking pair: Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried star in sci-fi thriller “In Time.”
laying the hero in “In Time” — a sci-fi adventure set in a world where people stop aging at 25 and have to earn time to stay alive — has given Justin Timberlake a lot of chances to think about time, including being stuck with a certain look. “I look back as a lot of my younger years have been documented and I can honestly say that I would not like to revisit,” says the musician-turned-actor. “So I’m perfectly fine with aging.” Of course he says that now, at age 30 — and playing a convincing 25 on screen. Maybe he’ll change his tune after another 10 or 20 years. But for now, movies like “In Time” are

The Occupy Wall Street connection A major theme of “In Time” is taking on an elite that controls all the resources in society — something that finds resonance with the current Occupy Wall Street movement as the film hit theaters. Of course it was all planned this way, jokes Amanda Seyfried, claiming that Niccol “actually said when we were shooting the movie, ‘They’re going to occupy Wall Street like, the next year when this comes out. I think this is a great time to make it.’”
helping keep him young, especially considering all the action involved. “I got to live out a lot of boyhood fantasies in this movie — shooting guns and getting to learn how to stunt drive,” he says, grinning. Given the time-sensitive nature of the film, there was, of course, lots of running involved — which was fine for Timberlake, but not so much his co-star, Amanda Seyfried, who did most of the chases in high heels. It was a necessity for the plot as well as for practical reasons, though, Timberlake jokes. “We debated actually in the middle of a scene her taking the heels off and just running without them, but she would
have gotten lost in the frame,” he says, teasing his diminutive leading lady. One pitfall of high-concept action thrillers is that they can be overly expositional, and that was something Timberlake was keen to watch out for, consulting Andrew Niccol, the film’s writer, director and producer, about paring down the script. “I felt like we would take lines out because it’s always nicer when you can play out a scene and it can read without dialogue,” Timberlake says. Saves more time for the shooting and driving, at least. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Brian Williams is anchor and managing editor of “Rock Center.”
It’s a new kind of newsmagazine Unlike other newsmagazine programs like “60 Minutes,” “Rock Center” will be telecast live, from Studio 3B in Rockefeller Center, every week. “It has the opportunity to be more timely and more relevant and more responsive to what’s in the news, what’s in the national conversation, than an hourlong documentary-style show,” says David Corvo, senior executive producer of “Rock Center.” “You’ll see a different kind of magazine that will be fronted by one person with a curious and intense relationship with the news and the trust of his audience.”
It’s definitely Brian Williams’ showcase “Brian is the managing editor of this program,” says Rome Hartman, “Rock Center” executive producer, “and it will reflect his sensibility. I’ve said this ought to feel like Brian’s playlist.” As curator of the news series, Williams will not be reporting every story. But the “Nightly News” anchor ensures every report is in good hands. “These are friends and coworkers of mine,” he says of the show’s correspondents, “and at the conclusion of the story they tell, we’re going to probably sit around and talk about it. There will be questions that will kind of pop into all of our heads as we watch these pieces.”
About those (awardwinning) familiar faces ... Correspondents signed on to the series include Harry Smith, Kate Snow, Ted Koppel, Meredith Vieira, Natalie Morales, Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Richard Engel and Dr. Nancy Snyderman. “It’s been very exciting around here,” says Williams. “We’re hiring people to put journalism on television. And you don’t get to start something like this more than once or twice in your lifetime.” In addition to that all-star roster, Williams says “there are still some people on the whiteboard in my head who I think could really, really turn some heads” if they were to join the program. “After 2 weeks, my blood sugar went from 180 to 112 and stayed there!”
Heart Surgeon Hails “Antioxidant” Diabetic Drink as ‘A Miracle’!
Naturally improves blood sugar, cholesterol, circulation, energy and more in as little as 2 weeks! What part of your diabetes would you like to see ‘go away?’ Are you plagued by weight gain and food cravings, high and low blood sugar levels, mood swings, low energy and constant fatigue, poor circulation, vision problems, pain or aggravating bouts of brain fog or memory lapses? There is good news and it comes in the form of a ‘fizzy’, drink called OPC Factor™, which quickly revitalizes your entire body and mind! Better Blood Sugar The ‘miracle’ is found in the powerful blend of antioxidants called oligomeric proanthocyanadins, better known as OPCs. They include resveratrol, grape seed, pine bark, lemon bioflavonoids, green tea, and 23 naturally occurring vitamins and enzymes. Medical Director and Heart surgeon of the Heart, Diabetes, and Weight Loss Centers of NY, Dr. Fred Vagnini, MD, FACS says, “Antioxidants may slow down the progress of pre-Diabetes.” OPC Factor™ greatly improves total body circulation promoting faster blood flow; crucial for diabetics,” says Vagnini. "OPC Factor™ has helped lower my glucose levels. I sleep better and have more energy and better circulation,” says Charles Leavitt. “Excess sugar in your blood causes oxidation and inflammation which contribute to slow sticky blood. Additionally, cellular damage leads to eye, kidney, nerve, and blood vessel damage.
No More Horse Pills! “Pills and tablets have an absorption rate as low as 2 to 20 percent,” says Dr. Vagnini. OPC Factor™ is the first 100% organic formula fueled by a revolutionary,high-speed Isotonic ‘liquid’ delivery system. It mimics the body’s pH; having the same pH levels as blood and tears, the nutrients readily absorb at amazing 97% rate! Results in Minutes! Actual blood scans taken twenty minutes apart show how the OPC Factor™ formula virtually flushes away free radicals, excess cholesterol crystals and sugar molecules in the bloodstream. Unhealthy Blood Before
Healthy Blood After
Washes away blood sludge by eliminating toxins, free radicals, and even parasites!
OPC Factor™ works 20-50 times better than traditional antioxidants against dangerous oxidation; helping insulin to work more effectively. “My doctor said, "I don't know what you're doing, but keep doing it." says Teresa Wood, from WA.
“I started taking OPC Factor and approximately a week after, I went back and had my blood checked. My blood sugar had dropped from about a 180 down to a 112. I had been having back problems and it seemed to resolve that. The thing that I've noticed the most is the lack of back pain. I've just felt good this past year.” rejoices Doyle Allen, ID.
National Institute Of Health Study Proves It! “I can feel it when I drink it. It gives a lot of energy.”says Ken Murdock. A recent National Institute of Health funded “Double Blind” clinical study published in July, supports customer claims about energy. David Payne, a diabetic from Texas, echoes this, "Since taking OPC FactorTM, my blood sugar is easier to manage. It boosted my immune system and even helped my cholesterol." Receive One-Month Free! Try OPC FactorTM risk-free today and receive a free 30-Day Bonus supply along with a free book, The Aging Antidote. We certainly should — it’s good for business and for morale Quick tips for communicating better and earning trust at work
S
ometimes, there is a definitive, neatly wrapped culprit for why a workplace is unhappy or unproductive — or, more often, both. But often, says consultant and author Dennis Reina, problems can be traced back to a more elusive source: lack of trust. “Trust is not just a nice thing to have — it’s sound business. When people are not communicating openly with each other, when they’re missing deadlines or withholding information and not admitting mistakes, clients don’t get served,” says Reina, who along with his wife and business partner Michelle Reina authored “Rebuilding Trust in the Workplace” and “Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace.” “Trust is one of those things that’s often taken for granted, until it becomes a problem.” And when it does become a problem, a lack of trust can ruin a job or even a business. “When these issues aren’t addressed, it becomes simply, ‘that’s the way it is around here,’” says Reina. “The good talent walks out the door, or

“We spend most of our waking hours at work, and because of this, people want to know that it makes a dif-
ference to someone, somehow, somewhere. Specifically acknowledging a specific performance really speaks volumes.” Admit when you make a mistake: “When you admit

Taboo topics to avoid in the workplace
ost of us know never to discuss politics and religion at work, but there are other topics that are equally as taboo. These subjects are off-limits around the boss, and even around the watercooler. Relationship status A recent survey conducted by Adecco polled more than 800 Americans and revealed that 23 percent find relationship status to be the most taboo topic in the office. According to the survey, relationship status is even more uncomfortable to talk about than politics (chosen as most taboo by 16 percent surveyed) and religion (which was No. 1 for 10 percent of those polled). The takeaway: Save talk about breakups and makeups for your friends and family.
to company morale.” Of course it’s also wise to avoid talking about how attractive you find a co-worker. Socioeconomic status Ben Dattner is the author of “The Blame Game,” a book that explores the psychology of pointing the finger at work. Dattner finds that discussing your lavish lifestyle in the office can cause a rift between employees. “If you let co-workers know that you are spending the holidays at your family’s 55,000square-foot ski chalet in Aspen, or even that you own your home while they rent theirs, they will likely have a hard time relating to you and may even resent you,” says Dattner. We must vote the greedy out I think the Occupy Wall Street group has spelled out what most of the middle class deems credible: Big business and the banks have played “gotcha” with us for too long and we’re just plain fed up with being nickel and dimed to death. The government bails them out yet they find huge sums of money to pay retirees and bonuses as we try to “play by the rules” while financiers and big business continue to rake it all in on the backs of middle-class workers.

OWS seems to be cleansed of guilt every time their spokesperson releases a statement saying they don’t condone violence, drug use, etc — despite the fact that they have vandalized, threatened, stole, abused drugs and been a general public menace. War budget is a real killer RE: GOP WANTS TO CUT $2T”:
Cutting over $1 trillion should not be done to programs that help the sickest, oldest and youngest in our country. Instead, cut the largest section of discretionary spending, the Pentagon budget — which is about 50 percent of every income tax dollar!

Taurus April 20-May 20. All the wishing in the world won’t make things happen the way you want them to, so if it’s possible, put off all important events until another day. Gemini May 21-June 20. Before you rely on any gossip, check out everything yourself. Regardless of how long it takes to verify something, it’s vital that you don’t take at face value what is being said. Cancer June 21-July 22. If your resources aren’t being prudently managed, there is a chance you could respond in a way that could be costly at a later date. Take time to figure things out. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Even if you know what changes need to be implemented concerning your family, you could let haste push you into making a major gaffe. Slow down and think carefully. Giants look listless, uninspired against hapless Dolphins Pull out victory in fourth quarter nonetheless Cruz comes up big down the stretch GIANTS 20 | DOLPHINS 17
Up next: at Patriots
Nov. 13: at 49ers
Victor Cruz jumps over former Giant Will Allen (25) on his way to scoring the game-winning touchdown.
The Giants entered Sunday’s game coming off a bye, but from the start it looked as if they were still on vacation. Judging by their tight 20-17 win, it appeared that the Giants (5-2) were almost bored in facing a Dolphins (0-7) team starving for its first win. It wasn’t until the 5:58 mark of the fourth quarter that the Giants took their first lead of the game when Eli Manning found Victor Cruz for a 25-yard touchdown reception on third-and-13. The young wideout broke a tackle and raced to the end zone, capping a six-play, 53-yard drive with his patented end zone salsa dance. “I’m happy for the win. Our objective was to come out of here 5-2 and we are,” Coughlin said. “Eli made some big plays, obviously, as we threw the ball a lot today. He gave us big plays when we had to have them.” TONY WILLIAMS sports@metro.us

Manning becoming ‘elite’ QB Manning has thrown for 300 yards three times this year. GETTY IMAGES
Maybe Eli Manning was right to compare himself to Tom Brady after all. Manning was near flawless for the second-straight week as he went 31-of-45 for 349 yards and two touchdowns in rallying the Giants from an 11-point first-half deficit. It was the second game in a row in which the hot-and-cold Manning didn’t commit a turnover. It was also Man-

ning’s highest passing total in a win this season. “When we prepare I don’t look at the opposing team’s record. I look at their scheme, what they do and what other teams have done against them,” Manning said, adding he doesn’t mind when the game plan falls on his shoulders. “They [Dolphins] did a lot of good things defensively that gave us some
problems. We didn’t run the ball real well and had to throw it a little bit more than we wanted to but we’re capable of doing that.” Head coach Tom Coughlin said he’d rather have offensive balance, but will take the win. He added he’ll look at the game as glass half-filled because a win is a win in this parity-driven league. TONY WILLIAMS

The last thing a team struggling to find its identity needs is a nationally televised match against one of the NHL’s pre-eminent teams. That is exactly what beckons for the 3-3-3 Rangers, when they welcome the Sharks to the new MSG tonight. San Jose has won the first five games of its six-game road trip, including a 3-2 comefrom-behind overtime win on the Island on Saturday night. The Sharks have allowed the third-fewest

goals in the league. “They’re playing at home. From what I understand, they lost [Saturday afternoon],” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said of the Rangers after the win at the Nassau Coliseum Saturday night. “I don’t think they’ll be a happy group. “We’re going to have to work against that team.” For a group that prided

itself on its collective work ethic last year, the Rangers’ have not yet played a complete game in 2011-12. Sustained forechecking has been replaced by a team attempting to play a skill game that it is ill-suited for. Factor in a 38-35-11 mark at the Garden in the last 84 regular season games and you have a formula that leads to disappointment. Or as one fan disgustedly bellowed during the third period of Thursday night’s home opener, “Go back on the road.” DENIS GORMAN
