Union Square ATMs targeted in scam MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Prosecutors charged three Canadians yesterday with stealing Chase Bank customers’ debit card information in a data-theft scam involving hidden ATM cameras. Nikolai Ivanov, 31, Dimitar Stamatov, 28, and Ior-

dan Ivanov, 24, used an illegal “skimming” device to obtain customers’ bank identification, and then used those stolen debit card numbers for a $285,000 spending spree, prosecutors allege. The defendants alleged-

ly drove from Quebec to plant 11 skimming devices at four ATMs around Union Square, stealing data from 1,500 ATM cards and buying things like food, electronics and gas during trips to Arizona, Illinois and Canada.

A hidden ATM camera

The defendants allegedly slid a green plastic device into the slot where users dip their ATM cards. The device then obtained card numbers by reading the magnetic strip, while a hidden camera recorded users’ PINs. METRO/AB

New flooding risk predicted for city New report says flooding threat in future years worse than previously thought Subways may fill with water in just 40 minutes, experts warn EMMANUEL DUNAND/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

Within decades, New York subway tunnels could be flooded in under an hour during a major storm, according to a new report released yesterday. Another storm like Tropical Storm Irene could cripple the subway system and flood JFK and LaGuardia airports, predicted researchers from Columbia University’s Earth Institute, Cornell University and the City University of New York in the report. By 2020, the sea levels around Manhattan could rise by 10 inches. Researchers warned of a possible four-foot rise in sea levels by 2080, if the glaciers continue to melt at their current rate, the scientists said. That would jeopardize the entire New York City subway system, they warned, putting it at risk of extreme flooding every 10 years. Right now the system is at risk of extreme flooding every 100 years. New York City has long been reported as at risk for flooding, but yesterday’s report crystallized just how quickly low-lying areas of the city, such as nearly all of Lower Manhattan, could be underwater. “After 40 minutes of rain the entire subway system could be underwater,” Columbia scientist Klaus Jacob said in the report, com-

What to expect Researchers predict the following will happen: By 2020, nearly 96,000 people on Long Beach could be at risk of flooding. By mid-2020, the sea levels around Manhattan and Long Island could rise by

10 inches. Extreme rain could also put the drinking water system at risk. Researchers said the MTA should invest in more pumps to vacuum water out of the system, and barriers that would keep water from rushing in through sidewalk grates. METRO/AB

NEW YORK. The city’s Health Department will survey children about their health a decade after the Sept. 11 attacks, it announced yesterday. New York braces for OWS march today

EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN/METRO

Protesters say they are ready to get arrested NYPD, MTA and Homeland Security forces stand at the ready

Subway shutdown? Protesters plan to “occupy” the following stations at 3 p.m. today: Bronx: Fordham Road Yankee Stadium Brooklyn: Broadway Junction Borough Hall Queens: Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue Jamaica Center-ParsonsArcher Manhattan: 125th Street A,B,C,D station Union Square 23rd Street/Eighth Avenue Staten Island: St. George, Staten Island Ferry Terminal

Protesters say they are prepared to be arrested en masse for their cause today. Approximately 25 Occupy Wall Street members met at 60 Wall Street yesterday to discuss their willingness to be arrested when they take to the streets this morning as part of their International Day of Action. The protesters will attempt to march to the New York Stock Exchange at 7 a.m. On their way, they say they will “confront Wall Street with the stories of people on the frontlines of economic injustice,” according to OccupyWallSt.org.

“I think a lot of people are going to come out violent. Bloomberg and the cops started something they didn’t want to get started.” DEMETRIUS WYMAN, PROTESTER

The NYPD and the MTA are preparing for the worst. Last night more than 20 NYPD squad cars gathered at Battery Park to prepare for the protesters’ march. Department of

Homeland Security vehicles and two NYPD mobile command units — vans carrying officers and police technology — were also on hand. “The protesters are calling for a massive event aimed at disrupting major parts of the city,” Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson said yesterday. “Everything that we have seen and heard suggests that we may have tens of thousands of people tomorrow protesting,” he added.

An OWS protester cheers after he was let back into Zuccotti Park Tuesday night.

Comptroller under heat after fundraiser arrested

Metro Magic toy drive

Man who allegedly raised funds for Liu arrested for fraud Might dim Liu’s mayoral hopes Under pressure to explain donations as feds probe GETTY IMAGES

Liu’s hopes to be mayor could be dashed by allegations of campaign finance fraud.

A fundraiser for city Comptroller John Liu, one of the names often floated as a contender to be the next New York City mayor, was arrested yesterday in the midst of a federal investigation into his campaign fundraising. Xing Wu Pan, 46, was arrested and charged with attempted wire fraud and conspiracy. The New York Times reported that many people listed as having donated to Liu did not remember giving money. This prompted allegations that people might have signed others’ names to donations, so that they could donate more than

the legal limit. Officials say Pan was a bundler for Wu, or a person who gathers contributions from a group of people. He’s accused of funneling illegal contributions to Liu’s campaign. According to the Times, Pan helped connect a person who wanted to donate $16,000 to Liu, which is more than three times the legal limit. In a statement he gave to the Times, Liu said, “If it is true then the conduct was clearly wrong and my campaign was not told the truth.” ALISON BOWEN

Ex-broker charged in $200K scam A 24-year-old ex-stockbroker working out of his Brooklyn home stole more than $200,000 from unsuspecting victims, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said yesterday, after announcing the indictment of Boris Shteyngart for running a securities scam. Shteyngart was a legit stockbroker until 2009, when he was stripped of his brokerage license for misconduct. That’s when, says the DA’s office, he started cold-calling people across the nation. He said he called them in the past with a great deal they missed out on and offered “a second chance to invest with him.

O-no-bama: Romney up in NH poll Driven down by economic forces, President Barack Obama is running poorly in New Hampshire, a state he carried in 2008 and one that has been a swing state in recent presidential elections. Obama trails Republican Mitt Romney among likely general election voters in the state by 10 percentage points in a hypothetical contest amid voter discontent with the president’s job performance and the economy, according to a Bloomberg poll conducted Nov. 10-11. Obama carried New Hampshire by 54 percent to 45 percent in 2008. Independent voters in the state, the site of the nation’s first presidential pri-

Bieber baby suit dropped but not over

LOOK WHAT’S HAPPENING!

The woman who claimed teen singer Justin Bieber fathered a baby with her has dropped her paternity lawsuit, but Mariah Yeater’s lawyer said yesterday she is pursuing her claim out of court. Yeater, 20, of southern California, had claimed in her lawsuit that she had sex backstage with the 17year-old Canadian singer last year and that he was the father of her baby who was born in July. She was demanding child support. Bieber has repeatedly denied the allegation, saying he never met Yeater but said last week he would take a paternity test. Chicago attorney Jeffery

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich acknowledged yesterday that he had received consulting fees from troubled mortgage giant Freddie Mac for providing “strategic advice.” Campaigning in Iowa, Gingrich said he did not believe he was contracted by the government-owned housing finance giant as a friendly voice who would avoid criticizing it.

“She believes Justin Bieber is the father. Negotiations are going on right now with Bieber’s counsel.” LEVING Leving said that Yeater had dropped the lawsuit but had a new legal team and hoped to reach a private settlement with Bieber’s lawyers. “This matter is not over,” Leving said. It was not clear why the paternity lawsuit was dropped, but Leving said Yeater had received death threats and was being harassed by the media. REUTERS

It’s been an emotional few weeks for Penn State students.

Penn State names board member to oversee athletics Penn State yesterday named as acting head of its shattered athletic department a member of the university board that forced out the previous athletic director after he was charged with covering up a child sex abuse scandal. David M. N 48-HOUR DISTRIBUTION: These seldom seen full uncut sheets of new $1 bills are being moved from the private vaults of the World Reserve Monetary Exchange for immediate distribution to NYC area residents. Residents who beat the 48-hour order deadline to get the vault stacks containing three protective bankers portfolios for just twenty-nine dollars per portfolio are getting the valuable uncut sheets of never circulated $1 bills for just face value. That’s a real steal because only the first 6,049 residents whose zip code appears on the Distribution List are getting the Vault Stacks full of real money just by calling 1-888-248-7476 to beat the 48-hour deadline.

to the left are the Vault Stacks containing three protective bankers portfolios, each loaded with a valuable uncut sheet of never circulated $1 bills. It’s impossible to predict how much the bills will be worth in the future. But, since the Gov’t has already shut down printing in 2006 on some uncut sheets of money, smart collectors are snatching up all the valuable uncut sheets of Gov’t issued money they can get their hands on, so you better believe at just twenty-nine dollars and shipping the bankers portfolio is a real steal since the first 6,049 callers who beat the 48-hour order deadline are getting the valuable U.S. Gov’t issued uncut sheet of money for just face value.

UMS – NYC area residents who find their zip code on the Distribution List will feel like they just won the lottery. That’s because for the next 48 hours, full uncut sheets of never circulated $1 bills are being released by the World Reserve not to banks, not to dealers and not just to the rich and famous, but directly to NYC area residents who beat the order deadline. The only thing residents need to do is look for their zip code on the Distribution List printed in today’s publication. If their zip code appears on the list, they need

to immediately call the Distribution Hotline before the 48-hour deadline to get the Vault Stack containing three protective bankers portfolios each loaded with its own full uncut sheet of never circulated $1 bills. But only the first 6,049 residents whose zip code appears on the Distribution List can even get the Vault Stacks containing three protective bankers portfolios full of real money. “The money is being released until our last remaining uncut sheets of $1 bills are completely gone,” said Jefferson Marshall, Executive Director of the

private World Reserve. “That’s why we’ve set up a Toll Free Distribution Hotline to make sure residents get them now,” he said. “But everything in our vault may soon be gone. So residents who want to get the uncut sheets of never circulated $1 bills had better hurry and call right now,” Marshall said. Those who get in on this now will be the really smart ones. Just think what they could be worth someday. “Rare uncut sheets of real Gov’t issued currency have

sold at prestigious auction houses for thousands of dollars. Currency values always fluctuate, and there are never any guarantees. But at just twenty-nine dollars the bankers portfolio is a real steal since the first 6,049 callers who beat the 48-hour deadline are getting the valuable U.S. Gov’t issued uncut sheet of money for just face value,” Marshall said. “You would expect to only see uncut money sheets on display in the Oval Office or under guard at the Smithsonian,” he said. “In fact, they are so seldom

seen, banks don’t even have them. That’s why I’ve issued a directive to release a limited number of never circulated uncut sheets of valuable $1 bills from our private vault reserve to residents of the NYC area. Residents whose zip code is not on the Distribution List can’t have our Vault Stacks of these full uncut sheets of $1 bills,” Marshall said. “These full uncut sheets of $1 bills will be highly sought after and are extremely popular to hand out as gifts for friends and family. They are sure to be this year’s

hottest Christmas gift,” he said. Most people have never even seen one of these full uncut sheets of four never circulated bills. “We’re bracing for all the calls. With just hours left, we’re doing our best to make sure NYC area residents get through. But, it is important that residents find their zip code on the Distribution List and call the Toll Free Hotline right away to beat the deadline. Because when our release is over, it’s over,” he said. “We’re allowing residents

whose zip code appears on the Distribution List to claim as many as 10 Vault Stacks. But, since you can’t get these Vault Stacks containing three protective bankers portfolios full of uncut sheets of money at banks, credit unions or even the Federal Reserve the limits will be strictly enforced,” Marshall said. “So, residents who want these full uncut sheets of real money need to call right now. If lines are busy keep trying, we promise to answer all calls,” he said. N

Protestors march through the downtown Los Angeles financial district on Nov. 5, 2011 — what they called Bank Transfer Day. The event was a national effort to get people to move their money from large corporate banks into smaller banks or credit unions.

The next year might be a particularly bad one for the nation’s largest banks if they don’t begin to address their customers’ needs more proactively. The 10 largest banks in the U.S. are in danger of losing $185 billion in deposits during the next 12 months as more customers get fed up and choose to bank elsewhere, according to a new report from cg42, a boutique management consulting firm. Much of that will come from the four biggest banks in the country — Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citibank and Wells Fargo — which are projected to lose a combined $135 billion in that time period. Cg42’s predictions are based on surveys conducted earlier this year with

waived through direct deposits or online banking requirements, a source familiar with the bank plans told MainStreet. The bank will also call off a $15 monthly checking account fee that could only be waived if a customer maintains a minimum daily balance of at least $1,500, or a combined $5,000 in deposit and investment accounts. more than 5,000 customers from the 10 largest banks and found that 8.7 percent said they were likely to switch banks. The researchers then used data for the total retail deposits in 2010 — just more than

$2 trillion — to come up with an estimate for how much these banks collectively stand to lose. What is unclear though is whether all that lost revenue will go to credit unions and banks other than those listed here, or whether it will simply be redistributed among the 10 biggest as customers switch from one big-name bank to another. Given the recent wave of consumers switching to credit unions, the big banks certainly have reason to worry that it may be the former. But either way, the data clearly show that the largest banks are in for a turbulent 2012. CONTRIBUTED BY

‘Nothing will come of nothing’ JOAN MARCUS

The Bard’s quote is a useful note for anyone tackling ‘King Lear’ It’s not enough to let the play rest on its four hours of laurels Purists believe that the only way to do Shakespeare is to be straightforward and unedited; in the case of James Macdonald’s “King Lear” at the Public, the direct delivery of the play is its downfall. Clocking in a nearly four hours, the hefty production begs for a swift delivery and enticing visuals. But the first act sloughs through the story’s setup, which many viewers already know. The set is quite bare and simplistic, robbing us a sense of time and place but leaving us room to appreciate the striking lighting designed by Christopher Akerland. As the play progresses, props of previous scenes are left on the stage where

Those who do enjoy his escapades are left wanting when he disappears in the second act. It’s a sad showing from a company that’s frequently renowned for its Shakespeare. We recommend that you stay home to pick an insensible, endless fight with your own family — it will be cheaper, and probably everyone won’t die at the end.

‘The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs’ was updated to reflect Jobs’ recent passing Walk away understanding the Apple founder to his core “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs,” Mike Daisey’s timely one-man show, centers on the life (and, as an afterthought, death) of Steve Jobs and the shady practices surrounding the technology whiz’s iconic business conglomerate. The writer-actor’s infectious enthusiasm and love for his subject is the piece de resistance that invests us in the allegory and makes its grimness even harder to bear. It takes us from the shallow comforts of our warm computer screen glow to the bowels of China where anything Apple is built on the backs of workers of whose ages are as questionable as the company’s ethics. Daisey parcels our

medicine about the dark side to this IT titan in a spoonful of candy-like anecdotes that we can’t stop gorging on. It’s the rare balance of information and comedy that’s key to hooking audiences in the Jon Stewart news world. The monologue runs nearly two hours without an intermission. Though there’s minimal staging (a light board, table and chair), and Daisey remains seated throughout, the performance comes off as a physical feat. The material is a high-wire balancing act best left to one who understands comedic timing, audience tolerance

and energy allotment — such as its author. The one downside is that it’s missing the firm hand of an editor who isn’t too close to the source. There’s no doubt that a slightly tighter script would seal the seams on a nearly flawless show. Understandably, Jobs’ sudden passing just over a week before opening night meant that the play’s ending was abruptly tweaked — and doubled in

weight sheerly by the burden of context — but the dramatic judgment passed in the last minutes could benefit from a delivery as curt as it is acrid and astute. T. MICHELLE MURPHY

9 Today, people have uninhibited access to platforms, channels and tools to express themselves at will. That group’s voice, employed individually or collectively, can reach the masses to organize gamechanging movements across the world. Yet, despite the universal potential for connectivity, businesses are still struggling to understand the real impact of connected consumerism. On a basic level, consumers need to feel that they are being heard, that action is taken on their behalf. Gaining followers on Twitter or Likes on Facebook is one thing — but to connect and foster real relationships, organizations must learn how to listen and adapt to consumer engagement. The reality is that society and technology evolve faster than a brand’s ability to adapt. The good news is

Laws of consumer affinity in the digital age Author Brian Solis of research-based advisory firm Altimeter Group explains what businesses need to understand about online consumer behavior in order to be successful you have a role in defining where things go next. It all begins with attracting the attention of connected consumers and delivering consistent value to ultimately earn their affinity. Today’s biggest trends — the mobile Web, social media, gamification, real-time — are changing the landscape for business, government, media and consumerism. However, as consumers become better at personalizing their online experiences, they reevaluate the people, organizations and information with whom they choose to connect. Therefore, the keys to long-term engagement and relationships are intelligence, empathy and resilience. Although this is the end of business as usual, it’s also the beginning of a new era of visibility. Businesses now have the opportunity to become relevant in new chan-

The laws:

1

Identify where connected consumer attention is focused.

2

Define a higher purpose — genuine intentions that will attract connected consumers and give them something to align with.

3

Establish an identity and a presence worthy of affiliation. Give people something to believe in — something exciting to be a part of.

4

Design your engagement strategies to be beneficial and shareable — this is, after all, about shared experiences.

5

Localize the value, content, storefront and engagement program to match the culture and

activity within each direct-to-consumer (D2C) community.

6

This isn’t a power play; stay consistent and dedicated through meaningful interaction.

Remain true to the original mission and intention. Do not be swayed by short-term temptations.

Recognize and reward community participants — reciprocity is a strong pillar of community relationships.

Connected consumers discover and communicate differently than their traditional consumer counterparts. To connect with them, companies must identify potential challenges, trends, POVs and interests. To adapt, organizations need to examine the impact of technology on consumer behavior, and to understand its effect on consumer decision-making and peer influence. To attract consumers and earn their loyalty, businesses must follow the “Laws of Attraction and Affinity.” BRIAN SOLIS FOR MASHABLE

SHOULD I SLEEP WITH HIM ON THE FIRST DATE? GETTY IMAGES

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds might be going strong in their relationship — having been spotted enjoying a cozy meal together in Boston this past weekend — but it wasn’t too long ago that they had their first date. Even a celebrity has to consider that all pervasive question: Should I sleep with him on the first date? Like anyone at the beginning of a relationship, you have to ask yourself what you want out of the relationship. Will he/she still call in the morning, whatever you decide?

before the date so you can take responsibility and practice safe sex. This way you won’t wind up feeling pressured or caught off guard, which can lead to taking risks. But if this is a guy you’d really like to get to know better and would like to see again, it may be best to hold off on getting sexually involved — many times first-date sex for guys means something entirely different from what it means to women. The guys can have sex and consider it a “great date,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they want to get to know you better. In fact, for some guys the sexual encounter may be enough for them — and then they are ready to move on and meet someone new. So, unless you are completely comfortable with the fact that you may never hear from the guy again, and that’s fine with you, you are probably better off waiting — at least for date No. 2!

NO. KEEP YOUR FEELINGS TO YOURSELF!

Ladies, you’ve been slacking. Unfortunately, the bedroom is still a place where the men tend to dominate in a heterosexual relationship, according to dating expert Amber Madison. “We tend to look at sex as this male thing,” she says. “It’s like, ‘If I’m pissed at him, I’m not having sex with him.’ It’s looked at as this reward for a man rather than a relationship thing.” Madison recently published her book “Are All

Guys A—holes?,” in which she did field research — interviewing 1,000 guys in 10 cities. What she found was surprising. She asked men if they liked hearing feedback from women in the bed-

room and found that 58 percent of them love it. “Women should take more responsibility for their sexual pleasure and figure out what feels good for them and make sure in the bedroom that they communicate that,” she says. The sex and dating expert has recently endorsed the new “We-Vibe 3” — a couples’ vibrator that lacks the intimidation factor that can steer the squeamish away. “One of the things with

the We-Vibe brand is to be a discreet product,” says Sarah Bobas, the marketing and communications manager at We-Vibe. “You don’t want to walk in with something that off the bat makes your partner feel threatened. [The We-Vibe] enables us to get into the conversation without people getting shy or intimidated about what we’re talking about, which is just sexual intimacy, being closer to your partner.” SYLVIA ROXROY

Give thanks for these craft beers We know your mind is on gravy-making and pumpkin pie-baking But don’t forget to add beer to your shopping list Some expert recommendations

Having the right drink to accompany Thanksgiving dinner can make your meal all the more satisfying. According to Josh Schaffner, the founder and director of New York Craft Beer Week, a brewski is an optimal choice for next Thursday because its properties reflect those of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. “Beer is essentially liquid

bread,” he says. “So when you think of Thanksgiving, the base of stuffing is almost always bread, and then it’s flavored with additional things. Its mirror image is beer.” We got Schaffner’s top picks for what to serve alongside your turkey. MEREDITH ENGEL

Southampton Cuvee des Fleurs: “Just for the presentation factor, it’s easier if there’s a couple of bigger bottles at the center of the table to pass around, as opposed to everybody having a little bottle next to them. The Southampton Cuvee des

Fleurs is made in Long Island, and it is named as such because it uses a selection of different edible flowers as flavoring adjuncts. It’s also one of the drier beers.”

3

Brooklyn Brewery Local 1: “It’s kind of Brooklyn’s homage to Belgian strong golden ales. It’s very versatile

and there’s nothing that it’s really gonna conflict with that would appear on a Thanksgiving table.” Brooklyn Brewery Brooklyn Sorachi Ace: “If you enjoy a more spiced meal, I feel that [this] beer will stand up to that reasonably well.”

by one of the six remaining Trappist breweries of the world — it’s actually made by monks. The beer has a little bit of a wild and funky element to it — they add a type of wild yeast to the bottling in order to achieve a secondary fermentation and the resulting carbonation. Any bottle conditioned beer will have a more effervescent mouthfeel with finer carbonation; but because of the addition of the wild yeast, Orval also has a wonderfully unique flavor accenting the carbonation."

Josh Schaffner on holiday hops: “People generally gorge themselves during Thanksgiving, so it’s best to avoid very heavy, sugarladen beers. I like to lean toward beers that have a drier profile and that are also a bit more effervescent, meaning that the texture on your palate is one where the carbonation really pops, cleansing your palate.”

hen you think of meatballs, you might think of warm comfort food like mama used to make. But for Michael Chernow, co-owner of the popular Meatball Shop restaurants, baseball comes to mind. “Meatballs have been around forever, and the Yankees have been around forever,” Chernow says. “The Yankees never get old and continue to win, and meatballs never get old and they continue to win,” he laughs. Along with friend and coowner Daniel Holzman, the dynamic duo’s meatball business — they have two locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn — keeps hitting home runs. But, according to Chernow, the concept behind their success wasn’t always meatball bound. The pair originally

planned to go in together on a higher-end style restaurant. That all changed when they saw the venue. “The space had a bit of a side window that was directly next to a busy bar where there were patrons outside smoking cigarettes and chatting away,” Chernow remembers. “Daniel looked at that and said, ‘That’s a revenue stream right there.’” That’s when the idea of meatballs came rolling on through — and from there, so did the customers. Then the other locations. And now, finally, their new book, “The Meatball Shop Cookbook,” has hit stores. The cookbook contains over 20 meatball recipes, as well as sauces, sides, desserts and more. Winning, indeed. sally.morris@metro.us

An exclusive chat with a master blender Just what goes on when you create a new whisky? We talk with Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge to find out New this year for the label

At $40 a bottle, Johnnie Walker Double Black is an exclusive spirit at a reasonable price.

It’s not everyday you talk to a master blender of scotch whisky. It’s also not every day you can buy a bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black, as it’s only out for the holiday season. But luckily, in a rare interview, Metro was able to get master blender Jim Beveridge to discuss both — in his thick Scottish brogue, no less. “Well, it’s quite a lot, really,” he laughed when asked what a master blender does on a day-to-day basis. (To wit, he’s the man: he creates the whiskies you’ll be drinking now and in a few decades.) “The key

to the whole job is understanding the flavors and how they combine to create a great blend. That’s the first requirement.” Beveridge says the main job requirement is thinking about how flavors mix and express themselves as well as what kind of cask to let them mature in. But, as he notes, all master blenders have to have one eye on the future. “The whiskies for Black Label that are being distilled today will be in our warehouses for 12 years before it will be used, so I have to think ahead as well.” One of the whiskies Beveridge has had a hand in

creating is the aforementioned Johnnie Walker Double Black. For the spirit, Beveridge blends more of the Islay scotches into the blend so it’s more smoky than the regular Black Label. “The starting point is Johnnie Walker Black Label,” he explains about how he created the special blend. “So it has all of the complex flavors and mixture of fruitiness and sweet vanilla flavors and the classic smokiness of it; I like to think the Double Black as being dialed up a bit.” DOROTHY ROBINSON

If you go

Another worthy gift for the season Beveridge also created Johnnie Walker Blue Label, which, at $220 a bottle, is the rarest blend in the Walker portfolio. For the holiday season, you

can engrave a bottle with a printed or handwritten message. Buy a bottle and get the engraving done at their stand in Grand Central Terminal, Graybar Passage, from Monday through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

f there’s one thing about heavy metal that’s often overlooked, it’s that the music is as theatrically intense as it is sonically relentless. Take Mastodon, who returned this fall with “The Hunter” — a proper follow-up to the Atlanta metalheads’ critically acclaimed “Crack the Skye.” Not only does “The Hunter” include a download code for a nifty 3-D, interactive “Augmented Reality Experience” to play with, but the intricate cover also captures Mastodon’s rich, mythology-themed music. “You have to make a good representation of what’s on the inside on the outside,” co-guitarist and singer Bill Kelliher says. “We’re all fans of mythology and dinosaurs and big creatures — the unknown and weird things. All the things that 14-year-old boys are interested in.” Kelliher pauses, realizing that he just equated Mastodon with juveniles. He laughs: “We’re all still

On the ‘Hunt’ Artwork aside, it’s the music that galvanized critics to high praise when “The Hunter” emerged. “We’re doing the best we can,” says Kelliher. “We had a month before we left for a European tour. I didn’t think we were ready to go into the studio, but lo and behold, all of a sudden we had this amazing f—ing record. It was an outpouring of creativity.”

like kids in that way.” As an actual kid growing up in Rochester, N.Y., Kelliher would browse record stores — and more often than not, it was an album cover that got him hooked before the music. “I’d pick up the Agnostic Front records, or Iron Maiden’s, and think, ‘Wow, this must be awesome,’” he recalls. “You look at Slayer’s ‘Reign In Blood’ and think, ‘Wow, this is sick!’” Indeed, we do. “That’s what drew me in to listening to Iron Maiden or Slayer. It piques your curiosity. If there’s a dumb photo of the band on the cover you think, ‘What is this crap?’ That’s not interesting to me.” Mastodon with Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang Saturday, 8 p.m. Terminal 5, 610 W. 56th St. $30, 212-260-4700

Cruz avoids nightclub shooting GETTY IMAGES

The Giants must’ve had a horrific flashback early Tuesday morning when gunshots rang out in a New York nightclub. While the incident reportedly did not include anyone who represents Big Blue or anyone associated with Victor Cruz’s party, a life was lost and two more people are in stable condi-

tion after the fracas at the Juliet Supper Club — a popular hangout for local professional athletes. The ascending star wideout was celebrating his birthday, along with a handful of other teammates, including Hakeem Nicks, Aaron Ross, Antrel Rolle and Chris Canty, when the shooting occurred in the

wee hours of Tuesday morning. “I understand that’s the responsibility I chose and that comes with the territory,” Cruz said. “But as long as I don’t do anything boneheaded [like] start carrying guns or doing something crazy, I’ll be all right.” Tom Coughlin expressed disappointment in his play-

ers being in the wrong place at such a late hour. “The only one I heard about initially was Victor and thank God he was safe,” Coughlin said. “What happens good at 2:30, 3 in the morning? I’ve never been able to figure that one out … beyond that, it [their chat] is between he and I.”

Pressure rests on Sanchez’s shoulders ‘Sanchise’ feeling much of blame for rocky start to Jets season He grades himself only on his record Ryan is confident his QB is a winner

With less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ loss to New England, MetLife Stadium was empty but for some celebrating Patriots fans. A shout came down from someone in the upper deck: “Sanchise? Ha! You got to be kidding me!” Such is the state of affairs for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, once affectionately known as the “Sanchise” due to his importance to the franchise. The honeymoon is over for the third-year quarterback as errors and mistakes continue to plague him and the 5-4 Jets. It isn’t easy for Sanchez — who unfairly carries more than his fair share of the burden — to assess his progress, or lack thereof, so far this season. “At this point we’re 5-4. So, that’s how I grade myself,” Sanchez said. “I think, if anything, everybody in this locker room, we’re all just a little frustrated, and a little upset at this last loss, because we thought we could’ve put ourselves in a good position, but I grade my-

Both running back LaDainian Tomlinson and wide receiver Jeremy Kerley didn’t practice yesterday and have been ruled out against the Broncos. Tomlinson sprained his left knee against the Patriots, while Kerley also injured his left knee. Wide receivers are the toddlers of the fantasy world. They can’t do anything for themselves and like to complain a lot.

The hierarchy at wideout is always changing. These three are suddenly very reliable WR2/3 bets:

talent can’t overcome this.

Trojan horse Before we write off Matt Leinart, let’s remember his credentials coming out of college. He’s got a big arm and he’s willing to use it. Considering Andre Johnson is perhaps the best allaround receiver in the league, he’ll sustain high-end WR2 value.

With Matt Cassel done for the year, the Chiefs are turning to Tyler Palko. Yikes. Palko is a former undrafted free agent, possesses a weak arm and has poor size. These are all major red flags for an offense that was already skewed toward the run. Sell

If Vince Young ends up starting in place of Michael Vick, look for lots of rollouts and short passes underneath. Give Brent Celek a boost, but don’t expect DeSean Jackson to finally break out. Young figures to play it conservative.
