Occupy, cops clash on ‘Day of Action’

MARK OVASKA/METRO

Skirmishes erupt during 12 hours of protests Police block OWS protesters from entering Wall Street A few violent clashes interrupted a day of mostly peaceful marches, as Occupy Wall Street took their message to different corners of the city Thursday. The occupiers’ “Day of Action” arrived two days after they were cleared from Zuccotti Park in a surprise 1 a.m. raid by police earlier this week. The worst clashes were in the morning near Wall Street, where OWS hoped to delay the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange. Because of an impenetrable police ring around Wall Street, however, the Stock Exchange opened as scheduled. Protesters were pushed back by officers at Wall Street, taking refuge in Zuccotti Park before continuing on to Union Square, as

well as Foley Square near City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge. The most violent policeprotester encounter happened after noon in Zuccotti Park, where protester Brendan Watts suffered a cut on his head after a fight reportedly broke out between demonstrators and the police. Although mostly peaceful, the protests were filled with tense moments, such as when irate demonstrators yelled “Shame!” at officers blocking them from Wall Street. The protest grew during the day, from a few hundred at Zuccotti Park to several thousand at night in Foley Square. ALISON BOWEN

Spokesman Paul Browne said some of the protesters were throwing an unknown substance, possibly vinegar, in police officers' faces. The worst injury occurred at Broadway and Liberty Street, where an officer received a laceration to his hand after a protester threw a star-shaped object at him, Browne said. The officer required 20 stitches to his left hand.

Lewis was arrested early Thursday morning after taking part in an Occupy Wall Street demonstration. Lewis, who retired from the Philadelphia Police Department in 2004, joined the Occupy Wall Street protesters on Tuesday, holding a sign that read "NYPD Don't Be Wall Street Mercenaries." Lewis came to fame

among followers of the Occupy movement after appearing on one of the Occupy Wall Street livestreams last night at 2 a.m. Lewis said the NYPD should have approached OWS with alternative tactics, perhaps through negotiation, rather than forcefully removing them. REBECCA SEIDMAN

Occupy Wall Street protester Nkrumah Tinsley, 29, remains in jail after he was arrested Tuesday. Police say Tinsley was taken in after he was quoted in Metro making threats to “burn this city down” during Thursday’s march. Tinsley gave an impassioned speech on Tuesday before the Day of Action, shouting to a crowd of fellow demonstrators. “On [Nov. 17], mark my words, we’re going to burn this city down,” said Tinsley, 29. “In a few days, you’re going to see what a Molotov cocktail can do to Macy’s.” Police said that after reading Metro and viewing a viral video of Tinsley’s rant, they began a citywide search for him. “The threat came to the NYPD’s attention in part because Metro NY immedi-

roristic threats. He is being held on a $75,000 bail and insists he didn’t mean what he said earlier this week. “He had no intention of throwing a molotov cocktail at Macy’s,” Tinsley’s lawyer Pierre Sussman told the New York Post. “This kind of speech is bluster. employees at the Duane Reade at 40 Wall Street reported that Occupy Wall Street protesters made it into the store on Thursday. They entered the store through its Pine Street entrance, said employees. The Duane Reade is located within the Trump Building on Wall Street, and it is unclear if protesters were trying to use the store to access offices inside or barricaded areas outside. The protesters were chased out by store employees and police who were called to the scene, said employees. METRO/CB

As occupiers marched up and down Broadway Thursday, many downtown residents and workers wondered what, exactly, the protests were about. “I think they should be able to express their voice, but the problem is they’re hurting the ordinary person, said Glyn Wyss, a gym trainer who canceled a session after seeing the crowd on Wall Street. Youth, non-whites more affected by sexually transmitted diseases Report says syphilis down though

The number of Americans newly infected with syphilis has fallen for the first time in a decade, but sexually transmitted diseases continue to take a staggering toll on the United States, with 19 million new infections each year at a cost of $17 billion annually. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s annual report on sexually transmitted diseases, which tracks cases of the three reportable STDs — chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis — shows widespread disparities. Drake makes sure to

Q&A

On this album, you do swing wildly between fun and philosophical. I think that’s just part of my character and my personality and my music. I always find a balance. There’s elements for everyone in there. It’s much like myself, as a person. It’s neutral and relatable to different groups of people. It’s not necessarily geared to one demographic. It’s more like the balance of, you get your ‘hood s—, you get your ignorant s—, you get sexy music, you get passionate moments, you get life moments and you get vulnerable moments. I think that’s what makes my music unique. I find a way to incorporate all those things into one song sometimes — or definitely into one project. METRO/PH

The Canadian rapper on trying to prevent an album from leaking Also on A-list guest stars and balancing philosophy with party rhymes

W

hen Canadian rapper Drake found out his latest album, “Take Care,” had leaked online a week before its release, he took to Twitter and in a very practical tone wrote to his 4 million followers, “Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it...and take care until next time.” This pragmatic response is telling of Drake’s approach. On “Take Care,” he frequently raps about what he observes with a sense of both realism and optimism. This is present most in songs like “We’ll Be Fine” and “HYFR,” where he says, “I learned working with the negatives could make for a better picture.”

Is it just a given that an album will leak before it comes out, or do you actually try to figure out where the leak came from?

Nah. You know, my last album leaked like 28 days before it came out and that was kind of devastating. I don’t necessarily

know how it happened but I feel that if leaks are somewhat contained — like if your album leaks six or seven days before it’s supposed to come out — I never see it as detrimental or that damaging. These songs have many philosophical lines, like “jealousy is just love and hate combined.” Are these the type of things that you stow away for a while, just waiting to find a place where they’ll fit?

Yeah, there are little pieces that I collect over the months, whether it be in passing conversation or from reading or movies. I pull from all kinds of referhis signature harmonica. I think that the record, the way it was, was done already when he was listening to it. Vocally, we had tracked it out, and me and him have these other plans for a record where we sing together.

ences but I make them my own. I try to never directly take a quote verbatim. I try to make it apply to my life or make it work for me. A lot of it is just stuff we think about and talk about amongst each other — like me, 40 [Drake’s collaborator Noah “40” Shebib] and whoever else is in the studio. It just comes from hours of thinking and reflecting on life. I think one of my biggest things is to be quoted. I grew up reading quotes, studying what intelligent people had to say, what wise people had to say, so I think one of my biggest goals in life is just to be a quoted individual, and to be somebody whose words matter. So you would like to see engraved in stone a line like, “You’re a fine motherf— er, back that ass up.”

[Laughs] Well, I mean, I don’t know if that’s going to be quoted. But there’s obviously moments of messing around, and then you have your profound moments. PAT HEALY

‘Let’s All Go to the Bar’

Quick Q&A

‘Divine’ intervention In the past year, Deer Tick members have scattered to Brooklyn and Philadelphia, with McCauley moving to Nashville.

With ‘Divine Providence,’ Deer Tick have made an album that is not just a fun time, but is like a night at the pub telling stories with friends Deer Tick calls their new album “Divine Providence,” which at first seems like a sweet homage to the group's beginnings in Rhode Island’s capital city. But as with most things related to this band, the truth is uglier, ruder and much

more rock ’n’ roll. “It actually came from a black metal song that we wrote,” says singer John McCauley. “It had extremely anti-Christian lyrics, so we thought it’d be funny if we named that song ‘Divine Providence.’” They eventually scrapped the song, as it didn’t fit the mood of their new album — which is mostly a rollicking good time, catering to classic rock fist-pumps as much as country rock swaying. Filled with titles like “Let’s All Go to the Bar,” and lyrics like “Johnny’s

What made you decide to go to Nashville?

ings too. But Deer Tick is no throwback act. They are writing very much for these times. The song “Main Street,” which they recently performed on Letterman, seems perfect for the age of 24/7 social networking, as McCauley asserts in a desperate rasp: “Miss one day and the whole world casts you out.”

“Divine Providence” also has a sonic density that betrays its festive atmosphere. So in the studio, are Deer Tick focused or a mess? “I’d say it’s a little bit of both,” says McCauley. “Or maybe one person would be really drunk and nobody else would. It all depended on what time of day you got to the studio.”

I was there since February and I had gone there to be with a girl. Then we ended up breaking up, but I really liked it and I have access to a studio there that I can use whenever I want. And it’s cheap and easy. It’s not as cheap and easy as Providence, is it?

I’d say cheaper and easier. Will the next album be “Divine Nashville”?

Yeah, sure. PAT HEALY

Epic family entertainment “Happy Feet Two” Director: George Miller Cast: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Sofia Vergara Rating: PG Grade:

The original “Happy Feet” and its sequel don’t look or feel like other movies for kids. Director George “Mad Max” Miller is a maximalist director who opens up the usual kidflick palette with swooping cameras, wide-open

vistas and beautifully effective 3-D. Featuring a cast of thousands — animated penguins as far as the eye can see and “krillions” of krill — “Happy Feet Two” is made on a scale that would make Cecil B. DeMille proud. It’s also a step above most kids movies. Joyful and beautiful to look at, it has more to say about life, love and the pursuit of happiness than most movies aimed at adults. RICHARD CROUSE

Don’t mess with these two: Playing father and daughter, George Clooney and Shailene Woodley are on a serious fact-finding mission.

The director of “Sideways” and “Election” is not one for the predictable story arc. While his films don’t exactly wander, there’s never any clue as to where the story is going. Some people love that. But the lifelike nature of that approach can take all the fun out of watching it. Payne relies on the richness of the story to keep your interest. That

“I’m not making a record. ... I record stuff all the time but have no intention to release it. People hate actors who release music so much that the majority of people would hate it just because it exists. It’s too personal for me to dirty it with people’s judgement.” PATTINSON, DENYING RUMORS THAT HE IS GOING TO RELEASE A RECORD

We met ‘Twilight’ stars Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene and will never wash our tape recorder again Here’s four facts we learned 1) PATTINSON LOVES JUNK FOOD In “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1,” the fourth in the series, newlyweds Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) finally go all the way. In preparation for the stripped-down honeymoon scene, Pattinson, 25, put in four

“I very rarely exercise and really don’t like going to the gym.” PATTINSON

months of solid workouts. “Because I very rarely exercise and really don’t like going to the gym, I had to make it extreme,” he says. “I had to cut out beer and cut out junk food, which is basically my entire life, and I had to replace that with going to the gym and working out, basically all day, every day. I went to the gym pretty much at four in the morning and worked out for two hours and then went to work and then ran. It was absolutely exhausting.”

2) GREENE GETS DRAMATIC His co-star Ashley Greene, 24, who plays Edward’s sister Alice, also shows a new side in the movie, albeit a more emotional one. As the Cullens’ especially talented psychic, Alice is haunted by frightening premonitions. “You will see Alice being emotionally tortured and a little

tormented inside. She wants to protect and support Bella and the two emotions are in conflict. That was one of the great things of having a saga that gives you [time] to develop your character,” she says. EMMA BJORKMAN METRO WORLD NEWS

3) THE BIRTHING SCENE WAS HORRIFIC In this installment — spoiler alert! — Bella becomes pregnant and the baby is half vampire. According to Pattinson and Greene, the birth scene was one of the most memorable during the movie shoot. “The director Bill Condon made some really bloody horror movies early on in his career and we shot it like a straight horror scene,” says Pattinson. “I saw one cut, and if you had added some other music and other sound effects

you wouldn’t want to watch the screen. They could definitely do a version of this movie for adults only.” Greene remembers the day as one of the most hysterical. “We were nervous and didn’t know how to pull this off. It was so intense. You can’t relate to a baby that is destroying its mother. It translates much better on film and it looks good, but when we were filming it nobody knew what was happening!”

Much like other book adaptations like, say, the “Harry Potter” or “The Lord of the Rings” franchises, it’s not the second or third installment that gets you hooked. The first is the clincher. And so it’s fitting that “Breaking Dawn - Part 1” is fully loaded with as many cheap special effects and unintentionally hilarious melodramatic moments as the very first READ THE FULL REVIEW: WWW.METRO.US/MOVIES

Lowlights So-awful-it’s-amazing moments in “Breaking Dawn - Part 1”: The CGI wolfpack mind-argue over Bella’s weird baby. Edward’s heartfelt, near-tears description of the night he first has sex with Bella being “the best night of my existence.” A violent, bloody birth scene, the end of which results in one lone streak of blood across a hospital johnny.

film and the other two that followed it. It’s like director Bill Condon wants to guarantee us crappy quality, just to keep it consistent. And for that, the fans will be grateful. There’s a whole spectrum of Twihards — from those who relish the camp factor to others who are sincerely dying for that headboardbreaking scene. There’s no reason to believe they won’t all embrace this one for its awe-inspiring badness. Same stuff, different multimillion dollar-earning movie. HEIDI PATALANO

Ooh la la! “Twilight!” Sexiest Man Alive! Was this a week for smut or what? And readers let me hear it, from my secret Twihard followers to those who were antiBrad for Sexiest Man Alive (that’s Cooper, not Pitt we’re talking about). Oh, and @Sn3ak3r_Fr3ak3r wants The Word to move on from Joan Rivers’ tweets (I tend to agree!). @nycpiscesgirl I’d rather wait until after all the twihards have seen it. Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip

Talking points

Cavallari takes on Kardashians Oh, snap! I’ve never been a super fan of Kristin Cavallari as, really, I’m not too sure what there is to be impressed by. But I might have a change of heart as she totally called out the Kardashians on “The Billy Bush Show” on Wednesday. Here’s the backstory: Life & Style is running a story that Scott Disick, the boyfriend and baby daddy of Kourtney Kardashian, fooled around with Cavallari before hooking up with Kourtney. Kristin says this is “100 percent not true” and accused the Kardashians for making news where there is none. (The Kardashians flaming gossip rumors? Never!) “What convenient timing for them. With their show premiering next week and with everything that’s going on for Kim, I feel like they’re trying to take the heat off her,” she told Bush. “When there’s a big story like that, they always call you and ask if you want to comment and clearly none of them denied it, so it’s very — it’s really disrespectful to me. ... I’m in a committed relationship. It’s disrespectful to me and Jay [Cutler] and I think it just says a lot about their character.” Um, everything that has happened in the past year with the Kardhasians says a lot about their character, Cavallari tells don’t you it like it is. think?

It’s official: Moore and Kutcher are divorcing

T

he weeks and weeks of “are they or aren’t they” gossip are over: Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are getting a divorce. “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my sixyear marriage to Ashton,” Moore said in statement released by her publicist today. “As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and

Martha Stewart doesn’t freak out about Christmas

While the rest of world plans on upping their Xanax intake to handle the stress of the holidays, Martha Stewart doesn’t even break a sweat. But, really though, was there ever any doubt? While working the red carpet on Wednesday night at the Fourth Annual Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Gala, which honored music impresario Clive Davis, the domestic diva was all smiles and totally at ease while discussing her plans for the holidays. She said the thing

vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family,

and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.” This comes after reports that Moore, 49, and Kutcher, 33, escaped to the Caribbean, hiding out at Bruce Willis’ Turks and

Well, she makes them herself. (Again: Of course she does. She is Martha Stewart; she doesn’t do Wal-Mart.) “I like making things. I like giving things that I’ve made. I actually

love receiving handmade gifts.” But reporters on the red carpet did catch Stewart with her guard down just once, when they asked her what she’s giving Jude for Christmas. “I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it yet,” she said. “She has everything already.” — With additional reporting by Meredith Engel

Caicos home after the uproar over Kutcher’s Twitter gaffe, in which he stood up for Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, according to Us Weekly. “They had to get away. Ashton’s tweeting [about Penn State] was the last straw,” a source says. Of course, the retreat also gave the couple a chance to address their marital difficulties stemming from Kutcher’s infidelity. “Things have been very strained,” the source adds, “[but] they’re trying to figure things out.” And figure it out they did. How sad.

But first she needs to do some cleanup work. TMZ has published text messages Yeater sent to a friend suggesting her baby’s father is someone other than Bieber. “pleeeease ERASE ALL MESSAGES from my mom where she says Tristyn is Robbies Son,” one message reads, while a second says: “Ill kick u when we get paid im trusting you pleeeease.” Her “friends” are fiscally savvy; they realized TMZ would pay for text messages before Yeater could.

Sorry, Occupy. This week belonged to ‘Twilight’ While some people in tents were being kicked out of them, others were setting them up — and these vampire lovers were allowed to stay put. Until the reason they were all there — “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1” — actually opened, that is. Here is the vamp-crazed madness that happened this week surrounding every Twihard’s most anticipated film of the year.

1. While Occupy camps across the country were being torn down, a new camp was set up on Sunday in Los Angeles — this time by Twilight fans who waited in line for the premiere. 2. At the U.K. premiere on Wednesday, fans were all smiles as they tried to take a photo with star Robert Pattinson. 3. On Sunday, this “Team Edward” fan was seen at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif., waiting to get in line for the premiere of the movie, which happened Friday. 4. The ultimate “Team Edward” fan arrived at the Los Angeles premiere in a wedding dress, all ready to marry the love of her life — Robert Pattinson. Well, make that

his cut-out. 5. At the same event, Edward Cullen fanatics displayed a “Great Wall of Rob.” 6. Hordes of fans at the U.K. premiere in London on Wednesday were also delighted as they snapped photos with Taylor Lautner.

The original Thanksgiving meal When you carve the bird, be sure to thank the Native Americans Our nation’s first people knew good eats This year, let’s give it up for the originators of our favorite meal of the year: the Native Americans. “Most all of the foods that we associate with Thanksgiving are Native American foods,” says Beverly Cox, the co-author of the recently reissued “Spirit of the Harvest: North American Indian Cooking.” “Sweet potatoes, corn (like cornbread stuffing), the turkey (a native animal to the Americas), cranberries, green beans, pumpkin pie — pumpkins originated in the Americas as well — virtually our whole dinner came from the Indians.” And while we celebrate Thanksgiving just once a year, in earlier times, giving thanks was a regular occurrence.

“Some 70 percent of the foods eaten in the world today originated in the Americas. Anyone who’s interested in food is interested in American Indian food.” COX The photos in picture are from previous editions of Photo Challenge.

“Thanksgiving ceremonies, for most Native American tribes, were very much a part of their lives,” she continues. “There were Thanksgiving ceremonies periodically throughout the year to punctuate the different harvests. There would be a Thanksgiving ceremony for the first buffalo, or the first salmon that were caught — they’d treat it with a great ceremony to thank the salmon for giving themselves to feed the people.” So before you stuff your face this year, we recommend giving thanks to the Native Americans for helping your mom come up with that awesome pie. Weekend recipe

Hidatsa stuffed sugar pumpkin Serves 6 Many of the Plains tribes originated near the Great Lakes and in the northern woodlands, and thus were familiar with wild rice. It became an important trade item, finding its way from Woodland to Prairie tribes. It was then traded for buffalo hides and dried meat from the hunting peoples on the plains, who were long removed from their ancestral rice marshes. The Mandan and Hidatsa villages along the Missouri River in what is now central North Dakota were major trading centers for both indigenous

and non-Indian foods. These tribes raised pumpkins and squash and also traded with tribes to the east and the north, and thus had a more varied diet than their nomadic neighbors.

Ingredients 1

4- to 5-pound sugar pumpkin 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon dry mustard 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil or rendered fat 1 pound ground venison, buffalo or beef 1 medium onion, chopped 1 cup wild rice, cooked

3 1 ¼

eggs, beaten teaspoon crushed dried sage teaspoon pepper

Directions

1

Preheat oven to 350F. Cut the top from the pumpkin and remove seeds and strings. Prick cavity with a fork and rub with 1 teaspoon of salt and the mustard. Heat oil in a large skillet. Add meat and onion and saute over medium-high heat until browned. Off the heat, stir in wild rice, eggs, remaining salt, sage and pepper. Stuff pumpkin with this mixture. Place ½ inch of water in the bottom of a shallow baking pan.

2

Put pumpkin in the pan and bake for 1 ½ hours, or until tender. Add more water to the pan as necessary to avoid sticking. Cut pumpkin into wedges, giving each person both pumpkin and stuffing.

Woody Allen has famously never let a film be made about him. How did you do it?

His reluctance to this kind of thing over the years has not been based so much on his fear that somebody would do something outside of his control. Inside the mind of Woody Allen At 76, director Woody Allen is still reaching new heights in his 42 years as a filmmaker. With a staggering 47 films under his belt, Allen could easily be installed in the Mt. Rushmore of American filmmakers alongside Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone. But until now, Allen has never allowed a documentary to be made about his work. The man who finally convinced him was Robert Weide. Now his thing is, “Well, no one’s going to watch it.” His romantic relationships with Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow are epic in the public consciousness. Q&A Because his films are so personal, Woody Allen fans may feel they know him. What will this documentary reveal that we didn’t know? This guy has a work ethic like nobody else I’ve seen. By the time one film comes out, he’s already shooting the next film. I tried to round out the picture as much as I can. Four musicians, including composer Hahn Rowe, cluster upstage, twittering and droning, occasionally erupting into crescendos of sound. Six tall performers gambol on the floor, often in pairs moving in unison, circulating around triangular blaze-orange flags.

Dancer James McGinn wears a flag on a tall pole attached to his body, creating a marvelous effect as he runs and bounces. Then a large white box, the size of a ’50s television, rolls into the space, stolidly crossing the floor and tipping its way over the lip at the back. But as the Occupy movement hits its second month, many still view protesters in negative terms, using words like “lazy,” “ignorant” and “smelly.” As the Daily News reports: “Polling shows the public supports the message of the Occupy Wall Street movement even if people have reservations about the encampments themselves.” What gives? Niners face first ‘chalk’ test The 49ers have an 8-1 record. Big deal. At least one or two teams get off to a start like that every year. The real feat Jim Harbaugh's team has accomplished is racing out to a 80-1 record against the spread. This is the longest un-

beaten ATS streak to start a season since 1980, according to Covers.com. That’s because the Niners don’t play the style that inflates lines. They are a run-heavy, defensive-oriented team. That’s not the style people bet on. So lines stay low and the Niners cover.

However, the public bettors might be coming around. San Fran is favored by 10 at home against the Cardinals on Sunday, the most chalk they’ve had to eat all year. Still, around 60 percent of public bettors are backing the Niners. ADAM LEVITAN

Giants avoid talk in rivalry game The Giants-Eagles rivalry is as intriguing and bitter as any in the NFL, but you won’t hear any of the Giants fanning the flames. Despite being perilously close to having its dream season dashed at the hands of the Giants (6-3), who no doubt are itching to turn the tables on their hated rivals south on Interstate 95, the Eagles (3-6) won’t be able to use any bulletin board material to fuel them. The last time they met at MetLife Stadium, Dec. 19, 2010, it was the Eagles who ultimately knocked the Giants out of the playoffs following DeSean Jackson’s walkoff punt return for a touchdown. So, now it’s the Giants’ turn to hopefully do the same. Just don’t expect anyone on Big Blue to publicly enjoy the chance to theoretically end Philadelphia’s playoff chances. “We can’t look at it like that,” said wideout Hakeem Nicks when asked if he’s enjoying the fact that this could be the Eagles’ death knell. “We have to look at it like this is a hungry team coming out here. It’s a rivalry game. We know they’re going to come out there ready to play and take everything away from us as well.”

The cold, hard

Flutie strikes! Buffalo Bills coach Wade Phillips benched QB Doug Flutie before the 1999 playoffs, despite the fact he had gone 10-5. The Flutie-less Bills then lost to Tennessee thanks to the controversial “Music City Miracle.” The Bills have never returned to the playoffs. And any team that has employed Phillips since then has suffered incredible misfortune. The Houston Texans, where Phillips is the defensive coordinator, is the latest victim of the Curse of Flutie. Houston was enjoying the greatest season in its history: a franchise-best 7-3 record, on pace for its first playoff appearance and the AFC’s No. 1 seed, and the top scoring differential in the AFC (+107), a reliable indicator of Super Bowl potential. But on Monday we learned that the team had lost Pro Bowl-caliber QB Matt Schaub for the season. Some call it coincidence. We call it another triumph for the dreaded Curse of Flutie.

FFchamps.com’s ‘Start and Sit’

Hakeem Nicks, who scored a touchdown last week, called the Eagles “a hungry team.”

Head coach Tom Coughlin took it a step further in playing nice over the airwaves by actually stating that the Eagles are a better team than the one they faced back in September. “I just think they are better. If you just look at last week’s game, they had every opportunity and they

were in position to win,” said Coughlin. “They have their issues with the turnovers, [but] they have scored on defense two weeks in a row. They scored more than one touchdown [and] scored a touchdown and a field goal off two interceptions. I just think they are improved since the

first time we saw them.” Coughlin said both teams may be 180 degrees in opposite directions of fourth-quarter excellence, but it’s the Eagles’ middle quarters that alarm him. TONY WILLIAMS sports@metro.us

Start him SEA RB Marshawn Lynch He averages 122 yards per game over last two weeks; St. Louis defense allows NFL-worst 150 yards per game and is No. 29 with 5.1 yards per rush attempt. Locked in: As has been the theme for much of the season when the Jets’ offense has stumbled, it was Sanchez being his own worst enemy. Midway through the third quarter and up 10-3. Sanchez locked in on his first read and cornerback Andre Goodman stepped forward for the pick six to even the score.

Better from Sanchez: A mere 96 hours removed from completing just 51 percent of his passes and throwing two touchdowns against the Pats, Mark Sanchez was effective against Denver, even with no ground game to supplement the passing attack. Although the final drive came up short, it was a positive night for Sanchez. METRO/KD

The Broncos had just 85 total yards in the first half (50 passing, 35 rushing), but the score was still tied 3-3 at halftime.

Three bad ...

1

Limiting Tebow: It seemed like a harbinger of things to come when Denver pieced together two emphatic opening drives that looked likely to set the tone for the game. But after that, the Jets limited Denver to just 11 yards of total offense the rest of the half. From the break: Sanchez orchestrated an eight-play drive that featured six throws and resulted in Matt Slauson recovering a Bilal Powell fumble for a one-yard touchdown and a 10-3 lead coming out of halftime. It was a rare moment where the Jets’ timing on offense and Sanchez’s protection all came together.

It took 95 yards, five minutes and an unstoppable Tim Tebow to quite possibly put an end to the Jets’ playoff dreams. You could charitably call it a defensive struggle, but either way the Broncos beat the Jets, 17-13, last night. The centerpiece coming into the game was Broncos

from a safety when Jim Leonhard missed tackling Eddie Royal in the end zone on a wide receiver screen. He broke free and got some breathing room. From there, Tebow rushed for 57 yards, including the 20-yard go-ahead touchdown on third and four from the 20. The Jets’ only score of the

night came when Bilal Powell fumbled trying to go into the end zone and guard Matt Slausson fell on it for a score. Sanchez had a chance to drive the Jets down for the winning score, but with 58 seconds remaining he couldn’t play the hero. MARK OSBORNE

Not a great Knight: Two weeks ago, Joe McKnight was named the October AFC Special Teams Player of the Month. Since then, he muffed a punt last week against New England and then fumbled a third quarter kickoff return against Denver last night. It killed a great scoring chance.

3

With all the cards down: When it mattered most, the Jets allowed Tebow to make plays. Marching down the field, Tebow pulled the strings on a 95 yard drive inside the games final six minutes, leaving the Jets just 58 seconds on the clock to try and orchestrate a comeback. It was a heaven sent moment for the Broncos. METRO/KD

Valentine may be returning Mets fans may finally be getting their wish. Bobby Valentine could be coming back to manage in the majors. Problem is, it’s not for the Mets.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly shown interest in the former Mets manager. Valentine, who currently works for ESPN as a studio analyst, will reportedly interview for the position left vacant by Terry Francona sometime this week. The Sox had granted only one second interview in their search

and that was with Dale Sveum, who was hired by the Cubs yesterday. With Boston reopening their search, Valentine appears to be near the top of the list. Valentine, 61, managed the Mets for seven years and made the World Series in 2000 before, being fired after the 2002 season. METRO

Mohamed Sanu leads the Rutgers passing attack.

Key game as Rutgers hosts Cincy Knights with a ‘Big’ opportunity Looking for revenge from 2010 The Scarlet Knights have been here before. In 2006, Rutgers had the chance to win the Big East conference outright in their final game of the regular season in Morgantown, W.Va. Instead, the Scarlet Knights lost a triple-overtime thriller rather than booking their ticket to a BCS bowl. The Scarlet Knights were sent to Houston for the Texas Bowl. Now as they ready themselves for Saturday, Rutgers can take a step forward in capturing their first-ever conference title with a win over Cincinnati. Cincinnati is currently atop the Big East with a 3-1 record but a win over the Bearcats would give Rutgers, currently 3-2, the tiebreaker advantage if things came down to a head-to-head tie. While things would still need to break Rutgers’ way, a victory over Cincinnati would be tremendous for the program. “This is the most bal-

Some people, traditionalists, like a team that runs away and hides,” head coach Greg Schiano said. “You’re not going to get that in the Big East conference. For the fans who follow Big East football, you never know. It’s like the NFL; every week is an adventure.” The Scarlet Knights were badly beaten, 69-38, at Nippert Stadium last year. While this is a different Rutgers team, including the nation’s 11th best scoring defense, there are still painful lessons from last year’s display. “We didn't execute,” Schiano said. “I think emotionally I don't know where we were.” KRISTIAN DYER sports@metro.us
