Pipe bomber caught, terror averted: NYPD Officials say Washington Heights man plotted to bomb cop cars Also targeted post offices and military members Was preparing to test bomb A Manhattan man spent years plotting to detonate nail-studded bombs in the city, but was nabbed before he could carry out a vicious attack, officials said last night. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, announced last night that Jose Pimentel was arrested on terrorism charges Saturday afternoon. Bloomberg described Pimentel, 27, as a Dominican Republic native who is now a U.S. citizen and a convert to Islam.

“The suspect was a socalled ‘lone wolf,’ motivated by his own resentment of the presence of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as inspired by al Qaeda propaganda,” Bloomberg said. His targets were police cars, post offices, military members returning to the States and a Bayonne, N.J., police station, Bloomberg said. Officers were investigating him since 2009, Kelly said. Metro’s Man and Woman of the Year:

Take your pick For the past two years, Metro has asked its readers to nominate the man and woman who affected news headlines to the greatest extent over the year. Today, we launch our 2011 Man and Woman of the Year event — but as we do so, we acknowledge that the winners this year may be a group of people rather than individuals. How can we ignore the

claims of the Occupy Wall Street movement, whose activities have dominated the news headlines for the last two months? Others may feel it right to nominate the 1 percent. We feel certain that many readers will wish to nominate Navy SEAL Team 6, the group of warriors who killed Osama bin Laden. As we look back over

2011, we remember the people of Egypt, the activists of the Arab Spring and those who fought for regime change in Libya. Naturally, some readers will wish to nominate individuals. President Barack Obama ordered the bin Laden mission; and on the basis that he was hardly out of the headlines all year until his death last month, who can ignore the

nomination of Muammar Gaddafi? When the U.S. federal government faced a shutdown in April, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner was in the thick of the conflict. Also in April, Prince William and Kate Middleton had the world enthralled with their fairy tale wedding at Westminster Abbey. METRO PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

In the Metro edition of Monday, Dec. 12, we will publish a shortlist of those receiving the most nominations, and will invite readers to vote for their favorites. Nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9. Readers will be able to vote on a shortlist of nominees from Monday, Dec. 12 to Thursday, Dec. 22.

Live, love, play: Making magic Metro is collaborating with nonprofits to give out toys for the holidays You can donate gifts to needy children in the city One charity helps in ways from DJing parties to providing books to children in hospitals

Live Love Dance’s founder DJed a Halloween party for children earlier this year.

As Metro’s office slowly fills with toys as part of the Metro Magic holiday toy drive, Metro will be partnering with several nonprofits in the city to distribute the toys to needy New York City children. One of the groups we're working with is Live Love Dance, which was started this year by Jonathan Lopez, a local DJ. Lopez told Metro that while traveling as a DJ, he was touched by the underprivileged children he met. Live Love Dance is a one-man show entirely run by Lopez. Although he receives some help from family and friends, he is in charge of most of the responsibilities. Live Love Dance helps children in a variety of ways. It’s partnered with Metro to collect toys for

In the past, Lopez has worked with children in hospitals, providing them gifts, books and toys, and this Halloween, he DJed a free dance party for kids in New Jersey. To raise money, Lopez sells T-shirts he designed on Livelovedance.org. He is also planning a fundraising holiday dinner next month. “I personally think kids are often the ones that don’t have a voice and don’t have a say in things,” Lopez said. “I want to be their voice to ask for help on their behalf.” MARY ANN GEORGANTOPOULOS

Toys purchased by our readers are stacking up.

The Maasai are Kenya’s most-known tribe, regarded as a mythical warrior people in the African bush But reality is far from romantic Some 4,000 live in squalor in a slum on the fringes of Nairobi’s international airport Metro visits the world of the ‘Slumdog Maasai’

‘T

his is the plane from Switzerland. Always on time,” says 55-year-old Pasei, as he gazes at the sky beside his favorite wife Kiserian. He wears a bright red “shuka” and a fake gold watch. Pasei’s community lives on a tiny and dry piece of land near the road to Mombasa, in the middle of a polluted factory zone between Jomo Kenyatta airport and Nairobi National Park. “Two years ago, a terrible drought drove us out of the provinces,” Pasei gloomily recalls. “It killed our cattle, so we had to move to the city for food and water.” He fled his native Samburu province in northern Kenya, a region ravaged by drought, hunger and disease. All of Pasei’s eight wives have their heads shaved, with beautiful rings and ornaments on their stretched earlobes. They

touch each other on the forehead with their hand — their way of saying “hi.” But it’s Kiserian who built Pasei’s “manyatta,” a small circular house made with cattle dung, mud, ash and human urine, all of it known to be waterproof. Inside is total darkness. The couple sleeps in separate beds. Pasei’s 18 children and other wives live in surrounding huts, made with corrugated sheet metal. They have a few goats

and sheep to tend to. “We sell their milk for 40 shillings ($0.43) a litre for the factory workers nearby, and we eat their meat on special occasions,” Pasei informs us. For a living, men work as security guards in supermarkets. Women handcraft necklaces for the National Park’s souvenir shops or the Maasai market in Nairobi. “But we have to compete with the Chinese,” Pasei says. Rival Chinese workers export Maasai merchandise from the factories of Guangdong. In this Maasai slum, money is scarce; children don’t have toys and rarely go to the local fee-paying schools. “We can only pay for a week of school from time to time,” Pasei says. In this male-dominated community, girls are not allowed to use public toilets provided to them by the factory nearby. Kids suffer from chronic diarrhea and pneumonia.

So what are Nairobi officials doing for them? They have yet to deal with a much bigger issue: Kibera, a slum of one million people — one of Africa’s biggest — in the south of the city.

T

hen, the Maasai’s last hope to escape misery might come from one Christian pastor, in return for some little effort. “I want them first to give up circumcision, a painful ceremony for boys,” says Reverend Ondarir, who lives in a little hut nearby. “Although illegal, female circumcision is still far much ingrained. Women fear they won’t be able to get married without it.” Meanwhile, the Kenyan government would like them to stop hunting for lions in the neighboring National Park, much loved by tourists. “But how can a Maasai still call himself a warrior if he cannot kill a lion?” Pasei asks.

Reverend Ondarir has lots of projects for them but no money yet. “We need a generator to produce electricity at night so as to make the area safer,” he says. These 4,000 Maasai live in an unsafe, neglected area even local taxi drivers never dare go. As a result, the Maasai’s famous swords are used to catch lions and to keep thugs away. After Metro says goodbye to our new Maasai friends, five men carrying stones block our way out. “It’s our land too, you cannot just come, say hello and go … unless you give us your money.” Pasei and his folks suddenly rushed and yelled at them, successfully showing off their stick-fighting ability. Even in Nairobi slums, the Maasai warriors are still feared. JORDAN POUILLE letters@metro.us

Such people know about so-called “modern civilization” and comfort, but envy nothing and no one. Most of them were removed from their territories in Kenya and Tanzania in the 1990s and gathered inside touristic national parks and reserves, with the complicity of some corrupt Maasai leaders. The capture of Saif al-Islam is the latest dramatic chapter in the series of revolts that have swept the Arab world. The first uprising toppled the Ben Ali government in Tunisia early this year. The upheaval spread to Egypt, forcing out longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak in February, and then swept Libya, where the capital Tripoli fell to rebels this summer and Muammar Gaddafi died after being beaten and abused by captors last month. The announcement of failure would come today, aides from the Republican and Democratic camps told Reuters yesterday, shortly after several lawmakers on the bipartisan 12-member “super committee” cast strong doubts about a deal on the Sunday talk shows. On NBC's "Meet the Press" program, neither Republican Senator Jon Kyl nor Democratic Senator John Kerry gave any indication a deal was near.

Twenty-four percent of registered Republican voters would support the former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives if the contest were held now, an increase of eight percentage points from roughly a week ago, according to the poll, which was conducted on Nov. 18-19. Despite allegations of questionable business ties, Gingrich is the latest favorite of conservative Republicans eager for an alternative to Romney, whom they see as too moderate. In a sign of further relief for Gingrich, 46 percent of Republicans said the revelations that he had received up to $1.8 million in consulting fees from mortgage giant Freddie Mac had no impact on their view of the candidate. Thirty-one percent said the issue left them with a less favorable opinion of Gingrich, who has criticized Freddie Mac sharply in the past. REUTERS

Police pepper spray probed at UC Davis

CAIRO. Emboldened by their success in toppling Hosni Mubarak nine months ago, experienced protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square encouraged each other on Sunday to hold their ground as the police fired canister after canister of tear gas. “Don’t run, that just provokes them to fire more,” shouted one protester to others fleeing a hail of metal cans. Is Demi Moore into women? Ashton Kutcher’s alleged infidelity may have been the last straw in his marriage to Demi Moore, but sources tell Star magazine that the pair’s “open marriage” had been a strain for years. “Everyone in Hollywood knows about their arrangement, but they’ve managed to keep it a secret from the general public,” a source says. “Demi is attracted to women just as much as men, so she didn’t always get all she needed from Ashton. Oh, ‘Godspell’

First Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz’s ’70s hit musical opened Nov. 7 This one’s been modernized to entertain today’s masses, but still oversimplified It’s a premise you might know: A benevolent shepherd teaches open-hearted pupils how to be better people in the name of salvation. Stephen Schwartz’s hits (“Day by Day,” “Turn Back, O Man”) might also sound familiar from the original musical off-Broadway in 1971 (it closed on Broadway in 1977), or the subsequent movie in 1973. This family musical might not exactly go part and parcel with a happy ending, but at least you can put off thinking about that until after the first act. And parents won’t have to worry about children getting clobbered over the head

with religion, as the story is told through approachable parables padded in high-energy humor and pop culture references. Hunter Parrish (“Spring Awakening,” “Weeds”) plays a handsome, happy Jesus whose grinning innocence sometimes belies the intelligence that such a powerful leader of men would likely possess. Nine ensemble actors answer to

their real names and showcase individual strengths onstage; each steals the spotlight in turn during his or her featured solo. There’s a pure, contagious energy not only onstage but on all sides of the theaterin-the-round — the highlight of which is wooden floorboards that open to reveal splashy pools of water or even trampolines. “Godspell” will always be hampered by the setback of being, well, “Godspell.” It lacks a cohesive plot and is often best received when it’s used as a canvas for a theme or ideology, aside from the obvious. But it’s hard to fault

Daniel Goldstein’s production for that omission, considering it leaves room for us to appreciate the cast and its enviable intimacy (we want to get onstage and join the disciples, and are actually welcomed to during intermission). The show’s biggest detriment is the sudden shift to sobriety in the second act. We haven’t been able to know Jesus as more than a mouthpiece before his downfall, so the sudden bid for our emotional involvement is what one might call a Hail Mary.

Hunter Parrish stars as Jesus in the Broadway revival of “Godspell.”

‘Breaking Dawn’ draws $283.5 million worldwide The new “Twilight” vampire movie opened with a massive $283.5 million in worldwide ticket sales over the weekend as passionate fans filled theaters for the beginning of a two-part finale for the hugely popular supernatural love story. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1” captured an estimated $139.5 million in the United States and Canada, distributor Summit Entertainment said yesterday. That ranked as the fifth biggest domestic opening of all time. The movie’s performance beat studio forecasts for the film, which shows young lovestruck human Bella wedding vampire Edward and becoming pregnant. Summit had predicted as much as $125 million domestically.

Always nice to see two (married) teenagers in love.

Internationally, “Breaking Dawn” added $144 million in 54 countries over the weekend. The movie cost about $110 million to make. Taylor Lautner on his toughest scene

ANDREW COOPER

In ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1,’ the walking ab has to ‘imprint’ ‘Because what is imprinting? What do you look like when you imprint? I mean, those were all the questions going through my head’

For the fourth installment of the “Twilight” franchise, Taylor Lautner knew he was going to be in for some pretty bizarre stuff — even for a franchise about vampires, werewolves and moody teens. His character, the werewolf Jacob, finds himself in the awkward position of “imprinting” on Renesmee, the newborn daughter of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson). “That was ... tough,” Lautner admits. “Because what is imprinting? What do you look like when you imprint? I mean, those were all the questions going through my head.” For the uninitiated, imprinting is what happens when a werewolf finds his soulmate, at least in author Stephenie Meyer’s world.

Those pesky Gus Van Sant rumors Earlier this month, it was reported that Lautner would be starring in a movie directed by “Milk” filmmaker Gus Van Sant. Lautner, however, is tight-lipped about the rumored project, which is said to be based on a New Yorker article. “It’s very premature, so I really don’t have much to say now other than the fact that I really, really respect and would love the opportunity to work with him.”

“Luckily we had Stephenie on set the entire time, and trust me, I asked her a million times, ‘OK, explain to me one more time what imprinting is exactly?’ and ‘What is he doing when he’s imprinting?’ It was very, very confusing,” Lautner says. The business with the baby was something he’d been anticipating, of course, and he admits that while he gets the overall romance of the story, it does seem like an odd consolation prize. “I get a baby? Yeah, yeah. I have gotten over that by now,” he says. “I remember the first time reading the book, I was so confused. I was like, ‘Wait. He’s trying to get Bella the whole time, and he strikes out so he goes with her child?’ It really took a second.”

With filming on the franchise complete, Lautner is happy to put some aspects of “Twilight” behind him. Such as “not wearing clothes,” he says with a laugh. “I mean, I love Vancouver, but we have to film when it’s cold and rainy and gross, and the sun comes out and we’ve got to stop filming.” Joking aside, though, Lautner is nothing but grateful. “I honestly can’t even think of complaints or anything that I wouldn’t want to do because of everything it’s given me,” he says. “I’m just crazy thankful for what this has given all of us and the opportunities it’s given us as actors.” NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

You can feast on your favorite Thanksgiving foods without finishing out the meal feeling heavy, bloated and blah. Here’s how:

Lighten up the classics. Sometimes you have to have the real thing (there’s no messing with mom’s stuffing). When it comes to less hallowed “supporting dishes,” browse the Web for slimmed-down versions that make smart substitutions to trim excess calories and fat. For a healthy alternative to sugary sweet potato casserole, visit www.metro.us for my recipe.

Plan ahead. You know your main meal will be somewhat over-the-top in terms of calories, so plan to eat more lightly during the day. Your best bets are lean protein and vegetable-based options, such as an egg white and veggie omelet for breakfast and a big salad topped with a can of chunk light tuna for lunch. Stuff only the turkey (not yourself). Enjoy a bit of everything you like, but keep your portions in check. One plate of food filled with your favorite festive treats (no seconds, with the exception of veggies), one alcoholic beverage (if you drink) and a small serving of dessert (or a sliver of several items) is the perfect amount to satisfy without going overboard.

Say bye-bye to leftovers. If you’re the host, pack up anything that might tempt you in subsequent days. Both your guests and your waistline will give thanks. Keep your portions in check this Thanksgiving.

Get back on track. The day after Thanksgiving, hit the gym and go right back to your regular, healthy eating routine.

To give or not to give at work Should you be hunting for gifts for co-workers on Black Friday? Expert tips for keeping the holidays happy — and simple — at work After spending 11 months as merely co-workers, the beginning of December heralds feelings of peace in cubicles and goodwill towards bosses. But before you make additions to your Black Friday shopping list, consider these tips from Lahle Wolfe, About.com’s “Women in Business” expert. “With everyone worrying about their jobs and the economy, the last thing people should have to worry about is spending money on gifts they’re unsure of,” she says. BEWARE OF THE GAG GIFT Increasingly, Wolfe sees offices encouraging gag gifts as part of “Secret Santa” or Pollyanna-style giving to alleviate pressure. But, she warns, this comes with its own set of problems. “A lot of offices do this, and it tends to make people uncomfortable and turn into teasing,” she says. “When you target gifts like this, stick with something very neutral. Go with something you might give a child, so that’s why it’s a gag.” Meaning, no cigars for the guy who is always on a smoke break, no watches for the co-worker who is always late, and no booze for the girl who can’t say no to happy hour.

You have enough going on without playing office Santa. Check your list twice to avoid stress or giving inappropriate gifts.

Never give ... Wolfe is a fan of the iTunes gift card, where $10 can go a long way in getting someone through a long Monday morning. But whatever you do, don't give these: Perfume and jewelry

“Perfume or jewelry are sort of intimate — it says that you’re paying attention,” cautions Wolfe. “If it’s something not generic enough that a guy or a girl could equally enjoy, it’s probably a little too personal.” Scented items Many people are allergic to artificial scents or are just

very particular about which ones they like. Again, cautions Wolfe, some people could interpret these as conveying intimacy — scents are personal. Anything religious Generic holiday ornaments and greeting cards are fine, but stay away from anything that’s directly faith-related.

The hottest IT jobs for 2012 The more time we spend plugged in, the more new jobs evolve Three careers that are heating up GETTY IMAGES

The progression of technology brings the expansion of IT jobs, and 2012 will be no exception. With more businesses going digital and phrases like “cloud storage becoming commonplace, the world of IT careers is budding with new opportunities. Robert Half Technology just released their list of the hottest jobs for 2012, many of them falling under the IT umbrella. Here are three that are especially promising:

There are now jobs to ensure that we have "positive digital experiences."

JULIA WEST

letters@metro.us

1 2 3 Mobile applications developer

User experience designer

Not surprisingly, this job comes out on top. Considering the long list of things you can do from your phone — banking, gaming and even video chatting — it’s no wonder that this field is booming. “Mobile development has surpassed Web development and is now leading in shaping future professionals, says Leonardo Mattiazzi, vice president of international business at IT services company Ci&T.

UX designers, to those in the know, “create positive digital experiences, according to Robert Half Technology. More international students coming to US for grad school Chinese students lead way, but the Middle East and India are sending more students for degrees as well STOCKBYTE

American campuses are becoming increasingly popular destinations for international students who want to attend grad school, according to new research. The Council of Graduate schools reports that new enrollment from foreign students increased by eight percent in 2011. There hasn’t been gain that significant since 2006. International students make up about 14.2 percent of the country’s entire graduate student body. Several U.S. graduate enrollment programs from other countries have progressed, most notably China. The presence of Chinese grad students in America grew by 21 percent. That’s compared to a growth of 20 percent, 16 percent and 14 percent in each of the past three years. Coming to the U.S. for grad school is also popular in the Middle East, which had an enrollment eight percent higher than last year. India also had a modest gain with two percent more students in American programs this year. South Korea is a different story, though. With a steady decrease of students from the country coming to enroll in

The most popular programs among international students are arts and humanities, business, education, engineering, life sciences, physical and Earth sciences, social sciences and psychology. Some support for protesters Counter-protesters to the OWS movement chant “Get a job!” Problem is that the protesters are demonstrating against the fact that corporate America is back to making profits yet won’t give them jobs. The OWS movement has some valid points, but corporate greed and corruption do not begin and end with Wall Street. They should be protesting in the halls of Congress and the White House. Our politicians are bought and paid for by big business. PAT CROCE, GREENWOOD LAKE

It’s apparent that the OWS movement has run its course. The core message of America being taken over by corporations is being lost. OWS is only antagonizing the 99 percent. OWS needs the people to support them, not fear them. LEONARD

Mr. Simms that the OWS movement has countless supporters. Americans are much more well-tempered and well-behaved than people in other countries. In these tough times we have to feed and raise children, work and buy goods — and we deserve good rest, too. Occupants are turning to extremists very easily and this nuisance has to come to an end. There are plenty of jobs around, but these runnynosed youths want $60K right now. That will never happen. So do not invite us, Mr. Simms, to participate in vandalism, hooliganism and other “isms.”

EAGLES 17 | GIANTS 10

Up next: at Saints (7-3)

Dec. 4: vs. Packers

What went wrong ... Up and down Eli — While Vince Young had an excuse for his poor play, Eli Manning had no such crutch for being equally sporadic. Manning finished 18-of-35 and was largely ineffective, as he was under siege most of the night thanks to a manic Eagles’ pass rush that had to pick up the slack for an uneven offense.

Eli Manning was sacked three times, including a sack and fumble by Jason Babin on the Giants’ final play. GETTY IMAGES

Running back need not apply — The Giants might as well follow the lead of the defending Super Bowl champion Packers and think of the running game as a necessary nuisance. Once again the Giants’ rushing game was horrific. It’s obvious Ahmad Bradshaw has been missed, but that still might not have mattered because Big Blue hasn’t been committed to the run all season

FUMBLED AWAY 3 Giants lose second straight as memories of late-season swoons return Manning fumbles on the final drive Now locked in tie atop NFC East

Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper — Riley Cooper, who had not registered a single catch heading into the contest, burned the Giants with a clutch eightyard touchdown reception to give the Eagles the late 17-10 lead. TONY WILLIAMS

What went right for the Giants ... Welcome back — The Giants welcomed Vince Young the way most top-notch defenses do to backup quarterbacks — rudely. Young was every bit as rusty as someone who’s played sparingly the last calendar year.

Rex Ryan fined for cursing The cost of dropping an F-bomb is apparently about $100,000. ESPN reported yesterday that Rex Ryan’s “shut the f— up” response to a fan at halftime of last Sunday’s Patriots game will cost the Jets coach at least $75,000 and as much as $100,000. He won’t be suspended. Ryan was fined

Princely debut — Rookie firstround pick Prince Amukamara was one of the numerous Big Blue defenders to have Young’s number, as he registered his first career interception. Amukamara, who had missed all of the season prior to last night with a broken foot, made a quick impact when he snatched Young’s underthrown ball at the 8:52 mark of the opening quarter.

2

$50,000 for flipping off a fan at an MMA event before the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami. Ryan was leaving the field after his halftime interview with NBC’s Michelle Tafoya when a fan shouted that Patriots coach Bill Belichick was better, prompting the offending comment from Ryan. It was caught on video and posted online. Ryan apologized for the incident last Monday at his daily press conference. METRO

Salsa time — Victor Cruz hasn’t passed Hakeem Nicks as the best wideout on the Giants just yet, but he might’ve taken the reins as the biggest downfield threat during his ascension. Cruz led Giants receivers with six catches for 128 yards, including a 47yard reception to get the Giants within scoring range with 1:25 remaining ... before Eli Manning’s game-ending fumble.

Packers stay unbeaten; Ravens win late It was a crazy day in the NFL as tight games ruled the scoreboard. 1. The Packers improved to 10-0 in a 35-26 win over the Bucs, but it was much closer than it looked thanks to two late Packer scores. 2. Dallas managed to overcome a late Rex Grossman touchdown as they won 27-24 in overtime over the Skins. 3. No one is happy when a team isn’t winning. Least of all the coach. Crosby to return vs. Islanders The long-awaited return of the Kid is almost over. Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby is expected to finally return from a concussion — and postconcussion syndrome — tonight against the Islanders. Crosby hasn’t played since last Jan. 5 when he was hit in the head in a game against Tampa Bay by Victor Hedman. He’s been dealing with the repercussions ever since.

In the 10 months since he’s played some had even speculated about whether he would be able to return to hockey at all. Crosby denied that this preseason and has been working out with team for the last couple months, first with no contact and fully starting Oct. 13. Crosby was leading the NHL in both goals and points at the time of his injury last season. It is unknown how much he’ll play against the Islanders. METRO
