Queens firebombing suspect confesses DCPI
The man questioned in a string of homemade bomb attacks in Queens confessed last night, according to the New York Daily News. Raylazir Legend, 40, said he hurled homemade Molotov cocktails at two homes, a mosque, a deli
and a Hindu temple because he has feuds at each of the locations, according to the News. Legend said he threw two homemade bombs at the front door of the AlKhoei Islamic Center because they wouldn’t let him use the bathroom.
He said he planned to throw three more bombs at the mosque, but then drove away. On Dec. 27, before the alleged firebombings, the suspect threatened workers at the 179th Street Deli after he was allegedly caught trying to shoplift.

Kin: Bullies drove teen to her death Staten Island teen succumbed to injuries she endured after being hit by bus Uncle of Amanda Cummings said she was a target of bullying A Staten Island teen is dead in what was likely a suicide after she was bullied for years, according to her family. Amanda Cummings, 15, died Monday at Staten Island University Hospital from injuries she sustained after a witness reported seeing her jump in front of a bus on Dec. 27. She was clutching a suicide note when she was struck, according to the NYPD. Her uncle, Keith Cummings, told Metro that the New Dorp High School sophomore had been bullied since the sixth grade. The most recent incidents, according to Cummings, involved a group of female students who sent his niece vicious text messages after she became involved with a 19-year-old. “They were threatening her to stay away from him,” Cummings said about the bullying Amanda endured. “There is no doubt in my mind that it played a role.” “I want him charged with statutory rape,” he fumed about the 19-yearold male. The NYPD said yesterday that Cummings' death is still under investigation, but no criminality is suspected. CASSANDRA GARRISON cassandra.garrison@metro.us
“You’re going to get it!” he shouted at deli workers, according to the New YorkPost. Legend will likely face arson and hate-crime charges, according to the News, after he allegedly made “broad anti-Muslim statements” while being questioned. METRO/CB

She would spend hours doing her hair and makeup, said her uncle, and loved experimenting with new looks. Tyler Musante, 15, a childhood friend of Cummings, said he was shocked to learn that her death was a possible suicide. “I wouldn’t have expected that from her,” he said. “Whenever she was with us, she seemed so strong emotionally. Extending the 7 train to New Jersey would have “the Jersey City waterfront as an extension of Midtown Manhattan,” said transit planner Bob Previdi.
Forget Secaucus. If Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s dream to extend the 7train to New Jersey is ever realized, the subway should stop in Hoboken, said one former MTA planner. After New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie killed plans for the ARC tunnel in 2010, which would have added an extra tunnel under the Hudson River for NJ Transit and Amtrak trains, an idea circulated to run the 7 line through the tunnel instead. In fact, Bloomberg’s office has already spent $250,000 to analyze the feasibility of extending the 7 to Secaucus. Bloomberg is reportedly pleased with the findings and, according to reports, will make an announcement on the plan within the coming months. But Bob Previdi, a former New York City Transit spokesman and planner, thinks extending it to Hoboken makes much more sense than Secaucus. Hoboken’s bustling sta-
Why the 7 should go to Hoboken Previdi makes his case for why The Mile Square City makes the most sense. Secaucus has four tracks, and Hoboken has 18. “At Secaucus you would have to build at least one, if not a pair, of new tracks,” said Previdi. 500,000 passengers go through Penn Station daily, but at Hoboken, just 32,000 riders use the station every day. Adding the 7 would mean 30,000 more passengers could move through Hoboken in a peak hour, Previdi estimated. Previdi surmised that moving the 7 to Hoboken would cost less than $5 billion — half the cost of an estimated $10 billion to send it to Secaucus. The PATH goes from Hoboken to 33rd Street, but it does not offer access to Midtown, Grand Central Terminal and Times Square, which the 7 train does.
tion, which already houses PATH trains and the light rail, is the perfect place for the 7, he said. “It would make it the third major train station in New York City,” he said. Hoboken has more tracks, more room in the station for passengers and is half the distance from Midtown than Secaucus — meaning half the cost, Previdi estimates. “I always look at transit projects for where you can get the biggest bang for your buck,” he said. But others cautioned against his enthusiasm, wondering how a cashstrapped MTA would fund the plan. “Who’s going to operate it, who’s going to pay for it and where are they going to get the money?” asked Jeffrey Zupan, at the Regional Plan Association. Too many questions remain to extend the 7 anywhere in New Jersey, he said. ALISON BOWEN

Manufacturing expansion hits six-month high Beats outlook Wall Street stocks kicked off 2012 with a rally on Tuesday after data showed U.S. manufacturing activity and construction spending picked up, signaling the economic recovery was gaining steam. Investors, looking to put cash to work after a tough year in 2011, were also encouraged by data from China and Germany suggesting improvement in those major economies. The broad S&P index has risen more than 10 percent from its Nov. 25 close. The pace of growth in
U.S. manufacturing accelerated in December, its best month since June, while a rise in new orders suggested decent momentum in 2012. Separately, construction spending in November surged to the highest in nearly 18 months. The Institute for Supply Management said national factory activity rose to 53.9, the best showing since June, from 52.7 in November. The reading topped expectations of a 53.2 reading, according to a Reuters poll. REUTERS

Voters register to cast their ballots during Republican caucuses at a school in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ready to rumble? Election season gets start in Iowa 28 The presidential campaign kicked off in earnest yesterday as voters met across the rural state of Iowa in the first contest to determine a Republican challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama. At least three candidates had a likely shot at victory — Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum — but an upset was not out of the question in the opening round of a Republican nominating contest that has been marked by volatility. Iowa’s caucuses are known more for weeding out candidates than picking the future president.

which until recently centered on televised debates rather than on-the-ground campaigning. Polls show Romney, the favorite of the party’s business wing, in a tight race with Paul, a U.S. congressman from Texas with libertarian views, and Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who hopes to consolidate Iowa’s large bloc of Christian conservatives. Romney is a former Massachusetts governor. Many voters remain undecided. The unusual caucus process adds an element of unpredictability.

NY Boat Show a must for dealers and buyers
Whether you’re a professional or simply a casual enthusiast, the NY Boat Show provides a unique venue for comparison-shopping and business dealing Average dealer will do a good chunk of his annual business here
Only at the Boat Show can prospective buyers comparison-shop among hundreds of boats.
Boating can be a tough sell in a recession, but that hasn’t stopped boat lovers from getting out on the water to enjoy their favorite pastime. Market research shows that Americans want affordable boats that are easy to use. Moreover, a reported 70 percent of buyers who attended a boat show purchased a new boat within three months of the show. Boat shows give potential boat buyers something they can’t find on the Internet or at a boat dealership: a chance to comparison-shop hundreds of boats without losing the experience of climbing onboard. Buyers can browse boats in a venue that encourages them to take their time to research, ask questions and compare
“If you’re serious about buying a boat, there’s no better and economical way than going to a boat show.” BEN WOLD notes. “If you’re serious about buying a boat, there’s no better and economical way than going to a boat show,” said Ben Wold, executive vice president at the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “Boat shows are marketplaces, and the dealers are ready to sell. The average dealer will do 30 to 50 percent of his annual business at the show or based on leads from the show.” METRO
Plenty of reasons The Progressive Insurance New York Boat Show is a barometer of what’s to come for Elisa Ruroede, owner of Port of Egypt Marine in Southold, NY: “For our business, it translates into sales, rentals and club memberships. For boaters, there’s nothing like getting aboard different models to compare the options,” Ruroede said. “We’re always excited to showcase at the show, but also to see what else is new while connecting with longtime and first-time boaters,” she said. Boat Show celebrates 107 years
www.metro.us WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2012
1941
New York Boat Show started by boat builders and engine manufacturers Event became nation’s first modern boat show From 1905 to today, show marks more than 100 years of boating passion and skill When a group of marine engine manufacturers and boat builders met in New York City to produce the nation’s first boat show, they didn’t know they’d started a tradition that would be thriving more than a century later. The first National Motor Boat Show was held in 1905, showcasing just 25 types of boats near what is now Grand Central Station. Over the years, the “World’s No. 1 Boat Show” outgrew its birth-
place and moved from Midtown to the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx to the New York Coliseum, attracting celebrities like Jackie Onassis, Robert Redford, Walter Cronkite and plenty of ordinary boat-lovers. In 1986, facing a greater demand for exhibition space, the boat show arrived at the Javits Center. This year, the New York Boat Show celebrates its 107th season in New York
City. How has the Boat Show changed over time? “As shows have evolved, they’ve become broader, they’ve become a way to promote the lifestyle of boating, for boaters to connect with clubs and sports,” says Ben Wold, executive vice president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Though the country’s first modern boat show now features hundreds of brands, it remains true to its origins. METRO

After a tumultuous 2011 that saw his engagement to Crystal Harris (who I like to think of as a very low-rent Kardashian in her media manipulation) fizzle, Hugh Hefner, 85, is vowing to avoid marriage for 2012. “This year has been a very interesting year for me. Married life isn’t for me.” You’d think the man who is known as an international Playboy and has called a mansion filled with frolicking naked women home for most of his life would have figured that out, oh, about 65 years ago.

While Greene has been filming a guest stint on struggling TV drama “Pan Am,” she reportedly hasn’t been making any friends among the cast. “Ashley came rolling on to the set acting like a queen bee,” a source says, according to Hollyscoop.
“She was stuck-up with the crew and acted like appearing on TV amounted to slumming. She referred to herself as a ‘real movie star,’ and said she was sure her guest stint would boost ratings.” Folks from the show reportedly set up a “welcome lunch” for Greene, which she blew off. It’s powerful, ‘Pariah,’ about a mother at odds with her lesbian daughter, has earned comparisons to a similar film ‘This is a different story,’ says star Kim Wayans Best known as a comedic actress, Kim Wayans takes a serious turn in Dee Rees’ “Pariah,” as a religious woman at odds with her teenage daughter’s sexuality. The move to more dramatic work is a long time coming for Wayans, who says she’s been trying to convince casting directors to see her as something other than an “In Living Color” cast member. This is a moving, personal film. What drew you to it?

Even in so-called gay cinema, the lesbian side of the story doesn’t get told that often — especially the teen experience. Why do you think that is?
I don’t know, maybe it has something to do with being in a male-dominated culture. It’s like, gay men are still men, they’re just gay. So they have more opportunities to tell their stories, they have more platforms to tell their stories from, I think, than lesbian women.
You’re in a female-fronted, African-American movie that starts with the letter P — and it’s getting great response at festivals. Do you find yourself having to explain that this isn’t “Precious” and you’re not Mo’Nique?
You know, so far I haven’t really encountered that. [Laughs] I’ve heard the comparisons because of all the things that you listed that we do have in common, but this is a different story. It’s a dramatic story, but it’s a different story from “Precious,” with a different merit. That probably more reflects the limited thinking of others.

that’s something that I’ve been dealing with — being put in a box. “This is what you do, you’re a wacky comedian.” So I understand that. It’s easier
for people to label things rather than see all the gray in between. It’s the Hollywood thing, and you just have to see it for what it is.
It’s difficult. You just keep trying. You come across good stuff, your manager comes across a great script, you go, “Oh, I love it,” and then she calls the casting director and they’re like, “Sorry. We love Kim, she’s a great comedian and all that, but we need a dramatic actress.” So what I’m hoping is that this movie opens up doors for me, because now people can see that I can do more than just be funny. But you just have to be determined and keep knocking on doors.

Skip the misleading traffic-boosting tactics Pageview-racking slideshows and catchy-yetmisleading headlines are commonplace in the blogosphere; many publications use them to increase traffic (and therefore advertising revenue). Unfortunately, these techniques often don’t result in quality readership growth. Slideshows skew pageviews-per-visit stats, making it more difficult to accurately gauge traffic stickiness; misleading headlines may put your content in front of new, unsuspecting readers — but those readers are less likely to stay, and may even have negative reactions to being tricked. Make this the year you get your best body ever There’s no quick fix for getting a lean body. Just as you didn’t get flabby overnight, you aren’t suddenly going to become toned either. Acquiring your dream body takes time, patience and effort. The watchwords for success and long-term change are “start small.” “People should just start moving in general — get out, take the car less,” says Fawn Cronin, Boston Sports Clubs’ fitness manager. “Walk those two blocks to the coffee shop. Without a strong core, there’s no support.” Cronin says people who aren’t used to exercise should expect some discomfort from the effort; however, pain is a cue to stop. “I don’t believe that ‘no pain,
no gain’ is the motto today,” she says. “Approach exercise slowly. Listen to your body. If you feel tightness, adjust. Listening to your body is number one.” And now that the weather is colder, you’ll likely be tempted to coop up indoors all day. But being active doesn’t require powerhours at the gym. “Even if it’s just to a video game, get up and get moving,” advises Cronin. “There’s so many things you can do around the house, something functional in your everyday life. Just get moving.” LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us

Choose weights challenging enough for you to press overhead but light enough to maintain good posture. Line the heels up with the hips, with the weights in front of your shoulders. Hinging at the hips, sit back into a squat — simulating a movement that is comparable to sitting into a chair.

myletters&games Anyone but Obama in 2012
Letters letters@metro.us
Monsters, one and all In an interview recently, George W. said, “The best thing for the economy is war.” Bush also said he doesn’t miss being president — but he does miss being commander-inchief. What part was the most fun for you, Mr. Bush? Sending thousands of young American men and women to their deaths or the millions of maimed Arabs? Now Obama and Congress are trying to start a war with Iran. They are not fools, they are monsters like Bush. CHARLES MICHAEL COUCH,
Fact: 47 percent of U.S. households pay no federal income tax! Obama’s 2011 one-year employment tax reduction will deprive our social security fund of $119 billion. If Obama is allowed his way, he will do the same thing in 2012 for another $105 billion shortfall. Borrowing money from China to give foreign aid, to send us stimulus checks and to reduce our payments into social security is insane. Our national debt may be staggering, but it is dwarfed by our existing obligations to social secu-
rity and government pensions. We can’t survive 4 more years of calculated sabotage to our economy as we drift into a failed socialistic European model. Anyone — and I mean anyone — but Obama in November!

After losing Brook Lopez to injury, not to mention losing their last five games, the Nets got a small measure of good news yesterday. Power forward Kris Humphries underwent an MRI on his left shoulder which came back negative — a positive as the club
expected the injury could be serious. Instead it was diagnosed as a sprain, and Humphries traveled with the team to Boston for tonight’s game. He is listed as questionable. Humphries missed the game against Indiana Monday after apparently

D’Antoni blames losses on injury Coach, players believe Stoudemire, Shumpert returns will cure team’s struggles Knicks have dropped three of four Dialing up the defense

The Knicks struggled to score against the Raptors in their last game without Amar’e Stoudemire in the lineup.
Either the Knicks are supremely confident or they’re just plain delusional, because despite their early offensive struggles, they all believe the biggest deterrents are the injuries and not a lack of talent at key positions. Since their thrilling last-second win over the Celtics on opening day, the Knicks (2-3) have dropped three of their last four, averaging 82 points per game in those losses. Amar’e Stoudemire

missing a low-post presence due to the foot injury Lopez suffered in the preseason. The Nets’ entire frontcourt combined is being outscored by Boston’s Kevin Garnett. Humphries is averaging 12.4 points and 10 rebounds per game this season.
“Once we get our full roster back then we’ll see where we have to pick up areas — but after watching tapes I’m encouraged,” D’Antoni said. “I know we played bad [Monday night versus Toronto], but all we have to do is hang in there, get through this period, get guys healthy and then see what holes we have and where we have to fix them.” TONY WILLIAMS sports@metro.us

Kemba makes return to Garden When Bronx native and defending NCAA national champion Kemba Walker faces the Knicks tonight he’ll feel right at home in Madison Square Garden. After all, maybe the lasting memory of last year’s college basketball season was Walker’s crossover, pull-up jumper against Pittsburgh in the Big East tournament at the Garden. Not memorable for Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni though apparently. “He’s a very good player, but we haven’t seen a lot of him,” D’Antoni sad. With an aging (and now cut) Chauncey Billups at point, many Knicks fans hoped he drop to No. 17 in the 2011 NBA Draft. Instead, the Bobcats nabbed him at No. 9. The rookie is averaging 11.5 points per game — all off the bench. METRO/MO
Bears clean house The Chicago Bears announced Monday that head coach Lovie Smith would return. However, the team also officially stated yesterday that GM Jerry Angelo was fired and offensive coordinator Mike Martz would not be returning. METRO

Turner remains in San Diego No, that headline is not a joke. Much-maligned, to put it mildly, head coach Norv Turner will be back in charge of the Chargers next year, according to the team. Turner is just 17-15 the last two years and has missed the playoffs in both seasons.

END OF AN ERA FOR KOBE? Opinion
JASON McINTYRE SPORTS@METRO.US
However you rang in the New Year, I’m 97 percent sure you had a better time than Kobe Bryant. In case you missed it, his wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce last month after 10 years of marriage.
I
did situation. The set of documents that you’ll never see: Kobe’s divorce settlement. It probably would have fallen somewhere between Michael Jordan’s and Tiger’s, anywhere from $100 million to $200 million. Kobe made a giant mistake and they never got a pre-nup. Compounding Kobe’s terrible start to 2012: The Lakers’ new coach, Mike Brown, is pretty bad, the team looks old and sluggish and the 33-year-old Bryant is struggling with his shot. Bottom line, the Lakers don’t appear to be an elite team anymore, and you get a sense the end of an era is approaching. When a guy’s losing legal battles with his wife all day and then with his legs at night on the court, eventually he’s going to take out his frustrations on someone. I’d guess it’ll be his teammates. Eventually.
guess Kobe wasn’t able to procure a gigantic, seven-figure diamond ring this time to get his wife to come back, like he did in 2003 after he admitted to Colorado police he had sex with a hotel employee. To recap: The 19year-old employee claimed he raped her, Bryant denied it, they went to court and the case was dismissed. The detailed, jawdropping documents are on the Smoking Gun, if you’re interested in revisBryant is getting divorced after iting 10 years — and one huge that scandal — with ex-wife Vanessa. sor-

SETON HALL 75, UCONN 63
Seton Hall crushes Huskies Maybe that 12-1 start wasn’t a fluke after all. Six days after Seton Hall was blown out by Syracuse, 75-49, the Pirates answered critics with an easy win over No. 8 UConn. The Huskies got off to a quick start, taking a 11-2 lead, but from then on the Pirates
were in control. Seton Hall went on a 33-11 run to close out the first half and took a 13-point lead into the break, largely thanks to 16 first-half turnovers by the Huskies. UConn freshman Andre Drummond, who said he didn’t know who Pirates’ star Herb Pope was leading up to the game, was held to four points. Pope finished with 15 points on 7-of-19 shooting. UConn shot 35 percent from the field. METRO

Forest City’s building block
The building’s design To judge from the renderings, the stiffly geometric results — with their shifting, syncopated planes — recall the same Deconstructivist aesthetic that inspired a number of buildings on West 42nd Street. One example is the Conde Nast building at 4 Times Square.
Will the prefab tower at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards look like real architecture, or will it be Lego-like? The most remarkable thing about the recently released plans for a residential highrise at Brooklyn’s much-debated Atlantic Yards site is not the design itself, but rather the manner in which the project will be built. Conceived by SHoP Architects for Forest City Ratner, the building will be made up of prefabricated units constructed off-site and then assembled on the premises. The prefab component of construction should allow for considerable savings. The project, known for
now as B2 (as in “Barclays Two”), is part of Bruce Ratner’s $4.9 billion, 22-acre Atlantic Yards development. The architectural centerpiece of that project will, of course, be the Barclays Stadium — which SHoP also worked on while preserving the general vision of Ellerbe Becket, the firm that originally designed the arena after Frank Gehry was very publicly sent packing. B2 is the first of what will eventually be three residential high-rises that will stand on the southern and

eastern elevations of the Barclays arena along Dean Street, Sixth Avenue and Flatbush Avenue. The building will contain 350 of the development’s 1,500 units (half of them for low- and middleincome families). At 32 stories, it promises to be the tallest prefabricated, modular structure ever built. JAMES GARDNER TheRealDeal.com is a daily blog and monthly magazine covering real estate in the New York metro area.
A rendering of Atlantic Yards’ first residential tower.
Perhaps feeling that the pared-down geometry of the structure needed some enhancement, the architects have emphasized the semi-autonomy of each zone by casting it in a different color. Aesthetically, the great question surrounding B2 is whether, when completed, it will look like real architecture. Will this development make it possible for good architecture to be produced at bargain-basement prices?

Your new year home makeover
Practical, cheap and easy ways to give your place a face-lift for 2012 Interior designer Michelle Workman says: Grab a bucket of paint and go We spoke to Michelle Workman, interior designer to stars such as Jennifer Lopez
and John Travolta, about a few easy ways to give your home a new year’s face-lift.

Work in more color “The easiest thing to do is paint the walls in a bright color like turquoise, emerald green or coral, all of which are cozy colors for winter,” advises the designer. It’s a lowcost way to completely transform a room. Also consider purchasing accessories that you can swap out according to your seasonal moods. Workman suggests Murano glass lamps, which can be easily found at secondhand stores, and accent coffee tables. “They can change the room’s aesthetic,” she adds.
Have fun with bright colors.
