Shen Yun presents colorful and exhilarating performances of classical Chinese dance and music. A performance by Shen Yun is a presentation of traditional Chinese culture as it once was: a study in grace, wisdom, and the virtues distilled from the ďŹ ve millennia of Chinese civilization. Every year, Shen Yun unveils an entirely new lineup of dances, songs, and musical scores. At the core of Shen Yun’s performances is classical Chinese dance with China’s numerous ethnic and folk dance styles rounding out the evening.

In a collection of short pieces, audiences travel from the Himalayas to tropical lake-ďŹ lled regions, from the legends of the culture’s creation over 5,000 years ago to the story of Falun Dafa in China today, from the highest heavens down to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom. During a single performance, Shen Yun transports audiences across time and space, offering a cross-cultural experience that not only entertains, but more broadly, educates and inspires. After seeing the show, one audience member marveled, “This production ... is nothing short of a miracle!â€?

A DANCE SYSTEM TEMPERED OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS Classical Chinese dance is one of the most demanding and expressive art forms in the world. Grounded in 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, classical Chinese dance entails systematic training in movements and postures, as well as very difficult leaps, ips, spins and other tumbling techniques. Richly expressive, it portrays personalities and feelings with unparalleled clarity, making

classical Chinese dance ideal for storytelling. Built on traditional aesthetics, classical Chinese dance was once passed down among the people, in imperial courts and ancient plays. Over thousands of years, it was constantly reďŹ ned, eventually developing into the vast and distinctly Chinese dance form we know today.

City says goodbye to young lives lost More than 1,000 attend funeral for little girls killed in Christmas Day fire Mother who survived blaze talks for half an hour about her daughters Asks that her girls be remembered through good deeds

NEW YORK. The fatal

fire occurred in the early morning hours of Christmas Day. The blaze began from embers Badger and boyfriend Michael Borcina removed from the fireplace after they were up late wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve, fire investigators said. Borcina removed the ashes at the girls’ request, according to reports, so Santa would not be burned coming down the chimney. The embers ignited, and only Badger and Borcina were able to escape as the house was destroyed. Badger’s parents, Pauline, 69, and Lomer Johnson, 71, also perished in the flames.

More than 1,000 people packed inside Midtown’s St. Thomas Church Thursday to pay their respects to three little girls who died in a tragic Christmas Day fire. Madonna Badger, the grieving mother of Lily, 9, and twins Grace and Sarah, 7, spoke tenderly about her children at a public funeral in their memory. “I want to remember my girls out loud,” Badger said. “My girls are in my heart. The girls died in a fire at Badger’s home in Stamford, Conn. The home, which was under renovation at the time, was wired for smoke detectors and alarms, but they hadn't been installed yet, according to the New York Post. Matthew Badger, the girls’ father, who is separated from his wife, did not speak, but asked Rev. Dr. William S. Shillady to speak for him. behind Romney in this week’s Iowa nominating contest, rising to third place among likely primary voters, according to a 7 News/Suffolk University tracking poll, edging ahead of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum describes himself on the campaign trail as a frugal man of faith and limited means. “I come from a little different background than most Republicans,” he said at a Jan. 2 town-hall meeting in Newton, Iowa, where he recalled playing as a child outside the coal mines in which his grandfather toiled. Santorum has come a long way from those gritty early days to the top tier of the Republican presidential primary race after coming in second to Mitt Romney in the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

THE IMPORTANCE OF

‘PORTLANDIA’ I

As the comedy show returns for a second season on IFC, Fred Armisen talks about addictive television, the importance of editing and why he likes to get out of control

n one sketch during the new season of “Portlandia,” the characters played by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein decide to watch a single episode of “Battlestar Galactica” before they head out to a friend’s birthday party. Unable to pull themselves away from the TV after 45 minutes, they miss the party, end up devouring the first season, and over a few consecutive days, the whole series. Jobs are lost, bills go unpaid and they stop getting up to use the bathroom. At one point Brownstein tiredly says, “I a little bit feel like I have a bladder infection, but I’m just going to get antibiotics after the next episode.” This scene is typical of the comedic duo’s adoration of the absurd, and is one that could easily apply to viewers of their show.

Quoted

“We film so much stuff. We could do a whole season of what we didn’t use.” ARMISEN

“Portlandia” premieres Friday at 10 p.m. on IFC. Brownstein, left, and Armisen will also appear live on Jan. 20 at the Bowery Ballroom as part of a “Portlandia” live show. CHRIS HORNBECKER/IFC

The first season recently began streaming on Netflix, and the second season premieres Friday. Armisen says he has found himself in similarly intense viewing marathons with shows like “Game of Thrones” and “The Wire.” What makes the comedy hit so hard is Armisen and Brownstein’s ability to create relatable situations that go awry. He says the pair are able to get so ridiculous because almost half of the show is improvised. “We film so much stuff,” he says. “We could do a whole season of what we

didn’t use.” Armisen says a large portion of that unused footage is he and Brownstein ruining the scenes by laughing uncontrollably at what the other one has come up with on the spot. He is quick to give away the credit for the finished product. “We’re not part of the editing process,” he explains, “because those guys are geniuses.” Armisen says relinquishing that authority is liberating because every time he watches the edits, he finds himself saying, “Oh my gosh, I never thought that we wouldn’t need that.” “That’s a really weird part of the process, where you think you’re in control, but you know it’s good that you’re not in control.” PAT HEALY

2 Real-life inspiration

‘That guy does exist!’ Armisen is probably best known to mainstream audiences for his portrayal of President Obama on “Saturday Night Live.” The characters he plays on “Portlandia” are heightened versions of everyday people and self-serious hipster types (think feminist bookstore owners and bike messengers) that are so spot-on they feel like they must come from an arsenal of acquaintances. Not so, he says: “It’s a weird thing, where it happens afterward. ... I thought it was just in my imagination, but then I’ll drive around Portland and totally ... see guys like that. So it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, that guy does exist!’”

Is that your final answer? It may not be the end of the world ... yet But as we begin 2012, the year the Mayan calendar ends, we ask a few celebrities what they would do on Judgment Day Jamie Bell, actor What’s your last meal? It would definitely be a meat dish. I love meat. It’s so bad, but damn, it’s pretty good. Maybe just cook a whole cow. What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower? Maybe “Let it Be” [by The Beatles]. Or you could go out on something completely ironic like [the Monty Python song] “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” What is the last movie you’ll watch? I would love to say something really influential, about the goodness of humanity, but it would probably be “Jurassic Park.”

Wiz Khalifa, rapper What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower? “Save The Children” by Marvin Gaye. What is the last movie you’ll watch and with whom? “The Notebook” with Amber Rose. What is the one luxury item you’ll bring with you to the New World? My laptop. Who is the one fellow celebrity with whom you’ll want to travel to the New World? Amber.

What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower? “Countdown” by Beyonce. What is the last movie you would watch and with whom? The last movie I would watch would be “You’ve Got Mail” and I’d watch it with my mom. One luxury item you’d bring with you to the new world? In the post-apocalyptical world where it’s like Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” and everyone is dirty and disgusting, I’d bring a Judith Leiber clutch, like in my rags. One celebrity you’d want to travel with to the new world? Aaron Sorkin

Adam Carolla, comedian What would your last meal be? I’d go to the busiest restaurant, whose kitchen was most backed up, and then I would change my order three or four times. I’d stretch it out. I’d eat lobsters raised on Snickers bars then dipped in a buttermilk substance mixed with tempura sauce and then deep-fried. With heroin sprinkled on it. What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower?

There’s two ways you can go: You can go with one of my favorites like John Hiatt or Elvis Costello and hear something you really want to hear. Or, a better approach would be to take a horrible song like “Maneater” by Hall & Oates and want to die. What is the last movie you’ll watch and with whom? I would pick a long movie. There’s a theme here, I want to stretch it out. I’d watch “Goodfellas” with Joe Pesci and make sure he got drunk and have him re-enact his scenes. I’d have Ray Liotta there, too, and make them do their crazy laughs for me. What is the one luxury item you’ll bring with you to the New World? Wait a minute, this is stretching the boundaries of reality. You can’t transport items. You’re dead. There’s no taking anything with you. METRO

Would you like to study the Bible – seriously? “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 Lots of people discuss the Bible, but not as many study it carefully and comprehensively. If you are willing to invest some time and effort (not money) we will help. Private and small group studies are available on a variety of subjects and study levels. NYC’s #1 FREE DAILY WEEKEND, JANUARY 6-8, 2012

Sizing up the 2012 midseason schedule FOX

Live from the Television Critics Association press tour: Metro heads to California to find out which networks will stick to their resolutions this year

I

t’s that time of year when everyone is making resolutions — even television networks. Midseason offers programmers another shot at tweaking their schedules and wooing audiences with new programming. So I’ve headed to Pasadena, Calif., where the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour is taking place, to check out the new offerings and see if the networks’

promises of fresh, exciting shows are truly long-term commitments or doomed to be forgotten two weeks from now. For live reports from the TCA press tour, follow me on Twitter @amberatmetro and visit www.metro.us/tv. Here are a few TCA highlights that I’ll be covering:

“Smash” There hasn’t been a show with this much pre-premiere buzz since “Glee” — and I’m not just saying that because this, too, is a musiccentric series. I’ll be talking to star Katherine McPhee and the rest of the cast in this Steven Spielberg-produced drama, which details the opening of a Broadway musical, on Friday. (Premieres Feb. 6 at 10 p.m. on NBC)

Fox hit “New Girl,” starring Zooey Deschanel, is opening its set to the TCA press tour.

and two of my favorite female-centric sitcoms are opening their sets to TV critics on Monday. (“Suburgatory” airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. “New Girl” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.)

Set visits: “Suburgatory” and “New Girl”

Vice presidents new and old

Funny ladies have been the toast of the new TV season,

Al Gore, Current TV Chairman and Co-Founder —

and, of course, our former vice president — will speak to critics about the state of cable news on Jan. 13. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, meanwhile, just plays the vice president on TV. Still, she’ll be talking about the gig and her new HBO comedy, “Veep,” on Jan. 13. (“Veep” will premiere in April on HBO.) AMBER RAY

This week, I asked everyone for a creative, yet familyfriendly way, to say “media wh—.” And you all replied with your best options. (I guess we all know what will be on Kim Kardashian’s tomb stone?) Also, don’t be like @Rosie286 — make sure you pick up your Metro. The Word will keep you warm ... with terrible, terrible jokes.

This just needs to be said: Is Clay Aiken always wearing foundation? Bronzer? And is that fake beard hair? Am I crazy in thinking he always looks like a ginger Real Doll? What is going on? OK, sorry. Tangent over. Here he is, filming last year for the new season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” which premieres Feb. 15.

offering the last night of Perry’s tour in November as an example: “He was totally uninterested and seemed annoyed he was there. I don’t think he sat through one song.” And then there was Brand’s response to her “Saturday Night Live” hosting stint in December. Perry reportedly begged Brand to appear in a skit on the episode, but he declined and stayed in L.A. instead. And after it aired? “He told her that she wasn’t that funny,” the source says. “That really hurt.” But, um, he was right? It’s hard to sit through a Katy Perry concert and she was Nancy Kerrigan-esque terrible on “SNL.” Now, if only she would hit him with a taste of his own medicine and tell him to buy a bigger pair of pants.

We citizens have certainly noticed how prices have risen for all goods and services. They are going up, up, up while the value of the dollar goes down, down, down. This is the result of money inflation by the government and its partner in crime, the privately held Federal Reserve Bank. Hopefully the next election will correct this treachery.

Giants open playoffs hosting Falcons this Sunday Could use a big performance from Jacobs, Bradshaw Run game has improved recently

JEFF ZELEVANSKY/GETTY IMAGES

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has had a career year, but that doesn’t mean Big Blue wants to rest solely on his right arm. Sunday’s NFC wild-card playoff matchup against the Falcons is full of storylines — but perhaps none bigger than the question of who will rise up among the Giants’ one-dimensional offense and provide Manning with some semblance of balance. The Giants ended the regular season in an unfamiliar role of worst rushing attack in the 32-team league. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he’s been stressing all week to his offensive line and running backs to give Manning a reprieve. “I think we’re going to have to be [balanced], but I think we will be,” Coughlin said. “Hopefully, we will run the ball better than we did last weekend, for example. Consistency is the word. I’m not trying to say good, bad or indifferent. But we’ve had four or

five games in a row where we’ve rushed the ball for over 100 yards. I’ll look for that to happen again.” Manning would never call out a struggling teammate, but even he knows he needs help. “I hope that we can run the ball this week,” Manning said, delicately danc-

ing around any specific criticism. “That’s what you want to do, especially when you get late in the season [when] it’s cold. [And] especially if it’s nasty weather like they say we might have. That’s what you want to have. Are we going to have to throw the ball successfully? Yes, but

you have to understand the circumstances and we have to find a way to find completions, be smart with the ball and, when there are opportunities, hit a couple of big plays. Hopefully we can do that.” TONY WILLIAMS sports@metro.us

In professional sports, the player always wins. The Sacramento Kings fired head coach Paul Westphal yesterday after a 2-5 start and, maybe more importantly, an argument with second-year center DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins publicly demanded a trade last week after expressing dissatisfaction with the offense. Westphal was 51120 in two-plus years with the Kings.

WEEKEND, JANUARY 6-8, 2012

Here are some guys that emerged as truly different players in 2011:

Julio down by the schoolyard Julio Jones ran a ridiculous 4.39 second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine and has ideal size at 6foot-3 and 220 pounds. In his rookie year, he proved that he knows how to use those measurements. Jones is already a better receiver than teammate Roddy White, dominating defenses with his physicality. The consistency will come.

Top NBA pickups Early-season adds can pay big dividends for the rest of the season:

Moore for Denarius

1

The ability to go deep at the NFL level is an art form. Denarius Moore showed that he’s close to mastering it already. His ability to adjust on long balls and make extremely tough catches is some-thing that can’t be taught.

Making it rain

2

If it wasn’t for Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham, we’d be talking about Aaron Hernandez as the biggest freak at the tight end position. His skill set is so unique that the Patriots call reverses and bubble screens for him. That’s because in the open field, Hernandez makes defenders miss like a wideout.

Brandon Rush, SF, GSW — Dorell Wright is already on thin ice as starter. Rush has more raw talent. Marreese Speights, PF, MEM — Speights certainly has the offensive skills to excel while Zach Randolph (knee) is out. We’ll see if his defense is strong enough.

3

Gary Neal, SG, SA — Manu Ginobili is out at least six weeks after undergoing surgery on his shooting hand. Neal’s shooting ability helps.

Julio Jones has the ability to be a Top 5 NFL wideout.
