Calling the ousting of their organization “bigoted” and “disheartening,” veterans denied permission to march in the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston banned together yesterday in their own show of celebration for the second year in a row. Members of Veterans For Peace, who were deemed “too political” to appear in the traditional gathering, led a second parade through the streets with hundreds of supporters in tow to promote peace and equality. The veterans marched in the St. Patrick’s Peace Parade alongside people from the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community for the second annual parade. Multiple groups were denied access to the main celebration. “It’s crazy to me,” said Warren Knowles, a member of the gay community who said he is
Incidents Throughout the holiday weekend, police responded to various incidents: Four people between the ages of 18 and 23 were arrested early Saturday morning after police were called for reports of a loud party in Brighton.

His condition was not immediately available.

Not everyone along the parade route agreed. “This must be the freak section,” said a man as he walked by the Peace Parade members. The man refused to give his name when asked by a reporter. Members of Occupy Boston also joined the march after Veterans For Peace stood with them during their encampment last year. Other groups said they will work with the veterans to make the parade grow each year. “We want the exclusion dropped,” said Cole Harrison, a member of MassPeace Action, a Cambridge-based human rights group. “And our parade will be bigger and better every year until then. George W. Bush experienced the systemic flaws of the two-party system in 2004, when he decided to pursue a previously bipartisan issue, space. hile the GOP circus fought for the honor of representing Puerto Rico as “El Presidente” yesterday, we wanted to focus on some scholarly journalistic discussion that sheds some light — though, in our opinion, not enough — on the inherent failures of U.S. party politics. Washington Post political correspondent Ezra Klein shook up the erudite politisphere last week when, in an essay for The New Yorker and then in a reprise during guesthosting duties on MSNBC’s “Up With Chris Hayes”, he put forth the mysteriously uncommon yet surprisingly obvious assertion that presidential speechifying can actually have a net negative effect on administration success, as op-
Metropolitik BRAYDEN SIMMS POLITICAL WORLDLINESS FOR AN IMPOLITE WORLD
@METROPOLITIK position politicians are actually heavily incentivized to ensure the failure of their across-the-aisle rivals. Klein sought to dispute the historical wisdom that “the power of the president is the power to persuade,” arguing that grand speeches from the executive actually do his platform a disservice, since the other party cannot reasonably be expected to offer “bipartisan” support to a group of people whose successes inversely affect their own re-elections. The bigger deal a president makes of any one issue — wit-
ness, in recent months, Obama’s failed pursuit of the American Jobs Act; or, in years past, President Bush’s colossal efforts and, ultimately, failure at privatizing Social Security — the more vigorously opposition lawmakers are encouraged to oppose it. In this polarized environment, policy wins for one party can be directly interpreted as failures for the other; so pols stymie the efforts of their rivals regardless of any potential benefits.
K
lein pays particular attention to the way in which a president’s message can backfire, as opposition figures are put in the clear position of 1: supporting their rivals and, thereby, losing; or 2: torpedoing rival legislation and improving their own political futures. But we think this analysis, while certainly interesting, misses the wider implications: that U.S.
politicians personally benefit from weakening America, when to help the country would mean also helping party rivals and hurting themselves. The two-party system has many flaws, but none quite so damning as this: Americans suffer as a direct result of the petty machinations of our two grand political parties. This is how, under Obama, Republicans have suddenly reversed their beliefs on, for instance, the insurance mandate in health care, originally developed by right-wing think tanks and backed by all manner of establishment R’s: To support it would mean supporting the president, so they thought up reasons to dislike it. And similar things happened with cowardly Democrats under Bush. So long as we vote for D’s and R’s, we suffer. Because no matter which party wins, Americans inevitably lose. Segel is keeping mum on the news, saying only, “I don’t comment on my personal life these days.” Also turning heads recently at the Chateau Marmont were Cameron Diaz and Jude Law when they were reportedly spotted making out on the patio, according to Hollyscoop. Witnesses say Law picked up a $400 bar tab before the two headed to one of the bar’s private bungalows. But that apparently wasn’t private enough, as another patron is said to have shouted “get a room” at the pair, who left shortly after.

Are Williams and Segel a thing?
On Friday, Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network canceled Rosie O’Donnell’s “The Rosie Show” after only five months on air. OWN says it was because of “poor ratings” — and true, the ratings were a disaster — but reports are coming out that O’Donnell was also less than an ideal boss. A former staffer told
The Daily Beast that the show “was a f—ing hellhole,” and partially blamed O’Donnell’s bad management for its demise. The numbers speak for themselves: O’Donnell’s new show averaged 186,000 viewers, a far cry from when she reigned on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” which had 5 million viewers daily. This doesn’t bode well for Oprah or OWN. What’s next?

n the early hours of Sunday morning, Ryan Sambol seemed content. Standing outside the Mohawk Patio, where his band, Strange Boys, had just completed their sixth and final rocking set of the week, he took in the foot traffic jam of the wasted and weary and seemed pleased that the week was over, but grateful for the fun times he’d had. Based in Austin, Sambol’s is a different experience than most of the artists who play SXSW. “Everyone in the whole world comes here,” he said, “so you just sit back and let your phone ring and then hang out with some good old buddies.” SXSW is full of good old buddies if you’re a music journalist. My first taste of SXSW was flavored by veteran favorites Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Cliff and Fiona Apple, who all delivered captivating performances. But there’s so much more reward in finding new artists. So after Springsteen’s set on Thursday night, I set out to find some new good buddies. It’s so refreshing when talent trumps pop star packaging and a band like Alabama Shakes can create buzz. SXSW is scheduled in such a way that many acts perform multiple shows, creating several different chances to see them. The Shakes benefited from this word-of-mouth/word-of-Web process, so by Friday night they

Hip-hop hooray More than ever, hip-hop was well represented at SXSW, presumably because of the breakout success of Odd Future and Kanye West’s descent upon Austin last year. In the clubs down Sixth Street you could almost hear as many DJs as guitars. A definite standout was MexicanAmerican MC Eric White, who laid his confessional rhymes down to a DJ, live drummer, guitarist
and violin player. On the mainstream level, Nas turned in a nostalgic good vibes show at the Moody Theatre, with a set made to look like Queensbridge, N.Y., complete with subway stop stairs and towering apartment buildings. A little less mainstream (for now), Theophilus London proved that he could both rap and sing like a champ, his gruff baritone a perfect counterpart to Solange Knowles’ sweet voice on the song “Overseas.” It won’t be too long until the pair is singing this for much bigger audiences.
On Friday night she worked the packed crowd under the tent on the patio of Easy Tiger into such a frenzy that when the band finished, the way that everybody yelled out felt very primal.

may have been the most talkedabout new act; their show had a line around the block. What makes Alabama Shakes so special is singer Brittany Howard, who is essentially Tina Turner, Jack White and Janis Joplin wrapped up in one unassuming package. She could be the teller at your bank, your company’s IT person or your middle school art teacher, but when she opens her mouth, it’s clear that she was born to sing. The band’s sound bounces between soul and boogie-woogie, but genre isn’t their selling point as much as the songwriting and Howard’s expressive delivery.
t’s about time that somebody ripped off Donna Summer. Escort take all that we’ve learned from sprawlingly huge Canadian bands and put it in a disco context. The NYC-based group includes a string section, a horn section, a percussion section and the vibrant vocals of Adeline Michele. While they’re not doing anything new, the live instrumentation and the collective energy of the 15 members onstage make it impossible not to shake yo thang. Oh, and just so your bosses don’t think you’re up to something unsavory if they check your Internet search history, the band’s website is www.weareescort.com. In my previews leading up to SXSW, I wrote about J. Roddy Walston & the Business, Michael Kiwanuka, Cloud Nothings and Youth Lagoon. I’m proud to say that because of what I witnessed in Texas from these acts, I’m sticking to my guns — and I guarantee you’ll be hearing a lot more from all of them. PAT HEALY

Boss in Austin After delivering a speech that was essentially an answer key to his entire career, Bruce Springsteen took to the stage of the 2,700-capacity Moody Theatre for an intense set with the E Street Band that lasted nearly three hours. The set list was similar to his tour opening show at the Apollo earlier this month, but what truly made it special were the surprise guests that joined him onstage, including openers Alejandro Escovedo
and the Low Anthem, as well as Jimmy Cliff, Joe Ely, the Arcade Fire and perhaps most poignantly, Eric Burden of The Animals. During his keynote address, the Boss picked up an acoustic guitar and played a snippet of The Animals’ “We’ve Gotta Get Outta This Place” and confessed, “That’s every song I’ve ever written.” Through the magic of Twitter, Eric Burden’s fans let him know about this shout-out, and then conveyed to Springsteen that Burden in fact has been living in Austin, which spurred the gracious invitation.

WonderCon: What summer movies await us T he summer movie season is fast approaching, and with that in mind the big Hollywood studios headed to WonderCon — the little brother to July’s monster Comic-Con in San Diego — to show off some of their coming attractions. Here’s what we learned about some of the biggest films offering up teases this weekend:
‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Kristen Stewart is still a hit with convention audiences: “It was
fun. It was nice to arrive with someone like Kristen as a little secret,” says director Rupert Sanders, who surprised the
‘Prometheus’
It’s not a prequel, for real: While Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” has been hinted at as having connections to his classic “Alien,” Scott and writer Damon Lindelof explain that this is not, in fact, a prequel. “Normally that’s the definition of a prequel, is that it preceeds the other movies,” Lindelof says. “And there’s an inevitability to watching a prequel of going, ‘If the end of this movie is just going to be the room that John Hurt walks into that’s full of eggs, there’s nothing interesting in that.’”
WonderCon panel with an appearance by Stewart. “Outside of ‘Twilight’ — which everyone thinks she actually is Bella for some reason. She’s such a good actor and she encompassed that role so well that people think that’s how she is. And when you meet Kristen, she’s so far away from that character.” There will be blood: “It’s its own story. If there’s a desire for people to want to continue with those characters — I think there will be, they’re such great characters, they’re wellplayed,” Sanders say on the topic of a possible sequel to the fairy tale film. “A couple of people end up dead, so I’d have to fill those shoes.”

massage, the therapist kneels, crouches and sometimes stands over the patient. It concentrates more on joints than muscles, easing stagnation via stretching and acupressure. It starts with the feet and works the lower body more than the upper. The therapist manipulates the limbs, often adapting yoga poses. “That’s why it’s called lazy yoga,” says Mariana Spry, spa director at The Sports Club/LA in Boston. “It’s assisted yoga and a very different experience from Swedish, which concentrates on one aspect of the body. It’s extremely beneficial for myofascial [soft tissue] therapy, for treating pain and restriction of motion.” Lomilomi: If your travels will

In Hawaiian, lomilomi means “going to and from.” The massage is intense and specific, consisting of long, continuous strokes with no breaks in touch at all. “It’s very melodic and needs to be done precisely,” says Alex Sharpe, spa director at Vermont’s Topnotch Spa. “It’s most beneficial for people with chronic stress, but it’s also an energy session to send chi flowing though the body.” LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us

When Patrick Gray graduated from Boston College in 1999, he was determined to become a detail-oriented professional. He started with perhaps the most overlooked detail of contemporary office culture: typing. “It represented kind of bigger things to me. I thought, ‘It’s time to be a professional and learn to type for real,’” he explains. “I went cold turkey from two-finger typing. I thought, ‘Even if it takes me 10 minutes on an e-mail, I’m going to force myself to do it the right way.’” “I think these skills are going downhill in most offices. There’s less of this training at the high school and college level,” says Sally Mounts, president of Auctus Consulting Group. “It’s kind of ironic, because we’re all typing more than ever now, but we’re less cognizant of typing skills.” It took a full month of home-row discipline for Gray — now the president of Prevoyance Group, an IT company — to get his speed back up to where it was when he started: 20 words per minute. But after six months he was sailing

A boom in self-publishing has created a healthy business for freelance editors Author and freelancer Mary Embree on her new how-to book
INGRAM PUBLISHING
Disclosing a job offer Weighing a job offer presents plenty of hard questions: Is the compensation worth the risk? Is the position consistent with the path you want to be on? But there’s one immediate question that’s often overlooked: How much should you tell your boss? We asked the experts about the benefits of disclosing a job offer to your manager.
Yes: Share your situation Sally Mounts, president of Auctus Consulting Group, says that this decision really depends on your boss. If the relationship is a strong one, you should be able to expect support if not guidance. “If your boss is a mentor who has consistently helped you along your career path with advice, wisdom, good boundaries and encouragement, by all means, inform him or her of your plans,” she says. “Such individuals deserve honesty, because they have earned it and will probably still be willing to mentor you in your new position from afar.”
Embree’s new book is for natural grammar geeks.
By the 1980s, Mary Embree was feeling burnt out by her career in television production. Just a few years later, she remade herself into a full-time freelance editor. Embree got her break editing a friend’s book that was later picked up by Simon & Schuster. A chain reaction of references soon provided her with more work than she could have imagined. Her latest book, “Starting Your Career as a Freelance Editor: A Guide to Working With Authors, Books, Newsletters, Magazines, Websites, and More,” is an attempt to share her business philosophy with naturally gifted wordsmiths and persnickety proofreaders. “Some people are just really good with words; they’re naturally good with grammar. I believe they can learn to be editors,” she explains, from her home in Port Hueneme, Calif.
“I did not have a college education, but I learned through the years, as I was constantly being asked to do more editing in the jobs that I had.” Over the last 20 years, the booming self-publishing industry has created a cascade of
On her writing résumé Before starting her career as a freelance editor, Mary Embree worked in Hollywood as a production assistant for “Good Times,” “One Day At a Time” and “Three’s Company.” Her other books with Allworth Press include “The Author’s Toolkit” and “The Birds and Bees of Words: A Guide to the Most Common Errors in Usage, Spelling, and Grammar.”
projects for Embree. Her clients typically hire her to help them take the book from cradle to page, from discussing their initial ideas to suggesting broad structural changes to copyediting the manuscript according to the Chicago Manual of Style. “Starting Your Career” includes chapters on each step of that process, plus advice on promoting the business, record-keeping and establishing a framework for hourly rates. But, most importantly, the book provides plenty of wisdom on the core of any editing business: fostering good relationships with writers. “You need to be firm and honest with them at the same time. That isn’t always easy. You don’t want to insult them,” she explains. “It’s a very fine line there.” BRUCE WALSH
bruce.walsh@metro.us
STOCKBYTE
In an ideal office, your boss would be a part of the decision. “Great leaders, in both their style and their results, are always grooming their people for success,” says John P. Strelecky, author of “The Big Five for Life. “So if a person is working for a great leader, they can expect the leader to see the upside potential of helping someone move up.”
Sleeping and the job Many of us don’t get the magic number of eight hours of sleep a night. But some careers seem to lend themselves to less rest, according to a new survey by Sleepy’s mattress company based on data from the National Health Interview Survey.
Before you accept an offer, talk it over with some trusted mentors — but that might not include your boss.
No: Make an independent decision New York City-based recruiter Patricia Lenkov, votes no to discussing the offer. “There is nothing to be gained by telling your boss you are looking for a job,” she advises. “Your boss knows you are not committed and potential salary increases and promotions can
be withheld.” Yikes. Then there’s always the possibility that the offer falls through. “Even if nothing comes of the job search, it can change the relationship,” explains Kurt Weyerhauser, managing partner of executive search firm Kensington-Stone. “It can create doubt about one’s loyalty and [suggest] that a departure could be imminent any time.” JULIA WEST

Mark Carrieri, it was uneducated writers like you who based their opinions about Obama on Rush Limbaugh and his ilk that have provided America with the nonstop GOP freak show. In this country, anyone who is 50 percent black is black; where have you been since dropping out of third grade? Color isn’t like math, it is decided by subjective perception. Are you trying to hide raw racism behind the thin veil of Obama being also 50 percent white so the hostility would appear unrelated to his color? GEORGE MATHIOWITZ, VIA E-MAIL
As a Republican voter I would have been proud to have voted for Herman Cain or Condaleezza Rice if she was running. These are true black Americans — excuse me, African-Americans — who came from generations of black families with nothing and took advantage of the educational system in this country and became successful. I hope your paper has the courage to print this response as apparently it’s not popular
to speak the truth when it comes to President “The Second Coming” Obama. When do the simple facts about how the president’s actions and policies have been ineffective actually register? He came into office calling for $2 trillion to stimulate the economy and halt the unemployment rate. Well, huge failure! And that doesn’t add in the downgrading of our financial rating affecting our ability to borrow money and increasing the cost of servicing our current balling debt!

I advise John that those of us who view Christianity with a critical eye are also acutely aware of problems associated with various dogmas, and are not silent on these matters. Bruins need to bag Leafs before heading West Overworked Thomas will get short break before team embarks on West Coast swing Win over Philly was first sign of life in quite some time GETTY IMAGES
Ten games to go. The finish line is finally within reach for the Bruins, who now are fighting for their division lives after their two-month malaise. Three things to look for in a big Bruins week:

BUILD ON BIG WIN The Bruins came up with a rousing performance Saturday against the Flyers in what felt like a playoff game. The Bruins finally scored first, and raised their record to 32-0-0 when taking a 2-0 lead — even if they did need a dramatic shootout to secure the victory and regain a mathematical hold on first place in the Northeast Division. With the lowly Maple Leafs at the Garden tonight (7 p.m.,

Tim Thomas gets his last twoday break of the regular season Tuesday and Wednesday, but it will hardly be restful, as the
team will spend one of the days trudging to the West Coast for their final serious road trip of the season. Thomas looked much better Saturday.
BACK, BACK TO CALI With the NCAA tournament East regional being held in Boston this upcoming weekend, the Bruins have the joy of a three-game, four-day California trip, with San Jose on Thursday, Los Angeles on Saturday and Anaheim on Sunday. Oh, and the Sharks and Kings are playing for their playoff lives, so none of these games promise to be easy. JEFF GOLDBERG sports@metro.us

McD has got to be giddy DAVID DRAPKIN/GETTY IMAGES
Tom Brady and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will have a few new toys to play with in 2012.
The last time he was fully in charge of the Patriots offense, Josh McDaniels helped orchestrate the single greatest offensive season in NFL history. Receivers Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney and even Kelley Washington had quickly become “McDaniels guys” in 2007. This past weekend, the Patriots signed the ultimate “McDaniels guy” to a three-year, $12 million contract. After much speculation, Brandon Lloyd landed in New England. The 30-year-old Lloyd, who led the league in receiving yards with 1,448 in 2010, was the star pupil in McDaniels’ brief tenure in Denver. He fol-

It was a career high mark for the former Indianapolis Colt. lowed McDaniels to the Rams a year later via an in-season trade. It was never McDaniels’ offensive scheming that got him into trouble around the league. It was other things, notably demeanor. When then-Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley snubbed McDaniels in a postgame handshake in 2010, he reportedly told McDaniels, “There’s a lot of s— being talked about you.” Adding to the turmoil surrounding McDaniels that season was the situation in which

Denver video coordinator Steve Scarnecchia broke an “integrity of the game” policy by video taping part of a 49ers walkthrough. McDaniels never reported the incident and he was soon-after fired from the Broncos. So the former wonderkid never accomplished his goals in his first head coaching stint in Denver and had a mediocre season in St. Louis last year (the Rams finished 30th in the league in passing). By all accounts, 2012 should be McDaniels’ comeback season in the NFL. He deserves a shot at redemption in a league that eats its coaching young. Having Tom Brady once again will certainly do wonders. Having Lloyd back as his star pupil once again will undoubtedly give the former “next great head coach” another leg up.

The Cold, Hard Football Facts A look at the NFL offseason through the eyes of the stat experts at ColdHardFootballFacts.com: Wide Receiver crazy A look at three moves made this past week: Great: Moss to San Fran The 49ers did almost everything well last year except get the ball downfield. They were No. 20 in Real Passing Yards Per Attempt. Moss gives them a world-class downfield threat if he plays up to potential and San Fran landed him dirt cheap with no guaranteed money. Good: Wayne stays The rumor mill swirled that Peyton Manning was going to make his longtime batterymate part of any deal. Instead, Wayne re-signed with the Colts. Good news for future QB Andrew Luck, who is going to need some legit weapons. Bad: Vincent Jackson to Tampa Bay The Buccaneers signed the former Chargers receiver to a 5-year, $56 million deal. Sounds good on paper. But the team really needs to spend money on a defense that was dead last in the NFL in 2011 (494 PA).
