SEPTA, transit cops meet, but strike still on PHILADELPHIA. SEPTA and its transit police were back at the bargaining table Thursday night, but no agreement had been announced at press time. U.S. Rep. Bob Brady helped get the two sides together after officers went on strike Wednesday shortly before 2 p.m. The Fraternal Order of Transit Police, which represents 219 sworn officers, has been without a contract for a year. It claims the sticking point was $200,000 annually in certification pay for officers who complete regular training. During the strike, city police have patrolled the system. METRO RIKARD LARMA/METRO

Details of controversial merger released by NJ Rutgers-Camden would become part of Rowan in 14 months Rutgers-Camden chancellor rails against plan The official plan for merging Rutgers-Camden into Rowan University was issued Thursday. The combined school, which will also be affiliated with Cooper University Hospital and Coriell Institute for Medical Research, will be designated a research university and headquartered in Glassboro. The transition will take 14 months. The new Rowan University will have a common curriculum in place for the 2013-14 school year. Students enrolled at Rutgers-Camden prior to that can get a Rutgers diploma; students enrolling after that will get a Rowan diploma, regardless of which campus they attend. The common curriculum currently used at Rutgers-Camden will be phased out. Some services for Rutgers Camden, such as IT, the library and payroll, are cur-

The blending of student services, such as advising and financial aid, will also occur during the transition. A committee will work separately on issues involving the student body, including athletic programs. One of the main reasons for the merger is to improve the combined schools’ ability to attract research funding. The two campuses currently have about $26 million in grants; the plan projects doubling that to at least $50 million by 2020. Endowments and grant funding that have already been given to either campus will stay with that campus. JUDY WEIGHTMAN letters@metro.us

All of Rutgers-Camden’s property, assets and state funding will be transferred to Rowan. Rowan’s board of trustees will expand from 15 members to 25 to include Rutgers representation. The current combined enrollment is 20,000. The plan projects growing the student body to a total of 25,000 (20,00 undergrad and 5,000 grad and professional) by the year 2020. The plan calls for the combined university to take an increasingly active role in the revitalization of both Camden and Glassboro.

Since Channel 64 began airing Philadelphia’s 100 most wanted, 21 of them have been arrested, he said. The police’s telephone and e-mail tip lines have received over 700 tips since Jan. 26, the date the mayor announced the plan and the Department’s text tip line will become operational in April.

A Glassboro, N.J., man has been held for trial on all charges in an attack on two New York Rangers fans in South Philadelphia following the NHL Winter Classic. The melee, which happened Jan. 2 outside Geno’s Steaks on Passyunk Avenue, was captured on a cell phone camera and posted on YouTube. Prosecutors claim Dennis Veteri, 32, was among a group of rowdy Flyers fans who picked a fight with two Rangers fans and then brutally assaulted them. Michael Janocko testified that he and friend Neal Aurrichio were waiting in line at Geno’s when they were sprayed with a cleaning substance by someone. When they looked in the direction of the person who sprayed them they saw a group of men, which allegedly included Veteri, wearing Flyers jerseys and laughing. Fletcher Wortmann hates catching a "Monk" rerun even more than you do. But it's not the show's awkward, sporadic comedy that bothers him — at least not primarily. Rather, it's the tidy portrayal of the detective’s Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as an asset on the job — as a quirky, concise tool — that touches an already overworked nerve. “The hand-washing and the counting and the organizing are the most physical symptoms of the disorder, and they’re the ones that people latch onto,” says Wortmann of depictions of OCD in popular culture. “People will say, ‘Oh you must be really good at editing or organizing.’ But the OCD bogs you down and confuses you, frustrates you. There is a terrible agony in it.” In his surprisingly funny, and at times uncomfortably honest, new memoir, “Triggered,” Wortmann documents

his lifelong struggles with the disorder, which was finally diagnosed when he was a student at Swarthmore College. While there is plenty of the telltale hand-washing and organizing, it is clear that Wortmann’s compulsive rituals are not only highly personal and complex, but debilitating at worst — and devastating on a more regular basis, especially for a teenager with a Catholic guilt complex. Now pursuing an MFA in creative writing at Temple University, Wortmann, 25, expects to be in treatment for the rest of his life for a disease he doesn't necessarily understand but is learning to live with — and even laugh with. “Sometimes, humor is the only way to look at it and understand it,” he says. “There is a level of absurdity to it.” MONICA WEYMOUTH

n February 2010, two years after the election of President Barack Obama and two years into the recession-inducing financial collapse, a billboard appeared in Wyoming, Minn.: a huge photo of former president George W. Bush asking, “Miss Me Yet?” At that point, most U.S. citizens, Republicans included, were not ready to admit any hint of nostalgia for the presidency that oversaw 9/11, started two deficitbusting wars in the Middle East, tanked the nation’s finances with massive tax cuts for the rich, preached deregulation on Wall Street and made torture sound like a day at the beach. In 2008, as candidates scrambled to distance themselves from the toxic legacy, W. was a nonentity and “Bush” was reduced to a four-letter word. Now that veneer of shame has begun to creep away. On Wednesday, Mitt Romney invoked the great decider in the grand GOP game of spinning bad news as Obamarelated and good news as meaningless coincidence. “I

keep hearing the president say that he’s responsible for keeping America from going into a Great Depression,” Romney said. “No, no, no. That was President George W. Bush.” Romney here refers to the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the poorly negotiated federal bailout program that attempted to avert a more severe recession through billions in government giveaways to the financial sector. (Apparently the federal government can spend taxpayer money to restore the economy only under a Republican presidency.) Of course, Romney pointedly ignores the suc-

cessful auto bailouts, which he strongly opposed, and other stimulus measures that injected much-need dollars into the U.S. economy to save millions of jobs. Clearly, some memories are more readily recalled than others.

T

hen there’s the matter of Karl Rove, whom Bush credited as “the architect” of his 2004 election, the brains behind the old “Mission Accomplished” ruse. This man, who could teach a washing machine a thing or two about spin and who is pulling the strings of American Crossroads — the super PAC “100 percent dedicated to rescuing our economy from the Obama agenda” — is trying to pass himself off as an objective journalist. In a Wall Street Journal oped Wednesday, Rove set out to dispute the claims of a new Obama re-election video, questioning everything from the fact that the president faced a serious economic crisis to the very existence of cause-andeffect itself. Rove dedicates his space in the Murdoch-owned paper to downplaying any Obama successes and propping up the Bush regime. But then, what else do you expect from these masters of lies? Romney and Rove want us to forget all about what came before so they can mold the future in their own distorted image. So tell us, readers: Do we miss Bush yet? Are we ready for another dose? Are we ready to forget?

Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards fired back Thursday at a news site that reported he was a client of a New York City prostitution ring allegedly run by Anna Gristina. IN THE BACKSEAT OF HER CAR

“If ‘The Hunger Games’ were real I would definitely be the first person killed. Immediately followed by Fiona Apple and Jojo.

Jennifer Lawrence, as Katniss Everdeen, stands among the children to be selected in a lottery for the Hunger Games, a televised battle to the death in a dystopic United States.

“T

he Hunger Games” has changed Jennifer Lawrence’s life in at least one way: She’s armed now. “I mean, I still have arrows in my car,” Lawrence admits. (Her character in the film, Katniss Everdeen, is a talented bow-hunter, so Lawrence has had to master archery.) “I didn’t realize that until two of my friends were getting into the backseat of my car and they were like, ‘Why do you have spears back here?’ In case I get pulled over!” Lawrence made such an impression in the critically acclaimed “Winter’s Bone” — as a hard-luck teen who must provide for her impoverished fami-

ly — that producers of “The Hunger Games” immediately thought of her for Katniss, a hard-luck teen who must provide for her impoverished family. “White trash with too much responsibility,” Lawrence says, comparing the characters, a mischievous grin on her face. “My publicist doesn’t like it when I say that.” Lawrence had hesitations about taking the role — and was even close to turning it down outright. “It was so big. I love my life, and there’s not a lot of times in a person’s life where a yes or no decision can change your life forever and it will never, no matter what, go back to the way it was before.

new ‘Twilight’?

“I kind of feel like an idiot because I haven’t even thought about it,” she says. “Everybody is like, ‘The movie is coming out!’ And I’m like, ‘Yup.’ I’m going to look back at myself five years from now and be like, ‘You were an idiot. You had no idea what was about to happen.’ I just feel this calm because there is nothing I can do. It’s kind of like when you say something and that quote is being written — it’s kind of like you immediately go into this calm of like, ‘Well, there is nothing I can do now!’”

It’s no secret that many are looking to “The Hunger Games” as the new young adult mega-franchise, what with “Twilight” tying up its prolonged victory lap later this year. And parallels have already been drawn between Lawrence and “Twilight” lead Kristen Stewart, an indie actress whose life was transformed by her sudden blockbuster success. But Lawrence is surprisingly immune to the hype that’s

And that was terrifying to me,” she admits. “Even from a professional standpoint, I wanted to continue to make small passion projects that I love, and I still want people to be able to lose themselves in my characters. I don’t want people to watch something and go, ‘Oh yeah, look at what Katniss is doing. Oh, Katniss is wearing a dress.’ I didn’t want that, but I realized that all of the no’s just had to do with me being scared. I didn’t want to miss out on something just because I was scared.” NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

LIONSGATE PUBLICITY

Is Liam Hemsworth’s Gale an Edward or a Jacob? Too soon to tell.

The trilogy is on! While excitement builds for “The Hunger Games,” fans know it’s just the beginning of a trilogy, followed by “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay.” Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy — the man behind “Slumdog Millionaire” — is already hard at work on the script for “Catching Fire” under the guidance of author Suzanne Collins. “‘The Hunger Games’ fan base [is] passion-

ate beyond anything I’ve ever come across,” Beaufoy says, “and I would fear for my life [if I get it wrong]. If I do too free an adaptation of that, I shall get firebombed.” Liam Hemsworth, who plays Katniss’ homebound pal Gale, is just excited for more screen time. “If we get to shoot the other ones, I will be very happy. My character does grow a lot more in the other ones,” he says. “I would be very excited to shoot the third book. There’s a big uprising in that one and rebellions. There’s a lot of fun stuff.”

V. Arrow’s detailed depiction of Panem is based on the phi spiral.

‘HUNGER GAMES’

T

he world of Panem has captivated “The Hunger Games” fans. Now, thanks to a dedicated writer-turned-cartographer, readers can visualize what the fictional region looks like. The meticulously researched map was created by a previously published fiction writer who goes by the pen name V. Arrow.

How she placed the districts

WWW.METROINSPACE.COM The winner will be revealed in the special Space Edition on April 12, 2012.

Arrow took clues from the book — North America was said to be destroyed by a cataclysmic event; District 12 is said to have once been Appalachia. She used a phi spiral — a logarithmic shape that gets wider by every quarter turn — to place the evil Capitol in the center. The rest was just guesswork.

Quoted

“I was interested in how different the story was from the [typical] unification of a country.” ARROW

The whole project took V. Arrow and her friend about four and a half days combined to research and six to seven hours to draw out. But she’s been tinkering with details over the last six months to make it more scientifically accurate.

This isn’t her first world map Arrow also completed one detailing the world of “Matched” by Ally Condie. But the Panem map will always hold a special place. She was especially proud that the A.V. Club wrote about her efforts, even though they did mention she might be a bit crazy. “I consider it a nerd badge of honor to be called a ‘fruit loop.’”

Behind the art V. Arrow considered doing a map of the clock arena from “Catching Fire,” but thought it wouldn’t be a big challenge. In her upcoming book “The Panem Companion,” Arrow details the sociological and psychological implications of Panem. METRO

Most incredible nature scenes filmed for ‘Frozen Planet’

Elizabeth White, one of the directors behind the new series documenting life at the polar regions, shares her ‘holy grail’ moments caught while cameras were rolling

1

First complete filming of a killer whale “wave wash,” in which hunting orcas create giant waves to wash seals off ice floes

“We had tantalizing reports of this behavior from observers on cruise ships, the diaries of the early explorers and also a shaky tourist video,” says White, whose crew went to the Antarctic to capture its own footage of this phenomenon, said to be the most complex team hunt in the whole of the

animal kingdom. “Among large ice floes peppered with sunbathing seals, the crew saw some tall dorsal fins and killer whales coming vertically out of the water to have a look around. Remarkably, right in front their eyes, a pod of killer whales prospected an ice floe, turned and generated a wave which washed over a nearby floe. What they revealed to the scientists was a number of things — that killer whales

have a real preference for Weddell seals, not crabeaters (as had previously been proposed), that they use different techniques to break up floes of different sizes and that different pods behave differently — some are bold and fearless and others more cautious.”

2

Footage of the brinicle, an underwater ice stalactite that plunges toward the seabed and kills everything it touches

Camera crews went to great lengths to capture never-before-seen footage of the landscape and wildlife in Antarctica for “Frozen Planet,” narrated by Alec Baldwin. The series airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Discovery Channel.

“This was an unexpected discovery for the ‘Frozen Planet’ team,” admits White. “Relatively few people have dived in Antarctica, and there is still much to learn about the marine life there. [The crew was] aware of these bizarre ice chandeliers — brine icicles — hanging from the sea ice above, but it was only when filming something else that they accidently witnessed one forming. This was an amazing opportunity to

use time-lapse techniques to really show what happens when these bizarre formations grow. This phenomenon had never been filmed before.”

3

Aerial footage of Antarctica retracing the steps of early explorers Robert F. Scott and Roald Amundsen

“We were aware that ‘Frozen Planet’ would be airing exactly 100 years after the tragic story of Scott and his team, as they

battled to be the first men to stand at the geographical South Pole. Retracing their epic journey — across the trans-Antarctic mountains, mighty Beardmore Glacier and up onto the vast polar plateau — felt a very symbolic journey to make, even if done using helicopters and planes, rather than by foot.” AMBER RAY

Dr. Dog are, from left, Dimitri Manos, Frank McElroy, Scott McMicken, Zach Miller, Toby Leaman and Eric Slick.

There are at least two songs in the rock canon that name check Lake Charles, La.: Lucinda Williams’ “Lake Charles” and The Band’s “Cripple Creek.” Dr. Dog singer Scott McMicken ponders that lake on a sunny, late winter’s day, while struck by its beauty. Does he feel a song coming on? “I don’t think I’ve earned the right to write a song about it,” he tells Metro humbly. “Maybe one day.” While you’d think the Philadelphia-based retro pop-rockers to be Yankees through and through, McMicken says he has an affinity for the South. “I love the general air down here. It’s one of our best areas for touring.” Growing up in rural Pennsylvania not far from the Delaware border puts him in a North/South gray area, but he

says his heart now belongs to Philly, even though the band has experienced the city’s worst aspects. Their studio, for instance, is called Meth Beach for a reason. “It’s in a troubled part of Philly,” says McMicken of their Kensington studio. “When we moved into our studio, there had been a meth lab across the street. It exploded and set fire to the building. For some reason, there was a busted old boat nearby. There are beautiful sunsets and seagulls from the Delaware River; it felt like a beach.”

No ‘Shame’ In between Dr. Dog’s 2010 album “Shame, Shame” and their February-released “Be The Void,” the quintet expanded to a six-piece, adding multi-instrumentalist Dimitri Manos and swapping in new drummer Eric Slick. “We had a lot of time playing together on tour before we made ‘The Void.’ We really settled in together,” says McMicken. “Those guys went from stepping in to replicate what we did on ‘Shame’ to developing the music.”

In the early ’70s, a Spanish flamenco dancer performed a small demonstration in Elba Hevia y Vaca’s Bolivian village. The experience would shape the next 40 years of her life. “What awakened in me was the emotions that flamenco allows you to express,” explains Hevia y Vaca. “As a 13-year-old girl, I was extremely ecstatic to discover that there were movements my body could make to express things I was feeling.” But as she delved further in-

to her study, she became increasingly dismayed by the typical presentation of women in the art form. In Hevia y Vaca’s view, the dictatorship of Francisco Franco instilled a repressive, misogynistic undertone to Spain’s national dance — one that persists to this day. In 2000, she finally founded her own flamenco ensemble, Pasion y Arte, and she made sure it had a distinctly feminist bent. “I wanted to push the

boundaries — to experience flamenco as a woman, not as a loved-other, or a sexual object. The only way I could do that was to form my own company,” she explains. This week marks the opening of the first Philadelphia Flamenco Festival, produced by Pasion y Arte. Running until the end of the month, the celebration features performances and master classes by renowned Spanish dancer Rosario Toledo at Temple University, Swarthmore College and Christ Church Neighborhood House. “In Spain, there are so many wonderful dancers changing the aesthetic and empowering women,” says Hevia y Vaca. “Philadelphia hasn’t had the opportunity to see that.” BRUCE WALSH

‘Surprises,’ ‘lust’ and ‘envy’ also describe Season 5, say the series’ creator and cast Of course, that describes any season of this sophisticated period drama

“Every season seems to be about how we deal with change,” admits Weiner, who wrote Sunday’s two-hour premiere. “That’s part of why I picked that period [for the show’s setting], but it’s also why I tell you how old everybody is in the show. I say the ages of the characters specifically and you can start identifying with them. They are growing.” Change:

What will happen W when ‘Mad Men’ returns? In one word: ‘Change’

hen we sat down with “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner and stars Jon Hamm and John Slattery leading up to Sunday night’s Season 5 premiere, we knew specific storylines were off-limits conversation with this plotguarding group. So to gain insight into what our favorite cigarette-smoking, martini-swilling advertising executives of the 1960s are up to, we asked for the best words that describe the new episodes. The “Men” break down the Top 5.

FRANK OCKENFELS/AMC

Style interview

Costume designer Janie Bryant

From left: Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks), Roger Sterling (John Slattery), Lane Pryce (Jared Harris), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), Don Draper (Jon Hamm), Bertram Cooper (Robert Morse) and Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) are “Mad Men.” Season 5 premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

2

Surprises: The “Mad Men” characters surprise viewers on a regular basis — secretive ad man Don Draper in particular, who impulsively proposed to his secretary in last season’s finale. And while the dapper Don even catches the actor who portrays him off-guard sometimes, Hamm says the man in the impeccably tailored suit never surprises himself. “He’s a creative guy,” says Hamm. “He’s an interesting guy. But I think he is very aware of who is he, even for a guy who is ostensibly somebody else. I think it’s a big part of what his central darkness is all about. He knows himself too well — and he’s not a fan.”

3

Lust and envy: “Those are

two words you can use to describe every season,” says

Slattery, who plays longtime agency partner and ladies’ man Roger Sterling. “It’s a competitive place filled with dissatisfied people.”

4

Happy and content: “Don’s surprisingly content,” Hamm says of his character’s headspace when Season 5 opens. “As much as that can be a good thing, I think that sometimes it’s not. He’s aspiring to be happy and content. ... [But] what happens when you get what you want?” Don’s definitions of “happy” and “content” have never lined up with the typical American dream. Their meaning “is changeable for him,” Hamm says. “That’s the problem with Don — he thinks he wants one thing, and maybe he was wrong.”

5

Success: Weiner reiterates

that “change is happening very rapidly,” not just on “Mad Men,” but in 2012, too. “The country has had a huge blow to its self-esteem,” he says, drawing parallels to the wars and revolutions of both eras. “Success will come,” he says, “and we may not even be able to recognize it.” He’s talking about success both in his characters’ — and viewers’ — professional and personal lives. “Success is such a product of expectation,” he says. “When you set the goal, you can get the goal. But even the delay of getting the goal can take away the feelings of success.” AMBER RAY

amber.ray@metro.us

The new season of “Mad Men” has been shrouded in CIA-like secrecy. As the premiere date draws closer, we try our best to extract a few clues about what to expect from costume designer Janie Bryant.

Banana Republic’s new “Mad Men” collection is in stores now.

Now that we’re just days away from the season premiere and the cast photos have been released, what can you reveal about the look of the characters? How has their wardrobe evolved since last season? Honestly, I’m sworn to secrecy until the premiere on March 25. You’ll have to wait and see! Okay, how does the new “Mad Men” collection for Banana Republic reflect the look of Season 5? Our second collection was inspired by the characters while

at the club, because of the fun contrast to the home and office settings. It’s about an era of lounging poolside or attending a Fourth of July barbecue in a crisp blue polo shirt and stunning the crowd in a lush ivory dress. Were you obligated to design it in such a way that wouldn’t give away too many details about the actual show? For this collection, [Banana Republic creative director Simon Kneen] and I talked a lot about the characters and scenes that inspired us, the roles they were playing [and] the emotions

they’re going through, and [we] worked to translate all that context into beautiful design. We stayed with the traditional “Mad Men” look that viewers have come to love. The new collection manages to feel both vintage and very 2012. It was about taking a vintage look and updating it with a modern twist. We took some of our favorite trending colors and prints, like the bright pinks and large florals in some of the women’s pieces, and fit them on a ’60s silhouette, like a capri pant or nip-waist dress. The first four seasons of “Mad Men” helped spark a global obsession with the midcentury way of dressing, influencing an entire season of ready-to-wear collections. Do you think Season 5 will do the same thing for late ’60s dressing? People identify with the costume design of the characters and there has already been a clear resurgence of 1960s trends on runways this spring. Beautiful, dressed-up tailoring with emphasis on the waist, bright colors for ladies and tailored, slim-cut apparel for men are all making a comeback. KENYA HUNT

By the time you get home from work you’re starving, tired and ready to pop a frozen burrito in the micro. (Or, even better yet, order pizza!) But there’s still hope for home-prepared meals in your future. U.K. culinary star Sophie Wright — the youngest head chef in England at age 20 — insists making dinner doesn’t have to be time- or labor-intensive. “You just need to be well organized, says Wright. “You need to have an idea [of a recipe] in the back of your head. Maybe flick through a cookbook the night before. Then, rather than stopping for a slice of pizza on the way home, stop at the supermarket and pick up a few bits and make a really nice meal. If this sounds like a case of easier-said-than-done, Wright shows us how in her new book, “Home at 7, Dinner at 8, which is filled with 80 easy, fancy-sounding recipes, such as Honey Roasted Pork Tenderloin and Red Wine, Gorgonzola and Orange Risotto that can be in

Houston cause of death: Accidental drowning

Kardashian opens up about her divorce Kim Kardashian opened up to Jay Leno about her quickie marriage to Kris Humphries on

Wednesday night. It was a lot of what you’d expect: It was nobody’s fault, “she still believes in love,” blah, blah, blah. Basically, Kardashian did a great job of making a divorce sound as un-juicy as possible (which is very hard to do). “I’m a girl who really believes in love, I’m in love with love and I thought this was it for me,” she told Leno, never referring to Humphries by

I’m Madonna a freedom

name, only as “someone else.” The 31-year-old said that when she “realized [the marriage] wasn’t [what] I thought,” she “tried to be really respectful of everyone involved.” “I’ve heard stories of people who were married for 10 years and they knew it wasn’t right, but they wanted to stick it out and had kids,” she said. “I want that forever. I believed in love, I still do. But to be fair to everyone, I knew I had to end it, and I’m OK with that decision.”

In their official cause of death report, released yesterday, the L.A. County coroner concludes that Whitney Houston died from accidental drowning but that heart disease and cocaine use were also factors when she died on Feb. 11. The report also states that at the time of death, the singer had cocaine in her system, although investigators found no evidence of cocaine in her room. TMZ.com states that a source “close to the investigation” says that it’s still “very possible” that Houston had a heart attack that caused her to lose consciousness and drown.

NFL star Tim Tebow, who was traded to the New York Jets this week, apparently has things besides football on his mind. Tebow reportedly has his eye on “Glee” star Dianna Agron, despite the actress’ ongoing relationship with “Captain America” sidekick Sebastian Stan, according to Fox News. “Tim has made no secret that he likes Dianna, and told her so, but she has remained faithful to Sebastian,” a source says. A rumored split between the couple may be just the opening Tebow needs, even if Agron’s rep says reports of a breakup with Stan are “not true.”

Black-and-white worldview falls flat RE: “TWO-STATE SOLUTION FOR LEFT AND RIGHT”: Mr. Tordoff

has some rudimentary mistakes in his estimation of the supposed class war. Liberals are against the reprehensible way that sycophants with no remorse rape the planet, start religious and economic wars for their own gain, and a host of other crimes against humanity. Academics are smart enough to understand fundamental truths like climate change and evolution and that everyone will not be rich. It is not education, it is the application of that thought process. BRIAN GRAU, VIA E-MAIL How easy it must be for Mr. Tordoff to live in such a black and white world of brave heroes and cowardly intellectu-

als, and no shades of gray. If only we lived in that world: The right would quickly become a plutocratic theocracy that teaches myths instead of facts in science class, where corporations run roughshod over the environment and labor, and the poor and elderly are left to die in the streets. Meanwhile, the left would have all the doctors, economists, and the technical innovators that drive our economy. PATRICK COLE, VIA E-MAIL Mr. Tordoff’s rant regurgitates many strawmen rightwingers use to misportray the left. A majority of us are not for “equality of outcome” but “equality of opportunity.” We support a strong social safety net, which is not equivalent to or inclusive of punishing success and rewarding dependency. Labeling us as

meddling, daft academics is more Limbaugh-esque characterization. I would advise people like Joshua to engage themselves in more than just conservative media and actually develop their own opinions of liberals instead of embracing the boogiemen created by conservative outlets. Joshua Tordoff’s diatribe spews the typical (false) rightwing stereotypes. There are capable managers and war heroes on both sides of the political spectrum. Warren Buffet, Larry Page, David Geffen, Barry Gordy, Steve Jobs, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Bill Gates would go to the left of Tordoff’s divide. They have managed more than a “church bake sale.” Liberals Dan Inouye, Bob Kerrey, George McGovern, Harry Tru-

Aries March 21-April 19. Strong determination and fierce boldness make you a force to be reckoned with. Apply this strength to a specific objective and there will be no doubt about achieving success. Taurus April 20-May 20. In your own unpretentious but bold way, you’ll get far more done than those who strut and boast about their big intentions. Tenacity is your secret strength. Gemini May 21-June 20. One of your best means for achieving success is your ability to see positive elements in all situations, regardless of the negatives involved. You’re likely to put this quality to good use. Cancer June 21-July 22. In order to accomplish your aims, you’ll need to be far more assertive than usual. Fortunately, you’ll instinctively know how much pressure to apply without looking pushy. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. You’re likely to have exceptionally strong opinions, and you won’t be bashful about expressing them either. Woe betide those who try to oppose your views. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Although you’re in an excellent cycle as regards earning capacity, it won’t be so when it comes to handling your funds. Take care not to spend everything all at once.

Brunch notes

Supper makes a comeback Nestled on the fringe of Penn’s campus, City Tap House is known for its extensive beer list, which offers 60-plus seasonally rotated taps. But ever since the introduction of its “Daily Supper” series this past winter, patrons have scooted from barstools to dining tables, enjoying a range of themed specials every Monday through Saturday. From “Southern Cooking” and “Game Night” to “Homesick Texans” and “On the Hook,” each week’s menu boasts the flavor and familiarity of regional ingredients and down-home traditions. We asked executive chef Ralph Kane about the reintroduction of supper-style meals to the dinner dining scene. In what way does the idea of supper differ from dinner?

It is considered a gathering of family and friends. Sim-

Tashan

Sundays, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. www.mytashan.com Good news, brunch bunch: The stillsparkling Tashan just introduced their brunch menu, and they packed it full of coconut anise pancakes, warm daliya oatmeal and Mangalorean sausages. And yes — those impossibly fluffy masala donuts made the cut, and we’re going to say it’s fine to drink the cardamom syrup.

Russet

Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m.-2p.m. 1521 Spruce St. www.russetphilly.com Also new to the brunch game is Center City BYOB Russet. Like its dinner menu, the focus is seasonal and local with dishes such as duck and bacon pate, scallop and shrimp crepes and cheesy grits.

ply put, we prefer to think of our guest as such — coming into our home for a comforting supper, rather than a dinner. How does the nostalgia associated with homecooked, family-style meals translate when you’re dining out?

We use familiar ingredients with familiar dishes, expressing ourselves with a playful twist. I enjoy showcasing that we can and will produce comfort foods that our guest’s grandmother might have enjoyed cooking, while also taking pride in the fact that I can change it up to fit a gastropub setting. What’s your personal favorite Daily Supper?

It’s too difficult for me to decide which is my favorite Daily Supper — that’s like asking which niece or nephew is my favorite. They all hold a special place in my heart. TIFFANY KANG

nderdogs, a new hot dog and sausage spot in Center City, has a militant logo: a clenched red fist gripping a hot dog. So it’s not surprising that owner Robert Amar has a manifesto. “Nobody else is doing it, so let’s feed ourselves,” says Amar, a local restaurant vet who has worked at Buddakan and Fare. “For 25 years I’ve observed how restaurants focus on creating the perfect $30 entree while most of the staff, and most other people, can’t afford a meal over $10. This is wrong. Why work so hard to feed such a small group of people? Underdogs is about us feeding ourselves.” In addition to Amar’s working-class mission, Underdogs is an effort to reconnect with the city’s forgotten hot dog history. “This town was known for dogs long before cheesesteaks,” he says, “and it’s a shame that this

classic Philadelphia food has largely disappeared.” The “American Classics” section of the menu offers 12 cityspecific dogs and sausages (Chicago, New York and Warsaw are represented), including a traditional Philly dog with fishcake, mustard and chopped onions called The Back In The

Day. The “Haute Dogs” section gets a bit more avant-garde, where options like the My Thai dog with spicy peanut sauce and green papaya slaw are designed to challenge people’s expectations.

Breaking down Sweet Sixteen Blue Bloods highlight NCAA tourney Kentucky in driver’s seat UNC in trouble? Tune in Friday The NCAA tournament continues this weekend in what can best be described as Blue Blood Friday. North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana and Kansas bring a total of 20 national championships to the Sweet Sixteen. The Wildcats are the odds-on favorites to win it all, according to multiple sports books. The main storyline will be the health of North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall. He fractured his right wrist last week, but his cast was removed. His status is uncertain. “What we’re going to do is just practice every day, and if something weird happens that they say he can play, I’m probably going to let the guy play. But I just do not foresee that happening,” UNC coach Roy Williams told ESPN. With that mind, let’s break down Friday’s games:

Baylor (29-7) vs. Xavier (23-12) Friday, 7:15 p.m.

Baylor might be the only team that can push Kentucky out of the blue blood party. The Bears are led by NBA prospects Perry Jones and Quincy Miller, but it might be the silky smooth shooting of Brady Heslip that gets them to New Orleans. Xavier will pin all their hopes on all-world point guard Tu Holloway. Pick: Baylor 66, Xavier 55

At one point, Kansas coach Bill Self was heard screaming, “You told me you were ready!” They better be ready because NC State is enjoying their first trip to the Dance in six years. The key matchup to watch will be Kansas’ Thomas Robinson vs. State’s C.J. Leslie. Pick: Kansas 60, NC State 58

All eyes will be on Kendall Marshall’s right wrist. If he can’t go, look for Stilman White and Justin Watts to split the minutes. Ohio has been a nice Cinderella story, but they just don’t have the firepower to keep up with the Heels, even without Marshall. Pick: UNC 74, Ohio 60

Three players to watch DJ Cooper G, Ohio This isn’t Cooper’s first dance. The 5-foot-11 guard helped the Bobcats take down No. 3 Georgetown in 2010 when he poured in 23 points. Two years later, the junior is averaging 20 points per contest in two upset wins over No. 4 Michigan and No. 12 South Florida. Look for him to take advantage of a Kendall Marshall-less North Carolina squad.

Christian Watford F, Indiana He’s the one who hit “The Shot II” — as some in Hoosier land call his buzzer-beating trey to beat Kentucky — and he’ll be sure to be on the minds of the Wildcats. In fact, ESPN has been running a promo commercial featuring Watford’s game-winner on loop this past week. “It goes in
