State police officials found the body of missing Boston College student Franco Garcia in the Chestnut Hill reservoir.

Close to 100 people attended a vigil at a Waltham church last night after a body believed to be that of Boston College student Franco Garcia was pulled from the Chestnut Hill Reservoir yesterday morning. Feds deport Somerville man wanted for murder

He was arrested in February 2011 in Danvers after police received a tip that he was living in the Boston area. “The delay in his deportation was due to the numerous appeals that Ferreira de Souza had made before the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the Board of Immigration Appeals,” federal officials said in a statement. His final appeal was dismissed Feb. 17. Ferreira de Souza allegedly participated in the 2008 robbing and killing of a 68-yearold taxi driver. Leaders take on pay gap At 80 cents on the dollar, Mass. worse than US average for women’s earnings compared to men’s Legislators pressing bill on equal pay Equal Pay Day next week While women legislators held an Equal Pay Day event at the State House yesterday, the national Equal Pay Day is slated for Tuesday. The date of the event, April 17, symbolizes how far into 2012 women must work to earn what men earned in 2011, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity. Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most minority women, according to the committee. METRO

As the Bay State continues to lag behind the national average for equal women’s earnings, a group of female state legislators is pressing a bill concerning equalizing pay for women in comparable jobs as men. “I don’t think that there is any single issue more important to women than this because this is where the rubber hits the road … in terms of women being equal to men,” said state Rep. Cory Atkins. Atkins spoke during an Equal Pay Day event at the State House yesterday. Equal Pay Day is a national day organized by the National Committee on Pay Equity to bring attention to the wage gap between men and women. Women in Massachusetts earn about 80 percent of what their male counterparts make, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The nation-

“Our gap is unusual, because we have the talent and demonstrated experience to close this gap.” BUDSON al average is about 81 percent. The gap in Massachusetts is unique, said Victoria Budson, the founding executive director of the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, due to the state’s unique education levels. “There’s no other state where women are as educated as in Massachusetts,” she said. Jacqueline Cooke of the Women’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor said the

agency is trying to push young women to take or look for jobs in nontraditional fields such as science, math or green technology. “One reason women are paid less is that they work in jobs that are traditionally considered women’s jobs,” Cooke said. While progress has been made to balance the pay between men and women doing the exact same job, work still needs to be done on pay equity for comparable jobs, legislators said. A bill meant to define comparable work for employers is headed to the state Senate Ways and Means Committee. “It’s a very minor step, but it’s a step toward achieving equality,” said state Sen. Patricia Jehlen of Somerville. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Zimmerman is arrested, charged in Martin death GETTY IMAGES

A special prosecutor in Florida charged neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman with second-degree murder yesterday in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin — a move that protesters had been demanding for weeks in the racially charged case. Zimmerman was under arrest at an undisclosed location in Florida, officials said. Special prosecutor Angela Corey’s decision came 45 days after the fatal shooting in a quiet gated community in the central Florida town of Sanford. Police had declined to arrest Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, based on his account of self-defense, setting off civil rights demonstrations around the country. “I can tell you we did not

Reality rescores ‘Obamacare’

ust out the noise-makers, America, because we did it! Against all odds, under an ineffective executive and a deadlocked legislature, we’ve somehow managed to completely snuff out the troublesome U.S. deficit. Our long national nightmare is over! Oh, you didn’t hear this? You may actually have but just don’t fully realize it. That’s partly because the issue is quite

wonkish and difficult to succinctly explain, and partly because of the pervasive journalistic problem of false equivalency. We’re going to do our best to break down these issues. This Tuesday, a report by Republican politician Charles Blahous made the rounds, inspiring another round of spin. The media response was unsurprising; even we ran an article yesterday asking, “‘Obamacare’ could worsen US debt?” Blahous had rechecked the costs of health care reform and found them to be off by some $340 billion. To do this, however, he had to break from the traditional methods both parties use to score all legislation. It all comes down to trust funds, and here’s where things get hairy. Medicare funds, like those of other entitlement programs, are distributed via trust fund. This system, generally disliked by conservatives, applies a sort of guaranteed security to these programs, making

it difficult for politicians to cut them.

W

“Hello, world? Yeah, it’s me, Charles Blahous. Can we change objective reality as we know it? Cool, thanks.”

iLASIK

hen these trust funds run out politicians simply refill them, because entitlement programs are very popular with voters. These funds are, after all, paid by government bonds. This is why the Congressional Budget Office estimate of the law’s costs assumed that Medicare payments would continue even after the fund empties. Blahous takes issue with this established method and so pretends it doesn’t exist. But it does, of course, and will most likely continue to do so. Turns out an interesting thing happens when you ignore our arcane budget realities: The real problems disappear. Using the Blahous logic, we needn’t worry about rising entitlement costs at all; these programs will, you see, stop

paying out as soon as their funds empty. Problem solved! If only. “If we did things that way,” says Medicare expert Paul Van de Water, “a lot of stuff would look different.” But we don’t, and it doesn’t. Do you follow? If so, congratulations. The finer points of budget law are too difficult for most journalists — let alone the average consumer — to understand. Which brings us to the problem of equivalency. Since issues like these can be too nuanced for laymen to fully grasp (we spent six hours researching and still feel out of depth), many reporters revert to “he said this, she said that” rather than qualifying the factual accuracy of individual claims. This allows journalists to ignore the small matter of whether their sources are lying. In more ways than one, Blahous teaches us what we gain from ignoring reality.

Readers respond: A little background on J.Lo’s ‘gift’ PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

The feed ... Checking in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer. He can’t wait until he’s old enough to drive it. @jimmykimmel: Scientists have discovered that time moves slowest when your Uncle shows you a card trick.

Bieber

For Tuesday’s Word, I wrote about Jennifer Lopez, 42, “gifting” beau/backup dancer Casper Smart, 25, with a custom white Dodge pickup truck for his birthday. Apparently, Lopez “knew that Casper really wanted a truck, and Casper was very excited about the generous gift,” a source told People magazine. “Casper was so excited about his new truck that he decided to drive it to dinner.” In the column, I made a crack about how 1. That “source” sounded like a quotegiving robot and 2. How I was surprised that Lopez didn’t buy him a Fiat considering all the shilling she does for them. This was not the joke to make! Check out my reader mail: “You may need to do some more digging. Chrysler/Dodge/ Ram are owned in part by Fiat, which helped bailout Chrysler! That is why he got a Ram Truck from J. Lo and not a Ford F-150!”

Fiat and Dodge are both owned by Chrysler LLC, when you wrote that J.Lo dreck?” “I feel obligated to point out that Fiat holds a considerable financial and developmental stake in Chrysler (who makes Dodge and Jeep vehicles). It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume she used an “employee discount” (if any money was spent at all) on that Dodge truck.”

That woman in the background is making the same face most of you made at Tuesday’s column.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of late singer Whitney Houston, has reportedly made a verbal deal to star in a reality TV series, according to Radar Online. “This show is being done against her family’s advice,” a source says. tells the website.

her divorce petition, according to TMZ. The main issues he takes with her filing? Seal insists there are “community and quasi-community assets” that need to be divided up, while Klum claims a postnuptial agreement addresses that. In addition, Klum cites Jan. 19 as the official start of their separation, while Seal says the date hasn’t been determined. Seal is also asking for joint physical custody of their children instead of Klum’s proposed full physical custody. “Given that he’s away a lot on tour, giving her primary physical custody is pretty much status quo,” the source says. And both parties are reportedly asking to deny spousal support to the other.

Kevin Costner reveals there were plans for a sequel to “The Bodyguard” — with Princess Diana interested in starring as herself. “Diana and I had been talking about doing ‘Bodyguard 2,’” Costner tells Anderson Cooper in an interview set to air next month. “I told her I would take care of her just the same way that I took care of Whitney [Houston].” Costner was eager to work with her. “She wanted me to write it for her. I said ‘I’ll tailor it for you if you’re interested.’ She goes, ‘I am interested,’” Costner remembers, revealing that he received a draft of the script the day before Diana died.

With a 1-year-old son at home, Penelope Cruz is starting to consider cutting back on her career for the sake of motherhood. “Maybe I’ll make one movie a year, maybe two, but it’s not going to be more than that because I have other priorities now,” Cruz tells Harper’s Bazaar. “I talk about him all day long, even to strangers in the street. It is my favorite subject! But, you know, this is my job.” Cruz and husband Javiar Bardem welcomed son Leonardo last year.

Lindsay Lohan isn’t taking her

In my defense, I am only a recycler of celebrity gossip, not a hard-hitting journalist who knows the ins and outs of the car industry. However, thanks to my eagle-eyed readers, who do know such things, we all now know that this “news item” and “gift” was a total plant by Fiat and that truck was free in exchange for press. Duped! So, really, do celebrities ever pay for anything? Or do they just have to save their cash for when they will inevitably need a high-priced divorce lawyer?

‘The Three Stooges’ The directors responsible for “There’s Something About Mary offer an update to the slapstick antics of Larry, Curly and Moe.

This is a look that is painfully easy to pull off (hurrah) and reliably chic. A win-win, no? The trick is to wear it head to toe — like ivory trousers and a matching blazer as a fashion-forward update on the work suit, or white shorts and a coordinating buttondown as a light way to ease into spring. Just don’t eat any condiments with your lunch that day. KENYA HUNT

hen we read about Jennifer Lopez and her boyfriend Casper Smart, we can sense some disapproval. He is often referred to as her boy toy or dancer boyfriend. The implication is that they are not on the same level. If this is the way the tabloids are handling their coupling, you have to wonder what her friends might be saying to her. Are they concerned this is a rebound relationship following her divorce from Marc Anthony? Are they

telling her that Casper isn’t good enough? Whether you are in a relationship or just starting one, everyone is going to have an opinion — and typically it’s that you are with the wrong person. So who do you trust: you or the people who think they know what’s best for you? What should you say to those naysayers? In JLo’s case, there is no question that Casper hasn’t achieved the professional success she has. But does it matter? The answer is: only if it bothers her. It is important to know when to go with what feels right for you. This might be a time in her life when she wants to lighten the mood a little, or maybe she likes the age difference. Or maybe he is much more her equal than any of us know from where we stand.

How to silence the haters Here is the strategy for what to do when they disparage your relationship. Begin by asking what their specific concerns are. Then, you can respond by saying you are aware of the possible problems and are dealing with them. Or, if it is something you have not considered, you can listen and agree to give it some thought. The goal is to convey to them why your partner is important in your life and thank them for their concern.

GETTY IMAGES

If you can be clear about why you are with someone, it will be much easier to deal with the negative remarks that might otherwise ignite your doubts. Once you have that clarity, you are equipped to handle people’s criticisms about your choice of partner. Jennifer and Casper look pretty happy in the pictures we see. It’s hard to argue with that. — Relationship expert Dr. Jane Greer is the creator of “Shrink Wrap” – national commentary on what we can learn from celebrity relationships – and host of “Let’s Talk Sex” at Healthylife.net. Her book, “What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship,” is available nationwide. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Only Casper and Jen know the dynamics of their relationship.

Voter fraud: Real, or just a fraud? RE: “ACTUALLY, VOTER FRAUD ALIVE AND WELL”: I agree very

much with Mary Stone: Every voter should have ID. In fact, today every person that’s legal should carry ID. I don’t know what it is that people have to fear, if you are not doing anything wrong. On another note, if women would stop dressing like ladies, men would stop groping them. That’s not sexy, and I know fashion. BLANCA HERNANDEZ, VIA E-MAIL

Mary Stone forgot to tell us that there is no universally accepted definition of voter fraud. She forgot to tell us that voter fraud is widely believed to occur when an imposter physically shows up at the polls and attempts to vote, but this is extremely

rare. Ms. Stone also forgot to tell us how difficult it is to get an ID card when you don’t have a birth certificate. What else did she forget?

I’m deeply disappointed Metro ran a story on the socalled study conducted by Charles Blahous. Blahous — who as a Medicare trustee tried to privatize the program — deliberately ignored both the savings and new revenue Obamacare will generate, which will ultimately reduce the deficit. Its a dishonest polemic, and I’m at a loss why Metro wasted space on it.

Mary Stone is a perfect example of someone who believes everything she reads on the Internet. Half of the cases she mentions have been completely debunked. Voter fraud is no more a factor in our elections than it has ever been. As a percentage, prosecutable cases of voter fraud exist 0.0007 percent of the time. This is well within the margin of error in every elec-

ne thing I love about Boston is that no matter how handsomely appointed the bar room, no matter how fancy the crowd, you can always find a group of drunk guys yelling at the game on the TV. So it went on my recent trip to Gem, the new offering from Big Night Entertainment, the group behind the similarly spiffy Red Lantern, among others. Taking its name and design flourishes from the downtown jeweler’s district, they’ve

carved out an exceptionally gorgeous, luxe lounge on the second floor of the historic old building that previously housed Kennedy’s Irish pub. The smallish bar space — there are two adjacent wings for a dining room and a lounge — is opulently appointed, but welcoming, with literally the most comfortable bar seats I can remember. There’s no question that this is going to be a very successful outing from the already successful restaurateurs, with well-heeled people lined up to get in on weekends. I just won’t be one of them, personally. On my way in, the door man politely informed me that they will be enforcing a dress code soon. (All employees seemed polite all around.) As for the dress code, I suppose you wouldn’t want scum-

At Gem, you may have to pay to play — and leave your hooded sweatshirt at home.

Cocktail options better than they need to be I will miss having another crack at the green onion tater tots with Russian dressing, however. And I’m happy to see on the drinks menu an Aviation, made with Cherry Heering instead of Marschino; a variation on a Blood and Sand called the Smokey Quartz made with Dewars White, Cherry Heering,

Carpano Antica and orange juice; and a Sazerac, albeit one of the hardest-shaken ones of my life. Not sure I would’ve ever ended up going near the $18 Gemvara cocktail made with Grey Goose La Poire, Gran Marnier 100, lemon juice and Moet Imperial though — but I suppose we’ll never know.

bags like me in here bumming everyone out. It might pop the illusory luxury bubble created by spending up to $4,500 on bottle service. (That’s for the Louis XIII de Remy Martin cognac.) Or $7 Coronas. At least that’s what the bros on my left were drinking. The group of girls to my right were sucking down vodka sodas. I wonder why creative bartenders even try to swim against the stream of mediocrity sometimes. If only great-looking, potentially amazing spaces like this could put some of their money into improving the general public’s drinking taste.

‘FUTURE THIS’ T

he Big Pink may be best known in America as the band who supplied the main sample for the Nicki Minaj song, “Girls Fall Like Dominoes,” but their new album, “Future This,” may be a chance for them to step outside the shadow of “Pink Friday.” The latest release from the British band, which is centered around singer and guitarist Robbie Furze and synth and beats programmer Milo Cordell, is full of the characteristic huge chorus hooks that made Minaj first take notice — and should soon make the rest of the world’s ears perk up. “I kind of love that pop that comes from all of the greatest bands — The Beatles or the Stones or The Beastie Boys or Nirvana,” says Cordell. “I think that’s what we enjoy doing, writing hooks.” But Cordell says that this preference for combining outthere sounds with catchy pop may have worked for those groups, but it’s definitely not a fail-safe formula.

When your 2009 song, “Dominos” became last year’s “Girls Fall Like Dominoes” single, that must have been a great push to expose you to American audiences. How did the Nicki Minaj collaboration come about?

If you go The Big Pink with Stereo Telescope April 25 Brighton Music Hall 158 Brighton Ave., Allston $17, 800-745-3000 www.livenation.com

“Dominos” had been around in England, and it was kind of a hit in England. It bubbled away everywhere, and we got an email where our manager said to us, “There’s this guy, a producer called JR Rotem, who is writing a track for this female rapper and they’re using ‘Dominos’ as the main sample,” and we’re like, “Cool.” And we never really heard anything about it.

Robbie Furze, left and Milo Cordell are ready for America.

You didn’t hear who it was?

Nothing. ... And then they sent it through literally just before her album dropped and it was Nicki Minaj and we were like, “F—!” It was around the time that Kanye had come out with “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and all that, and we were super aware of Nicki Minaj and we thought that she was amazing. That’s funny. Have you met her?

No, she doesn’t return our calls. She just borrows your hooks?

She’s welcome to do that anytime. We’ve actually borrowed

one of her hooks. In “Dominos” now when we play it live, we sample a bit of “Super Bass” and we kind of flip it up a bit and sing “Dominos” on top. You guys are not only bringing underground to pop, but you’re also bringing more pop to the underground.

Which is a dangerous thing to do, I think, because it can leave you in a complete no-man’sland. The people who like pop think you’re weird, and the people who like weird music think you’re pop.

Finish this hypothetical snippet of conversation: “Oh, The Big Pink, yeah they’re cool. They kind of sound like ... ”

Ideally, it’d be a table of beautiful girls talking about us. [But as far as who we would want people to compare us to,] it’s kind of like Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Beastie Boys and Chemical Brothers. PAT HEALY

Say Anything’s ringleader, Max Bemis, impressed us mightily with his 2003 debut, “Is a Real Boy,” which fused California pop-punk, classic

rock, indie artistry and musical theater into one of the most diversely creative works ever plastered with the term “emo.” His subsequent work has been less daring and vital, but he still ranks among poppunk’s most charismatic and distinctive performers.

Bad Brains Monday, 7 p.m. The Paradise 967 Comm. Ave.,

HR is fronting legendary hard-core band Bad Brains again.

The legend: In the late ’70s, a noodly DC jazz-fusion band discovered the Ramones and, blown away, were miraculously transfigured into a furious punk band called Bad Brains. The Brains’ levels of speed were unheard of, their chops blasphemously overqualified for punk’s amateurish aesthetic, their songwriting a perfect balance of hooks and raw power. And lo and behold, the hard-core genre was born. MATTHEW DINARO

Tito wants little to do with Sox Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona said that he will not take part in the team’s 100th anniversary celebration at Fenway Park next week due to the way he was treated toward the end of last season. “Until I’m more comfortable with some answers on what happened at the end of the year, I don’t want to have much to do with the organization, and that’s a shame,” Francona told The Boston Globe, citing that he was upset that organizational sources leaked information about his marriage and his alleged addiction to painkillers. Francona said that he and Red Sox President Larry Lucchino got into an argument this week over the phone regarding the invitation. METRO

By most accounts, Alex Ovechkin wasn’t Alex Ovechkin this year. Sure, he tallied 38 goals this season, six more than he posted in 2010-11. But his assists dipped by 26, and he finished the season with a minus-8 plus-minus. Just three years ago, he signed the richest contract in league history. The deal suggested that Caps management knew it had the game’s top offensive weapon. But things are now different in the NHL and even the Caps front office has taken notice. “The game has changed since Alex entered the league and we are looking for him to be a better all-around player,” Washington owner Ted Leonsis told The Washington Post in March. “We want him to adapt his game to be productive within the framework of our team,

not necessarily in comparison with others in the NHL.” Ovechkin has already played a role in getting a coach fired (Bruce Boudreau) this season due to lackluster play and had a mixup with old friend and Washington defenseman Dennis Wideman at a Caps practice. If there was ever a season for Ovechkin to just fizzle out, it would be this one. The fact that he will be matched up against Zdeno Chara for the majority of the seven-game set offers even more reason to believe that 2011-12 will not end well for No. 8. Alex Ovechkin and the Caps invade the Garden tonight.

MLB: WHO IS FOR REAL? The baseball season is one week old. If this were football, it would be just past halftime of the first game. With that in mind, everyone should step away from the ledge. There’s no reason to get too high or too low on anyone. However, we’ll need to make quick judgements on guys that are off to fast starts:

Tight fastball Jeff Samardzija was a tight end for Notre Dame and then a relief pitcher. Don’t be scared. That 8 2/3 inning gem he tossed last week was for real. His stuff is nasty.

Wired for Omar In the last five seasons, Omar Infante hit a total of 22 home runs. In the first five games of this season, he smacked three

jacks. Without any speed to speak of, we can confidently leave Infante on waiver wires.

Hosmer, Homer If you’ve slept on the Royals’ offense over the last few years, you’ve missed value. And this year will be no different. Eric Hosmer is off to a piping-hot start because he is one of the best young hitters in the game. Jump on board early here, as Hosmer is still just 22 years old.

Several studies are recruiting now. These studies may require a commitment of 2-6 months.
