After massive blackout, Council seeks answers New master plan

Board approves college dorm building plans BOSTON. The Boston Redevel-

opment Authority recently approved a new master plan by Emmanuel College that includes new buildings and renovations. The plan calls for the demolition of a building on Brookline Avenue and the construction of a new, 17-story building on the site. The 220,000-square-foot Julie Hall will include 720 dorm beds, academic space, a dining hall and student life space. Two hundred new parking spaces will also be created in a below-grade garage. Man faces child porn charges TAUNTON. A 29-year-old Taunton man was charged Thursday in federal court with allegedly possessing thousands of images of child pornography. FBI agents in Los Angeles discovered David McLellan was allegedly sharing images through a peer-to-peer sharing website, according to a federal complaint. During a search of his home, authorities found “tens of thousands of child pornography images” and hundreds of videos. One of the videos depicts him performing oral sex on an 11-month-old girl, authorities said. METRO

Inspection, care of power transformers subject of city council hearing Emergency responders, NStar officials invited to testify Council demands change Saying that changes need to be made to the way power transformers are maintained and inspected, the City Council scheduled a hearing for Friday in the wake of the massive Back Bay blackout earlier this year. Councilor Stephen Murphy, who requested the hearing, expected to question NStar officials about ways to improve preventative maintenance, frequency of inspections and the emergency response to transformer malfunctions. A massive transformer failure at a substation on Scotia Street cut power to about 21,000 homes and businesses in March. Some people went without power for days while some businesses lost customers and eateries lost their inventory. At issue, Murphy said, is

how officials can verify the information and records of maintenance checks by power companies. Substations are inspected by NStar, which then submits reports to the state, according to the Herald. “There is nothing to verify [it],” Murphy said. “No one inspects these facilities besides their own people.” Murphy said he wanted to discuss “verifiable independent inspections” of the transformers so city and state officials do not have to take the power company’s

own word. Several councilors, he said, are moving forward and examining new and better ways to hold energy providers accountable for such incidents. Despite demands by city officials that NStar pay for losses and the police response because of the outage, NStar officials said shortly after the blackout that they weren’t liable for losses. “There was huge costs to us and every business and resident whose food spoiled,” Murphy said. “There were people from fixed income homes who had to throw out food because the power went out on their refrigerators.” STEVE ANNEAR and MICHAEL NAUGHTON

While the hearing was called to look at ways to prevent future blackouts, it was too late to prevent all of them. A request for the hearing was filed in late March after the massive blackout earlier that month. But a failure at the same substation May 8 created another blackout for about 12,000 homes and businesses. However, the most recent one lasted about an hour, compared to days for the March blackout. Boston native Donna Summer, Queen of Disco, dies at age 63 After a battle with cancer, singer Donna Summer died Thursday at the age of 63. The singer, who was born LaDonna Gaines in Dorchester, was known as the “Queen of Disco” because of her string of megahits in the 1970s, which included “Hot Stuff,” “Love to Love You Baby” and “Last Dance.” In a little more than a year she charted four No. 1 singles. Though she reached superstardom and earned most of her five Grammy awards in the disco era, Summer’s success stretched into more contemporary times. She landed No. 1 singles in the ’80s, ’90s, 2000s and even this decade: “To Paris With Love” topped

the charts in October of 2010. The singer will probably best be remembered for not only her contribution to disco, but her help in inventing the genre with producer Giorgio Moroder. But as the trend faded, Summer was able to distance herself from disco. She had one of her strongest hits in 1983 with “She Works Hard For the Money,” an anthem of female empowerment that showed Summer was ready for the MTV age. The singer’s health declined while recently working on an album in Florida. PAT HEALY

Super PAC attacks have yet to begin

Metropolitik BRAYDEN SIMMS POLITICAL WORLDLINESS FOR AN IMPOLITE WORLD

@METROPOLITIK

METRO ILLUSTRATION/NATE JONES

For complaints, suggestions and digital attaboys, e-mail us at brayden.simms@metro.us.

In the campaign silly season, faux scandals erupt with the reliability of Old Faithful. And much like the famous Yellowstone geyser, they’re mostly gone with predictable haste. So it was on Thursday morning, when a front page story by The New York Times set the Internet atwitter with snark. The article in question, “G.O.P. ‘Super PAC’ Weighs Hard-Line Attack on Obama,” detailed a provocative proposal for billionaire conservative Joe Ricketts to mount a super PAC offensive reiterating links between the president and his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The proposal — from which Ricketts distanced himself following hours of Web mockery — played on right-wing fears that President Obama was never properly vetted by the media and that untold stories of his youth hold the key to understanding his allegedly radical beliefs. (The ones, presumably, that he hides beneath his disappointingly moderate exterior.) One of the most damning elements of the report was the suggestion that Ricketts’ Ending Spending Action Fund find an “extremely literate conservative African-American” spokesman, one who can isolate the group from charges of racism while calling attention to the reality of Mr. Obama’s cultivated image as a “metrosexual, black Abe Lincoln.”

“That record was cool some four score and seven years ago!” Something that might be said by “metrosexual, black Abe Lincoln,” maybe.

Twitter and assorted news outlets had a good deal of fun over it all (Call him the Great Manscaper!); Mitt Romney gave a half-throated condemnation of attack ads while taking the opportunity to attack his rival; and Ricketts said he’d spend his $10 million on another attack. Meanwhile, we learned the lengths to which big-money donors may go to get a Republican in the White House. For billionaires like Ricketts, no price is too high if it can get us to buy into the myth that Obama is a dangerous extremist — so they can swoop into power and unfurl their own very real dangerous, extremist agenda. Make no mistake: The super PAC era has only just begun. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Silicon Valley startup Pinterest raised $100 million from a group led by Japanese online retailer Rakuten Inc., valuing the company at about $1.5 billion and underscoring the huge investor appetite for social-networking companies. Pinterest, an online scrapbook where users can “pin” images and follow others, has grown from less than 1 million users in May 2011 to about 20 million in April, according to IT research house comScore.

High valuations Valuations for consumeroriented tech startups have been rising dramatically, as shown by Facebook’s $1 billion purchase of Instagram last month.

The 3-year-old company, led by co-founder Ben Silbermann, had been seeking financing for several weeks, but many in-

vestors were wary about the billion-dollar valuation, venture capitalists said. That valuation puts Pinterest beyond the reach of all but a handful of potential acquirers, probably putting it onto a path for an eventual IPO rather than an acquisition. “It was one of the most hotly contested and sought-after financing events in Silicon Valley in quite some time,” said Mike Jaconi, a Rakuten executive. SUMMER MOVIES CONQUER ALL

We’ve made it through a dismal spring loaded with murderous teens, a massive John Carter flop and dreary vampires Now it’s time to enjoy the blockbusters that we hope are guaranteed to please June 8

“Prometheus” We like to talk about Michael Fassbender quite a bit in this paper, because he is so devastatingly handsome. But the main attraction for the film in which he stars this summer is much larger than just one actor. Helmed by “Alien” director Ridley Scott, “Prometheus” shows what happens when humans in the future travel to a foreign planet to discover their origins. COURTESY TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

June 22

“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” We’re not sure how much a camp factor will come into play with this wacky idea for a film, considering President Lincoln will be played by high-brow Juilliard grad Benjamin Walker. But the plot summary really is that Abraham Lincoln decides to vanquish those vamps once he realizes they are planning to take over the U.S. STEPHEN VAUGHAN TM

June 1 “Snow White and the Huntsman” Whether or not you’re a Kristen Stewart fan, one look at the trailer for this gritty reimagining of the traditional fairy tale is enough to see that this ain’t no “Twilight.” Charlize Theron plays the evil Queen Ravenna, and Chris Hemsworth is the titular Huntsman who — though sent to slaughter Ms. White — becomes her mentor and protector.

Even though there have been a bajillion iterations of Spidey in the last several years, everyone’s anxious to get a look at this one, portrayed by “The Social Network”’s Andrew Garfield and co-starring his real-life girlfriend Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.

Andrew Garfield is Spiderman.

2 It’s fun season

Why hello, better movies The first half of the year is a notorious dumping ground for studio stinkers — save “The Hunger Games,” of course. We’ve suffered enough! “The Avengers” was just a tasting of the treats in store over the next three months as things heat up in the city. First, we take a look at some of the most hotly anticipated films that we’ve been dying to see since well before the new year.

Killer comedies

Adam Sandler’s last few films were truly awful (“Jack and Jill,” we’re looking at you). In this one, Sandler plays a man-child who fathered and raised his own child (Samberg) when he was only 18. When they reconnect several years later, each finds themselves coming undone.

The summer months are the best time for top-notch funny men and women to take over the box office. So take that, Batman.

“Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,” June 22 Consider this one the flip side of “Melancholia,” since it also deals with a heavenly body that is destined to come crashing into Earth. But here, with Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley co-starring, it’s a comedy! “Madea’s Witness Protection,” June 29 Oh Madea, Madea, Madea. What are you up to now? Rather than getting into trouble herself, she’s hosting a family who is a part of the witness protection program.

“Ice Age: Continental Drift,” July 13 That gaggle of animal pals from the last three “Ice Age” movies come together again to fight pirates and explore the new world.

Cranky kids (and adults) always brighten up at the prospect of a couple hours in full-blast air conditioning, and these films will be the icing on that cake.

AUGUST

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days,” Aug. 3 What is Greg going to do with the whole long summer ahead of him? Sorry kid, we don’t feel bad for you.

MAY

“Men In Black 3,” May 25 Agent J (Will Smith) must go back in time to the 1960s to save his friend, Agent K (played by Tommy Lee Jones in the “present” and Josh Brolin in the 1960s) before a disaster befalls him.

JUNE

“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” June 8 The runaways from their New York City zoo find themselves in Monte Carlo, joining a circus traveling through Europe in order to remain under cover.

Will Smith is back in time with “Men In Black 3.”

“The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” Aug. 17 Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton) want to start a family but find themselves to be infertile. One night, they write down all the traits they’d want in a child, bury the box of notes in the backyard and boom, a dirt-covered kid appears on their doorstep soon after.

Music in the movie theater Sing-alongs, dance-offs and an ode to Motown serve up plenty to snap your fingers to.

JUNE

“Rock of Ages,” June 15 The Broadway musical ode to 1980s hair bands has had a long-awaited film adaptation in the works and we’ve been looking forward to it ever since a photo was leaked of Tom Cruise swinging topless above a stage. The cast is loaded with stars — Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta Jones, Russell Brand and Bryan Cranston — and we’re expecting this to be a top-quality event.

JULY

“Katy Perry: Part of Me,” July 5 We’ll doubt that you’re going

to get any good gossip out of this film that purports to share what Katy Perry’s life is like onstage and off, but the tweens will be out in full force, as it’ll only be out in 3-D for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. “Step Up Revolution,” July 27 A group known for their cutting edge flash mob dance performances must band together when a rich businessman threatens to destroy their neighborhood. So they decide to protest-dance! Perhaps Occupy Wall Street could learn a thing or two from their pop and lock moves.

AUGUST

“Sparkle,” Aug. 17 This remake of the 1976 film of the same name bears similarities to “Dreamgirls” — being about a Motown girl group that makes it big. It stars Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston in her last onscreen performance.

oston Ballet wraps up its final performances of the season with “Fancy Free” — a the three-ballet program that is sure to leave you in a good mood. In Peter Martins’ “Barber Violin Concerto,” Lia Cirio and Pavel Gurevich pair against Sylvia Deaton and Yury Yanowsky. It’s a perfect mix of classical and contemporary styles. Deaton and Gurevich’s duet is playful and light, but

the work as a whole lacks cohesiveness. Jerome Robbins’ “Fancy Free” features three sailors, led by James Whiteside competing to impress female passers-by while on shore leave. The spirited choreography is like watching a silent movie, taking more than just dance technique to pull off. It’s a fun, flirty work that BB has studied and executed flawlessly. “Etudes” is like a Degas painting coming to life. The ballet begins with barre work and ends with an intense finale. The silhouettes of ballerinas in classic tutus, prepping reiterate how precise ballet can be. The men steal the show on this one — Jeffrey Cirio, and Paul Arrais and Nelson Madrigal show what it means to be a professional. KATRINA T. LALLIER katrina.lallier@metro.us

‘Battleship’ Grade: What’s next, “Jenga: This Time It’s Personal”? It was uncertain how they could possibly turn a board game into a movie, and now that we’ve seen it, it’s clear that it can’t be done — very well, at least. Two-plus hours of soulless claptrap and joyless cacophony of twisted metal, AC/DC songs and angry aliens does not a movie make. Here’s a new title: “Shock and Awful.” If you are going to see this movie, go for the whole thing. That way by the time the movie gets to the attack, you’ll be so tired of the Hopper Brothers (Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard) and the stoic admiral (Liam “Paycheck” Neeson) that you’ll pray the aliens (big lizardeyed creatures in “Iron Man”

comedies that weave five stories is that no single tale ever gets involved enough for true engagement. In “What to Expect,” a quintuplet of couples struggles through all the cliched contrivances of childbirth — minus single parenthood, that is. The frothy comedy placates to the played-out parental mindset with predictable reassurance, making this one baby without any real teeth. STEVE GOW

“Dazed and Confused” director Richard Linklater helms this film based on the true story of the odd love affair between cantankerous widow Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine) and a well-liked do-gooder, Bernie Tiede (Jack Black), that turns sour when the townsfolk of Carthage, Texas, realize they haven’t laid eyes on Nugent in months. Although Jennifer Lopez has cited family commitments as the reason she’s hesitant to sign on to Season 3 of “American Idol,” there could be simpler, more established motives at play: money and publicity. “J.Lo and ‘American Idol’ are striving for headlines. Check your work: Budget math off RE: “ON THE US DEFICIT: PARTY POLITICS RULE”: Sorry, Mr. Pen-

ner, you can’t refute facts either! The enormous cost (after a major tax cut) of financing the Iran and Afghanistan wars was kept off-budget all during the Bush presidency. That’s a major factor in the deficit today, no matter how much Republicans try to deny it. KATHY KOURIAN, VIA E-MAIL Bush actually inherited a $258 billion on-budget primary surplus; as you stated, the national debt stood at $10.6 trillion when he left office. However, Bush kept the cost of two wars off budget and the U.S. military has largely paid for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through emergency spending measures, in effect keeping

wartime costs off the books. In addition to masking skyrocketing budget growth at the Department of Defense, this process allowed the services to treat budget supplementals as a piggy bank. So the actual price of these war is still unknown and is part of the deficit that you place at President Obama’s feet. Obama took office in the middle of the biggest deficit year in history, dealing with two wars and the most severe recession since the 1930s. It seems to me, Mr. Penner, that your letter supports the fact that “Republicans distort facts to destroy the Obama presidency.” BARB MILUSKI, VIA E-MAIL

According to Larry Penner, our national debt was $10.6 trillion when Obama took office and currently stands at

$16.4 trillion. Larry’s numbers suggest an increase of $5.8 trillion. Larry instead suggests that Obama somehow increased our debt by $6.6 trillion and $5.6 trillion. Not only is this internally inconsistent, neither of these is equal to the increase as calculated by Larry’s own numbers. How much credence should we give to the fiscal views of a man who has apparently failed basic math?

Mr. Penner forgets that President Clinton left W. Bush a surplus. So it leaves one to figure that President Bush squandered the surplus, plus another $4.8 trillion, in eight years. Thank you though, Mr. Penner, for validating that President Bush bled this country dry. PETER FOGA, VIA E-MAIL

76ers seek redemption Sixers look to put Game 3 in rearview Brand says Sixers were ‘overconfident’ prior to the blowout Pierce’s health looks to be better Garnett looking five years younger It only took the first 12 minutes of Game 3 for the Celtics to remember that they are, in fact, the better team in this series. Once that happened, it was all downhill for the Sixers, as evident by the C’s 107-91 stomping Wednesday night. “We all were pretty focused [Wednesday] in shootaround,” Rajon Rondo said after Game 3. “Obviously,

23

Kevin Garnett is somehow rejuvenated this postseason as he is putting up 23.7 points per game against in the series.

Papelbon to headline Red Sox-Phils rivalry Interleague play. It used to be an almost annual chance for Red Sox fans to invade Citizens Bank Park, with “Youk” chants galore. Those days are long gone. When Boston heads to Philadelphia for a three-game set, the stands will be packed with Phillies fans. The ballpark has sold out 238 straight games, including the postseason. The Sox-Phillies rivalry, while tame, is usually one of the better AL-NL ones. Adding intrigue is Jonathan Papelbon. The closer swapped teams this offseason, trading in his Red Sox jersey for a Phillies one, after inking a $50 million deal. On Opening Day, Papelbon said that earning his first save in a non-Boston uniform wasn’t weird. But how about earning one against his former mates?

we had two close games at home and we wanted to show these guys, send a message [Wednesday night] and I think our guys did a good job of that.” If the message was, “You can’t stop us,” then the Sixers heard it loud and clear. But it’s how Philly plays Friday (8 p.m., ESPN) that will determine if they have a snowball’s chance in this series. Down 3-1 going back to Boston? Forget about it. But going back with a 2-2 split would be just fine for a Philly team that has already proven it can win on the road in Boston during the playoffs. To win, the Sixers have to

Sox vs. Phillies Starting pitching has been the Red Sox’s main issue thus far. But Boston could definitely have used Jonathan Papelbon earlier in the season. In 15 appearances in 2012, Pap has 10 saves.

Papelbon

“It won’t be weird. It might be a little weird for Pap, but it won’t be weird for Cinco,” Papelbon told WEEI. “Cinco is like a great white, when he smells blood he attacks.” Cinco, of course, is short for

Cinco Ocho. That’s Papelbon’s alter ego. While the experience of pitching against the Red Sox didn’t appear to bother Papelbon, he did spew some venom at Boston’s training staff. “The previous trainer tried to tell me that he knew everything about me,” he told WEEI. “It’s just not the case. I know myself. I knew how to get through a 162-game season. A trainer doesn’t know how to do that.” METRO

figure out a way to limit Kevin Garnett. Philadelphia successfully did that in Game 2, but KG had his way with Spencer Hawes, Elton Brand and Lavoy Allen in Game 3, dominating the second quarter and finishing with 27 points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes. Hawes, Brand and Allen combined for — wait for it — 11 points, and 10 rebounds in 60 minutes of playing time. That just ain’t gonna cut it fellas. But Garnett knows that a repeat effort of Game 3 will be “the biggest challenge,” and Philly will be out for blood. “[The Sixers] have a lot of young legs, have a lot of individual players that can put up buckets,” Garnett said after Game 3. “And we have to respect that and be ready for that.” JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

Vilma wrote the following on his Twitter account: “As I’ve said before .. I NEVER PAID, NOR INTENDED TO PAY ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY, TO ANY PLAYER FOR INTENTIONALLY HURTING AN OPPONENT.” Vilma’s lawsuit, filed Thursday in New Orleans, asks for unspecified monetary damages. The Saints’ bounty program reportedly awarded between 22 and 27 players with thousands of dollars for putting big hits and — in some cases — knocking out the star players on opposing teams.
