Riders who see something criminal or any suspicious activity can send police a picture, message and location. An anonymous feature is also avail-

A group of disabled and wheelchair-bound activists took to the streets during their protest yesterday — literally. The group chained their chairs together in a crosswalk on Beacon Street in front of the State House to signal their opposition to the MBTA’s fare hikes for THE RIDE. With traffic blocked, police were called in, the chains were cut and the activists retreated to the sidewalk in front of the State House. “Most disabled people are low-income, so this is an emergency for us,” said James Brooks, a community organizer who lives in Brighton. Brooks, who uses a wheelchair, said he relies on THE RIDE nearly every day to get to his job in Jamaica Plain or to medical appointments. The group said they want Gov. Cops: DNA used to arrest Green Line sex attacker

ERIN BALDASSARI/METRO

Man allegedly ejaculated on 23-year-old woman riding B train in 2004 Prosecutors indicted his DNA Suspect accused in similar D.C. attack Prosecutors and police are crediting the indictment of a DNA sample with the capture of a man who allegedly ejaculated on a woman while on a Green Line train eight years ago. Timothy Day, 52, of Maryland, pleaded not guilty in Suffolk Superior Court yesterday. He was charged with indecent assault and battery. Authorities said Day and the woman were riding a B train crowded with Red Sox fans on their way to Fenway Park in 2004. The woman, then 23, said she felt a man with an erection standing behind her. The man fled before the woman was able to identify him and she then noticed a white liquid running down her leg and on her purse.

$1,500

A clerk magistrate set Day’s bail at $1,500 cash. He was expected to be released after posting that yesterday. “She went home and washed her pants,” said Tara Burdman, an assistant district attorney. “The next morning she notified Transit Police who recovered her bag.” The bag was given to the Boston Police Crime Lab, which identified the liquid as semen. A database revealed the DNA was the same in a similar 2002 attack on a train in Washington, D.C., but the man was unknown in that attack as well.

Prosecutors from Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley’s office in 2005 indicted the DNA associated with the attack as “John Doe.” Last year, authorities received a database match on the DNA after Day was convicted of a federal crime and required to submit a DNA sample. Day was arrested by Metro Transit Police last week and turned himself in to police yesterday for the B train attack. “This new science has proven to be another useful tool,” said Transit Police Deputy Chief Lewis Best. “The riding public should know we will use whatever means possible to identify and apprehend and prosecute criminals that engage in this type of behavior.”

Indicting DNA Prosecutors in Massachusetts have indicted multiple DNA samples without knowing to whom they belong as a tool to ensure prosecution. The first time DNA was indicted in the Bay State was for a 1991 rape case. Prosecutors in 2006 indicted the DNA profile as “John Doe.” The move to indict DNA without having a specific suspect led to a 2010 Supreme Judicial Court ruling that upheld the practice.

A top surrogate to Mitt Romney said making money — rather than creating jobs — was the primary goal of the presumed Republican Party presidential nominee when he was running Bain Capital, saying he “acted responsibly” as chief executive officer of the private-equity firm. “The role of private equity as fiduciaries is certainly to make money,” said Tom Stemberg, the founder of Staples Inc., in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital,” airing this weekend. Bain also helped businesses grow, so “these things had redeeming social value, in addition to making Mitt and his investors a lot of money.” Stemberg appeared with a top backer of President Barack Obama, Lawrence Fish, the former chief executive officer of Citizens Financial Group,

THE STAR-LEDGER, NEWARK NJ

A former Rutgers University student was sentenced yesterday to 30 days in prison for a bias crime after he spied on his roommate’s gay encounter in a case that drew national attention to bullying. Dharun Ravi, 20, had faced a maximum of 10 years behind bars for his conviction for using a webcam to invade the privacy of his roommate, Tyler Clementi, and an older man in their college dorm room. Clementi, 18, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, days after learning Ravi watched them through the computer-mounted camera and used social media to encourage others to do so. Ravi was not charged with causing Clementi’s death. In handing down the relatively light sentence, Judge Glenn Berman emphasized

He had no reason to. But I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity,” Berman said. The judge then sentenced Ravi to 30 days in prison, followed by three years’ probation, 300 hours of community service and counseling about cyberbullying. He ordered Ravi to pay $10,000 for an organization that assists victims of bias crimes and to pay $1,900 in penalties. The judge will recommend that Ravi, who was born in India, not be deported. “I heard this jury say ‘guilty’ 288 times. Twenty-four questions, 12 jurors. ... Chris Brown appeared to lip-

sync his way through his Billboard Music Awards performance on Sunday evening, and it didn’t escape the notice of his peers. “One day if I lipsync I hope I do it as well as him,” singer Pink tweeted during Brown’s live rendition of “Turn Up the Music.” Mr. Pink, also known as Carey Hart, wasn’t impressed either. “I’m pretty sure I saw my wife do that same performance, but she was three months pregnant and actually sang the song,” he chimed in, also adding his professional opinion of the subpar BMX biking on stage. This is getting brutal. Joe Jonas, what tweet you? “What happened to people singing live???” Here’s the thing: The song was obviously lip-synced — and laughably poorly. But the choreography is at least as important as the vocals for these shows, and Brown was far from the only one mouthing his way through a song that he probably had no business singing live. But as for the fur-trimmed leather coat over a bare chest? No excuses.

That’s the plan. I wanted to establish my dominance in another medium. I’ve had only like three goals in my life. My first goal was to have a rock band, a record deal and a video on MTV. I’m hoping to become wildly rich. It would be good in general, but specifically, it would be great to just get the dog. Did you ďŹ nd out anything new about yourself in the process of writing the book?

The book is about prolonged adolescence. I don’t think that “becoming a man is the right way to say it. A lot of it is about my relationship with my mother and trying to do things that I think would earn her respect. By the end of the book, I realized none of the stuff I’ve been worried about the past 20 years really matters: It’s more important to be together, as I say in the book. What happens when the game show becomes a party COURTESY OF MTV2

MTV2 polishes off an old nugget and remixes it ‘Hip Hop Squares’ host Peter Rosenberg on finding ‘the real gold’ and on the way he refers to the guests

“There’s a thing in ‘Hollywood Squares’ and ‘Hip Hop Squares,’ that it’s fun and funny, but not at the expense of anybody,” says Rosenberg, above. “You definitely have to tease people — you tease the squares and the contestants — but there’s an overwhelmingly positive atmosphere.”

When considering entertainers like Ghostface Killah, Fat Joe, Amber Rose and Bam Margera, the first word that comes to mind is not usually “square.” But when Peter Rosenberg, host of the new MTV2 show, “Hip Hop Squares,” talks about the celebrity participants on the show, this is the word he most often uses. “There are all of these cool people in a situation where they don’t have to try to be cool,” says Rosenberg, who is best known as a DJ on New York City’s Hot 97. “We had the hottest street and radio artist, 2 Chainz, and based on his persona, the idea of seeing him

Tune in “Hip Hop Squares” premieres tonight at 11 on MTV2.

having fun and being casual is just awesome.” “Hip Hop Squares” is based on the classic game show, “Hollywood Squares.” As was the case with that show, which reached peak popularity in the 1970s, nine famous personalities sit in the squares of a tictac-toe board. In this case though, most are affiliated with the world of hip-hop. While two contestants play tic-tac-toe against each other, they consult

the celebs on trivia questions and can decide to take their advice or disregard it. In one episode, Rosenberg poses the question: “Who is the female recording artist with the most No. 1 hits?” to which Nick Cannon, seated in the center square, excitedly shouts, “That would be my baby mama, Mariah Carey!” The contestant disagrees. “Those moments were awesome,” laughs Rosenberg. “Every once in a while, we get moments where it’s this nobrainer. ... And yet, people would still get it wrong. When those moments happen, that’s when I think you get the real gold of the show.”

It’s hip-hop to be square One of the slogans for “Hip Hop Squares” is “when the game show becomes a party,” and it isn’t unusual to see one of the “squares” with a drink in his or her hand.

“Circle gets the square!”

“There was some partying,” Rosenberg acknowledges. “There were episodes where it was out of control, but I don’t know if I’d blame it on the partying so much as the cast of characters we had. It certainly had a feel that reminded me of the original [‘Hollywood Squares’].”

Dealing with your moody teenager PIXLAND

Does your teen often seem angry, lonely or sad? Is it hard to connect the way you used to? You’re not alone Here’s why, plus some advice Teenage years are often the hardest to get through — not just for adolescents, but for their parents as well. The transitional years between ages 13 and 19 bring an onslaught of internal and external conflict — ranging from pressure at school to hormonal changes. Young adults might shut down or even act out when they’re trying to cope. Dr. Gregory L. Jantz, founder of The Center for Counseling and Health Resources, recently published “When Your Teenager Becomes the Stranger in Your House.” We asked him to tell us more about what teenagers are going through, how parents can detect early warning signs and how to ease this difficult period for the whole family.

Is Your Child Overweight?

It seems like all teenagers are excessively moody. Why?

One of the things is the technology issue. We’re finding an interesting trend with how young people are consumed with technology, as far as textmessaging and screen time. There reaches a point where the brain is oversaturated and overstimulated, and we end up creating a depressed brain with overanxiousness. About 20 percent of [U.S.] teenagers are clinically depressed. That’s different than moodiness. You talk about girls and boys separately — how are their experiences different?

There are gender differences [as far as] what’s going on in the brain. A boy handles depression and moodiness differently than females. Of course, testosterone is an aggression chemical, so boys may be acting out more in a physical sense. Girls who have unresolved depression … the more the intensity, the more inward they become. And with girls, we’re seeing this at earlier and earlier ages. How can parents communicate when teens are working so hard to shut them out?

Researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston are studying the effect of different foods and beverages for weight loss in 12-17 year olds. Benefits include: • Individual sessions with a dietitian • Cooking demonstrations • Daily text messages American Express® gift card ($120) at the end of the study. quickly, but we should be sure that we’re listening first.

Q&A What are some of the warning signs parents should look for? I always look for how long the symptoms are present. Has this been going on a couple of weeks, has it increased? Maybe they seem fatigued a lot, their motivation is gone? You’ll see a lot of social isolation, where they move away from family and probably friends. [It’s normal to want] to be your own person, but this is more of cutting off from others. There’s more impulsive thinking, a lot of rash judgment and irresponsible behavior.

60 ARE YOU YEARS

Confused About What To Eat and Drink?

They need to feel accepted, understood and affirmed by us. I think oftentimes we can get very judgmental — and remember, they’re hypersensitive to anything critical. [They need] to know they have value. This doesn’t mean you agree with everything they say. Too often we want to fix things

A breakdown in communication between you and your teen may be attributed to his or her use of technology.

OLD OR OLDER?

How much should parents feel responsible for what their teens are going through?

Let teens have their emotions, and don’t rescue them. You’re the parent, not the friend. If we’re helicopter parents, they’re not going to learn to deal with the three [adult] emotions of anger, fear and guilt. What should parents do when it gets too extreme?

There’s a point where we have to step in and say, “We’ve got to get some outside help.” The biggest regret [is] wishing we hadn’t waited so long. T. MICHELLE MURPHY

There’s more to the Jersey Shore than fake tans and fist-pumps Although there is plenty of that to go around — thanks, Wildwood!

AC alternative Atlantic City is the spot for beachside nightlife, but she’s not nearly as hot in the morning. If you’re looking to hit up the casinos, consider setting up camp in neighboring Brigantine. The lowerkey shore point is but a cab ride away.

f you’re looking to relax, entertain the kids or party on the boardwalk, southern New Jersey has a beach resort for you.

For families: Ocean City Ocean City takes its self-appointed title of “America’s Greatest Family Resort” seriously. Just this year, the squeaky clean, historically dry town shot down a proposal that would have allowed patrons to bring their own wine or beer to restaurants. Does it limit dinner plans? Yes. But it also makes for a family-friendly beach scene, a retro-wholesome boardwalk and blissfully peaceful condo rentals. Eat this: Manco & Manco Pizza is a boardwalk legend, serving up what everyone on the island — and nearby Philadelphia, for that matter — will tell you is

For pool parties: Wildwood With its hard-partying boardwalk and downtown, Wildwood has long been the Shore’s spring break capital. If you’re not into Jell-O shots, the island boasts gigantic sprawling beaches that regularly end up on “best of” lists for their free access — not to mention swings and seesaws. Ride this: Morey’s Piers are packed with amusements and waterslides — and not the second-rate kind you usually find at beach towns. Roller-coaster nerds will dig the old-school wooden Great White and its loopy younger siblings, while slower-paced beach bums should book a white-linen breakfast on the iconic, looming Ferris wheel.

“real pizza.” Order up as many of the thin, ocean air-kissed slices as you can hold, and get ready to fend off the seagulls — they’re in on the secret.

For a retreat: Stone Harbor and Avalon While many shore communities are packed with sunburned tourists, you’re likely to sit next to locals at the neighborhood bars of these lowerkey locales. Make reservations here: Headed up by a team of Philly chefs looking for a little summer fun, The Diving Horse (www.thedivinghorseavalon.com) offers something that the Jersey Shore admittedly lacks: a kitchen that’s as skilled as it is ambitious. MONICA WEYMOUTH

Stay here While the laid-back vibe is the draw of Stone Harbor and Avalon, there’s a nightlife scene for when you’re done with your book. Right on the border of the two towns, the newly remodeled Windrift Hotel (www.windrifthotel.com) offers a variety of lounges and bars, including a third-floor oceanfront deck with killer views.

The Windrift Hotel adds a pop of nightlife to Avalon.

Van Gundy fired in Orlando For several years, it was assumed that either Stan Van Gundy or Dwight Howard would be out in Orlando. While the Magic scramble to make sure that Howard stays for the long term, they finally dumped Van Gundy yesterday. General manager Otis

Smith was also axed. “It’s time for new leadership and new voices, Orlando CEO Alex Martins said in a statement. “The disappointment of getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs these past two seasons played a primary role in our decision,

as we feel our momentum towards winning a championship has paused.” Van Gundy guided the Magic to a 259-135 record in five seasons as head coach and took the franchise to the NBA Finals in 2009. In recent years, however, a

Game 5: Celtics 101, Sixers 85 (BOS leads, 3-2)

strain developed in the Van Gundy-Howard relationship, reaching a climax in April of this year when it was learned that Howard had asked management to fire Van Gundy. Orlando went 37-29 this season but were ousted by Indiana in the playoffs. METRO

Celtics clobber Sixers thanks to huge third quarter Stiemsma gets hot early Bass dominates second half Allen still banged up C’s will look to close out series tomorrow JESSE D. GARRABRANT/GETTY IMAGES

Three things we learned last night in the Celtics 101-85 victory over the 76ers in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series:

1

WHO STEPPED UP?

The news wasn’t good for Boston before the game: Starting shooting guard and defensive specialist Avery Bradley would miss the game. That meant Ray Allen would start, but more importantly, an already thin Celtics bench just got thinner. Philadelphia’s bench has been dependable all season, but the disparity between the two benches last night was just seven points in Philly’s favor (27-to-20). For Philly to compete, they need more from Lou Williams (3-of-10, nine points) and Thaddeus Young (3of-8, six points). Boston held them down, and that was a big reason as to why it pulled away down the stretch.

Role on Several role players stepped up big for the Celtics last night in Game 5. Brandon Bass had his defining game as a Celtic as he posted a team-high 27 points in 37 minutes of play. Greg Stiemsma Got hot early on and Doc Rivers rewarded him with 14 minutes off the bench. Stiemsma finished with 10 points and three blocks.

2

Lin gets start

BASS IS BIG

You’d be hard-pressed to find anybody who called Brandon Bass a Sixers-killer prior to last night, but low and behold, he was. Bass went off on Philly in the third quarter, dropping 18 points in that quarter alone. He did it with dunks, he did it with jump shots, and he helped awaken a Boston crowd that was relatively quiet for the first twoand-a-half quarters. Bass finished the night with 27 points, going 9-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line, while grabbing six rebounds. Elton Brand had 19 points of his own in this one, but he was just one of the Sixers with no answer for Bass on the other end.

Che-Hsuan Lin got his first MLB start last night for the Red Sox against the Orioles in Baltimore. Lin was recalled during the weekend after Cody Ross went down with a broken foot. Boston currently has five outfielders on the disabled list, including Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford and Darnell McDonald. Ross fouled a ball off of his left foot last Friday against the Phillies. Sox manager Bobby Valentine projected that Ross would be out “probably less than a couple of months.”

3

YOUNG THE GIANT

With their win in Boston, the Celtics head to Philadelphia with a chance to end the series tomorrow night. The question, though, is how will each team come out? Two of Boston’s three wins have come in blowout fashion, but the 76ers’ comeback win in Game 4 is perhaps the most impressive – depending on who you ask, of course. Philadelphia was thought to have believed in themselves after that game, but it was tough to see that resonate during the fourth quarter when Doug Collins was pleading with them to keep their heads up. Boston smells blood. JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

Have you been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes?

Winners of eight of their last 10, the Red Sox finally had the look of a cohesive bunch heading into last night’s game against Baltimore. They also have a wonderful opportunity ahead in the form of six straight games (entering last night) against the top two teams in the American League East, all sandwiched around the first day off in three weeks. The division is so bunched that a strong showing this week could have Boston closing in on the top spot, as crazy as that sounds considering the first few weeks of the season. The Sox used to feel more at home at Camden Yards

than the Orioles did. They regularly whipped the hapless O’s in front of a legion of red-clad fans who bought cheap tickets on Southwest in order to invade what many called “Fenway South.” To the outsider, it was nauseating. To the Sox, it was a big reason why they were able to have so much success last decade. My, how times have changed. After going 67-28 in Baltimore from 1999 to 2009, Boston is just 8-10 there in its last two seasons. The bookends to that stretch are notable. There was the threegame Baltimore sweep in Camden Yards in early May

2010, two of the wins coming in the 10th inning and each of them painful enough to elicit an angry visit from general manager Theo Epstein, who was reportedly quite peeved with his 11-14 club. Then there was the final three games of the 2011 season, also at Camden Yards, where the Sox split the first two before dropping a heartbre … ah, you know the rest. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have taken four of the first six meetings against the Rays, limiting Tampa Bay to a total of 17 runs in the six games. TONY LEE
