35 Boston area drivers wasted almost an entire work week idling in traffic in 2011 —35 hours total, according to a study released yesterday by Washington-based traffic intelligence and data company INRIX. The Hub's worst traffic occurred on Thursdays at about 5:30 p.m. Boston ranked ninth among the top 10 cities for worst congestion. Honolulu was first with 58 hours wasted annually.

Is Hub’s future in flux? Local CEO pokes fun at Menino in video of future of Boston New group tries to stir young Bostonians Cites lack of late night options, brain drain as issues Video called ‘divisive’ A video posted recently on YouTube is hoping to stir young Bostonians and takes aim at city leaders for holding down the Hub and causing its “brain drain.” Greg Selkoe, the CEO of the Boston-based online streetwear retailer Karmaloop, helped to found the group behind the video — the Future Boston Alliance. The more-than-two-minute video posted Saturday is a mission statement from the group that officially launched about a week ago and says its criticism comes from a love and desire to improve Boston. “It’s not a zero sum game. We want to be frank and we’re trying to be honest and have a real conversation, which includes criticism,” said Selkoe, 37. “At the end of the day the point is not to draw a line whether you’re with us or against us.”

While the narrator of the video is quick to say that the group loves Boston, the video begins with the narrator saying that “Boston is less than the sum of its parts.” “We don’t want our city that will be a place that will ban moshing or tell Nike what kind of shirts they can put in their windows,” the narrator explains while a cartoon of Mayor Thomas Menino uses a bullhorn to yell at people and businesses. Selkoe said his company has more than 200 employees with 85 percent being from outside Massachusetts. Chelsea strip club employee charged in patron stabbing Club staffer is accused of stabbing Somerville man 10 times Pleads not guilty to attempted murder charge ERIN BALDASSARI/METRO
An employee of a Chelsea strip club is accused of stabbing a patron after an argument inside the establishment. Jody Lassiter, 49, of Everett pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Monday, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office. He was charged with armed assault with intent to murder. Police responded to King Arthur’s Lounge just after midnight May 15 and found a 33-year-old Somerville man suffering from stab wounds. He was stabbed 10 times in the head, neck, shoulder and chest, authorities said. “The victim’s injuries were so severe that Chelsea police notified the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, which has jurisdiction over homicides in that city,” the Suffolk district attorney’s office said in a statement. The man was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in critical condition. He survived the attack, but spent five days in the hospital. When Chelsea officers ar-

Edible signs tell you to it’s time to stop eating Obesity has become a more serious problem than smoking in the U.S., affecting 35 percent of adults and costing hundreds of billions of dollars. Researchers from Cornell University may have found a colorful solution to overeating. An experiment conducted on 98 college students found that people ate less when they were confronted by edible “stop signs.” The research team inserted chips that had been dyed red at regular intervals of five to seven into a reg-

Millennials are the new poverty class Does America have a new poverty class that leans closer to Charles Dickens than it does to Charles Darwin? OK, maybe “survival of the fittest” doesn’t have much to do with it, or at least it isn’t the most compelling reason that younger Americans have fallen into the poverty class. After all, the “bad luck” generation hit their early 20s in the teeth of an economic gale — which hasn’t really abated for them. But the data doesn’t lie, and it does support the notion that younger U.S. adults are sinking into poverty. Right now, the U.S. unemployment rate for the age 20-24 demographic stands at 13.5 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, compared to 8.1 percent for the general population.

Besides the larger realization among Millennials — and many economists — that between automation and outsourcing, good job opportunities are scarce, younger adults are moving back into their parents’ houses because they’re broke. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 5.9 million young adults between the ages of 25 and 34 lived with their parents by 2011, up from 4.7 million in 2008. The agency also says that 45 percent of those “double-uppers” generate incomes that are below the poverty lines.

t can be hard to tell who’s winning the Bain Capital debate that’s been roiling political circles this week. Oh sure, diehard partisans will insist their message is getting across and that their opponents are flailing, but we certainly needn’t believe them. Yet there is a winner, and that winner is us. It started on Sunday talk show “Meet the Press” when Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, a Democrat, criticized an ad put out by President Obama’s re-election campaign. Booker judged the attack ad — which contrasted Mitt Romney’s touted business experience with the lives destroyed in the wake of his company’s highly profitable machinations — as “nauseating,” explaining that it made him “very uncomfortable.” The fallout began immediately. Republicans pounced on the quotes, while Booker quickly walked them back, clarifying — and then re-clarifying — that he in fact stands with Obama 100 percent. But the damage — or rather, opportunity — had been done. With no haste, an-
QUOTED Priorities USA, the super PAC supporting President Obama’s re-election campaign, released an ad of its own, featuring quotes from Republicans attacking Romney’s Bain record: “It’s the ultimate insult when Mitt Romney comes to South Carolina and tells you he feels your pain — because he caused it. ... There is something inherently wrong when getting rich off failure and sticking it to someone else is how you do your business.” Rick Perry
“[They] loot companies, leave behind broken families, broken towns.” NEWT GINGRICH
“Governor Romney has claimed to have created over 100,000 jobs at Bain, and people are wanting to know: Is there proof of that claim? ... And that’s fair, that’s not negative campaigning.” Sarah Palin
“Governor Romney enjoys firing people.” JON HUNTSMAN
“While Mitt Romney was at Bain Capital, almost one out of every four companies they were involved with went bankrupt ...” John Brabender
other pair of Democrats, former Tennessee pol Harold Ford Jr. and Obama’s former “auto czar” Steve Rattner, jumped aboard the Free Private Equity bandwagon, and Team Romney spun it all as an Obama attack on freedom.
Y
et it’s not too difficult to suss out what is going on here. Ford is currently a managing director for Morgan Stanley. Rattner co-founded a private equity firm and worked for Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley and others. Booker is a sitting politician whose job is directly linked to the financial sector: Bain and other similar firms contributed hundreds of thousands to his last election. “I’m not about to sit here and indict private equity,” Booker said. No, he’s not, but not due to any strong moral convictions. Booker and his compatriots have a clear conflict of interest here; in Washington as elsewhere, you don’t bite the hand that feeds you. But nor must we eat from the hand that bites us. (Pardon the strained metaphor.) The financial industry bankrolls the entire political complex, making it practically impossible to oversee. Any time the conversation gets shifted to the real levers of power, and the arms that pull them, is a moment when we can honestly discuss the problems before us. Is Romney gaining the upper hand? Did Obama score points? Who knows? Let’s linger on this accidental peek into the smoke-filled room. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Facebook trails off, regulators call for review Facebook’s shares fell sharply again yesterday and two top U.S. financial regulators called for a review of the circumstances surrounding its troubled initial public offering last week. The separate calls for review, by Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro and FINRA Chairman Rick Ketchum, added pressure on the company, its underwriters and the Nasdaq, all of which have taken blame for the stock’s harried opening and subsequent sharp decline. After Friday’s nearly flat close and Monday’s 11 percent plunge, Facebook shares were down 5.9 percent at $32.01 in midafternoon trading. At that price the company has shed more than $16 billion in mar-
ket capitalization from its $38per-share offering price last week. Volume was again heavy, with 74 million shares changing hands. That followed turnover of 168 million shares Monday and 581 million on IPO day. With Facebook shares all but impossible to sell short, investors have sought out almost any related vehicle to bet against the social network. Over the past three trading days, prices plunged on two closed-end funds that owned pre-IPO shares. Firsthand Technology Value Fund and GSV Capital Corp. both dropped more than 25 percent even though their Facebook holdings make up only a small fraction of assets. REUTERS

2 The feed ... Checking in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer. Today, Seth MacFarlane has motion sickness, Nicole Richie is keeping it together, Kirstie Alley is up early and Alec Baldwin finds Cannes a bit noisy. @SethMacFarlane Dear Hollywood: It’s time to retire the “found footage” movie genre and start holding the camera steady again. I’m getting queasy. @nicolerichie I don’t cry when I get my bangs trimmed, so I’m pretty sure I don’t need therapy anymore @kirstiealley PS..since when do FedX guys come at 6:45 AM??? @alecbaldwin Some of these restaurants are really just clubs that serve food...

Mendes, Gosling as boring as us As you may know, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have been holding hands, going on coffee runs and otherwise surfacing every Sunday afternoon looking adorable together. But it now seems that last month’s breakup rumors might not have been purely the work of jealous gossip columnists. After accompanying Gosling to Thailand for a film shoot and playing house, Mendes wants to make it official and share a Netflix account, according to Us Weekly.
Why, Internet? The Internet’s a strange, dark, little marketplace, but even we weren’t ready for this: A mystery bidder paid $18,000 for a pair of underwear once worn by Queen
“He says he wants to slow down and not live with her yet,” a questionable friend tells the magazine, adding that Gosling is growing distant while Mendes is learning to cook. “But he doesn’t want to lose her.” We get that these two are merely humans under their impossibly beautiful facades, but would it kill them to add a little glamour for our viewing pleasure? We can watch this scenario play out in a Target parking lot.

Nineteen-year-old former Disney star Miley Cyrus thinks frank discussions about sex shouldn’t be off-limits for kids. “Girls who base how much they’re worth on the sexual favors they can do for somebody, that makes me really sad, because sex is actually really beautiful,” she says during an interview for “The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet” this week. “It’s ignorant to not talk to

Katy Perry’s brief romance with Florence and the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd is over, according to Us Weekly. “It wasn’t that serious,” a source says. “It’s not a nasty thing, and they are still talking, but Katy told him to do his thing and they’ll talk soon.” Perry and Ackroyd started dating about a month ago, and were first spotted together at the Coachella music festival.

merica’s guilty pleasure nighttime soap, “Revenge,” wraps its first season tonight at 10 on ABC. Fans of the show have been hit with twists and turns since its September premiere, so we enlisted star James Tupper, who plays the (supposedly) murdered David Clarke on the series, for some clarity as to what’s really going on in this Hamptons murder mystery.

What can you tell us about tonight’s finale?
Q&A: James Tupper
From left: Judge Jennifer Lopez, finalists Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez, and judges Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson end the “American Idol” journey tonight. MICHAEL BECKER / FOX.
What do you think is it about Emily that viewers can’t get enough of? Every guy relates to Daniel not quite having the whole story — like, “What? You’re who?” Emily has mastered the Mona Lisa smile. That’s the great female mystery: “Do you love me, or do you want to kill me? I can’t tell.” [Laughs.]
[Creator Mike Kelley] is amazing because he’s really an artist. What he’s managed to figure out is this incredible, intricate, detailed story where every week it seems that every single person is in peril. [Laughs.] It’s fun for us because we crack open a new script and at the end of a reading, everybody’s like, “Oh, my God, I’m going to jail?” “This person’s dead?” He’s great at surprising people constantly. How much do you know about what’s going to happen in future episodes?
I’m following it like everybody else. We get it probably six weeks before you guys and we just read it then make it. But I have a general idea where it’s going. At the front of every script there’s a big confidentiality agreement that we all sign. So I’m not gonna tell you, but I will tell you that it’s alarming. He’s not locked into having all the same characters.
Good to be guilty How do you feel about the show being people’s guilty pleasure? When I first started getting interviewed about the show, they were like, “I’m calling it my guilty pleasure.” I realized that it’s so fun to be that dramatic, and allow yourself to go there that people feel guilty. [Laughs.] I think “Revenge” is a lot of fun wrapped up in this sinister, pretty serious world where lots of things are at stake. Is your character really dead?
My God, I have to tell you: I was pushing a stroller with my 3-year-old in it, and a woman yelled at me from across the street, like, “You’re not dead, are you?” It’s the question I get asked the most often and I get asked everywhere. It’s fine, I love it. I love how invested people are in it — it’s awesome. You know, as far as I know, I think I’m dead so far. The rumor is that star Emily VanCamp is dating her co-star, Josh Bowman, who plays Daniel.
I heard that rumor. I can’t confirm or deny it. I really don’t know, actually. I mean, they get along great on set. They’re discreet. MEREDITH ENGEL

elf-referential cheese has never been so much fun. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, the SpeakEasy Stage Company delivers a veritable kitsch-fest complete with leg warmers, glow sticks, a giant disco ball and songs like “Evil Woman” and “Have You Never Been Mellow?” setting the scene. The shorts may have been short in 1980, but Ryan Overberg (Sonny) redefines hanging by a thread in a pair that scream potential wardrobe malfunction and make you wonder how he can move, breathe or sing. Overberg, a Boston Conservatory student, is delightfully engaging as the dimwitted artist who dreams of opening a roller disco. Strong vocals and the kind of timing you just
Plot points Based on the Olivia Newton-John cult film of the same name, “Xanadu” is the tale of a Greek muse (Clio) who appears in Venice Beach, Calif., in 1980 to help a young artist live his dream. who wins Sonny’s heart. Spreading glitter everywhere, Donovan displays impressive vocal chops and a heretofore unseen knack for rollerskating. Local favorite Kathy St. George lights up the stage in one of her best comic performances as both Calliope and Aphrodite. Shana Dirik is equally hilarious in dual duty as Melpomene and Medusa. Though her skating skills in the finale are — ahem — challenged, it makes live theater more fun! A FRED-LETTER DAY

A new Fred Perry standalone store opens on Newbury Street tomorrow One of the highlights of the new store is the Amy Winehouse Collection You can go back to black — or even pink
T
here’s something bittersweet about the opening of Boston’s first standalone Fred Perry store on Newbury Street tomorrow. The famous sport-meets-street look adopted by both the U.K. mod and skinhead cultures in the ’50s and ’60s has more recently been popularized by such musical figures as Paul Weller, Damon Albarn and the late Amy Winehouse. In 2010, Fred Perry debuted the first Winehouse designed collection, and this spring/summer sees her final designs. “Amy died nearly a year ago — believe it or not. It’s been a strange 12 months,” says Richard Martin, Fred Perry’s head of global marketing. “She was very involved with the collection. We had meetings with the family after the tragedy, asking them what they wanted to do. They wanted the collection to continue, but we had to continue in a different way.” Enter PPQ designer Amy Molyneux, who created much of Winehouse’s onstage wardrobe. Going forward, Moly-

Royalties and fees from the collection’s sales, plus a seasonal donation from Fred Perry, will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which supports charities aiding young people — especially those with financial disadvantage or addiction. “We felt that, morally, it was the only way to carry on,” says Martin. “Also, for future collections, the only way to continue was to work with someone who had worked with Amy and had a true sense of her style.” LINDA LABAN

Pinterest for your bucket list ‘My Last Wish’ is a social network based on death Users find friends according to what they’d like to do before they die Then maybe there’s love in the air for a pair of skydivers DIGITAL VISION
A new social network has an interesting premise: connecting people around the world based on what they want to do before they die. Called “My Last Wish,” the app encourages users to post wishes on a “Wish Wall” and then befriend others who might share their dreams. “I believed in the possibility that there can be two persons in this world with the same hopes, dreams and wishes,” Kirtan Thaker, co-founder of the White Lotus Corporation, the group behind the app, told Mashable. “I was confident that if we create a app where this possibility can be turned into reality, people will love this concept and they will get a chance to make friends who are unknown but [have] just one thing in common, which is the last wish.”
When sharing a wish, users can also choose to attach their e-mail address or phone number so others that share their dream can connect with them. Tapping on a person’s contact information within the app will add their information to the contacts list in your phone. You can also receive push notifications when people add wishes to the wall. A palm icon appears beside wishes, allowing you to “aLike” a wish you share, or “give a five” to that person to express your support for their wish and become friends. While definitely a little morbid, and certainly out of the ordinary, the app already has a little bit of a following. Posted wishes range from things such as traveling the world to writing a book. Thaker says that the ultimate goal behind the app is

to help people make friends that share similar hopes and dreams, or even help someone potentially find his or her soul mate. White Lotus plans to add a location-based feature to the app in the future to help you find people located physically around you, and if the iOS version of the app does well the company plans to release an Android version as well. Dr. Oz’s tips to transform your health According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, getting healthy isn’t about living longer, it’s about living and looking better today Some of his tips for getting on the right track Get your checkup: A staggering third of Americans skip their yearly health checkup. In the kitchen with Teresa Giudice
‘Second nature’ Were cookbooks something you always envisioned yourself doing? Well, cooking has always been my second nature. My parents are off the boat, I'm first-generation [Italian], so I’ve always cooked with my mom growing up and I’ve always been around authentic
The mom and reality star is no stranger to drama — or good Italian food She dishes on her cooking Teresa Giudice, the table-flipping Italian matriarch of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” has just released her third cookbook, “Fabulicious: Fast & Fit,” featuring lightened-up versions of Italian favorites like chicken parm and fettuccine alfredo. We chatted with the TV star and mom of four about serving up specialties without the guilt. When we think of Italian food, we often think of heavy dishes like eggplant parmesan or spaghetti and meatballs. What are your tricks for lightening up these meals while keeping the flavor intact?
The key to a lot of it is baking

I have a fettuccine carbonara in my book just using eggs and egg whites instead of the heavy cream. I definitely use wholewheat pasta. My kids, I have to say, they’ve gotten used to the taste — at first they didn’t like it. But now my kids love it. And you know what, it’s really good for you because there’s a lot of fiber in it. How do you stay in shape?
Everyone’s always [telling] me “you look amazing.” They love my arms! My thing is, of course,
just eat healthy, but you also have to exercise, and I think that keeps your heart healthy and it makes you look great also. My husband and I go to the gym together and this is the thing: You don’t always do the same thing. You have to mix it up. I’m always mixing up my routine. I never do the same thing because then your body gets used to it and you don’t see any change. Sometimes I use the machines, sometimes I use free weights, I do boxing, I do TRX. You have to mix it up so your body doesn’t get used to the same thing — that’s how you see results in your body. So are you trying to be the next Bethenny Frankel with these

Well, my first cookbook was “Skinny Italian,” and I think that was even before she even came out with Skinnygirl Margarita. It takes a year for a cookbook to come out, so I think when her Skinnygirl Margarita came out, my “Skinny Italian” book came out at the same time. I wasn’t copying off of her or anything. If anything, you know, “Skinny Bitch” has been around so long. My thing is, everyone always would tell me “you’re a skinny Italian,” so that’s where I got “Skinny Italian” from. MEREDITH ENGEL

American evolution is a real brain drain I’ve just visited the Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., which has an excellent display on human origins. Many Americans need to visit that museum urgently. That so many of us deny evolution and believe in astrology merely shows how close to the Dark Ages we really are. If nearly half the population rejects the most basic scientific discoveries of the past 500 years, I wonder how many of them believe in gravity or Earth’s motion around the sun. This has a practical effect. It means that percentage of people cannot work in any of the natural sciences. The collective brain-power of the United States is running at half-speed.
RE: “SOCIAL COMPACT WITH GRANDPARENTS DENIED”: Mr.
Charlesworth, I just have one question for you: Why should young people care about the health care, earned or not, of old people if old people don’t care about the health care of young people? We need to think as ourselves as citizens who all need health care equally; till then everyone will — little by little — lose. SUZY SANDOR, VIA E-MAIL

In response to the letterwriter who finds it disturbing and hypocritical to hear some black people say that marriage should be between a man and a woman, let me enlighten you a bit. This wasn’t a black people idea. This was God’s idea. I am a black man 24/7 and I can’t change that. I have known gay people who decided that they weren’t gay anymore. when people of any other race express their political or moral beliefs they are not seen as prideful, but as expressing their American viewpoint. iLASIK™ procedure, the cornea trained physicians at New England Eye Center now offer the most advanced procedures available to treat a variety of vision correction disorders. What is astigmatism? Astigmatism is a condition where vision is blurred by
asymmetric steepening of the cornea or crystalline lens. Patients with astigmatism may not only notice blurring of vision at both distance and near, but can also note shadowing or ghosting of images as well. These vision symptoms are caused when light entering the eye is refracted or bent to
multiple points in the eye, resulting in an out of focus image. Astigmatism is very common, and occurs in about 1 in 3 people. Astigmatism can be easily corrected by contact lenses or eyeglasses. However, if glasses or contacts are troublesome, or not tolerated, there is another option. New

England Eye Center offers many alternatives to glasses and contacts for the correction of all types of refractive error, including astigmatism. Custom LASIK and PRK are available not only for near and far sightedness, but for the correction of astigmatism as well. For cataract patients, astigmatism can be either treated with incisions made during cataract surgery, or with implantation of advanced lens technology. Why should I have my Astigmatism treated with a surgical alternative to contacts and glasses? If left uncorrected Astigmatism can cause eye strain, headaches and difficulties in everyday tasks from reading to working to outdoor activities. While glasses and many contact lenses are on the market to effectively correct astigmatism, if you are uncomfortable in either, it is important for you to know you have options. While glasses are your safest alternative, many people either are not able to tolerate their entire astigmatism correction in eyeglasses, or do not achieve the clear vision they desire or need for everyday living. Contact lenses, worn and cared for properly are a wonderful alternative to glasses. However, contact lenses are not without risks, and are not well tolerated by everyone. Many people are contact lens intolerant, whether due to underlying dry eye, reaction to contact lens solutions, or corneal inflammation or infections due to contact lens wear. For these patients, contact lenses are no longer an
option and eyeglasses do not allow for functioning at the highest level. What other procedures are available to me to correct my vision? The physicians at New England Eye Center routinely perform LASIK and PRK, however there are lens procedures for patients which can also provide freedom from contacts and glasses. The Visian implantable collamer lens, which has the added benefit of being removable, can treat a wide variety of patients who are nearsighted and it is also a wonderful alternative for patients with dry eye issues or people who do not qualify for LASIK. For patients who have added reading glasses to their vision correction needs, many options are available, including monovision and conductive keratoplasty. For patients with a cataract, intraocular lenses are available that offer improved freedom from glasses at distance, intermediate, and near vision. These include the Crystalens accommodating lens, as well as the Restor and Tecnis multifocal lenses. For our cataract patients with astigmatism, Toric intraocular lenses can be implanted to neutralize their astigmatism. Dwight Howard went down a long time ago. Derrick Rose was done after one playoff game. Chris Bosh might not make back in time for Miami to defend its Eastern Conference title. It may be shocking to say, but the Boston Celtics are relatively healthy compared to this season’s early contenders for the East crown. Ray Allen will likely give it another go tonight, but in Game 5 the Celtics’ 3-point specialist looked the worst he has since he arrived in Boston in the summer of 2007. Despite getting the start over Avery Bradley, who did not dress due to huge injury issues of his own with two bad shoulders, Allen scored just five points on 2-of-7 shooting. TNT cameras even caught him wincing in pain on the bench during the game as it seemed as though the bone spurs in his right ankle were acting up once again. Allen underwent double ankle surgery back in April of 2007 and has had issues with his ankles dating all the way back to 2003. The C’s sniper seemed to have turned the corner after the first two games of the Philadelphia series, scoring 12 points in Game 1 and 17 points in Game 2. There is al-

Brand name Philly’s Elton Brand looked 10 years younger in Game 5 Brand has scored 19 points twice this postseason, the former coming at Chicago.
Doug Collins wants his too-young-to-know-anybetter team to know that they have a shot to perform a feat similar to that of the 1982 Sixers, who upset Larry Bird and the Celtics at Boston Garden in a Game 7. “The big thing I said to them was ‘how bad do you want to go back there for Game 7,” the Sixers head coach said. “You can throw up all the odds against teams winning a seventh game on the road. But I went back and pulled up the ghosts of Celtics past in 1982.” To pull it off, Philly can’t afford a 15-turnover game like they posted in Game 5. JON MARKS

Philly still wants to fly The Sixers certainly don’t want to see Rajon Rondo out on the break like he did in Game 5 when he continously found Brandon Bass and Kevin Garnett for dunks and wide open jumpers. But Philly still wants to run themselves. “They took it to another level on defense (Monday) night and were able to get out on the break,” said point guard Jrue Holiday. JON MARKS

David Ortiz is hot at the plate and in front of a microphone these days.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 2012
More turmoil despite wins The Red Sox are currently playing their best baseball of the 2012 season. That doesn’t mean that everything is going swimmingly. Just as David Ortiz was getting overwhelming praise from media and fans for holding a players-only meeting, the Sox slugger lashed out with some choice words for reporters and even the Boston front office. “Well, let me tell you, I was reading an article (that) talked about the leaders people call ‘leaders’ in this town,” Ortiz told ESPNBoston.com. “Basically it seems like no matter what you do, it’s not good enough … And you can only call ‘leaders’ the guys who are out diving for balls on the field

or calling pitches behind the plate?” Ortiz seemed to be referencing the now-retired Jason Varitek and second baseman Dustin Pedroia all while taking a few jabs at 98.5 FM’s Tony Massarotti, who recently criticized Ortiz for waiting too long to hold a meeting. “I have always wondered whether or not he would really do this sort of thing,” Massarotti said on-air. “He‘s always been more the kind to put his arm around someone, pull them aside, ‘Hey what’s bothering you.’ Very empathetic, sympathetic, calm. He’s not the kind of guy to start flipping stuff over. If in this one he was pissed off ? Good. Someone in there needed to get pissed off a long time ago.”

MAXWELL'S GREEN
Forget triple-deckers Long live Maxwell’s Green! Development challenges old notions of Somerville It isn’t the traditional Davis Square apartment living, that’s for sure. Now leasing for summer occupation, Maxwell’s Green is about as far from the Somerville triple-decker as you can get. This massive 184-apartment development includes urbane amenities like an onsite yoga and fitness center, club suite, theater, cyber cafe, roof deck, underground bicycle storage and garage parking with electric car-charging stations. Location-wise, Maxwell’s Green is perfectly positioned by the community path, about a 10-minute walk from Davis Square and the Red Line T. Set around a common green, 62 units are currently up for leasing, with a further 122 units to be rolled out by the beginning of 2013. However, all exteriors and public spaces will be finished by initial move-in, so residents don’t have to live with dust and construction. “This is the first highly ‘amenitized’ development in the whole of Somerville,” says Kyle Warwick, principal for Gate Residential Properties,

which joined with KSS Realty to form Davis Square Partners for this venture. “Rents are competitive with Boston and Cambridge and the amenities outshine anything around here. We were able to do this because we had the space. It’s unique to find this large space in one of the densest cities in the world.” There’s a reason why the five-and-a-half acre land parcel was sitting vacant. The area was a Brownfield — that is, polluted postindustrial-use land that needed regulatory cleanup before it could be reused. “Residents didn’t like what was here before — an industrial wasteland,” says Warwick. “This development is good for Somerville as a whole.” LINDA LABAN

Lease now
There will be 184 apartments in Maxwell’s.
A Davis Square dwelling should have plenty of natural light, not just Natural Light.
At One Maxwell's Green, homes range from 495-square-foot studios at $1,831 per month to three-bed, two-bath townhouses at $3,975. Prospective renters take note, there are pet restrictions: Two pet maximum per apartment; dogs must be under 80 lbs.; cost for dogs is $60-$80 per month; cats are $35 per month.
Part of Maxwell’s Green includes a big common green in the center.

Floor-to-ceiling window treatments and painted moldings bring the eye up.
Up-and-coming interior designer Kyle Schuneman’s advice for maximizing small spaces Before and after
K
yle Schuneman wants to help you think inside the box — that is, the miniscule one-bedroom that commands half of your monthly income. Earlier this month, Hautelook.com asked the 26-year-old interior designer (recently named a “Tastemaker” by Los Angeles Magazine) to make over three typically small New York City apartments in his signature California style. The challenge, he said, was to conjure a coastal theme in a small space “without making it feel like a seafood restaurant.” Select items from these makeovers are on sale today and tomorrow at Hautelook.com. Schuneman, whose book “The First Apartment Book:
anyone specific and it just feels organic, then that’s really California for you. So the size constraints of the typical East Coast apartment aren’t a problem?
Kyle Schuneman shows an apartment some California love.
Cool Design for Small Spaces” publishes this August, chatted with us about how to invite some much-needed West Coast ease into our often-cramped East Coast quarters.
How do you define West Coast style?
I think it’s casual, I think it’s approachable. I think if you look at it and it’s effortless, and it doesn’t feel like it’s designed by
Not at all. California is full of an eclectic mix; I think it’s important to embrace that and find your own style. It’s all about feeling — if people stop by, they can come in and it’s warm and inviting. It doesn’t feel uptight. Can West Coasters take any tips from East Coasters?
You guys do crazy things with your storage, so I’ve learned a lot about using every nook and cranny. You have such beautiful architecture to pull from, but you don’t have the luxury of space. So you have a very struc-
More tips for tured approach to design, and I think that it can be really mixed well with California style at the same time. What inspired you to focus on small spaces?
I grew up in a 1,200-square-foot apartment with four people; my parents turned the master bedroom into another bedroom and turned the closet into my sister’s room. ... I think you guys have constraints, but they’re creative constraints. I think that having a box to work in is sometimes easier than having an unlimited space. Think from an architect’s point of view, start with function and build from there. REBECCA FINKEL letters@metro.us
tiny rooms:
1
“Everything has to function at least twice.” Choose furniture that also functions as storage.
2
“Think of your rug as your fifth wall.” Aggressive wall colors and patterns can make a small space feel smaller. Keep your walls neutral and go wild with your floor coverings.
3
“Bring the eye up.” What your apartment lacks in depth, it can usually make up for in height. Highlight decorative moldings and opt for floor-to-ceiling window treatments.
