Thousands of runners and walkers converged on the Esplanade yesterday for the 27th annual AIDS Walk Boston. The 6.2-mile walk and 5K race aimed to raise $1 million for AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, which supports those living with HIV/AIDS and gives to efforts to prevent the infection. The theme, From All Walks of Life, delivers a message that reflects the changing face of HIV/AIDS over the years and the reality that the disease affects individuals and families in all communities. What does big data know about you?
Trillions and trillions of gigabytes of info expected to be collected in one year Data not just coming from social networks and online purchases It’s likely that even after last week’s highly publicized announcement of multiple “Big Data” initiatives set to launch in Massachusetts, big data knows more about you than you know about it. “It does provide some imprint of an individual’s behavior,” said Dr. Bhabani Misra, a member of the team that runs the Center of Excellence for Big Data at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. “We all click on the Internet many, many times. As we click on many different sites, the clicks stream data.” Big data — or vast, complex data collections generated by businesses, social networking sites and online transactions — doesn’t just refer to a person’s digital fingerprint, like what someone posts to Twitter or buys online. It can even include
the tests doctors order for their patients that are then reported to health insurance companies. “We live in a world where there is a ton of data being collected about us,” said Sam Madden, the director of MIT’s new big data initiative at the school’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. “It’s when we talk about combining and correlat-
ing that data that it leads to applications that have value.” Madden said the team at MIT will begin working on projects that attempt to grasp big data collections and turn them into programs that has a general and useful purpose for a lot of people. However, one of the issues is privacy and security of the data. Madden said it’s partly a so-
cietal and policy problem based around how much information people are OK with putting up online about themselves. “There is value in sharing data, but at same time don’t want to compromise an individual’s information,” he said. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Data tsunami A report released this year by the Mass Technology Leadership Council said that one of the challenges of Big Data can be described in three words: volume, velocity and variety. The world will store
about 1,800 exabytes of digital data this year, a volume that is growing at a 60 percent compound annual growth rate, according to market research company International Data Corp. An Exabyte of data equals one trillion gigabytes. All of that data is generated at previously unfathomable speeds and
makes big data collection, processing and management a 24-hour, 7-days-per-week task, according to the report. The data is also comprised of structured data — such as online financial transactions — and unstructured data, including social media postings, audio and video files, etc. METRO/MN

Two cyclists hit in separate accidents A graduate student was killed and a doctor seriously injured in separate crashes this weekend that both involved the victims being hit by vehicles. Kelsey Rennebohm, a 28year-old graduate student at Boston College, was killed late Friday night when she and an MBTA bus were involved in crash at Huntington Avenue and Forsyth Street. She was pronounced dead on scene, police said. She was riding her bicycle along Huntington Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. when the crash occurred. Rennebohm was enrolled in BC’s counseling psychology program, according to the college. She worked as a Spanish teacher for two years in East Harlem, N.Y., before enrolling at Boston College. “Rennebohm was a gifted student and an experienced teacher who worked to provide high-quality instruction

and support services for all children,” Boston College said in a statement. It was unclear exactly how the crash occurred and city and Transit Police detectives were investigating. No violations were issued by press time yesterday. A T spokesman said the driver has not been disci-
plined, and there were not cameras on the bus. Boston College said they are providing assistance to those students who need it and knew Rennebohm. About an hour before that crash, a doctor riding his bicycle home to Boston from work was seriously injured when he was hit by a car that then left the scene. Dr. James Kolton, who works at Norwood Hospital, was riding home about 9 p.m. Friday when he was hit on Route 1A in Norwood, according to WBZ. The driver of the car that hit Kolton turned himself in to police Saturday and said he thought he hit something. He will likely be charged. Kolton suffered many broken bones, but he was expected to survive.

cided to drop rape charges against a Boston University hockey star. Max Nicastro, 22, was accused of sexually assaulting a female student in his dorm room in February. On Friday, prosecutors filed a document terminating prosecution. The Suffolk district attorney’s office said that after a three-month investigation and “comprehensive review” of the evidence, prosecutors determined they could not meet their burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. In March, prosecutors also dropped a charge of assault with intent to rape against Nicastro’s teammate, Corey Trivino, who still faces other charges in the case. The two incidents prompted university officials to examine the “culture and climate” of the men’s ice hockey team on campus. METRO/MN

Jean-Claude Trichet called last June for the creation of a European finance ministry with power over national budgets. The idea seemed fanciful, a distant dream that would take years or even decades to realize, if it ever came to be. One year later, with the euro zone’s debt crisis threatening to tear the bloc apart, Germany is pushing its partners for precisely the kind of giant leap forward in fiscal integration that the now-departed European Central Bank president had in mind. After falling short with her “fiscal compact on budget discipline, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is pressing for much more ambitious

carrying nearly 150 people crashed into a densely populated part of Lagos yesterday in what looked like a major disaster in Nigeria’s commercial hub. There was no early word from airline or civil aviation authority officials in the West African country on casualties. A source at the national emergency management agency, declining to be identified, said the aircraft belonged to privately owned domestic carrier Dana Air and had 147 people on board. Thousands of people crowded around the wreckage, which was billowing black smoke, in the Agege suburb of the city, not far from Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport. Witnesses said they saw the plane strike a building and burst into flames. Some looked stunned, while others took pictures with their mobile phones of the crash scene. REUTERS

Rain can’t stop Queen’s Jubilee Hundreds of thousands mark Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Brits were prepared for typical bad weather A traditional British rainstorm greeted the Queen’s Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant — but the weather did not stop the party. A flotilla of 1,000 boats accompanied Queen Elizabeth II on her six-mile journey down the river Thames, the largest ceremony the river has seen in 350 years. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the river, hoping to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty aboard the Spirit of Chartwell barge, in which the monarch rode alongside her husband, Prince Philip, and other members of the royal family. Some visitors had camped out overnight to secure good spots for the pag-

eant. They were joined by crowds of additional well-wishers throughout the day, and rooftops along the Thames were also covered with visitors. Amid torrential rain, visitors were entertained by music from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and nine other musical boats. The flotilla also in-
cluded dozens of military vessels and historic boats that had been restored for the event. As it passed Tower Bridge, it was greeted by a 41-gun salute from the Royal Navy. Event organizer Adrian Evans called the event “bigger and better” than any previous Thames celebration. More than £10 million — or $15.37 million — was spent on the operation. In addition to the pageant, an estimated 10,000 street parties took place across Britain, as many as celebrated Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. KIERON MONKS letters@metro.us

eventeen years ago, with her newborn daughter in tow, Tamsin HintonSmith began her undergraduate career at England’s University of Sussex. Today, Smith is a full-time professor there, where she also received her doctorate in sociology. But she fears that the support she received as a single parent in higher education is currently eroding as the U.K. moves toward a U.S.-style funding model. Her latest study — “Lone Parents’ Experiences as Higher Education Students: Learning to Juggle” — is one of the most comprehensive looks at single mothers in higher education to date, and one that could provide insight into the dilemmas of student moms and dads in the United States. “Universities need to do more to acknowledge that students have to balance paid work with their studies,” says Smith. “It’s very clear that the typical student is not a [privileged] young man with no responsibilities.” The “Lone Parents” study chronicled the lives of 77 college-enrolled single mothers across the U.K. Each woman was interviewed biweekly, and each had an opportunity to provide anonymous responses to questions regarding her struggles and personal victories. emerged: lack of time, childcare and resources among them. Interestingly, Smith discovered that prestigious institutions tended to be less single-parent-friendly. “This is really relevant to the U.S. because, like the U.K., [it stands] apart from the other wealthy countries in the way that lone parenthood has really been problematized and stigmatized as a social problem,” says Smith. “The cultures are similar in that lone parents have been blamed and chastised for their position. The important message in the data, for me, is that lone parents in college tend to be highly motivated people.” BRUCE WALSH

Despite their client’s history of drug abuse and saying “I do” to Charlie Sheen, lawyers for the sometimes-actress say the stay is a perfectly routine “pre-planned event,” and that reports of a crack-cocaine binge with her ex-husband are entirely false. In a Guys Choice display of manliness, Will Ferrell ate a very large hunk of dead animal while standing in front of a ring of fire.

music gained even a trace of long-lasting reverence on distant shores. The Clean — formed in Dunedin, New Zealand, by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour in 1978 — signed with Flying Nun Records. Even though their first single, “Tally Ho” hit the Top 20 in their home country in 1981, the band prematurely called it quits later that year. “Hamish and I have been slogging away for awhile,” notes guitarist David Kilgour. “When we hit that stride where we were releasing records, it was really intense. After those two years, we had to walk away from it, really. We were so busy.” During their hiatus, the Kilgours eventually learned that their influence was crossing continents — even if their records weren’t readily available overseas. Flying Nun quickly became the most important indie label in New Zealand music history, and The Clean was referenced as an influence for standout U.S. indie rock acts like Yo La Tengo and Pavement. “When The Clean first broke up in 1981, we had very little feedback from the rest of the world,” says Kilgour. “It seemed to be a word-of-mouth thing. ... Forced out of work before their time, many older Americans are finding new careers.
Older Americans learning new trades in a tough market When Joe Burklund of Des Moines, Iowa, lost his job at the depths of recession in 2009 after 30 years in the advertising and marketing industry, he never imagined another career. He was almost 60 and optimistic he would land another job in his field, where he was earning $65,000 a year. After collecting unemployment checks for a year, Burklund took a parttime job at grocery chain Trader Joe's. As he watched his retirement savings bleed almost dry, he realized his situation would not turn around anytime soon. An acquaintance suggested he train for call center work, servicing banks and insurance companies. “I said, ‘Well, I may as well try that because nothing else seems to be working,’” Burklund told Reuters. Thousands of Americans aged 55 and older are going back to school and reinventing themselves to get an edge in a difficult labor market, hoping to rebuild retirement nest eggs that were almost destroyed by the recession. “I went into it thinking, ‘I am not too sure I am cut out for call center work,’ and I never really wanted to sell insurance. But I was willing to try anything to gain full employment,” says Burklund, who has set aside hopes to retire at 65. Within two weeks of completing the program, he had three interviews and two job offers. In March, he started working at Marsh Insurance. REUTERS
How to tell when you need a vacation
IS STOCK
Think it’s just a bad case of the Mondays? Sometimes taking time off can help you perform better on the job But make sure that your vacation is truly a vacation
V
acations: We always want one, but sometimes we actually need one. Here’s our rundown of telltale signs that you’re in need of some welldeserved time off.
Your attitude is poor. “Do you find yourself getting short-tempered with the nicest person in the office?” asks Marc Cenedella, CEO of jobmatching site The Ladders. If so, ask yourself if those people deserve to put up with that.
You are less productive. This may come as no surprise, but many Type A personalities tend to work without vacation — and without realizing that it can affect their productivity. “If you notice that you need to take a lot of breaks to accomplish work, that is a sign that the current demands on you are exceeding your resources,” says Amy Przeworski, assistant professor in psychology at Case Western Reserve University.
You dream about quitting. “This is obviously a sign that you are dissatisfied with your job,” says Przeworski. “But before you jump ship, try taking a vacation or a day off to see if maybe you just needed a break and some self-care instead of a new position.” The last thing you want is a permanent vacation. Do you really need to take that laptop with you?
Your time off Kerry Patterson, co-author of “Crucial Conversations,” reminds us that we must “de-
fine vacation” to ourselves and to our bosses. “Talk about what it truly means to take time off. If you are required to take the office
with you in the form of emails and conference calls, you never truly leave the office.” After you get the time off, don’t spend it answering e-mails from a beach.
Occupational therapists: A special breed INGRAM PUBLISHING
With a growth rate of 33 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupational therapy is one of few indemand professions in this brutal economy. Dr. Joyce Sabari has been an OT for 39 years and is the program director of the occupational therapy program at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, N.Y. She says that many students are attracted to the field because of the current job growth numbers, but there are key qualities that every OT must possess. Who should consider a career in occupational therapy? Occupational therapy is holding strong. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median income for occupational therapists in 2010 was $72,320.
People who get excited by forming collaborative relationships with their clients. We don’t prescribe anything. We work with people to choose a strategy that they can buy into.
Getting certified All occupational therapists working in the United States must obtain a master’s degree in occupational therapy and pass the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapists. The American Occupational Therapy Association lists all accredited OT master’s programs in the country.
OTs tend to be very collaborative. They have enormous emotional intelligence. They have a talent for coaching — so much of what we do is motivating people to try new things. What’s the difference between an occupational therapist and a physical therapist?
They are completely separate
professions, although we often have common goals and occasionally work together. The focus of occupational therapy is the performance of tasks of daily living, from getting out of bed to using a computer, depending on the needs of that particular person. The focus in physical therapy is mostly on getting a person to walk better. Why is the job outlook for occupational therapists currently so good?
Part of it is society’s attitudes about people with disabilities. There is a general understanding now that, with some help, people with disabilities can return to very functional lives. A second factor is the aging population. A third is a greater appreciation for the inclusion of children with disabilities. BRUCE WALSH

Are you normal?
Psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert has help for the socially anxious and those offended by unpleasantries Is it normal that I get upset when people around me use vulgar language? Yes, it’s normal to get upset over vulgar language. Even though cursing is part of our vernacular, it doesn’t mean it has to be accepted or liked. Do understand that getting others to change how they speak is a difficult task. I can’t enter a crowded room without getting freaked out. Is that normal? No, that’s not normal, but it’s not that uncommon either. What you’re describing could
be symptoms of an anxiety disorder like agoraphobia or social anxiety. The former is when attacks of intense anxiety occur because there’s a fear of being in places where escape might be difficult or help might not be available. The latter is when a person has an excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations. Anxiety and self-consciousness stem from a fear of being judged or criticized by others. We subsidize rich, punish the poor Republicans oppose welfare to the poor, claiming it subsidizes laziness and failure. Meanwhile, they approve government subsidizing of fossil fuel industries and agribusiness by failing to hold them responsible for completely cleaning up all the pollution they cause. If government required them to pay the true full cost, they would have to charge customers directly. No one would want to pay that, and they would go bankrupt; green industries would have a fair chance to rise, and the poor would have a chance to gain a foothold. Only in a truly level playing field can capitalism work to the good of all. Justice requires that you bail out everyone or no one. RITA VARLEY, VIA E-MAIL

Men, take long look at mirror on the wall RE: “SNOW WHITE WITH BITE”:
Professor Zipes’ interpretation of the “Snow White” story reads as though he watched the Disney movie, barely paid attention because his Swedish Fish were stuck in his teeth, and scribbled his theory on a napkin. First of all, having a female villain is no more sexist toward women than having a male villain is sexist to-
ward men. There are good and bad examples of both genders; equality goes both ways. Second of all, if Zipes had cared to read the original adaptation of “Snow White,” he’d realize that rather than being a celebration of beauty as a vital characteristic of femininity, it is a vindication of vanity and covetousness. It speaks very strongly and in few uncertain terms about shallow, aesthetic judgment being a negative thing.
Church hypocrisy is bad for democracy
ROXANNE MICHAUD, VIA E-MAIL
It is very hard to make a point about feminism and gender primacy while employing the help of a male feminism theorist. His claim that creating an evil female character is antifeminist is absurd. Feminism is meant to establish a mindset where gender is a nonessential trait. Meaning
The arrogance of organized religion never ceases to disgust me. The Catholic Church has taken to suing the Obama administration because they feel that having insurance companies pay for birth control is violating their religious freedom. Yet they see nothing wrong with continuing the push for taxpayer money to be funneled toward religious education in the form of vouchers. The fact that the church continues talking out of both sides of its mouth is downright pathetic.

SECOND-HALF STRUGGLE

OT IN THE ECF
Rajon Rondo hit one of two free throws with 21 seconds remaining and Dwyane Wade barely missed a game-winning 3-pointer as the Celtics hung on. Mickael Pietrus’ two offensive rebounds with under two minutes left in the overtime allowed the Celtics to drain the clock as they desperately hung on to a 92-91 lead. LeBron James fouled out with 1:51 re-
maining in overtime and Paul Pierce fouled out early in the OT, much like he did in Game 2.
Paul Pierce goes strong to the bucket last night against LeBron James and the Heat.
That first-quarter success that the Celtics had? Forget about it. It was the Heat who came out in the third quarter looking as if they knew it was a big Game 4. Miami outscored Boston 21-12 in the third quarter, taking most of the momentum with them into the fourth. Pierce and Rondo ran into foul trouble, which meant more time for the bench. Mickael Pietrus had a chance to put the C’s up 10 with under a minute to play, but he missed both free throws. Wade made him pay
GREAT STARTS
Offense has generally been hard to come by for the Boston Celtics, but it has seemed to pick up as of late against the Heat. In the first half of Game 4, it looked to be at or near its best. The Celtics dropped 61 points on the Heat in the first half, taking a 14point lead into the third quarter. They shot 49 percent from the field, with Pierce leading the way at 18 points in that half. Thomas gone wild Tim Thomas has seemingly played his last game in a Bruins uniform. It's looking more and more like he may never play hockey again. One year ago, Thomas was at the top of the hockey world and was, arguably, the most
revered athlete in North American professional sports. Sunday, as had been rumored in the last week, Thomas declared on his Facebook page that he will take a year off from hockey: "From the earliest age I can remember, I've wanted to be a
hockey player. I've been blessed in my life to not only be able to live that dream, but to achieve more than I ever thought possible ... At the age of 38, I believe it is time to put my time and energies into those areas and relationships that I have neg-
lected. That is why at this time I feel the most important thing I can do in my life is to reconnect with the three F's. Friends, Family, and Faith. This is what I plan on doing over the course of the next year.” MATT BURKE

man Kevin Youkilis. Youkilis, from the start, seems to have never been in the good graces of manager Bobby Valentine. And with Boston closing in on the AL East lead (2.5 games out as of yesterday afternoon), there seems to have been a shift toward giving players like Will Middlebrooks, Nick Punto and Mike Aviles more at-bats. Youkilis struck out twice yesterday in Toronto and was plunked in the helmet by Blue Jays pitcher Drew Hutchison.

The Red Sox seem to be playing just fine with “the new guard in place. While the stench of last September is just now finally evaporating into the air above Yawkey Way, Boston looks to be ready to trade one of the key faces from the Franconaera. CBSSports.com reported yesterday that the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks are among teams interested in trading for third/first base-
