More than 100 Hubway stations are expected to be open by the end of the summer with service expanding beyond Boston for the first time. Stations are expected to be in operation in Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville in the coming months, according to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council. A high school sophomore was fatally shot on porch Sunday night Senior at the same school was critically injured School officials say girls were ‘happy, intelligent’ A Cambridge community is grieving and in shock after a pair of teenage girls were shot, one fatally, on a Cambridge Street Sunday night. Authorities said Charlene Holmes, 16, was killed in the gunfire. The other girl, who friends and school officials identified as 17-year-old Thanialee Cotto-Felix, was in critical condition. The girls were both students at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School. Holmes was a sophomore and Cotto is a senior who was scheduled to graduate Thursday. While authorities released few details about the shooting, the girls’ friends said they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. “She didn’t deserve nothing to happen to her,” Fernando Martins said of Holmes. Martins said he knew Cotto from school and Holmes from the neighborhood. “She was a good girl. She was outgoing. She liked to dance,” he said of Cotto. Police were called to 34-36 Willow St. just after 8 p.m. for reports of a shooting. When officers arrived they found the two girls with gunshot wounds, according to the Middlesex district attorney’s

office. Authorities said the girls were sitting on a porch when the shots rang out. A makeshift memorial consisting of candles and a pair of stuffed bears holding a heart was set up in front of the three-story home where the shooting took place. Glass on the front door to the home was partially broken as police walked in and out of the house yesterday. Jaaron McKinney stopped by the scene yesterday morning. He said he was there last night when the shooting took place and knew the girls from school. McKinney said he saw Holmes lying on the ground after the shooting. “It was shocking just to see her body like that,” McKinney said. “I looked at her once and I couldn't do it ... I couldn't do anything but cry.” McKinney said he believed the girls were in the wrong place at the wrong time. No arrests have been made and police were still investigating. ers lauded the city's first green skyscraper for earning recognition as a LEED designated building. Boston Properties’ Atlantic Wharf building was designated LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council, the city announced yesterday. The building on the waterfront features innovative rain-

water storage and reuse systems, energy conserving plumbing systems, green roofs and a green daylighting design. At the event, Mayor Thomas Menino also announced the creation of a Building Energy Disclosure Ordinance that will have the largest commercial and residential buildings report annual energy use. Logan Airport experienced some delays yesterday not because of weather, but because of a runaway sailboat. The unmanned 37-foot sailboat broke free from its Winthrop mooring and ran aground off of a runway of the East Boston airport, according to Logan. A runway was briefly closed until crews were able to reach the sailboat and remove its mast from being a disruption. METRO

cisco arrested six women last month, including two women who were wanted in Boston for allegedly hypnotizing an elderly woman and taking her money. Boston police said that in April a 57-year-old Cantonese-speaking woman told them she was approached by three other Asian women in Chinatown. The women allegedly hypnotized her and convinced her to hand over $160,000 and jewelry, police said. Two of the women were arrested May 10 in San Francisco as part of a larger group of women who committed a similar scheme on dozens of women in that city’s Chinatown neighborhood. The group of six women are accused of bilking about $800,000 from Asian women as part of a scheme that involved the removal of evil spirits. GLOBE/METRO

Health officials joined Menino yesterday in kicking off Fitness on the Plaza, a summerlong program that offers free yoga and boot camp classes on the plaza. The program is part of Boston Moves for Health, an ambitious campaign to reduce obesity in Boston by giving people access to free and low-cost

fitness activities. “We’ll all be out there doing our exercises, and I’ll be there also, as soon as I get my clearance. But I’m getting there,” said Menino, who underwent knee surgery in 2010. Instructors from Beantown Bootcamp and Health Yoga Life were on hand yesterday to lead dozens of motivated Bostonians in breathing, stretching and booty-shaking exercises. “I think it’s going to be a challenging goal,” said John Wayman, founder of Beantown Bootcamp. “But I think that with the right direction, and the message being about consistency and nutrition, I really believe it is possible.”

Menino said yesterday that he is willing to join his fellow Bostonians and step up to the fitness challenge. “I’ve tried yoga once, and it was interesting. I’m getting over my knee injury, but I’ll try yoga again,” he said. Technically, Menino did a little yoga during yesterday’s kickoff event, when Health Yoga Life co-founder Vyda Bielkus led the crowd in a breathing exercise that asked everyone to raise and lower their arms. BU student takes Miss USA title The Rhode Island native just finished her sophomore year at Boston University Five things to know about the new Miss USA, Olivia Culpo Boston University student Olivia Culpo just finished her sophomore year; more significantly, the 20-year-old just won the Miss USA competition. Culpo, who was Miss Rhode Island, won Sunday night’s competition and beat out 50 other contestants, including Miss Washington, D.C. She will now compete in the Miss Universe contest later this year. Culpo was flying to New York City yesterday from Las Vegas where the pageant was held. Besides being a student at BU, Culpo describes herself on her Twitter page as a “cellist, nerd, model, actress ... movielover, health freak.� She posted an excited message on Twitter shortly after the pageant. “Finally have my phone! I can not get over this night!!!

Thank you so much everyone! Shout out to all the beautiful @MissUSA contestants,� Culpo tweeted. Her win created excitement among the BU community, which flooded Twitter with messages of a fellow Terrier capturing the Miss USA crown. “Miss USA is a #BU sophomore! Blackwater men lose Iraq deaths appeal The Supreme Court yesterday rejected an appeal by four Blackwater security guards who argued prosecutors made improper use of their statements to investigators in charging them with killing 14 Iraqi civilians in 2007.

The justices refused to review a ruling by a U.S. appeals court in Washington, D.C., that reinstated the criminal charges against the guards for their roles in the Baghdad shooting that outraged Iraqis. Jerry Sandusky’s alleged sex abuse victims will not be allowed to use fake names to hide their identities during his criminal trial, a Pennsylvania judge ruled yesterday. Prosecutors charge that Sandusky, 68, had sex with 10 boys over a 15-year period. Four of those boys — numbers 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 — filed motions last week asking for permission to use pseudonyms when the trial begins. But Judge John Cleland said he couldn’t allow their identities to be hidden during the trial. “Secrecy is thought to be inconsistent with the openness required to assure the public that the law is being administered fairly and applied faithfully,” Cleland wrote in his order dismissing the request. “It is argued in the motions that for an alleged victim of a sexual assault to fulfill that re-

I completely support Laura’s choice to be any way she wishes to be. What I’m really surprised about is the amount of attention it’s gotten, with raised eyebrows. I mean, my God, it’s 2012. Are we really that uptight? People are so easily scandalized. She’s such a beautiful person, and unbelievable musician. She has a beautiful family, and the band is so gifted and has amazing connection. He’s very special. She’s very special. I absolutely respect her wishes. It’s beautiful. The tour in some ways has been a well-kept secret. The people who are being rewarded are the ones coming to the shows. The people who saw her perform that first night saw something truly exceptional.

On ‘Choice of Weapon,’ The Cult create a muscular, apocalyptic sound with all the ingredients for a classic Ian Astbury on super-predators In Chinese astrology, Ian Astbury is a tiger. “A tiger moving through the forest,” the singer for The Cult clarifies. “That’s a hunting tiger.” Astbury pauses before finishing the ethos by which he stakes his live performance: “I like the idea of waiting for your prey in the shadow, and then striking at the right moment.” The right moment has come yet again for The Cult, the veteran U.K. band whose icon status is once again reaffirmed with last month’s release of “Choice of Weapon.” Braiding the disparate strains of predecessors like Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, David Bowie and The Doors with the aesthetics of Native American mystics, The Cult’s near-30year sound continues to mature on the new release.

“Choice of Weapon” hits an elusive sweet-spot where an established band can brandish experience without rehashing old successes — and where the physical and artistic results of age become a sharpening stone upon which their music is honed. Against the familiar chorus-drenched riffing of founding guitarist Billy Duffy and the hammering rhythm of drummer John Tempesta and bassist Chris

Wyse, Astbury’s unmistakable voice — a liquid vibrato thrown against weather-beaten leather — has rarely sounded better. There’s a throatier character to it and a lot more low-end. Astbury calls it finesse. “When you’re a kid and you go out there, you’re incredibly earnest,” he says. “Your adrenals are screaming. And when you’re in front of an audience, when you get out there for the first time, it can be so incredibly overwhelming and exciting and you respond to that. But over a period of time, you begin to understand the finesse, the control, how to really ground yourself as a performer. And after that, you can really get so much more out of different energies.” Astbury talks a lot about energies, not unlike the

Native American imagery that dots his lyrics, informs his fashion and has appeared on many of his band’s album covers. When he discusses today’s musical landscape and the influence of classic rock bands on his own group, he talks like a chief who has woefully watched others taint the beautiful terrain. “We were lucky enough to be on the tail end of the great superpredators,” he says. “We kind of got around before the land was turned into mega churches and strip malls, we got to experience the wide open spaces, and see some of those performers in their prime. It really had a major effect on plugging into an original source, which allows us to create in the way we have.” JIM FENNER

Budding starlet Louise Brooks and her chaperone Cora Kaufmann aren’t in Kansas anymore In Laura Moriarty’s ‘The Chaperone,’ the unlikely pair head to the Big Apple in search of their respective fortunes Flapper-era film actress Louise Brooks infamously couldn’t be controlled, even at 15. But don’t expect “The Chaperone” — in part based on Brooks’ biographies — to be a “Taming of the Shrew” adaptation. Author Laura Moriarty’s fictional account of Cora — a middle-aged housewife who accompanies the would-be star from Wichita, Kansas, to a New York City dance audition in 1922 — is instead a tale of self-discovery and self-preservation. Although the unlikely pair’s escape from the doldrums of Midwestern life is mutually beneficial, what Cora yields from their turbulent relationship is invaluable: the courage to think rationally and see things the way they are, rather than accept what she’s been taught. Sincere and

engrossing, the novel has already been optioned for film by “Downton Abbey” actress Elizabeth McGovern. We talk with Moriarty about how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Do you agree with Cora that spending time with younger folks is a “big payoff for all the pain”? I teach, so I spend a lot of time with people who are 19 to 25. I’m 42 — that’s about the age difference between Cora and Louise. [Students] can be so maddening and rude. Louise is terrible to Cora but it’s an admission worth paying for. I’ve tapped into Cora’s feelings by having felt similarly. I notice professors in their 70s or 80s. They’re more engaged and current, because they’re constantly interacting with young people. It keeps you young.

be punished or labeled for. Then [the issue came up] in 2012! The reason Cora can’t talk to her doctor about her body — 100 years later, it’s the same. And with her marriage — we have this nostalgic view of the past, like everybody was the Waltons. There were gay people then, too. How many generations had to hide who they were and make crazy arrangements to make things work? We have no idea when we look at sepia-toned family portraits. Relationships were probably more complicated than anyone knew. Cora seeks her identity in NYC, a place where she’s alone and unable to seek validation from friends, family or even Louise.

In a place where no one has any former impressions of you, you can really be whoever you are. It’s liberating — but it’s also frightening, because so much of our identities are rooted in how other people see us. As difficult as [Cora’s] time in New York is, it’s the difficulties that make her grow. I didn’t want the book to be about Louise teaching Cora to be free. dealing with the problem of barriers faced by single student moms seeking a college education, I wonder who created this educational problem. It is nice to know that the author of this study herself went from being a single-mom student to being a university professor, but for the majority of moms it is not possible to sustain college studies and raising a baby simultaneously. Whose fault is this overload of responsibilities? Is it the schools of higher learning or is the individual raising a child alone? I am glad to see single moms trying to go to school with newborns, but the difficulties presented in such an effort fall on the individual. Why is society responsible when college students find it difficult to take classroom work? I wonder what role the student needs to acknowledge in how they found themselves in their predicament in the first place. Bad choices produce consequences that make life more difficult, don’t they?

When the Celtics face off against the Heat tonight in Miami for Game 5, there could be an unfamiliar face to the series starting for the Heat: Chris Bosh. Bosh has missed the last nine games with an abdominal strain suffered in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Although he hasn’t been active for any games of the Eastern Conference finals, that’s not stopping Doc Rivers and the Celtics from preparing for him. For that reason, they aren’t worried about his return. “We have [prepared for him] every game,� Rivers said. “So we don’t have to do anything different. We prepare every game like Bosh is going to play, and eventually he will and it may be (tonight).� The Heat have obviously
