People waited for nearly an hour for a taste.
Two years ago, food trucks were a rare find on Boston’s streets. But those days might as well be ancient history as the practice of serving up gourmet meals on wheels has virtually exploded since then. The success of the Hub’s food truck industry was evidenced in the 5,000 foodies gathered at UMass Boston yesterday, some of whom waited as long as 45 minutes for their tiny paper baskets of delicious-smelling cuisine from some of the region’s most acclaimed food trucks. “This is not a fad, it’s a trend,” said Janet Prensky, of Food Truck Festivals of New England. “Food trucks are literally hot right now, and I think people are catching on, and it’s here to stay.” Prensky said it is not only the convenience of grabbing a bite on the go, but also the

Brian Carey brought his family up from Cape Cod for the festival and, although he does not typically have access to food trucks, he said he understands the allure. “If I worked in the city, I think it would be appealing. Instead of going out to lunch, I wouldn’t object to going to a food truck, especially one of these here today. Some of the food on these trucks is fantastic,” he said, adding his favorite was Big Moe’s M&M Ribs. “When I was living in Arizona, truck cuisine was really popular,” said Jill Carreiro, who stopped by the festival with her family. “You could go and get really great, unique food. Two former Auburn University football players and another man were shot dead and three people including a current player were wounded when an argument at a pool party at an off-campus apartment complex escalated, police said yesterday. Two of those shot to death, Edward Christian and Ladarious Phillips, both 20, played for Auburn previously. A current member of the team, Eric Mack, also 20, was wounded and admitted to East Alabama Medical Center. His condition was not released. The third fatality was Demario Pitts, 20, police said. Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson identified the suspect as 22-year-old Desmonte Leonard of Montgomery, Alabama’s capital, and said he was being sought on three counts of capital murder.

Leonard fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Caprice with two other men, who were considered “persons of interest,” Dawson said, declining to identify them. The vehicle was found abandoned in nearby Macon County. U.S. Marshals and the FBI were aiding the investigation, Dawson told a news conference.
Police received a call reporting shots fired at 10:03 p.m. Saturday and Christian was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two men fatally shot died at the hospital. A fifth victim was treated and released. The sixth was airlifted to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, Dawson said. He was in critical condition yesterday. “This is a tragic day for the Auburn family,” Mayor Bill Ham Jr. said. “It’s just beyond my capacity to understand. It’s senseless.” Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said the county, which includes Auburn, typically suffers annual homicides “in the single digits.” “This is pretty much unprecedented,” Jones said.

President Barack Obama’s chief political strategist, David Axelrod, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney “is living on a different planet” because he opposes the Obama administration’s plan to create more
jobs for teachers, firefighters and policemen. The administration is seeking to recover from a week of economic and political developments that put the president on the defensive and complicated his reelection campaign. These included a June 1 report that the unemployment rate increased in May, the failure of Democrats and unions in a
recall vote against Republican Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin and accusations of leaking classified information on cyberattacks and drone strikes. Obama also opened himself to Republican attacks by saying “the private sector is doing fine” during a White House news conference June 8. He later clarified his remarks. BLOOMBERG

A ‘sense of belonging’ found to be crucial to campus diversity The numbers Dr. Terrell L Strayhorn points to are stark and, at the very least, troubling. Here’s just one example: Of the 18 million college students in the United States today, only about 3 percent of them are African-American men. Of those, a disproportionate amount of them attend nonselective institutions. Since 2006, Strayhorn has been investigating diversity and inclusion in higher education, producing dozens of studies funded by the Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, Ohio State University and the University of Tennessee. No matter his starting point — from LGBT groups to Latino
Strayhorn
men — Strayhorn found his research pointing to a crucial theme: the deeply ingrained desire of students to simply feel that they belong in their college environment. This month Routledge will publish Strayhorn’s “College
Students’ Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success for All Students,” representing the most comprehensive look at what is perhaps the most significant factor in educational diversity. “This is not an esoteric construct just for college students. In fact, this a basic need that is expressed by Maslow. We really can’t access higher order needs, like love and affection, without feeling this sense of belonging,” says Strayhorn, from his office at the University of Ohio. “We’ve always thought of this as a kind of soft variable that you can’t really measure, but I argue it can be measured quite consistently. And, when it is measured, it has a powerful in-
fluence on the kinds of outcomes all of us care about.” Strayhorn also argues that, largely, institutions have attempted to address this issue with ineffective, overly broad programs. “This data gives me an opportunity to speak to the educational community: If our national imperative is to have more people get in and out of college, then we have to be very intentional about providing the kind of support students need,” says Strayhorn. “That’s not a broad-based oneshot approach. It needs to be specifically targeted.” BRUCE WALSH

Why study the sex lives of worms? The award is named with a nod to the Golden Fleece Awards, which the late Sen. William Proxmire gave to highlight what he regarded as silly research. One of Proxmire’s Golden Fleeces went to scientists researching the sex life of screwworms. It turns out that the screwworm is a deadly cattle pest, and the research ultimately saved the American cattle industry billions of dollars. Sen. Lindsay Lohan’s car crash still happening Lindsay Lohan got into a nasty
car accident in L.A. during the weekend, and because this is Lindsay Lohan, things are far from over. The actress, who was driving, initially claimed that an 18wheeler cut off her black Porsche, causing her to slam into the back of it and total her car. We’re not sure if the photos of the damage match up to this story — we’re not even sure we’ve ever seen a car this expensive before — but the driver of the truck tells TMZ that Lohan, who was speeding, caused the crash, then attempted to leave the scene while her assistants negotiated a bribe and removed her belongings from the

Lindsay, we realize you did not have a normal adolescence, so allow us to explain how this works: When you irresponsibly smash up an expensive car that isn’t yours, the correct response is to cry, call your mom and say “officer” a lot. The city of ’Roo Dust and mud-filled Tennessee festival mixes rock, electro and the requisite jam bands for die-hard fans ALL PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
Early Sunday morning, much of the most populated farm in Tennessee was lit up by the piercing beats of brostep king Skrillex. For just one long weekend, New York City had some unlikely competition for the “city that never sleeps”: the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Bonnaroo’s strong suit is in its diversity — while the ever prevalent folkies got their fix from the banjo-totin’ Trampled By Turtles, comedy lovers saw hot act Aziz Ansari and fans of female indie pop swooned to Feist’s sweet voice. And that was just the docket for early evening on Friday. While the first of the festival headliners didn’t perform until Friday night, buzz rock band Alabama Shakes easily set the stage Thursday evening as lead singer Brittany Howard showcased her soulful voice. On Friday, the first full day of the festival, it became apparent that only the most grizzled music aficionados frequent these dust and mud-filled fields. Merrill Garbus of tUnEyArDs continued the string of edgy girl-fronted acts early afternoon, leading up to ’Roo faves The Avett Brothers and

their catchy folk rock. After Feist showed her hippie spirit and Foster the People pumped up the jams, Radiohead took to the main stage for an admirable appearance. Thom Yorke and his boys from Britain lived up to the hype, intermingling more jammy electro material from their latest release, “King of Limbs,” with older hits like “Karma Police.” “Where are you guys sleeping tonight?” front man Thom Yorke asked the crowd midway through the set. “In a field, face down in the mud? That’s what we do in Britain.” Saturday was just as packed
A tent city Pass the guy hawking glass pipes, make a left at the pizza place and fall asleep on the corner of Walnut Drive and Northam Street — in a tent in the middle of a field. The 70-plus camping areas that tens of thousands of music fans called home for four days created a temporary midsized city, complete with gridded streets, hundreds of food options and acres of makeshift stores selling clothes and goods. It’s surprising that Bonnaroo city is only here for four days.
with must-see sets, showcasing electropop act Santigold, Donald Glover’s solo rap act Childish Gambino, and a reunion of roots rock group Dispatch. Their well-known song “The General” was one of the best performances at Bonnaroo, starting a crowdrousing sing-along. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phish headlined Saturday and Sunday, respectively, while another marquee highlight came from the Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary set. CHRIS LEO PALERMINO letters@metro.us

How to trust your intuition W
e all have the power of intuition working through us at all times. Our intuition is a kind, loving inner voice that guides us toward positive actions and peaceful outcomes. Often inspiration shows up as a strong gut knowing. Sometimes intuitive guidance comes through as a powerful feeling of inspiration or even a tingly sensation. We all have this inner guidance system, but many of us disconnect from it. If we want to trust our intuition we must release all disbelief and heighten our awareness of our inner voice. How we block our intuition: The

itive guidance. Then fear leads us to overthink and start future-tripping negative outcomes. All of these blocks disconnect us from our intuitive guide within. How
practical world around us doesn’t support our creative capacity to connect to our inner guidance system. When we get hooked into our to-do lists and daily duties we lose track of our intuitive flow. Another block is fear. Whenever fear arises we cut off communication to our inner guide. Thoughts like “I can’t” or “there’s no way” block us from creative ideas and intu-

the
blocks:
Releasing these blocks helps us realign with our intuition. We must awaken a practice of tuning in to our inner voice through meditation and stillness. You can begin this practice with two minutes of stillness each morning. Sit comfortably in silence and connect to your breath. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. When two minutes are up take note
of whatever your intuition tells you and write it in a notebook. Trust your first instinct. For one week, document the intuition that comes through after your two minutes of stillness. At the end of the week, reread what you’ve documented. It’s likely that you’ll see patterns and guidance that may not have come through without this stillness practice. Take this exercise into your day-to-day life: The more you practice listening to your intuition, the more you’ll trust its loving guidance. — Gabrielle Bernstein is the author of “Spirit Junkie.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

How ‘airplane mode’ can help keep you grounded
CREATAS IMAGES
Is your smartphone actually making you less productive? Productivity guru Maura Nevel Thomas thinks so How to stay focused in a wireless world Maura Nevel Thomas founded RegainYourTime.com over nine years ago. Her latest book, “Personal Productivity Secrets,” is part of Wiley’s “Secrets” series. Much of the book is devoted to navigating the pitfalls of wireless distractions. Why is the term “time management” outdated in your view?
Before we had so much technology — and the distractions caused by it — when you devoted your time to something, you could reasonably expect that that was the only task you were going to focus on. But now we all carry the world in our pocket. So it’s not a given that just because you devote time to something you will have the experience you intended. What if we are expected to keep our phones on in order to run our business — or even keep our job?
It’s interesting that you phrased the question in terms of expectations, because that is what it’s about. If people expect you to respond instantly, it’s
Thomas
probably because you set that expectation yourself. If you typically respond to your e-mails immediately, then people will come to expect that you will respond to them immediately. So it’s a matter of resetting the expectations. There are people whose jobs are about emergency response. Otherwise, being constantly reactive is detrimental to productivity. Is it just a matter of turning off the phone?
There are many strategies. Really what it’s about is mak-
ing sure you control your technology instead of it controlling you. I know a lot of people who keep their phone on vibrate at all times. While you’re valuing the idea of not interrupting someone else, you’re still interrupting yourself every hour of the day. Personally, I like ‘airplane mode.’ You have access to the technology you need, but you’re cut off from Internet activity. BRUCE WALSH

A health care career may be close at hand DAVID DE LOSSY
If you assume that a career in health care means either being a doctor or nurse, it’s time you rethought the field. With advances in technology and medicine, plus the growth of the elderly population, the health care job market is only as limited as your imagination. Stephanie Donovan, faculty chair of health programs at Peirce College in Philadelphia, suggests that job seekers go beyond the norm and look into what’s known as allied health. “These roles can be described as the supportive patient services that complement medicine and nursing,” she says. “According to the Association

Just ask the the 23 million Americans out of work and looking for a job. We now have the longest period of 8-plus percent unemployment since the great depression. The future is
NOW 3 Avery Bradley, Rajon Rondo will be featured in the Celtics backcourt for years to come Where will the Celtics find their ‘Bigs’ and will KG return?
3
Cup finals
Devils-Kings suddenly a contest
Avery Bradley is poised to take Ray Allen’s spot in the starting lineup for good in 2012-13.
SUMMER MOVES FOR C’S
1
Re-sign KG
We learned a lot about the 2011-12 Boston Celtics: Their resiliency, their heart, their willingness to work, and the fact that they do have a lot of basketball left in them. Nobody embodies all of those things more than Kevin Garnett, who is now an unrestricted free agent. Garnett could retire, but if the C’s approach him with a contract and plan to remain contenders, he might bite. With Dwight Howard under contract with Orlando, Garnett very well could be the best available big man in this year’s free agent class. The C’s have a huge advantage because they have the money to spend this summer and Garnett seemingly now loves Boston. A one-year deal would be ideal for both sides.
2
More BIGS
Going into next season, the C’s have just one big man under contract, JaJuan Johnson, and another due a $1.03 million qualifying offer, Greg Stiemsma. We already talked about KG returning, but as we saw this season, the C’s were beaten badly when he was out of the game. If Garnett is to return, he can’t play 35 to 40 minutes as he was in the 2012 postseason. So who is out there to help? Chris Wilcox could be back on short money. How about Mr. Kardashian himself, Kris Humphries? Other options are New Orleans’ Carl Landry and Chris Kaman — and don’t forget the draft, as Boston has the 21st and 22nd picks in a deep field.
3
Rondo’s team
It’s been said numerous times: “The torch has been passed to Rajon Rondo.” This time, it’s for real. It was Rondo who established himself as the best player on the Celtics in the postseason. Yes, KG was probably more consistent, but Rondo showed that he should be talked about as one of the best guards in the league. It’s time for the C’s to stop shopping him, and instead find pieces that compliment his game. They’ll certainly need a shooter like a Ray Allen (good luck finding a young one of that quality), but the C’s need to bring in guys that can run with Rondo and Avery Bradley on the break.
GETTY IMAGES
Rajon Rondo has the keys to the C’s future.
The longer this thing goes, the more the pressure shifts to Los Angeles. The Kings, who once led the Stanley Cup finals 3-0 over the Devils, have dropped two straight games. The series is 3-2, as the action heads back to Hollywood tonight for Game 6. Only two teams that dug an 0-3 hole in the Cup finals have reached a Game 6. Only one — the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs — have hoisted the Cup. Adding even more pressure is the fact that Los Angeles has never won the Stanley Cup in the club’s 45year history. “This is the Stanley Cup final, it isn’t supposed to be easy,” said the Kings’ Justin Williams. “This is a grind. They’re a heck of a team over there with a lot of character and a lot of grit.” That grit has some in the New Jersey locker room thinking that a historic comeback is very possible. They believe in themselves. For now, though, the Devils are just taking it one day at a time.

Nava’s wild MLB month Daniel Nava could possibly compete for starting job if his recent hot streak continues Injuries among Red Sox outfielders giving 29-year-old new life in the majors Will continue to fight to stay at Fenway Park G FLUME/GETTY IMAGES
The Red Sox called up Daniel Nava one month ago Sunday. Surrounded by reporters that day for his standard “How does it feel to be back?” scrum, he gave the requisite replies. “Whatever they need,” he said. “If today was to sit on the bench and pinch hit or sit on the bench and not play, then so be it.” How about this, Daniel? Can you become our new leadoff hitter? Can you become the team leader in OPS (entering Saturday, at least)? Can you draw walks at a rate such that only David Ortiz has more on the team after your first month? Can you play stellar defense? If that is “whatever they need,” then Nava has succeeded in a big way. His all-around, outstanding play altered the picture in the Red Sox outfield, so much so that when it came
Quoted
“(Nava is) everything we could have expected and about 10 more things. He’s just playing a terrific brand of baseball.” RED SOX MANAGER BOBBY VALENTINE TO NESN
Nava’s month Daniel Nava was called up to Boston on May 10. On May 10 Nava ripped a double in his first game back in the bigs against Cleveland. On May 14 Nava had a two-run homer in a 6-1 win over Seattle. On May 23 at Baltimore, Nava crushed a solo homer as the Sox edged the O’s, 6-5. On June 1 at Toronto, Nava posted three doubles in a 7-2 Sox victory.
Daniel Nava was scratched from the lineup yesterday due to a sore left hand, but the Sox outfielder has been a huge bright spot as of late for Boston.
time to drop an outfielder to make room on the roster for Daisuke Matsuzaka, Nava was not even a consideration. The decision came down to Marlon Byrd, an 11-year veteran and one-time All-Star who was hitting .270, or Darnell McDonald, a bench fixture and clubhouse favorite since 2010. Byrd was designated for assignment Saturday as Nava hit leadoff for the seventh time. He went 0-for-4 but again played a solid left field, an unheralded aspect of Nava’s improved play. His fulltilt catch toward the line in the first inning Saturday was one of many he has made on the run and his four assists were tied for second among American League left fielders entering Sunday. Others on the leaderboard were regulars long before Nava came up. It is not a stretch to say that Nava has provided more in his one month of 2012 than Carl Crawford did in any
one-month span of 2011. Most everyone knows Nava’s story. Fails to make team at Santa Clara. Becomes equipment manager. Enrolls in junior college. Becomes an All-American. Wins scholarship at Santa Clara. Earns AllWCC honors. Goes undrafted. Signs with independent Chico Outlaws. Cut by Outlaws. Re-signs with Outlaws. Hits .371. Bought by Red Sox for $1. Rises to majors in less than three seasons. Hits grand slam on first pitch he ever sees in the majors. The next two years have been split between Pawtucket and Boston. Nava has been a fringe player providing outfield depth in the system. When the big club needs 12 outfielders to get through the first two months of the season due to an unreal rash of injuries, fringe players get their shot. Nava, despite his initial expectations to just “sit on the bench” and do “whatever they need,” has made the most of his. Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and Cody Ross will all return at some point. Nava may become a fringe player in the system once again. At the very least, as evidenced by the Byrd/McDonald situation, he has moved up the ladder a bit, continuing a career-long trend of exceeding expectations. Perhaps even his own. TONY LEE

ou would have signed up in mid-December, just prior to this lockout ravaged season, for the Celtics to make it all the way to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals. Easily. But in the words of Doc Rivers, on the day that Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen arrived in Boston, there were monumental changes in Boston’s collective mindset regarding the C’s way back then and in the months leading up to the end of this wonderful era: “From low expectations, to high expectations, that’s what we want. That’s exactly what we want.” Whenever you are two or three stops and two or three makes away from reaching the NBA Finals, there is reason to believe that just a “tweaking” of the roster is the best bet. One can surely believe, however, that Ainge has much larger plans.
T
he Celtics boss likely believes that his team still has a chance to nab Dwight Howard, someway, somehow. They have enough cash to grab a decent free agent this summer (Eric Gordon, Brook Lopez, Roy Hibbert, Nicolas Batum, Ryan Anderson, JaVale McGee and O.J. Mayo can all be had for the right price) or could wait until next summer to target the likes of Josh Smith (Rondo’s old high school buddy). Over the past decade, Ainge has yet to sign a questionable player to a crippling long-term contract. And make no mistake, that is the best thing you can say about any NBA GM. It’s doubtful he will sign a medium-sized fish to a long-term deal. That is the main reason why Kendrick Perkins is not here today. Our expecta-

tions for Ainge and the direction of the franchise have changed dramatically from July 2007 to today. Our expectations for Rondo, now unquestionably the new leader of the franchise, have changed dramatically since this past December. Today, one would sign up for the 2012-13 Celtics to make it back to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals. Easily. More than anyone else, it’s up to Ainge and Rondo to make that happen.

Tense BoSox reeling again Interleague road trips always offer up some interesting scenarios. This week the Red Sox will play three games in baseball’s newest stadium, Marlins Park, and three in its secondoldest, Wrigley Field. Such oddities might mean something to the Sox, but they shouldn’t. Simply put, they need to get it going, anywhere, and one series against the reeling Marlins and another against the crappy Cubs represents an opportunity. Boston has lost six of its last seven after an extra-inning loss Sunday against Washington and are now two games under .500. Here are three things the club needs to do in order to have a turnaround on the sixgame road trip:

BREAK OUT THE BATS. The Red Sox hit only .235 during their 1-5 homestand. They faced some great pitching, especially against Washington. Still, a Boston team ranked among the league leaders in most offensive categories playing host to a young NL team should be able to put up more of a fight. Among the primary culprits is Dustin Pedroia. Since returning from a thumb injury he is 3for-24 (.125) with an uncharacteristic eight strikeouts, including one to end Sunday’s loss with the tying run on first base.
weeks thereafter. Scott Atchison, Andrew Miller and Alfredo Aceves were among those who put up plenty of zeroes. Aceves has become an issue of late, however, and the need is strong for reinforcements.
