As news spread that the alleged Boston Strangler had been arrested on Feb. 25, 1967, onlookers lined the street to get a glimpse of him in the state police wagon.
On a recent evening, the door to 79 Gainsborough St. was propped open as people came and went from the apartment building in the charming Fenway neighborhood. It’s not a remarkable occurrence, but it is a stark contrast to the fear and sense of danger that had come over Boston because of what happened inside that building 50 years ago today. Anna Slesers, a 55-year-old seamstress, was murdered in her apartment at 77 Gainsborough St., (the row of apartment buildings have since been renumbered).
Who was he? BOSTON. No one has ever been charged with the murders police attribute to the Boston Strangler, but one man did confess. Albert DeSalvo was already in jail for sexual assault when he confessed to an inmate that he was

It was the first in a string of 13 murders between 1962 and 1964 in and around Boston that authorities attributed to a suspect dubbed the Boston Strangler. The man would con his way into the women’s apartments and then strangle and sexually assault them. Many of the buildings where the murders occurred are now occupied by young students, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t heard of the notorious spree. At the time, the murders sent the city into a panic as police searched for the killer. The fear caused some women to buy dogs, change their locks and even carry tear gas, according to archived reports. Another murder took place at 1940 Commonwealth Ave., a short walk away from Boston College. BC graduate student Beth Morton has lived in the apartment building for four years. She said she read a book about the Strangler and then realized she lived in the same building as one of the murders. “It’s kind of cool because it’s such a big part of Boston, not a good part, but a big part,” she said. “I’m not sure which apartment it happened in. Greig files appeal just one day after sentence Grounds of appeal unknown Letter Greig’s sister wrote to judge unsealed, says Greig was a ‘good twin’ The attorney for Catherine Greig filed an appeal just one day after the 61-year-old was sentenced to prison. Kevin Reddington filed a claim of appeal yesterday, according to court filings. It is likely a procedural move before a deadline expires. However, Reddington was not available when a reporter called his office. The one paragraph appeal states that Greig claims “an appeal of the above captioned conviction to the United States District Court of Appeals.” Greig, the girlfriend of alleged fugitive mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger, was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison after she pleaded guilty to harboring and identity fraud charges earlier this year. When asked by a reporter
Greig was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Tuesday if they planned to appeal, Reddington replied “probably not.” Also yesterday, letters sent before the sentencing to Judge Douglas Woodlock were un-
sealed. One of the letters was from Greig’s twin sister Margaret McCusker. In the letter she called Greig the “good twin.” “I cannot speak to exactly why she left with [Bulger],” McCusker wrote, “but she had a sense of duty to care for people that most of us do not have.” Other letters came from the family members of the alleged victims of Bulger. Those letters asked Woodlock to sentence Greig to as much time in jail as possible. “She did everything in her power to ensure that these victims’ families never saw justice done,” wrote Steven Davis, whose sister Debra was killed in 1981. DTX could be the place to live, work and play — it just needs a little help City leaders seem to agree: Downtown Crossing is on the verge of fully realizing its potential. In the wake of this week’s announcement that a 606-foot glass tower is slated for the former Filene’s site, a panel of experts shared ideas yesterday on how the bustling district can transform into a new destination to live, work and let loose. In the last few years, the city has seen the revitalization of the district, with three historic theaters opening on Washington Street and the creation of more than 1,500 new jobs since 2008, according to city officials. And that’s not all. “Seven hundred units of housing are under construction, and we have an active Business Improvement District that is committed to strengthening the neighborhood,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino
said. “With the addition of the $615 million Millenium Tower planned for the Filene’s site, this historic area is poised for a true renaissance.” Shannon Emerson Finks, a partner at Petit Robert Central, a downtown bistro, said she is happy the city is not only focusing on growing the district, but is letting everyone in on the vision. “I think this is great that they’re trying to rebuild the district. I’d love to see Downtown Crossing become more of a destination, especially at night,” Finks said.

Sandusky accuser tells tale of abuse, along with intimidation JEFF SWENSEN/GETTY IMAGES
Jerry Sandusky arrives at the court house before the third day of his child sex abuse trial.
A third accuser of Jerry Sandusky told jurors yesterday the former Penn State assistant football coach performed oral sex on him when he was a boy, then used threats to keep him quiet about the abuse. The 25-year-old man said he first met Sandusky in 1997 while attending a summer camp of the Second Mile, a charity founded by Sandusky, but began a relationship with him the following year after attending a second camp, when he was 11. The witness said he had gone to Sandusky’s home in the fall of 1998. With no one else apparently in the house, the two went to his basement and began wrestling on the floor, he said. “He kind of pinned me to the ground and pulled my

pants down and started performing oral sex on me. I freaked out,” he said, voice low. Accounts from a handful of witnesses at the trial this week — including two victims yesterday — have portrayed Sandusky as a predator who used his charity and his reputation to win friendship with boys, who he then molested. The accuser who yesterday recounted being “pinned” to the ground by Sandusky later told jurors that the former coach coerced him to keep quiet about the incident.
“He told me that if I told anybody, I would never see my family again,” said the man, who was living in a foster home at the time and is known in court documents as Victim 10. “I didn’t say anything. Then he apologized for saying that and said he loved me.” Another witness, now a 27year-old man, told jurors that he met Sandusky at a Second Mile summer camp in 1995 when he was 11. Sandusky offered that fall to take him to Penn State football games and he went with him to home games from 1995 to 2000. The man said he showered alone with Sandusky at Penn State athletic facilities six times. At one point the coach bear-hugged him from behind in the shower. REUTERS

Metro’s Monica Weymouth shares her take on the world of gossip
This Lindsay Lohan car crash is turning out to be especially hard to look away from. Not only did the actress lie about who was driving, but now police have confiscated a plastic bottle full of alcohol from the rented Porsche’s trunk, reports TMZ. Luckily, police have decided not to cite her with an open container violation, and she reportedly was not under the influence at the time of the crash. Lohan’s employers, however, aren’t willing to look the other way. The producers of her new Elizabeth Taylor biopic for Lifetime, “Liz & Dick,” decided to

stop taking chances and hired her a driver. “Lifetime will lose a ton of money if Lindsay doesn’t finish filming ‘Liz and Dick,’ plus they don’t want anything to happen to her on their watch,” a source tells PerezHilton.com. “So it was decided it would be cheaper to get her a driver. This is a make-or-break moment for Lindsay.” Nice start, guys. But we recommend adding a special ops team, a creative pharmacist, a lazy river and the fluffiest basket of kittens L.A. has to offer if you truly want to contain this girl.

P
laywright Aditi Brennan Kapil has plenty to say about how people communicate in “Love Person.” Unfortunately, the play feels more like a vehicle to make a point than an entertaining, thought-provoking piece of theater. Kapil’s effort to explore communication across modes as divergent as Sanskrit, sign language, English, e-mail and telephone quickly becomes convoluted in a plot mired in barely plausible premises. Vic (Scarlett Redmond), a twice-divorced, hard-partying cocktail waitress, won’t use her full name (Victoria) since her namesake (Queen Victoria) was the Virgin Queen and Vic was deflowered at 14. Ram (Nael Nacer), a shy Sanskrit scholar, hooks up with Vic at the night-

club where she works. The two enjoy a romantic week together before he returns to wherever it was he came from. The implausibility continues as Vic’s deaf, lesbian sister becomes entangled in an electronic affair resulting from a mistaken identity cliche. This time, the well-worn premise transcends culture, orientation and mode of communication, but it still feels old and tired. Though the relationship be-
tween Free (Sabrina Dennison) and Maggie (Jacqueline Emmart) is rife with dramatic potential, Kapil gives them little to work with. The talented duo enjoys several good moments, but the material is never a match for their talent. There’s a lot of nonverbal communication in the play, yet director M. Bevin O’Gara never finds a way to make it interesting. The lack of precision and innovation create dead air and render the experience about as interesting as reading texts over the shoulder of random strangers on the subway. Even Company One itself misses the mark with a long, painfully awkward pre-show video pitch. NICK DUSSAULT

Titling ‘entitlement’ RE: “FACTS ARE FACTS: LET’S ADDRESS THEM”: Ms. Coughlin
needs a reading comprehension lesson and a lesson on what people mean by the “social safety net.” I don’t need to be reminded that Social Security is not an entitlement program, because I was not referring to Social Security when I mentioned that the Republican Party wants to reduce government waste and fraud in the entitlement programs. Also, Social Security is not considered part of the social safety net — but obviously Ms. Coughlin doesn’t know the difference. The social safety net is referring to government programs that are in place to help the poor and the sick. She should go back and read my letter a second
time so she can see that I never mentioned Social Security. She’s entitled to her opinion, that what the Republican Party wants to do is a “crock,” but she should back it up with some facts defending her opinion. In fact, both Democrats and Republicans want to reduce waste and fraud in government programs for obvious reasons. SAM KHOURY, VIA E-MAIL
Elaine Coughlin is right about many Republicans’ schemes for Social Security, but she plays into their hands by insisting it’s “not an entitlement.” Social Security is absolutely an entitlement (from the root “title,” or ownership), like insurance or annuities we pay into. Conservatives have confused the debate with phrases like “so-called en-
titlement” and “entitlement mentality,” making it seem like a dirty word and falsely comparing Social Security to general tax-paid welfare programs. Think: If someone claimed you aren’t “entitled” to your Social Security upon retirement, would you agree?

hoosing a venue for a Father’s Day feast can’t be that tricky, because when it comes to man food — forgive us if we stereotype here: Steak, barbecue, pizza — Boston has it covered. Sweet Cheeks in the Fenway is the barbecue bomb. Chef Tiffani Faison uses meats from naturally raised animals to benefit both conscience and taste buds. The fabulous hot, piquant sauces are housemade, as are the biscuits, and the fried green tomatoes are unmissable. Pair those with naturally sweetly flavored pork, or the rich beef short rib rubbed with spices, cooked over oak, and tenderized by its own luscious fat. Portions at this Southern-style, casual barbecue joint are generous, just the way they should be. Dad

father’s job isn’t easy. They’re meant to provide for us, challenge us, and subtly undermine our questionable decisions to pursue that “creative” job we’re hoping to land any day now. As you get older, things start to level off a bit, and you can experience the pleasure of taking your father out for a drink and picking up the tab. It’s a nice gesture, but more importantly, a way to show that you can actually scrape two nickels together on your own. He might refuse at first, but he’ll respect you for it. Just don’t make a habit of it, because that dude probably has way more money than you. Maybe your dad is into cocktails? He probably reads this column then. Hi, Dad! Take him to Local 149 where they’re featuring two special Father’s Day cocktails, the Go Ask Your Mother, made with rye, scotch, Cinzano Rosso, and Benedictine; or for more simple, to-thepoint drinking, he’ll want the Disappointed, Not Angry, made with the two ingredients most dads know how to find in the pantry: Balvenie single malt and ice. There’s also a special of prime rib with eggs and lobster stuffed baked potato. Dads like sports too, right? Unfortunately, all of the local teams are done for the season (yes, including the Sox). But for the international-minded sports dad, they’re showing the European Cup at Ducali’s “calcio brunch.” They’re also unveiling a new Italian craft brew there called Birra Del Borgo Re Ale, inspired by traditional Brit pale ales from way back. one of those sound like dad? Here’s an idea: Go to his bar. Not the one he thinks you’ll both like, not the one that will impress him, but the one he normally goes to. Sit next to him, let him order as many crappy macrobrews as he wants. Listen, ask him questions about his life, keep your mouth shut for once about your problems and exciting projects. You may just learn something. With that in mind, you’re a good man Bobby O’Neil. But I’m probably not going to get down to Kingston this weekend, because, you know, I’ve got all this stuff going on.

This one is particularly influenced by Swedish traditions in song and dance, and features a “midsommarstang,” or Swedish maypole. There’s a “sumptuous dessert buffet,” presumably because these long daylight hours are totally sweet. The evening doubles as a fundraiser for Revels, so it also includes a silent auction.

And Sweet’s ‘Modern Art’?
Maybe anniversaries exist as a do-over. At least, that’s how it’s working out for Matthew Sweet, whose 20th anniversary tour for his iconic 1991 record “Girlfriend” has kept him busy since last fall. This time around, says Los Angeles-based Sweet, he’s getting to enjoy the record. “I’m not as nervous and freaky as I was then, I’m more grounded now. So I can enjoy it more,” says the 48-year-old Ne-
Sweet’s scheduling is a bit off: He released his new album, “Modern Art” just before the “Girlfriend” anniversary tour began: “We knew the two were coinciding, but I thought I could keep on promoting ‘Modern Art’ beyond ‘Girlfriend.’ It makes ‘Modern Art’ a bit more mysterious. But I think it will get its attention over time.”

Revolution under way New England changed direction of franchise in offseason Results have been mixed thus far Revs phenomenal at Gillette but road wins have been hard to come by for young team GAIL OSKIN/GETTY IMAGES
Summer is finally here and the Boston Celtics are out of the NBA playoffs, so our professional sports viewing options are getting pretty limited beyond the bumbling Red Sox. You’re excused if you haven’t been paying attention to the New England Revolution thus far in 2012. New England has gotten off to a perfectly mediocre start (5-7-1), giving them 16 points in their first 13 games after the regular season began way too early in March. They sit in sixth place out of 10 teams in the Eastern Conference. The most interesting aspect about the Revs is that they’re 4-1-1 at home but only 1-6-0 on the road. They have scored 18 goals and allowed 18 for a zero goal-differential. Like most sports, winning a game on the

road is difficult in soccer but the results aren’t normally that slanted, especially when shady NBA referees haven’t been seen anywhere near the Gillette field turf as far as we know. After a 2-2 March and 03 April, first-year head coach Jay Heaps and his team went 2-2-1 in MLS during May (2-2-2 overall) but they won their first game in June: 2-0 versus Chicago Fire in Foxborough on June 2. The Revs host a quality Eastern Conference foe — Columbus Crew, (fourth place) — Saturday (7:30 p.m., CSNE), then travel to Toronto FC (1-90) — the worst team out of 19 in MLS — on June 23 (4:30 p.m., CSNE). New England wraps up the month against another quality opponent, the Seattle Sounders (third in the

Veteran goalkeeper Matt Reis has started every game for the Revs, notching two shutouts in the process. Defender Chris Tierney has played well with a goal and three assists, the same numbers as long-time Revolution center midfielder Shalrie Joseph. USING ALL OF YOUR TOOLS There’s a difference between a great baseball player and a great fantasy baseball player. Sometimes, that gap is hard to see. If a guy strikes out a million times and is awful in the field, he’s not necessarily helping his squad. However, he could easily be a fantasy beast.
Leading off Ocho’s home Here’s a serious question: Is Chad Ochocinco, now 34, better than Brian Hartline or Davone Bess? We don’t know the answer and that’s why there’s no reason to get excited about Ochocinco on the Dolphins. He may not even stick as a starter.

There’s a lot of value in accumulating leadoff hitters. For example, Angel Pagan is No. 36 overall in ESPN’s player rater because he scores runs and swipes bags while hitting in front of the Giants’ heavy hitters. Alejandro De Aza isn’t an elite talent either, but he’s a top-25 player for similar reasons.

Wins is a brutal category because it depends on a pitcher’s offense and bullpen. One thing we can count on is strikeouts. Cli Lee has zero wins, but is still a top-40 pitcher thanks in large part to his 74 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings. Ivan Nova and Derek Lowe have combined for 17 wins, but neither are top-60 fantasy starter options.
The best fantasy players have no holes. Prince Fielder and Alex Rodriguez have the big names, but Carlos Gonzalez and Andrew McCutchen have the significantly bigger fantasy games. That’s because they hit for average, power and steal bags. Target the well-balanced studs.
