Police search for suspect that shot at officer Police are searching for a man who they say shot at a police officer after robbing a bank. Cops say that on Tuesday at around 12:40 a.m., police officers attempted to stop a man wanted for a robbery earlier that day. The suspect fled, cops said, and shot at the officer three times. No one was struck. The robbery was at Manida Street and Lafayette Avenue. METRO/AB

Police Officer Richard Haste has been suspended pending the outcome of the trial.

Emotions ran high yesterday morning at the Bronx Criminal Courthouse. There, Police Officer Richard Haste hobbled in on crutches to his arraignment, where he was charged with manslaughter for allegedly killing an unarmed teenager. Haste pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of Ramarley Graham, 18, killed in February. Graham’s parents broke down in tears during the court hearing. Father Frank Graham cried as prosecutors detailed how they said Haste “consciously and deliberately pulled the trigger” while facing the teen in his bathroom. Haste was in an undercover narcotics unit, and officers reportedly said they thought Graham had a gun. They followed Graham into his Wakefield apartment, and Haste allegedly fired one shot at him in the bathroom, killing him. Graham was reportedly trying to flush a small bag of marijuana down the toilet at the time. Haste’s bail was set at $50,000, which he paid and then left the courthouse. It is unknown why he was on crutches. Graham’s mother, Constance Malcolm, told reporters outside court, “This has to stop. They can’t keep killing our kids.” Graham also said that he

Six trapped in Hilton elevator after explosion in basement A generator exploded in the basement of the massive Hilton hotel on Sixth Avenue in Midtown yesterday afternoon, according to the FDNY. The call reporting the explosion came in at 1:09 p.m., firefighters told Metro. The explosion did not cause a fire, but the basement and lobby of the hotel filled with

black smoke from the blast, and the building lost electric power. Two of the 24 elevators in the illustrious hotel stopped working as a result of the power loss, and six people were trapped inside the lifts for approximately 45 minutes. After they got out, one woman who was trapped was so shaken by

the incident that she had to be carried out of the hotel on a stretcher, and was treated for stress-related problems. “I didn’t know what was happening,” said the woman, a member of the hotel’s housekeeping staff who did not want to give her name. “I was very scared and nervous.” MILES DIXON

Case reveals racial tension

“I keep asking why. Why did he kill our son? Why, why, did he kill our son? Eighteen years old. Eighteen. He did nothing to deserve this.” FRANK GRAHAM won’t be able to spend Father’s Day, this Sunday, with his son. “Haste is going home to his family. When we leave here, we’re going to the cemetery,” he said, according to The Associated Press. Anti-NYPD protesters as well as supportive fellow members of the NYPD rallied outside the courthouse yesterday. News reports cited cheering fellow officers along with protesters yelling, “NYPD, KKK, how many kids did you kill today?” ALISON BOWEN

Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams said the anger of protesters yesterday highlights the underlying tension between the police and minority communities. “Many of us have been saying that there’s a lot of tension that’s bubbling up,” he said. Minorities feel they are treated differently by cops, he said. “When you say that it’s OK to treat communities differently, this is what happens,” he said. “Usually black and Latino men can be treated differently, and that leads to an unarmed man being shot and killed in his bathroom.” METRO/AB

“We have too much of this going on and it has to stop. We need it to stop. We can’t keep killing our kids.” CONSTANCE MALCOLM

New York targets sex-trafficking taxicab drivers New York City cab drivers convicted of felony sex trafficking for ferrying prostitutes to illicit liaisons would lose their licenses under new legislation passed yesterday by the New York City Council. The council measure follows the high-profile arrests in April of a half dozen New York livery cab drivers charged with promoting prostitution. Prosecutors said the drivers got a fee to help find customers for a ring of prostitutes. In December, a sex-trafficking victim testified before the City Council that she had worked with about 70 drivers who ferried her to 5,000 clients.

Cabbies caught ferrying prostitutes could face up to a $10,000 fine. “We are recognizing ... the unconscionable and cruel role that taxi drivers and livery drivers are playing in this brutal attack, that keeps people trapped [and] takes their lives away from them,” City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said at a news conference. Quinn also announced that the city partnered with Delta, JetBlue and American Airlines,

all companies that agreed to train their flight crews on how to recognize sex-trafficking victims on a plane, and what to do if someone approaches them. “Airports aren’t the only way that victims are brought in, but it’s clearly one way,” she said. Under the legislation, city taxi and livery drivers would face up to a $10,000 fine and lose their licenses if convicted of a felony related to sex trafficking. The legislation goes to Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his signature. Bloomberg’s office had no immediate comment on the bill. REUTERS/ALISON BOWEN

Brooklyn’s still got it. It’s now more expensive than ever to live in many Brooklyn neighborhoods, according to a report released today. Unprecedented rental rates are emerging in Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and Williamsburg, according to a monthly Brooklyn rental report released by MNS realty group. The May 2012 report showed that one- and two-bedroom rental rates in Brooklyn Heights are an average of 22 percent and 35 percent higher than the average rents for the

rest of the borough, respectively. “Still want this trendy nabe, think about going solo where you can get a studio for just under $2,000,” suggests the report. In addition, two-bedroom

units in those neighborhoods have seen a rental increase of 11.6 percent since last year. Those units are now renting for an average of $3,077 per month. Those looking for cheaper Brooklyn options can always move to less expensive neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy, but even there rents have gone up 6.5 percent in the last two months, thanks in part to new construction, the report found. Still, despite the increase, rent in Bed-Stuy is still 45 percent less than in Williamsburg. METRO/DB

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is offering $9 million in prizes to U.S. cities through his charitable foundation in a competition for ideas that local governments can use to solve problems. The contest, which Bloomberg Philanthropies calls the Mayors Challenge, started yesterday; the foundation sent invitations to compete to 1,300 mayors of U.S. cities with more than 30,000 residents. They have until Sept. 14 to enter their submissions, said James Anderson, director of the charity’s government-innovation program. The top 20 finalists will visit New York at the philanthropy’s expense for a socalled “ideas camp, two days of mingling with foundationselected experts to refine proposals on affordable housing, health, money and management. The winner, to be announced next year, will receive $5 million, and four runners-up will each get $1 million. New York City isn’t eligible, Anderson said. “The Mayors Challenge creates an opportunity for mayors to champion their boldest ideas and to have them take root locally and perhaps spread nationally, said Bloomberg in a statement.

Good political sense, too “In a baldly political sense, he’s collecting chits, said Douglas Muzzio, professor of urban politics at Baruch College in Manhattan, said of Bloomberg’s contest. “But the bottom line is, is this good for the public? And the answer has to be yes. There’s real policy being made here. And he gets the personal satisfaction of funding a good thing and receiving praise from the five mayors participating in it.

His charity has committed $24 million to city governments in Chicago, New Orleans, Atlanta, Louisville and Memphis. The foundation’s promotional video features Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel discussing the $6 million his city received. He used the money to hire staff to improve agencies’ customer services, and develop energy-conservation programs to cut carbon emissions in residential buildings. The city has reduced licenses and permits required of smallbusinesses by about half, said Anderson. BLOOMBERG

Sandusky accuser tells tale of abuse, along with intimidation JEFF SWENSEN/GETTY IMAGES

Jerry Sandusky arrives at the court house before the third day of his child sex abuse trial.

A third accuser of Jerry Sandusky told jurors yesterday the former Penn State assistant football coach performed oral sex on him when he was a boy, then used threats to keep him quiet about the abuse. The 25-year-old man said he first met Sandusky in 1997 while attending a summer camp of the Second Mile, a charity founded by Sandusky, but began a relationship with him the following year after attending a second camp, when he was 11. The witness said he had gone to Sandusky’s home in the fall of 1998. With no one else apparently in the house, the two went to his basement and began wrestling on the floor, he said. “He kind of pinned me to the ground and pulled my ADVERTISEMENT

pants down and started performing oral sex on me. I freaked out,” he said, voice low. Accounts from a handful of witnesses at the trial this week — including two victims yesterday — have portrayed Sandusky as a predator who used his charity and his reputation to win friendship with boys, who he then molested. The accuser who yesterday recounted being “pinned” to the ground by Sandusky later told jurors that the former coach coerced him to keep quiet about the incident.

“He told me that if I told anybody, I would never see my family again,” said the man, who was living in a foster home at the time and is known in court documents as Victim 10. “I didn’t say anything. Then he apologized for saying that and said he loved me.” Another witness, now a 27year-old man, told jurors that he met Sandusky at a Second Mile summer camp in 1995 when he was 11. Sandusky offered that fall to take him to Penn State football games and he went with him to home games from 1995 to 2000. The man said he showered alone with Sandusky at Penn State athletic facilities six times. At one point the coach bear-hugged him from behind in the shower. REUTERS

Cold virus hitches a ride to kill cancer In a significant step forward for the development of a potential new cancer treatment, scientists have found how a common cold virus can kill tumors and trigger an immune response, like a vaccine, when injected into the blood stream. Researchers from Britain’s Leeds University and the Institute of Cancer Research said by hitching a ride on blood cells, the virus was protected from antibodies in the blood stream that might otherwise

the blood stream at routine outpatient appointments — like standard chemotherapy — making them potentially suitable for treating a range of cancers. The study, part-funded by the charity Cancer Research U.K. and conducted on 10 patients with advanced bowel cancer, confirmed that reovirus attacks on two fronts — killing cancer cells directly and triggering an immune response that helps eliminate leftover cancer cells. Lohan avoids a charge, gains a babysitter This Lindsay Lohan car crash is turning out to be especially hard to look away from. Not only did the actress lie about who was driving, but now police have confiscated a plastic bottle full of alcohol from the rented Porsche’s trunk, reports TMZ. Luckily, police have decided not to cite her with an open container violation, and she reportedly was not under the influence at the time of the crash. Lohan’s employers, however, aren’t willing to look the other way. The producers of her new Elizabeth Taylor biopic for Lifetime, “Liz & Dick,” decided to

stop taking chances and hired her a driver. “Lifetime will lose a ton of money if Lindsay doesn’t finish filming ‘Liz and Dick,’ plus they don’t want anything to happen to her on their watch,” a source tells PerezHilton.com. “So it was decided it would be cheaper to get her a driver. This is a make-or-break moment for Lindsay.” Nice start, guys. But we recommend adding a special ops team, a creative pharmacist, a lazy river and the fluffiest basket of kittens L.A. has to offer if you truly want to contain this girl.

‘Rock of Ages’ Based on the play of the same name, director Adam Shankman (“Hairspray”) once again brings Broadway to Hollywood. Set to popular hair metal hits of the 1980s, Drew (Diego Boneta) and Sherrie (Julianne Hough) seek musical fame in Los Angeles. Oh, and then there’s Tom Cruise starring as mystical rock god, Stacee Jaxx.

What it’s like to be ‘Miss Advised’?

Professional matchmaker Amy Laurent has successfully united many couples, but how does she fare in her own love life? Bravo TV’s new reality show explores the lives of Laurent and other single relationship experts

N

BRAVO TV

ew York matchmaker Amy Laurent is about to star in a show that points out all the ways in which she doesn’t stick to her own dating advice. Bravo TV’s “Miss Advised” features herself and two other relationship experts — Julia Allison in Los Angeles and Emily Morse in San Francisco — who can dole out great bits of wisdom for other people, but have a hard time settling down themselves. Laurent discussed with us the perils of dating on TV.

I can’t imagine anyone signs up to do a reality show knowing it will end up being about how, as a dating expert, she doesn’t take her own dating advice.

Well, I knew. First of all, the decision to make a reality show is a big one. I knew that this wasn’t a matchmaker show. It was pretty clear that this would be an inside look at what real life is for an expert. When you go

into a show knowing there are two other relationship experts who happen to be single, you can’t lie to yourself and say “I didn’t know this was going to delve into my personal life.”

How did you prepare the men you were dating for spending time in front of the camera?

To be honest, for the past four and a half years, I haven’t really dated, so having a camera there didn’t make much of a difference for me because I was just getting myself back into the dating world. There was no

‘Spinsterlicious’

How one woman is single-handedly reinventing what it means to be female and single past your 30s The ‘Spin’

Pearls of Wells’ wisdom:

Eleanor Wells’ book, “Spinsterlicious,” is available on Amazon.com

“I love having a boyfriend. I love having him go home,” says Eleanore Wells, the vivacious author of “The Spinsterlicious Life: 20 Life Lessons for Living Happily Single & Childfree.” Wells has not had what many consider the traditional life. By middle age, she is unmarried and child-free. And she’s sick of people pitying her for it. “I don’t think husbands and kids are for everybody,” she says. “I think they’re really good things to have, but lots of women, either by choice or by circumstance, are not going to have that. My belief is that you owe yourself a good life, no matter what your circumstance

is. … I’m living proof, because I have a fantastic life.” Having been a source of inspiration to her other single friends, Wells decided to outline, in her book, all of the benefits of singledom. Her points are not aimed at rejecting coupling, but at leading a full life while alone, which can also lead to being not so single anymore. “You can certainly figure out a way to celebrate all the other good things that are going on in your life,” says Wells. “And happy people often attract other people.” HEIDI PATALANO

heidi.patalano@metro.us

If your ex was a jerk the first time around, he’s still be a jerk next time around: “If [your reason for breaking up the first time was] personalityor behavior-related —he was a jerk, he wasn’t nice, if he was mean, if he cheated — you know those are four things that kind of say something about the person. Don’t go there.” You can’t force chemistry: “I think you kind of know relatively quickly whether you are drawn to someone. … I don’t think you can fake that. I don’t think you can force it. So, there was a time when I would meet, you know, what we would call your ‘standard nice guy,’ and I’d feel nothing and I’d say, ‘Oh, but he’s so great, he’s a good person! I should be attracted to him. I should want to date him.’ It doesn’t work.” Babies aren’t for everybody: “There’s almost nothing else you can do in life that you can’t take back or change in any way. Having a kid is. You have to be 100 percent all the way in, and so if there’s doubt there, I think you should wait until there is no doubt.

So you think you’ve had some bad dates?

Author Eddie Campbell might have you beat with his new book, ‘44 Horrible Dates’ What you need to do to avoid cringe-worthy courting The Car Squatter, the Gay Pirate, the Cross-Eyed Magician, the Sleeping Pill — are these characters all part of a bad “Saturday Night Live” sketch? No. These are the nicknames that belong to some of the worst men author Eddie Campbell has ever dated. The Los Angeles native has had so many terrible and extreme experiences that he’s recently compiled them into a book: “44 Horrible Dates.” Campbell’s hilarious look at dating in L.A. is rife with oddballs — from the guy who showed up to a date hopped up on cocaine to the one who wanted to put some groceries to use in the bedroom. Is Campbell a magnet for crazy? Given reader response to his mem-

oirs, he doesn’t think so. “You can be the college-educated person, have a great life, love your family — all that stuff can be in place, and you can still meet a—holes,” Campbell says. “I know so many gorgeous, beautiful, smart women who keep just meeting d— after d— after d—.” But he says all those terrible dates have helped him to avoid future disasters. “It’s a good lesson for everyone because when you’re younger, you’re a lot less judgmental about who you might go on a date with,” says Campbell. “As you get older, and you’re still single, you start breaking down what you’re willing to put up with. It’s

not being overly picky, but it’s knowing what’s right for you.” Campbell stresses that one of the best ways to avoid the pitfalls he’s experienced with say, Nightmare on Vegan Street, is to take some time to evaluate your potential date before agreeing to spend time with them. “Talk longer on the phone, get out a few questions,” Campbell says. “I’ve actually been on dates where you’re so bored you’re thinking about separating your darks from your whites and what you’re doing for the next day. Don’t place yourself in that scenario.” HEIDI PATALANO

needs a reading comprehension lesson and a lesson on what people mean by the “social safety net.” I don’t need to be reminded that Social Security is not an entitlement program, because I was not referring to Social Security when I mentioned that the Republican Party wants to reduce government waste and fraud in the entitlement programs. Also, Social Security is not considered part of the social safety net — but obviously Ms. Coughlin doesn’t know the difference. The social safety net is referring to government programs that are in place to help the poor and the sick. She should go back and read my letter a second

time so she can see that I never mentioned Social Security. She’s entitled to her opinion, that what the Republican Party wants to do is a “crock,” but she should back it up with some facts defending her opinion. In fact, both Democrats and Republicans want to reduce waste and fraud in government programs for obvious reasons. SAM KHOURY, VIA E-MAIL

Elaine Coughlin is right about many Republicans’ schemes for Social Security, but she plays into their hands by insisting it’s “not an entitlement.” Social Security is absolutely an entitlement (from the root “title,” or ownership), like insurance or annuities we pay into. Conservatives have confused the debate with phrases like “so-called en-

titlement” and “entitlement mentality,” making it seem like a dirty word and falsely comparing Social Security to general tax-paid welfare programs. Think: If someone claimed you aren’t “entitled” to your Social Security upon retirement, would you agree? DAVE CAMPBELL, VIA E-MAIL

Metro grills BBQ master John Stage J

COURTESY OF DINOSAUR BAR-B-QUE

ohn Stage is the man you want at your BBQ parties this summer. Owner and Pit Master of Dinosaur Bar-BQue in Harlem, Stage knows all the tricks to what makes good barbecue. With a new location in Brooklyn set to open in 2013, the chef shared his tips for superb summer grilling.

Hot chef

We hear you got your start on the road serving meals for bikers.

I’m a Harley[-Davidson] rider and I realized the food for them wasn’t good. I spent years serving food for bikers at motorcycle shows and tattoo shows. Eventually I got burnt out by that lifestyle. I wanted to settle down instead of living life on the road. What’s the dierence between grilling and barbecuing?

The biggest difference between the two is the temperature. You have to master your fire. Grilling is done on high heat and done quickly. You have to be right there when you’re grilling, as it requires immediate attention. Barbecue requires low temperature and patience — a great amount of patience. Do you cook when you’re not working?

I do cook when I’m not working, but it’s different. At home

John Stage mans the grill at Harlem’s Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.

If you go Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

I’m more pasta-driven, though I’ll grill occasionally. I usually cook a quick meal, nothing elaborate. Lately my go-to has been jerked chicken since I can cook it in 45 minutes and have fun around the grill.

What tips can you oer for those prepping for a barbecue?

A big mistake people make is flipping the meat too often. It drives me crazy when I see it. Try to let it sit and not flip too much. Also, a lot of people marinate. When meat is wet and you put it on the grill, you’re negating the purpose. All that does is create a steam effect. Dry the meat before putting it on the grill. This way you’ll get a smoky, seared difference. MARY ANN GEORGANTOPOULOS

istening to Laura Cantrell, you may be surprised to find out that she’s a New Yorker. It may have come as a surprise to Cantrell, herself. While attending Columbia, the Nashvilleraised singer discovered an unexpectedly robust country music scene and decided to stay put while she began her recording career. “I think that there are country music fans everywhere,” she says. “When you’re dealing music-lover to musiclover, they don’t subscribe to the cliches.” She is currently working on a new album of original songs.

Why did you stay in New York?

I realized early on that, despite my initial shock that there would be a country music audience in New York, there was quite a large and well-informed country audience here — maybe not so much about the current hits of the day, but go-

ing back to the folk era. In the Village there were a lot of people who observed the renaissance of Appalachian music and followed that through the ’70s and ’80s … I saw Alison Krauss for the first time at the Bottom Line many years ago. So you could trace, through what came through New York and what the audience liked here, these threads of country music history — and that was always very interesting to me. How did you find that scene?

There was so much live music in New York; you could see everything from a local band that had rockabilly influences mixed with punk to Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson playing at Tramps or Radio City or the Beacon. Johnny Cash played in New York, too, two or three times every year. There was a long period where the really big icons of country music would make a stop in New York: Dolly Parton, Loretta

Lynn, Tammy Wynette — I got to see them all here in New York City. You’ve covered songs from decidedly non-country artists like New Order and Burt Bacharach. What leads you to cover a particular song?

I think that you choose covers

because of what you might be able to do with them emotionally. ... When I recorded [Bacharach’s] “Trains and Boats and Planes,” I had just had my daughter and my lifestyle had suddenly changed from being someone who traveled a lot and had the freedom to move, to being, all of a sudden, rooted to my apartment and the rhythms and schedule of my daughter, so for me the wistfulness of that song was a little bit about leaving the freedom to be able to go. At the same time, the song itself is a love song and it’s hopeful ... it’s wistful and yet it turns that around. Those were the things that I personally related to. In the case of “Love Vigilantes,” that was a little bit

more self-conscious as a choice because I knew that a New Order song would really be something that was not expected out of a country-folk singer. ... It’s a really cool, beautifully written song, and part of me was tempted to go in the direction of “Wink, wink, here’s us doing New Order, aren’t we clever?” and another side of me said, “No, let’s tell the story.” And in doing that, for me, it was much more satisfying. It was like listening to somebody tell a great ghost story and wanting to know, “Well, was it really true? Was the character really a ghost or was that just how he felt?” REBECCA FINKEL

Parise to MSG: ‘No’ Devils captain is center of attention at breakup day Say he doesn’t envision signing with Rangers Hopes to work out deal with New Jersey

BRUCE BENNETT/GETTY IMAGES

Coughlin not happy with Ballard move Giants head coach Tom Coughlin rarely vents his emotions. So that he bristled at questions about Jake Ballard being claimed on waivers by the Patriots was news in itself. “‘Discouraged’ is a minor description; very disappointing, “Coughlin said. “I’m not going to have a lot to say about that one — just the fact that we are disappointed; very disappointed.” The team chose to waive the injured tight end, with the assumption he would clear waivers and could be re-signed, as opposed to keeping him on the 90-man roster and placing him on IR. He wouldn’t answer why. “Don’t ask me those questions. I don’t have the answers for you there. We are all disappointed, that’s all.” METRO

By his own admission, Zach Parise does not know what his future holds. But he knows the organization that he wants no part of. Parise had a simple, direct response when asked if he could envision signing with the Rangers as a free agent this offseason. “No.” That was just part of a wideranging interview session with the Devils’ captain on the team’s breakup day following their series loss in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final. “It still sucks. We [were] hoping we would be playing [Game 7] tonight,” Parise said yesterday. But the Devils were still proud about what they had accomplished. The Devils finished the regular season with a 48-28-6 record, good for 102 points and the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference. The 2011-12 season marked the 13th time in franchise history the Devils recorded 100-plus points. The appearance in the Stanley Cup final was the Devils’ first since winning the franchise’s third championship in 2003. Still it is a virtual certainty that the reigning Eastern Conference champions will not return wholly intact even with the salary cap expected to increase to $70.3 million. The Devils have 15 unrestricted free agents highlighted by Parise and Martin Brodeur. Brodeur reiterated yesterday that his initial feeling is that he wants to return, before adding

Parise wouldn’t guarantee he will be back in New Jersey, but he won’t be going to the Rangers.

“I hope that we’ll be able to keep him. ... I think he’s the face of the Devils.” MARTIN BRODEUR, ON PARISE

he owes the organization a final decision before the July 1 free agency period. Parise is a different situation. The soon-to-be 28-year-old is, along with Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter, the top prize on the unrestricted free agent market. The Devils’ captain finished the regular season with 31 goals and 69 points, and scored eight goals and 15 points in the playoffs.

Devils finances still up in air Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello appeared unconcerned about the franchise’s shaky financial state. The Devils are $200 million in debt and owner Jeff Vanderbeek “is actively working on restructuring the debt,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in his state-of-the-union address prior to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final. A recently published report suggested the Devils earned $32.3 million during the playoffs.

Even though he would not rule out signing a contract with the only NHL home he’s known prior to July 1, Parise said his first foray into unrestricted free agency is “exciting.” “He’s a priority; we’ve said that from day one,” general manager Lou Lamoriello said of Parise. “He will remain a priority.” DENIS GORMAN sports@metro.us

“There’s a wall up between that end of the team and myself. There is nothing that [has] affected what I’m doing [or] has affected it. What has to be taken care of will be taken care of in the very near future. In my opinion, things will get settled,” Lamoriello said. Zach Parise said the players were ignoring the issue. “We’ve only been paying attention to what’s been going on, on the ice,” he said. “But I don’t know where that all stands today.” METRO/DG

USING ALL OF YOUR TOOLS There’s a difference between a great baseball player and a great fantasy baseball player. Sometimes, that gap is hard to see. If a guy strikes out a million times and is awful in the field, he’s not necessarily helping his squad. However, he could easily be a fantasy beast.

Leading off Ocho’s home Here’s a serious question: Is Chad Ochocinco, now 34, better than Brian Hartline or Davone Bess? We don’t know the answer and that’s why there’s no reason to get excited about Ochocinco on the Dolphins. He may not even stick as a starter.

There’s a lot of value in accumulating leadoff hitters. For example, Angel Pagan is No. 36 overall in ESPN’s player rater because he scores runs and swipes bags while hitting in front of the Giants’ heavy hitters. Alejandro De Aza isn’t an elite talent either, but he’s a top-25 player for similar reasons.

The cream of the crop The best fantasy players have no holes. Prince Fielder and Alex Rodriguez have the big names, but Carlos Gonzalez and Andrew McCutchen have the significantly bigger fantasy games. That’s because they hit for average, power and steal bags. Target the well-balanced studs.

Everyone knows about Trent Richardson and Doug Martin. But these rookies fly further under the radar:

1

Wins is a brutal category because it depends on a pitcher’s offense and bullpen. One thing we can count on is strikeouts. Cli Lee has zero wins, but is still a top-40 pitcher thanks in large part to his 74 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings. Ivan Nova and Derek Lowe have combined for 17 wins, but neither are top-60 fantasy starter options.

Carlos Gonzalez has a game built for fantasy success.

Paul Goldschmidt

RP, Athletics Brian Fuentes has blown his chance to close games. Enter Cook, a 24-year-old righty who has a 0.67 ERA and 0.89 WHIP through 25 outings.

1B, Diamondbacks A brutal start had owners panicking. But over the last 30 days Goldy is hitting .363 with six homers and a pair of steals.

Landry has played in just 17 games combined over the past two seasons as he dealt with injuries.

Landry averaged 5.9 tackles per game over the past two seasons — good for a safety.

Trevor Plouffe 2B, 3B, SS, OF, Twins Plouffe is a versatile 2004 first-round pick that is now in his prime at age 26. In 144 career big-league games, he’s smacked 20 homers.

David Wilson, RB, NYG — Wilson will bring extreme athleticism and explosion to the old Brandon Jacobs role. Kendall Wright, WR, TEN — Kenny Britt’s rehab hasn’t been smooth. Wright is shining at all three wideout spots during spring practice. Brian Quick, WR, STL — He was drafted to be Sam Bradford’s go-to guy right away. Quick is drawing comparisons to Terrell Owens.

Landry rehab still ‘ahead of the game’ New Jet LaRon Landry said his speedy recovery from a foot injury suffered last year “is shocking myself, but the former first-round pick isn’t yet ready to commit to being healthy for the start of training camp. Much like the first day of minicamp, Landry participated in light jogging and stretching with the team yesterday, but didn’t participate in team drills. Landry spent much of the last month in Arizona, recovering from what was originally called an Achilles injury. “Basically I came for the first couple of weeks of offseason training and then after that, went back to Arizona to have procedures done, Landry said. “That was my choice and decision to go back so that they could finish — complete whatever I had to do rehab-wise, strength and conditioning. I felt real comfortable going back, and I had no doubt that I would come back and not be ahead of the game. Landry, a hard-hitting safety, was the prize free-agent signing of head coach Rex Ryan, but he has been plagued with injuries throughout his career.

Rather than have surgery, Landry instead went the route of alternative treatments, including stem cell treatment and platelet rich plasma therapy. The injection of platelets into an injured area promotes healing and growth of the area. “I did one treatment, was supposed to do three. Didn’t have to do the other two, Landry said. “That’s a blessing; I’m ahead of the game. Landry’s absence from the team is no indication of a lack of excitement to be with the Jets. His brother, Dawan, spent five years with Ryan in Baltimore. “When I was going on my visits, [he said] ‘As soon as you go to the Jets just sign. No need to look anywhere else, you’re going to love it.’ The way this organization does things as a whole is the right way, Landry said. KRISTIAN DYER
