Man pleads not guilty after police chase Martin at his arraignment
BOSTON. A Brighton man who led state police on a chase through Cambridge and then used the Red Line to flee pleaded not guilty to multiple charges Thursday. Leroy Martin, 34, was arraigned on 10 charges including unlawful possession of a
firearm and being an armed career criminal, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office. Police said they were watching Martin after they received a tip that he planned to illegally sell a loaded .357 gun to a man in the parking lot of
the Revere Target on Wednesday afternoon. When police tried to stop Martin, he fled in a car into Cambridge where a state police trooper fired his gun. No one was injured. Martin continued to flee and eventually crashed into anoth-
er car near the Charles/MGH MBTA station. He then got on the Red Line and continued to flee until police caught up with him in Kendall Square. Martin was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail and to wear a GPS monitoring device. METRO/MN

Train catches fire in North Station BOSTON. A mechanical
failure in the engine of a commuter rail locomotive at North Station ignited a smoky fire and delayed outbound commuter trains Thursday afternoon. A spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. said the Haverhill line train had arrived in Boston about 10 minutes prior and was empty at the time of the fire. The incident closed three tracks, all which were reportedly reopened in less than an hour. GLOBE

Report predicts surge in T riders Could cost up to $1B to keep up with rising ridership Residential, commercial development to blame NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO
Fare increases and service cuts; it’s becoming an old story for T riders. But a report released Thursday shows a new problem looming in the distance — mega overcrowding. The Urban Land Institute projects that within a decade, the T may see between 100,000 and 367,000 more daily riders, putting particular pressure on the Red, Orange and Green lines as well as commuter rail lines dependent on South Station. The report’s author said those lines are either approaching capacity, at capacity, or will be beyond capacity in the future. “The commonwealth will have to invest more money in the T, or the crunch is going to get worse,” said author Stephanie Pollack, an associate director of the Dukakis Center for Urban & Regional Policy at Northeastern University. “In order to accommodate, they need to update the system with more trains and more cars, and run them with more frequency.” The Green Line in particular, she said, not only has issues with congestion, but has electricity and signal systems that date back to the 1920s. Pollack predicts it could

cost as much as $1 billion to accommodate the T’s growing needs. The higher traffic will be ushered in with the development of roughly 75,000 new residential units expected to pop up around MBTA stations over the next 20 years. The report also shows that
by 2035, about 130,000 new jobs will be located in commercial space near T stations, adding to the soaring ridership. But as long as the T can come up with the cash, Pollack said, it is good news for the local economy. “The development community sees stations as exactly the right place to build. The whole point of putting homes and jobs near the T is for people to use transit. If we want to attract that kind of investment by developers, there has to be room on the trains,” she said. MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis said the report reinforces what T officials have been saying over the last year. “A long-term financial fix is absolutely critical to stabilizing the MBTA’s budget situation and providing the resources necessary to maintain reliable service and satisfy growing demand,” Davis said. Transit authorities have been joined by state and local leaders in the push for longterm solution to the budget troubles facing the transit system. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Bay State residents have become accustomed to hosting various sports championship events in recent years including the World Series and the Stanley Cup finals. On Saturday, Massachusetts will add another contest to that list — one that is more often played by kindergarteners. The Musical Chairs World Championship takes place in Amesbury and is expected to draw thousands of competitors seeking to claim the title of world musical chair champion and a $10,000 prize. Organizers are also hoping to break the Guinness World Record for the largest game of musical chairs set by a group of more than 8,000 in Singapore more than 20 years ago. Fred Smith, who owns the offbeat event managing company SmithFest Events, came up with the idea while trying to think of a fundraiser. He then worked with his team to devel-

He even created the World Musical Chairs Federation, the “international governing body for all major musical chairs competitions.” “The response has been amazing,” said Smith by phone as he helped to load up about a thousand chairs for the event. “But one of the things we’re lacking is history and actual footage to show people, but we’re not doing bad.” Despite that, Smith said he hopes to make the event an annual occurrence. He said he’s already received calls from organizations in Michigan, San Francisco and Ireland that hope to sanction musical chair competitions. Spectators must pay an admission fee. Obama, Romney have economy swords drawn SAMAD/AFP/GETTY IMAGES
President Barack Obama cast his re-election battle with Mitt Romney as a clash between starkly contrasting philosophies and charged that his Republican rival would hollow out the middle class in a high-stakes speech on Thursday that could set the tone for months of intense campaigning. Standing at a podium that bore the motto “Forward,” Obama accused Romney of wanting to resurrect the Republican economic policies that preceded the 2008 crisis that plunged the United States into a recession from which it has not fully recovered. “We can’t afford to jeopardize the future by repeating the mistakes of the past. Not now, not when we’ve got so much at stake,” Obama told a crowd of 1,500 at a community col-
lege in the battleground state of Ohio. On a day when both candidates for the Nov. 6 presidential election spoke in Ohio, Romney struck first in a speech that ended four minutes before Obama took the stage. “He’s been president for three and a half years. And talk is cheap, actions speak very loud. If you want to see the results of his economic policies, look around Ohio, look around the country,” Romney said at Seilkop Industries, a Cincinnati manufacturer. Obama is coming off the roughest stretch of his presidency since last summer’s debt-ceiling showdown and his Democratic allies worry that he could lose the election if it is simply a referendum on his efforts to boost the shaky economy. Two more men testified in Jerry Sandusky’s child sex abuse trial about being molested by the former Penn State assistant football coach, and a university campus detective on Thursday recalled Sandusky saying “I wish I were dead” after being confronted by an alleged victim’s mother about showering with her son. Prosecutors moved toward wrapping up their case in the closely watched trial in Pennsylvania. Judge John Cleland told jurors before breaking for lunch at the Centre County Court in
Pennsylvania that prosecutors, who began presenting evidence on Monday, could conclude their case by Thursday afternoon. The trial is taking place amid a heavy media presence in the small town of Bellefonte, about 10 miles from Penn State’s main campus. REUTERS

2 Q&A Would you have ever shared these memories with other MCs when you were coming up? Or would that be a sign of the weakness you mentioned? You know, we always chop it up like that together. ... You saw the Eminem I know, not the Eminem on the records. … We have a lot of respect in hiphop. The rappers know who’s who. It ain’t just because there’s a camera there; I got to capture my friends as I know they are, and I know they’re all cool. I know the way Rakim is and I know how Kanye will be. If you say, “Go rhyme,” he’ll go crazy. And he really did! I know! He was like, “I’m in Ice’s movie, and they wanna see me spit” and to me ... when you watch Kanye, it’s like you’re watching Jimi Hendrix in a solo. All of a sudden he’s just in one of his runs and you can’t stop. We kept the camera running and you know, if you mess up a word, it doesn’t matter, because where the hell are you pulling these words from anyway? [Laughs]

ip-hop is reaching an age where more and more of its most highprofile practitioners never knew a time when it did not exist. That’s one of the reasons that Ice-T felt compelled to make “Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap.” For his directorial debut, which opens Friday, he rounded up 38 rap legends to document an oral history of the genre’s birth and growth. Through this method he unveils the creative process of an art form that is not often enough given the cultural credit it deserves. “This film isn’t about the money, the cars, the jewelry, the girls,” he says at the beginning of the movie. “This film is about the craft, what it takes to write a rap, what goes on inside the heads of the masters.”
It feels like this movie couldn’t have been made at any other time. Most of the originators are still alive and vibrant, but they’re not so entrenched in the game that they’re above being nostalgic.
When you get to the point where hip-hop is old enough that people can look back at it and reflect, it’s much better than catching it in the moment, because when you catch an artist in the moment, there’s no mistakes. Everything is right, everything is on point, there’s no weakness. I think that when you get older you’ve been through it, you have humility and you can laugh at it. At the end of the movie, you see all of the RIPs we put on there. ... This has been around long enough that we’ve lost many, many rappers. I wanted to catch this now.
It seems now like we’re seeing the emergence of the first MCs to be born into hip-hop, whereas all of the people in the movie saw the beginning of it.
Yeah, and you know there will be a Part Two [to this movie]. I don’t know if I’ll do it. The next generation will write their legacy down. It wasn’t time for me to go out and really start the movie with the new artists. I have to start it where I started, and my trek was that I was an L.A. rapper and I moved to New York and New York kind of put me in the game, and they told me that this requires skills. They also taught me you’ve got to respect it. They said, “If we’re going to let you into hiphop and we’re going to give you the cosign, Ice-T, never turn your back on it, never disrespect this, because this is something that’s serious.” I try

to do this with the film. The film does have a serious and reverential tone, but there are also times when you’re laughing at yourself, reminiscing about even the name of your first crew, which I’ll have to remind readers was called the Eliminators
Pimpin’ Association.
[Laughs] The funny thing about that is that us — me and Lord Jama — we’re naming off who we were before you ever heard of Ice-T. I was saying those rhymes before I even knew about rap, we were just the Eliminators Pimpin’ Association, trying to talk some s—, and he was Kid Magic. Do you have a lot of old rhymes that you’re able to laugh at?
The rhymes I used to say, I would say them for the gang members, and it was like a form of what they called toasting back in the day. You say a rhyme and they would be entertained, and there was no music. And when I first heard the music, I was like, “I can do that! I’m already doing that!” PAT HEALY

guess. I remember hair spray and lots of Dippity-do. My first record was “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” by AC/DC. When I was in my 20s, there was that weird ’70s nostalgia when bell-
bottoms came back in; there’s kind of a similar thing with the ’80s now. To me, the ’80s were just kind of fun memories because nothing’s really gone wrong yet in your life, so all the music is very nostalgic for me, too.

Screenwriter and co-star of the new indie film opening Friday chats with us about the differences between what men and women want
‘Lola Versus’ modern dating A ctress, screenwriter and producer Zoe ListerJones has been in a committed relationship with her writing partner Daryl Wein for several years, but that doesn’t mean she’s been oblivious to how the modern dating environment has changed. Her sharp observations are sprinkled throughout the couple’s latest film, “Lola Versus,” in which a woman approaching 30 (Greta Gerwig) is suddenly dumped by her fiance and forced to start over in the dating dungeon that is New York City. “Guys are always looking for something better,” Lister-Jones says. “I think a lot of men find validation through how beautiful the woman they can sleep with is, and women find validation more in being loved. Women have a less superficial set of standards that apply in the dating world. If a guy is really funny or interesting or smart, all of those things play a much heavier hand in terms of what I think women find attractive.” Lister-Jones can drop the truth bombs that easily. She and Wein were moved to write the script for the very Woody Allen-esque romantic comedy after hearing so many war stories from their friends. Take note: One character in the film is a prison architect who enjoys making love to Ani DiFranco’s

“Both Hands.” For people who have dated here, that actually sounds quite believable. “We really strive for authenticity in our films and to represent our generation in a way that feels relatable,” ListerJones explains. “Daryl and I write about modern relation-
ships, and for heterosexual modern relationships it’s helpful to have both genders’ perspective.” While the men and women that populate “Lola Versus” are all flawed and refreshingly three-dimensional, Lister-Jones, through the script, does take issue with one particular quirk she noticed in modern dating. “We know that there is somewhat of an epidemic of really cool, funny, interesting, beautiful single women who are not getting what they deserve,” she says. “When I was in an open relationship with Daryl, I got to experience the single life — and it just was like, bleak and brutal. I was just like, ‘Get me out of here, I want nothing to do with this.’” HEIDI PATALANO

performance art, but that would only be accurate if someone actually performed in this pastiche. It’s hard to tell what was more irritating: Sandler’s
sketch acting style, Andy Samberg’s unfunny, wussy role, the pedophilia and incest motifs or the desperate, forced “edginess” of the movie. But like a train wreck, you can’t look away. Would this movie be more palatable if Sandler dropped the grating accent? What if they recast the role with Steve Carell in the lead? It would still smell. The whole movie is dripping in ’80s and ’90s nostalgia — probably the decades when Sandler’s comedy made most sense. MARK BRESLIN

Madonna, Gwyneth, Lisa Marie Presley: All-American girls gone Brit-crazy. For Presley, there’s one particular aspect of being an Anglophile that she likes: the local pub. “There are lots of pubs near where we live in Sussex, but there’s one that’s become my local,” says Presley. “I love that I can walk in there and see everyone in the village. I never got that social aspect of it until I lived here. I love to go in and say hello to people. And I love Guinness.” The Memphis belle’s first new album in seven years, the rootsy Americana set “Storm and Grace,” is being hailed as a

Sure there are leaps, tumbles, aerials and acrobatic feats that make you gasp, wondering how any human being can do that. And if what you’re looking for is incredible athleticism, razzle dazzle and a big dance party finish that feels like a big musical theater moment, you’ll love “TOTEM.” But if you’ve ever been blown away by the trampolines, high-flying trapeze work and incredibly synchronistic, nearly mind-blowing finish of a Cirque du Soleil production, you, too, might be a bit disappointed. There are two separate Hoops Dancer pieces that feel more like filler than substance and a lengthy scene called “Manipulation” that’s definitely short on showmanship and decidedly dull. The five unicyclists tossing bowls on each other’s heads without using their hands could be shorter and definitely needs work on the precision of its execution. The island venue will be new to some of the bands. “That’s probably the part we are looking forward to the most, says Luke Mulholland of The Luke Mulholland Band, who will perform this Saturday. A
h, barbecue season! The days are longer, the fireflies are twinkling and the grill is raring to go. But if the thought of going anywhere near a propane tank sends you shivers colder than an ice cream brain freeze, fear not: Emeril Lagasse, star chef, restaurateur and cookbook author, is here to help. He outlines the mistakes grillers make and how to avoid them. Not having enough fat on your meat: “You have to have a
good percentage of fat,” Lagasse says. “You’ve gotta have at least 10 to 15 percent fat or it’s not gonna be great.” Not letting your meat settle:
“We season ground meat and we overwork it. We never let the air come out of it and let it rest. Immediately after we overwork it we just put them right on the grill and we wonder, what happened to this burger? If you season it the night before and then take the meat out, let it get to room temperature, then shape it into burgers, then put them on the grill, it makes a huge difference.” Constantly flipping a burger:
BostonGlobe.com/insiders
“People are constantly flipping the burger over and pressing on the burger,” he says. “Leave the burger alone. Let it cook one side and then turn it over. Don’t press the
juices out of it.” Layering your burger the wrong way: When Julia Child
came on Lagasse’s show, she gave him a lesson in burger prep that he now passes on. “If the burger doesn’t touch one part of the bun, then the burger’s gonna slide,” he says. “What a lot of people do is put lettuce, tomato, and then they put the burger, and then they dress the other side of the bun and, then they put the onion on top of that, and they put the bun on it, so the meat really doesn’t have any friction. You take a bite and it’s almost in your lap. Julia explained to me that one part of the burger has to touch the bun and then you can build it from there.” Grilling fish wrong: “The biggest mistake that people make is that the grill is too hot. It should be more like depending on what type of fish — steak or more of a filet,” says the chef, who recommends a fish spatula for handling the delicate protein. And before you even fire up the grill, let your fish settle as you would meat. “Take your protein out of the refrigerator for at least 20 minutes, and let it just come up to room temperature. Then, brushing it with oil on both sides and then seasoning it is the key.” MEREDITH ENGEL

Can we acknowledge sad Olympics past? It will be exactly 40 years since the massacre of Israeli athletes during the Olympic Games, but still the Olympic Committee refuses to devote one minute of silence to their memories. That is quite disgusting, and with the inclusion of one minute of silence in the 2012 Olympics, that disgraceful disregard of murder during the world’s most peaceful international activity will finally end — but only if you raise your voice to make it a reality. Please do. DAVID KRONFELD, VIA E-MAIL
They want to steal all that we’ve got RE: “TITLING ENTITLEMENT”: I see Sam Khoury is back in the letters, and he again lies about the plans of the Repub-
licans. They always talk of Social Security as an entitlement program and they want to cut it now, even though it can pay full benefits for 25plus years. It is most certainly part of the safety net, as it pays survivor and disability benefits. And forget waste — they want to stop us from drawing down the $3 trillion dollars we have loaned the government from our FICA payments, all of which went to pay for tax cuts to the rich and for wars against brown people. They’ve got our money, and they intend to keep it. KEVIN DOWD, VIA E-MAIL

to blame capitalism. Our economic system has given the most to our citizens as compared to any other system, especially socialism. Perhaps leftists would be happier in communist North Korea or maybe in a place like Jonestown where that socialist monster Jim Jones snuffed out 900 lives with his Marxism. Is this what leftists want? If so, maybe I can help them with the plane fare. Kelly Donnoe once again speaks of what I can only assume is another universe since it doesn’t come close to matching the real facts. First off: Over the past few decades we have seen massive increases in American employee productivity, yet no increase in wages. Second: All the profit made from that increased

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. One secret to success is to give others what you desire, which would be a good course for you today. You’ve heard it before: If you want friends, be friendly. If you need help, aid others. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Something unusual might transpire that will be of enormous importance to you but not necessarily to anybody else — but don’t let that stop you. productivity has gone right to CEOs and other top business executives in order to “retain the talent” that is solely responsible for massive losses, companies crumbling, billions in fraud and generally the destruction of the American economy and dream. Third: When 98 percent of a country lives in poverty the country lacks something needed for a strong economy — something called disposable income, which allows people to buy the products companies make, which is how a company makes profit. So Kelly Donnoe I would suggest you not only take an economics class, but you need to get up to speed on the facts of this universe, since we have seen for decades and especially recently that unions have been in decline — and with them, the size of the American middle class into poverty. Furthermore, during this decline the amount of money unions could pour into politics was dwarfed by business even before the Citizens United case. DOUGLAS P BROWN II,

Endless cliches set for Red Sox-Cubs Overplayed story lines will surely dominate this weekend of baseball at Wrigley Field Theo’s Cubs are arguably the worst team in the majors DAVID BANKS/GETTY IMAGES
Ready for an avalanche of tired narratives? Even though these teams are both in last place in their respective divisions heading into this weekend interleague series, they will still receive a lion’s share of national attention. Predictably, Saturday night’s game is on FOX (7:15 p.m.) and Sunday night’s game is on ESPN (8 p.m.). With that in mind, it would be almost too easy to construct a drinking game based on words, events and people that you’ll hear repeated over and over again. Theo Epstein (former Red Sox GM, now Cubs president), Bill Buckner, Steve Bartman, Babe Ruth, a billy goat and Curse of the Bambino are the prop bet favorites for being mentioned the most by Tim McCarver, Joe Buck, Ken Rosenthal, Terry Francona, Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser this weekend. You are also sure to hear that Wrigley Field was built in 1916 (second oldest park in MLB behind Fenway) and the Cubs haven’t won a World Series in only 103 years.
More annoying fan base, who ya got? You might think that we have the market cornered on pink hats and insufferable fans but Chicago can surely give Sox fans a good run for their Fenway bricks. If Fenway has become an amusement park in recent years then Wrigley most closely resembles a college party. I’m convinced that many of the fans that shuffle into Wrigley summer after summer do it mostly for the social aspect: You drink some cheap, watered-down beer in the bleachers, make some new friends and try not to get heat stroke. If that’s not bad enough, the Cubs feature the one song that can rival the nauseating “Sweet Caroline” at Fenway. During the seventh-inning stretch, the Cubs have a
Theo talk will dominate the weekend.
Number of wins the Cubs had as of 21 Thursday. Their 21-41 record is an MLB worst. The Red Sox are 31-32 on the season.
“celebrity” sing perhaps the most played out baseball related song in the universe: “Take Me Out To the Ballgame.”
Oh, right: The games This series will be fun because it’s the first time since 2005 that the Red Sox have played at Wrigley. Odds are that we’ll never see that dream Red SoxCubs World Series in our lifetime, so this will have to do. Because the Cubs are the worst team in MLB (heading into Thursday’s action), the Red Sox need to win at least two of three. Friday’s starting pitcher for Chicago, Ryan Dempster (23, 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP), is having a great season but his team can’t win games behind him. Wide receiver Jeff Samardzija (5-4, 3.96 ERA, 1.35 WHIP), who gets the ball on Saturday for the Cubs and is matched up against Jon Lester, is proving that choosing pro baseball over pro football was certainly a wise decision. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick ended minicamp one practice early Thursday, much to the surprise of his players. “It was a shocker,” Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch said. “Coach keeps us on our toes.” Belichick touched on several hot topics with the media, including swiping tight end Jake Ballard from the Giants and the proposed practice sessions with the New Orleans Saints. “(Ballard) was here (Wednesday) afternoon. I talked to him, and we’ll move along with his rehab,” Belichick said. As for a potential joint prac-
