Where have all the protesters gone? BIO conference returns to Boston this week Conference that once drew thousands in opposition may only see handful of protesters this week Organizers say families, timing are key factors for participants GETTY IMAGES

An international biotechnology conference that once drew thousands of passionate protesters to Boston 12 years ago may only see a handful of chanters during a return visit to the Hub this week. The four-day BIO International Convention, a gathering of biotechnology leaders from around the world, kicks off today at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in South Boston. More than 16,000 people are expected to attend and contribute nearly $27 million to the local economy. But, as they have in years past, those biotechnology industry leaders will be welcomed by a group of protesters who are planning a rally this morning for the start of the conference. Groups who have expressed their support and plan to participate in the protest include Occupy Monsanto, the Northeast Organic Farming Association and Occupy Boston. Rica Madrid, a member of Occupy Monsanto, said last week that she expected about 50 people to show up to the protest. As of yesterday afternoon, about 60 people were signed up on the group’s Facebook page to attend today.

By the numbers The opposition events held during the BIO convention’s visits to Boston has dwindled over the years:

2,500 According to reports at the time, about 2,500 costumed demonstrators marched through the Back Bay when the convention was held at the Hynes Convention Center in 2000.

150

About 150 people marched through the South End during a protest parade against the controversial Boston University disease research lab. The event was expected to be the biggest demonstration during the 2007 BIO convention, according to reports at the time.

100 Biotech Convention protestors set up a table and challenged convention attendees to a debate outside the Hynes Convention Center in March 2000. At the time, 2,500 protesters showed up.

“We really do hope it’s by the thousands.” RICA MADRID, OCCUPY MONSANTO MEMBER

“We really do hope it’s by the thousands — but to be real-

istic, I think a lot of people really do care, but conflicts are people’s families. And they don’t have a lot of time to come out to a demonstration on a Monday morning,” Madrid said. She also said a problem to attracting people to the protest is the lack of knowledge about the group’s cause: genetically

modified organisms in food. The group hopes to force companies to label food that includes genetically engineered ingredients. A Boston police spokesman said in an e-mail that police are aware the convention “may draw some opposition groups” and that the department has as-

DA: Appeal could lead to rapist release Suffolk County prosecutors are trying to keep a serial rapist behind bars after a recent ruling by the Massachusetts Appeals Court may allow him to be released from jail earlier than expected. The appeals judges ruled late last year in a split decision that Michael Johnson, 43, should not have been allowed to represent himself without counsel during his 2005 trial for a home invasion case. He was sentenced to between 33 and 40 years for that case. However, the ruling reversed his conviction. “Johnson — convicted of multiple violent felonies targeting young and elderly women — could return to society almost 30 years earlier than any sentencing judge expected,” prosecutors said in a

statement yesterday. On Friday, prosecutors filed paperwork for a hearing so they could seek their original sentence request for Johnson in a later rape trial. He was also convicted in 2010 for attacking three women in the South End, raping two of them. Although prosecutors sought a life sentence plus 40 years for Johnson, a judge sentenced him to between 17 and 20 years in jail because he was already serving the nearly 40year sentence for the earlier home invasion conviction. The Suffolk DA requested further appellate review of the decision on the home invasion case, but it was denied. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Greek pro-bailout parties set to win ruling majority ANDREAS SOLARO/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

Parties committed to Greece’s bailout were on course to secure a parliamentary majority yesterday and the radical leftists who had vied for first place conceded defeat in an election that could keep the debt-laden country in the euro zone. An official projection released by the interior ministry showed conservative New Democracy taking 29.5 percent, with the radical leftist SYRIZA bloc just behind on 27.1. The PASOK Socialists were set to take 12.3 percent of the vote. Because of a 50-seat bonus given to the party which comes first, that result would give New Democracy and PASOK 161 seats in the 300-seat parliament, in an alliance committed to a 130 billion euro ($164 billion) EU/IMF bailout keeping the country from bankruptcy. “I am relieved,” said smiling New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, leaving his office to joyous chants from supporters. Samaras said in a speech that the country would honor its commitments to its euro zone partners. Romney accuses Obama of political motivation on immigration Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said President Barack Obama’s decision to immediately stop deporting some illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children will make it more difficult to overhaul the immigration system in the long run. “We have to find a long-term solution, but the president’s action makes reaching a longterm solution more difficult,” Romney told reporters during a campaign swing in New Hampshire. “If I’m president, we’ll do our very best to have that kind of long-term solution that provides certainty and clarity for people who come into this country through no fault of their own by virtue of the action of their parents.” The new policy affects about 800,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. before age 16, have been in the country for at least five years, have no criminal record and are in school or have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Barack Obama’s decision to stop the deportation of some immigrant children wasn’t politically motivated and didn’t expand his executive powers, White House senior adviser David Plouffe said. Rodney King, 47, ‘made the world a better place’ Rodney King, who came to symbolize racial tensions in the United States after his 1991 beating at the hands of police led to deadly riots in Los Angeles a year later, was found dead in a swimming pool yesterday in Rialto, Calif., police said. He was 47. “Preliminary indications are that this is a drowning with no signs of foul play,” Rialto police said in a statement. King was discovered by his fiancee, said Rialto police Capt. Randy De Anda. The San Bernadino County coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy, authorities said. King’s death was reported to police yesterday morning in Rialto, about 50 miles east of Los Angeles. Police pulled his body from the swimming pool but were unable to resuscitate him, De Anda said. King became known around the world after he and some friends were stopped by Los Angeles police on March 3, 1991, following a high-speed chase. King was beaten by baton-wielding officers while a bystander videotaped them. The video prompted a national

Two of the officers were later convicted on federal charges of violating King’s civil rights and were sentenced to prison. After the riots King had a history of substance abuse and previously appeared on the U.S. cable TV program “Celebrity Rehab.” This year, two decades after the riots, King wrote a book titled “The Riot Within: My Journey from Rebellion to Redemption.” King, who has three children, was engaged to marry Cyn-

thia Kelley, a juror in the civil suit he brought against the city of Los Angeles, according to the biography that accompanied his book. The Los Angeles Times published a quote that King gave the newspaper earlier this year: “I would change a few things, but not that much. Yes, I would go through that night, yes I would. Federal officials are trying to persuade the private sector to fill some of the void to take the edge off the soaring national unemployment rate for teenagers.

Job-hunting teenagers in cities across the United States face the third bleak summer in a row. They must compete for scarce slots in scaled-back government work programs and against adults forced into lowpaying positions by the unemployment crisis. The harsh summer job market for teens is compounded by this: The country has recovered only half the jobs lost from December 2007 through June 2009, the worst recession in 70 years. Teens — often the last hired and first fired — suffered the toughest summers on the job front since World War II in 2010 and 2011. This summer, the outlook is chilly — again. In April, the U.S. unemployment rate for 16- to 19year-olds was 24.9 percent, and much higher in some major metropolitan areas.

“What I would ask people to think about is: Who gave you your first work experience? Almost every one of us had a break to get their first job, and that work experience is essential to get your second and third job,” said Larry Frank, Los Angeles deputy mayor of neighborhood and community services. Los Angeles — with the help of federal stimulus money — created around 15,000 summer jobs for teenagers in 2009 and 2010. But as the federal program ended, that was slashed to about 6,000 in 2011. It will not rise this year. It’s a similar story in other major cities. New York City had 52,000 summer jobs for teens in 2009. Now the program is half that size. It has five applicants for every job. REUTERS

Trimesters vs. semesters: Which works best for students? With growing concern over transferability, colleges are considering a standard schedule We asked two administrators to stick up for their preferred academic calendar Benefits and drawbacks of each system In defense of the trimester … Stuart J. Lipper is the dean of the graduate school of business administration at Fordham University in New York City. How did Fordham arrive at a trimester system?

The MBA has always been the largest master’s program at Fordham, and it was largely a part-time program. We wanted to make it as flexible as possible for people that had to work. But we’re not keeping it because ‘this is the way it’s always been done.’ Current students

like the flexibility. What are the drawbacks?

It makes the jobs of administrators a bit crazy. It can be hectic for students, too: Sometimes the semester ends on Friday and the new one starts on Monday. There’s not a lot of downtime. But you also complete the degree faster.

That’s the ultimate goal. Fulltime students can usually go through a program reasonably quickly. But in this program, part-time students can finish in three years.

In defense of the semester … Kate Lehman is the assistant dean for student success at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. How did Otterbein University arrive at a semester system?

We just switched from trimesters to semesters. We are placing an emphasis on experiential education — learning through real-world situations. Our faculty felt that semesters were better suited to this due to the extended time in a term. What are the drawbacks?

Some students like a shorter term so they can experience more topics over time. The sheer number of classes is fewer when you have fewer terms. Do trimesters work better for grad students, because they are typically more interested in finishing sooner?

Grad students take more summer courses than undergrads, and some of that is regardless of the calendar you’re operating under. But, yes, graduate students are more interested in going to school year-round. BRUCE WALSH

Biosensors to monitor students’attentiveness STOCKBYTE

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is pushing to develop an “engagement pedometer.” Biometric devices wrapped around the wrists of students would identify which classroom moments excite and interest them — and which fall flat. The foundation has given $1.4 million in grants to several university researchers to begin testing the devices in middleschool classrooms this fall. The biometric bracelets, produced by a Massachusetts startup company, Affectiva Inc., send a small current across the skin and then measure subtle changes in electrical charges as the sympathetic nervous system responds to stimuli. Gates officials hope the devices can become a common classroom tool, enabling teachers to see, in real time, which kids are tuned in and which are zoned out. Existing measures of student engagement, such as videotaping classes for expert review, “only get us so far,” said Debbie Robinson, a spokes-

Metro summer crush report We spend a lot of time scrolling through celebrity photo galleries for your enjoyment. But today, readers, this one is all for us. Here’s who we wish would stop by the Metro offices this summer: 1. K.Michelle had a hit in 2010 with “I Can’t Do This,” which would not be something this writer would ever say if K.Michelle stopped by the office. The singer, who is part of the VH1 show, “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” which premieres tonight, is curvy in all of the right places. PAT HEALY

2. There’s a reason Zac Efron’s sparkly blue eyes are in these pages so often — and it’s certainly not because he gives great quotes or stars in films we’re not paid enough to sit through.

4. British actor Tom Hardy is known for the quiet fierceness he brings to roles (see: “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and his “Warrior” muscles. He’ll be showing off his acting chops — and giant arms — this summer as bad guy Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

5. Not only is Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) incredibly talented at making off-kilter pop, she shreds on tear-your-throat-out covers of Big Black. HEIDI

For now, get your Shannyn fix in the upcoming video game “Hitman: Absolution.” JIM FENNER

Sandler finally gets R-rated The ‘That’s My Boy’ star is making his first foray into adult comedy Sandler reflects on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and leaving the show behind

NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Folks who aren’t the biggest fans of Adam Sandler’s brand of humor might find it hard to believe, but he’s never starred in an R-rated comedy — until his latest, “That’s My Boy, that is. While his rare dramatic efforts generally get the restricted rating, Sandler has stuck firmly in PG-13 territory when it comes to his comedies. And it’s paid off for him: In the past five years, only two films starring Sandler — the drama “Funny People and last year’s dismal “Jack and Jill — have grossed less than $100 million at the U.S. box office. So if playing to the middle school crowd had proved so lucrative for him, why risk ramping up the raunch now? “I’ve done some stuff in the past few years where I’ve cursed a bit and it felt good,

Sandler admits, though he says his decision to go with the R-rated “That’s My Boy was purely motivated by the story itself. “It was just a funny script. ... [Andy] Samberg actually called me up and told me that he liked it, and that got me excited. That’s it. But certainly, for Sandler, that’s not really it. After all, in the past few years R-rated comedies have become a viable proposition for studios once again, especially with the success of films like “The Hangover and “Bridesmaids. For a man that’s made millions keeping it clean, such a sea change couldn’t have gone unnoticed. “It was fun to speak the way that I speak in my bathroom, Sandler says. “I grew up cursing a lot. ... As for what advice he has for Samberg, Sandler warns that the hardest part will come this fall when ‘SNL’ returns without him. “I remember watching the show after I left and I was like, ‘Oh s—, they can do it without me! That hurts,’ he says.

While Anderson has a penchant for re-teaming with actors — aside from regular collaborator Murray, Anderson vet Jason Schwartzman pops up in “Moonrise Kingdom” as well — he doesn’t plan so far ahead that he writes for specific actors. “I try to focus on making a character and not be tailored to one person,” he says. “But most of this cast is people I had thought of before I finished the script. In books like “Dinosaur Brains,” “Am I the Only Sane One Working Here?” and “Neanderthals at Work,” he navigates the seamy underbelly of office politics through the lens of a trained psychologist. One of his most popular — “Emotional Vampires: Dealing with People Who Drain You Dry” — was re-released with added material last month. In “Vampires,” Bernstein offers strategies for dealing with known personality disorders. “I’m trying to help people recognize these kinds of people and to understand them, so they can decide for themselves whether they want to take them on or avoid them,” says Bernstein. “What I’m describing, essentially, are the things that make difficult people difficult. Nightmare bosses According to psychologist and author Albert J. Bernstein, those with two specific personality disorders often gravitate toward management. The narcissist: “There is plenty of narcissism without greatness, but no greatness without narcissism. Who would have the chutzpah to climb the ladder without it? But narcissists have very little idea of how they relate to other people. They are able to pull a curtain over one part of their personality and say, ‘This doesn’t matter.’ These people want constant adulation.” The histrionic: “They are experts at looking good, with very little substance. ... They’re the people that give us the motivational rallies. They’re cheerful. They look good. They’re can-do. But when it comes to resolving dilemmas, they’re not very good at making tough decisions. Gossip can negatively affect everyone at the office.

new Georgia Tech study by Eric Gilbert examined 600,000 e-mails from an Enron database and found that 15 percent were gossip e-mails. Most of it was negative. Gossip affects all employees, from the entry-level worker to the CEO. The average employee sends 112 e-mails each day. The number of emails and the amount of gossip will grow over the coming years due to how connected we are as a society, through mobile technology and social networking sites. our skills and experience certainly lend themselves to certain types of jobs — but they aren’t the only things you should consider when applying for a new position. Your satisfaction in a new job goes beyond simply being able to utilize your skills each day — you also need to consider who you’ll be working with, what the company is like and if you’ll be happy in the job, should you land it. So what else is important, you ask? Here are a few other aspects of a new job you need to consider before applying:

Consider your personality type You can learn a lot about your work style from discovering your personality type. Do you have a preference for extraver-

Things to consider before submitting a job application JAMES WOODSON

Type of management

Corporate culture

Everyone thrives in a different type of work environment, and much of that environment is about how you’re managed on a day-to-day basis. Do you need a manager who allows you to work independently? Or do you prefer someone checking in with you on a daily basis? If you’ll be working remotely most of the time, are you able to successfully self-manage? Think back to what worked and what did not work in your last position. Who is your ideal manager? What type of work environment will that person encourage each day?

sion or introversion? Do you require a quiet working environment, or do you thrive in a bustling environment with more distractions? How your personality type will mesh with colleagues and supervisors plays a part in job satisfaction, too.

What is the office environment like? What values are important to the company? Do you agree with them? How do they affect the day-to-day environment at the organization? You can investigate these aspects of an organization by visiting its website. You can also gain additional insight by browsing employee reviews on Glassdoor and Vault. Another aspect of the culture is the leadership. Do you admire and respect the top management at the organization? Do they make you want to work there? If you don’t, you may want to rethink your decision to apply at the company.

Work/life balance

Before you apply, make sure that the job will work for you.

What type of balance do you require? Will you be working significantly more hours than you did at your last job? What will your commute to this new job be like? Will the new position require frequent business trav-

eling or overtime hours? These factors can affect your home life and may introduce more stress if you don’t consider them before applying. Know your limits to ensure your next position is the right fit for you and your life outside of work.

Company stability In this economy, it never hurts to dig a little deeper on company growth and financial stability. This can help you determine whether or not you’ll be looking for a new job in the near future due to the company cutting back its workforce or shutting down altogether. Additionally, it pays to research the industry in order to figure out if it’s healthy. Is it expected to be around in the next 10 to 15 years, or is it on the decline? MONA ABDEL-HALIM FOR

Tips for getting out of a funk

A

For millions of adults like you, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a daily struggle, robbing you of the deep restful sleep you need to get through your day. Untreated OSA is also associated with an increased risk of serious health conditions, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and stroke.

MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2012

typical response to a bad mood is to try to force it to stop, but controlling your mood can actually make you feel worse. Pushing the discomfort away amplifies the feeling. Instead of swimming against the stream, swim with it. Learn to let your mood pass with these three simple steps.

ent in the experience. This step will help you accept whatever it is that you’re feeling.

Zen in the city GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN WWW.GABBYB.TV STOCKBYTE

Step 1: Honor how you feel

Right now, sleep specialists at Brigham & Women’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Program are conducting a research study of an investigational device for obstructive sleep apnea that may help. If you have OSA, and haven’t had lasting success with CPAP or other treatments, this study may be right for you.

Take the Next Step Space is limited. To see if this study may be right for you, call 1-888-975-3370 or visit www.SleepApneaTrial.com

The first step toward getting out of a bad mood is to honor your emotions. Find a comfortable, quiet space and sit for one minute of stillness. Become aware of how your body feels and how your mood is affecting you physically. Identify the tension in your body and take five deep breaths in and out. Breathe into the discomfort and allow yourself to be pres-

Are you a male 26 years old or older? Do you have problems with ejaculation (release of semen)? You may qualify for a study at Boston Medical Center looking at the effects of an investigational medication on ejaculation. You may qualify if: 1. 2. 3. 4.

You are unable to ejaculate (cum) It takes you a longer time to ejaculate You experience decreased force of ejaculation You think your semen volume is low Financial compensation up to $559 is provided.

Step 2: Flow with it

Now that you’re aware of how your mood feels in your body, it’s time to just flow with it. Take action by doing some kind of physical activity, like dancing, running or stretching. Move with your emotions, and eventually they will move through you. Step 3: Choose to let it go

A little optimism can go a long way on a crummy day.

Often we get stuck in a bad mood because we’re unwilling to let go of negative thoughts. Commit to letting go of your bad mood through the power of positive thinking. Set your alarm clock with the affirmation, “I choose happiness instead of this. Set this alarm

four times throughout the day. When the alarm goes off, recite the affirmation in your mind. Continue this step throughout the day. Your mental commitment combined with your breath can create miraculous shifts. — Gabrielle Bernstein is the author of “Spirit Junkie. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Baseball’s cheaters need to face justice If cyclist Lance Armstrong is found guilty of taking performance-enhancing drugs, his record-breaking achievements should be erased. The same should be done with baseball’s Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, both of whom should qualify for the same sad ending to their careers. End of story! HERB STARK, VIA E-MAIL

Why so scared of the rich, America? The convoluted logic of many Americans who are obsessed with the rich is scary. What can the rich do wrong with their money? What? Invest it? Spend it? Burn it? Some of you want the government to hire more people to spend the money of the rich. Yet you

are clueless that America is only second to Japan in corporate taxes, which makes smart businessmen want to pay their taxes elsewhere. Obama ignores the fact that raising capital gains reduces overall tax revenues because “it isn’t fair!” Our government is a cancer, continuing to grow, its cells interfering with healthy capitalist cells. JOSEPH DUPONT, VIA E-MAIL

On immigration: Obama goes too far President Obama has just announced a new immigration policy that would give young people who are here illegally by no fault of their own and have committed no crimes a chance to stay in America. They will be able to study and to work here and would receive a green card and not

fear deportation. The president said it was “the right thing to do.” I applaud his sentiments, but he is going the wrong way about this issue — and that, I find most disturbing. President Obama has said in the past that only Congress has the power to enact such a policy through legislation. Now what has changed? Oh I know, this is an election year for the president. In my opinion, I feel that President Obama is not following the Constitution by side-stepping Congress. President Obama needs to review the Constitution and especially Article II, Section 1, the president’s oath of office. I think the president should be more concerned with the U.S. workers who need jobs than those who are here illegally. FREDERICK R. BEDELL JR., VIA E-MAIL

It has been said that a nation can survive its fools, but not treason from within. President Obama’s flouting of immigration laws, in my opinion, borders on treason.

Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. Make certain that you’re diplomatic and fair in handling those you have some authority over. If you single out one person to blame and ignore the others, there will be trouble. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Be organized in the ways you intend to fulfill your ambitions. Don’t give up a known value in hopes of getting something of uncertain or mysterious worth. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. Suppress any of your possessive tendencies for the time being. If you discover you’ve behaved badly, the fuss you make to correct matters likely won’t soothe the feelings of the people you hurt. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Before extending to a friend an impromptu invitation to come to your place, check with the family first to make sure they haven’t made conflicting plans. Aries March 21-April 19. In order to perform at your best, handle things one step at a time. Trying to rush a job is likely to greatly reduce your efficiency and slow you down. Taurus April 20-May 20. This Federal Administration is out of control. Obama circumvents Congress to make his own laws allowing regulations on the citizens, enacting hidden taxes on the people, gun running to Mexican drug gangs, discriminating against his opponents (by party, race, business or organization), leaking national secrets, turning our allies against us and jeopardizing lives of our front-line operatives, stonewalling congressional investigations and generally disturbing the moral social makeup of America by bending over for the perverts and racists out there, allowing immigrants a free ride over citizens and interfering with our churches. What’s wrong with citizens who support a creep like this president is?

June swoon or bloom? This week’s homestand will prove pivotal in terms of what the Red Sox will do at trading deadline in late July Team’s starting pitching showing glimpses but has no consistency GETTY IMAGES

The Red Sox return to Fenway Park this week for their final six games of interleague play. Returning to the friendly confines against the Marlins from tomorrow through Thursday and Braves over the weekend allows the Red Sox to reintroduce the designated hitter to their lineup, but still does nothing to settle the corner infield-outfield platoon of Kevin Youkilis, Will Middlebrooks and David Ortiz, all three of whom have struggled at the plate recently.

Ryan’s Return Ryan Kalish, who played 53 games for the Red Sox in 2010, was recalled from Pawtucket on Sunday and will be available this week. .378 The outfielder hit .378 and had four homers in just nine games with the PawSox since June 5.

WEDNESDAY Felix Doubront (7-3, 4.17) vs. Ricky Nolasco (6-5, 4.37)

Here is a look at the six-game homestand:

The young left-hander continues to mature for the Red Sox, also beating Miami in his last start, allowing two runs in seven innings. Doubront is holding opponents to a .245 batting average this season. Nolasco lost to the Red Sox last week, allowing four runs in six innings. The Red Sox offense could enjoy his presence at Fenway, as Nolasco has allowed at least one homer in each of his past four starts.

TOMORROW Clay Buchholz (7-2, 5.38 ERA) vs. Mark Buehrle (5-7, 3.41)

LT to retire Former NFL MVP (2006) and the fifthleading rusher in league history will retire today, according to multiple reports. The 2001 draft pick of the Chargers will sign a one-day contract with San Diego before his formal announcement.

Buchholz has finally turned the corner this season, going 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA over his last four starts. Last week against the Marlins, Buchholz allowed just one run in seven innings. Buchholz is 4-1 at Fenway this season, but his home ERA stands at 5.12. Buehrle, the former White Sox player, lost his first interleague decision in his last 11 against the Red Sox, but pitched well in the process, holding the Red Sox to one hit in the first six innings before allowing two runs in the seventh.

gery and could be a huge factor for the Red Sox in the second half if he can continue to throw strikes and stay out of big innings. Zambrano has struggled lately. In his past two starts against the Rays, he allowed 11 runs combined and lasted a total of 4 1/3 innings.

FRIDAY Jon Lester (4-4, 4.53 ERA) vs. TBD

Brandon Beachy was the scheduled starter for the Braves, but won’t be available after leaving Saturday’s game against the Orioles with an elbow injury. Lester has made three straight quality starts after struggling in late May.

SATURDAY TBA vs. Randall Delgado (4-6, 4.34)

Franklin Morales took the ball for the Red Sox in Sunday night’s game against the Cubs, but the Red Sox will likely explore a better option for Saturday.

SUNDAY THURSDAY Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 5.73) vs. Carlos Zambrano (4-5, 3.92) Ryan Kalish is expected to be climbing the walls at Fenway once again this week.

More outfield help may be on the way for Sox

Carl Crawford is “close” to returning.

Carl Crawford’s elbow injury during the spring never hindered his ability to hit. The Sox outfielder could get by at the plate with his sprained elbow, but throwing a baseball has been an entirely different story these past few months. Today, it looks as though Boston’s 142 million-dollar man is finally close to returning to the playing field after missing every game of the 2012 regular season thus far. “I’ve got to think he’s close to playing in a baseball game,” Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said this past weekend. Schilling taking leave from ESPN Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is taking a leave of absence from his role as an analyst on ESPN’s MLB coverage. ESPN expects Schilling to return later this season.

Schilling is reportedly being sued for $2.4 million by Citizens Bank in loans made to 38 Studios, Schilling’s video game company. Bard, several others may get nod Cook, Germano, Duckworth could be called up quickly from minors Each spring the Red Sox talk about pitching depth, as does every team in baseball. It’s a necessity, but also carries with it a bit of a stigma. An organization hopes it never has to test that pitching depth, for that means that something has gone wrong at the top. With Josh Beckett’s shoulder injury coming just over a week after the Daniel Bard demotion, the organization’s ability to stockpile reserve pitching options is at a premium. That means fans have to get used to unsexy names making big starts where Beckett once stood and getting big outs that Franklin Morales, who took Beckett’s start Sunday in Chicago, once had to get out of the bullpen. And so on. So how well equipped are the Red Sox to weather the storm? All things considered, not very well. Daisuke Matsuzaka’s return was timed quite well to atone for Bard’s plunge to Pawtucket. However, there’s nothing to suggest things will remain static till Beckett is back. In addition to Morales, here are some names you may hear about in the near future:

Aaron Cook: The veteran right-

hander, who suffered a lacerated leg in his only start of the year for Boston, is close to beginning a rehab assignment. He earned a call-up earlier in the year in part because he went 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA for Pawtucket. Justin Germano: A journeyman

who owns a 5.50 ERA in 36 career major league starts, Germano may not be the most appetizing option on paper. But he is familiar with the big league landscape and usually throws strikes — the 29-yearold has walked 10 in 83 innings for the PawSox this season, going 8-3 with a 2.49 ERA through Saturday. Brandon Duckworth: He’s 36,

hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2008 and has an ERA at Pawtucket over 4.00. Still, Duckworth, like Cook, has experience that will allow him to shrug aside the bright lights if and when his name is called. He’s made 84 career starts in the majors. TONY LEE

Lloyd was one of many additions at the wide receiver position, but with the releases of Chad Ochocinco and Anthony Gonzalez, it’s clear he’s the go-to guy on the outside for New England. He’s already familiar with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ offense, having played for him on the Broncos and Rams, so the transition to New England should be seamless. NATE SOLDER The Patri-

ots drafted Nate Solder in the first round last year with every intention of playing him at left tackle once Matt Light retired. Well, that time is now. Light has officially called it a career and now perhaps the most important position on the team is in the hands of the secondyear Solder. Brady being a righty, his back is usually turned to pass-rushers coming around the left outside edge. That’s where a guy like Solder has to step up and prevent the blind hit or strip sack. Can he be that guy? He started in 13 games last season, and seemed to have held his own.

JOSEPH ADDAI When BenJarvus Green-Ellis signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, the Patriots were left with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Danny Woodhead at tailback. Woodhead has done a commendable job in his role with the team, but he’s not much more than a third-down back. Ridley and Vereen are too young and inexperienced to be depended on yet. Enter Joseph Addai, who the Pats signed to a one-year deal in May. Addai has rushed for 4,453 yards and 39 touchdowns in his career and is entering his seventh season in the NFL.
