The black bear that was caught in Brookline yesterday was the same one that roamed Cape Cod towns for weeks until he was captured there June 12, state officials said. After his capture on the Cape, state wildlife officials tagged him and relocated him to Central Massachusetts. But apparently that wasn’t far enough and he trekked about one-third of the state over two weeks to make his way back to the eastern part of the state. Officials relocated him even further away this time to a location in Western Massachusetts where the 200-pound nearly 3-year-old bear will be

BOSTON. The MBTA plans to ap-

peal a Suffolk County jury’s decision last week to award $1.2 million to a Scituate woman injured in a 2009 Green Line trolley crash, a T spokesman said yesterday. Colleen Fyffe, then age 46, was among 49 people sent to the hospital when the trolley crashed because the operator was texting his girlfriend. The accident destroyed $10 million worth of Green Line cars and prompted the MBTA to ban drivers from carrying cell phones on the job. Train operator and Quincy

State environmental officials estimated the state’s black bear population has been growing at a rate of between 5 and 8 percent annually since 2005.

monitored and released. Officials said the same bear was sighted in Middleborough before he was found on the Cape and that bear sightings in Eastern Massachusetts communities, including Needham, Dedham and Walpole, have been reported recently. Officials could not confirm whether the Brookline bear was the same one spotted in any of those towns. Tom O’Shea, the state’s assistant director for wildlife, said the bear likely went unnoticed for much of his trek back east because there are large blocks of forest areas in Greater Boston and that he

likely came east looking for new land. “Some young male bears, they tend to seek new territories,” said O’Shea. “We think (Eastern Massachusetts) is a reasonably unoccupied territory for young bears.” Officials said another reason the bear returned east is that the state’s black bear population is growing. About 3,000 black bears were estimated to be in the state in 2005 and that number may have grown to 4,000 by now, officials said. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

At about the time state environmental officials shot the bear with a tranquilizer dart he tweeted “Is that a tranquilizer gun or a squirt gun? Cause I’m sorta hot.” The very next tweet seemed to summarize his day. “Ouch.”

Romney and Obama trade barbs over Youk BOSTON. The Red Sox have not

been short on controversy since the end of last season and a former player entered the realm of political controversy yesterday. The trade of infielder Kevin Youkilis to President Barack Obama's hometown team, the Chicago White Sox, prompted a dust-up between the president and his rival, former Bay State Gov. Mitt Romney. Obama thanked Boston for Youkilis during a speech at Symphony Hall Monday. The comment triggered some boos and “Youk” chants.

Romney’s campaign said Obama made an “error” by taunting Sox fans over the trade. However, Obama’s spokesman said that the crowd was chanting “Youk” and not “boo.” He said that Obama was also not going to pretend he isn’t a White Sox fan. METRO/GLOBE

T bus crashes into building An MBTA spokesman said an Amesbury motorist will be cited for making a U-turn in Roxbury, cutting off an MBTA bus and causing it to crash into a building at around 10:24 p.m. Monday. Richard Thompson, 55, told transit police that he realized he was headed in the wrong direction on Tremont

Street, so he signaled to make a lane change before hitting the bus. The bus was carrying 15 people when it crashed into the Whittier Health Center, a new five-story building at the corner of Tremont and Prentiss streets. The Boston Fire Department reported that two pas-

sengers were taken to the hospital, and that while the building was empty at the time, the crash burst a sprinkler pipe. Police said the driver’s side door hit the front right corner of the bus. The $37-million, 78,900square-foot facility opened six months ago. METRO/GLOBE

A Quincy man was charged yesterday for allegedly stashing a loaded gun, which is now missing, in the bushes of a Boston playground. “If the facts as we understand them are true, this was an act of staggering irresponsibility,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley yesterday. “It means there’s yet another loaded gun on the streets of Boston, ready to be used in a robbery, a shooting, or worse.” John T. Murrett, 26, was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on one count of improper storage of a firearm. Prosecutors recommended bail of $500 and Judge Annette Forde released him on his own recognizance. The charge stems from a Saturday night incident in Boston’s Theater District, when Murrett tried to enter Club Royale with a Ruger LC9 semiautomatic handgun, Conley said. Club security found the gun when they patted down Murrett, and he presented his valid license to carry. He was turned away because the club does not allow guns.

Murrett

That’s when Murrett walked a few blocks north on Tremont Street, allegedly stashed the gun under a bush at a nearby playground, then returned to the club and was allowed inside. Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Murrett told club security the gun was stolen from his car, and asked if anyone turned it in, Conley said. When security called police, Conley said Murrett admitted that he hid it in the bushes, but that it was no longer there. According to Conley, Murrett told police, “I always carry a firearm everywhere I go,” and added that the gun was loaded with “seven bullets in the mag and one in the chamber” when he last saw it. Boston Police searched for the gun, but could not find it. They arrested Murrett and seized his license to carry. Conley urged anyone who knows the whereabouts of the firearm, or any other illegal firearm, to contact police. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

New development good for business, but bad for traffic? Innovation District to add thousands of residential units to waterfront Will it make the gridlock worse? City officials yesterday broke ground on a new, 20-story luxury rental residence on Congress Street. Waterside Place, a 350,000 square foot mixed use project, will be adjacent to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, the Seaport World Trade Center and the MBTA Silver Line. While the development will usher about 800 construction jobs and roughly 400 new residents into the growing Innovation District, many fear it will be a magnet for something else — more traffic.

An innovative neighborhood The Innovation District encompasses 1,000 acres of residential, commercial and industrial space along the South Boston waterfront. Mayor Menino predicts that by the end of the year there will be as many as 1,000 housing units under construction. in the Innovation District. METRO/MR

Massport Acting Chief Development Officer Jim Doolin said the city has accounted for the additional traffic that comes with long-term growth, but added much of the traffic that exists in the district now will likely be driven out with higher parking prices. “It is a comfort that the bulk of people who drive to the district won’t be driving there in the future because they will not be parking there," Doolin said. “When you look at the South Boston waterfront peninsula, in the surface parking lots many of

the people who park there today park and walk downtown because it is inexpensive parking. In the future, parking will be in garages and under buildings, and the price of parking will be considerably higher,” he said. Doolin added that the motorists parking in those lots will be people who live and work in the new developments. Motorist Ira Weinman works at International Place, but parks about a half-mile away in a lot off of Seaport Boulevard, which, at 5:30 p.m.

is often gridlocked. “Yeah, traffic is a concern, but my bigger concern is where am I going to park and not spend a boatload of money. Unless these (new) buildings have underground parking that is on the cheap, it’s going to make the cost of parking so much more money. That to me is a much bigger concern.” Waterside Place construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2013. MORGAN ROUSSEAU letters@metro.us

Obama celebrates major win as court backs EPA’s greenhouse gas rules GETTY IMAGES

Obama

A U.S. appeals court yesterday upheld the first-ever U.S. proposed rules governing heattrapping greenhouse gases, clearing a path for sweeping regulations affecting vehicles, coal-burning power plants and other industrial facilities. Handing a setback to industry and a victory to the Obama administration, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia unanimously ruled the Environmental Protection Agency’s finding that carbon dioxide is a public danger and the decision to set limits for emissions from cars and light trucks were “neither arbitrary nor capricious.” The ruling, which addresses four separate lawsuits, upholds

the underpinnings of the Obama administration’s push to regulate carbon dioxide emissions, and is a rebuke to a major push by heavy industries including electric utilities, coal miners and states like Texas to block the EPA’s path. In the 82-page ruling, the three-judge panel also found that the EPA’s interpretation of the Clean Air Act to regulate carbon dioxide regulations is “unambiguously correct.” The court also said it lacked jurisdiction to review the timing and scope of greenhouse gas rules that affect stationary sources like new coal-burning power plants and other large industrial sources. Tape of Sandusky son alleging abuse released PATRICK SMITH/GETTY IMAGES

Jerry Sandusky’s adult adopted son told police he had lied to a grand jury when he denied being sexually abused by the former Penn State University assistant football coach and said he was coming forward so his family would know the truth, according to a tape of his police interview aired by NBC yesterday. Matt Sandusky, 33, said in the interview with police in Pennsylvania he was molested by Jerry Sandusky, 68, off and on from ages 8 to 15 and tried to cope by escaping from his new family’s home and attempting to commit suicide. Jerry Sandusky was convicted in a closely watched trial by a jury in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, last Friday on 45 child sex abuse charges linked to the sexual abuse of

Facebook gets first woman board member SAN FRANCISCO. Facebook Inc. named Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg a director yesterday, elevating the first woman to a board that includes seven men. For years one of the most vocal critics of the gender imbalance in Silicon Valley’s executive ranks, Sandberg, 42, joined Facebook in 2008 and played a central role in

guiding the social networking company to its $16 billion IPO in May. Her promotion comes as Facebook seeks to cultivate a more mature image as opposed to the college dormroom startup reputation that has dogged the company since Harvard dropout Mark Zuckerberg founded it in 2004.

Shortly after jury deliberations began, a lawyer for Matt Sandusky said the adopted son had met with prosecutors to tell them that he, too, had been sexually abused by the former coach, despite his previous denials.

Pregnancy the No. 1 killer of teen girls Teenage pregnancy is responsible for more than a million deaths each year in the developing world, according to a new report from Save the Children. The relief group found that 50,000 teenage mothers die during childbirth, making it the leading cause of death for this age group worldwide, and a further 79,000 die from related causes. The group estimates that 900,000 babies die as a result of being born to teenage parents, as they are more likely to suffer disease or

News Corp. may split into two News Corp. is considering breaking up the company into two publicly held entities after a phone-hacking scandal at its U.K. newspapers increased pressure to cordon off the publishing business. Rupert Murdoch, News Corp.’s chairman and CEO, is overseeing internal discussions on whether to split publishing from the New York-based company’s entertainment business, said two people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified because a decision isn’t final. Murdoch is contemplating the breakup — a move some investors have sought for years — after a hacking scandal threatened the company’s holdings in satellite-TV company British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc. President wants your wedding gifts Hey, engaged couples: Forget registering at William Sonoma or Bed, Bath & Beyond — President Obama wants you to remember that there are more important things in life than asking your wedding guests to buy you ice cream makers and George Foreman grills — you know, like donating money to his re-election campaign. That’s right, if you don’t want your guests spending money of you for your upcoming wedding, President Obama encourages you to ask them to spend it on him instead. His official website BarackObama.com has rolled out the Obama Event Registry. “Let your friends know how important this election is to you — register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation

in lieu of a gift. It’s a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate— and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl, the site says. Critics took to the comment forum to voice their displeasure at the president’s registry proposal, though many comments have been deleted. “Is this what the office of the President of the United States has come to? Pandering for wedding and birthday money? one person asked. “Won’t be long before we start seeing, “In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bo’s re-election campaign or another party with the hollywood elite for our celebrityinc-chief and his family, another person added. Democrats canceled a political convention kickoff event at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and will move the activities to Charlotte’s main business district. “While we regret having to move CarolinaFest away from our great partners at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the city of Concord, we are thrilled with the opportunity that comes with hosting this event in Uptown Charlotte, said Dan Murrey, the executive director of the Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee. The move comes as party planners are grappling with a fundraising deficit of roughly $27 million, according to two people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity. With a party ban on direct contributions from corporations, the host committee has raised less than $10 million, well short of its $36.6 million goal. BLOOMBERG

Pig-tailed facts

Tropical Storm Debby weakened as it drifted ashore on Florida's Gulf Coast yesterday, dumping more rain on flooded areas and sending thousands of people fleeing from rising rivers. After stalling in the Gulf for two days, the large and ragged storm finally began moving eastward. The center crossed the shore late yesterday afternoon near Steinhatchee, in the Big Bend area where the Panhandle joins the peninsula. Most of the thunderstorms and rain were northeast of the storm center and had already dumped 2 feet of rain over parts of Florida. Forecasters at the National

Hurricane Center said Debby could bring another 4 to 8 inches of rain — and possibly tornadoes — to north Florida and southeast Georgia in the next two days. Debby's top winds weakened to 40 miles per hour, just over the threshold to remain a tropical storm. It is expected to weaken further as it moves inland but could strengthen again into a tropical storm as it crosses into the Atlantic Ocean, the forecasters said. Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency on Monday and ordered all state agencies, including the Florida National Guard, to provide any necessary assistance requested by local governments. REUTERS

John Stamos wants to settle down — really John Stamos has a reputation as

or writer and director Lynn Shelton’s latest, “Your Sister’s Sister,” she enlisted the help of stars Emily Blunt, Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt — and gave them all creative consultant credits on the heavily improvised project, about a pair of estranged sisters (Blunt and DeWitt) and a male pal (Duplass) stuck in a mourning-fueled emotional ditch. Shot for a scant $80,000 in 12 days on an island outside Seattle, the picture was a bonding experience for the four of them, to put it mildly. “My No. 1 guidepost when I’m making these films is believability,” Shelton says. “I want to create characters who you really believe in, who feel real and resonate. I really want you to recognize the people onscreen and have them be fully human and therefore fully flawed because we’re all cracked vessels.” Duplass, who has developed quite the roster of flawed characters in films like Shelton’s “Hump Day” and his own projects with his brother, sees an odd appeal to the less-thanperfect.

“It’s great that you have people identifying with sort of morally and ethically questionable protagonists in this film,” he says. “They’re very human, they’re very flawed, but hopefully what we’ve done is provided in-roads to them so you can identify with those flaws in a way.” Part of keeping things real meant letting English actress Blunt depict her character as English, and Shelton says there was little question in her mind on the matter. “I didn’t want her to have to worry about that when she was improvising, because improvising was going to be hard enough,” Shelton says. For Blunt, though, there was more to it than just having one less thing to worry about. “I think the character of Iris kind of lent itself more to being a British person just because she’s not very good at talking about emotions and feelings,” Blunt says. “She procrastinates and is self-deprecating and all of those things, so I think it kind of lent itself more to my kind of humor and the way I probably was. I feel like Iris was me eight years ago. It’s weird.”

espite the fact that actor Chris Pine has grown accustomed to taking a beating on film — with roles in “Star Trek” and this year’s “This Means War” — Michelle Pfeiffer wasn’t particularly enthused about joining the party. “Oh, I hated that,” Pfeiffer says of her first scene with Pine in “People Like Us,” in which she slaps him across the face. “I didn’t like having to do that. I didn’t even like watching it. It’s so brutal, really, to slap somebody. I think it’s probably hard for audiences to see that.” In “People Like Us,” Pfeiffer plays Lillian, the mother to Pine’s Sam, who is dealing with the aftershocks of discovering his recently deceased father secretly had another child (Elizabeth Banks). Given the tension in the mother-son relationship onscreen, Pfeiffer’s main concern was conveying some warmth in Lillian. “One of the things [director] Alex [Kurtzman] and I talked about from the beginning was that she just didn’t become one-dimensional and really arch and really cold and icy,” Pfeiffer says. “We wanted to find the humanity of this person who was just really limited and damaged and who had made certain choices in her life that she may regret, that she’s not proud of. What I love about her is that she ultimately owns up and takes responsibility for those choices. I think she’s unapologetic about it.” Another thing she decided to be unapologetic about was Lillian’s look, presenting her natural beauty with a fair dose

L Cool J’s dream came to fruition last week with the release of his new software, Future Sounds My Connect Studio, a Google Docs-meets-Pro Tools software that allows any two artists in the world to create professional-quality tracks together live. The rapper said at the software’s introductory press conference last week that he wanted to use the Internet to break down the walls that had previously made recording music difficult. Traditional studios, he said, cost too much time and money, and digital collaboration was limited to unwieldy back-and-forth e-mails between him and his producer. “I want to connect musicians everywhere so there’s no limitations, there’s no barriers to them connecting with each other,” LL Cool J said. My Connect Studio comes from Boomdizzle, a social media site where musicians can collaborate, rate each other’s music and publish tracks to iTunes, which LL Cool J cofounded in 2008. Sony then integrated My Connect Studio as part of its VAIO E14P laptop. The software also interacts with Facebook and uses Microsoft Cloud hosting. Would the rapper have used My Connect Studio as an upand-coming artist? “There’s no way I would let this opportunity pass me by, you know what I’m saying?” LL

LL Cool J demonstrates live digital music collaboration with his new software, My Connect Studio.

A new album? LL Cool J also coyly revealed that he’s been working on a new album, some of which will be recorded using My Connect Studio. “I’m gonna do a little bit of the album on the ‘Studio’ and make sure that it’s official,” he said with a smile. “As a matter of fact, I started on my album, too. It’s authentic hip-hop. It’s the business.”

Cool J told Metro. “I’d use it for everything it had and try to make the best music I can make, let the chips fall where they may after that.” However, My Connect Studio is not without its limits. Currently, the software is PCexclusive and only available through Sony’s VAIO laptop, although LL Cool J said that a Mac version of the software was in the making, as well as mobile and tablet forms. Only two artists can collaborate in one session at a time, but LL Cool J said that project engi-

neers were working to enable more people to work together live. LL Cool J said that the use of the software would be free in the initial release period, and eventually users would either subscribe or utilize a payas-you-go alternative by the hour. Sony calls the 12-month subscription (with 10 hours of recording per month) included in the bundle a “$75 value” on its website. KILLIAN YOUNG letters@metro.us

Sunburn Sunburn results from an overexposure of skin to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Regularly and frequently apply sunscreen, and wear a hat whenever you will be out in the sun — or

even on an extended car trip. The pain of sunburn can be treated with aspirin or ibuprofen, as well as moisturizers. Avoid sunburns at all costs — they increase your future risk of skin cancer and prematurely age your skin.

ith summer officially under way, here are handy seasonal tips for avoiding and taking care of some common warm weather illnesses, injuries and conditions.

DIGITAL VISION

Bug and tick bites Most insect bites are more annoying than harmful, and the itching can be managed with over-the-counter antihistamines. Don’t scratch, as bites can become infected from breaks in the skin. Following any exposure to a wooded or grassy area, inspect yourself and pets carefully for ticks and tick bites. Lyme disease can result in a red rash that looks like a bull’s-eye, but only in half the cases; any round, blotchy, red rash in the summer should be evaluated. Lyme disease can be cured with antibiotics.

Stay safe during your summer travels.

Swimmer’s ear

Poison ivy

Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear canal. Water becomes trapped in the ear and bacteria overgrow, causing a painful inflammation. Try to get all the water out of your ears after swimming, and consult your physician ASAP if you develop ear pain or a discharge from the ear.

The first step in managing poison ivy is avoiding it, so be familiar with its appearance if you plan outdoor activities. If you or a family member develops an itchy rash after an outing, make sure you wash all skin surfaces, including under the fingernails, as well as all clothing and shoes with soap and water.

Heat illness Heat illness is a spectrum of conditions ranging from mild symptoms from heat exhaustion to heat stroke, in which there is a failure of your body’s ability to regulate temperature, causing damage to your cardiovascular

and central nervous systems. The first three recommendations are to drink, drink and drink (water and/or sports drinks, that is). Avoid alcoholic, carbonated and caffeinated beverages, as these can increase the likelihood of dehydration and interfere with body temperature

Antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream can treat the itch — but if the poison ivy is severe, oral steroids may be needed. — Mark Melrose, DO, is a board-certified emergency physician at Urgent Care Manhattan. regulation. If you start to feel faint, nauseated or have a headache, go indoors to an airconditioned building — or into the shade if AC isn’t available — and drink a cool beverage. The objective is to avoid progressing to heat stroke, which requires hospitalization.

Protect your eyes this summer — and beyond What you can do now to stave off problems later An ophthalmologist’s advice for choosing sunglasses According to the 2012 update of the “Vision Problems in the U.S.” report, a study released this month by Prevent Blindness America and the National Eye Institute, the number of those ages 40 and older with vision impairment and blindness has increased 23 percent since the year 2000. The study, conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins University, provides prevalence rates and estimates cases of age-related eye conditions. “It’s all relative,” says Dr. Robert Noecker of Ophthalmic Consultants in Connecticut. “The increase is also due to the population getting older and to the growing diabetes epidemic. If you live long enough, everyone is going to get cataracts.”

She’s smiling because she knows her eyes are protected behind those sunnies. PHOTODISC

eyelids,” advises Dr. Noecker. “Most damage comes from UV light, and summertime increases the risk. Always wear sunglasses and add a hat, too.” Choosing the right sunglasses is important: “Choose large sunglasses that cover the eyeballs and skin around the eye. If you buy them at the drugstore, choose the ones that have UVA/UVB blocking stickers on them to make sure they have the correct protective coating. The tint of the lens is not so important; that’s usually to do with fashion. Darker glasses are helpful for people who have sensitive eyes. It’s the correct coating that’s important.” LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us

The eyes have it Dr. Noecker teaches us about unsightly common eye ailments. Styes: “They form when the oil glands on the edge of the eyelid clog or become infected. Styes are becoming more common due to the American or Western diet. Eating more saturated fats causes the oil to thicken and not flow.” Dry eyes: “Eyes become drier with age when we produce less tears. But in the summer, eyes can dry out due to wind or dehydration. Also, if the oil glands aren’t working properly, eyes dry because it’s the oil spreading over the eye that keeps tears from evaporating.” Pink eye (conjunctivitis): “This is a viral infection and is more common at certain times of the year, usually winter. It’s extremely contagious because the virus can live on, say, a doorknob for up to five days: That’s how it spreads through families and workplaces so easily. Hygiene is key.”

Re: Economy needs more attention President Obama cannot fix the economy all by himself. Republicans need to wrap that around their heads. Radical conservatism is a bit of an oxymoron, no? Should Mitt Rom-No miraculously win the election, I’d expect to see a new medication hit the market called, “R-Me.” Take two for relief of hidden agendas. Side effects can be loss of life, loss of limb, loss of any or all five senses, PTSD and a worsened economy. Before you take this medication, consult your Bush for directions. DANIEL GREEN, VIA E-MAIL

The person who wrote this letter completely disregards the fact that the Republicans in Congress have shot down every attempt by Obama to

jump-start the economy (Jobs Act). He also states that women should return to their “former duties” so men can fill those jobs. “Former duties”? That’s Republican code for “barefoot and pregnant.” A female republican voter is like a slave who fought for the confederacy. ROBERT LAROSA, VIA E-MAIL

Finally, someone has come up with a plan to rid this country of its economic ills! Getting rid of immigrants would provide jobs for Americans clamoring to pick fruits and vegetables for long hours and little pay. Housekeeping and child care jobs could be eliminated if only women were out of the workforce and back in the home where they belong. Finally, it is apparent that no one has tried hard enough to

encourage the private sector to hire people instead of holding on to money and outsourcing jobs to other countries. Maybe we could try saying “pretty please with sugar on it.” LINDA WHITTAKER, VIA E-MAIL

Women should “return to their former duties”? If he knows how to fix the economy so easily, maybe he should run for president. He surely won’t win with such ludicrous ideas. ROCHELLE ELLIS, VIA E-MAIL

Despite more than 760 days in pretrial confinement, many media outlets have been too silent on Manning’s case, allowing the government’s mistreatment of him to continue in near-secrecy. A reckless, opaque conviction for Pfc. Manning could have dire consequences for future whistleblowers, journalists and activists. Because of this, the media must do its part to engage the American public in a conversation about this trial and our government’s behavior before it’s too late. I ask that you do your part and increase coverage of the Bradley Manning trial, beginning with his hearing on July 16.

Save a life, join Be The Match Registry®

July is African American Bone Marrow Awareness Month

Dana-Farber encourages you to become a donor. When Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts announced her diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome, a disease once known as preleukemia, she shined a spotlight on two important facts: Bone marrow transplants can provide a cure, but only 3 out of every 10 patients can find a match. Every year, more than 35,000 patients are diagnosed with lymphoma, leukemia or other diseases treatable by bone marrow or stem cell transplants. Only 30 percent will find a donor whose tissue type matches their own -- typically within their family. The remaining 70 percent must turn to the unrelated donor registry to find a lifesaving match. “Being a bone marrow or stem cell donor is really a remarkable act of selflessness,” said Robert J. Soiffer, MD, co-chief of the Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplantation Program at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center. “It’s not every day that we get to be heroes.”

Joining the registry is as easy as swabbing the inside of your cheek.

The Be The Match Registry® of the National Marrow Donor Program at Dana- Farber Cancer Institute recruits potential donors throughout New England, helps organize and run donor registration drives and educates donors about the registration and donation process. It’s also unique – the National Donor Program at Dana-Farber not only recruits donors but also expedites patient transplants. The center has facilitated over 200 adult and pediatric patient transplants each year using marrow or stem cells from volunteer registry members.

“It is incredibly rewarding to know that the work we do everyday has the potential of saving a life,” said Cindy Albert, manager of Stem Cell Donor Services at Dana-Farber. “When one of our donors is a match for a patient in need, we get the opportunity to bring that donor through the entire donation process. Knowing there is a patient either here at the Dana-Farber or somewhere in the world anxiously awaiting a second chance at life is truly an inspiring and humbling experience.” Joining the registry is easy and involves completing a registration form and swabbing the inside of your cheek to collect a sample of your cells. You need to be at least 18 years old, able to meet certain health guidelines and willing to donate to any patient in need. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 44 are most urgently needed, since this age group is 10 times more likely to be called as a donor. While news of Robin Roberts’ diagnosis increased awareness of the donor registry, there are still challenges. Because the markers used in matching are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone from their own race or ethnicity. Caucasians who need a transplant have a 70 to 90 percent chance of finding an unrelated donor in the registry. For certain racial and ethnic groups, however, the numbers are much smaller. For example, only 6.5% of donors listed in the registry are African American and just over 5% are Hispanic or Latino.

Every day, thousands of patients with leukemia, sickle cell anemia and other life- threatening diseases hope for a marrow donor who can make their transplant possible. Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their heritage. Yet out of the 10 million members on the Be The Match Registry® of potential donors, only 650,000 are African American. And, since there is greater diversity within this population, African Americans can have a harder time finding a match than those of other ethnic groups. To join the Be The Match Registry® of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) at Dana Farber or to get more information, call 866-875-DFCI (3324) or 617-632-2561 or email nmdpdonor@dfci.harvard.edu.

Dana-Farber and Be The Match Registry® are actively recruiting so that all patients – regardless of their ethnicity – are able to receive the transplant they need. The Dana-Farber program focuses recruitment efforts on drives for Dana-Farber patients actively looking for a match, as well as college outreach and education.

WITH DIABETES, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT If you have diabetes, the choices you make at every meal could mean the difference between good health and serious health problems. Diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar (glucose) in your blood because your body does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to change sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life. To make sure that your body gets the energy it needs to function, you need to know how to be smart about your diet. Food choices have a major impact on your quality of life when you are living with diabetes.

Portion Control and Balanced Food Choices To keep your meals healthy, you need to control

the amount you eat and the types of foods you eat. It doesn’t have to be difficult. Try using the “rule of three” and a 9-inch plate. Fill half the plate with non-starchy vegetables like broccoli or spinach, one quarter of the plate with starchy food like whole grain bread or pasta, and the last quarter of the plate with meat or some other protein. Add an eight-ounce

glass of low-fat milk and a half cup of fruit and you have a very filling, healthy meal. Using the “rule of three” every day along with some moderate exercise will help you to lose weight and keep a healthy weight. Keeping your weight down will also help you control your blood pressure. To feel less hungry and keep your blood sugar level, your body needs to digest food slowly. This will happen when you eat carbohydrates together with fat and protein. Paying attention to your diet will, over time, help maintain the health of blood vessels, and can help you avoid the problems many people with diabetes face when the blood vessels and circulation are damaged - the risk of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, chronic pain, and infections. Live well with diabetes by keeping your body healthy. To work towards good health, exercise moderately, keep your blood pressure under control, take your medications, don’t smoke, and be smart about your diet!

Women’s Health:

The importance of postpartum care. If you are expecting a baby or recently delivered, this article is for you. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, it is important for women to have a check-up with their maternity provider within 4-6 weeks after giving birth. If you delivered by a c-section, you may need to be seen sooner to make sure that the incision is healing properly. However, your body needs more time to heal so you should still have another check-up to make sure that your body has returned to the non-pregnant state. The postpartum check-up is not only for your physical health, it is a good time to talk with your maternity provider about a number of topics. Here are some additional reasons for a postpartum visit:

10 Reasons to have a Check-Up After Delivery 1. To ask your maternity provider about “baby blues” and post partum depression 2. To ask any health related questions and to learn more about your body 3. To find out if you are ready to resume activities (i.e., exercise, sexual intercourse) 4. To discuss birth control options (i.e., the pill, IUD, etc.) or to learn how to avoid pregnancy (Plan B - the “morning after pill”) 5. To discuss how quickly it is safe to become pregnant again 6. To discuss continued breastfeeding or any baby related concerns 7. To receive lab tests if needed or follow-up referrals to other medical providers 8. To discuss preventive health screens you may need 9. To say good bye to your maternity provider and start the transition to your primary care provider 10. To show your maternity provider baby pictures!

What to Expect at Your 4-6 Week Check-Up Your provider will: • • • • •

Astigmatism Correction Now Available Am I a candidate? If you have been considering vision correction and were discouraged because you were told you have astigmatism and your correction was not treatable with LASIK, New England Eye Center has fantastic news for you. Not only can we treat Astigmatism with the

iLASIK™ procedure, the cornea trained physicians at New England Eye Center now offer the most advanced procedures available to treat a variety of vision correction disorders. What is astigmatism? Astigmatism is a condition where vision is blurred by

asymmetric steepening of the cornea or crystalline lens. Patients with astigmatism may not only notice blurring of vision at both distance and near, but can also note shadowing or ghosting of images as well. These vision symptoms are caused when light entering the eye is refracted or bent to

multiple points in the eye, resulting in an out of focus image. Astigmatism is very common, and occurs in about 1 in 3 people. Astigmatism can be easily corrected by contact lenses or eyeglasses. However, if glasses or contacts are troublesome, or not tolerated, there is another option. New

iLASIK for Astigmatism

At New England Eye Center, our world-class surgeons specialize in the treatment of all types of Astigmatism. That’s great news for everyone who wears glasses or contacts and thought they were not a candidate for LASIK. England Eye Center offers many alternatives to glasses and contacts for the correction of all types of refractive error, including astigmatism. Custom LASIK and PRK are available not only for near and far sightedness, but for the correction of astigmatism as well. For cataract patients, astigmatism can be either treated with incisions made during cataract surgery, or with implantation of advanced lens technology. Why should I have my Astigmatism treated with a surgical alternative to contacts and glasses? If left uncorrected Astigmatism can cause eye strain, headaches and difficulties in everyday tasks from reading to working to outdoor activities. While glasses and many contact lenses are on the market to effectively correct astigmatism, if you are uncomfortable in either, it is important for you to know you have options. While glasses are your safest alternative, many people either are not able to tolerate their entire astigmatism correction in eyeglasses, or do not achieve the clear vision they desire or need for everyday living. Contact lenses, worn and cared for properly are a wonderful alternative to glasses. However, contact lenses are not without risks, and are not well tolerated by everyone. Many people are contact lens intolerant, whether due to underlying dry eye, reaction to contact lens solutions, or corneal inflammation or infections due to contact lens wear. For these patients, contact lenses are no longer an

option and eyeglasses do not allow for functioning at the highest level. What other procedures are available to me to correct my vision? The physicians at New England Eye Center routinely perform LASIK and PRK, however there are lens procedures for patients which can also provide freedom from contacts and glasses. The Visian implantable collamer lens, which has the added benefit of being removable, can treat a wide variety of patients who are nearsighted and it is also a wonderful alternative for patients with dry eye issues or people who do not qualify for LASIK. For patients who have added reading glasses to their vision correction needs, many options are available, including monovision and conductive keratoplasty. For patients with a cataract, intraocular lenses are available that offer improved freedom from glasses at distance, intermediate, and near vision. These include the Crystalens accommodating lens, as well as the Restor and Tecnis multifocal lenses. For our cataract patients with astigmatism, Toric intraocular lenses can be implanted to neutralize their astigmatism. When you are ready to call us, New England Eye Center will be honored to be your vision care provider. 24. Festus Ezeli (Vanderbilt, center) It’s easy to make fun (I do my share) of Vanderbilt since they almost always get bounced in the first round of the NCAA tournament, but Ezeli could be a hidden gem.

17. Kendall Marshall (North Carolina, point guard) His injury might have cost the Tar Heels a shot at a title in April. An excellent passer, he could be a perfect backup point guard behind Rajon Rondo.

26. Will Barton (Memphis, swingman) The Tigers dropped off big time since John Calipari and Derrick Rose left but believe me when I tell you that Barton can play. He could potentially be a steal late in the first round although he might be a reach where the Celts pick. If Boston picks him, the first stop should be the North End to put some weight on his skinny frame.

19. Andrew Nicholson (St. Bonaventure, center/power forward) Good size and post moves, he led the Bonnies to their first NCAA tournament berth in 12 years. The senior is experienced and mature, two assets for the C’s would like for another run.

22. Jared Sullinger (Ohio State, power forward) He wasn’t invited to the draft, showing how far his stock has

Vanderbilt’s Festus Ezeli is a stud on the defensive end.

CELTICS FANS HAVE RIGHT TO BE ANGRY It actually stunned me yesterday when the 98.5 and WEEI phone lines weren’t jammed with NBA conspiracy calls. mean if there ever was a time to complain about the operations of Team Stern, yesterday was it for Celtics fans. If you haven’t heard, the Celtics were awarded Oklahoma City’s second-round draft pick (via Charlotte) in the 2013 NBA Draft because it appears the Thunder were not truthful about the health of Jeff Green around the time of the controversial February 2011 trade Quoted of Kendrick Perkins. In other words, The NBA has THIS IS A BIG DEAL. The NBA has deemed the deemed GM Sam Presti and the Thun- Thunder guilty der guilty of either of either having something to having hide about Green’s heart condition or something to not doing their due hide about diligence. Celtics doctors Green or not were the ones who doing their due found Green to have diligence. an aortic aneurysm just prior to the start of the 2011-12 season and Green ended up missing the entire year. Had Green played this past season, there is little doubt he would have made at least some sort positive contribution to a team that was

(Kentucky, point guard) The freshman led the Wildcats to the NCAA title in his only collegiate season but he looks like Brandon Knight (Pistons) 2.0: A point guard that should have stayed in college another year to develop some more.

21. Perry Jones (Baylor, forward) Much like Terrence (not related), he has all the skills but if you watched Baylor in any important game this season, particularly the NCAA tournament, he was mostly invisible.

25. Fab Melo (Syracuse, center) I don’t think the 2012 Webster’s Dictionaries have been published yet but if they have, I’m pretty sure there is a picture of Melo’s goofy face under the word “bust.” He is a potential game-changer defensively but lazy habits on and off the court probably doom any impact he will have in the NBA unless he grows up in a hurry. just minutes away from reaching the Finals. The Celtics certainly could have used him to guard LeBron James for a couple of minutes in Game 6. In fact, here’s saying that Green’s scoring ability would have been just enough to propel the Celtics over the Heat.

I

n 2010-11, the Celtics were the best team in the NBA prior to the Perkins-Green swap. That’s well documented. But if Oklahoma City doctors had discovered even the slightest thing wrong with Green, don’t you think Danny Ainge would have hesitated on pulling the trigger? I’m not the world’s biggest ‘Perk’ supporter (he averaged a dreadful 4.8 ppg and 6.8 rebounds in the Finals against the Heat), but I do realize that the Celtics season would not have spiraled out of control last year like it did if it had not been for the controversial trade. Yup, the biggest Celtics honks should be crying today that Presti and OKC cost the Celtics TWO championship titles. And while that statement may be a little excessive, this topic is still more than worthy of detailed exploration. Just a second round pick for something that altered the course of two contending seasons? Get mad Celtics fans. Today you have all the right.

Houston makes a play for Dwight Howard Big-time moves expected across league in next couple of days, weeks Rockets accumulating picks to get in on new ‘Superman’ sweepstakes GETTY IMAGES

The Rockets and Timberwolves made a trade yesterday. And it was terrible news for the Brooklyn Nets. Houston traded Chase Budinger to Minnesota for the No. 18 pick in tomorrow’s NBA draft, giving the Rockets picks No. 14, No. 16 and No. 18 in the draft. They acquired No. 14 from the Knicks back in 2010 for the Tracy McGrady deal. It’s bad news for the Nets because the move was clearly done with the intention of trading for Magic center Dwight Howard. Reports are that Houston feels it can package the three picks — or possibly move up for a higher one

— to get Howard for at least the last year of his contract. ESPN reports they may also try to move Kyle Lowry to acquire a top 10 pick. The Nets are still hoping Howard, who has said he would like to play in Brooklyn, will be available in a trade. At the moment, however, they have few pieces to pull off a trade and must first convince Deron Williams to re-sign. Dwight Howard could soon be dancing in Houston.

IS YOUR CONDO UNDERINSURED? By Attorney George Warshaw ven condos suffer fires. Lenders are now requiring “walls in” coverage for condos, but what does that mean?

E

Every condominium has a master fire and casualty insurance policy covering the bricks, mortar and common areas – but does the master policy cover the walls and cabinets inside each unit as well? Maybe. There are three types of master condo policies: “all-in” (or all-inclusive), “single entity,” and “bare walls.” “Take the apartment, turn it upside down and shake it,” one insurance agent told me. “If it doesn’t fall then it’s covered by the ‘all-in’ policy. This policy also covers any improvements made to the unit – new cabinets or renovations. The “single entity” master policy is the same as the “all-in” except that it doesn’t cover any improvements made since the condo was created. “Bare walls” covers common areas only – and not any interior walls or the fixtures inside a unit. Make sure your condominium documents require the right coverage – and that your agent is providing you with that coverage. One last word on insurance. It’s sometimes worthwhile to get your personal unit owner’s policy from the same insurance carrier or agent that handles the building. You may be able to avoid finger-pointing by two different insurance companies in the event of a claim. © 2012 George Warshaw.

hen it comes to outdoor cooking, most people settle for a grill and call it a day. But Vojin Vujosevic and his wife Diana added much more than the typical charcoal or gas grill to the backyard of their Cape Cod home. They have both of those and more, including the kitchen sink. “We’ve always loved to entertain, we’ve always had homes with outdoor entertaining space,” says Mr. Vujosevic, who is a co-founder of the successful Cape-based artisan bakery Pain D’Avignon. “Now we have kids, we do it for ourselves more. We don’t eat indoors much in the summer.” The idea is to maximize their time outdoors and not be cut off from friends and family while doing food prep. There’s no running back and forth to the kitchen, either, and less mess. “It’s much easier when you rinse off and prepare all the vegetables and fish out there. People can mingle with you while you cook. There’s a view of the water. It provides a space where everyone can be together.” Besides a fabulous outdoor kitchen, there’s also a dining

Kickin’ kitchen The kitchen garden was a traditional addition for those with enough space. It provided herbs, vegetables and fruits for the home. A garden kitchen turns that around and facilitates cooking beyond throwing a burger on the grill. But whether a kitchen is inside the house or out, one thing is key, says Mr. Vujosevic: “Like any indoor kitchen, having well-organized counter space outside makes cooking a lot easier.”

and living area with a table and comfy seating. A pergola covers much of the patio space, providing shelter from summer sun and the occasional shower. The yard includes a play area too, where croquet or volleyball matches provide activity. “We have a fireplace and light fires if it’s chilly,” he says. “In late spring right through to fall, which is nicer here than anywhere, we try to enjoy every minute we can, being outside.” LINDA LABAN

New home sales race to two-year high in May New single-family home sales surged in May to a two-year high and prices rose from a year ago, further signs the housing market recovery was gaining some mo-

mentum. The Commerce Department said on Monday sales jumped 7.6 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted 369,000-unit annual rate, the highest since April 2010. That was well above economists’ expectations for a 346,000 pace and the highest since April 2010, when sales were inflated by a homebuyer tax credit. The report was the latest evidence of a broadening recovery

in the housing market even as the economy is weakening. The sector had long been the Achilles heel of the economy's recovery from the 2007-09 recession. Reports last week showed a jump in home building permits and a fourth straight month of gains in the median price of previously owned homes. Underscoring the firming tone, new home sales in May were up 19.8 percent from their year-ago lev-

el. Still, they stand at only a quarter of the peak reached in July 2005 and the sector remains constrained by an oversupply of previously owned homes. Residential construction is expected to contribute to gross domestic product for the first time since 2005. But there are fears that foreclosures could erode demand for new houses. New home sales account for only 7.5 percent of the overall market. REUTERS
