“I liked the tokens, but a Charlie Card is much more convenient.”

It’s been five years since strap hangers had to fish around in their pockets for tokens to board the T, and while tokens haven’t been accepted at fare gates since then, customers have been able to transfer the $1.25 value of a token to a Charlie Card at fare vending machines. Riders should start digging through their drawers, because that is about to change. Customers have until Saturday to turn in their tokens at the majority of vending machines, although they will be able to redeem them at a few select locations until July 20. “I have no problem with them not accepting them because it’s been more than five years since they were sold,” said T rider Ron Newman. “It

would’ve been fine with me if they had stopped accepting them two or three years ago, but I don’t think that they did this in a very good way; they didn’t publicize it.” Newman has hung onto three tokens with the intention of keeping one as a souvenir and feeding the other two to a vending machine, but like many riders this week, Newman said he was disappointed when they were rejected from all the machines at Davis Square. T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said that in order to have the hundreds of vending machines ready for the new fare structure on Sunday, technicians have already started making modifications to many of the machines, so some of them no longer accept tokens. “You may still bring your tokens to the windows at the customer service center at Downtown Crossing through July 20. Also through July 20, we will continue to accept tokens via fare vending machines at the following locations: Downtown Crossing, Harvard Square, Riverside, Ruggles, Quincy Center, and Government Center Stations,” Pesaturo said. For sentimental riders, other options are to hang onto them as a way to remember a simpler — and cheaper — time, sell them, or get crafty. With word spreading that the tokens will no longer be

Carson Beach in Southie gets four stars for water SOUTH BOSTON. Carson Beach

in South Boston received a favorable rating in a new analysis on beach water quality. The Natural Resources Defense Council gave Carson Beach four out of five stars. The report, released yesterday, said the beach had less than 5 percent of its water samples exceeding national limits in 2011, that officials

post advisories online and that water quality is monitored more than once a week. Massachusetts placed 12th in beach water quality out of 30 states reviewed in the report. One help has been the institution of a no-discharge zone established around Cape Cod last year. METRO

Some in BU hazing case admit guilt Two Boston University students involved in a hazing incident earlier this year in the basement of an Allston home admitted responsibility during a hearing yesterday. Robert Rappa and Jonathan Katz, both 22 and of Brookline, admitted to their charges during a hearing in Brighton District Court, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office. Rappa was charged with hazing and failure to report hazing. He was ordered to pay $400 and to complete 40 hours of community service. He directed the pledges to the Ashford Street home. Katz, who was able to prove he was not at the house when the hazing occurred, was ordered to pay $200 in court costs for failure to report hazing. Jesse Kay, 20, of Allston, was also arraigned yesterday. He pleaded not guilty to hazing, failure to report hazing and five counts of assault and battery. He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court Aug. 20. Spencer Davidson, 21, of Allston, also pleaded not guilty to the same charges during a hearing last week and is due back in court at a later date.

Kyle Shevrin, 21, of Brookline was scheduled to be arraigned yesterday, but did not appear in court. He did notify officials that he was out of state, but a judge issued a default warrant for him. The judge did put the warrant on hold until Aug. 20, Shevrin’s new arraignment date. Michael Sanieoff, 22, who lived at the Allston home, previously pleaded not guilty to keeping a disorderly house and is due back in court next week.

Forget space camp. A group of high school students are spending part of their summer at Harvard Medical School learning basic medical practices and training on simulators used by medical interns. The camp, in its sixth year, is part of the MEDscience summer program and semester high school curriculum. During the weeklong camp, the teens are taught how to check vital signs, take a patient’s medical history and what different medical tests mean. A simulation is also part of the experience, in which the teens are given a patient dummy and one of their instructors provides the patient’s voice through a speaker system. Yesterday, Mayor Thomas Menino served as the “patient’s” husband as he observed the students ask about her medical history, placed an oxygen mask on the dummy and reviewed test images. The program also offers semester courses in high schools in Boston and other nearby cities. “You could teach blood flow on a chalk board, but they come down here and can see a patient [dummy] having a heart attack and it’s closer to real life,” said Julie Joyal, the program’s lead teacher. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II shakes hands with Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, left, watched by First Minister Peter Robinson at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, Northern Ireland, yesterday.

Liquors Britain’s Queen Elizabeth shook the hand of former IRA guerrilla commander Martin McGuinness for the first time yesterday, drawing a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, including that of her cousin. The meeting with McGuinness, who is now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, comes 14 years after the Irish Republican Army ended its war against British rule in the province, and is one of the last big milestones in a peace process whose success has been studied around the world. The queen met McGuinness, Northern Ireland’s Unionist first minister Peter Robinson and Irish President Michael D.Higgins for fewer than 10 minutes behind closed doors in a theater in a leafy suburb of Belfast cordoned off by hundreds of police. McGuinness shook the gloved hand of the queen a second time as she left the theater, this time in front of television cameras — but unlike other guests, he chose not to bow his head.

“Today is a huge event and it is, in a sense, the ultimate handshake. JOHN REID, BRITISH SECRETARY OF STATE FOR NORTHERN IRELAND FROM 2001 TO 2002, TOLD THE BBC

The queen’s bright green outfit appeared to have been chosen with Ireland’s national color in mind, and McGuinness wished a smiling monarch well in Irish, saying “slan agus beannacht, which he told her means “goodbye and Godspeed. There has been scattered opposition to the gesture of reconciliation from dissident Irish militants and from some of the IRA’s victims. But the vast majority of the province’s politicians backed the meeting, the first between the queen and a top member of the IRA or its former political wing, Sinn Fein. “Today is a huge event and it is, in a sense, the ultimate handshake, John Reid, British secretary of state for Northern Ireland from 2001 to 2002, told the BBC. “Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act,” named after a Russian anticorruption lawyer whose death in 2009 while in pretrial detention drew widespread condemnation. Analysts expect Facebook’s user base to help it corner a substantial share of the Internet advertising market.

The financial houses behind Silicon Valley’s largest-ever coming-out party kicked off formal coverage of the company yesterday by warning about an uncertain business model, margin pressures and a difficult transition to mobile technology. The reports, released by banks involved in the IPO after a 40-day quiet period expired, represent Wall Street’s broadest assessment of the first U.S. company to debut with a market value of more than $100 billion. Morgan Stanley and other major brokerages that handled the blockbuster IPO said it remained unclear how Facebook plans to make money from a growing number of users logging on to the No. 1 social network via smartphones and

tablets. That helped send its shares down 3 percent. Of the 17 brokerages that handled the blockbuster IPO and kicked off coverage of the social networking company yesterday, eight recommended against buying into the shares. Two of Facebook’s three lead underwriters — Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan — were most bullish, targeting Facebook shares at $45 and $42, respectively. Morgan Stanley, which has come under scrutiny for its role in driving a $38 IPO price that now appears lofty to some, stuck to a price target that matched its debut level and “overweight” recommendation. The average of target prices cited on Wednesday was $37.64 — a tad below Facebook’s stock market debut price. REUTERS

How lofty? Banks are required to keep their employees handling IPOs apart from analysts recommending stocks in order to avoid conflicts of interest. In the IPO, banks sold their clients shares of eight-yearold Facebook, started by Mark Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room, at a price equivalent to a whopping 100 times 2011 net income per share. Most analysts expect Facebook’s large user base to help it corner a substantial share of the Internet advertising market in the long term. The ratings released yesterday were “hold” and its equivalent or lower.

Chicago may decriminalize carrying small amounts of pot 15

News in brief BRENDAN HOFFMAN/GETTY IMAGES

DAVID MCNEW/GETTY IMAGES

The Chicago City Council yesterday voted to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, the latest U.S. city to support diminished penalties for the drug’s use. Under the proposal, police officers in the nation’s thirdlargest city would be able to issue a written violation for possession of 15 grams or less rather than make an arrest. Supporters of the ordinance, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, said the measure would help raise revenue for the city, save money and free up police to pursue more serious crimes. More than a dozen states and several large U.S. cities have already taken similar steps. Chicago Police Department statistics indicate that last year there were 18,298 arrests for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana, according

to a statement from the mayor's office. Each case involves approximately four officers — two arresting and two transporting officers — and places an additional burden on the Cook County court and jail system, the statement said. The issue of freeing up police officers for more serious crimes is particularly pressing this year in Chicago, which has seen a 37 percent spike in its murder rate. Other cities with similar policies include Seattle, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. REUTERS

2 The feed ... Checking in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer. Today, John Stamos is a Beach Boy, Leonard Nimoy is feeling poetic, Chris Colfer is getting some odd notions and Sarah Silverman is not getting enough sleep. @JohnStamos: once again, al jardine can’t keep his hands off my bongos. @TheRealNimoy: Out of the night that covers me black as a pit from pole to pole I thank whatever Gods may be for my unconquerable soul. @chriscolfer: Anyone else randomly have really political thoughts while cleaning their kitchen counters? @SarahKSilverman: A drunken screaming fight outside my apt door is a delight to wake up to 2 hours before my alarm

Nora Ephron, remembered

ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

After a long and successful career as a writer and director, Nora Ephron died Tuesday of complications from acute myeloid leukemia. Not surprisingly, the woman behind classics such as “When Harry Met Sally” and “Sleepless in Seattle” is being remembered fondly by her colleagues in Hollywood:

STEVE MARTIN

“I am very sad to learn of Nora’s passing. She was a brilliant writer and humorist. Being her Harry to Meg’s Sally will always have a special place in my heart. I was very lucky to get to say her words.” BILLY CRYSTAL

JIMMY KIMMEL

“In a world where we’re told that you can’t have it all, Nora consistently proved that adage wrong. A writer, director, wife, mother,

Ephron died Tuesday at the age of 71.

chef, wit — there didn’t seem to be anything she couldn’t do. And not just do it, but excel at it, revolutionize it.” CARRIE FISHER

“At a dinner table and on a film

set, she lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with love for us and love for life. Rita and I are so very sad to lose our friend who brought so much joy to all who were lucky enough to know her.”

Reports that Charlie Sheen expertly, enthusiastically dismantled another Ritz-Carlton hotel room don’t seem to be holding up. While UsMagazine.com claims that the actor trashed his suite during a weekend-long party in New York with ex-wife Denise Richards — which he actually famously did do in

2011 — his reps and hotel employees are denying he was anything but a well-behaved guest. TMZ obtained a copy of the itemized bill — why yes, we did feel creepy reading it — and Sheen’s version might hold up: Your mom could do more damage to the mini-bar, and we’re pretty sure dry-cleaning isn’t a concern when there are cokedusted porn stars to attend to.

Depp split getting messy Johnny Depp recently bought Amber Heard a horse, but he may have been spending some extracurricular time with his former “Rum Diary” co-star before leaving longtime partner Vanessa Paradis. “He’s smitten

by her. They started sleeping together during the press tour,” a source tells Us Weekly. As for Paradis, she wasn’t amused — a source heard her scream, “If I see her, I’ll drown her!” Noted, Vanessa. And with that, we are officially done talking about your split. No hard feelings?

TOM HANKS

tells Hollyscoop. “I think there are other people out there that are truly talented that have something to say, and their visions need to be realized and they need to be treated fairly.”

Katy Perry making label plans Katy Perry recently let slip her plans to start her own record label, though the announcement might have been a tad early. “I haven’t finished it all up, so it’s a bit premature, but really I would like to give the opportunity to other people who are frustrated, like what I went through,” Perry

Congratulations are in order for Paula Deen, who appears on the cover of the new People magazine 30 pounds thinner. “It took me a couple of years to get to this point. If you make a few small changes, they can add up to big results,” says the chef, who has type 2 diabetes. Paula, it is better to have loved and lost your buttercake than to have never licked it off the counter at all. Well done.

“She was the one you wanted to read, to listen to, to be in the company of. Nora Ephron: Incomparable wit; delightful friend. Sadness reigns.”

Scarlett Johansson could be compensated more than $66,000 for having nude photos leaked in 2011, according to the Los Angeles Times. Federal prosecutors suggest in a sentencing memo that Christopher Cheney, who

pleaded guilty to nine counts of hacking, compensate some of his high-profile targets, including Johansson. They also suggest $7,500 for Christina Aguilera and $76,767.35 for “Secret Life of the American Teenager” star Renee Olstead. In addition, prosecutors are suggesting a 71month prison sentence for Cheney.

John Travolta puts on a show John Travolta made his first public appearance since being hit

with sexual misconduct lawsuits from various service industry men, and it appears he decided actions would speak louder than words. Travolta hit the red carpet for the premiere of his latest film, Oliver Stone’s “Savages,” and instead of stopping to give any interviews, he and wife Kelly Preston put on an impressive show of public displays of affection, groping and kissing each other all the way down the carpet, according to Hollyscoop. The appearance came just hours after a male cruise ship employee filed a federal suit against Travolta.

orn on July 14, 1912, in Oklahoma, Woody Guthrie’s centennial returns the folk icon’s spirit to the spotlight as dozens of concerts, festivals and tributes play out through the summer all over the world. Not surprisingly, Woody’s son, Arlo, his grandchildren and great grandchildren have their own traveling Guthrie Family Reunion tour. “We’ve only done this once before, and that was years ago,” says Woody’s granddaughter Sarah Lee from her home in the Berkshires, where she grew up. “Seventeen of us on one bus, and my mom and dad on another. It was one big happy family. ...

says Sarah Lee. “You can compare a lot of the old Woody Guthrie songs and they apply to what’s going on today. Songs like ‘Pastures of Plenty’ and ‘I Ain’t Got No Home’ — a lot of those old songs are more important in our lives than they’ve ever been.”

About face

PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES

One dating website matches people according to the shapes of their mugs Why it’s a time-tested method It’s not quite so strange when you really think about it: How many times have you looked at a couple and remarked that they could be brother and sister? Those strange similarities a couple can share are no coincidence. Genetically, we have been trained to seek out those who have a face similar to our own, says founder of FindYourFacemate.com, Christina Bloom. “There’s part of the brain that’s just focused on processing faces. It’s the fusiform gyri. It’s so important that we have a special area in our brain for it, Bloom says. “If you think about human beings before we had language, or if you think about the way babies are — we learn things visually. That makes sense be-

cause that’s how we mated. We just know what we like. Bloom points to several examples of couples who have similar faces — Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez, and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, for instance. She believes that matching people by their face shapes will ultimately lead to better chemistry and, hopefully, better coupling. “After meeting [a date], you think of, ‘Wow, it’s because of his or her great personality, that’s why I like them.’ Well no, she says. “You already saw his or her face, and you were interested because of his or her face. Bloom says that the criteria for a good match comes in this descending order: chemistry, style, values and person-

ality. That’s why her website puts looks first and foremost. After uploading a photo, the site’s algorithm analyzes 11 points on the face and matches it with others who share those traits. In the next three months, Bloom hopes to improve the algorithm by using 62 points on the face for more specialized matches. To Bloom, the website is just helping us do what we already intuitively know how to do. “I’ve been looking at couples for 20-plus years, and I just think it’s innate, she says. “Basically, we’re doing it without even knowing that we’re doing it. I do not know how people don’t see it. HEIDI PATALANO

Suffer a little now, benefit later RE: “ECONOMY NEEDS MORE ATTENTION”: During the housing

bubble interest rates were pushed, and kept, too low for too long. This directed labor and resources into the housing market whether it was construction, house flipping, realtors, etc. When the artificial boom turned bust the economy attempted to correct itself by reallocating the misdirected resources from the bubble but our omnipotent benefactors in Washington and the Federal Reserve halted that process by bailing out banks and creating a stimulus bill. What we need is to allow interest rates to return to market levels. Yes, this would mean that we would fall into tougher economic times, for the moment, but we would come

out of this mess with a more stable economy. No amount of stimulus can dig us out of recession; it will only sow the seeds for the next bubble to burst. KELLY DONNOE, VIA E-MAIL

Obama will want grandma’s flowers RE: “PRESIDENT WANTS YOUR WEDDING GIFTS:” I was

surprised to read your paper this morning to note that Obama is trying to collect as much money as he can. This is a new trick and is looking for a cash birthday present. He can go for marriage anniversary cash present, silver anniversary cash present, golden anniversary cash present. Oh I forgot, why not go for funeral cash present also? Why do these people look for so much money to fight

for elections? Can anybody inform the general public so we can know what they do with so much money?

DEVDUTT DAVE, VIA E-MAIL

Do they really know what they’re asking?

The Fast and Furious gun running investigation may have been a failure, but there is a curious irony in the related contempt of Congress vote against Attorney General Eric Holder by the Republican-led Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The chair of that committee, Darrell Issa, has a criminal history of his own. In 1971 he was accused of stealing and abandoning a fellow soldier’s car and later, in 1972 he was charged with stealing a Maserati. The case was later dismissed. Also in 1972, police found him in possession of a concealed weapon. He pleaded to a lesser charge. The high mindedness of this Republican legislator seems somewhat diminished by his shady past.

Anticipating the round of cheers at the possible Supreme Court ruling that key elements of Obamacare (if not the entire law itself) are unconstitutional, consider what such a ruling will mean: private insurance companies can go back to denying coverage to anyone they dislike, raise premiums whenever they want, cut services as they wish, refuse to cover whatever their accountants can dispute, and continue to commit fraud with impunity. t’s the Fourth; it’s food, friends and family — and fireworks. When it comes to a room with a view of Boston’s famous fireworks — and just about everything else in the city — then 52 floors up the Prudential Tower at the Top of the Hub is the place to be. What four walls of picture windows framing the city, it’s easy to miss this Back Bay icon’s understated, elegant interior — a retro classic concoction. It’s a big fishbowl in the sky; and every Fourth, Top of the Hub throws a party with a cocktail reception, five-course dinner, a live simulcast of the Boston Pops Hatch Shell concert and, weather permitting, spectacular views of the fireworks over the Charles River.

It includes lobster salad with mango, beets and hints of tarragon, plus scallops with grilled watermelon and spicy Habanero. Yes, “Call Me Maybe” is definitely the song of the summer, and be sure to pick up Metro tomorrow for our interview with Carly Rae Jepsen. But if you’re yearning for summers past, then you will dig the playlist that you find this week at www.metro.us/ songza and www.songza.com /listen/a-bad-asssummer-in-1990sMetro-2. It’s a playlist full of edgier summer hits from 1990 through 1999. Live Performance?

‘Uhh Yeah Dude’ S

Comedy podcast comes to the East Coast after more than 300 episodes Co-founder Seth Romatelli is returning home for his first time in four years Will he find what he lost at The Paradise?

eth Romatelli claims to have only ever lost three things in his life: A Red Sox hat at the 1994 Lollapalooza, an umbrella at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood at the opening of “The Perfect Storm,” and a cassette of a live Guns n’ Roses show at the Paradise Rock Club in October of 1987. This July, Romatelli, a native of Haverhill, will return to The Paradise, but he’s not necessarily looking for that Gn’R tape. He and his podcast co-host Jonathan Larroquette — son of John Larroquette of the 1980s show “Night Court” — will be back in Boston next week to do their own live performance of their podcast, “Uhh Yeah Dude.” Described as “a weekly roundup of America through the eyes of two AmericanAmericans,” “Uhh Yeah Dude” began in 2006 when the pair teamed up at the early stages of podcast popularity. “We used to have telephone conversations where we’d crack each other up if we hadn’t seen each other in a while,” says Romatelli of Larroquette. “He

movie?’ and ‘why are they raising prices at Starbucks?’” The “Uhh Yeah” dudes and their fans have taken six-and-ahalf years worth of episodes and categorized them by topic on uhhyeahdude.com, where archives are continually updated. If he’s ever wondering “what was going on in America the second week in February in 2008?” Romatelli says, he can go back to the show and see what they discussed. The July show will be their seventh live one since the podcast’s debut. They plan on keeping the conversational format of the podcasts. With their L.A. shows, the two simply brought furniture from Romatelli’s living room and set it on the stage. At the end of each episode, the pair bump fists and say “seatbelts.” “I don’t even know what episode we started,” he says. “It doesn’t even mean anything, just something I’d say to people as a weird thing to say.” So, seatbelts! This New Jersey band’s twohour 2006 opus “The Mother, the Mechanic, and the Path” had a narrative and stylistic scope unheard of even in the overwrought world of early ’00s emo. They gave their fans six years to digest it before this summer’s follow-up, “In Currents,” a collection of 12 songs which should be considerably more manageable.

Uhh Yeah Dude has done live shows in L.A., Seattle and Brooklyn. When they were offered a show in New York City, Seth Romatelli asked to move it to Boston. “I haven’t been back to Massachusetts in four years and I want to see mom and dad,” he says. Romatelli, a graduate of Emerson College, moved to L.A. in the months after his graduation in 1995. When he speaks of coming home, he uses a variety of synonyms for mental illness: “To get to go back and get to do a show in Boston is crazy. Just to be back in Massachusetts is nuts. Just to be back in my hometown would be crazy. To be doing a show there with my homie would be insane!”

Van Der Graff Generator’s brainy, high-concept work set them apart even in the brainy, high-concept world of early ’70s prog-rock. thought if we gave this a structure … we could kind of capture that same thing but in the format of a radio show.” Romatelli claims not to own a cell phone or have an e-mail account, so how does such a self-professed Luddite actively do a podcast each week? He says when it comes to technology, Larroquette does all of the heavy lifting. “He came to my house and said, ‘I’m gonna put a laptop on your coffee table in the middle of your living room, and I’m gonna plug in a microphone on both ends. I’m gonna sit in a chair, and you’re gonna stand across from me to talk for an hour,’” remembers Romatelli. Romatelli says very little is planned in advance with “Uhh Yeah Dude.” “It’s a hodgepodge in the way that we might talk about a commercial that we saw, but then we might talk about a new food product, but then we might talk about a crazy news story,” he says. “We’re going to try to make sense and process all of the information … like ‘How is “Rock of Ages” a

New Aloe “Cocktail” Solves Digestion Nightmares for Millions Doctors report new aloe-vera “cocktail” delivers instant relief to people who suffer with heartburn, acid-indigestion, constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and other stomach nightmares... By Damian Wexler, Freelance health reporter

“Sometimes you’ll give anything just to make it stop!”... says Dr. Santiago Rodriguez about digestive distress. He ought to know. After all, he’s a world-renowned expert on medicinal botany. “You can see the tortured look on people’s faces as they talk about the scorching burn of stomach acid. Or being so constipated you almost pass out from the pain.” And there’s nothing worse than being “kept prisoner to your bathroom” because of chronic diarrhea. It’s a nightmare for people who suffer from it. But now, your stomach problems could be over. And the secret is in the healing aloe plant. FINALLY THERE’S HOPE.. At first, the thought of drinking Aloe vera might make some people back away. But in fact, this delicious “digestion cocktail” is doing amazing things for people who suffer with stomach problems --- even if they’ve had them for years. Here’s how it works…

Is it Worth the Risk? FDA WARNING! Using proton pump inhibitors (like Nexium® and Prilosec®) on a long-term basis, increases your risk of hip, bone and spinal fractures. STOMACH AGONY Your stomach naturally produces acid so strong, it can dissolve an aluminum spoon in just 30 minutes! And when excess acid escapes into your esophagus, throat and stomach lining… It unleashes the scorching pain of acid reflux, heartburn, ulcers and more misery. Add the problems of stress, and “all hell breaks loose.” Dr. Rodriguez explains... the “AloeCure® can work genuine miracles. It buffers high acid levels with amazing speed. So your stomach feels completely at ease just moments after drinking it.” In fact, it could wipe out stomach pain, discomfort, and frantic runs to the bathroom. UNTIL NOW, LITTLE COULD BE DONE... But “AloeCure® can help virtually anyone. Even people with chronic stomach pain can feel better right away,” says Dr. Rodriguez. And what’s really exciting is AloeCure® aids in keeping your digestive tract healthy, so intestinal distress stops coming back. DIGESTION DEFENDER #1: BALANCES STOMACH ACID Your first line of defense is calcium malate. This natural acid buffer instantly sends stomach acid levels plunging. And holds acid levels down so they don’t return! DIGESTION DEFENDER #2: INSTANT, SOOTHING RELIEF AloeCure® is brimming with polysaccharides, this “wonder” compound that gently coats the throat, esophagus and stomach, carrying instant relief to cells scorched by excess acid.

‘People Like Us’ Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the phenomenal pair of writers responsible for the screenplay of “Star Trek” and the TV show “Fringe,” team up again for this movie about a salesman who discovers his long-lost sister. ‘Magic Mike’ Sex sells and so does Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike,” a movie inspired by the actor’s life as an exotic dancer prior to the film business. In this Steven Soderbergh film, he’s an expert stripper who takes a young man under his wing as his protege (Alex Pettyfer) — while simultaneously aspiring to become a small businessman.

We’ve all imagined that our favorite stuffed animal, action figure, or doll was real — for John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), though, it’s his daily reality. Writer, director and “Family Guy” creator Seth McFarlane voices Ted, a rude, crude teddy bear who refuses to leave John’s side. Ever.

West Bridge puts a cocktail-savvy spin on all of the new bars in Kendall Square

he opening of a number of promising new barcentric bars around the city has given way to a regression of sorts in recent months, trending toward more style over substance. That’s why the opening of West Bridge in Kendall Square is so heartening for the cocktail and spirits-focused drinker. You won’t be surprised to hear that the bar program at the inventive French restaurant is helmed by longtime Eastern Standard vet Josh Taylor, who has concocted an impressively assertive cocktail lineup. He focuses on rhum agricole (made from cane juice, not molasses), mezcal, brandy and sherry bases. One example, the deeply contemplative Wheelwright, is made with fino (the driest variety of sherry), Wray and Nephew overproof rum, Dolin Blanc vermouth, Galliano and orange water. It changes from one sip to the next, from deep,

bitter chocolate from the sherry, to almost dessert-like notes from the vanilla of the Galliano. It’s a cocktail, like a few of the others here, worth talking about as you drink it, which is something I haven’t been able to say in a while. So too is the Foreign Legion, made with rhum agricole, Dubonnet

Rouge and Green Chartreuse. The interplay of the vermouth and the chartreuse adds up to a dark raisin profile somehow. I praised Taylor for sticking to his cocktail guns when rolling out the menu. Have guests been challenged by it? “I’m used to working with a lot of this stuff and explaining it to people,” he says, referring to the trend-setting Eastern Standard bar program. “So although things like Becherovka and Campari can be out there for some people, it’s really not that complicated. The general idea was, ‘Let’s make things that are approachable and fun for people that might not be expecting to walk into the place and get that sort of drink.’ Obviously with cocktails you can go a million different ways, but we’re trying to push things out there. Straight spirit whiskey drinks can be a tough sell, but we’re trying to be a little bit lighter and little more fun.”

Reinventing the wheel, right: Josh Taylor makes a Wheelwright, his signature drink.

Even more fun: Among the more fun recipes is the Conant’s Island, made with a houseinfused cucumber vodka, rice vinegar and green tabasco, which combine for a lightly heated vegetal punch, or King Carnival,

The #1 Irish Sports Bar in the City

Taylor’s current favorite, made with Rhum Clement, St. Germain, Dry Curacao, lime and bitters. “In the whole process of picking spirits, I got enamored with the rums that come out of Martinique, rhum agricole — particularly the Clement House is really good, really

different stuff. It sort of blew my mind to have something in this style that was as smooth as it was.” He calls the King Carnival nice and light, in the daiquiri family for summer, and feminine and masculine at the same time.

Coolidge Corner Theatre 290 Harvard St., Brookline $9, 617-734-2500 Coolidge.org This is the original 1954 film, father to an entire genre of campy monster-destroying-city tales. It’s so legendary now that it’s easy to forget its grounding in the real anxieties of the post-WWII era. The great lizard is a walking, skyscraper-demolishing metaphor for the unpredictable dangers of the atomic age in which we still live. Make no mistake: Godzilla is real!

The roundup THEATER

‘Avenue Q’ Through Sunday Lyric Stage Company 140 Clarendon St., Boston $27-$60, 617-585-5678 Lyricstage.com Here’s your last chance to catch Lyric Stage’s popular run of this unusual 2003 musical. Its employment of “Sesame Street”like puppets as characters in an adult-oriented coming-of-age tale gets the most attention, but its true focus is the disillusionment of a whole generation raised on the simplistic notions of the “self-esteem” movement, closely associated with that beloved children’s program.

MUSIC

‘Invisible Cities’ Saturday and Sunday Hope Central Church 85-87 Seaverns Ave., Jamaica Plain, $10, 617-543-4797 Bostonmetroopera.com Boston Metro Opera presents this work by Christopher Cerrone, based on Italo Calvino’s eponymous novella. Kublai Khan summons Marco Polo to court to describe the cities of his empire, and perhaps explain why the empire is falling apart. The very idea of a city is central here, explored not just as a place but a state of mind. Also, Boston Metro Opera is not affiliated with Metro Boston Newspaper, but maybe we should ask if they’d let us sing a cantata or two. Music for Washington Sunday, 4 p.m. Longfellow House

COMEDY

Bill Santiago Saturday and Sunday Remington’s 124 Boylston St., Boston $15-$20, 800-401-2221 Beantowncomedy.com This comedian of Puerto Rican descent welcomes both Latinos and those he calls the “Latino-curious” to his shows. Some of his best material explores the linguistic curiosity that is Spanglish, which he describes as “twice the vocabulary, half the grammar.” Another bit finds him commending the transition from “Hispanic” to “Latino,” partly because the latter term rhymes with better words, like “cappuccino.”

ART

Masters of the Universe Friday, 8 p.m. Institute of Contemporary Art, 100 Northern Ave., Boston $10-$15, 617-478-3100 www.icaboston.org We were secretly hoping this event was related to “HeMan,” but its real subject is actually much more epic. It includes a gallery talk in the new Josiah McElheny exhibition on the approaches of artists and scientists to imagining the universe’s origins, then an old-school “film strip” on the subject and, finally, some live stargazing on the waterfront.

105 Brattle St., Cambridge Free, 617-876-4491 Phbloom.home.comcast.net Columbia’s Musik, a group dedicated to reproducing early American music, presents a show about early America’s most

mythic figure, the cherry treehating George Washington. Through a mix of war tunes, presidential marches, contemporary chamber music, some of his favorite dance tunes and laments for his death, the audience gets a unique view of Washington and the period of America’s nativity. Marches and Americana: Celebrating America’s Birthday Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. St. John the Evangelist 35 Bowdoin St., Boston Free, 617-227-5242 Stjev.org With all the brassy, bombastic Fourth of July stuff out there, we thought we’d point to something more intimate: this fourhand piano concert by Linda Papatopoli and Bert Yocum. Four hands for the Fourth — get it? For those whose only knowledge of four-hand piano is “Heart and Soul,” this should be an eyeopener — or is “ear-opener” more appropriate?

From Daguerreotype to Digital: Anthropology and Photography Through Aug. 31 Peabody Museum 11 Divinity Ave., Cambridge Free, 617-496-1027 Peabody.harvard.edu This exhibition places itself at the crossroads of two disciplines, both of which were born in the mid-19th century. Anthropologists flocked to photography as a

research tool almost immediately, and it’s been indispensable ever since. Each picture here has multiple dimensions — there’s the person depicted, but also the era, the anthropological purpose and the technology itself. A picture is worth a thousand words indeed!

No timetable on Garnett

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said yesterday that there is no deadline for Kevin Garnett on his decision to return to the Celtics or retire. “We’re having conversations with Kevin but we don’t have any answers on whether he’s coming back or not,” Ainge said. “The sooner we can get Kevin done the better it will be for us.”

CAVALIERS (21-45)

KINGS (22-44)

SF Michael KiddGilchrest (UK) — The 6-foot-7 KiddGilchrist is extremely athletic and can guard multiple positions from bigger lead guards to smallish power forwards.

HORNETS (21-45)

In the news

Metro’s NBA Mock Draft | Round 1 (7 p.m., ESPN)

PF Thomas Robinson (Kansas) — The Cavs will be thrilled Robinson fell to them, as the 6-foot-9 forward physically dominated opponents last year and is relentless around the rim.

5

PF Anthony Davis (UK) — This is obviously a nobrainer, as Davis wrested control of the consensus No. 1 pick by midway through his freshman season. The Hornets won the jackpot — no conspiracy theories here — and will add the best defensive player to come out of college in a long time.

2

BOBCATS (7-59)

SF Harrison Barnes (UNC) — Makes sense on two levels, as the explosive Barnes has been personally scouted by UNC alum Michael Jordan and fills a scoring need.

3

WIZARDS (20-46)

SG Brad Beal (Florida) — Beal may be the purest scorer in the draft. The 6-foot-4 Beal has been compared favorably to Ray Allen for his ability to shoot from anywhere.

6

BLAZERS (28-38)

PF Andre Drummond (UConn) — There isn’t a bigger boom-or-bust player in the draft, but Drummond’s ceiling has been compared to Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire.

7

WARRIORS (23-43)

SG Dion Waiters (’Cuse) — The Warriors need to get bigger in the backcourt and this solid combo-guard possesses great athleticism. The 6-foot-4 Waiters can play off the ball.

8

RAPTORS (23-43)

PG Austin Rivers (Duke) — This may be a little high for many people’s liking, but Rivers possesses the skill-set that general manager Bryan Colangelo covets.

9

THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2012

PISTONS (25-41)

PF John Henson (UNC) — Although limited offensively, the extremely long Henson (6-foot-11) would finally give the Pistons a legit shotblocking presence in the middle.

10

HORNETS (21-45)

PG Kendall Marshall (UNC) — Arguably the best “pure” point guard in the draft, Marshall would fill a void that was left behind following the Chris Paul trade.

11

BLAZERS (28-38)

PG Damian Lillard (Weber St.) — He’s considered 1b after Marshall for best lead guard, as he’s a prolific scorer with a good jumper. The 6-foot-3 Lillard is an aggressive playmaker.

12

ROCKETS (34-32)

C Meyers Leonard (Illinois) — He’s arguably the safest bet at a long career of all the bigs in the draft, as the long and athletic Leonard would finally be a replacement for Yao.

13

SUNS (33-33)

SG Jeremy Lamb (UConn) — Lamb is an explosive athlete with a crazy wingspan. He has great range out to the 3point line and an explosive first step, but needs to bulk up.

14

BUCKS (31-35)

C Tyler Zeller (UNC) — Acquired from Houston, he’s a smart player with a great low-post presence and feel for the game. He’ll help replace Andrew Bogut, who was traded last year.

15

SIXERS (35-31)

PF Terrence Jones (UK) — Jones is an all-around player with decent range and prototypical size (6-foot-9, 252 pounds). His size affords him to defend multiple post positions.

16

ROCKETS (34-32)

SF Terrence Ross (Minnesota) — At 6-foot-7, he’s big enough to play either wing position. He has solid shooting form with a great first step and will offset the Chase Budinger trade.

17

MAVERICKS (36-30)

SF Perry Jones III (Baylor) — He could be what Lamar Odom wasn’t for the Mavs last season, as the 6-foot11 Jones has the ability to play multiple forward spots.

18

ROCKETS (34-32)

PF Jared Sullinger (Ohio St.) — Yes, there are red flags about his back, but according to Sullinger’s camp — and his former coach Thad Matta — he’s fine and will be durable.

19

MAGIC (37-29)

SG Moe Harkless (St. John’s) — He has great length and athleticism, at 6-foot-8, 207 pounds. Harkless also has solid footwork as a face-up offensive player and quickness as well.

20

NUGGETS (38-28)

SG Evan Fournier (France) — Perhaps the only foreign-born player to be drafted in the first round, Fournier is a sneaky scorer in the mold of childhood hero Manu Ginobili.

21

CELTICS (39-27)

SF Royce White (Iowa St.) — A versatile attackthe-rim forward who is big and physical (6-foot-8, 270 pounds). He does have mental concerns though, like a fear of flying.

617-367-2900

22

CELTICS (39-27)

C Fab Melo (‘Cuse) — A true 7-foot center with prototypical length and size (7foot-1, 260 pounds). He’s still raw offensively, but is a supreme shot-blocker and rebounder.

23

HAWKS (40-26)

SF Jeff Taylor (Vanderbilt) — He’s a solid athlete with NBA size (6-foot-7, 215 pounds) and ability. Taylor is an instinctive defender and solid scorer from all over the floor.

24

CAVALIERS (21-45)

C Arnett Moultrie (Miss. St.) — He’s a smooth power forward/center with solid size and length (6-foot-11, 240 pounds), who will fill out into a nice post presence.

25

GRIZZLIES (41-25)

PG Marquis Teague (UK) — Amazingly fast with a great first step, but some say almost too fast for his own good as he plays out of control at times.

Dicey zone Here’s where things start getting dicey for the late round teams. There should be slim pickin’s here: Memphis’ Will Barton to Indiana at 26 Vanderbilt’s Festus Ezeli to the defending champion Heat at 27 Baylor’s Quincy Miller to OKC at 28 Kentucky’s Doron Lamb to Chicago at 29 Washington’s Tony Wroten to Golden State to round out the first round.

The Red Sox (40-35) wasted little time giving Jon Lester a cushion yesterday, ripping off six runs in the first inning and ultimately earning an easy 104 victory at Fenway Park. Toronto’s Ricky Romero lasted just three innings while giving up eight earned runs on seven hits. Dustin Pedroia got things rolling for Boston with an RBI double and Adrian Gonzalez, Will Middlebrooks, Mike Aviles and Darnell McDonald also drove in runs in the Sox’s hot start. Lester improved to 5-5 on the year, working seven in-

nings while allowing four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. The Red Sox now begin a West Coast swing, starting tonight in Seattle (10:10, NESN) when Franklin Morales faces Felix Hernandez. In somewhat surprising news, Sox manager Bobby Valentine suggested that pitcher John Lackey could start pitching before the end of 2012. Lackey is recovering from Tommy John surgery. MATT BURKE

Western union Boston is playing its best baseball of the season and will look to extend its winning ways on the West Coast over the July Fourth holiday. The Red Sox face Seattle this weekend, followed by Oakland before returning home to host the Yankees a week from Friday. Boston is 6.5 games out of first place in the AL East but are just 1.5 out of the wildcard lead.
