Stowaway search No sounds reported since inspector first heard faint knocking in container at Port Newark Possible stowaways could have been trapped inside in the dark for 20 days or even longer SPENCER PLATT/GETTY IMAGES)
A desperate search for possible stowaways continued into last night on a container ship at the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal. Authorities from the Department of Homeland Security spent all day yesterday inspecting the Ville D’Aquarius after a faint knocking was heard coming from inside one of the containers on board, after the ship docked. The ship arrived in Newark from Egypt at around 8:30 a.m. yesterday. “They’ve opened several (containers) but haven’t found anything,” a U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman told Metro. Inspectors used X-rays to examine the contents of the nearly 2,000 containers aboard. Officials told The StarLedger [Newark, N.J.] that it takes approximately eight minutes to search each container. The standard size of these containers ranges from 20 to 40 feet. They are about eight feet tall and eight feet wide. The vessel was originally suspected of carrying stowaways during a routine inspection; authorities knocked on a container and heard knocking back. No sounds were reported since. According to Reuters, the specific container suspected of harboring several stowaways was loaded onto the ship on June 7 in India. Officials were concerned how anyone could survive a 20-day trip trapped in a dark, cramped container. At least seven ambulances waited outside the port’s entrance yesterday. The ship’s manifest said

the container was carrying machine parts. Yesterday was not the first time the port of Newark received possible stowaways. Last year an Egyptian man found living in a New Jersey warehouse claimed he had eluded border patrol by stowing away in a ship that arrived in Newark, reported the Post. Asem Haroon was also suspected of being a terrorist, as the Port is located near several oil refineries, a known target of al Qaeda. DANIELA BERNAL

How could anyone survive? The odds of surviving in cargo containers for a period that long is “somewhat unlikely,” Dr. Mary O’Brien, a New York City physician, told Metro. “Depending on the temperature they could die of hypothermia or heat exhaustion,” explained O’Brien. “The second part is
how much water there is ... if they’re sweating they could be losing a lot of water quickly.” In addition to the heat, freezing to death could also be a concern, as some containers can maintain temperatures of -76 degrees Fahrenheit. O’Brien added that food was not necessarily crucial to survival, but if the container was sealed too tightly it would be possible for the stowaways to use up all the oxygen over the journey. METRO/DB

A Brooklyn gallery that invited women to inject frogs with their urine as a pregnancy test announced yesterday they are canceling the tests after PETA voiced concerns. When informed that the animals would be injected with a syringe, PETA called on Proteus Gowanus to cancel the July 6 event.
Although event organizer Eben Kirksey at first said he would try to make it as painless as possible for the frogs, late yesterday afternoon he told Metro that Proteus Gowanus will cancel the live demo portion. Next Friday he will still be talking about the history of the test, describing how it works and lecturing about frog conservation. METRO/CG

Last summer a beach bummer NYC area beaches closed more than twice as often last year than in 2010 Highest number of closings in more than a decade Hurricane Irene mostly to blame Good news: Many popular city beaches tested clean You might be planning a trip to the beach for the Fourth of July holiday — just cross your fingers a passing thunderstorm doesn’t send sewage runoff into the waters off New York. Beaches were off limits to New Yorkers about double the amount of times last year than in 2010, according to a new study released yesterday by the Natural Resources Defense Council. Most of those beaches were deemed unsafe and had to close because of untreated sewage and dirty stormwater
that ran out of city sewers and contaminated the ocean water, according to the NRDC. More than 70 percent of New York City sewers carry both sewage and stormwater runoff. During heavy storms, these sewers can overflow with

1,841 closing and advisory beach days last year, a 93 percent increase from 956 days in 2010. That’s the highest number of closing and advisories in New York since 2000, when beaches were first required to collect the data, according to the NRDC. Hurricane Irene, which hit the New York City area on Aug. 27 of last year, was a main reason for the increased closures. During Irene alone, 600 pre-emptive beach closures were issued.
Another reason beaches were closed was after 200 million gallons of sewage spilled into the Hudson River when a upriver treatment facility caught on fire in July. But on a more positive note for New Yorkers heading to local beaches for next week’s holiday, 13 beaches met health standards every time they were tested, including four of six parts of Coney Island and all of Rockaway Beach, the report found. 7-Eleven ready to invade New York Good news if you like those Big Gulps: 7-Eleven has plans for 135 locations in city by 2017 But it’s bad news for the many mom-and-pop bakeries, coffee shops and delis nearby Is 7-Eleven taking over New York? Run! The flood is coming — the flood of 7-Elevens, that is. The oft-maligned chain store has plans to greatly expand in New York City, much to the chagrin of some smallbusiness owners. According to Margaret Chabris, the director of public relations at 7-Eleven Inc., the corporation plans for 30 new locations scheduled to open in the city in 2012, and will grow to 135 stores by 2017. “Our experience in New York City over the past several decades has shown that we contribute significantly to the neighborhoods we join,” she
said. “That is why we have targeted growth here.” But those who own and work at stores nearby would beg to differ. The manager of Gramercy Corner, located next door to a 7-Eleven on Third Avenue, said that the store has taken away 40 percent of his deli’s business. “7-Elevens are not made for New York because they are killing the small businesses that New Yorkers have always gone to,” said Amjad, 30, who declined to give his last name. “They are selling the same things that mom-and-pop
stores sell, but people go to them because they’re a big corporation.” Shailyn T. is a 21-year-old barista for Eastside Bakery, located next to the 7-Eleven on St. Mark’s Place. She said the building that houses the bakery has hosted several businesses before it, including a pizza parlor and a restaurant. But nothing ever survives. “I have heard people say that it’s because of 7-Eleven,” she said. “People go there because their stuff is cheaper.” AMANDA BARKER

7-Eleven has ‘sweet’ soda advantage, too As 7-Elevens take New York by storm, many may be surprised to hear that the chain is also exempt from Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s extremely controversial soda ban proposal. Bloomberg’s proposal would make it illegal for restaurants, delis, food carts, sports arenas and movie theaters in New York City to sell sodas or sweetened drinks that are larger than 16 ounces. Grocery and convenience stores are excluded from the proposed ban, and 7-Eleven counts as a convenience store. That means 7-Eleven can keep hawking its infamous Big Gulps, weighing in at 30 ounces of sugary sweet soda for a regular and a whopping 50 ounces of soda in a Double Gulp. METRO/AB

Woman found dead in Astoria A Queens woman was found dead Tuesday night in her Astoria apartment, and police suspect that she was killed during a fight with her live-in boyfriend, for whom police are searching. Danielle Thomas, 27, suffered blunt trauma to the head and was pronounced dead by the time paramedics arrived at the third-floor apartment on 33rd Street near 28th Road. Police suspect her body may have been there for several days before being discovered. Thomas lived with her boyfriend in the apartment, and sources told the New York Post they frequently heard fighting and screaming coming from inside. Law enforcement sources said there is a history of incidents between Thomas and her boyfriend; he was recently arrested for assaulting her. A judge issued a restraining order
against him on June 8. The suspected boyfriend has not yet been found or charged. People out on 33rd Street Tuesday night said they were horrified by the murder. Miron, a 35-year-old Astoria resident who didn’t want to give his last name, said he has lived in the area for four years and never heard anything like this. “I don’t know if I can say I feel safe here, 100 percent,” he said. “This is strange to see here.” But Peggy Krakower, 52, who lives in Glendale and works for a landlord in Astoria, said that alleged domestic violence incidents like this happen a lot. “My theory is that all these women that get killed by their boyfriends and husbands are carrying around an order of protection,” she said. Analysts expect Facebook’s user base to help it corner a substantial share of the Internet advertising market.
The financial houses behind Silicon Valley’s largest-ever coming-out party kicked off formal coverage of the company yesterday by warning about an uncertain business model, margin pressures and a difficult transition to mobile technology. The reports, released by banks involved in the IPO after a 40-day quiet period expired, represent Wall Street’s broadest assessment of the first U.S. company to debut with a market value of more than $100 billion. Morgan Stanley and other major brokerages that handled the blockbuster IPO said it remained unclear how Facebook plans to make money from a growing number of users logging on to the No. 1 social network via smartphones and

Of the 17 brokerages that handled the blockbuster IPO and kicked off coverage of the social networking company yesterday, eight recommended against buying into the shares. Two of Facebook’s three lead underwriters — Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan — were most bullish, targeting Facebook shares at $45 and $42, respectively. Morgan Stanley, which has come under scrutiny for its role in driving a $38 IPO price that now appears lofty to some, stuck to a price target that matched its debut level and “overweight” recommendation. Opponents of decriminalization say it condones drug use and results in a lost opportunity for intervention to stop it.
The Chicago City Council yesterday voted to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, the latest U.S. city to support diminished penalties for the drug’s use. Under the proposal, police officers in the nation’s thirdlargest city would be able to issue a written violation for possession of 15 grams or less rather than make an arrest. Supporters of the ordinance, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, said the measure would help raise revenue for the city, save money and free up police to pursue more serious crimes. More than a dozen states and several large U.S. cities have already taken similar steps. Chicago Police Department statistics indicate that last year there were 18,298 arrests for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana, according to a statement from the mayor's office. Each case involves approximately four officers — two arresting and two transporting officers — and places

an additional burden on the Cook County court and jail system, the statement said. The issue of freeing up police officers for more serious crimes is particularly pressing this year in Chicago, which has seen a 37 percent spike in its murder rate. Fifteen states have reduced the penalty for possession of limited amounts of marijuana, according to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML, a lobbying group working to legalize the drug. Sarah Lee Guthrie reflects on grandpa Woody’s songs as America celebrates what would have been his 100th birthday
Sarah Lee Guthrie says her grandfather, who notoriously had “This Machine Kills Fascists” scrawled on his guitar, would have definitely been involved in the Occupy movement.
Occupy Woodfest Chances are if Woody Guthrie were a young man right now, he wouldn’t be at the Occupy sit-ins. He’d be leading them. “He’d be thrilled to know that people have the guts to
stand up for what they believe in,” says Sarah Lee Guthrie. “He knew that it was powerful to unite and use your voices. It was never about right or left wing, it was about presenting an unbiased account of the facts and then making up your own mind. I think Woody is out there with them.”
Notice how this photo of the Guthrie family is credited to Arlo Guthrie? Isn’t it funny to think of him (the guy with the long white hair) pressing the self-timer button and running into position?
B
orn on July 14, 1912, in Okemah, Oklahoma, Woody Guthrie’s centennial returns the folk icon’s vox pop spirit to the spotlight as dozens of concerts, festivals and tributes play out through the summer and fall all over the world. Not surprisingly, Woody’s son, Arlo, his grandchildren and great grandchildren have their own traveling Guthrie Family Reunion tour. “We’ve only done this once before, and that was years ago,” says Woody’s granddaughter Sarah Lee from her home in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts, which is where she

grew up. “Seventeen of us on one bus and my mom and dad on another. It was one big happy family; a bit different from most family reunions, I’m sure. Now we’ve got three generations of us touring around, and then we have Woody’s spirit, so we’ve got four generations.” At various places, famous Woody Guthrie fans like Billy Bragg, who performs at a special birthday celebration in
Okemah, and Steve Earle, who leads WoodyFest in Manhattan, Woody’s homebase, will join the family in reviving some of his iconic folk paeans. “There are so many of his songs that still ring true,” says Sarah Lee. “You can compare a lot of the old Woody Guthrie songs and they apply to what’s going on today. Songs like ‘Pastures of Plenty’ and ‘I Ain’t Got No Home,’ a lot of those old songs are more important in our lives than they’ve ever been.” LINDA LABAN

About face One dating website matches people according to the shapes of their mugs Why it’s a time-tested method It’s not quite so strange when you really think about it: How many times have you looked at a couple and remarked that they could be brother and sister? Those strange similarities a couple can share are no coincidence. Genetically, we have been trained to seek out those who have a face similar to our own, says founder of FindYourFacemate.com, Christina Bloom. “There’s part of the brain that’s just focused on processing faces. It’s the fusiform gyri. It’s so important that we have a special area in our brain for it,” Bloom says. “If you think about human beings before we had language, or if you think about the way babies are — we learn things visually. That makes sense be-

We just know what we like.” Bloom points to several examples of couples who have similar faces — Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez, and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, for instance. She believes that matching people by their face shapes will ultimately lead to better chemistry and, hopefully, better coupling. “After meeting [a date], you think of, ‘Wow, it’s because of his or her great personality, that’s why I like them.’ Well no,” she says. “You already saw his or her face, and you were interested because of his or her face.” Bloom says that the criteria for a good match comes in this descending order: chemistry, style, values and personweek’s dating section for free! In the next three months, Bloom hopes to improve the algorithm by using 62 points on the face for more specialized matches. To Bloom, the website is just helping us do what we already intuitively know how to do. “I’ve been looking at couples for 20-plus years, and I just think it’s innate,” she says. “Basically, we’re doing it without even knowing that we’re doing it. Jacqueline says: It’s normal that sisters fight, right Kerry? But try not to intervene, unless there is physical violence. You need some ground rules: Absolutely no hitting, namecalling or tattling. It’s important to talk to them separately and when they are calm. Allow them to fully communicate their issue with their sibling and come up with mutual solution. Kerry says: Well said, Jack. And take note of what issues or events start a fight. If they are fighting over who walks the dog, then set a chore chart so it’s clear whose chore is whose. Be sure that each child has personal space, and don’t play favorites! Dear Twins, My son is 24 years old. He still lives with me. Is there a right time to ask a 20-something child to move out of the family house? Jacqueline says: At 20something, your child is certainly mature enough to live on his own. The question is if he has the financial means to do so. If the answer is “yes, then bon voyage! Kerry says: You are very vague. Are you at your wit’s end because he refuses to get a job

Dear Twins, My child is far behind his peers in numbers and speech. I’m terribly worried. Should I be concerned that he’s slow? How can I tell if my child has a learning disability? Kerry says: Some signs of a
possible learning disability include poor grades; reading, writing or math problems; communication problems; difficulty paying attention, inability to remember tasks; feelings of low self-esteem; being easily frustrated; or acting out. If you see some of these signs, contact your child's teacher, who will probably first suggest interventions, such as testing, special education instructors and speaking with the school

On healthy eating Dear Twins, My little girl loves to eat. I am worried as she is much heavier then her classmates. Should I talk to her, and how do I tell my young child that she is becoming obese? Jacqueline says: I’m not sure I
would use the word “obese, but you should tell her you are worried about her health because she is overweight. Obesity is a major cause of heart disease, stroke and other serious health problems. Moreover, children can be
cruel. Surely, she’s heard a snicker or two. One out of every five children between the ages of 6 and 17 is overweight. Be straight with her about your concern. Then change the household diet to good, healthy, low-fat foods. Join her in fun exercise! Kerry says: While I agree with Jacqueline, don’t leave her hanging. Be ready to back it up with some fun and rewarding incentives. For every few pounds she loses, offer her a rewarding surprise. Choose what you can afford, but something she will look forward to. Dear Twins, My kids love to eat! Especially CREATAS
Tater Tots, pizza and fries! How do I get my kids to eat more vegetables? Kerry says: I would try adding
it to their foods by finely chopping it in or pureeing it in their dishes. For example, you might finely chop carrots and mix it into their spaghetti sauce or add it to their hamburgers. Try pureeing fruits in their desserts. Make casseroles with finely
chopped vegetables in the sauce. You can add veggies into tuna or chicken salad, too. Jacqueline says: That sounds like a lot of work, sis. Serve tiny vegetables, like baby carrots and celery, with fun appetizer dips. Get your kids involved and making it fun by having them create their very own vegetable dish of their choosing. Let them get competitive about it by having them each create their own.
Try making healthy food fun.

Jacqueline says: Children learn at different rates during early childhood. Learning disabilities are a category of disorders and affect how the child’s brain processes the information, which makes some concepts very difficult to understand. Suffer a little now, benefit later RE: “ECONOMY NEEDS MORE ATTENTION: During the housing
bubble interest rates were pushed, and kept, too low for too long. This directed labor and resources into the housing market whether it was construction, house flipping, realtors, etc. When the artificial boom turned bust the economy attempted to correct itself by reallocating the misdirected resources from the bubble but our omnipotent benefactors in Washington and the Federal Reserve halted that process by bailing out banks and creating a stimulus bill. What we need is to allow interest rates to return to market levels. Yes, this would mean that we would fall into tougher economic times, for the moment, but we would come
out of this mess with a more stable economy. No amount of stimulus can dig us out of recession; it will only sow the seeds for the next bubble to burst. KELLY DONNOE, NEW YORK

Cancer June 21-July 22. Conditions in general look extremely favorable for you, with one exception: the management of your resources. If you’re cautious in this area, everything will be fine. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Domestic issues should be given priority over all other mundane activities. Once you’ve met these obligations, go ahead and spend your time however you’d like. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. In matters where you allow your emotions to govern your behavior, you aren’t apt to like the results. Conversely, in situations where you logically think things through, all should go well. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. If there’s something special that you want and have been hoping to find at a good price, do your shopping early. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Situations that you think through thoroughly and can personally control should work out rather well, as long as you haven’t overlooked anything. Be sure to check the small details. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. You can be a compassionate person who is ready to be helpful whenever possible. If you get a chance to exercise these fine qualities, keep your good deeds to yourself.

Do they really know what they’re asking?
The Fast and Furious gun running investigation may have been a failure, but there is a curious irony in the related contempt of Congress vote against Attorney General Eric Holder by the Republican-led Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The chair of that committee, Darrell Issa, has a criminal history of his own. In 1971 he was accused of stealing and abandoning a fellow soldier’s car and later, in 1972 he was charged with stealing a Maserati. The case was later dismissed. Also in 1972, police found him in possession of a concealed weapon. He pleaded to a lesser charge. The high mindedness of this Republican legislator seems somewhat diminished by his shady past.
Anticipating the round of cheers at the possible Supreme Court ruling that key elements of Obamacare (if not the entire law itself) are unconstitutional, consider what such a ruling will mean: private insurance companies can go back to denying coverage to anyone they dislike, raise premiums whenever they want, cut services as they wish, refuse to cover whatever their accountants can dispute, and continue to commit fraud with impunity. A rising tide to support Louisiana’s seafood industry L
ouisiana shrimp has a sweetness that holds up to the most aggressive seasonings, from Old Bay to nam pla, and a firm texture that withstands the rigors of the grill without losing its tenderness. This sweetness and resilience also describes the culture of Louisiana, which is still struggling to recover from the recent blows to its habitat. Starting today, 19 New York restaurants are stepping up to help, by participating in the first Louisiana Shrimp Week. “We’re trying to keep our culture and heritage alive and well,” says Ewell Smith, Executive Director of the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board. Crucial to that effort, he says, is rebuilding the seafood industry. “Over 90 percent of the shrimp that’s consumed in the U.S. is imported. We’re trying to make our claim to a very important niche.” The shrimp’s safety is not, and has never been, an issue -contaminated seafood has never entered the marketplace. Says Smith, “The seafood coming from the Gulf is probably still the most tested food source in the world … and will be for a long time to come.”
Sustainable seafood Beyond its cultural importance, Louisiana shrimp is sustainable and wild-caught, which is why chef Michael Cressotti of The Mermaid Inn prefers it. As part of Shrimp Week, he’s serving a trio of fire-roasted Louisiana prawns with Old Bay aioli and smoked sea salt. “We need to give something back,” he says. “It’s our way of running a seafood restaurant and supporting a region, and doing what we can do to help.”

Ultimately, these chefs’ passion for Gulf shrimp lies in its flavor, and chef Michael Ferraro of Delicatessen created a dish to let that flavor shine. “Louisiana shrimp,” he says, “just like local oysters, all have

Rye Rye serves up ‘POP!’ with a ‘BANG!’ B
altimore-based rapper Rye Rye had her breakout hit at 16; but, due to the usual hold-ups, it took almost three years for her debut album to be released. She kept busy though, performing with with M.I.A. and the Neptunes and recording the theme to the new “21 Jump Street.” Still baby-voiced and now even brassier-mouthed, Rye Rye is on tour promoting the long-awaited album, “GO! POP! BANG!” — which is as danceable as it sounds. “It’s very upbeat,” she tells us. “It’s grimy, it’s hard and it’s fun. It’s like ghetto house music.”
Rye Rye will be opening for neo-disco act Scissor Sisters July 6 and 7 at Terminal 5.
Unlike many young artists, you weren’t discovered; you actually promoted yourself — by leaving a rap on Blaqstarr’s answering machine. How did you work up the nerve?
Q&A Are you excited to finish out the tour in New York? Of course. I’m glad that we’re ending in the East Coast, because that’s where I’m from. It’s always a blast to be able to connect with people that you’re close with, from the same area. And of course, it’s New York, right? — I love New York. So it’s going to be dope.
I used to write sometimes, poetry or R&B songs. And I randomly wrote a rap song one day. So Blaqstarr was friends with my sister, and he asked me if I knew how to rap. I said no, because I didn’t know if I did or not. But it inspired me to write
a whole rap song, so I finished it. I kind of wanted to try it, so I was like, “I’ll call his phone.” And I was hoping that he didn’t answer, so that it would go to the answering machine. Because if he would have answered, I probably would have hung up. I don’t think I would have done it. So what happened next?
I went to the club later on that night, and I ran into him. And he was like, “I really liked the first verse to your song, can you spit it for us right here?” And I was like, “No way! I’m hot, I’m sweaty, I just got done dancing.” I was basically just being shy, and I left. ... But eventually we started working in the studio together. In your recordings with Robyn and M.I.A., two really strong female performers, you never outshine or overpower
each other. What was it like working with them?
It was cool working with M.I.A., because she’s very humble and we can relate. We both weren’t afraid to be different artists and to be ourselves. She had a real spirit. I looked at her as a homegirl, like someone that I’ve been friends with for a long time — that’s the vibe she gave me; she was really down-toearth. On the other hand, with Robyn, when we recorded a track we didn’t record in the studio together. But I met her after. ... She had so much good advice, and she was very sweet. Who would you like to work with in the future?
I would love to work with Missy Elliott. That’s one female I’m dying to work with. REBECCA FINKEL

Malagousia, Moschofilero? Don’t worry — it’s Greek to all of us Master Sommelier Doug Frost breaks down his favorites and finds a Greek wine for every tongue
G
reek wines are relatively new to the American market, and with long names like Agiorgitiko and Moschofilero, they can be a little intimidating. Doug Frost, one of three people in the world who holds the titles of master sommelier and master of wine, calls the arrival of Greek wines a genuine movement. He says that Greece’s turmoil has taken a toll on the wine industry — but now there are finally high-quality wines, especially white wines, that can be bought at relatively low prices. Despite Greece’s hot climate, Frost says that the grapes retain their acidic identity, allowing for crisp, citrusy wines — something he says California winemakers dream of. We asked the master to break down some of the best ways to enjoy these wines.
Assyrtiko: This grape mainly
grows on the island of Santorini and pairs well with foods like mussels and oysters. “The jolt of acidity is kind of like lemon over your oysters,” Frost says. He adds that there’s really

He begins to say it’s like a highquality Chablis, but stops himself: “Even that is a silly comparison.” Moschofilero: Don’t let the aromatic, floral smell trick you into thinking that this is a sweet wine. Frost recommends serving it as an opener to a meal with appetizers like veggies and simple seafood. Malagousia: This is a fairly new wine, with aromas of peach and apricot. It’s citrusy and tangy and a bit richer in body. Frost recommends having it with grilled scallops and lobster. Agiorgitiko: Since Greek wines are still relatively unknown in the U.S., Frost says Agiorgitiko is the one people understand the most. Its red cherry flavors make it comparable to a pinot noir. It pairs well with mediumbodied dishes like chicken and mushrooms.

OK, so we all know who is going to go No. 1 overall It is entirely likely Davis is the only franchise player in the draft But there is a lot of depth to this intriguing class Metro’s NBA Mock Draft | Round 1 (7 p.m., ESPN)
2
BOBCATS (7-59)
SF Harrison Barnes (UNC) — Makes sense on two levels, as the explosive Barnes has been personally scouted by UNC alum Michael Jordan and fills a scoring need.
3
WIZARDS (20-46)
SG Brad Beal (Florida) — Beal may be the purest scorer in the draft. The 6-foot-4 Beal has been compared favorably to Ray Allen for his ability to shoot from anywhere.
In the news
4
Spain first to punch ticket to Euro 2012 final
CAVALIERS (21-45)
PF Thomas Robinson (Kansas) — The Cavs will be thrilled Robinson fell to them, as the 6-foot-9 forward physically dominated opponents last year and is relentless around the rim.
In another 0-0 tie through 120 minutes, Spain defeated archrival Portugal on penalty kicks, 4-2. Cesc Fabregas nailed the game-winner — a shot that ricocheted off the left post — for Spain, who was largely outplayed in the match. Meanwhile, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t even included in the PKs and spit at a cameraman after the game. METRO
5
KINGS (22-44)
SF Michael KiddGilchrest (UK) — The 6-foot-7 KiddGilchrist is extremely athletic and can guard multiple positions from bigger lead guards to smallish power forwards.
6
BLAZERS (28-38)
PF Andre Drummond (UConn) — There isn’t a bigger boom-or-bust player in the draft, but Drummond’s ceiling has been compared to Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire.
In the news
7
Shopping Gasol The Lakers are reportedly shopping power forward Pau Gasol prior to tonight’s draft. ESPN reports Los Angeles is looking for a player and a lottery pick in return. Though they also reported the Lakers did not have a deal imminent. Gasol averaged 17.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game last season, but the Lakers were sent home in five games by the Thunder.
THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2012
HORNETS (21-45)
PF Anthony Davis (Kentucky) — This is obviously a no-brainer, as Davis wrested control of the consensus No. 1 pick by midway through his freshman season. The Hornets won the jackpot — no conspiracy theories here — and will add the best defensive player to come out of college in a long time. He has a solid offensive game though too. He grew to 6-foot-11 late in life and has good ball skills because of it.
WARRIORS (23-43)
SG Dion Waiters (‘Cuse) — The Warriors need to get bigger in the backcourt and this solid combo-guard possesses great athleticism. The 6-foot-4 Waiters can play off the ball.
8
RAPTORS (23-43)
PG Austin Rivers (Duke) — This may be a little high for many people’s liking, but Rivers possesses the skill-set that general manager Bryan Colangelo covets.
WWW.METRO.US WWW.METRO.US/SPORTS EVEN MORE DRAFT COVERAGE ONLINE
9
PISTONS (25-41)
PF John Henson (UNC) — Although limited offensively, the extremely long Henson (6-foot-11) would finally give the Pistons a legit shotblocking presence in the middle.
10
HORNETS (21-45)
PG Kendall Marshall (UNC) — Arguably the best “pure” point guard in the draft, Marshall would fill a void that was left behind following the Chris Paul trade.
11
BLAZERS (28-38)
PG Damian Lillard (Weber St.) — He’s considered 1b after Marshall for best lead guard, as he’s a prolific scorer with a good jumper. The 6-foot-3 Lillard is an aggressive playmaker.
12
ROCKETS (34-32)
C Meyers Leonard (Illinois) — He’s arguably the safest bet at a long career of all the bigs in the draft, as the long and athletic Leonard would finally be a replacement for Yao Ming.
13
SUNS (33-33)
SG Jeremy Lamb (UConn) — Lamb is an explosive athlete with a crazy wingspan. He has great range out to the 3point line and an explosive first step, but needs to bulk up.
14
BUCKS (31-35)
C Tyler Zeller (UNC) — Acquired from Houston, he’s a smart player with a great low-post presence and feel for the game. He’ll help replace Andrew Bogut, who was traded last year.
15
SIXERS (35-31)
PF Terrence Jones (UK) — Jones is an all-around player with decent range and prototypical size (6-foot-9, 252 pounds). His size affords him to defend multiple post positions.
16
ROCKETS (34-32)
SF Terrence Ross (Minnesota) — At 6-foot-7, he’s big enough to play either wing position. He has solid shooting form with a great first step and will offset the Chase Budinger trade.
17
MAVERICKS (36-30)
SF Perry Jones III (Baylor) — He could be what Lamar Odom wasn’t for the Mavs last season, as the 6-foot11 Jones has the ability to play multiple forward spots.
18
ROCKETS (34-32)
PF Jared Sullinger (Ohio St.) — Yes, there are red flags about his back, but according to Sullinger’s camp — and his former coach Thad Matta — he’s fine and will be durable.
19
MAGIC (37-29)
SG Moe Harkless (St. John’s) — He has great length and athleticism, at 6-foot-8, 207 pounds. Harkless also has solid footwork as a face-up offensive player and quickness as well.
20
NUGGETS (38-28)
SG Evan Fournier (France) — Perhaps the only foreign-born player to be drafted in the first round, Fournier is a sneaky scorer in the mold of childhood hero Manu Ginobili.
21
CELTICS (39-27)
SF Royce White (Iowa St.) — A versatile attackthe-rim forward who is big and physical (6-foot-8, 270 pounds). He does have mental concerns though, like a fear of flying.
22
CELTICS (39-27)
C Fab Melo (‘Cuse) — A true 7-foot center with prototypical length and size (7foot-1, 260 pounds). He’s still raw offensively, but is a supreme shot-blocker and rebounder.
23
PG Marquis Teague (UK) — Amazingly fast with a great first step, but some say almost too fast for his own good as he plays out of control at times.
26
PACERS (42-24)
SG Will Barton (Memphis) — He’s a solid scorer with decent NBA range. The long and athletic Barton is an aggressive, attacking player with a knack for scoring in bunches.
27
HEAT (46-20)
C Festus Ezeli (Vandy) — The 6foot-11, 260pounder has prototypical NBA size and athleticism at center. He has solid physical tools and can hold his own on both ends.
28
THUNDER (47-19)
SF Quincy Miller (Baylor) — Miller is a wiry scorer with a tremendous wingspan for a 6-foot-10 forward. Although he’s slightly undersized at 220 pounds, he’s a solid defender.
29
BULLS (50-16)
SG Doron Lamb (Kentucky)— Known as the “other” Lamb in this draft, the UK product should not be slept on, as he can play multiple positions, including point guard.
30
WARRIORS (23-43)
SG Tony Wroten (Washington) — The crafty southpaw is an extremely athletic combo-guard who can run the point or play off the ball. He’s still raw but can run the floor.
HAWKS (40-26)
SF Jeff Taylor (Vanderbilt) — He’s a solid athlete with NBA size (6-foot-7, 215 pounds) and ability. Taylor is an instinctive defender and solid scorer from all over the floor.
24
25
GRIZZLIES (41-25)
CAVALIERS (21-45)
C Arnett Moultrie (Miss. St.) — He’s a smooth power forward/center with solid size and length (6-foot-11, 240 pounds), who will fill out into a nice post presence.
Trading places The chances of the draft going exactly as scheduled are small. Last year there were 12 draft day trades. A few of the more likely trading options include Houston, who has three picks in the top 18. The Bobcats, at No. 2, are also reportedly listening to offers.

Mets pound Cubs, 17-1 Save some runs for the rest of the seasons, boys. The Mets lit up the Cubs, 17-1, on a windy day at Wrigley Field yesterday. Daniel Murphy, who hadn’t hit a homer in more than 300 at-bats coming into the game, hit two yesterday and drove in four runs. He was one four players — David Wright, Scott Hairson and Ike Davis — to drive in at least four. Overshadowed was Jon Niese (6-3), who went seven innings. Hours later, he was facing life without CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte. After finding out Sabathia would miss at least two starts with a Grade 1 strain of his left abductor muscle (groin) before the game, Girardi watched Pettitte go down with a fractured left ankle in the fifth inning of a 5-4 win over Cleveland. “It’s not what you’re looking for, I can tell you that,” Girardi said. “When I came to the park, I felt pretty good about the way we have been playing. That’s the bottom line.” “We just got to weather the storm,” Pettitte said. “Nobody is going to feel sorry for you as far as injuries. We got a lot of good stuff going on here. We got plenty of guys that can do the job. It’s time to put my pompoms on and be a cheerleader for six weeks or so.”
CC injury was surprise The Yankees placed CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abductor muscle in his left leg. He is expected to miss two starts and return after the All-Star break. “He doesn’t want to go on [the DL], but he understands it’s the best thing to do,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Missing two starts is better than seven or eight.” Sabathia struggled in his last start against the Mets, but there was no hint of injury. “The bottom line is he felt it sometime during the Mets game and didn’t tell anyone about it,” general manager Brian Cashman said. “I knew it was hurt and I wanted to see if I could go out and try to pitch,” Sabathia said. METRO
Pettitte fractured his ankle with nobody out when Casey Kotchman’s ground ball deflected off his leg. As the ball bounced towards third base, Pettitte struggled to put weight on his foot when he fielded it and fell to the ground. Girardi, pitching coach Larry Rothchild and the training staff ran out of the dugout to get a look. They watched Pettitte throw a few warm-up pitches and it seemed that would be able to stay in. But on the next pitch to Lou Marson, he winced in pain and was taken out. “I just figured I could figure a way to get through the inning even though I couldn’t push off like I wanted to,” Pettitte said. “I figured I would go the other direction with it, go slower and maybe get some grounders. The first pitch I threw, I pushed off and [it was] just a lot of pain shooting straight down into my foot. So as soon as I did that, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to throw another pitch.” LARRY FLEISHER sports@metro.us
