Church prays for return of pastor held in Egypt Egyptian officials working on release of hostages through weekend Mattapan pastor, Everett woman taken hostage by Bedouin tribesman COURTNEY SACCO/METRO
While 61-year-old Pastor Michel Louis spent a third day as a hostage in Egypt, his Mattapan congregation crowded into a sweltering church and prayed for his safe return home. A man who is demanding the release of his uncle took Louis, along with an Everett woman and their tour guide, as hostages on Friday. Yesterday, Egyptian officials were planning talks to secure the release of Louis and Lisa Alphonse, 39, according to Reuters. “He’s our pastor and we’re praying for him,” said Villa LaBranche, as he left a Mass at Louis’ church yesterday afternoon. “It’s very sad because we didn’t expect this.” Louis and Alphonse were part of a group missionary trip to Israel by way of Egypt when the incident occurred. The group was on a bus in the mountains of Egypt when the hostage-takers stopped the vehicle. Louis’ wife was al-

A Bedouin tribesman, Germy Abu Masouh, said he had kidnapped the people in central Sinai in protest at the jailing of his uncle on drug charges, according to Reuters. In an interview with the Associated Press, Abu Masouh said the hostages were being treated as guests, and fed well, and were allowed to use the phone.
A spokesman for the State Department said they had no updates yesterday. “We are aware that two U.S. citizens were kidnapped on the Sinai Peninsula on July 13. We continue to be in close contact with Egyptian authorities, who are doing everything they can to bring about their safe release,” said John Echard, a State Department spokesman.

MBTA officials are looking into whether a worker was sleeping on the job after an anonymous T rider tweeted a photo to transit police that shows a male employee allegedly catching a few Zs. MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo confirmed that officials are investigating the incident, which he said happened at Park Street station before midnight Sunday. The image was posted as a response to a tweet by transit police asking riders to notify them if they see anyone on the T who needed shelter during Saturday’s blistering heat. The response said, “@MBTATransitPD looks like someone needs shelter, or a bed.” In May, a veteran transit officer admitted to sleeping at his desk and faced “disciplinary action” after a rider snapped a photo at a Mattapan station and tweeted it to the public. Syrian civil war sees fierce fighting within capital walls AFP/GETTY IMAGES
Artist removes halo from JoPa on mural in protest The artist who painted a post-mortem halo over Joe Paterno’s head on a mural featuring the late Penn State football coach erased it at the weekend following a report that found Paterno helped cover up child sex abuse by a former assistant coach. Michael Pilato said he removed the halo on the outdoor mural in State College, Pa., home of the main Pennsylvania State University campus, and also painted a blue ribbon for child abuse awareness on Paterno’s suit.
“I think Joe Paterno is an amazing human being. I think he made a major bad decision in his life,” Pilato, 43, told Reuters in a phone interview to explain why he altered his mural titled “Inspiration” that was unveiled 12 years ago. The move came two days after former FBI Director Louis Freeh released a scathing report that said Penn State leaders, including Paterno, covered up former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of children for years.
The past week saw mortars fired inside the capital for what appeared to be the first time. Clashes have taken place at night with increasing frequency, while intensive battles during the day appear to be a new sign of the seriousness of the conflict.

Opposition fighters battled Syrian government forces in Damascus yesterday in what residents described as the fiercest fighting yet inside the city limits of the capital. Numerous residents contacted by Reuters said they could hear loud explosions, persistent gunfire and sirens wailing. Thick black smoke was visible above the Damascus skyline in live Internet video links. “I can’t believe it, it sounds incredibly close. I hear shooting and other stuff, like blasts. I can hear the sounds of ambulances rushing past. I am so afraid. People may die tonight,” said a resident in a district close to the fighting, contacted by telephone. Activist Samir al-Shami, who spoke to Reuters by Skype from Damascus, said the fighting was under way in the alTadamon district in the capital’s south, after a night of sustained battles in the nearby Hajar al-Aswad district. “There is the sound of heavy gunfire. And there is smoke rising from the area. There are already some wounded, and residents are trying to flee the area,” he said, using Skype to show live video images of smoke visible over the skyline.

“This area has had a lot of fighting. ... The area is kind of a slum. The people who live there are poor. There's a lot of people and a lot of grassy areas around it, so it's easy for rebels to sneak in and out.” ACTIVIST SAMIR AL-SHAMI
“There are also armored vehicles heading toward the southern part of the neighborhood,” he said. Like others contacted by Reuters, he described it as the most intense fighting he had heard in the capital. An explosion hit a security forces bus in Damascus yesterday and wounded several people, activists said. Residents said they heard a powerful blast, followed by the sirens of ambulances rushing toward Damascus’s southern ring road near the neighborhood of Midan. REUTERS

Your humanities degree may soon become ancient history ZOONAR
Toby Miller’s latest book is his most confrontational, polemic piece of writing to date. In “Blow Up the Humanitiesâ€? — which will be released by Temple University Press in August — the longtime author and media studies professor skewers his own field, painting humanities departments as antiquated relics with an overtly class-conscious agenda. “It used to be that you couldn’t get into Yale unless you were proficient in ancient Greek. The idea was that they would produce ‘cultivated gentlemen who would be leaders of the country.’ Eventually they dropped classical languages as the core and turned toward English literature and so on,â€? says Miller, who is the chair of the media and cultural studies program at the University of California, Riverside. “At the same time the big land-grant universities were looking for a much more applied form of humanities. ‌ That’s why if you go to the University of Michigan or Illinois, you learn speech communication — but if you go to Yale or Harvard, you learn English literature.â€? Pointing to a downward
trend in student engagement, research and publication opportunities, Miller proposes a decidedly practical curriculum focused on the job skills most students need. “Whether you work in PR or Metro or Greenpeace or Coca-Cola, you need to
know how to design a webpage, the basics of narrative art, how software and hardware work and the conditions of labor in those areas, says Miller. “I’m looking for something that’s very applied, in the way business is, but also has a criti-
cal edge, dealing with questions of labor and the environment, and not just how you can make a buck and become a corporate boss. BRUCE WALSH

Even for a zombie film, things are getting messy on the set of “World War Z.” After rewrites, the price tag is inching toward $170 million and the studio still isn’t happy with the ending, according to Vulture. It’s so tense that Brad Pitt — who stars as a U.N. employee tasked with interviewing survivors after a worldwide undead attack — is rumored to no longer be on speaking terms with director Marc Forster, who may be replaced for upcoming reshoots.

There isn’t anyone more surprised than Tom Hamilton that it’s taken Aerosmith more than a decade to make a new album. With “Music From Another Dimension” recorded and slated for release this fall, it seems that there’s no one more excited than the band’s bassist, either. “It’s a moment I’ve visualized in my head for a long time. Right now, we’re at that point where it’s being mastered. I wish it was out today. It’s torture,” says Hamilton with a laugh. “Of course, we’ve had compilations and the blues album ‘Honkin’ On Bobo’ in 2004. But, yeah, this is the first album of new material we’ve put out in 10 years. It’s unbelievable that it took that long.” It’s not like Aerosmith needs any more great songs. After 42 years of notching up crowd-pleasers, the band can tour without a new record. “Some of us have the desire to prove ourselves and not be part of that club, that club that says, ‘I don’t want to face the demon of making a new record,’” Hamilton says. “A lot of people say, ‘Let’s just go out on the road and not put ourselves through the demands and pressures of making an al-

hen authors Tim Donahue and Jim Patterson looked at theater career books in publication, they quickly noticed that the lion’s share were focused on actors. There’s a simple problem with that: Most jobs in theater are in something other than acting. With “Theater Careers: A Realistic Guide,” Donahue and Patterson have attempted to create a thorough, data-driven analysis of the various careers in theater — from house manager to technical director, from marketing and beyond. “I think my MBA background leads to a certain slant: wanting to talk about numbers and dollars, and not so much about feelings and art,” explains Donahue, who was the director of marketing and development at the University of South Carolina’s theater department until his recent retirement. Donahue certainly delved deep into the numbers — em-

ployment statistics, specifically — perhaps more so than any book of this kind to date. But to find reliable data on theater majors, oddly, he had to turn to the National Science Foundation’s 2003 Survey of College Graduates. “The NSF is only interested in math and science, but they collect information on all majors. … On average drama majors make about $46,000 — this includes people at all stages of life,” explains Donahue. “Fifteen percent of drama majors are making less than $15,000, and you might expect that. But seven percent of business majors are also making less than $15,000. So while a theater degree does carry risk, there is perhaps more risk in a ‘practical’ major than we once thought.”

specifically sought out former actors who found meaningful work after their moment in the spotlight fizzled. “We know, because of our experience in the theater, that actors are important — but in many ways, they’re a minority of theater workers,” says Patterson. “Just look at the credits on a solo or two-person show on Broadway: There are sometimes over 200 people employed on the production.” A theater degree may not be as risky as once assumed.

When and how to play hardball with your boss It’s not easy when what you want is right in front of you, but you’re not quite sure how to get it. At work you may feel that you deserve a raise or that you’re the best candidate for a promotion, but you don’t know how to let your boss know it. While your track record should do most of the talking, we’ve learned a few tricks that may help tip the scales in your favor.
Be prepared This cannot be stressed enough. Make sure that you can point to specific achievements during your negotiations. “You must have already sold the individual on the idea that you are the candidate for the position,” says Grant Cardone, author of “If You’re Not First, You’re Last” and executive producer of National Geographic’s “Turnaround King.” In addi-
tion, Morgan Norman, cofounder/CEO of performance management system WorkSimple, says that “your manager needs to understand why you deserve a new job title or more money, as opposed to just saying you want it.”

Razing Paterno’s legacy raises hackles Metro, you should be ashamed of yourself for the cover page of last Friday’s issue, showing a picture of Joe Paterno’s statue with the headline “TIME TO TEAR IT DOWN.” Your job is to report the news, not advocate your opinion. And, for your information, the NCAA is not considering giving Penn State University’s football the death penalty — because under the rules, they are not eligible for it. The only people “debating” such an action are the few random folks you cherry-picked from Twitter. While the fact that four people (one deceased) covered up Sandusky’s acts is reprehensible, it does not warrant punishing dozens of football players and
thousands of students who had nothing to do with this scandal. From now on, just report the news and leave the opinions to the letters page. ALEX BAILEY, VIA E-MAIL
Reading Joe Paterno’s selfserving op ed proved just one thing: At the time of his death, he still didn’t get it. Shockingly, not once was the word “victim” mentioned in his diatribe. Nor was there remorse — just the same primary concern about upholding the imagery of Penn State’s reputation. Sadly, he missed the fact that reputations are built from strong will and character, the kind of character that makes one stand up against adversity and fight for truth and justice, no matter what the difficulty or
myletters&games consequences. Paterno sounded like a businessman protecting his Trojan horse of a company. Would Paterno the father be concerned about “reputations” had his son or daughter been raped and abused? What becomes of the children who struggle for a lifetime with sexual uncertainty, alcoholism and drug abuse as a means to cope — all because they trusted an adult? Whether or not the school decides to take down his statue, its symbolism will ring as hollow as Paterno’s shallow final words.
exactly what Paterno did with regards to Sandusky’s sexual abuse of children! Say what you want, he allowed this to continue. As a victim of child sexual abuse myself, no matter what their contribution, people who allow this to happen should not be honored or idolized. Open your eyes.

Kevin Youkilis returns to Fenway Park tonight for the first time since being traded.
It will be a homecoming of sorts tonight (7, NESN) at Fenway Park as nine-year member of the Red Sox, Kevin Youkilis, will make his return to Boston just three weeks after being dealt to the White Sox. When Youkilis missed a significant amount of time early in the season with a back injury, Will Middlebrooks was called up from Pawtucket to fill the void at third base. Middlebrooks made the most of his opportunity by hitting .316 with six home runs in the month of May alone. When Youkilis returned from the disabled list in late May, manager Bobby Valentine was forced to juggle the line up day in and day out to give the two players adequate play-

ing time. This move forced other players into positions they weren’t accustomed to playing. Middlebrooks continued to swing the bat well, while
Youkilis struggled, hitting just .233 with four home runs in 42 games with the Red Sox. It became apparent a move needed to be made, and that is what the Red Sox did on June 24 when they sent Youkilis to the White Sox in exchange for utility man Brent Lillibridge and minor league pitcher Zach Stewart. The change in scenery has truly benefitted Youkilis, as the third baseman is hitting .295 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in just 16 games with the White Sox. He even earned the AL Player of the Week award for the week prior to the All-Star break. Meanwhile, Middlebrooks’ productivity has dropped a bit since the trade, partly due
to a hamstring injury, which forced him to miss the entire final series before the All-Star break. With the ovation Youkilis got after exiting his last game in a Red Sox uniform three weeks ago, it should be quite the scene tonight when the two-time World Series champion steps to the plate, back in the batters box he called home for nine seasons. RYAN HANNABLE sports@metro.us
Doc Rivers refuses to talk about it, but he might be the only one in the Rivers family to take that liberty. Jeremiah Rivers, Doc’s oldest son, is in Las Vegas for summer league with the Knicks, and talked to Metro Boston about Ray Allen’s decision to leave the Celtics for the Heat. “I was surprised, but at the end of the day he’s the all-time NBA 3-point leader, best NBA 3-point shooter of all-time, he’s won an NBA championship, All-Star games, he has the right to do whatever he wants at this stage of his career,” Rivers said of Allen. “I think it was very tough, but no hard feelings. He helped us win a championship.” Allen has always been one to take younger players under his arms. That was also the case with Jeremiah, who said Allen was influential in his career dating back to his college years. JIMMY TOSCANO
3 Sox win
Take Rays series Josh Beckett worked six innings yesterday, allowing eight hits and three earned while striking out seven in a 7-3 Red Sox victory in Tampa. Mikes Aviles and Daniel Nava both homered for Boston. The Red Sox are now just 1.5 games out in the second AL wildcard standings.
