Boy dies after sand tunnel collapses A 12-year-old boy died Tuesday after a sand tunnel he was creating collapsed on top of him, officials said yesterday. According to NBC, the boy was at a beach in Long Branch, N.J., creating a sand tunnel with friends when it collapsed on top of him, apparently weighing down his chest with the sand. Lifeguards attempted CPR, and he was taken to the hospital but later died, according to NBC. METRO/AB

Ads on the way for front of MetroCard For the first time ever, the MTA is selling ad space on the front of MetroCards, the agency announced yesterday. The MTA first introduced the signature golden MetroCards in 1997, and the transit agency first started selling fullcolor ad space on the back of the cards in 1995. But the MTA has never sold the valuable front space of the
ads — until now. The MTA would not disclose pricing for advertising on the front of the cards, but said that space would be offered at a premium. Advertisers can buy space on the backs of MetroCards for anywhere from 18 to 51 cents per card, depending on the quantity of cards

purchased, and ad campaigns have ranged from as little as $25,500 to as high as $450,000. How soon can we start seeing the ads? According to MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan, advertisers can start buying the ad space today, and the cards will start being distributed
as early as September. The MTA has made no secret it wants to expand its advertising; it launched ads on the interior and exterior of trains, as well as full train wraps and digital ads outside the subway system. The agency says increasing ad sales are a way of raising badly needed revenue. CARLY BALDWIN

See and nearly touch the space shuttle Enterprise Hard-won shuttle opens to New Yorkers today Can’t sit in the cockpit, though Ever wanted to go nose to nose with a space shuttle? You can today, at the opening of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum’s exhibit of the shuttle Enterprise. After years of city officials planning and begging for a shuttle to display, the prized NASA gift is available for the public to step near enough to — almost — touch. Metro previewed the new exhibit, inside a cavernous blue bubble on the flight deck. Visitors can walk under the shuttle or climb stairs to look at it head-on, staring at the nose and peering up toward the cockpit windows. Panels around the perimeter explain how the shuttle was used for flight training and tests after the space shuttle Columbia exploded in 2003 — a flight door still shows scrapedoff silicon. “She’s got a very long history,” Eric Boehm, the museum’s aviation curator, said of the shuttle. At yesterday’s unveiling was an astronaut very familiar with the ship — Fred Haise, a commander who flew multiple flights with the Enterprise. The flights, ensuring that the orbiter could guide to a safe landing, were short, he said, less than five minutes, and full of tests. “Those flights are very short, when we were dropped off,” he said. “It flew much better than even our simulation.” And they landed in a runway created in a lakebed, he

Mario Runco, an astronaut who flew in the sister shuttles Atlantis and Endeavor, described liftoff as “a lot of noise, a lot of violence, a lot of shaking.” The best moment, he said, was his first spacewalk. “Being on a spacewalk and looking out into the universe and being confronted with infinity,” he said. “Infinity is a really hard concept to deal with, especially when it’s in your face.” He added, “The thing that I remember about landing, after they lift the hatch and you go outside, you smell Earth again. That was amazing because I didn’t realize it as something I

Olympics: Man vs. beast
A
s the world catches Olympic fever, we marvel at the agility and skill of our country’s best and brightest athletes. With years of training and preparation for the upcoming games in London, their dedication and determination go unmatched. In just a few short days, we will watch the Earth’s most elite athletes shatter world records and defy the odds of greatness. But as the Nature Conservancy reminds us, no matter how fast, strong or agile Team USA athletes prove to be, they are still pretty much no match at all for wild animals. In an effort to bring awareness to planet protection, the Nature Conservancy put American Olympic athletes head to head with the abilities of wild beasts. And in each instance, nature wins. Take a look at these real-life man vs. wild comparisons: 1. Michael Phelps may have

superhuman speed in the pool, but he is still no match for one of nature’s best swimmers. The bluefin tuna, found off the coast of Long Island, can reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Phelps taps out at a measly 6 miles per hour in the water. 2. Even the fastest man in the world can’t compete with the fastest animal in the world. The cheetah can run 71 miles per hour for more than 300 yards. Usain Bolt clocks in at 28 miles per hour over 110 yards. Impressive, but no match for nature.

3. Tennis star Roger Federer is plenty quick on his feet, bolting back and forth across the court to lunge at every serve. But the white-handed gibbon is far more agile, with its ability to fling itself up to 50 feet between branches. 4. Nobody can argue that Kerrie Walsh’s 47-inch vertical on the sand volleyball court isn’t astounding — except the mountain lion. The wildcat has Walsh beat in the jump department with an unmatched 15-foot vertical.

One year after Anthony Weiner admitted to sexting a college coed on Twitter, Huma Abedin, right, said she loves and is standing by her husband.
Disgraced ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner and his wife gave an exclusive interview to People magazine yesterday, saying they are trying to recover from last summer’s sexting scandal that cost Weiner his seat in office — and many speculated would cost him his marriage, as well. But instead, Huma Abedin, who is the deputy chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said the couple is still bound by love. “He did a really stupid thing,” Abedin, 37, said. “I’m proud to be married to him. It was an extremely painful time. But there was love and a commitment to this marriage. “It took a lot of work to get to where we are today, but I want people to know we’re a

But McCain called the attacks “unwarranted and unfounded.” “These allegations about Huma ... are nothing less than an attack on an honorable citizen, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant. ... With a baby, it is pretty easy to put things into perspective. Things happen for a reason; 2011 was the best year of my life.” But Weiner was also careful not to rule out a rumor that he is considering running for office; earlier this week it was reported that he is considering running for New York City mayor or public advocate. “I can’t say absolutely that I will never run for public office, but I’m very happy in my present life,” Weiner told People.

Penn State to decide fate of Paterno statue

A decision on whether to remove Penn State University’s statue of its late head football coach Joe Paterno will be made in seven to 10 days, a school spokesman said yesterday, amid calls for it to be taken down in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. The university’s board of trustees will decide in that time whether the statue will be taken from Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa., where Penn State plays its football games, spokesman David La Torre said in an e-mail. Critics have increased calls for the 7-foot statue to be removed following the release last Thursday of a report that criticized Paterno for his role in protecting Sandusky, a former assistant coach who was convicted of sexually abusing ten boys over 15 years. The report by former FBI chief Louis Freeh said Paterno and other high-ranking Penn State officials covered up Sandusky’s abuse for years while demonstrating a callous disregard for the victims. Paterno was fired by Penn State’s board in November, days after Sandusky was arrested for the abuse, and died in January of lung cancer at age 85. A small plane flew a banner around Penn State’s campus on Tuesday that read, “Take the statue down or we will.” REUTERS

WWII shipwreck yields $38 million of silver EMMANUEL DUNAND/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

The company retrieved 1,203 silver bars, or about 1.4 million ounces of the metal, from the SS Gairsoppa, a 412foot British cargo ship that sank after being torpedoed by German U-boat in February 1941, Tampa, Fla.-based Odyssey said today in a statement. unny man Andrew Schulz has strong opinions on most things — not the least of which includes women and dating. Since he’s a talking head on the second season of MTV2’s comedy series “Guy Code,” we picked Mr. Schulz’s brain for a few insights on the male mind. On a first date, what’s a deal-breaker for you?
I wouldn’t say there’s no room for any antics on a first date — the weirder, the better, because the first date is so weird in general that if somebody does something that creates any stimulus that breaks you out of that, “So, uh, did you study abroad? Oh, tell me about that. Oh, what are your dreams?” Anything weird! Just do something weird — I don’t care, fart. You can fart. And I’ll be like, “OK, why did you think it was OK to do that in front of me?” You know, create some conversation. At the end of the date, a guy walks the girl to the train, makes sure she gets home OK —
Wait, hold on, hold on, hold on. If you really wanted to make

I’ll be really honest with you. We don’t even know that we like you until after we sleep with you. And why is that?
Because it’s not even on our radar if we like you. We’re so clouded by the idea of sleeping with you that we can’t even focus on these qualities of you that we think we like. “Oh, I really like how she wears red. I re-
which is why they were on the show. To jump on the grenade bandwagon is totally understandable. From a girl’s perspective, I go, “That makes sense. Red looks awful on you. Why would I even think that I like that?” We have no clue until after. Initially, it’s our goal to sleep with you, and it’s your goal to sleep with us again. That’s your hustle, right? Our anxiety is, “Man, I don’t want to f— this up,” and your anxiety is, “I don’t want to sleep with him and f— this up.” HEIDI PATALANO

Re: Zimmerman denied fair hearing? Zimmerman’s character is very much a part of this case and his defense. He is basically saying he is a good guy who is part of the neighborhood watch who was caught in up a struggle for his own life so he felt he had no choice but to shoot Trayvon Martin. The molestation charges are relevant as they demonstrate behavior and possible motives for an armed Zimmerman to continue to pursue a minor when told not to by 911 officials and every single shred of common sense. This will and should affect Zimmerman’s trial since this goes to Zimmerman’s state of mind, character and possible motives. Saying those should be ignored is like saying one’s arrest record for violence should not be brought up in
I disagree that the interview with the alleged victim of sexual abuse has nothing to do with his charges. It has everything to do with his credibility, therefore anything that involves Zimmerman’s statement of truth to be evaluated with a fine-toothed comb. Funny how the judicial system is to be forgiving of “matter less” evidence when murder has taken the life of not just a family but a society in whole. SABRINA BROOKS, VIA E-MAIL
Abuse victims act out in other ways RE: “SANDUSKY: PARENTS SHOULD HAVE KNOWN” I under-
stand why Ms. Verponi could-
n’t comprehend why children abused by Sandusky or others don’t disclose. As a child sexual abuse survivor, I hope I can help. Often, children, like myself, are warned that if we tell they will hurt or kill us. Further, abusers often blame the youngsters. Because the abuse is so personal, and because sexual matters are surrounded by shame, it is very hard to disclose. Not everyone has understanding parents or other adults to tell. I never thought to tell the police. I always found them scary, and at the time, they were almost all men. In general, children do tell — but not often in words. We tell by acting out our pain, in addiction, depression, poor grades, etc., until we get the needed help.

But Knicks owner James Dolan and Jeremy Lin really blew it. Now it’s a lose-lose situation, when it easily could have been otherwise. Both will suffer personally and financially. Dolan won’t have his shining star to enrich and light up the franchise, and Lin won’t have the big city endorsements and love of an adoring fan base. What a tragedy! Both James Dolan and Jeremy Lin are traitors to the cause. Life shouldn’t be like this.

New York’s best new brunches REBECCA FINKEL/METRO
The Bedford’s Monte Cristo comes with housemade pickles and an optional fried egg.
The Bedford 110 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn Weekends, 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. On a still-uncluttered block of Bedford Ave. just south of McCarren Park, The Bedford is serving our new favorite Billyburg brunch. Chef Jason Giordano is an experienced private chef, which may be why his dishes feel like they were whipped up by dear (and unusually culinarily adept) friends the morning after you woke up in their home after an
evening of uncivilized catching up — they even start serving coffee at 8 a.m., for early risers. His breakfasts aren’t the huge, day-busting mounds of protein and starch that you’ve come to expect. Even the Monte Cristo, which comes with housemade pickles, is a manageable size (though best approached with knife and fork). You can add to your brunch a $5 seasonal fruit bellini, mimosa or the excellent Lovely Day cocktail: not-toosweet thyme lemonade spiked with vodka and prosecco.
Gran Electrica 5 Front St., Brooklyn Weekends, noon-3 p.m. At the feet of the Brooklyn Bridge, past the hordes of suffering tourists waiting in line for Grimaldi’s, is a shady backyard filled with chili-rimmed margaritas and Mexican cokes. Gran Electrica, DUMBO’s neighborhood handcrafted taco spot, is gradually adding to its brunch menu, which as now includes cactus-and-egg tacos and blue corn huevos rancheros in addition to a full lineup of tacos. During hot weather, the mariscos are especially nice. Try the Aguachile: ceviche-style scallops marinated in a puree of jalapenos, herbs and cucumber. Be sure to start with a spicy cocktail, like the Margarita de Toronja Picante, which mixes housemade habanero-infused tequila and jalapeno syrup with fresh citrus juices. The Bloody

Maria is sweetly smoky and served with a cuke spear. The highlight of the menu is the four salsas that come with the tacos: sparklingly fresh preparations of classic salsas roja and verde, a fiery chili arbol and a smooth, roasted sesame pipian. After you’re done, head to Brooklyn Bridge Park to stroll off your margarita buzz.
Ardesia has made great strides in the breakfast salad, as well as the breakfast cocktail.

Not only do most of our formerly tough neighborhoods have cozy wine bars, but some of these wine bars serve an excellent quiche. Ardesia in Hell’s Kitchen has rolled out a new brunch menu that incorporates some of the five boroughs’ best local fare, including pastries from Brooklyn’s Bien Cuit Bakery. They also cook up hot
breakfasts and a warm-cool spinach salad topped with fried artichoke hearts and a perfectly poached egg. After falling in love with the neighborhood, owner Mandy Oser aimed to create “a place where wine is completely unintimidating.” In addition to the daily wine selection written on a giant slate wall, Ardesia serves five wine-based brunch cocktails, including the Lillet Fizz: a cool, dry eye-opener made with Lillet Blanc, prosecco and grapefruit bitters. Tips for the tequila novice Tequila gets deeper and more sophisticated with age Agave afficionado Serena Fill gets us ready for National Tequila Day
J
uly 24 is National Tequila Day, which has us at Metro thinking about how little we know (or, more aptly, remember) about this spirit. We asked Serena Fill, Tequila Librarian at La Biblioteca de Tequila, to take us through some of the basics.
What exactly is tequila? “Blue agave is the basis for all tequila. There are two categories in the tequila family: [100 percent blue agave] or a mixto, which is what Cuervo Gold is, for example, which is going to be a minimum of 51 percent agave and the rest will come from something else — usually sugarcane, color and flavor. It has to be at least double-distilled, and it must come from one of five regions in Mexico. Jalisco is where most tequila comes from.”
What are the different types of tequila? “You’ve got blanco, reposado and anejo, and in 2006 they introduced a category called ‘extra anejo.’ That’s anything aged over three years. “Blanco is either going to be unaged — going straight from distillation to the bottle, or it can rest in stainless steel tanks for fewer than two months. It
Quoted
“For the anejo, the most that you’d want to adulterate it is by warming a brandy snifter and putting some Grand Marnier in there. It actually drinks like a cognac.” FILL
Q&A How can we avoid that headache? Tequila Semental is made from 100 percent blue agave — so there are no additives, which can add to the hurt. Plus, it’s triple-distilled. “One of the things that sets it apart from the other tequilas is the distillation process,” Fill says. “The master distiller lowers the methanol content to the lowest in the whole tequila industry. Methanol is a byproduct; it’s in all tequila. It’s what gives you the headache portion of your hangover.”
can actually also rest in barrels or wooden vats for less than two months, in which case they term it a ‘suave,’ meaning ‘soft.’ “Reposado means ‘rested,’ and that’s going to be aged from two months to just under a year in oak barrels, but they can also use 20,000 gallon vats — that’s where a lot of the variants come in, too. That’s why tequila has so many expressions. “Anejo [which means “aged”], is going to be one to three years, and that is only aged in barrels. Extra anejo is anything aged over three years, and that’s a new category.”
What are the best ways to enjoy each type of tequila? For mixed drinks, like margaritas, blanco is best. You don’t want to cover up the nuances of the aged tequila, unless you have a very talented bartender who can create a drink that brings out the nuances of the older, darker tequilas. Anejo is best served neat, perhaps with some water or ice to open up the flavors. “For the anejo,” Fill says, “the most that you’d want to adulterate it is by warming a brandy snifter and putting some Grand Marnier in there. It actually drinks like a cognac.” METRO

we just plunked it down in the middle of the desert in Arizona. It was hilarious. The producers did such a great job of really transforming this place but still keeping the exact same show. What impressed you when evaluating the contestants?
It’s the same criteria: taste, creativity and presentation. I
do care about people, but it’s not about their story or anything else; it’s about what’s on my plate and what I’m eating. Are you yourself a big griller?
I love grilling. It’s very funny because I ended up buying the grill and the smoker that they used [on the show]. I have them at my house on Long Island. I’m basically smoking everything this summer. I’m talking about food. [Laughs] What’s the most unique food you’ve smoked so far?
I made a smoked shallot vinaigrette the other day. I had smoked these racks of pork, and so the smoker was still going, and I wanted to make a smoked shallot vinaigrette the next day, so I put my shallots in there took them out after
about two hours, put them in the fridge and the next day I made a vinaigrette with them. Now that I’m talking about this, I want to smoke some scallops this weekend. What’s more pressure for you, cooking at your restaurants or judging cooking on TV?
If I do something it’s for fun, and it’s always fun. Cooks are like junkies, we’re just junkies for adrenaline. I had like 20 people over to my house the other day, and all of a sudden it came time to put everything together, and I’m running around like an idiot and somebody was like, “Jesus, this doesn’t really look relaxing.” I’m like, “This is fun, this is what I do — here, hold that.” [Laughs] MEREDITH ENGEL

Kuroda dominates Jays in rain-shortened shutout Improves to 6-1 in his last 10 starts Confidence growing in important free agent signee JIM MCISAAC/GETTY IMAGES
In three months, Hiroki Kuroda has pitched 122 innings for the Yankees. His most important innings will be in the postseason but in the sampling he has provided, the Yankees’ confidence has to be building. Kuroda scattered four hits in seven scoreless innings Wednesday afternoon and the Yankees continued rolling with a 6-0 victory over the Blue Jays that was called after seven innings. He had a relatively stressfree afternoon against Toronto’s lineup and improved to 6-1 over his last 10 starts, which has coincided with a more aggressive approach. “Earlier in the season, I was trying to be perfect, Kuroda said through an interpreter. “I was allowing my pitches to be on the corners. Mentally, I think I was getting more aggressive after May. That stretch began May 27 with eight scoreless innings in Oakland when he allowed just
Lin: ‘Honestly, I preferred New York’ The Garden was typically silent in the wake of Jeremy Lin’s exit to Houston, but the point guard himself was not. Lin spoke to Pablo S. Torre of Sports Illustrated yesterday and said the Knicks didn’t exactly get teary-eyed over his departure. General manager
Kuroda had ďŹ ve strikeouts and no walks in a performance Joe Girardi called “brilliant.â€?
four hits. He took a 4.56 ERA into that game, but lowered it to 3.46 yesterday after rebounding from a pair of no-decisions against the Red Sox and Angels.
“He was brilliant today, manager Joe Girardi said. “I think it was important because guys don’t want to have two outings where they don’t pitch
how they’re capable of. They want to turn it around right away. It also marked the fifth time this season that Kuroda pitched seven scoreless innings, which is the most by any AL pitcher. He was credited with his third career complete game after umpires decided to call it due to the continued threat of rain. “I thought his split was really today, one of the better splits that he had today, Girardi said. “I thought he located his fastball extremely well, in and out to right-handed hitters and he got away from the first guy getting on which has plagued him the last couple of starts. “The starting pitching has been good for us all season, Mark Teixeira said. “When we win a lot of games in a row or go on a nice roll, it’s about starting pitching. LARRY FLEISHER sports@metro.us
in the third year of Lin’s contract. Lin was unusually candid, admitting outright he wanted to stay in New York, but that he was looking forward to his new start. “Honestly, I preferred New York, Lin told Torre. “But my main goal in free agency was to go to a team that had plans for me and wanted me. I wanted to have fun playing basketball. ... Now I’m definitely relieved. METRO

Big Papi hits DL The mounting list of obstacles to a Red Sox comeback now includes a DL stint for David Ortiz. Boston’s designated hitter was put on the 15-day DL with a strained right Achilles tendon. Manager Bobby Valentine said he would need seven to 10 days’ rest. Ortiz, an All-Star, was having a monster year for the Sox. He is hitting .316 with 23 home runs, 65 runs scored and 58 runs batted in. All three lead the team.

For the first time all year, Andruw Jones started a day game after a night game in the outfield yesterday. “If my legs are feeling healthy, then yeah, I would rather [play the outfield], Jones said. “I can help Curtis [Granderson], position himself out there and I feel more in the game, but I really don’t mind the DH. What wasn’t new was his current, extended hot streak. He was 1-for-3 with an RBI yesterday and has five homers since June 22. “It feels good, Jones said Tuesday. “Since we’ve played in Boston, I’ve been feeling pretty comfortable at the plate. METRO/LF

Glen Grunwald called Lin about an hour before the midnight deadline to tell him they wouldn’t match Houston’s offer. “We wanted to keep you, but it couldn’t work out, Lin quoted Grunwald as saying. “Tell your family I say hello, and good luck the rest of the way. The reference to the situation not working out is apparently related the luxury tax hit the Knicks would’ve taken
