Mayor doesn’t mince words to Chick-fil-A Menino pens scathing letter to head of chicken chain Anti-gay marriage, Hub search spark anger Mayor Thomas Menino is putting the chicken where his anger is. Menino, after recently making comments to the Herald about his not wanting Atlantabased Chick-fil-A in Boston, penned a letter to the chicken chain’s president expressing his anger with the company. “In recent days you said Chick-fil-A opposes same-sex marriage and said the generation that supports it has an ‘arrogant attitude,’” Menino wrote in the letter dated July 20. “Now — incredibly — your company says you are backing out of the samesex marriage debate. I urge you to back out of your plans to locate in Boston.” Menino goes on and writes that the city is “full of pride for our support of same sex marriage” and that he was “angry” to learn of the chain’s attempt to come to Boston after President Dan Cathy’s comments. Cathy came under fire recently when he made comments to the Baptist Press that the company believes in “the biblical definition of a family unit.” The company’s stance on same-sex marriage led to it being uninvited from opening in Northeastern University’s student center earlier this year after students voted against allowing it there. Fallout from those comments reached beyond Boston when the Jim Hensen Company, famous for its Muppet characters, ended its partnership with the chain. The chain has also been criti-

Boston’s love of bikes keeps on climbing With Hubway poised to turn 1 year old on Saturday, officials announced this week that the bike share will pump up its fleet to 1,000 bikes by August. That means a lot more bikes on the roads; so can the city handle the surge? “No doubt about it,” said Kristopher Carter, interim director of Boston Bicycle. “I think the mayor has done a lot of work over the last few years to prepare the city. We are nowhere near capacity.” To accommodate the increase, Hubway will also add 30 new stations in Cambridge, Brookline and Somerville, additions that Carter said bikers have clamored for. “It is important that we’re providing connections across

the river into other towns — this is public transit,” he said. With a party Tuesday celebrating Hubway’s first birthday, and a summer-long exhibit showcasing the impact of biking on urban areas like Boston, it’s easy to see that Bostonians love their bikes. Some, however, question whether the city’s roads can accommodate more cyclists. The city has added 50 miles of bike lanes in past four years, Carter said, and there are plans to add between 15 and 20 more miles of path this year. For some, it’s still not enough: “It takes me 1.25 hours to drive 17 miles to work...boston needs more bikes and bike paths,”@johngf tweeted yesterday. METRO/MR

Memory Pill Does for the Brain What Prescription Glasses Do for the Eyes, Claims US Surgeon General Candidate Remarkable changes observed, helps restore up to 15 years of lost memory power in as little as 30 days! SPOKANE, WASHINGTON – Help is on the way for those who routinely lose their car keys, forget to call people back, or misplace their TV remote control. Just like a good pair of glasses can make blurry vision, sharp and crystal-clear, there’s a new, doctorrecommended memory pill that can do the same thing for your brain, sharpening your memory and mental powers, and making that slow-thinking, sluggish brain as sharp as a tack. In controlled research studies, the prescription-free formula, known as Procera AVH® has been shown to increase memory, mood, and mental clarity, but it does much more than that.

scientists observed the formula “biochemically coaxing” aging brains to function more youthfully, helping restore the speed, memory abilities and mental powers enjoyed as far back as 15 birthdays ago.

Younger Brain in 30 Days? If the results of this randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study, published in JANA, a leading scientific journal, are to be believed, it is entirely possible that you can get your new, younger-functioning brain in as little as 30 days. Accused killer no easy fit for mass murderer profile

POOL PHOTO BY RJ SANGOSTI/THE DENVER POST

Unless James Holmes chooses to say why he went on the lethal shooting spree he is accused of, the analyses offered by forensic psychiatrists, based on their study of mass murders, may be as close as we get. From what is known of the attack and his life so far, experts say Holmes was probably not suffering from as serious a mental illness as Jared Loughner, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia after killing six people in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011. “People want to believe that someone who does something like this must be floridly psychotic,” said Louis Schlesinger, professor of forensic psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, who has studied mass killers since the

1970s. “They think, ‘Ah, he’s mentally ill; now I understand.’ It makes people feel they and people they know would never behave this way.” The scarier prospect is that Holmes’s psychological illness was more common, less severe and not easily detectable. As forensic psychiatry experts try to figure out from afar what is wrong with Holmes, they are focusing on three details of the shooting: The targets were strangers to the killer, not colleagues or acquaintances; the shooter did not commit suicide or invite his own death at the hands of police; and Holmes warned authorities about his booby-trapped apartment before the explosives killed anyone.

NEW YORK. Based on mass murderers he has studied, criminologist James Alan Fox says: “[There’s] a consistent profile in which someone has a history of frustration and failure despite promise and aptitude. But they also have a very weak support system: They don't

Warning signs hard to detect

Holmes’s mental state is that he clearly intended to survive the massacre, wearing body armor during the attack and then surrendering to authorities. In contrast, say experts, most of the mass killers they call “pseudocommandos” — those who kill in public, plan meticulously and are armed to the teeth — expect to die in their rampage, noted Dr. James Knoll,

a forensic psychiatrist at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, in a 2010 study. Virginia Tech’s Seung-Hui Cho killed himself, as did the two teenagers who fatally shot 13 people at Colorado’s Columbine High School in April 1999. “That [Holmes] didn’t is an indication that he was different in psychological terms than the others we’ve studied,” said Levin. Apple stock drops on missed estimates after iPhone lull

Slowing growth Apple said sales in the quarter ending in September would fall to about $34 billion and that profit would fall to $7.65 a share. That compares with predictions by analysts for sales of $38 billion and profit of $10.27 a share.

Apple Inc. fell after reporting iPhone sales that missed analysts’ projections, underscoring the computer maker’s reliance on demand for the smartphone. The company sold 26 million iPhones in the fiscal third quarter, shy of the 28.4 million predicted by analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. That caused Apple to miss analysts’ quarterly sales and profit estimates for the second time since 2003. Customers delayed purchases of existing iPhone versions while awaiting the next model. The British model seemed to learn about the affair along with everyone else yesterday, and proceeded to have a mini Twitter meltdown. Before deactivating her account, she followed @UsWeekly and tweeted quotes from Marilyn Monroe and Maya Angelou, then signed off with a simple “Wow” — the 2012 equivalent of waking up to the “Love Actually” DVD menu in a puddle of Ben & Jerry’s.

according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet initially filed the lawsuit, while co-star Ed O’Neill added his name as a plaintiff as a show of solidarity. The actors have rejected an offer of $150,000 per episode for Season 4, with increases each year leading to $325,000 should the show reach Season 9. They’re reportedly looking for double that.

We always blamed Kristen Stewart’s ever-present red carpet pout on being camera-shy. Maybe a weird rash. Possibly a Spanx situation. But we never suspected that the problem was Robert Pattinson, her much more photogenic boyfriend and “Twilight” co-star. It seems, however, that while Stewart’s been parading around Hollywood with Pattinson, she’s also been having a fling with Rupert Sanders, her married “Snow White and the Huntsman” director. Us Weekly has incriminating photographs of the two snuggled up in Los Angeles on July 17, just a few days before Stewart and Pattinson attended the Teen Choice Awards together. Witnesses tell RadarOnline that Sanders, 41, and Stewart, 22, “were hardly able to keep their hands off one another” as they drove around L.A., stopping occasionally to make out in parking lots. Kristen, what do you have to say for yourself ? “I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected,” she said in a statement released

Well, this is awkward.

Pattinson talks cheating Robert Pattinson obviously won’t be releasing a statement — he’ll let some pretty young blonde do the talking next week. So for now, all we’ve got is his April chat in Vanity Fair, where he conveniently discussed affairs. “There’s a thing I’ve never got: That is, why do people cheat? I can understand the impulse,” he said. “But not how you can keep two relationships going at the same time for long. I’m not the casual-affair kind of guy. If I choose to be with someone, it’s because I really want it. When I have a relationship, I’m 100 percent into it.”

Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger have been dating happily for six years, but their relationship got off to a bumpy start, the “Fringe” star tells Us Weekly. “Our first date was a miserable one. I took her to an Italian restaurant, and there was some flower that was blooming. She was allergic to it so she sniffled and sneezed the entire time,” Jackson remembers. “And when I get nervous, you might have noticed I talk a lot. So I just chewed her ear off for an hour and a half. It was amazing. I’m surprised she ever called back.”

Checking in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer. @katyperry I always love seeing one single piece of confetti fall at an indie show. @JimCarrey The violence within us is being fully exploited by the gun sellers in America.Let’s end r addiction and entitlement to violence. @Pink As far as I’m concernedChristmas prep has started. Community actor-vists As photos emerged online Tuesday of Christian Bale visiting with victims of last week’s mass shooting at a Colorado screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” we felt compelled to honor others in his profession who give back to their communities. 1. Mark Wahlberg is making headlines for his hilarious performance in “Ted,” but the actor is also known for his annual golf tournament, which raises money for at-risk inner-city kids. 2. Not only a hero on the big screen, “The Amazing SpiderMan” himself, Andrew Garfield, is an ambassador for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. 3. Charlie Sheen has pledged to

When is it time to face your past? “Mirror Mirror” star Lily Collins was seen recently in pictures with Jamie Campbell Bower, taken while filming a movie together in Canada. That’s a change. We’re used to seeing Lily in photos with Zac Efron. But rumor has it that Lily and Zac have now split. Celebrities get together and break up in front of the camera all the time. But these days you don’t have to be a star to see your new love interest with an ex. With all the social media that comes into play today, it might be too easy to witness the relationship that came before yours. So what does this mean for your romantic future? And when, if ever, is it OK to talk about it? In the old days, break-ups were much cleaner. Sure, there might be some old photos of an ex stuck in a box somewhere, but you would have to really snoop to find those. Now all you have to do is go to your new

boyfriend or girlfriend’s Facebook page. First, if you are the one leaving those old photos up, it’s time to take them down. You don’t have to destroy them. Maybe you can just move them to a private file on your computer. If, however, you are the one left to see your new flame with his or her old one, the first thing I’d suggest is to talk about it. There is a chance your partner isn’t aware the photos are up. If he or she leaves them there intentionally, don’t become angry or try to force their removal. Instead, keep those pics in mind. Know that they’re an indication that your new lover hasn’t made a clean break. As your partner asks you to go further into a relationship, remember those images and hold back a little in an effort to protect yourself. Until he or she hits that delete button, the person won’t be ready to fully move forward. Celebrities like Lily and Jamie might not have control over the photos that end up in the magazines, but everyone has control over their Facebook pages. — Relationship expert Dr. Jane Greer is creator of “Shrink Wrap” – national commentary on what we can learn from celebrity relationships – and host of “Let’s Talk Sex” at Healthylife.net. Her book, “What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship,” is available now.

Author David Perrett takes a deeper look at beauty and attraction Says personality and upbringing can influence what’s attractive

In your face 1. Whites of our eyes “Our highly mobile eyes are put to good use in social signaling. It’s astonishing how much can be conveyed by a simple flick of the eyes.” Angelina’s leftward gaze is intriguing and complex. 2. Eyebrows “The signals we give out using our eyes are emphasized by eyebrows.” 3. Exceptions to averageness “If there are faces that are naturally better than aver-

age, they must have something extra, and it should be possible to find out what that something is.” (We can easily identify what part of Angelina’s face makes her exceptionally beautiful.) 4. Femininity Angelia’s high cheekbones help make her face strikingly feminine. 5. Healthy skin “Face scans reveal that people with more red in their face look healthier than people who have less red in their face.” Angelina’s face texture and color make her look radiant and healthy.

t’s simple to tell if a person is attractive, but what is it that makes someone so? Pointing out the traits that characterize beauty proves difficult, but David Perrett uses psychological studies and computergenerated faces to uncover the science of attraction in his book, “In Your Face.” “In the book I mentioned health, symmetry, sex typicality and youth,” Perrett says. “But I do spend most chapters showing how despite these universals, beauty is still very much in the eye of the beholder because of our unique upbringing, our unique friends, our unique experiences in love and so on. And each of these builds in our minds a unique sense of what’s attractive in faces.”

We’ve all marveled at the couple that could be siblings and gotten the heebie jeebies when Freudian theories emerge. Perrett’s book explains why we’re attracted to individuals who resemble our parents and pinpoints the traits that make or break beauty. He says that though we cannot change the face we’re born with, that face can make us who we are. “I think people’s future behavior is being shaped by their face,” Perrett says. “I’m a great believer in the feedback between the face and how the world treats us and therefore the creation of our own personality.” JOANIE FERGUSON letters@metro.us

“We didn’t sit down and say, ‘Let’s find some shows with babies and animals everywhere,’ but we did buy into visions from creators that we felt were funny, specific, emotional and original, said Jennifer Salke, NBC president of entertainment. Salke said NBC “wanted forev-

er to line up a series like “Animal Practice that prominently featured furry friends in the storyline. Yet at the same time, she added, “you don’t need big hijinks to make a broad comedy work. NBC may be onto something: Later in the day, during a party held for critics, the most popular, most photographed celebrity of the evening was Crystal — the capuchin monkey star of “Animal Practice.

Can a monkey save NBC? The network that routinely finishes last in ratings among the big four broadcast companies is in a state of transition, most obviously seen in its approach to comedy this fall. Where NBC has been a haven for critically loved, cult-hit sitcoms that don’t draw massive amounts of viewers, the network is now introducing comedies starring a lab-coat wearing monkey (“Animal Practiceâ€?) and babies raised by clueless, yet caring, dads (“Guys with Kidsâ€?). “We’re going to transition with our comedy programming and ‌ try to broaden the audience and broaden what the network does,â€? Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, told journalists gathered at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Wednesday. “Those Thursday comedies, which the critics love and we love, tend to be a bit more narrow than we’d ultimately like as we go forward.â€? Greenblatt was referring to shows like “Parks and Recreation,â€? “30 Rockâ€? and, more specifically, “Community,â€? which featured an entire episode that played out in

the style of an 8-bit video game last season. Though all three were renewed for next season, as of late “Communityâ€? has received little love from NBC, which fired the show’s creator, ordered only 13 episodes and pushed the show back to Fridays. “The reason that we did 13 episodes of that and a couple of our other shows is because we really wanted to get more comedies on the schedule ‌ which isn’t to say we couldn’t decide at some point to extend those seasons,â€? Greenblatt said. “I would love nothing more than ‘Community’ to have a following on Friday and to be able to continue it.â€? AMBER RAY

t used to be that when a restaurant opened it would have a grace period to find its groove and traditional reviewers would wait until things had settled to render a verdict. Now that we’re all reviewers, firing off images of dishes to Instagram and chiming in on the glut of industry blogs, that’s no longer the case. Complicating things for the Tip

Tap Room, which opened last month, is that the establishment has been so busy from the jump that it’s had to work out its issues on the fly. Nobody even had time to put together a cocktail list. I might quibble with that oversight, but when the beer (36 taps, 100 total) and whiskey list is so extensive, who wants a cocktail anyway? There are reasons for the rush at this, the second reclamation project from chef Brian Poe, who previously turned the Rattlesnake from a bro-y slop hole into a surprisingly decent place to eat. For starters, the Beacon Hill/Government Center neighborhood is a wasteland of quality, so neighbors

are starved for something new. “I do enjoy all the neighbors as far as the restaurants are concerned,” Poe says. “But I think there’s a need for, not high-end, but ... good food. That’s what we’re trying to do.” Poe is, in fact, doing interesting things with dishes that might get lesser attention elsewhere, like a potato, bacon and fried oyster appetizer finished with beer cheese sauce and pickled serrano pico, to name one beer-soaking bar snack. It’s the type of food, largely focused on “tips” of swordfish, steak, chicken, lamb and specials like an ostrich dish, that’s priced for a young, drinkingminding crowd.

What does it all mean? Who cares? Inside Tip Tap, the open space is bright (a little too much) and boisterous (ditto), with large garage doors that open onto the busy Cambridge street. The good news is, the young crowd is availing themselves of the wide selection of quality brews, like the super bitter Green Flash IPA or the malty Belgium-brewed Scotch Silly ale. are well-represented as well. I tried a Breaking and Entering bourbon from California’s St. George Spirits, which starts out hot, but mellows into a warm caramel, and Rhode Island’s Uprising Whiskey, distilled by a friend of Poe’s, that almost drinks like a spicy tequila. Adam Cohen talks high fashion, low morale and renewed vigor Singer has learned to change his attitude and luck by approaching his career ‘Like a Man’ Adam Cohen is a snappy dresser. The singer/songwriter (and son of Leonard Cohen) just finished a photo shoot for Elle Canada and recently did one for another fashion-oriented magazine, Dressed to Kill, which is based in his hometown of Montreal. “I enjoy fine clothes, I have to admit,” he says. So he’s not a jeans and Tshirt guy? “I can be,” he says, “but I definitely gravitate to fine things: fine meals and clothing, fine shapes and sounds.” Cohen’s love of finery seems a last vestige of vanity as he admits that his new record, “Like a Man,” is the result of a chas-

Patriots’ journey begins Coming off Super Bowl loss, many picking Pats to return to big game Is this 2012 version worth the hype? All eyes will be on Lloyd, stud rookies throughout training camp DILIP VISHWANAT/GETTY IMAGES

August is right around the corner, which means it’s finally time to take that pigskin back out. The Patriots will officially do that today at Gillette when training camp starts, and there are more than a few storylines to watch:

1

THE LLOYD FACTOR

Last year the Pats shocked the NFL world by trading for both Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco. A year later, it’s safe to say both of those trades were epic fails. Don’t expect any major swaps this time around, as the Pats seem pretty set across the board. But there was a major acquisition at wide receiver for New England as it brought in Brandon Lloyd. Ochocinco had a tough time holding on to the ball early last offseason, and it

was a sign of things to come. A lot of eyes will be on Lloyd in the next few weeks, as the Pats desperately hope he’s the outside threat they’re missing.

through a sprained ankle in the Super Bowl and had offseason surgery.

2

We know what Tom Brady can do. We know what Jerod Mayo can do. What we don’t know is how the rookies, specifically the pair of firstround picks in Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower, will fare in their first pro training camp. Jones, a defensive end, and Hightower, a linebacker, are both extremely versatile players. Jones is already regarded in some circles as the steal of the draft, and head coach Bill Belichick has gone on record in comparing Hightower to Mayo and Mike Vrabel.

Logan Mankins (knee), Brandon Spikes (knee) and Sebastian Vollmer (back) will all start camp on the Active/PUP list, according to ESPNBoston.com. Those three players all had offseason surgery and it’s unclear when they’ll be fully recovered. Mankins is the biggest question mark, as he played with a torn ACL in the Super Bowl. All three players are extremely important to the Pats’ success, and their health will be monitored closely. Noticeably absent from the list is Rob Gronkowski, who hobbled GETTY IMAGES

Pats release veteran back Joseph Addai One day before the Patriots opened up training camp they dispensed with any drama about whether Joseph Addai would be a contributor to the team. The veteran running back was cut, reportedly after failing a physical. Addai, drafted in the first round by longtime Patriots rival Indianapolis in 2006, was signed in May and was expected to provide leadership to a mostly nameless group in the team’s backfield. But injuries are nothing new for Addai, who has played in just 20 games over the past two seasons with hamstring injuries. He was held out of one organ-

The Patriots hope Brandon Lloyd doesn’t go the way of the brash receiver they signed last offseason.

QB BUCKET AS DEEP AS EVER

GETTY IMAGES

The NFL is now a full-fledged, two-hand-touch passing league, leading to jaw-dropping statistics through the air. Last year, 12 quarterbacks averaged at least 250 passing yards per game. Four of those guys threw at least 39 touchdown passes. So we have to get a quarterback early in our fantasy draft this year, right? Wrong.

Beanie dump Beanie Wells doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to injuries. So now that he’s starting camp on the active/PUP list, there’s reason for concern. He previously claimed he just had a minor knee scope six months ago.

Position scarcity The concept of value-based drafting sounds complicated, but it’s not. Since most leagues start just one quarterback, we only have to examine the projected difference between 10 to 12 quarterbacks. For example, Aaron

Who to target? OK, so you’re sold on waiting to take your QB. The key to this strategy is finding someone to take later who can help. Matt Ryan has a new offensive coordinator, a dominant wideout duo and a declining running game. Cutler and Brandon Marshall are reunited. Robert Griffin III brings world-class speed to the position. The Steelers will be relying heavily on Ben Roethlisberger’s arm with Rashard Mendenhall (knee) sidelined. All are solid targets.
