20 years for girlfriend’s Queens murder A Queens man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for stabbing his girlfriend to death. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said yesterday that Tigran Tambiev, 46, will spend two decades behind bars. Prosecutors say he repeatedly stabbed his girlfriend, Susan Woolf, 49, in the back and chest during a 2009 domestic dispute. Her body was found the next day in their Long Island City apartment.

Councilman wants blow guns banned BRONX. After Metro wrote

about how dangerous blow guns are being used to hunt birds and squirrels in city parks, and that the guns are sold in local bodegas and corner stores in the Bronx, Councilman James Vacca is now introducing legislation to ban the sale of blow guns in New York City. The blow guns, which are sold at stores near Pelham Bay Park, are considered toys. They are not usually considered dangerous to humans, Vacca said, but they are lethal to animals and are illegal for hunting. “They serve no productive purpose, especially when they are used illegally and unacceptably to kill and maim animals,” said Vacca. Father denies son’s part in bomb attempt DHAKA, BANGLADESH. The father of a Bangladeshi man accused of attempting to blow up the New York Federal Reserve Bank denied on Thursday that his son was involved and said he was the victim of a “racist conspiracy.” Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, was arrest-

ed on Wednesday and faces charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda. “This is nothing but a conspiracy,” his father Quazi Mohammad Ahsanullah told reporters in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

“The intelligence of the USA is playing with a mere boy whom we sent for higher study. The allegation against my son is not true at all. He could not even drive a car. How was he caught with a van?” he said. Nafis appeared in a Brooklyn court on Wednesday. The

criminal complaint against him said he had entered the United States in January and that he had said he was in contact with members of al Qaeda overseas. Nafis had been a business student in Bangladesh, before leaving to study computer science in the United States. REUTERS

Most New Yorkers happy, but still want a better apt. Biggest problems in the city are employment, safety and finding housing, Municipal Arts Society survey finds But most say they are happy to be in The Big Apple Many glad to have close transportation and green spaces GETTY IMAGES

Most New Yorkers say that the city is still an enviable place to live, but not everything is all that bright and shiny. A new report from the Municipal Art Society revealed Thursday that New Yorkers think safety and the cost of living are the two toughest things about living in The Big Apple. The survey was part of the Municipal Art Society Summit for New York City, which consisted of two days of panels and discussions brainstorming how to make the five boroughs more livable. An overwhelming majority of New Yorkers — 84 percent — said that life in New York is generally good. But about one in five expressed concern about employment and safety, along with what the survey calls “that perennial source of anxiety” — housing. Not surprisingly, people making more money were more content with life in the city: Respondents who made more than $75,000 found New York to be kinder. Also, people in Manhattan and Brooklyn were happier, according to the survey.

61%

New Yorkers were happy to have more green spaces, with 61 percent pleased overall and Manhattan and Staten Island residents feeling the luckiest with access to green space.

A satirical take on Atlantic Yards

Back when the Brooklyn Nets were just a gleam in Jay-Z’s eye, downtown Brooklyn was a battleground For some, Barclays Center controversy still very real COURTESY STEVE WITT

Author Steve Witt’s new book, at right, is available on Amazon.

Long before the Barclays Center even existed, and back when the Nets were still playing in New Jersey, there was a fight in downtown Brooklyn, between a developer with a vision of a sports arena and soaring buildings, and homeowners fighting to preserve their neighborhood. Barclays opened last month to great fanfare, and the Brooklyn Nets will take on the New York Knicks there on Nov. 1. But neighbors in the area complain about overcrowding and noise. Others are still waiting for the jobs and affordable housing that Atlantic Yards developer Bruce Ratner promised. No matter which side of the Atlantic Yards debate you’re on, Steve Witt’s new satire of the controversy is worth a read. Longtime Brooklyn journalist Witt covQ: What inspired you to write this novel? The initial inspiration came after Mikhail Prokhorov bought the Brooklyn Nets. At the time Bruce Ratner was going broke and the economy hit the skids. The irony that it took a Russian oligarch to save a $5 billion project in New York City, the center of American capitalism, sparked the idea for a fictional satire about modern American society.

ered the Atlantic Yards saga from its beginning, and it’s now the subject of his latest book, “The Street Singer.” Q: The novel’s protagonist, a subway musician, is pretty supportive of the Barclays Center. Do you agree with him? I’m supportive of the Barclays Center. Brooklyn, even with gentrification, remains heavily immigrant, and a third black, with many people struggling to live week to week. (But) the thought of Palestinian kids from Bay Ridge sitting next to Orthodox Jews from Borough Park next to kids from Brownsville in the nosebleed section of the arena to watch the Nets play makes me feel positive about the future. Q: What do you say to criticism that the Barclays Center took people’s homes away, via eminent domain, and that developer Ratner has yet to deliver on the jobs and affordable housing he promised? As a journalist, I seldom bought into the eminent domain argument concerning Atlantic Yards. The gentrified few nearly killed the project with their endless court battles with eminent domain being among their trump cards. But they themselves displaced poor people to get property around Atlantic Yards. As for the affordable housing and jobs, Ratner’s style is to build and not flip real estate, so I think it will get done.

Cops: 11 gun sellers nabbed BROOKLYN. Three separate undercover operations conducted by the Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes and the NYPD resulted in the seizure of 154 illegal firearms, officials said Thursday. Undercover officers spent the past two years buying illegal firearms from suspects throughout Brooklyn, police say. Eleven people were in-

dicted as part of the sting, as well. Illegal gun sales were made on Flatbush Avenue in East Flatbush, as well as in Crown Heights and Bushwick. Up to 14 of the weapons seized were reported stolen in several states, including South Carolina and one stolen from a Pennsylvania state trooper. METRO/CB

A press photographer tries to protect himself while police disperse protesters during the demonstration.

Greece: Violence at anti-austerity protests ATHENS. Greek police clashed

with anti-austerity protesters hurling stones and petrol bombs on the day of a general strike that brought much of the near-bankrupt country to a standstill. In the second major walkout in three weeks on Thursday, almost 40,000 protesters marched in Athens in a bid to show EU leaders meeting in Brussels that new wage and pension cuts will only worsen their plight after five years of recession.

Tensions mounted when a small group of protesters began throwing pieces of marble, bottles and petrol bombs at police barricading part of the square in front of parliament, prompting riot police to fire several rounds of tear gas to disperse them. REUTERS

After 79 years in print, Newsweek goes digital only NEW YORK. Newsweek, one of

the most internationally recognized magazine brands in the world, will cease publishing a print edition af-

ter nearly 80 years. The decision to go all-digital, disclosed in a blog post on its companion website The Daily Beast, is indicative of the shift to media consumption on digital devices such as tablets and mobile phones and underscores the problems faced by newsweeklies in an increasingly commoditized, 24-hour news cycle. The final print edition will hit newsstands on Dec. 31. REUTERS

Widow relishes victory in anti-gay marriage law

MILES DIXON/METRO

Wearing a diamond brooch her wife, Thea Spyer, gave to her when she proposed in 1967, Edith “Edie” Windsor told reporters she will continue to fight, even after a federal appeals court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act Thursday. This is the second ruling by a federal appellate court that deems DOMA unconstitutional for violating the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection. Experts predict the Supreme Court will soon take the issue. For Windsor, the ruling marked a victory in a legal battle three years in the making. When Spyer died in 2009, she left her assets, including the New York City apartment the couple shared, to Windsor. Though the couple were legally married in Canada in 2007, Windsor was forced to pay $363,000 in federal estate taxes, though the fee would have been exempt for a widow of a same-sex marriage.

Windsor said she “can’t wait till the next phase.”

Thursday’s ruling means Windsor will be repaid that money from the government. “I’m sure she is here with me in spirit and would have been so proud to see how far we’ve come,” Windsor said of her late wife. “Treating married New Yorkers like Edie and Thea like strangers under the eyes of the law is unfair, unjust, unconstitutional, disrespectful and

plain wrong,” NYCLU executive director Donna Lieberman said. “We celebrate today knowing we are one step closer to fulfilling the dream of real 100 percent relationship equality here in New York.” James Essex, director of the LGBT project at the ACLU said Windor’s case is one of four that ask the Supreme Court to rule on DOMA. election 2012

No place like home? Mass. senator: Romney might lose home state Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown’s worst nightmare is that his party’s nominee, Mitt Romney, will set a record for presidential candidates. Romney may lose his home state of 40 years, which he governed for four. Recent voter surveys show Romney trailing President Barack Obama in the state by 14 to 33 percentage points. To overcome the anticipated Obama tsunami in Massachusetts, Brown is counting on thousands of voters splitting their tickets to back him over his Democratic opponent, consumer advocate Elizabeth Warren, with whom he’s running neckand-neck in polls. Brown, who won the seat in a 2010 special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, needs every Obama voter he can get, including members of organized labor. BLOOMBERG

Sen. Scott Brown is worried.

Youth vote: Candidates still giving it the old college try With less than three weeks left before election day, the youth vote has once more come into focus. A student concerned about his future job prospects asked the first question at the Hofstra University presidential debate Tuesday night, and both candidates have set up extensive campus operations in swing states. In another clear bid for younger voters, President Barack Obama will appear this evening on Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show,” the sort of venue challenger Mitt Romney has avoided so far. Likely voters in this age group prefer Obama to Romney by 54 percent to 36 percent in Reuters/Ipsos polling from the week ending Oct. 14. The Romney campaign is working to mobilize students unhappy with the president’s record, with 188 chapters of a pro-Romney student group on campuses in 11 “target states,” according to a campaign aide. “I don’t think you’ll see the president enjoying the same amount of support that he had in 2008, very simply because the Obama economy has created a lost generation of young voters,” the aide said. The Obama campaign has gone a step further, bringing buses to some campus rallies that later take students to register or vote early. REUTERS

Women voters and the complex issues that surround them, such as supporting a family and getting equal pay, play a major role in this year’s elections.

“I understand the challenges women face and want to make it easier for them in the workplace.” ROMNEY POSTED ON TWITTER

Likely voters overall believe Democrats are better for young Americans than Republicans by a 44 percent to 29 percent margin. For likely voters between 18 and 29 years old, this gap is an overwhelming 53 percent to 19 percent.

Obama campaign names 26 schools the president visited between the end of March and the beginning of October, while Romney aides estimated that the former governor has visited “roughly 50” campuses.

ey, little lady, can I buy you a drink?” Oh no. She’d last seen him four years ago, promising every woman in the place wonderful things if only they’d help him one night in November. Now here he was, grinning on the stool to her left. “Hi, Mr. President. Haven’t seen you in a while.”

W

ell, I’ve been making a better world for you,” he said. “I passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. What did you think of that?” “It’s okay, I guess, if you plan to sue your employer. But I haven’t seen my pay change much. I’m unemployed.”

Anyway, look, I’ve also promoted health care reform, I’m standing up for reproductive rights …” Jessica sighed. “Yeah, but women are about more than BandAids and birth control. For example, did you make half your Cabinet women?” “Um, no. More like a third.” “Maybe you should have borrowed some of Romney’s binders.”

Romney takes to damage control Mitt Romney’s claim to have ordered up “binders full of women” to staff his Massachusetts cabinet has opened a fresh struggle with President Barack Obama for the backing of female voters, threatening to erode the Republican nominee’s gains with a crucial constituency. Romney’s comment at the second presidential debate sparked Internet ridicule, Democratic derision and days of damage control. On the campaign trail, the candidates courted women with differing messages. Romney said he could resolve their economic challenges, and Obama argued he is the one who values their concerns and contributions. BLOOMBERG

Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a roughly two-to-one margin among voters aged 18 to 29 in 2008. This time, likely voters in this age group prefer Obama to Romney by 54 percent to 36 percent.

Taxes and returns Think tank says Romney’s tax plan won’t work Mitt Romney’s proposed cap on itemizing tax deductions could not on its own raise enough new government tax revenue to compensate for revenues lost by the Republican presidential candidate’s plan to slash income tax rates, a think tank said on Wednesday. REUTERS

What’s wrong? The Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan group, said his deductions cap could raise up to $1.7 trillion over 10 years. The center said earlier this year Romney’s 20 percent tax rate cut would cost $4.8 trillion.

Romney disagrees Romney has argued that his plan will not cost $4.8 trillion. The Romney campaign had previously criticized the Tax Policy Center’s estimates, saying they did not account for economic growth that can pay for tax cuts and that the center excluded some tax breaks in their studies. The campaign has said the limit on itemized deductions would be only part of its plan to fund the rate cut. The Tax Policy Center admitted its latest estimates were based on an incomplete picture.

Chefs dish on their favorite fall ingredients Autumn brings out a host of new foods for the city’s eateries What the menu masters have put together for the chilly temps Chef Ben Pollinger, Oceana 120 W. 49th St., 212-759-5941 His pick: Pumpkin Why he’s cooking with it: “There are so many types of pumpkin and squash, each with a different flavor, texture and color. They can be showcased as an individual variety or as a blend for an overall great pumpkin flavor. They’re visually stunning too, from orange to brown to red, green and blue.” His inspiration: “I wanted to show off ways to serve pumpkin and celebrate this wonderful harbinger of autumn.” Use it at home: To make a puree (to be used in pies or stirred into pasta or risotto): 1. Cut pumpkin in half from top to bottom. 2. Season the inside with salt

rom carving into pumpkin flesh to quartering Cornish game hen, cutting into hearty foods is a revered autumn ritual. Likewise, we often figuratively cut into the heft of this fall fare by pairing it with wines rich in tannins, organic compounds that largely make up a fermented beverage’s body and dry flavor profile. In other words, sips that make us pucker. But what about cleansing our poultry-gorged palates? For this, you need acidity, too. That’s one of many reasons why Eve’s Cidery’s Autumn Stoscheck makes the case for popping open a crisp, sparkling cider. “It deserves a place at the American table alongside beer and wine,” she defends. Not only is cider right in the middle of the two in terms of alcohol content, but it also has unique characteristics that serve well

for food pairing. “[Cider] has the texture of tannin combined with a lot of bracing acidity, which you may get in a white wine — but you don’t get the tannins in a white wine.” While Stoscheck and her husband produce a still cider on their small orchard in Van Etten, N.Y., they specialize in crafting champagne-style ciders primarily because, at this point, consumers expect bubbles. Just don’t confuse any of their nine original blends with six-pack hard ciders manufactured with glucose syrup and artificial flavors. Eve’s Ciders are made from upward of 30 apple varieties grown exclusively for brewing. It’s harvest season in New York — the second largest apple producing state in the U.S. — and for Stoscheck that means the start of a new production cycle. “We press our apples in the fall

In a league of its own Connoisseurs should note that locally made ciders differ from British or French ones because American cider farming is still in its adventurous youth, according to Stoscheck, who founded Eve’s Cidery just 10 years ago. “In the same way that there’s traditions around winemaking in the old world, it’s corollary with cider,” she says. “But we’re a young country.

There’s a lot of reinvention going on.” This means that makers like herself have room to experiment, determining which apple varieties do and don’t grow in the region and ultimately how to best express the aura of the place in which they’re grown. The result is refreshing in more ways than one. “It’s all just now happening, emerging,” says Stoscheck, optimistically. “That’s the fun thing about trying local ciders. We’re inspired by European traditions, but we’re not bound by them.”

It’s a really good palate cleanser for heavy stuff.” You’re a cheese fiend who’s feeding the craving: “I would try the Rustica. We don’t add sugar when we disgorge; we top it back up with concentrated juice. So it has a fresh, juicy flavor but it’s alcoholic. It goes nicely with cheddar. If you were going to do something intense like an aged blue, I would recommend our ice cider, The Essence.”

as they ripen and do a primary fermentation, then we age them in the winter,” she explains. “In the spring, we do a secondary fermentation which will result in natural bubbles and then we disgorge; the process [of removing yeast] is just like making grape champagne.” And that impassioned, yearlong process pays off in taste. “We want the bubbles to give that elegant mouth feel that you only get with a natural fermentation,” she says. Tyler Perry plays detective Alex Cross in the action film that hits theaters this weekend.

‘Alex Cross’ Rating: PG-13 Grade: Tyler Perry is the new Alex Cross, stepping into the role Morgan Freeman made famous in “Kiss the Girls.” In this new thriller the detective underestimates a serial killer (a skeletal Matthew Fox) and that rare mistake in judgment ends up changing his life.

BETTE DONE BEFOR SHE HAS

EPER RD RO RICHA

The problems here are many, starting with a TV movie-ready script. The only unused cliche is, “Just the facts, ma'am,” but we’re sure screenwriters are already crafting that line into “Alex Cross 2: My Name’s Not Madea.” Then there is the miscast Perry. His wooden performance makes you wish Freeman was 20 years younger and still agreeable to chasing down bad guys.

‘Paranormal Activity 4’ Rating: R Grade: “Paranormal Activity” fans (those of you who are left) are in for the same ride as usual — only this one should have never started. The fourth installment in the franchise offers viewers the same predictable thrills and a weak storyline that is all too familiar. The film picks up where the last movie left off, but this time the story follows a family who start to experience strange, paranormal happenings in their home when they take in a houseguest. By this stage in the series they’ve used up all the tricks in the book. Similar to the “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” films, there are only so many times that viewers can tolerate seeing the same thing. It’s gotten to the point where there is nothing left to squeeze out of this story. OLIVIA MORROW

Here’s a little perspective to kick off your weekend: Ashton Kutcher is not only having sexual relations with Mila Kunis but he’s also pulling in a whopping $24 million a year. So even though Kutcher is the butt of many jokes, maybe he’s having the last laugh? According to a new article in Forbes, the actor earned that huge salary courtesy of his starring role on the top-rated sitcom, “Two and a Half Men (his tech investments also helped). Following Kutcher were Hugh Laurie and Ray Romano, tied for second place at $18 million thanks to the syndication of “House and “Everybody Loves Raymond. Next: Alec Baldwin of “30 Rock and Mark Harmon of “NCIS in another

GOING DISTANCE

DANIEL BOCZARSKI/REDFERNS

THE

The first nights of the CMJ Music Marathon in NYC yielded hybrids of hip-hop, punk, dance, socially conscious soul and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll

Employing a divide and conquer strategy, Metro let its music-loving writers loose on the streets of New York City for the past few nights to hear what the future sounds like. Among the thousands of bands playing as part of the College Music Journal’s annual blow out Music Marathon, these are the ones we’re feeling right now.

a blend of drum and bass hiphop and tribal hard core. The crowd fed off vocalist MC Ride, who spit lyrics over slowed growly samples mashed into a rock dirge and punctuated by a popping drum kit. The laptop pushes a wall of sound through the audience with a bass so heavy it puts your innards into overdrive.

Death Grips

Motive

Death Grips grabbed the audience by the neck and wrangled sweaty, writhing dance moves from the mosh pit. The feel was primitive and honest, the genre

Let’s call these guys The Strokes 2.0. These Seattle transplants peddle pure melodic rock, with catchy hooks that recall the best moments of The

Deap Vally Considering the oversaturation of bleeps and bloops lately, Joan Jett-esque grrl rock duo Deap Vally are a welcome change. Skimpy, sequined outfits, long hair and heavy rockin’ are the name of the game for these L.A. women who are already signed to Island Records and will open for Muse in Europe later this fall. Rewind your clock to the ’70s and get down with Lindsey Troy’s raspy vocals.

Cody ChessnuTT

Death Grips

Killers and the fuzzy vocals that remind us of a more cheerful Julian Casablancas. With their videos getting top ratings on MTV.com, soon everyone will have some Motive of their own.

Flying Lotus Flying Lotus’ expansive smile and wide range as a DJ kept pace with a crowd still feeling the highs of Death Grips. The DJ/producer managed to blend Radiohead and Erykah Badu, both are frequent collaborators, with his own mellifluous rhythms.

Mykki Blanco Mykki Blanco, the alter ego of Michael Quattlebaum Jr., mixed a helping of tribal beats with her radical rap to a young face-paint laden crowd at the FADER Fort pop-up space in Williamsburg. The solo artist follows in the nontraditional path of recent indie hip-hop a la Odd Future, successfully dipping into punk and electro while retaining individuality. Contributed by Metro/ Pat Healy/Heidi Patalano/ Chris Leo Palermino/ Eve Hyman/Peter Haslanger

Cody ChessnuTT provides the type of socially conscious lyrics that Gil Scott-Heron perfected, but with the type of warm and beautiful timbre that Marvin Gaye perfected. ChesnuTT treated listeners to tunes from his long-awaited “Landing on a Hundred,” which comes out Oct. 30, almost exactly 10 years and one month after his last full-length album. With subject matter ranging from a disrespectful nephew to the redemption of somebody who “used to smoke crack back in the day,” this is sociopolitical soul.

Here’s the thing about oneman shows: There’s a 50/50 chance they’ll suck, and even the best ones shouldn’t have the hubris to last past an hour and a half. But “Helen & Edgar is the exception. Hailed by bestselling author Neil Gaiman as a “genius, Edgar Oliver was first discovered at the famous storytelling showcase, The Moth. His talent for telling the true tales of his riveting, “Grey Gardensesque childhood catapulted him into popularity, leading to his two-hour one-man show now playing at Theater 80. In it, Oliver recounts chapters of his unique adolescence in Savannah, Ga., in the company of his mother, Louise, and sister, the titular Helen: “Mother used to say to us, ‘Beware of other people. They won’t understand you. We’re different. We’re artists.’ So all throughout my childhood it was always just the three of us — Mother, Helen and me. Raised in the wounded, delusional abstract of reality dictated by their sick mother, the siblings see nothing strange about living in a house towering with trash and treasures, well before the age of “Hoarders. The ivy-clad domicile be-

comes the lens through which Oliver’s oral Bildungsroman is framed. “All the rooms upstairs were stacked to the rafters with

trunks and chests of drawers and crates and armoires and boxes all locked and filled with Mother’s secrets, Oliver explains in his hypnotic, hyper-articulate cadence. “Almost no one ever made it into our house, especially relatives. Mother was deeply suspicious of relatives. Oliver takes listeners on a raw, riveting and — despite its eccentricity — highly relatable journey. After all, what adult hasn’t suffered along the path to freedom from their parents and past? But can these two especially affected siblings ever truly escape their mother and become well-adjusted independents? Find out — it’s just $25 for one hell of a fascinating Southern Gothic folktale. You know what he meant; focus on the achievement RE: “GOP CANDIDATE’S REPLY GOES VIRAL” (METRO, OCT. 18)

People with the most minimal intellect should be able to figure out that when Romney talked about binders full of women, he meant their résumés. Frankly, I can’t figure out what all the hullabaloo is about. If this is the best that Obama’s supports can come away with from the debate, then it’s obvious that Romney is doing quite well. By the way, when Romney was governor, his cabinet had the most percentage of women in leadership positions than any state in the nation. I wonder how many tweets that tidbit of information got.

Mitt Romney is catching quite a bit of heat for his binder full of woman comment which is unfortunate. He did what any courageous leader who was unwilling to accept the status quo should do. He immediately realized when he became governor that there was an unequal number of women employed there compared to the number of men. He then directed his team to interview for qualified people and compile a list, which is where the binder came from. That was the right thing to do. The focus should be on how woman employed by the Obama administration currently make 18% less than their male counterparts, or how the poverty levels among woman in this country is at a 17-year high. If I were a female voter, those are the

statistics I would focus on. JOEY WHITMOYER, VIA E-MAIL

day in the Rose Garden. Romney, in his usual reckless fashion, basically called the president a liar. Crowley, who happened to be there that day, clarified: “He did, in fact, sir.” This was perfectly within the bounds of moderating, asking pointed follow-ups, and getting at the truth. Isn’t that the purpose of these debates? Secondly, why is Romney’s team splitting hairs on this? Did we initially believe that the attack was planned or spontaneous — who cares? It was only natural to connect it to the mobbing of the U.S. embassy in Cairo that same day. The key is not how it was defined and when; the point is that it happened, now how did we respond? Romney doesn’t seem to have any specific criticism of our military and security response to the attack, only this pointless argument over when it was publicly declared a “planned act of terror” rather than a spontaneous act of terror.

What went wrong ...

1

Power righty — The Yankee struggles against right-handed pitchers was obvious in the whole series. Never was it more so than facing Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer back-to-back.

2

Leadoff disaster — After Derek Jeter went down in Game 1, the Yankees needed a leadoff hitter. Instead, they got 0-for-11 the next three games between Ichiro and Brett Gardner.

3

Triple Crowned — You can’t beat the Tigers if you don’t get Miguel Cabrera out. He had a .381 on-base percentage, a homer in Game 4 and four RBIs. METRO

The Yankees’ season officially died Thursday at 7:35 p.m. The preliminary autopsy report lists the cause of death as impotent offense. The season began its slow and painful death Saturday and Sunday with losses at Yankee Stadium. The pace accelerated Tuesday in Detroit and finally keeled over in all facets as the Yankees were eliminated from the ALCS with an ugly 8-1 loss Thursday afternoon. The Yankees hit an astounding low .157 in losing to Detroit for the third time in

The Yankees hit a miserable .157 in the postseason, with the heart of the order — Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano — going 11-for-95 (.116). the postseason. The Yankee bats also batted .188 in nine playoff games while striking out 83 times. Up and down the lineup —

with the exception of Ichiro and Raul Ibanez — there were underachieving hitters on a roster with the highest payroll in the game. Nick Swisher returned after his one-game benching and in what was likely his last game for the Yankees went 1for-4 and finished the postseason with five hits in 30 at-bats. Robinson Cano was hitless in four at-bats, 1-for-18 in the series and 3-for-40 in the postseason, a performance that followed up a .313 regular season and 24 hits in his last 39

regular season at-bats. Alex Rodriguez was not in the starting lineup for the third time in the postseason and a day after trade rumors mentioned Miami as a destination, he pinch hit for Ibanez in the sixth and flied out to center. He also made the second out of the ninth and has gone 86 at-bats without a postseason home run while going 3for-25 in his eighth postseason as a Yankee. LARRY FLEISHER sports@metro.us

Tebow could add another duty to his resume this Sunday as a running back. Since Powell and McKnight represent the Jets’ second and third running backs on their depth chart, they desperately could use depth at the position. “That’s a possibility. The thing about Tim, with him being a football player like we’ve talked about, by playing quarterback he knows all the posi-

I think the answer is yes.” Ryan also sees Tebow — often panned for his throwing mechanics but praised for his athletic abilities — as someone who could transition to running back if need be. “I think you start with a skill set, but I think his skill set would be more based on power,” Ryan said. “I think he’s not going to be a blazer compared

Pesky Wildcat — Through six games, the Tim Tebow-led Wildcat hasn’t produced as expected, partly due to the offensive line having difficulty executing anything related to the running game. After running the ball so effectively against the Colts, the Jets need more of the same this week. to other running backs but he has power.” Through the season’s first six games, Tebow has 18 rushes for 64 yards, all of which came either as the Wildcat quarterback or in a trick play as the personal punt protector. Chiming in earlier this week, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick alluded to just what Ryan suggested Thursday. “He carries the ball quite a bit so to some degree he's a running back,” Belichick said. It may be the first and last time Ryan and Belichick agree on something.

Locked up — It says something that Mark Sanchez answered questions with his 11-for-18, 82yard performance last week. Yes, he was efficient and he did throw two touchdowns, but the proclaimed face of the franchise simply managed the game. Is this the best that can be expected of a first-round pick now in his fourth year? It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but they’ll need Sanchez to do the same. METRO/KD
