Residents left in the dark The Long Island Power Authority promised to have power back to almost everyone by today – except nearly 30,000 people, a total of 29,000, in the Rockaways. The power company said that Sandy damaged electrical panels and wires, and that homeowners need to hire an

Rockaways residents wondered why they were expected to take the first steps to get their power restored. “They say get in touch, but how are we supposed to get in touch?” said resident and retired orderly Timothy Curtin, 50, who said his phone battery kept draining. “We have 10 minutes on the cell phone.”

NEW YORK. Mayor

Michael Bloomberg announced a plan yesterday to repair extensive damage to public schools and hospitals, calling for $200 million for the Department of Education and $300,000 for the NYC Health and Hospital Corporation. Many structures are left mangled. Dozens waited in line at a center filled with free food and supplies.

The Rockaways are waiting. Residents here are waiting for power, for hot water and for basic necessities, from cancer medicine to a warm lunch. Two weeks after the storm, as Long Island was promised power today and Con Edison trumpeted turning lights back on nearly everywhere, 30,000 in the Queens peninsula are still in the sand-clogged dark. The Long Island Power Authority could not provide an estimate as to when locals would receive power, suggesting only that they should hire an electrician to fix water issues first. Meanwhile, hours are spent in lines — a 51-year-old woman waited at 10 a.m. to receive a rumored LIPA credit. “We hear so many stories,” she said, “so we just showed up.” Locals say the neighborhood is better — chunks of ragged boardwalk are at least in piles, and streets are mostly passable. But wires poke out of sand, generators hum between buildings and some sift through piles of clothes dumped on the sand. Attorney Michael McDermott, 42, has an enormous

Businesses open their doors to employees displaced after Sandy NYC EDC

One of the heart-warming stories to come out of Superstorm Sandy was that of the New York Daily News, aided by its competitors after the staff was displaced from the offices with its printing press knocked out by the storm. Rival news organizations from The New York Times to the Hartford Courant printed for them, and The Associated Press and Jewish Week opened their doors to lend office space. But yesterday morning, Metro obtained an e-mail from Daily News CEO Bill Holiber to his staff, informing them of a search to find temporary office space for up to a year, as water was still being pumped from their office building at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan. He estimated nine months for the building’s recovery. “Putting a timetable on this will surely get me into trouble, but hopefully we will all be relocated by the end of January,” Holiber wrote. “Please understand that many things could come up to alter this goal.” The Daily News is just one of many businesses that have been displaced by the storm, and city and state officials are scrambling to offer assistance. On Oct. 31, just days after the storm hit, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced an initiative offering free temporary office space for 30 days at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park. The space, spanning 40,000

Other hard-hit utilities in the area — Consolidated Edison in New York and units of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. and FirstEnergy Corp. in New Jersey — restored service to almost all customers over the weekend. Sandy left about 8.5 million electric customers without service in 21 states after hitting the New Jersey coast on Oct. 29. Sandy hit LIPA harder than any other power company, knocking out more than 1 million of its 1.1 million customers, while a nor’easter last week knocked out 123,000 more customers. REUTERS

Retail giant Target is meeting resistance to its earlier Thanksgiving Day opening from both sides of the aisle — employees and consumers. An online petition started by a Target employee garnered more than 165,000 signatures by last night in a quest to dissuade the company from opening on Thanksgiving to jump-start its Black Friday sales. Target and Toys R Us both announced earlier store hours for this year’s holiday. Target will open three hours earlier at 9 p.m., and Toys R Us will open its doors at 8 p.m. “Since workers need to show up sometimes hours before the story officially opens, this will take much of Thanksgiving away from retail employees across the country, said Casey Renee, the worker who launched “Target: Take

the high road and save Thanksgiving. “Target can take the high road and save Thanksgiving for employees like me and our families by saying no to ‘Thanksgiving Creep,’ she added. Molly Snyder, a Target spokesperson, replied on behalf of the retail giant: “Across the country, each store asked team members for their preferences and schedules were created to meet the needs of our team and the business, she said. “Target appreciates our team’s flexibility throughout the holiday season. Snyder said the holiday season is highly competitive, with Thanksgiving weekend being one of the busiest times of the year.

US lawmakers to probe FBI’s Petraeus investigation The Senate Intelligence Committee will investigate why the FBI failed to immediately notify the White House and Congress when it discovered that ex-CIA Director David H. The FBI began investigating after a woman, a friend of Petraeus and his wife, Holly, complained to law enforcement about receiving harassing e-mails, according to two officials briefed on the probe. Target and Toys R Us are joining the U.S. retailers offering holiday specials earlier, including on Thanksgiving Day, to kickstart the biggest selling season of the year. The stakes are high for U.S. retailers, which earn more than a third of their annual sales during the holiday season. Traditionally, they have waited until Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, to make their big end-of-the-year push. That is changing as retailers try to get shoppers into their stores before their rivals do, making Thanksgiving Day about more than eating turkey and watching football. While retailers say people are eager to head to stores after their Thanksgiving meals, some employees wish they

US could be energy self-sufficient by 2035 The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world’s top oil producer by 2017, the West’s energy agency said yesterday, predicting Washington will come very close to achieving a previously unthinkable energy self-sufficiency. The International Energy Agency said it saw a continued fall in U.S. oil imports with North America becoming a net oil exporter by around 2030 and the United States becoming almost self-sufficient in energy by 2035. “The United States, which currently imports around 20 percent of its total energy needs, becomes all but self-sufficient in net terms — a dramatic reversal of the trend seen in most other energy importing countries,” it said. Fight against terrorism Britain grants bail to bin Laden’s right-hand man Radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada won a last-minute appeal yesterday against deportation from Britain to face terrorism charges in Jordan, a blow to the Conservative-led government that says he is a huge security risk. Britain, where Qatada has been in and out of jail for seven years without charge since his arrest in 2002, had argued that a 2005 deal with Jordan and more recent diplomatic assurances would ensure that Qatada would obtain a fair trial there. Described by a Spanish judge as “Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe,” he has been a thorn in the side of successive British governments. REUTERS

NYT: Don’t mention the BBC A host of challenges confront Mark Thompson as he officially takes over as chief executive of New York Times Co., from making the company less dependent on advertising to trimming costs to figuring out what to do with its pile of cash. Thompson, who reported for work as NYT Co.’s CEO for the first time yesterday, is also dealing with questions resulting from a series of scandals that have rocked his former employer, the BBC. When asked if the BBC saga would be a distraction, Thompson said: “I believe it will not in any way affect my job, which I’m starting right now as chief executive of the New York Times Company.” In a mail to staff, chairman of the company, Arthus Sulzberger, made no reference to the scandal at the BBC. “We welcome him at a time of tremendous change and challenge, which must be met with equal focus and innovation," Sulzberger said. Thompson served as director-general of the BBC from 2004 until September. The unaired BBC program about Savile was shelved while Thompson was director-general. Thompson begins as NYT Co. CEO just weeks after the company reported bruising third-quarter results that missed revenue and profit expectations and sent shares tumbling 22 percent. His arrival marks the first time the company has had a CEO since Janet Robinson last December.

Scandal worsens for embattled BBC The scandal engulfing Thompson’s former employer, the BBC, worsened yesterday when it was revealed that his successor as director-general, George Entwistle, had been given a full year’s salary payoff despite quitting after just 54 days in charge. Entwistle, who quit because the BBC failed to carry out rudimentary checks before accusing a leading politician of pedophilia, walks away with around $750,000. And Tom Davie, installed as temporary director-general, walked out of a Sky News TV interview. Two other key BBC executives stepped down yesterday, and disciplinary action was started against a number of others. METRO

After helping countless knee pain sufferers eliminate their pain, a local doctor warns,

If you or a loved one are scheduled for knee surgery,

READ THIS ARTICLE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! Free Reports are Available!

Our solution... Our office uses Hyalgan® According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), there are about 270,000 knee replacement operations performed each year in the United States. This image depicts the procedure.

Want to avoid knee surgery?

Why do knee injections often fail?

Our program could be the solution you are looking for.

Most doctors today do one of three things:

Do your knees hurt when going up or down the stairs? Do you frequently take medication for knee pain? Have you tried physical therapy? Do the activities you enjoy cause pain in your knees? Have you had cortisone or other injections to the knee that have not worked?

What’s different about our procedure? 1) They perform “blind injections” (an injection done without imaging guidance). 2) They use antiquated equipment from as far back as 2001, even in some of the largest hospitals in New York. 3) They use Cortisone, which can have side effects.

Precision is the difference. FACT: 30-40% of blind injections result in needle misplacement. [1]With this much inaccuracy, it’s no wonder most people never find relief.

If you answered YES to any of these questions, keep reading... metro new york

When will I feel results? Most feel an immediate reduction in pain and can return to normal activities in weeks.

Yes, most insurances will cover this treatment*. We work with Medicare: GHI PPO

Are you afraid that your knee pain is only going to get worse?

Hyaluronic acid (Hyalgan®) is a natural substance extracted from rooster combs and purified to mimic the lubricating substances that occur naturally in the joint, called synovial fluid. In patients with osteoarthritis, synovial fluid “dries up”, allowing the cartilage of the joint to rub against itself and other surfaces. This causes pain, inflammation, and usually damage to the joint. Think of this treatment like oiling a rigid, squeaky door hinge.

Will my insurance cover this treatment?

Do your knees make you feel older than you really are?

New pot laws spark fears among dealers

After Colorado and Washington state voted to legalize marijuana on Nov. 6, Metro talks to dealers who say they will become victims GETTY IMAGES

Liberal campaigners celebrated victory with the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington state. But existing traders, legal and illegal, worry the new system could force them out. “It could be better to keep it medicinal use only, Michele Ballinger, manager of the Herbs Medicinal dispensary in Berthoud, Colo., told Metro. “The community have tolerated us here, but there is still a lot of suspicion, and if it becomes big business, that will put under pressure. Herbs Medicinal is the only dispensary in town and has slowly won acceptance, although some residents have moved houses in protest, Ballinger says. Residents will vote later this month on banning dispensaries from selling the drug openly. “If that passes, we will have to leave, says Ballinger. A major concern is the possible influx of marijuana

Colorado weed law raises drug war doubts, Costa Rica leader says SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA. The legalization of recreational marijuana use in the states of Colorado and Washington last week will lead Latin America to increasingly question the merits of the war on drugs, said Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla. There are also fears about the law in Washington, with a local street dealer believing it will damage his business. “If there is industrial growing and businesses selling, the market will be flooded and the value will drop, he told Metro. The dealer also fears a backlash from the police. “Harassment will continue, and I would expect a kind of retalia-

The legalization is in conflict with federal law, which still views possession as a criminal offense. “Once the states actually try to implement these laws, we will see an effort by the feds to shut it down, claimed former presidential adviser Kevin Sabet. Experimenting with Exposure Compensation: Digital cameras continue to pack more features in a smaller form factor and current design allows us to often get good photos when shooting in auto mode. Still, there are times when your camera won’t ‘see’ your subject and lighting properly and may underexpose or overexpose the image. You can make slight adjustments by either moving the Exposure Compensation setting to a negative number (such as -1), which will make the image a bit darker, or adjusting to a positive number (such as +1), which tells the camera to make the image brighter. Adjusting exposure compensation is a technique that can help you create a more balanced image, but it does take a bit of experimentation. Each situation will be different and slight changes in light and position can impact how your camera ‘reads’ the scene. It can be a powerful tool and one that helps you realize that you, as a photographer, control the camera and not the other way around.

History and thrills under the big top PHOTOS: BERTRAND GUAY/BIG APPLE CIRCUS

New York City’s own circus rises to the occasion Audience members watch, wide-eyed, as animals, a contortionist and clowns take the stage This season’s Big Apple Circus, “Legendarium,” blends a little French into its New York accent. Celebrating the history of this family-friendly art form, the show’s clever designs and wonderful live band carry the audience back to 1859 when Jules Leotard performed the first flying trapeze act in Paris and gave his name to the ubiquitous dancewear. Ringmaster John Kennedy Kane’s big, deep voice keeps

us apprised of the action, but everything else is wordless: acrobats jump over a pair of oxen, a dozen gorgeous horses circle in elaborate patterns, a beautiful contortionist ties herself in knots and shoots an arrow — with her feet! Everybody dances. The band plays Gershwin and Borodin, and trapeze artists keep us both terrified and thrilled with our hearts in our mouths. The pleasures of this year’s edition are subtle, delighting circus scholars as much as they do kids watching with wide-eyed wonder. Only the clowns fall flat; this year we miss Grandma, who retired in 2011. The new Acrobuffos strike the wrong tone for this crowd, relying on sexual innuendo and body image insult to get laughs.

If you go Big Apple Circus ‘Legendarium’ Through Jan. 13 Damrosch Park, Lincoln Center 62nd St. between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues $25-$175, 888-541-3750 www.bigapplecircus.org

Keep pushin’ till it’s understood Photographer Eric Meola has also recently released a new book on the Boss. The shots in “Streets of Fire: Bruce Springsteen in Photographs and Lyrics 19771979” were taken at the sparsely decorated farmhouse Springsteen rented after “Born to Run” made him a star. They almost look like demo versions of the cover of “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” “He would stand in attic alcoves with light coming in and creating beautiful shadows and I started to realize that the emptiness of the house reflected a lot of the loneliness and despair that was going on in the music,” says Meola.

hen Peter Ames Carlin learned that Bruce Springsteen was willing to sit down with him for the Boss biography he was writing, the author had to keep himself in check. Yes, this was the first time that Springsteen would be cooperating with a biographer in 25 years, and yes, this was the man who had helped inform his world vision, but Carlin had a warts-and-all book to write. “For me, the thing that mattered was that I was working on this book and this could conceivably be the difference between it being an extraordinary book and being another book about Bruce Springsteen,” he says about his finished product, which is simply titled “Bruce.” Through interviews with family members and band members past and present, Carlin unearths

The hunt for the red plus sign

‘Who Lives Here?’ / ‘What Happens Next?’

The home pregnancy test has come a long way Historians would like to be able to demonstrate this to the public — if only they could find the original Thirty-five years ago, EPT’s original home pregnancy test looked like a chemistry set. It took anxious women around two hours to find out the good (or bad) news. Nevertheless, it was a breakthrough, allowing women to know reliably whether or not they were in the early stages of pregnancy without visiting the family physician. And even though it was bulky and big, they could still buy it for about $10 at their local drugstore. In addition to being a technological innovation, this original kit represents a cultural and regulatory landmark, making it a desirable addition to collections at medical history museums and even government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration,

which approved the device in 1976. But, perplexingly, no one can seem to find one of these original kits. The Dittrick Medical History Museum, home to the Percy Skuy Collection — the largest collection of historical contraceptive devices in the world — hasn’t given up hope.

All pluses The kits’ broad appeal was understandable, says Sarah Leavitt, who developed a Web exhibit for the NIH on the history of the home pregnancy test. “[The kit] can address a lot of different stories, including the history of choice and medical testing,” she says.

Dittrick’s staff has faith that an original home pregnancy test will turn up since they have more than 400 IUDs in their collection. “Who would think that someone would save their IUD?” said Jennifer Kane Nieves, registrar and archivist at the museum about another groundbreaking reproductive device. “But we’ve gotten plenty of them.” The biggest challenge in finding one is the nature of the kit itself, said James Edmonson, chief curator. “They’re meant to be used and discarded,” he said. “But sometimes, things turn up in curious places.” MARY SHELL

The Price isn’t right on fiscal solution RE: “GOP: ‘FISCAL CLIFF’ DEAL CAN BE MADE” (METRO, NOV. 12)

On the “Chris Wallace Show,” Tom Price (R-GA) offered this solution to avoid going over the fiscal cliff: (a) close loopholes, (b) lower tax rates and (c) reduce spending on entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid. This proposal is unacceptable. Closing loopholes increases tax revenues, but lowering rates decreases tax revenues; so, in effect, we will gain virtually no benefit from tax reform. We are then left with an austerity program that targets entitlements. Intransigence on proposals such as his might push us to the brink, once again.

RE: “DEMS SELECTIVE OVER WHICH RICH PEOPLE THEY HATE” (METRO NOV. 12) John

Arslaian’s letter shows how conservatives misrepresent issues and engage in personal attacks, instead of looking at real issues. “Democrats hate” is a personal attack. The letter asks why they hate, without establishing that they do. Dems don’t hate rich people. They are trying to fix the rules that have favored the rich since Reagan implemented trickle-down economics. The middle class has stagnated. It didn’t trickle down. HARRY THORN, VIA E-MAIL

Mr. Arslaian writes with questions as to why some individ-

uals of wealth are seemingly adored by the public, while others are disdained or outright loathed. I cannot speak for the nation, but the answers seem fairly apparent. It is their actions that are hated, not their bank accounts. There are two main aspects of wealth: how it was achieved and how it is used. Those who achieved their riches by means that are morally reprehensible, regardless of legality, are held in poor light. Once those riches are achieved, what is done with them? Money is always a means, never a goal. Those who pursue it endlessly are attempting to acquire power. If you fund organizational that promote inequality, or use large amounts in self-serving ways, you’re not going to win any accolades. If, howev-

Moral decadence leads to societal chaos and cultural breakdown, which then creates the perfect conditions for the rise of authoritarianism and dictatorship. That is the “lesson” that this election may ultimately teach us. The question is: Will anyone pay attention before it is too late? Those who don’t learn from history are usually doomed to repeat it. Taurus April 20-May 20. If at all possible, engage in projects that you have the knowledge, experience and expertise to handle properly. Getting in over your head could be risky. Gemini May 21-June 20. When negotiating a matter of importance, don’t make any unnecessary concessions. It’ll serve you better if you deal from your strengths, not from your weaknesses. Cancer June 21-July 22. Try to face career or work issues head-on, instead of attempting to circumvent them. Problems will most assuredly get worse over time if you simply sweep them under the rug. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. Distractions will reduce all your productive efforts and turn your day into a waste. If you hope to succeed in your efforts, you must have focus. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. If you’re not careful, you could easily get so involved in outside matters that you fail to take care of the things you should be handling. Keep your priorities in sound working order. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. In order to get others to do your bidding, you could be tempted to bribe them with some big promises that you’ll not be able to keep. This is not a good way to get along with your cohorts. BERNICE BEDE OSOL

Maximizing a weekend in Mexico City

+

It’s cheaper than ever to take a quick jaunt to Mexico’s vibrant capital city Get a taste of ancient and modern Mexico in a single weekend Save room for street food

M

exico City is like a map of the human brain: a simmering, complex, ever-changing storehouse of history, art, fashion and food. At 574 square miles (New York is only 467) and 20 million people, you could spend weeks just getting acquainted. But with cheaper fares now available, it’s possible to learn this fascinating city in shorter increments.

What to do: Sunday Start your day in Coyoacan, a quaint, relaxed neighborhood and home to Casa Azul, where artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived from 1929 to 1954. Their passion is evident in both their lovingly preserved household and their exhibited works. But let’s get real — you’re there for the food. A few blocks south of Casa Azul is the Mercado de Coyoacan, a massive indoor space where vendors sling some of the freshest (and cheapest) street fare in the city. Service is friendly but dizzyingly brisk — just belly up to a table, be brave and order. Pointing is fine. Don’t miss Tostadas de Coyoacan, where shrimp or fish ceviche is piled atop delicately crisp tortillas. Continue south to the Plaza del Coyocan to cool your tongue with a paleta (popsicle) or to re-energize with a cappuccino. Just off the plaza is the Mercado Artisinal, where you can shop for local crafts and freshly blended molé powder (which, unlike the fresh paste, can be smuggled home in your carry-on).

Ancient stone temples are tucked among the greenery at the Museum of Anthropology.

What to do:

ALL PHOTOS REBECCA FINKEL

Saturday A good place to start is the Museum of Anthropology, where you’ll get a sense of the country’s ancient culture and mythology. With jet lag working in your favor, head over early to beat the crowds, and then wander among edifices of ancient temples, handmade gold and turquoise jewelry and the original Stone of the Sun, aka the Aztec Calendar. After learning what’s come before, it’s time to plunge into modern Mexico. Head to the Zocalo, the bustling plaza in the heart of historic downtown, and stop into the National Palace to see Diego Rivera’s rustic yet bitingly political murals. Spend a quiet moment in the Metropolitan Cathedral before lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square — and the excavation of an ancient temple found during a dig to lay the

The Sheraton Maria Isabel is an anchor in a sprawling city, located on the Paseo de la Reforma, with views of the gilded Angel of Independence and Chapulte-

pec Park, the largest city park in the Western Hemisphere. Stop in to the ’60s time capsule Bar Jorango for a shot of tequila with a side of sangrita. Don’t be surprised to suddenly find yourself in a squall of mariachis.

Giants to do ‘soul searching’ over bye GETTY IMAGES

The Giants head into their bye week limping instead of strutting. But to a man, they still see the big picture. “We still have a lead in the division, and we do have a bye week,” Eli Manning said. “We have six games left after the bye and we have to take advantage of those. If we have a winning record down the stretch,

then we should be good.” The Giants (6-4) were anything but good in their 31-13 defeat by the Bengals. Instead, they laid their second straight egg against a physical team from the AFC North. “There is an opportunity for us to do some soul searching and look ourselves in the mirror this week,” Tuck said. “Just

get away from football a little bit, refresh our bodies and minds, and get back to playing Giants’ football. ... If not, none of the next six are going to be easy. We’re capable of turning this around. That’s where our mindset has to go.” Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin has seen this story before, as he’s been in charge of

some memorable Giants’ second-half collapses. “By winning [Sunday], I thought we’d be able to put ourselves in a better position, in terms of we had the bye, and other people in our division would be playing,” Coughlin said. “But that didn’t happen, so we have to deal with it when we get back.” TONY WILLIAMS

Brady slams Jets on RB

In the news MLB rookies

Tom Brady knows how to kick a team while it’s down. Brady, coming off a 37-31 win over the Bills on Sunday, was asked about Danny Woodhead on WEEI yesterday morning. Woodhead, who scored two touchdowns against Buffalo, was cut by the Jets prior to the 2010 season. “We saw that [first] week in practice what he was capable of doing, and we kept saying, ‘God, why did the Jets release this guy?’” Brady said. “They had him playing receiver and he was a running back in college.” METRO

The first of the end of year MLB awards were announced yesterday. And they were the least surprising. Washington rookie Bryce Harper won the NL Rookie of the Year over Wade Miley and Rutgers alum Todd Frazier. Angels outfielder Mike Trout won the AL Rookie of the Year award by unanimous vote. Trout, 20, became the youngest winner of the AL award in MLB history.

your man Rex Ryan refuses to entertain switching to Tim Tebow at quarterback Sanchez’s stats worst of his career Coach still ‘believes in our offense’ The non-stop spin from the Jets continued yesterday, just a day after one of quarterback Mark Sanchez’s worst performances in his four years in the league. Sanchez was at the center of many of the Jets’ problems on Sunday afternoon in Seattle during a 28-7 loss. Sanchez went 9-of-22 for 124 yards with an interception and three sacks. His 40.9 completion percentage was the fifth time this season he was under 50 percent and his completion percentage of 52 percent on the season is last in the NFL by three percentage points. His QB rating is second-to-last in the league. Yet the Jets are sticking with Sanchez despite the al-

ternative offered by Tim Tebow. “Each week you look at what is the best thing for our football team. Mark is our starting quarterback. I believe in our offense. I know we haven’t looked great, haven’t put up the numbers we hoped to, wanted to,” head coach Rex Ryan said yesterday. “But again, if you’re making some positive steps — which I think we are — you have to believe and hope you keep getting better in areas and turn it around.” Sanchez is just 11-14 over the past two seasons and has a more disappointing 3-9 in his last dozen games. There isn’t a panic from Ryan to switch to a quarter-

back with a proven track record — Tebow took the Broncos to the postseason and won a game last season — despite the 3-6 Jets being longshots at best for the playoffs. “If it was just one position, that’s where the entire focus would be, but there are a lot of things. Are we getting separation on our routes? Are we catching the football on a consistent bases? How’s about the protection?” Ryan said. “There’s a lot of things going into evaluating a quarterback. If it was just one guy it’s easy to do — you just focus on this. Collectively, we have to get better.” KRISTIAN DYER sports@metro.us

St. John’s dealing with youth — again JIM MCISAAC/GETTY IMAGES

St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin is thrilled with his team’s balance. If only he had something to base it on, other than two exhibition wins. The Red Storm have 13 players who are either freshmen or sophomores. And their only experienced senior, God’sgift Achiuwa, might end up redshirting. “We have seven or eight guys on a given night who can get between 15 and 20 [points], Lavin said after the team’s final exhibition game. “There’s balance up and down the roster. One thing we’re not balanced in is our experience. This is the least experienced team I’ve coached in my career.

St. John’s vs. Detroit 2 p.m., ESPN

Lavin, who took off last season as he dealt with prostate cancer, is trying to instill a culture in what is essentially his second season. He started by punishing D’Angelo Harrison, the team’s top returning player. “It’s really important as we build our culture at St. John’s ... [that] young people understand the consequences for their actions, for their choices, Lavin said. “Building a team, a culture, you have to make sure as a head coach you don’t compromise. MARK OSBORNE

Amir Garrett averaged 7.4 points last season but spent the summer pitching in rookie league for the Reds.

There aren’t many familiar faces on the St. John’s roster, but they have a chance to compete in the Big East.

SF Amir Garrett (Soph.) Garrett was a big-time recruit last year but only sporadically lived up to it. He’ll be counted on for more scoring. SF JaKarr Sampson (Fr.) Scout ranked him the No. 38 recruit in the nation. He’s reminiscent of Rudy Gay. It’s possible he’s one-and-done. G D’Angelo Harrison (Soph.) Harrison is the top returning scorer, but he’s run into some discipline problems. He’s an undersized two-guard who can really shoot. PF Chris Obekpa (Fr.) The No. 68 recruit in the nation, he’s a prototypical glass cleaner and shot blocker.
