Proposed NYPD inspector general called ‘wasteful’
A 53-year-old man reportedly fell to his death while trying to save a cat from a tree in the Bronx on Monday. Cops on a routine patrol found an unconscious and unresponsive man around 3 a.m. on Allerton Avenue and Bronx Park East. Police have not released the man’s identity. METRO/DT

IG bill to go before Public Safety Committee NYPD fires back against oversight Skeptics worry mayor-appointed IG will not be independent D DIPASUPIL/GETTY IMAGES
Demands are growing louder for more oversight of the NYPD, but a department official blasted the idea that the force needs any extra sets of eyes. “It’s wasteful and duplicative,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne told Metro exclusively in an e-mail. “No police department in America has more oversight than the NYPD.” A bill that would establish an inspector general who would review and judge the NYPD’s practices has garnered hefty support from city officials, including Speaker Christine Quinn. As it waits to be heard by the city’s Public Safety Committee, independent organizations, like the Brennan Center for Justice at the NYU School of Law, have joined the ranks, supporting the idea that the NYPD should enlist an inspector general, similar to the LAPD. “We are focused on policing policies rather than individual incidents,” Faiza Patel of the Brennan Center for Justice said. “An inspector general would be uniquely positioned to study these policies from inside the police department and provide a neutral evaluation of their effectiveness and legality.” The Bloomberg administration and the NYPD have been routinely vocal about their opposition to the bill, insisting
The NYPD does not want to accept an inspector general to oversee the department’s practices.
Who would get the job? If the proposed bill is ultimately passed, a candidate for inspector general would be appointed by the mayor. In her proposal, Faiza Patel and her co-author, Andrew Sullivan, wrote that the ideal candidate for inspector general is someone who can establish

“Every city agency, including the Department of Education and the FDNY, have inspectors general proactively reviewing policy, as do the CIA and FBI. All the current oversight measures are reactive in their nature. What is the NYPD afraid of?” COUNCILMAN JUMAANE WILLIAMS
“I worked for the police commissioner for a time and we did do a lot of work with stop-and-frisk, and I see no reason why having that second opinion wouldn’t have made it richer for us, rather than hurt us.” JOHN ETERNO, RETIRED NYPD CAPTAIN, MOLLOY COLLEGE PROFESSOR
credibility by being viewed as a neutral party within the NYPD and the community. “I’d probably start by looking at lawyers who have a background in working with law enforcement,” Patel said. “I would look for someone of stature so that he or she can maintain independence. Ideally, the inspector general would be someone who could command the respect of both the
‘Truly independent’? While the idea of an inspector general has apparent overwhelming support, some experts have raised concerns about the bill that will go before the Public Safety Committee. The legislation calls for the city council speaker, public safety chair and civil rights chair to suggest candidates for inspector general to the mayor. However, those recommendations are non-binding and the mayor would ultimately appoint the inspector general. “We have skepticism of whether the agency and person in charge can be truly
the department already has plenty of oversight, including five district attorneys, the New York State Attorney General and the Civilian Complaint Review Board. “Internally, the NYPD devotes about the same number of personnel to oversight as it does to counter-terrorism — approximately 1,000 — with the nation’s most robust and effective Internal Affairs Bureau, as well as inspectional units throughout the department,” Browne fired back. Advocates of an inspector general cite recent firestorms over tactics like stop-and-frisk and Muslim surveillance as reasons more monitoring of practices is vital within the NYPD and that the mechanisms in place aren’t nearly enough. independent,” Robert Gangi, director of the Police Reform Organizing Project at the Urban Justice Center, said. “They are accountable to the same person the NYPD would be accountable to.” Stefan Ringel, spokesman for Councilman Jumaane Williams, who sponsored the bill, said the inspector general would serve seven years, a term that would span multiple mayorships. “We are open to other suggestions and amendments for how the process could work,” Ringel said. “We have written the bill in such a way that it will be able to accomplish oversight while legally permissible within city charter.” METRO/CG
The R train has yet to resume service from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
R train running again through Lower Manhattan For the first time in the month after Hurricane Sandy, the R train is running through Lower Manhattan. Service on the line resumed from 34th St–Herald Square to Whitehall Street on Monday at 6 a.m. The line was flooded with seawater following the storm. According to the MTA, workers are still pumping equipment in an effort to restore the Montague Tube for R train service from Lower Manhattan into Downtown Brooklyn. “The resumption of service to the Whitehall Street station will restore a vital link to Midtown’s west side for Staten Islanders and also ease crowding along the Lexington Avenue line,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Officials reminded riders there is only one working escalator in the Whitehall subway station. METRO/CG

According to the NYPD, the 58-year-old man was thrust into the tracks of a Q train at 49th Street and Seventh Avenue just after 12:30 p.m. After he was unable to climb back onto the tracks, he was struck by the train. The suspect fled the scene. The victim was taken to Saint Luke’s Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police were looking for the suspect Monday night. He was described as a black male in his 20s, with short dreadlocks. METRO

Concrete plan for boardwalks causes concern Bloomberg says no more wood in boardwalks Critics concerned about impact on climate change Sustainability experts are questioning Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s new declaration to end the use of wood in future boardwalk construction. Stretches of the wooden Rockaway boardwalk were torn to pieces by Hurricane Sandy, while much of the concrete remained intact. This is on the heels of the city’s controversial decision to replace parts of the Coney Island boardwalk with concrete, which was met with vigorous resistance from locals. “I guess this settles the issue of wooden boardwalks versus concrete boardwalks,” Bloomberg told local Rockaway paper The Wave. “There will be no more wooden boardwalks in Rockaway or anywhere else.” Advocates are calling for the mayor to consider further scientific evidence, especially in light of both his and Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s multiple assertions that Sandy was the result of climate change. Scott Francisco of the New York-based sustainable design
firm Pilot Projects explains that the production of concrete produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, while wood actually contains carbon that makes up 50 percent of its weight. The sustainable use of wood in construction is considered by experts to be a promising means of keeping carbon out of the atmosphere. Burning or allowing wood to rot releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, making the disposal of the destroyed boardwalk a sensitive issue, Francisco explained. Sustainability experts would like to see the wood reused for things like indoor furniture. The Parks Department has been storing at least some of the wood for possible reuse, though officials have not yet decided how it will be reused, spokeswoman Vickie Karp said. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Is wood to blame? Some locals and sustainability groups insist the boardwalks were destroyed because of faulty engineering, not the materials they were made from, as the wooden boardwalk was
not secured to the concrete supports. Scott Francisco of the New York-based sustainable design firm Pilot Projects said the issue is that no one anticipated the level to which the water would rise, so “uplift resistance” was not a factor considered in the construction of the boardwalk.

MEDITATE. MOTIVATE. AS YOU GET OLDER, REALLY GREAT. BUT DON’T FORGET TO VACCINATE. ZOSTAVAX® (Zoster Vaccine Live) is available at certain pharmacies and medical practices. Talk to your health care professional or visit FINDZOSTAVAX.com for more information. Now’s the time to help prevent Shingles with ZOSTAVAX. ZOSTAVAX is a vaccine that helps prevent Shingles in adults 50 years of age or older. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus stays in your body and can resurface at any time as Shingles—a painful, blistering rash. And no matter how healthy you feel, your risk increases as you get older. The sooner you get vaccinated with ZOSTAVAX, the better your chances of protecting yourself from Shingles. In fact, the ACIP* of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends that appropriate adults 60 years of age and older get vaccinated to help prevent Shingles.
Talk to your health care professional to see if ZOSTAVAX is right for you. ZOSTAVAX is given as a single shot. ZOSTAVAX cannot be used to treat Shingles, or the nerve pain that may follow Shingles, once you have it. For more information, visit ZOSTAVAX.com or call 1-877-9 SHINGLES.

Con Ed got mixed reviews, while LIPA left a large number of New Yorkers disappointed by their response. Prince William and wife Kate expecting a baby

Britain’s Prince William and his wife Catherine are expecting a baby, destined to be the country’s future monarch, although the mother-to-be is in the hospital with a type of very acute morning sickness that sometimes indicates twins. “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby,” the prince’s office said in a statement yesterday, adding that Queen Elizabeth and the royal family were delighted. The couple, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, married in April of last year amid a global media frenzy, and there has been much speculation, particularly in U.S. gossip magazines, about a possible pregnancy. “It’s only been a matter of time. Britain’s royal family is currently riding the crest of popularity on the back of William and Kate’s wedding and the queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year, which has witnessed nationwide celebrations. With their fame has come unwanted attention, and there was anger in Britain when topless photos of Kate relaxing on holiday were published in a French magazine in September. The pictures rekindled memories of the media pursuit of William’s mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while being chased by paparazzi.

Severe sickness forced early announcement of pregnancy Catherine’s pregnancy was announced hurriedly yesterday after she was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in central London for hyperemesis gravidarum, a very severe form of morning sickness. “This is the extreme end of the bell curve,â€? says Dr. Katherine O’Connell White, the division chief of the Obstetrics-Gynecology Department, General Obstetrics and Gynecology Division, Family Planning Section at Boston’s Baystate Medical Center. “Some degree of nausea happens within 50 to 90 percent of pregnancies. Hyperemesis gravidarum is the term for the extreme, which is roughly half a percent to 2 percent of pregnant women.â€? Women with hyperemesis gravidarum are severely dehydrated. They may feel dizzy upon standing, have trouble urinating frequently, pass darkcolored urine and/or lose weight. Medication and sometimes hospitalization is used to treat it. “The hospitalization happens if you are vomiting so much that your electrolytes are imbalanced,â€? Dr. White says. You also can develop keytones in your urine, “a sign that your body is burning through muscle because it doesn’t have enough calories coming in through what you eat.â€? But Dr. White isn’t saying that the mom-to-be brought this upon herself. “It’s not because she’s too skinny, it’s not because she’s privileged — it’s just because she’s unlucky.â€? And even though Kate is suffering, she need not worry about this hurting her child. “As long as she is treated for her dehydration, her pregnancy is not at risk,â€? she says. “In fact, this might be a sign that her pregnancy is healthier.â€? Cold Weather Shooting Tip: Your digital camera can actually lose battery power if it is exposed to prolonged cold weather. Professionals know this and carefully guard their gear against battery drain. Due to a combination of physics and chemistry, batteries work less efďŹ ciently in low temperatures, which can result in your having less shooting time than expected. You can take simple steps to combat this issue. First, if you are shooting outdoors, keep your batteries close to you if at all possible as your body heat will help retain warmth. This tactic can help extend the life of the batteries once you begin shooting. Second, keep an extra set of batteries on you and keep those on your person as well. If you notice your power draining, you’ll have a back-up set of warm batteries to help you continue your outdoor session. It’s a simple solution that can help ensure your shooting session ends on your terms.

US worried Syria may start using chemical weapons
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2012
News in brief METRO FILE PHOTO
GETTY IMAGES
The U.S. is increasingly concerned that Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria might use chemical weapons to put down a rebellion, the White House press secretary, Jay Carney, said. As it fails to stem the upheaval by conventional means, concern “has increased” that the regime might turn to its chemical weapons stockpiles, Carney told reporters at his regular briefing in Washington. Carney refused to say what measures the U.S. may be considering. “Contingency planning is the responsible thing to do,” he said. “The Assad regime must know the world is watching,” he said.

The United Nations said yesterday it was suspending its aid operations in Syria and withdrawing all nonessential international staff due to the worsening security situation. Up to 25 of about 100 foreign staff could leave this week, it said, adding that more armored vehicles were needed after attacks in recent weeks on humanitarian aid convoys and the hijacking of goods or vehicles. Delayed foreclosures: The perfect holiday gift Keep the home — for the holidays, at least
Mortgage lenders’ festive cheer will have a large impact.
Fannie, Freddie put evictions on hold Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said yesterday they would provide a break for borrowers facing foreclosure to ensure those having problems making monthly mortgage payments will remain in their homes during the holidays. Fannie Mae said its eviction moratorium would apply to single-family homes and twoto four-unit properties from Dec. 19 through Jan. 2, 2013. Freddie Mac said it would of-
fer the suspension from Dec. 17 through Jan. 2, 2013. The aid allows families to avoid eviction during that time, but doesn’t mean the foreclosure process will be put on hold. The inventory of foreclosed homes remains a problem for the nascent U.S. housing market recovery and has been weighing on property values. More than 3.5 million homes have been foreclosed on in the last four years, and about 10.8 million borrowers owe more than their properties are worth. REUTERS

Teen deaths force look at tanning beds
High court silent on gay marriage cases
Teenage girls trading the risk of deadly melanoma for a yearround tan have helped spur a global backlash against the sun bed industry. Health officials from Brasilia to Sydney are banning tanning salons amid evidence that they cause malignant lesions. Use of tanning beds causes all three types of skin cancer, especially for people younger than 25, a study published in October from the University of California, San Francisco said. Doctors say the research should prompt tougher warnings on UV tanning machines. BLOOMBERG
The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday remained silent about whether it will enter the legal fray over same-sex marriage and hear one of several pending appeals on the issue. The court met in private to consider whether to review challenges to the U.S. Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal benefits to married same-sex couples, and to California’s Proposition 8. In an “orders list” issued early yesterday, the court made no mention of any of the samesex marriage cases. Instead, it relisted those cases for further consideration at its weekly conference this Friday. REUTERS

Israel will stick to settlement plans Israel rejected concerted criticism from the United States and Europe yesterday over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to expand settlement building after the United Nations’ de facto recognition of Palestinian statehood. Washington urged Israel to reconsider its plan to erect 3,000 more homes in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, saying the move hindered peace efforts with the Palestinians. Kim Kardashian topped the 2012 list of the most-searched person on Bing, the Web search engine said, with Canadian teen pop star Justin Bieber coming in second. Kardashian, the reality television personality from “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” grabbed the No. 1 spot back from Bieber after she topped Bing’s annual list in 2010 and Bieber came in first last year. The 32-year-old first found fame in 2007 due to an Internet sex tape, but it was her deft use of social networking and reality TV that propelled her into a global brand with various clothing lines, diet products and cosmetics. Bieber, 18, came in second after a successful year capped off by sweeping the American Music Awards with his third studio album, “Believe,” which was released in June. Others who made it in top 10 for the first time included singers Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, while Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Megan Fox and Lady Gaga dropped out of the Top 10. Pop culture figures easily trumped politics, even in an election year, with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney coming in 43rd and President Barack Obama landing at 46th on the list. Among the most popular news stories, the release of Apple’s iPhone 5 came in at No. 1,

2 The feed ... Checking in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer. Yesterday, Twitter was abuzz with celebrities celebrating Will and Kate’s pregnancy news. @CherylCole: I’m sooooooo excited that we’re having a royal baby!!!! Congratulations to Kate and Wills!!!!!!
Depp is a man of many talents. And rock-star outfits. He also has plenty of those.
Martinez drops criminal complaint This might not be the biggest shocker considering the recently signed custody agreement between Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, but Olivier Martinez has reportedly dropped his criminal complaint against Aubry for their bloody Thanksgiving brawl, according to Radar Online. “Olivier informed the LAPD and the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office that he was no longer interested in pursuing criminal charges against Aubry,” a source says. “Aubry and Berry worked out a confidential settlement last week that included specific language about how none of the parties — Halle, Gabe or Olivier — would pursue criminal charges against one another. All sides managed to agree to satisfactory terms, with the focus being on ending the mayhem for the sake of Halle and Gabriel’s daughter, Nahla.”
Swift rebounds with Harry Styles Taylor Swift is apparently
eager to spend whatever time
she can with rumored boyfriend Harry Styles. The country crooner jetted to New York less than 24 hours after a big holiday concert to spend the afternoon with the One Direction member, according to Us Weekly. The pair, joined by Styles’ stylist and her family, strolled around the Central Park Zoo, looking cozy.
Depp rocks out with Alice Cooper in LA Johnny Depp knows how to have a good time, and sometimes that means strapping on a guitar and joining Alice Cooper on stage. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star did just that recently at a Cooper concert in Los Angeles, playing along on cover songs including “Break on Through (to the Other Side),” “Revolution” and “Foxy Lady,” according to People magazine. “Johnny was in great spirits,” a source says. “He was really happy and at ease, especially on stage with the rest of the band.” Recently single, Depp was apparently going solo that night, as the source says he wasn’t “with any ladies.”
@ZachBraff: UK, congrats on your royal baby. I think I saw some pictures of the day of conception.

The best books for your music lover They’ve been hooking you up with playlists all year Put one of these books under their tree this Christmas ‘How Music Works’ By David Byrne Talking Heads frontman David Byrne spends the bulk of his writing exploring, not explaining, music. To juggle his personal and professional commitments, the tone leaps between memoir, history lesson, advice column and philosophical exegesis. This format makes for a lively argument, complete with arty flourishes (the page numbers, you’ll notice, are backward).
‘Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me’
‘Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die: Musings from the Road’ By Willie Nelson If one day someone really rolls up Willie Nelson’s corpse and smokes it, it will probably taste like whiskey, denim and an old, battered guitar. This memoir is as rambling as you’d expect, with details of the highwayman’s life blown out in disorienting fragments stitched together in no discernible order. Scattered but vivid, it is an earnest account of a cloudy life on the road.
‘Women Make Noise: Girls Bands from Motown to Modern’ Edited by Julia Downes This collection of essays by journalists, fans, musicians and industry people celebrates the underrecognized history of allgirl rock bands. Beginning with groups like the Supremes and the Ronettes, the scope extends to the present day, covering punk rockers such as the Slits and the experimental pop music of Björk.
By R. Kelly Equal parts genius, joker and sex-fiend, R. Kelly is a complicated man. Even though he tries to isolate these three components of his being, they inevitably spill into each other, ultimately making Kelly the compelling pop star that he is. This hilariously titled memoir is a bizarre ride through Kelly’s crazy life, from Chicago’s South Side to the penthouse to the courtroom to the set of his insane “Trapped In The Closet.”
‘The Wrecking Crew: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll’s Best-Kept Secret’ By Kent Hartman Studio musicians are a humble lot. While stars steal the glory, these poor souls rarely get more than a nod in the liner notes. This book documents the group of Los Angeles session musicians who, in the 1960s, created some of the decade’s best music. You can hear the “Wrecking Crew,” the name given to the dozens of players by drummer Hal Blaine, on albums by the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, and others.

In the early days, working as a two-piece made that sort of schedule a lot more feasible, he says: “When we first started, it
was us in a Ford Explorer. It was a lot easier to make that work with two people. ... In a sixpiece, it’s probably harder to convince six people to go on road for two years. That doesn’t mean that he and guitarist Brian King don’t still have their share of disagreements, but they’re on the same page about most things. “You can’t put anything to a vote, so if you disagree about something you just have to figure it out. We have pretty similar ideas about [the] trickier situations that bands have to make with respect to things like licensing music for advertisements — which is a big thing for a lot of bands, but neither of us are interested in doing that, so it’s easy to say no to that. LUKE O’NEIL
luke.oneil@metro.us
The house that Japandroids built The higher profile of the band’s second album, “Celebration Rock, has brought with it bigger crowds and a new set of logistical concerns for such an intimate-punk venue style act. “A big thing for us as a two-piece is trying to fill that space on a stage that big, Prowse says of clubs they had played before, but never as the headliner. “That’s definitely part of the reason why we brought someone in to do lights, just to help give people something to see, especially when you’re a little farther from the audience. Normally when we tour, we’re playing intimate rooms, places that have 500 rather than 1,000 plus. It’s a bit of a learning curve for sure.

The master of suspense Sir Anthony Hopkins knows a thing or two about acting, but taking on one of his favorite filmmakers was another story altogether Why playing Alfred Hitchcock made him consider fleeing to South America FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES
Sir Anthony Hopkins has mastered everything from a cannibalistic genius to Richard Nixon. (On second thought, maybe those aren’t so different after all.) So it seemed almost inevitable that one day he might get the opportunity to portray someone he has admired since he was a teenager. “When I was 16 years of age I saw ‘Rear Window’ and then later the other films — ‘North by Northwest,’ ‘Vertigo’ was one of my favorites, and then ‘Psycho’ in 1960, Hopkins says of the work of filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. “I was one of the early viewers when they’d just released the movie in September 1960, he recalls. “I was knocked out by the power of the film, the terrifying aspect of the film. A Hitchcock movie was an event. And so is the movie “Hitchcock. Directed by Sacha Gervasi, the film depicts the making of the auteur’s most famous film, “Psycho, and its controversial release (the film was the first to feature a shot of a toilet). In order to step into the role, Hopkins wore layers of convincing prosthetics so that

he could look the part of a man with an inordinate craving for French pates and caviar. But it was Hitchcock’s distinctly droll accent that was key to the total transformation into this character. “He must have sounded [to American audiences] like he was a highly born aristocrat, which he wasn’t. He was a Cockney, so when he said — Hopkins slips into his Hitchcock impression — “‘Good evening. I have a story which
will terrify you absolutely,’ I could hear the London accent underneath that. ‌ I knew I had to get the voice as close as possible. [With the] incredible work that [makeup artist] Howard Berger did in creating the face for Hitchcock, we had to be very careful about me not ... vanishing behind it.â€? If Hopkins did vanish into the character of Hitchcock, it was only to the film’s benefit. But the highly vaunted actor, who was knighted in 1993 by Queen Elizabeth, was surprisingly anxious about his performance. “My insecurities started after the film because I wondered if it had gone OK,â€? he says. “I caught sight of myself on those video playbacks on the camera, where the director can watch the screen. I saw one of them and I thought I don’t want to see anymore because I wasn’t sure that I’d got it right. My insecurities were so deep that I just wanted to go and run away to Tierra del Fuego or somewhere like that.â€? HEIDI PATALANO

Backstage at the Victoria’s Secret show The lingerie extravaganza airs tonight on CBS We dodged blow-dryers to steal a few moments with key players as they were primping How do they get those ridiculous bodies? Intense workouts and cake control Lily Aldridge How did you get ready for the show? Health is my priority because I’m still nursing my daughter. I ate organic proteins and vegetables, and I’ve worked out a lot during naptime so I can still be with her. I’ve worked really, really hard, and I’m proud of what I’ve done and that I’m healthy. I hope I can be a good example for other women. What are your workouts like? I started six weeks after my daughter was born, and I did really hard training. Then two
months ago I started doing double training a day. I started doing Pilates twice a day. I worked with a ballerina, Mary Helen Bowers, and she taught me all the moves ballerinas do to get ready for a show. It’s all about long and lean, and we do that for an hour and a half a day, sometimes twice a day. I’m excited to not have to work out for a while now. What kind of underwear to do prefer? I like cute cotton undies.
Adriana Lima Models Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn reportedly ate pizza and KFC hours before the show. Would you want to scream if they ate in front of you, or join them? Ha! I’m a little bit older than them. But regardless of age, I’m really aware of the fact that you are what you eat. Are you saying they’re going to turn into a giant pizza or a chicken wing? Maybe not right now, but they’re going to see the results in the future when they get old. It depends what they eat, but they may have problems with cholesterol or diabetes, I don’t know. I just like to eat healthy. I have two children and I’m concerned about their health. I’m

What part of your body are you most proud of? My legs — always. They’re the easiest

All everyone wants to know is what you’re eating. [Right now] green juices I get from Pressed Juicery. It’s got spinach, kale, cucumber and lemon. Is that breakfast? I had eggs for breakfast with avocado. For lunch I’ll have some grilled chicken or grilled fish with spinach and a protein shake in between. What part of your body are you most proud of right now? I’m proud that my skin is good. What type of underwear do you prefer?
I really love wearing a G-string bodysuit. I think that can really give you an edge because no one knows what’s underneath. METRO

All ideological differences can be chalked up to hate It is high time that we all understand that racism is often based on insecurities, an incapacity to understand or tolerate someone who is different. The differences can be ethnic, religious, ideological or social. There is that difference that makes us uncomfortable, uneasy, upset, scared, aggressive or even violent. The basis may be an experience, teachings, dogma, etc. Now, most religious, social and/or ethnic groups use those to make themselves look and feel more valuable than “others.” So, most people have a degree of negative discrimination against certain people. Just be loving and peaceful and make your

Square was commendable, the main thing not being said is why in this day and age do we have human beings living on our streets? The sight of this man barefoot was heartbreaking. No person, regardless of their circumstances, should be in this situation. “What does a person deserve by being a person?” a question asked by the important philosopher Eli Siegel, founder of the education Aesthetic Realism, must be asked by all of us, including our elected officials. Every person deserves a decent place to live, clothes to keep them warm, food for their bodies and the ability to make a living through useful work. Until these things are a reality for every person, we are not truly civilized. MATTHEW D’AMICO, VIA E-MAIL

If Obama reviles Bush so much, why keep his tax cuts?
Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. If a close pal does something that you find to be offensive, don’t stew about it in silence. Air your grievance, allowing it to be resolved. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Be careful when getting involved with friends in a joint expenditure. Make sure that everyone pitches in equally when it comes time to foot the bill. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. In your heart, you’ll know what needs doing, yet you still might devote only a modicum of effort to getting it done. Your rewards will reflect your input. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Don’t be too quick to chastise co-workers if they aren’t pulling their weight. Their explanation might end up pointing to the example you’ve been setting. Aries March 21-April 19. This isn’t a particularly good day to take a gamble. But if for some reason you feel you need to, bet only on yourself and your abilities, in situations that you totally control. Taurus April 20-May 20. There are strong indications that you won’t be able to exercise the necessary resolve or willpower to overcome a tough situation. Both the flesh and the spirit must be willing.
Since President Obama took office, or more specifically, since Republicans were elected in 2010 to challenge his policies, how many times has the president played a game of chicken with the economy? The debt ceiling crisis is still a recent memory and in December 2010, President Obama said it is wrong to raise “taxes on anyone” in a bad economy. Now, even without the financial ripple effects of Hurricane Sandy expected to show up on this week’s Department of Labor jobs report, the economy is in worse shape than when Obama made the case for the extension of the Bush tax cuts. Besides, the president, who consistently blames “eight years of Bush” for the mess he inherited and has thus far failed to fix, wants to affirm 98 percent of Bush’s signature financial policy. Gemini May 21-June 20. You can be a well-organized person — but only when you choose, which isn’t likely to be the case currently. Your workspace could be cluttered with a lot of nondescript items. Cancer June 21-July 22. Disappointment is likely if you expect too much from people who are only casual acquaintances. Most will feel they don’t owe you a thing, and won’t want to go out of their way for you. Leo July 23-Aug. 22. If you have something going that is likely to ruffle feathers, don’t try to shift the blame for household friction onto anybody else but you. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Guard against inclinations toward the negative in terms of what you’re hoping to accomplish. Adopting a defeatist attitude will impede any progress you’re trying to make. Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 23. Your spending is likely to be strongly influenced by your most recent compatriots. If you’re pinching pennies or trying to save some money, don’t hang out with high rollers. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Best US ski resorts for your family While many ski resorts woo families with stellar ski schools, convenient lodging options, varied terrain for all skill levels and kid-pleasing on-mountain restaurants, a handful go above and beyond to keep kids of all ages happy — on and off the slopes Beaver Creek, Colo.
Okemo, Vt.
At Beaver Creek, children have their very own Buckaroo Express Gondola, which whisks them to a kid-friendly learning area at The Ranch. Take a break from ski-school at Marmot Maze, giant tubes buried in the snow to simulate rodent tunnels, or Haymaker Tubing Hill. Ski Girls Rock, for girls ages 7 to 16, is a skills- and confidencebuilding program inspired by Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn; the small group lessons are led by female instructors. Infants and toddlers spend time in the colorful nursery while their older siblings hit the slopes. Guests of all ages flock to the base of the ski mountain for cookies every day at 3 p.m.
Five beginner surface lifts at Okemo Mountain Resort help introduce never-ever skiers to gentle terrain; for parents who might want to teach their children on their own, three of the surface lifts are free to use anytime without a lift ticket. Young adult lift-ticket pricing gives teens a bit of a break off of adult prices, and children age 6 and younger ski for free. When it's time for a break, families flock to the Adventure Zone, with a mountain coaster, zipline, Snow Fun Playground and “Bigloo,” a tubing hill and big-air bag where guests ski or board down a ramp and land on a giant, inflated cushion.
Keystone, Colo. Kids ski free at Keystone Resort. That’s right — no charge for lift tickets for children 12 and younger, plus no blackout dates, as long as you have lodging booked for two nights or more in a
Skiing can be an enriching experience for your entire family.
Keystone Resort condominium or hotel. This is a boon for families who tend to travel during peak-season school vacations. Keystone Kidtopia events happen all season long, with parades, ice skating parties and tubing. Kids love to climb on and around the giant snow

hen you think of culinary tourism, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail are two that probably come to mind. But another upstart is gunning to join their ranks: Virginia. The state is becoming increasingly known for its oysters — and they are getting primed to get you to come and experience them. Virginia boasts seven oyster growing regions, three of which are located on Virginia’s
Oyster 101 Just as the locales of vineyards and vagaries of the growing seasons become part of the taste of wine (“terrior”), oysters develop unique flavors from the waters in which they are grown, known as their “merrior.” Savoring those different flavors is part of the fun and adventure of trying new oysters. Don’t miss the clean, briny and healthy Sewansecott oyster, grown by the H.M. Terry Company in the clean waters of Hog Island Bay. The Bay is surrounded by the Virginia Coastal Reserve, a collection of 14 undeveloped barrier islands and expanses of preserved salt marshes.

Eastern Shore. Although the remoteness of the Eastern Shore is one of its best qualities, there are plenty of resources for travelers when they get there. Two larger towns — Chincoteague to the north and Cape Charles to the south — have a host of quaint hotels, restaurants and art galleries that make a great base to go exploring the area’s many little towns and hamlets that are as interesting as some of their names: Nassawadox, Oyster, Onancock and Wachapreague.
Some wine with those oysters?
For foodies who love adventure
One of the highlights of the Eastern Shore is Chatham Vineyards, a working farm for four centuries with an 1818 federal brick mansion. A Cape Charles expedition company, Southeast Expeditions, offers the opportunity to kayak up a remote tidal creek, past oyster beds and historic farms, to the vineyard for wine tastings. Along the way, the guides describe the abundant wildlife and interesting history of the area.
If you have an adventuresome spirit and a true love of oysters, check out many of the oyster farms in the area. Although the tourist infrastructure for the oyster farms still is developing, many of the local oyster farms are welcoming to people interested in their product. We like Lynnhaven Oyster Company, Shooting Point Oyster Company, Cherrystone Aquafarms and JC Walker Brothers, Inc. ROB ROBINSON
The historic Bayford Oyster Shucking House is one of the last remaining shucking houses on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
Virginia oysters: Nature and nurture One reason Eastern Shore oysters are so good is because of the purity of the water. Parts of the shore are designated as a
United Nations Biosphere Reserve and, according to the Nature Conservancy (which has taken a role in preserving the area), it contains the longest expanse of coastal wilderness left on the eastern seaboard.

Dickey
Dickey deal appears to be getting closer There appear to be many suitors for Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey at this week’s winter meetings, it just remains to be seen whether the team likes any of the possible offers. Dickey, who just won the NL Cy Young Award last month, will make just $5 million in 2013, making him a desirable pitcher if a team believes the knuckleballer’s 2012 season was legitimate. General manager Sandy Alderson said he planned to meet with multiple teams showing interest in Dickey yesterday afternoon. “What we’ve tried to say to ourselves is that we have to get back difference makers,” Alderson told reporters in Nashville, Tenn. yesterday. In the news Ruppert to Hall Good things come to those who wait. Unfortunately, in Jacob Ruppert’s case, it came 73 years too late. Ruppert, who owned the Yankees from 1915 until his death in 1939, was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday by the pre-integration era committee. The team won seven World Series during his ownership, but he is also remembered for purchasing Babe Ruth from Boston.

Greg McElroy, left, Mark Sanchez, center, and Tim Tebow, right, are all in the mix to start next weekend in Jacksonville.
WAITING GAME Ryan still won’t name a starter for this weekend Rex: ‘I have three guys I’m confident in’ Tebow will be monitored for readiness this week
After weeks of saying Mark Sanchez gave the Jets the best chance to win, head coach Rex Ryan may be changing his tune. Five times this season the Jets have lost by 17 points or more, but with his team down 3-0 late in the third quarter, Ryan finally made the drastic move to replace Sanchez with backup quarterback Greg McElroy. A permanent move to McElroy has yet to come, however.
“Right now, I definitely need a little more time to make that decision,” Ryan said. “I’m comfortable and confident with all three quarterbacks. I think all three guys now have proven they can win in this league — with Greg at the end of [Sunday’s] game, Mark with his history here and Tim [Tebow] last year. [I have] three guys that I’m confident in.” When the Jets traded with the Broncos in March to ac-

what the trainers and doctors are telling me and hear from the coaches,” Tebow said yesterday during a conference call with the media. “We’ll just take it as it comes.” Ryan said Tebow was well enough to play Sunday, but he wanted to give him at least another week and that the team “will monitor his situation” with the cracked ribs. McElroy thrust into spotlight It was a Monday just like any other for Jets quarterback Greg McElroy, who was No. 3 on the team’s roster this time last week. No matter that he might be making his first NFL start in six days, McElroy still went to the team facility, had breakfast, worked out and watched film from Sun-
quire Tebow, the media and much of the fan base began to speculate that Tebow and Sanchez would be engaged in a quarterback battle. But with Tebow inactive on Sunday due to two cracked ribs, it was McElroy who the Jets turned to. Now with Tebow nearing health, a dream situation emerges for him this weekend as the Jets play in his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla. “I’m sure we’ll get into that later on in the week and see

day’s game. And for the first time in his NFL career, the game film included himself. In speaking to the media yesterday, head coach Rex Ryan said no decision is forthcoming on the starter for this weekend’s game in Jacksonville. If McElroy knows something, he isn’t tipping his hand. “No, no indication — no information at this point obviously. That’s going to come, I assume, in the next
few days. I know coach Ryan and [offensive coordinator Tony] Sparano and everybody involved, they’re going to make the decision that’s best for the team,” McElroy said. “I think we all feel comfortable with their decision and we all are looking forward to what the decision may be.” For the first time in his NFL career, McElroy heads into the week with the possibility of starting. A-Rod vacates hot corner Rodriguez to miss much of first half of season after left hip surgery Leaves Yankees with gaping hole to fill at third base in ’13 Metro takes a look at free-agent market Could Youkilis be next Sox star to join Bombers? The Yankees may finally have an answer for why Alex Rodriguez struggled so much during the postseason. Now they just need to find an answer for an opening at third base. The team announced yesterday that Rodriguez will undergo left hip surgery in January to repair a torn labrum, bone impingement and correct a cyst. It is the opposite hip from the one he underwent surgery on in 2009. They expect him to be out for four to six months, taking him well into the regular season. With Rodriguez already a question mark coming off a nonexistent postseason performance, the team now has an even bigger hole to fill at third base. Cashman met with media at the winter baseball meetings yesterday and said they were “not going to overreactâ€? to Rodriguez’s loss. When the team lost Aaron Boone heading into the
2004 season, George Steinbrenner pulled the trigger on the megadeal that brought Rodriguez to the Bronx. Steinbrenner’s son, Hal, is not expected to do anything so large. The team plans to keep the payroll at $189 million for 2014. The team has Eduardo Nunez under contract, but Cashman said they did not view him as a third baseman. They also could use Jayson Nix, though he has never been viewed as anything more than a stopgap measure at the position. That means they will likely be looking at the free-agent market. It isn’t a deep market, but it could provide options for the team going forward. The list is led by names like Kevin Youkilis, Mark Reynolds, Stephen Drew and Jeff Keppinger. Metro takes a look at who is most viable for the Yankees.
Kevin Youkilis
2012 stats: .235, 19 HR, 60 RBIs (Boston/Chicago) Our take: Every Yankees fan knows Youkilis, but he’s definitely the best free agent available at the hot corner. New York won’t hesitate to bring in a Boston guy (Johnny Damon, Wade Boggs, etc.), but they will hesitate to bring in a 33year-old on the decline who wants a multiyear deal. He is the best defender on the list.
Mark Reynolds
2012 stats: .221, 23 HR, 69 RBIs (Baltimore) Our take: You know what you are getting with Reynolds — big power and big strikeouts. He led his league in whiffs four of the past five seasons. He’s also averaging 34 homers over a 162-game season for his career. He only played 135 games last year with an oblique injury, and he’ll want a big, multiyear deal.
Stephen Drew
2012 stats: .223, 7 HR, 28 RBIs (Arizona/Oakland) Our take: The former super prospect is finally a free agent, and chances are this is not the market he, or his agent, were expecting back in 2008 when he hit 21 homers and 44 doubles. Drew, 29, has plummeted back to earth. Last year, he was a shell of his former self. On the bright side, you’d be buying low on a great talent.
Je Keppinger
2012 stats: .325, 9 HR, 40 RBIs (Tampa Bay) Our take: Even before Rodriguez’s injury, the Yankees were reportedly interested in the former Red, Ray and a half dozen or so other teams. Keppinger, 32, is a solid defensive player and can play anywhere in the field. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal last year, and his contract would likely be similar for 2013.
