NYCLU blasts police presence in city schools METRO FILE
Almost 900 arrests occurred in New York City public schools during the 2011-12 school year, according to New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman in a New York Times column blasting the NYPD’s School Safety Division for what she sees as an outsized and unwarranted presence in schools. “School Safety operates in schools without a mandate for officers to follow the leadership and direction of the educators,” Lieberman said in an interview yesterday. “There’s a 5,000-person force sent into the schools

with police tactics and strategies as their first line of approach, which is often incompatible with what the educa-
tors would do.” Marge Feinberg at the Department of Education said that it is “absolutely not” accu-
rate that NYC public-school officials do not have authority over on-site police officers. In one example of aggres-
sive in-school policing, Lieberman said, a 14-year-old South Bronx student named Natalie reportedly refused to clear her area after lunch and tried to push back when a male officer grabbed her from behind. The officer dragged the ninth-grader out of the cafeteria, threw her to the ground and cuffed her. Lieberman said that after this encounter, Natalie dreaded going to school, started cutting class and ultimately had to repeat an entire grade. Feinberg said violent crime is down nearly 40 percent since 2001. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

City bonds popular again New York, which is borrowing $850 million as soon as next week, has seen its bonds rally the most in five years on bets that federal aid and better-than-projected Wall Street earnings will help the most-populous U.S. city absorb Hurricane Sandy’s recovery costs. Almost six weeks since Hurricane Sandy, there’s no letup in demand for New York bonds as municipal yields reach 47-year lows. BLOOMBERG

Lower Manhattan residents still struggle to find stable homes after Sandy Shut out of buildings for more than a month, some want to break leases MILES DIXON/METRO
Obama seeks $60B for relief President Barack Obama asked Congress on Friday to approve a $60.4 billion aid package to help East Coast states rebuild after Superstorm Sandy, well short of their initial requests. Officials from storm-battered New York, New Jersey and Connecticut had said they needed at least $82 billion combined to make emergency repairs and upgrade infrastructure. Lawmakers said they expect Obama will seek more aid as the extent of Sandy’s damage becomes clearer. BLOOMBERG

NYC bike sharing delayed again
U.S. senators Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Robert Menendez, DN.J., are proposing a special tax credit for business owners affected by Hurricane Sandy. Taxpayers would be able to deduct cleaning expenses and there would be an increase to how much can be deducted from charitable donations.
The rollout of New York City’s bicycle-sharing program, to be the largest in the United States, will be delayed for two months and initially scaled back because of damage that bikes and docking systems sustained during Hurricane Sandy. The city will push back the debut of Citi Bike, its self-service short-term bike rental program, to May 2013 from March in order to replace and refurbish many of the electrical components that were exposed to floodwater, officials said. Homeless in the city Some Lower Manhattan residents are still struggling with the effects of Superstorm Sandy, shut out of their homes for more than a month or longer. Tenants at 1 West Street weren’t able to get back into their building for 33 days after the storm, and 2 Gold Street leases have been suspended until March 1, according to one 2 Gold resident. “I think the hardest part was not getting a clear timeline from the management company,” said 1 West tenant Cathleen Cooper. Several 1 West tenants complained that they got information piecemeal from management, which made securing accommodations more expensive. “They weren’t forthright with us,” another renter complained. “We had to make housing arrangements on a week-to-week basis.” Ben Shuman, 1 West’s property manager, said they did the best they could. “We moved heaven and earth to get the residents back, and to get them back safely,” Shuman said. “We passed along the information that we had as

High-priced 1 West Street and 2 Gold Street are among the most prestigious residential apartment buildings in the Financial District, with studios renting for more than $2,800 a month and one-bedroom apartments at more than $3,500. Residents at 1 West complained at the weekend that elevators were still not work-

ing, that power outages still happened and that there were noxious smells in the building. City tests showed there was no danger to residents. One resident of 1 West said he spent more than $9,000 on hotel rooms in November. “They kept pushing back the date when we could return. I had to book hotel rooms, sometimes at just three to four hours’ notice, so the charges were exorbitant.”
Burden said that the amount of time is not specified, calling it a “rule of reason.” Some of the 1 West tenants wondered if they had time to see if building conditions improved, which Burden said could work.
it came in, at least once a day every day.” Shuman said part of the problem was that early assessments of the damage were relatively positive. Now some residents want to take advantage of a clause in their contracts that allows them to break their lease if kept out of their apartments for more than 30 days. The option to break a lease is part of the standard Real Estate Board of New York lease and reads that termination is effective as of the casualty, he said. “If the elevator doesn’t work occasionally, that’s not a reason to terminate,” he said. “But gas and things like that make sense.”

AVOID SURGERY Our solution... Our office uses Hyalgan®
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), there are about 270,000 knee replacement operations performed each year in the United States. This image depicts the procedure.
Want to avoid knee surgery?
Why do knee injections often fail? What’s different about our procedure?
Our program could be the solution you are looking for. Do your knees hurt when going up or down the stairs? Do you frequently take medication for knee pain? Have you tried physical therapy? Do the activities you enjoy cause pain in your knees? Have you had cortisone or other injections to the knee that have not worked?
Most doctors today do one of three things: 1) They perform “blind injections” (an injection done without imaging guidance). 2) They use antiquated equipment from as far back as 2001, even in some of the largest hospitals in New York. 3) They use Cortisone, which can have side effects.
Precision is the difference. FACT: 30-40% of blind injections result in needle misplacement. [1]With this much inaccuracy, it’s no wonder most people never find relief.
If you answered YES to any of these questions, keep reading... metro new york
When will I feel results? Most feel an immediate reduction in pain and can return to normal activities in weeks.
Yes, most insurances will cover this treatment*. We work with Medicare: GHI PPO
Are you afraid that your knee pain is only going to get worse?

Hyaluronic acid (Hyalgan®) is a natural substance extracted from rooster combs and purified to mimic the lubricating substances that occur naturally in the joint, called synovial fluid. In patients with osteoarthritis, synovial fluid “dries up”, allowing the cartilage of the joint to rub against itself and other surfaces. This causes pain, inflammation, and usually damage to the joint. Think of this treatment like oiling a rigid, squeaky door hinge.
Will my insurance cover this treatment?

Stones ‘do bad things’ in BK Fifty years after they started rocking, world’s most famous band played only one show in NYC Newark shows also on schedule during brief tour DON EMMERT/AFP/GETTY IMAGES
Fifty years since their first London jam sessions, the Rolling Stones kicked off the U.S. leg of a brief anniversary tour Saturday with a vibrant New York City show that belied their years — wrinkles and nostalgia aside. Drummers wearing gorilla masks warmed up the crowd packed into Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as black-clad women swung their long tresses in rhythm. Mick Jagger pranced, shimmied and howled his way through the two-and-a-half hour show, pausing to reminisce about the band’s history and its first New York concert at Carnegie Hall in 1964. For a group whose early years were punctuated by quarrels and occasional brushes with the law, the biggest controversy ahead of Saturday’s show was the price of seats — up to $800, and as

celebrities heaping praise on the band. “They’re great songs to do bad things to,” said actor Johnny Depp. The Stones — average age 68 — ripped through 20 hits that began with “Get Off of My Cloud” and closed with “Sympathy for the Devil.” REUTERS
The band’s last major tour was in 2007 and the latest reunion almost didn't happen, owing in part to a spat between Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards over comments Richards made about the singer in a 2010 autobiography. Richards joked in a recent interview: “We can’t get divorced — we're doing it for the kids.” The Stones started their brief diamond jubilee tour in London and are due to play twice in Newark, N.J. NJ’s Booker to decide future of political career by year’s end Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, who said he’s considering a challenge to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie next year or a possible run for U.S. Senate in 2014, plans to decide on his future in the next two weeks. A decision “has got to be within the next two weeks or so because, especially in New Jersey, there’s a lot of good candidates for governor on the Democratic side,” said Booker, 43, a rising Democratic star with a national following. He made the comments yesterday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Booker, mayor of New Jersey’s largest city since 2006, trailed Christie by 18 percentage points in a potential matchup, according to a Quinnipiac University poll last month that showed the mayor was the strongest Democratic challenger. He said he wants to remain part of the Democrats’ “push forward,” either as a candidate or supporter. “I’m really thinking about both offices right now and which one can I better serve on the issues I’m passionate about,” Booker said. Christie, who unseated incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine in 2009, climbed to a record approval rating of 77 percent as Democrats and independents gave him high marks for his storm response, according to a Nov. 26 PublicMind poll. He announced his pursuit of a second term the same day, saying he wanted to finish the job of leading the storm recovery.

The tunnel was partially reopened on Nov. 19, although not to trucks. Bloomberg slams Congress in op-ed Mayor Michael Bloomberg
spoke out this weekend in an editorial in the Daily News against a proposal in Congress to eliminate state and local tax deductions from federal tax returns, a move he said is especially hard on New York City residents. City and local taxes are significantly higher in New York City than most other American cities. “We already pay far more in federal taxes than we get back in services,” Bloomberg said, noting that state and local taxes fund services not adequately covered by the federal government. According to Bloomberg, eliminating the state and local deduction would cost the average married couple making $160,000 in combined income an additional $4,616 in federal taxes. METRO/DT

GOP: We have no choice but to give in on tax rates for wealthy

Conservatives have no choice but to give into White House demands on higher tax rates for the wealthy, if the fiscal debate is to move to their main goal, overhauling big government benefits programs, several Republicans said yesterday. “There is a growing group of folks who are ... realizing that we don’t have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year-end,”
Dems insist President Barack Obama and fellow Democrats are insisting that the tax break expire for families with incomes above $250,000 and remain in place for other taxpayers. They are wagering that if all the tax cuts expire, the public will blame Republicans for raising taxes on the middle class.

Egypt’s main opposition coalition rejected yesterday Islamist President Mohamed Mursi’s plan for a constitutional referendum this week, saying it risked dragging the country into “violent confrontation.” Mursi’s decision on Saturday to retract a decree awarding himself wide powers failed to placate opponents who accused him of plunging Egypt deeper into crisis by refusing to postpone the vote on a constitution shaped by Islamists.

I’m an embarrassment to the Guatemalan government and I’m jeopardizing their relationship with Belize.” The two neighboring countries in Central America are locked in a decades-long territorial dispute, and voters in 2013 will decide in a referendum how to proceed. Responding to McAfee’s remarks, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman said U.S. citizens in foreign countries are subject to local laws. Officials can only

Q&A
McAfee’s biographer Joshua Davis, author of “John McAfee’s Last Stand,” spent months trying to understand this enigmatic character and told us about the role of sex, drugs and John Wayne. How does a successful businessman turn into a fugitive? What made him successful is causing the problems now. He had a keen perception of threats. Before McAfee, nobody knew much about computer viruses and he was the one who convinced us to be afraid of them. He told me he exaggerated the threat to enrich himself. He loved social engineering – controlling people’s habits and ideas. Why did he move to Belize? By the late 2000s, he felt like downsizing his life. The financial crisis hit him hard – at one point he claimed to be down to his last $4 million, but he told me that was an exaggeration. People were constantly suing him,
McAfee
Friends forever? Are you guys still close? He e-mailed me at the weekend, but he’s not very happy with me. He thinks I’m telling people he’s crazy, when he doesn’t think he is. which would be harder in Belize. He also wanted to lead a more simple life, and he was attracted by the wildness and raw nature of Central America. He started small businesses – an antibiotic research company, a taxi business, a bar and cafe. It was like a rich man’s retirement. How did the trouble start? He became fascinated by the underworld and one bar in particu-
lar, that was also a brothel. He would go and interview prostitutes, and although he claimed not to be sleeping with any, eventually he was in a relationship with at least one. He became friendly with the bar owner – a pimp. That experience led him to understand more of how margins of Belizean society functioned; he found this little town was the most corrupt village on the planet. He was vehemently anti-drugs and decided to clean up this village of Carmelita, a town of 1,600 people. He decided this would be no problem for such a smart guy – he built a jail and went armed into people’s homes telling them what to do. A villager said he would come in acting like John Wayne. Are you surprised he is wanted in connection with murder? It’s totally natural that police want to question him. He had long disputes over the dogs [belonging to murdered neighbor Gregory Faull] that were poisoned the night of the murder. McAfee is full of contradictions, says he is anti-drinking but buys a bar. The police raided him because he was acting crazy – he imported a lot of weapons into Belize. MWN

The low-down on law school
New book preps potential students for the demands of law school and landing a good job after graduation
I
n addition to graduating from Harvard Law and practicing in New York City, Lisa Jones Johnson has found time to become a published mystery novelist and screenwriter. She recently coauthored “So You Want to Be a Lawyer: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Into and Succeeding in Law School,” and is hoping her narrative chops will set this how-to career book apart from the rest.
This is a whole other level of analytical writing. What’s the most common misconception people have about law school?
That law school is like practicing law. Law school is very academic. You read and write a lot. You go back and forth with professors and colleagues about big concepts and ideas. Practicing law is very different. It’s very detailed. Most junior lawyers are thrown right into drafting contracts. I think schools need to add some practical contract-drafting courses. You need to know the theory behind it, but you need to know the building blocks of drafting as well.
What surprised you about law school?
The level of reading and very specific analytic writing felt daunting at first. We try to prepare people for that. Everybody in college has written papers.

Top jobs for 2013
Expect a lot of reading and analytic writing in law school.
choosing a law school?
For me, No. 1 is the prestige factor — the alumni network. Your first jobs are likely going to come from those contacts. If you have the grades and if you’re fortunate enough to get in, you want to go to a top-tier school. If you can’t get into that kind of school, the question you need to ask becomes very simple: Can I actually get a job after I finish? There are a lot of accredited schools out there that don’t really place their graduates. Do they have a placement office? Will they actively make sure that I get a job? BRUCE WALSH

Ivy League cracks down on students Harvard and Cornell universities have joined Yale University and Dartmouth College in cracking down on such out-of-control behaviors as drinking, hazing and sexual harassment, which endanger students and tarnish Ivy League reputations. Harvard faculty voted last month to require registration of parties and ban drinking games, and Cornell ordered fraternities to have live-in advisers. This fall, Dartmouth began security checks at Greek houses and Princeton University banned freshmen from joining them. The moves are the latest effort to regulate campus behavior since rules controlling students were abolished in the 1960s. Disobedience crested last year for Ivy League schools. A Dartmouth hazing article detailed rituals involving bodily

On Friday, Linds was all smiles in the front row at New York City’s Jingle Ball concert during The Wanted’s performance. She’s rumored to be dating a member of the boy band, Max George, who more or less confirmed some aspect of some relationship: “We can stay out of trouble and keep her out of trouble,” he tells PerezHilton.com. “She can party just as hard as us. She’s a great girl.” All “great girl” comments aside, we’ve endorsed fiber breakfast bars more enthusiastically than that. And it seems like Lohan might be less happy than she’s letting on for the cameras — from what Metro heard at the Jingle Ball, she was allegedly seen crying in a bathroom backstage. (Then again, who doesn’t have a good bathroom cry at holiday parties?) Not to pile it on, but yesterday TMZ reported that Lohan’s finances are in such bad shape

Metro caught up with celebs backstage at Z100’s Jingle Ball Friday night at Madison Square Garden: 1: We always see Jason Mraz in a hat, so we had to ask — how many does he own? “I think in my lifetime I’ve had several hundred, but I tend to pass them on,” he told us. “I usually wear them [until they’re] a little frayed, a little sweaty, a little smelly.”

2: Olympic gold medal gymnast Jordyn Wieber told us her new Olympic rings wrist tattoo “hurt really bad but was so worth it.” 3: The boys from One Direction said they haven’t been to the city’s new One Direction fan store just yet.

4: Ne-Yo said he wants to plant a kiss on Nicki Minaj this New Year’s Eve. 5: Cher Lloyd’s strangest gift? “I used to get a lot of socks,” the singer said.

‘DEAD’
N
Two-time Tony award-winner Norbert Leo Butz joins Katie Holmes in this dark comedy about a homecoming riddled with secrets
orbert Leo Butz easily steals the show with his turn in “Dead Accounts, a dark comedy that follows his character’s sudden return from NYC to the Midwest — an appearance shrouded in mystery, wads of cash and a rumpled Armani suit. His character, Jack, is highstrung and neurotic, desperately putting forth grandiose insights about life as would a man who’s just been revived from the brink of death — or one who’s still in the process of staving it off. Most of the other actors have subtle, supporting roles, but they play them with a quiet

conviction that’s much-needed to balance Jack’s anxious energy. Several scenes are devised so that the characters who aren’t speaking are the ones saying the most — and times when everyone’s talking the most seem to reveal the least. Katie Holmes returns to
Broadway in the second-most pivotal position as Lorna. She is Jack’s opposite, a mousy younger sister who still lives with their parents and espouses old-fashioned values that Jack has seemingly abandoned — like honesty and faith. Holmes is endearing as always, although it’s hard to say almost any actress couldn’t do as much of the same with the part — which also goes for Jack’s wife, Jenny, played with warmth but not depth by Judy Greer. Director Jack O’Brien, however, would have been hard-pressed to fill the stage with any presence that could pull the focus from the bustling, hustling
Norbert Leo Butz and Katie Holmes star in “Dead Accounts.
Butz. Playwright Theresa Rebeck creates entertaining and quickpaced dialogue, but one aspect that falls a little short is the momentum of the plot. A big reveal comes right before intermission, but it takes getting there to finally step into
the play’s heart. A series of twists and turns follows in Act II, dissecting the key players as we also watch them grow like the overtly symbolic oaks and elms in the space beyond the deck outside of this conflicted childhood home. Some may find that the res-
olutions — the few that exist — aren’t quite worth the windup; however, they might come to realize, like Jack, that not everything that has value in life is about the payoff. T. MICHELLE MURPHY

“Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors,” the second standalone solo album from Big Boi, may raise a few questions about a certain Southern musician. No, we’re not talking about his erstwhile OutKast collaborator Andre 3000, but Tom Petty. The first lines of a track with the title spelled out “Thom Pettie” feature an impossibly deep voice chanting, “Thom Pettie that hoe/Free Falling, we out all night.” We had to get to the bottom of the meaning before any real vicious lies or dangerous rumors spread. If you’re going out for the wild night and you never know where the night is going to take you, we call it free falling. That’s called Tom Pettying! If you Tom Petty for the night, you don’t know where you’re going to end up at in the morning. Is this maybe something you’re doing to create a dialogue with him? Would you ever collaborate with him?
Hell yeah! If it was time to do it, then yeah. I’ll work with anybody as long as it’s fun. Who else are you trying to work with?
I really just want to work with Kate Bush. That’s the only person that I haven’t worked with that I want to work with. How did the collaboration with
Q&A What is the most vicious lie or dangerous rumor that you’ve heard about yourself? I guess the main thing is the division of OutKast. It’s a vicious lie and a dangerous rumor, and people have been saying it for years, and there’s never been a problem with me and my partner. It’s hard to believe that “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” came out 10 years ago. Does it feel like 10 years? Not at all. the bands Phantogram and Little Dragon work? Did either of you come into the studio with ideas you wanted to use?
Not really. It really all starts with the music. We started recording and it was like an experimental process. We started with sound, from scratch, and let the song just build from there. I was looking at the liner notes, and there is so much going on within these tracks. I was surprised to see that there’s only one sample on the whole album.
Yeah, everything’s all original. We don’t really use samples like that, unless it’s something that we blatantly use or it’s
something we really want to rhyme over. We keep it all original music, because those are the best, freshest grooves. You can’t find a new groove using an old song. This album is lyrically heavier than we’re used to hearing from you. There’s quite a bit of introspection in a song like “She Hates Me” — and then in the song “Tremendous Damage,” you’re dealing a lot with the loss of your dad, who was a Vietnam vet.
I guess it just comes with age and maturity. And you’ve just got to be honest in the music, so people can feel what you’re coming through. As far as the songs about my dad, I’m still in a period of mourning and it’s therapy for me to write songs like that. To give that type of insight and to really let the listener into your soul, and into your mind like that, you have to make yourself vulnerable. “Tremendous Damage” is [about] something when you take a hit like that in life, whether it be in a relationship or losing a loved one, it’s something that’s so traumatic, people sometimes don’t come back from it, from a point of mourning to come back to a regular sane mind and I’ve been battling through it, and through the man upstairs, I’ve made it through. Box office
Bond movie ‘Skyfall’ beats ‘Lincoln’ at box office James Bond showed remarkable staying power at the box office as the latest installment of the spy series, “Skyfall,” collected $11 million in its fifth week in U.S. and Canadian movie theaters to top Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2,” the final installment of the blockbuster vampire series. “Skyfall,” the 23rd film in the series featuring Agent 007, also captured the box office when it first opened on Nov. 2. Distributed by Sony’s Hollywood studio, it is already the best-selling movie in the 49-year-old series, and this weekend
became the highest-grossing movie in Sony Pictures’ history with $918 million in ticket sales worldwide. “Skyfall” has brought in nearly $262 million from the United States and Canada, according to the movie tracking site Hollywood.com. Family flick “Rise of the Guardians” finished second with $10.5 million, working its way toward becoming the season’s primary family hit in its third week.
Daniel Craig is 007.
“Breaking Dawn - Part 2,” which led the box office for the past three weekends, tallied $9.2 million. The fivemovie series, released by Lions Gate Entertainment, is based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling book about young vampire love and has collected more than $1.3 billion in overall domestic ticket sales. “Lincoln,” produced by Dreamworks and released by Walt Disney, chronicles the 16th president’s successful fight to pass a constitutional amendment outlawing slavery. It had ticket sales of $9.1 million, according to studio estimates provided by the box office division of Hollywood.com. Fox’s “Life of Pi” rounded out the top five with $8.3 million. Hollywood studios shied away from scheduling major movies this weekend, steering clear of the expected blockbuster “The Hobbit,” which Warner Brothers will release on Dec. 14. REUTERS

he holidays are a busy time for therapists. People who are lonely, unemployed, divorcing, grieving and otherwise struggling often feel guilty that they can’t take on a “’tis the season to be jolly attitude. Nobody puts pictures of frowning families on their Christmas cards. But it doesn’t mean that people aren’t struggling. Children of newly divorced families often feel the separation more profoundly as they are shuffled between parents, while the parents themselves may feel sad and lonely when their children are with the former spouse. Similarly, the holidays can accentuate the grief of anyone who has recently lost a loved one with whom they have celebrated in the past. Some people would rather be alone or with friends than gather around the tree or light the menorah with difficult and/or abusive relatives. And of course, the unemployed and underemployed feel

Refrain from judging your feelings. Telling yourself that you “should feel happy when you don’t will only make you feel worse. Observe your feelings with equanimity and remember that feelings aren’t facts and that they usually pass. Volunteer. Working in a soup kitchen, delivering meals to homebound elderly and engaging in other forms of service will probably make you feel good and put life in perspective. Spend time with caring friends who lift your spirits. Remember that things can change. Just because the holidays are challenging this year doesn’t mean they will always be this way. Count your blessings. We all have something for which to be grateful — our health, a job, a friend, food in the fridge, a roof over our heads — if we look hard enough. Embrace the spiritual and humanitarian aspects of the holidays that often get lost in the commercialism.
Consult a pscyhotherapist if you’ve been feeling down for awhile.

When drugs for depression fail, talking therapies help LONDON. Patients with depres-
sion who fail to benefit from antidepressant drugs may do better if they are also treated with a type of “talking psychotherapy called CBT, according to new research published on Friday. In the first large-scale trial to test the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, alongside medication for depression, scientists said they found that the combination works where drug treatment alone fails. Nicola Wiles of Bristol University’s school of social and community medicine, who led the study, said the findings underline the need to increase the availability of therapy for depressed patients. “While there have been ini-

The results, published in The Lancet medical journal, showed that after six months, 46 percent of those who got CBT as well as their usual care had improved — reporting at least a 50 percent reduction in their depressive symptoms. This compared to 22 percent of those who did not get CBT. Patients treated with CBT, which involves talking through behaviors and ways of thinking with a trained psychotherapist or psychologist, were also more likely to go into remission and have fewer symptoms of anxiety, the researchers said. Similar effects were reported at 12 months. REUTERS

How to survive the company holiday party
T
he office party is a notorious minefield of drunk co-workers and gossipy conversations. Here’s how to have fun and look good the next day.
Feel free to drink — in moderation See what everyone else is doing. If there are drinks available, drink! If you’re worried about drinking too much too fast, make a point of eating before and during the party, and sip a glass of water between every alcoholic drink. less you have a prior commitment, there’s no reason not to attend. It’s important to participate in these kinds of activities outside of work. If you haven’t already been asked, talk to your manager or boss about volunteering to help organize the party. You’ll work on a rare project that probably has nothing to do with your normal job and get the chance to show off skills that may normally be ignored, such as budgeting, organizing and being creative. At the very least, you’ll score some brownie points for lessening their workload at a stressful time of the year. Don’t vent: Talk about work if it comes up, but don’t use the casual setting as an opportunity to chat about the raise you’ve been wanting or to take charge of a project that’s up for grabs.

Happy holidays! We’re all insane RE: “PAGING GLORIA STEINEM?” (METRO, DEC. 3) The
millionaire matchmaker thinks men are getting weaker; is that in relation to the growing strength of women who are becoming more equal? If so, her idea implies men should keep getting stronger to make sure women are never equal — which is not rational. Why would anyone care what she thinks anyway? Her job is to match attractive women with rich guys; how many years does it take to get a doctorate in her field? The back-and-forth on this is silly because everyone is a person, and everyone is flipping crazy. Men want pure, caring, homemaking, dirty girls and women seem to want caring, funny, alpha
jerks. No matter what plumbing you have you are insane, and trying to find out which gender is more insane is even more insane. It’s the holiday season: How about we debate how to feed all the hungry instead? DOUGLAS BROWN II, VIA E-MAIL
The best things tax returns can buy When the richest Americans have a family emergency, they can jump on a plane or their own private jet, write a check if needed and be there immediately, without wondering what kind of hole this will create in their budget. My family is far: my aging parents in France, my children working in far away places. So for me the “fiscal cliff” means $2,000 lost, two
trips to be with my 85-yearold dad, money saved to be with my children if they need me. I am not jealous, I just love my parents and my children as much as rich folks do. CHRISTIANE GEISLER, VIA E-MAIL
EU needs to get its priorities straight The Middle East is in great turmoil. Iran is continuing its development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental missiles to deliver them. Forty thousand people have been killed in Syria, heavy fighting continues there, and the threat of poison gas, a weapon of mass destruction is very real. Egypt is on the verge of a civil war. Terrorists are running amuck in Iraq, Jordan, Yemen and Lebanon. With all this going on, what

Politics never solved anything If we truly want to solve our financial and personal problems as a nation, we must work together and stop the blame game. Really, both parties in power right now are being stubborn and sticking to the party agenda, unable/unwilling to work together. Is our party truly more important than our need to resolve our issues? Lets be adults not stubborn children and move on, not the if only’s game — we all want a better for ourselves and families. RIC HOPKINS, VIA E-MAIL

PLAYOFF PUSH?
Jets begin must-win final four games with victory over Jags Sanchez uneven, but effective late Defense plays big, nabs late pick to seal win An ugly if efficient 17-10 road win by the Jets means that somehow, at 6-7, they are still in the playoff hunt. Mark Sanchez got the start, as expected, but it was the old formula of ground and pound that got the win. Bilal Powell and Shonn Greene combined for 39 carries and 156 yards. Each had a touchdown as well. Three sacks and two interceptions got it done on defense. The Jets now have two straight wins for the first time this season and the first time since last Dec. 11. METRO
What went right ...
1
QB quagmire — Last week, Greg McElroy put in a solid performance for the benched Sanchez and got rewarded by being inactive in Jacksonville. It wasn’t as bad as last week for Sanchez, but it was still a mixed bag. He threw no picks, but had a fumble.
2
Formula 2009 — For a second straight week, the defense was called upon to carry the team, as the offense struggled to put it mildly in the first half. The Jaguars were limited to 291 yards in the game with a Bart Scott interception in the first quarter proving to be a pivotal play in the game. On the other side of the ball, they ran effectively, especially in the second half.
3
When it counts — Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano went for the win in the fourth quarter, which was nice to see despite a conservative game plan. Sanchez was just 12-of-19 in the game, but he stepped up when it mattered. Sanchez found Jeff Cumberland on a 37-yard pass over the middle on third-and-8 with 2:56 to play. It milked crucial time off the clock. KRISTIAN DYER
