HIV-positive and struggling with bills Hand to mouth. Every month, Wanda Hernandez decides which bills she can pay. Having lived for 15 years with HIV, Hernandez, 50, has chronic pain block-

ing her from work. But the largest chunk of her disability assistance goes toward the $1,000 rent for her one-bedroom in the Bronx, near Arthur Avenue. “I have to choose between paying my Con Ed or my rent, basically,” she told Metro. She is one of many HIV patients who have to use

more than 70 percent of their disability income on rent, according to a new study by VOCAL-NY, which helps people with HIV/ AIDS, and the Urban Justice Center’s Community Development Project. As a result, thousands become homeless, unable to afford rent checks, the report said. Study organizers say

that a state bill would protect them by ensuring they pay no more than 30 percent of their disability income toward affordable housing. “Those living with HIV/ AIDS should not have to choose between their medication and housing,” Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez said. After rent, Hernandez

has about $340 monthly, she said, or about $12 a day — scraped together for food, utilities and unexpected expenses. Con Ed shut off her lights last week, she said, and she faces a hearing this Tuesday about possible eviction.

Village murder highlights increase in city anti-gay crimes “You wanna die right here?” The man had been following Marc Carson and a companion down a street of Friday-night revelers, police said, hurling antigay slurs and eventually pulling out a gun. But this was the West Village, blocks from the birthplace of the gay rights movement — a safe place if ever there was one, and friends told the New York Times that 32-year-old Carson was out and proud. “Is that your boy?” the gunman asked Carson. “Yes,” Carson replied. The man shot him in the face. The brazen murder has stunned a city known for its tolerance. Crisis. Training push fails to halt military sex assault scandal Under pressure to fight sexual assault, the U.S. armed forces in recent years rolled out education programs about proper sexual conduct through methods like role-playing and video games. The increase in education has nevertheless failed to prevent what the nation’s top general called last week “a crisis after the Pentagon reported a 37 percent jump in the estimated number of sexual assault cases in 2012. Moreover, the military suffered deep embarrassment when personnel who worked on preventing sexual assaults were themselves accused of sex crimes this month. On Friday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel gave top brass a week to come up with a plan for discussing the problem with all troops and ensuring proper train-

ing and credentials for those who deal with new recruits and sexual assault victims. Education campaigns teach service members basics like how to make sure the other party is a willing participant in intimate contact, or how to step in as a bystander if an alcohol-fueled situation looks like it could lead to inappropriate conduct. The Army is in the fifth year of its “I Am Strong sexual assault prevention campaign, under which all new soldiers are drilled on a set of 10 “sex rules. REUTERS

North Korea fired three short-range missiles from its east coast on Saturday, South Korea’s Defence Ministry said, prompting Western powers to urge Pyongyang to exercise restraint. Launches by the North of short-range missiles are not uncommon, but after recent warnings from the communist state of impending nuclear war, such actions raise concerns about the region’s security. “North Korea fired short-range guided missiles twice in the morning and

once in the afternoon off its east coast, an official at the South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman’s office said by telephone. The official declined to speculate on whether the missiles had been fired as part of a drill or training exercise. A Japanese government source noted the three launches, but said none of the missiles had landed in Japan’s territorial waters. Tension on the Korean peninsula has subsided in the past month, having run high for several weeks after the United Nations Security Council imposed tougher sanctions against Pyongyang following its third nuclear test in February. The North had for weeks issued nearly daily warnings of impending nuclear war with the South and the United States. REUTERS

Stances. The president will go to the podium to explain his stances on Gitmo, drones and al Qaeda. President Barack Obama, under fire for security lapses at a U.S. mission in Libya, will in a speech on Thursday lay out his wideranging counter-terrorism policy, from the controversial use of drones to efforts

to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Obama’s use of military drone aircraft to attack extremists has drawn fire and increased tensions in countries like Pakistan and been criticized by human rights activists in the United States. His inability to follow through on a 2008 campaign pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay prison has been dramatized by a hunger strike among many of the terrorism suspects being held there.

Bad tracks. Officials look at fractured rail in Conn. train crash A fractured segment of track has been found on the rail line of a MetroNorth passenger train from New York that derailed in Connecticut and struck another commuter train, injuring more than 70 people, investigators said over the weekend. Authorities have ruled out foul play in Friday’s collision, which occurred during the evening rush hour between the towns of Bridgeport and Fairfield, about 50 miles northeast

of New York City. Further examination is necessary to determine if track damage found at the site of the accident was a cause or effect of the train wreck, but that stretch of rail line had undergone repair work during the past month, officials said. “We don’t yet know whether the fractured train track caused the accident, or was caused by it,” Earl Weener, a board member for the NTSB. White House warns against IRS scandal ‘fishing expedition’ Not on the hook. President refuses to cooperate in measures that distract from “the real issues at hand.” President Barack Obama will not cooperate in a “partisan fishing expedition” over who knew what and when about revelations that groups seeking tax-exempt status were subject to extra Internal Revenue Service scrutiny. “We are going to work with Congress, as the president said, in legitimate oversight,” Dan Pfeiffer, a senior adviser to Obama, said yesterday on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” program. “What we’re not going to

participate in is a partisan fishing expedition designed to distract from the real issues at hand.” The controversy over the agency’s selective screening of anti-tax groups has stirred Republican attacks on President Barack Obama and emerged as a distraction to his second-term goals of revising U.S. immigration law and reaching a

long-term debt-reduction deal. Pfeiffer, who also appeared on other television talk shows, said the White House would cooperate with Congress in probes while urging them be bipartisan. Four congressional committees and the Justice Department are investigating the matter. Hearings held next week include one by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee with testimony from Douglas Shulman, the IRS commissioner from March 2008 to November 2012. The scandal erupted May 10 when Lois Lerner, the IRS’s director of exempt organizations, apologized at a tax conference for singling out certain groups for further examination of their tax-exempt applications. Report: Yahoo board approves $1.1B purchase of Tumblr AllThingsD reported yesterday that Yahoo’s board approved a $1.1 billion all-cash acquisition of microblogging site Tumblr. ATD had earlier stated the board would be meeting yesterday to consider the acquisition. Yahoo plans to announce the acquisition on today, according to “numerous sources.” “We don’t comment on rumors or speculation,” a Yahoo spokes-

person told VentureBeat yesterday. Yahoo has scheduled a mysterious event for this morning in New York to announce “something special.” However, the event was announced before the board reportedly confirmed the acquisition. If it pans out, this would be Yahoo’s largest and perhaps riskiest acquisition since former Google executive Marissa Mayer assumed the chief executive job. By one metric, Tumblr hosts 51 billion blog posts, a number that grows by 74 million new posts each day. REUTERS

Microsoft hopes to transform its Xbox console into more than just a gaming system. / GETTY IMAGES

Microsoft is set to make a splash this week with the eagerly awaited unveiling of its new Xbox console, eight years after the last version, as it seeks a larger share of the $65 billion a year global computer gaming industry. The small device faces some big competition from the PlayStation 4 by Sony and the Wii U by Nintendo in a shifting market. Gamers are gravitating to online play — suggesting the heyday of console games are over — while Microsoft wants its sleek new toy to cross the bridge to the mainstream and become the family’s enter-

Industry watchers expect Microsoft to integrate the new Xbox much more closely to the TV and cable or satellite box.

Empty classrooms. Colleges scramble to fill empty seats Many leading U.S. colleges and universities face a shortfall in enrollment for fall classes and will offer price discounts as they compete for students in an ever expanding higher education market, according to Forbes. The magazine highlighted 50 public and private U.S. colleges listed in the Princeton Review’s

“Best Colleges” list that are still accepting students in their 2013 freshman classes. In their scramble to fill empty seats, colleges will likely offer tuition discounts in the form of grants, Forbes said. “There are many more colleges in the United States than is economically viable,” wrote Matt Schi-

Average tuition and fees alone at private, nonprofit four-year institutions rose $1,173 or 4.2 percent to $29,056 in 2012-13, according to the College Board. The costs are not much lower for out-of-state students at public four-year institutions where average tuition and fees rose 4.2 percent to $21,706.

Most schools listed offer scholarships to at least 90 percent of incoming freshmen, with some schools’ average grants exceeding $20,000. REUTERS

Race. A new book says that the Asian-American Pacific Islander community isn’t getting a fair shake. For nearly a decade NYU professor Robert T. Teranishi has researched the disparity in college achievement and opportunity between racial groups. But a glaring problem in the data on Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders has begun to emerge over the last few years. The category is simply too broad, masking serious disparities within the group. Teranishi recently collaborated with two like-minded researchers — Samuel D. Museus and Dina C. Maramba — to create an alternative book of scholarship on the subject, “The AAPI Experience: New Insights on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and the Implications for Higher Education.” “There certainly are some AAPI subgroups in the U.S. that have high educational attainment,

Featuring over a dozen top AAPI scholars in the U.S., the book features empirical research on many oft-overlooked experiences within the AAPI designation — from Asian evangelical Christians to Hmong Americans, and a myriad of others. “A lot of scholars are starting to see how AAPI students are misunderstood and overlooked when it comes to policy debates. How we think of these groups has real effects on how we create campus services and programs,” says Teranishi. “But I think now we’re finally reaching a critical mass of research on the needs of AAPI students.”

Making up and moving on Conict. We explore how to resolve the tis that can make a work or school experience harrowing. Conflict is a part of our dayto-day lives, as unpleasant as it can be. Whether you have a fallout with someone in your class group or you have a conflict with a co-worker or even your boss, a conflict is something that must be resolved as soon as possible in a mature and effective manner so that the problem does not escalate. Here are five common conflict resolution strategies that can help you know how to approach the situation and go about handling (and, ultimately, resolving) the problem.

others, but at your own cost. This strategy isn’t an overly assertive type, but requires a more cooperative approach. Here, a very high level of importance is placed on achieving peace rather than winning. In this case, you have to be willing to give way instead of standing your ground.

Compete This type of conflict-resolution strategy can be very useful if you are 100 percent unyielding and unwilling to give in to the other party. Keep in mind that this stagey should only be used when you have a firm stance about the situation and you come from a

position of power. Specifically, this strategy will be the most useful in times of emergency, where a decision regarding the most appropriate actions to be taken is required right away.

Avoid Finally, this type of conflictresolution strategy should be used when you simply want to avoid the conflict altogether. This is a good approach to use when you are just about at the end of your dealing with that party and will not have to deal with them again. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to simply keep your cool and avoid any problems. SHAHEERAH KAYANI

Tanning Mom’s video is very gross

CULTURE

Twitter feed We check in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer.

Remember Tanning Mom? Of course you do; her terrifying orange mug is permanently seared onto your brain, sort of like mental melanoma. Turns out, though, Tanning Mom’s leathery visage isn’t the most horrible thing about her. That would be her voice, as inflicted in the new video for her song “It’s Tan Mom.” Which is more a PSA about the dangers of the sun, prescription pills and thinking you are a celebrity because you were once on TV than it is a song. In it, she slurs about tanning, backdropped by what is either a close-up of the sun or a pit of molten lava she really ought to be hurled into, post haste.

@RobSchneider: My favorite part of flying on Delta is when they play the safety video and the black guy refuses to help with the emergency exit row. @lenadunham: I’m a guest at Barnard College graduation today. At my own graduation I sobbed, hit my mother & fell asleep so pretty psyched for a redo. @MileyCyrus: I’ve been wearin wigs since I was 12 years old honey

The second coming? In a move that will come as a shock to exactly nobody, before performing two new songs on “SNL” on Saturday, Kanye announced that his new album (dropping June 18) will be called “Yeezus.” Are we the only ones who are starting to find Yeezy’s God Complex sort of boring? We get it, you’re a big deal. Like, the hugest deal. If, however, those pesky gay rumors the tabloids are circulating turn out to be true, there may be a case for an immaculate conception situation with Ye and Kim K’s unborn spawn.

THE WORD Alexandra Cavallo takes on the world of gossip.

Today, Rob Schneider is vaguely racist, Lena Dunham hit her mom once and Miley Cyrus wigs out.

Drake is so busy

Kanye’s good buddy Drake is apparently going to be in the new “Anchorman” movie, alongside Lord Yeezy. Drake was photographed on the NYC set of “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” rocking an afro and a pair of mean mutton-chops. Those who doubt that the hip-hop powerhouse can also act would

do well to check out early episode of Canadian teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation” in which Drake — then Aubrey Graham — played a basketball stud who ends up in a wheelchair. It’s some compelling work. No, that’s not true, he’s not very good at acting. Pretty good rapper, though.

BERENICE BEJO The Oscar nominee (for “The Artistâ€?) talks about her latest acclaimed ďŹ lm.

LOOKING INTO ‘THE PAST’ Berenice Bejo first came to American attention with “The Artist, the retro silent film that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Now she’s in “The Past (“Le Passe), the latest from Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who is following up his Oscar-winning hit drama “A Separation. Like that film, “The Past — which just made its Cannes Film Festival debut, to almost uniform praise — concerns a looming divorce, this time

between a French woman (Bejo) and her Iranian husband (Tahar Rahim), who has decided to return to his homeland. “The Pastâ€? is about conicts between family members and loved ones. Is this something that you can relate to? This is a film that is so far removed from my life, from my everyday. But at the same time, it’s really interesting to play someone who is your total opposite.

I was able to take her even further. It’s incredibly liberating.

It must be an interesting experience working with Asghar Farhadi, considering he requires that his cast begin rehearsing two months before the ďŹ lming starts. Yes, it’s rather destabilizing, because after two

months spent rehearsing, I felt like that was it. Our work was done. I didn’t think I would have anything left in me! But at the end, what it does is allow you to make it halfway in your journey. Marie [her character] was in me, and

Asghar Farhadi is known for getting exactly what he wants. Is that true? Absolutely. Asghar is a choreographer. He carefully orchestrates every single movement, every gesture that would otherwise seem insignificant. How do you manage on set when you don’t speak the same language as the director?

It’s rather particular, but I really enjoyed the experience. Having a translator forces you to listen to what the other person has to say and think about their answer. There was a really agreeable atmosphere on set, because we all spent a lot of time observing each other. By the end, Asghar didn’t even need to speak in order to understand each other.

Deal of the Week

Review ‘Erased’ Director. Philipp Stolzl Stars. Aaron Eckhart, Liana Liberato

The thriller “Erased begins with a Hitchcockian mistaken-man premise before morphing, by turns, into a “Bourne film, “True Lies, “Taken, TV’s “24 and “Paycheck (a movie that also featured Aaron Eckhart). It’s a Frankenstein monster, built in Europe from the spare parts of proven (or in the case of “Paycheck, unproven) successes, and intended to be sold as an American knockoff. The only thing they got wrong is that it has some personality. Eckhart stars as Ben Logan, an ex-CIA drone on a job in Belgium. While saddled with his estranged daughter (Lia-

••••• na Liberato), Ben discovers that his office has been mysterious cleared up. Worse, his identity has been excised from all systems. Worse still, men are trying to kill him. For a nice-guy dad, even one with a CIA past, Ben proves weirdly competent at dispatching baddies, driving cars and even going Jack Bauer on a guy with some good, old-fashioned bathtub waterboarding. Liberato, meanwhile, does her best not to be a completely annoying companion on

daddy’s trek to regain his identity and kill baddies. Eckhart is no stranger to projects that are fathoms beneath his talents. But he never coasts. He brings an intensity that makes his character dangerous, especially when viewed through the eyes of a daughter who thought he was a different kind of terrible parent. “Erased is often inane, though it’s only inane in a bad way when it’s wasting Olga Kurylenko as a generic CIA agent tracking Ben from afar. Ditto with an ending that sells the film out in the most anticlimactic way imaginable. Both Eckhart and Liberato deserve better, but at least they deliver better than they were asked to.

JENNA USHKOWITZ The “Glee actress knows a thing or two about being happy.

‘WHAT YOU GIVE ... IS WHAT YOU GET BACK’ Is happiness something that happens to you, or something that you make happen? If you ask “Glee’s Jenna Ushkowitz, she’ll tell you it’s the latter. In fact, she’s written a book on finding your own glee through the power of positive thinking. “Choosing Glee: 10 Rules to Finding Inspiration, Happiness, and the Real You is part memoir, part self-help tome and all motivational. The book is Ushkowitz’s way of giving back. “I like to think that positivity is a choice, and you wake up and make a conscious decision, says

the 27-year-old actress. And though she admits, “I’ve never been through any really dark times where I hit rock bottom, she is convinced that her way works. Here, she tells us why we should have a sunnier disposition. What’s this book about? It’s 10 rules that I live by. I like to think that positivity is a choice. I wanted to share that with my fans. There are people who feel that they’re the victim. You can turn that around, and change your outlook. But what about

somebody who isn’t as fortunate? You make it a choice, and every day you wake up and say, ‘Today I’m going to make the best of every situation and look at every situation with the glass half full.’ After awhile, it sort of becomes subconscious and a way of life. It’s like a diet. People always say, ‘Oh, I’m going to diet for this amount of time,’ well, it’s actually a lifestyle change you need to make. Can you think of a recent time when you had to make that choice? I did a pilot, and it got picked up, and I was all

excited. And then I got this phone call that they were going to recast me. The first thing I thought was, ‘Oh well I’m not a good actor, I’m fat, I’m ugly, they hate me!’ [Laughs] And then you turn around and say, ‘You know what? It wasn’t meant to be.’ And it turned out that the reason was that I was too young. So I went to my friends

and we vegged out and did our thing, it’s like a breakup. But then you get over it. I then went on to book “Spring Awakening, and “Glee. So you have to look at it like, I wouldn’t have been able to experience those things.

As a member of a generation maligned as self-centered, lazy and perpetually adolescent, David Burstein wrote his new book “Fast Future: How the Millennial Generation is Shaping Our World” to try and set the record straight about today’s young adults. Through research and interviews with several of the 80 million American Millennials, Burstein paints a nuanced and optimistic portrait of America’s emerging movers and shakers. You write with more optimism about Millennials than most other people. What drove you to write this book? For the 2008 election cycle I helped produce a documentary, and have been traveling all over the country showing it at college campuses and registering new voters. A lot of people talked to me about wanting to start an energy company or a business, about doing something about education, or about other problems around them. This is a story that needs to be told. At the same time, I was reading all these stories by people from other generations about how our generation is a generation of narcissists, that we’re disengaged, and that’s just not what I’m seeing. So I set out to try and tell the story of our generation from the perspective of the people framing it. I’m curious as to how the

How have Millennials adapted the idea of community? People today are part of so many communities, and they’re consistently and constantly connected to all of them. They take old communities with them and join new ones along the way. Because of the Internet, people can be part of communities across state or international lines, so the ability of young people to spread the work they’re doing is greater than ever before.

Article shines light into a dark place Re: “There’s blood on your labels” (Metro, May 16) I was hugely impressed by Metro for printing the article about the true cost of cheap clothing. Almost everyone that takes public transportation reads this paper, but so few really know where our clothes, as well as other products, come from. Now a lot more people are aware. I know that some people were offended by the pictures, I hope that doesn’t serve as a deterrent to run such hard-hitting pieces in the future. Dan Sensale’s letter to the editor commends

the story but admonishes the choice of pictures, citing a valid concern for children seeing pictures of dead bodies. However, I would like to ask Mr. Sensale to think about the children in Bangladesh who had no choice in working in the factory that collapsed, who had no choice in losing a family member, and to think about the children who had no choice in seeing the dead bodies up close and in person. We have enough fluff and gloss-overs in our everyday lives; what we are sorely lacking in media is sobering reality. ANANDA WHELAN, VIA EMAIL

Rangers fall into 2-0 hole in ugly Game 2 NHL playoffs. The Rangers return to New York having to win both home games to hold serve. Not even Don Draper could spin what happened yesterday afternoon into anything other than a disaster. The Rangers are two losses away from an unsatisfying end to a season which began with Stanley Cup aspirations after a 5-2 loss to the Bruins at the TD Garden in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Bruins lead the best-of-seven series, 2-0. Game 3 is tomorrow night at the Garden. For all intents and purposes, yesterday’s matinee was decided 26 seconds into the third period when Boston’s Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand hooked up on the Bruins’ fourth goal. Bergeron fired a perfect pass to a driving Marchand when Dan Girardi momentarily spied Bergeron. In an instant, the Rangers were down 4-2. Milan Lucic added his third of the postseason 12:13 later. Ryan Callahan and Rick Nash scored the only goals for New York.

What went wrong

SPORTS

1

No defense — Defensemen Dan Girardi and Michael Del Zotto struggled throughout Game 2. Girardi was on the ice for all five Bruins goals, including Brad Marchand’s game-deciding marker 26 seconds into the third. Del Zotto was on the ice for four of Boston’s five goals. Paired together, Girardi and Del Zotto finished with a minus-4 and a minus-3 rating, respectively.

2

Beginners luck? — Boston rookie defensemen Matt Bartkowski, Dougie Hamilton and Torey Krug have dressed for the first two games due to injuries to regulars Andrew Ference, Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden. Instead of forcing the inexperienced blueliners into mistakes, the Rangers have allowed the kids to produce (one goal, three assists and a plus-3 rating) and gain confidence.

3

Power outage — It’s not exactly breaking news that head coach John Tortorella is brutally blunt. During his press conference Saturday, Tortorella said the Rangers’ power play “stinks.” Yesterday, they fulfilled their coach’s assessment. The Rangers went 0-for-5 in 9:12 of ice time on the man advantage, and are 2-for-36 on the power play in the playoffs.

Yankees postponed

The Red Bulls continued their hot streak with a win over crosscountry powerhouse L.A. Galaxy. Tim Cahill scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win in stoppage time on a header at the 91st minute. The win was the fifth in the team’s last six games.

The Yankees didn’t wait yesterday to call things off on a rainy afternoon. They postponed the finale of the Blue Jays series 30 minutes before first pitch. CC Sabathia, who was scheduled to start, will start tonight in Baltimore (7:05, YES).

Rafael Nadal continued his comeback with his biggest win yet. Nadal beat Roger Federer yesterday to claim the trophy at the Italian Open. Nadal dominated, taking the match 6-1, 6-3, for his 20th career win over Federer. He has played in eight tournaments this season and won six after missing seven months with a knee injury.

NBA. J.R. Smith hopes he can ‘retire a Knick’ J.R. Smith disappeared in the Eastern Conference semifinals, but he doesn’t want to disappear from the Knicks’ roster this offseason. Smith is a free agent, but said after the Game 6 loss he would like to stay with New York. “I want to retire a Knick,” Smith said. “I don’t want to go any-

where else. I love it. I love my teammates. I love my coaches. I was sitting in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game just knowing I don’t want to be anywhere else except for in the orange and blue.” The Knicks won’t be able to offer Smith a very large deal due to their salary cap situation. right out of the gate, taking a 31-14 lead after the first quarter. The 17-point hole was too much to fight out of for Memphis. While a personal 8-0 run by Grizzlies guard Quincy Pondexter brought his team back to within striking distance with four minutes to play in the third, they never got closer than 62-56. Manu Ginobili and Matt Bonner answered Pondexter’s hot streak with two 3-pointers of their own to give the Spurs a 16-point lead heading into the fourth. It was a particularly ugly game for the Grizzlies’ two post players, who were supposed to have the advantage over the aging Tim Duncan. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph combined for 17 points on 8-of-24 (33 percent) shooting. Memphis was a shocking minus-28 with Randolph on the floor.
