Window washers saved from broken scaffolding High anxiety. The two men were trapped outside of the 44th floor of the Hearst building. Police report that Emergency Service Unit cops rescued two window washers at the Hearst Building on 57th Street who were on a collapsed scaffolding 44 stories above ground. The ESU cops removed the windows on the 44th floor and attached safety harnesses to the two workers, cops said. The scaffold apparently folded in half, cops said, which it is designed to do when not in use. An extensive profile of this window-washing scaffolding appeared in the New Yorker a few months ago. The New Yorker called

the machinery the most complex window-washing rig in New York. It reportedly took engineers three years to design the $3 million system, which has 67 safety sensors. Police identified the window-washers as Bronx resident Victor Caraballo, 26, and Brooklyn resident Stephen Schmidt, 49. Both men work for a company called Tractel, cops said, which operates out of Long Island City in Queens. Both men reportedly refused medical attention and were not transported to a hospital. A woman who works in the Hearst Building told Metro the scaffolding “looked crazy” from the inside, although she said she herself does not work on the 44th floor.

The City Council considered a bill establishing a citywide ban on Styrofoam yesterday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg introduced the bill, in an effort to make NYC environmentally friendly. Bloomberg has accused the material of “choking” landfills and being an environmental hazard. The New York Times reports that the

city’s waste includes at least 20,000 tons of Styrofoam every year. Some are in total support of Bloomberg’s ban on Styrofoam. “It breaks into these tiny pieces, and it’s not easy to clean up,” Eric Goldstein, an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council told the Times. The ban has the po-

tential to impact the cost of food for restaurants and could decrease their business, WABC reports. “I’ve heard the mayor and everyone say that small business is the backbone of our city,” City Councilman Robert Jackson told WABC. “Let’s not hurt the backbone because we won’t be able to stand up straight.” BREANNA BISHOP

NYC Taxi of Tomorrow plan to be approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Taxi of Tomorrow plan is set to be approved on June 20 by the Taxi and Limousine Commission. The initiative will introduce a new fleet of Nissan utility vans to the city streets, which

is drawing strong criticism from the Greater New York Taxi Association. The organization argues that the Taxi of Tomorrow provides no hybrid options and is inaccessible to riders with mobility disabilities. The association also alleges that the taxi is in violation of local and federal laws.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a $20 billion plan to prepare for rising sea levels and hotter summers expected as a result of climate change in the coming decades. When a big hacking attack makes the news, the U.S. and China are often in the spotlight. The findings by Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab, one of the top makers of antivirus software, show that developing nations in Asia, Eastern Europe and elsewhere are the most vulnerable to online assaults, illustrating how global the threat is even though the world’s two biggest economies dominate the headlines. Fire crews battled a windwhipped wildfire yesterday that burned at least 80 homes near Colorado Springs, while another blaze shut one of the state’s top tourist attractions and forced the evacuation of more than 900 inmates from a prison. The fire about 15 miles northeast of Colorado Springs ignited on Tuesday and ripped through the Black Forest, said Mike Stearly, spokesman for the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center. The fast-moving blaze in a heavily wooded area reached a residential community, where it razed be-

tween 80 and 100 homes and an unknown number of outbuildings, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa told reporters. He said the fire was estimated to cover an area of 7,500 acres to 8,000 acres. The blaze is far from being under control or extinguished, Maketa said, adding that explosions, possibly from residential propane tanks, have been heard in some places. No firefighters or residents have been reported injured. In neighboring Fremont County, a 3,800acre wildfire broke out on Tuesday. REUTERS Acres

Turkish president urges dialogue after riot police empty Taksim Square Riots. The night had brought some of the worst clashes since the troubles began. Turkey’s president called yesterday for dialogue with legitimate demonstrators after riot police cleared the Istanbul square at the center of almost two weeks of protest against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. Abdullah Gul, who has taken a more conciliatory tone than Erdogan during the unrest, said it was the duty of government to engage with its critics, but appeared to close ranks with the prime minister, saying violent protests were a different matter. Britain will use its role as host of a summit of the G8 group of nations next week to try to get both sides in the Syrian conflict to attend a peace conference, Prime Minister David Cameron said yesterday. “We should use the G8 to try and bring pressure on all sides to bring about ... a peace conference, a peace process and a move towards a transitional government in Syria,” Cameron told parliament. Anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela was responding better to treatment in a hospital yesterday after a “difficult last few days,” South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma said. Mandela, 94, South Africa’s first black president, was rushed to a Pretoria hospital on Saturday in a “serious but stable” condition suffering from a recurring lung infection. Rescue. Cook survives two days under sea in shipwreck air bubble After two days trapped in freezing cold water and breathing from an air bubble in an upturned tugboat under the ocean, Harrison Okene was sure he was going to die. Then a torch light pierced the darkness. Okene, 29, was working as a cook on the Jascon-4 tugboat when it capsized on May 26 because of heavy Atlantic ocean swells around 20 miles off the coast of Nigeria, while stabilizing an oil tanker filling up at a Chevron platform. Somehow Okene survived, breathing inside a 4-foot-high bubble of air as it shrunk in the waters slowly rising from the ceiling of the tiny

Sarah Murnaghan, the 10-year-old whose critical need for a new lung led to a temporary change in U.S. transplant rules, received a lung transplant yesterday. The Pennsylvania girl, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, has been on the waiting list since December 2011 and may have had only a few weeks to live without a lung transplant. The Murnaghan family sued U.S. officials after Sarah was denied an exemption to transplant rules that bar children younger than 12 years old from receiving adult lungs until all adults in need are given a chance to accept them. The girl’s plight sparked calls by lawmakers to re-

view the organ donor policies and she won a temporary court order last week making her eligible for a lung from an adult. “Sarah got the call. She will be taken back to the OR in 30 minutes,” the girl’s mother, Janet Murnaghan, wrote yesterday morning on Facebook. The executive committee of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network voted at an emergency meeting this week to create an interim classification for child lung candidates with exceptional cases. The rule will be effective until July 1, 2014, giving time to find a permanent solution to the under-12 policy. BLOOMBERG Years old

Mayor targets donors in gun control debate Money talks. Bloomberg wants to deprive funds from anti-gun control lawmakers New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in his latest bid for tougher gun con-

trol, is urging the city’s legions of Democratic donors to withhold funds from four Democratic senators who opposed a background checks bill earlier this year. The letter, sent to hundreds of the city’s major donors yesterday, targets the four Democrats who joined Republicans in blocking a compromise

bill designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, according to Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group Bloomberg founded and largely funds. The bill reached the Senate floor just months after a gunman killed 20 first graders and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., prompting gun

control advocates to push for significant changes to U.S. gun laws. The plan to expand background checks to sales made online and at gun shows failed to become law after Republicans threatened to use a filibuster to block any gun proposal that did not get 60 votes in the 100-member Senate. REUTERS

Mob trial

Prosecutors: Bulger a ‘hands-on killer’ Federal prosecutors described accused Boston mob boss James “Whitey Bulger as a “hands-on killer in the opening statements yesterday in his long-awaited trial on 19 murders he is said to have committed or ordered in the 1970s and ’80s. In a story that has fascinated Boston for decades, the accused head of the “Winter Hill

crime gang fled after a corrupt law enforcement agent tipped him off in 1994 that arrest was imminent. He lived in hiding for 16 years, most of them while on the FBI’s “Most Wanted list. The 83-year-old suspect’s lead attorney, J.W. Carney, said Bulger had been a gangster but denied he was a coldblooded killer. The three prosecution witnesses expected to provide key testimony in the murder charges, he said, were violent men willing to say anything to reduce their time in prison. REUTERS

Kanye West to NYT: ‘I’m like Steve Jobs’ You guys remember Steve Jobs, right? That guy who dropped out of college and then went on to helm Apple (computers, heard of them?) and essentially change technology as we know it? Yeah, that guy. Well, according to the totally unhinged — and quintessentially Kanye — New York Times interview that is currently blowing up the Internet, Yeezy is sort of like that guy. Except, you know, better. Miley and Bieber: It’s not like that In an on-air call to DC radio station HOT 99.5, Miley Cyrus declared that all those crazy rumors about she and Justin Bieber doing it are totally unfounded. Like, whatever, Cyrus told the station, she’s totally engaged. Never mind that word on the teenybopper street (like Sesame Street, but with less parental guidance) is that fiance Liam Hemsworth dumped her cute butt. Also, everyone knows that engaged people in Hollywood — or, you know, anywhere — never have sex with people that aren’t their beloved. What was it Yeezus said about adultery? Something like “it wasn’t me.”

A family affair You know what’s creepy? Scientology. You know what’s creepier? Tongue kissing your son. You know who is allegedly guilty of being a part of both those scenarios? Will Smith. In a recent interview on a Thai TV show, Smith apparently answered a question about how close he and son Jaden are by making out with him. Or simulating it — either way, that’s not okay. Sure, we know everything’s reportedly looser in Thailand. We’ve seen — I mean, heard about — Thai hookers performing some pretty impressive acts with ping pong balls and their, er, lady parts, but still. Remember the old days, when Will Smith was just relaxing all cool, shooting some b-ball outside of school? Sigh.

And while we’re all for envelope pushing, somehow making light of a young girl’s suicide attempt is too much. C’mon, Marilyn, you’re better than that. Go back to starting rumors that you eat puppies for breakfast, or something.

2 Chainz sips the sizzurp

Just one day before he was arrested for drug charges, TMZ reports, 2 Chainz posted a video to Vine of him and his crew partying. A party that included, if the bottle of cough syrup featured prominently in the shots was any indication, some serious sippin’ on some sizzurp. We didn’t even know that sizzurp aka “purple drank” aka a mixture of cough syrup, Sprite, and candy was still de rigueur in the rap community. Either that or he and his friends were Robo-Tripping around like a pack of backwoods teenagers who ran out of beer. Or, you know, someone legitimately had a cold, but somehow we think not. Also shown in the Vine: 2 Chainz smoking one of those funny cigarettes. The real lesson here, kids, is not that drugs are bad. We’re not your mom, or your friendly local DEA officer. The lesson here is that when sharing your drug-doings via social media, SnapChat is the way to go.

DARLENE LOVE The singer talks about doing backup for Phil Spector and the documentary “Twenty Feet from Stardom.

SHE’S A REBEL Darlene Love may not be a household name, but you’d know her if you heard her. As a member of The Blossoms, she recorded background vocals for many key Phil Spector songs in the ’60s. Spector even put her front and center on “He’s a Rebel and “He’s Sure the Boy I Love, but credited The Crystals. The new documentary “Twenty Feet From Stardom highlights those, like her, who made a living singing backup. Today, Love, boisterous even in her 70s, enjoys a solo career singing her old songs. In 2010 she was inducted into the Rock

and Roll Hall of Fame. Phil Spector wouldn’t tell people that you and The Blossoms were black. What was the reaction when the public found out? Most disc jockeys knew. But as far as the public knew, they didn’t know what color we were. They didn’t care. They just loved the sound. What was Spector like early on? Actually, he was a great guy when we first met him! He was very calm and hadn’t lost it yet. [Laughs] He came from

Another view

Why didn’t Spector always give you credit? He had recorded with The Crystals, but he didn’t want that same sound. He used their name because they already had a thing going on. It was easier to break a record with them than with me. New York to California, and the musicians were

already great in their own right. He came to us kind of humble. He always had on a suit and tie. And we thought that was weird because nobody came to a session dressed up. He was very short, so he used to wear those Spanish shoes with the big heels that the English people wore in the ’60s. It was a real heel, like the ones that matadors wear. Is there more comradery than competition with background singers? It’s like a sisterhood. We were always happy when someone made it, because most background

singers do not aspire to be solo artists. The one that sticks out the most was Luther Vandross, because he became a superstar. I don’t even think Luther started out wanting to be a solo artist. He loved being a background singer. It was part of our lives to create. That’s what we were doing, we were creating different sounds. Producers were depending

on different background singers. They’d put the song on, and it was just a bare record. They’d ask us, “What do you hear here? Should we do something here? We were creating, and no one really understands that until they see this movie.

1

When curling your hair, start with the sides first, as those need to be the most defined.

2

Don’t worry about the braid looking perfect. “A little messy is better. You don’t want it to look too princess-y,” says Balding.

Taylor Gurski demonstrates how you can get your hair off your neck and still look glam. / BESS ADLER

Instructions

1

Create a deep side part. To find your part, use a fine-tooth comb or anything with a point, such as a pencil, and measure from the middle of your eyebrow going up. Pick whichever side works best for your hairline.

2

Blow out your hair with a big round brush to give it volume.

3

Using a 1-inch barrel curling iron, curl your whole head, working from mid-length to the ends only. Hold the iron vertically and wrap small sections of hair around the barrel toward your face. Only when doing the front of the hair, or bangs, wrap your hair around the barrel away from your face. Balding uses Redken’s Fashion Works 12 for texture and grip.

4

Once the hair has cooled, use a boar bristle brush to gently brush out curls.

5

Next, section off hair underneath the part. Working at an angle, French braid the section halfway down the hair. Tie the braid with a clear elastic, such as Snag-Free Hair Elastics from Sephora, and sweep it across your shoulder underneath the waves.

I’ll give you this for that. Sites like www.sugar daddie.com and www. seekingarrangement.com make transfers explicit and, therefore, more honest. Yet, you may not necessarily want to run your love life like that. For better or worse, allowing someone to shovel out cash on your behalf supports an inherent power dynamic in the relationship. Because chances are pretty slim that individuals in a couple earn equal incomes, it can be hard to keep things 50/50. You want to know about managing your money while dating and whether or not to pay for dinner. Grab a seat (if you don’t already have one) and listen up.

DO pay your own rent or mortgage if you live apart. If your lover covers it, build up savings. You’ll need the emergency cash to take over payments or, possibly, move to a new place.

DO ensure that both names are on the lease. DON’T pay a dime toward a mortgage when cohabiting unless your name is on the deed. Otherwise, you’re building equity in an investment that you don’t own. Instead, pay for groceries or bills.

You should love your families — the word “love” has been taken out of its true context. Our creator has commanded us to “love one another as I have loved you” — the word “love” shouldn’t mean to fornicate. RUTH MARTINEZ, VIA EMAIL

Re: ‘Easy for Franklin to say’ (Metro, June 12) Ben Franklin knew a thing or two about unsafe times. Violence against civilians was common during the Revolution, by both sides. When he expressed his opinion on the relative merits of safety and liberty, he had no way of knowing how the struggle would end. Franklin couldn’t have imagined what we face today — because no one then had ever been this safe. DAN WYLIE-SEARS, VIA EMAIL

GEN-UH-OH? NFL. The Jets could be going down the same two-QB path as last season.

While he has only shown flashes of talent through the first two days of Jets minicamp, the team is still open to giving quarterback Geno Smith a role on offense.

Head coach Rex Ryan admitted yesterday that last year’s experiment with Tim Tebow didn’t work out, but even with that failure in mind, the Jets could be prepared to give their rookie quarterback a role in the offense even if he doesn’t win the starting job. Smith, who was praised by both Ryan and quarterback coach David Lee for his quick feet and

overall speed, could feature in a package designed to highlight his abilities — similar to Colin Kaepernick’s role early last season for the 49ers. The Jets won’t let the failure with Tebow a year ago mess with any plans they might have for Smith. “I know what everybody’s thinking, if we did that, ‘Oh, didn’t we try that last year?’ Again, certainly that’s a possibility,”

Ryan said. “To probably make assumptions now probably isn’t the thing to do, but we will let this thing work out and pan out, and we’ll see.” Along those lines, Lee called it an “open, even competition” between Smith and incumbent starter Mark Sanchez.

NFL. Cromartie takes on surprising role as leader of secondary

Cromartie will set up the Jets’ secondary with an intense training regiment and personal trainer. / GETTY IMAGES Grand scenario Jets running back Mike Goodson was in the courtroom yesterday instead of the practice field. •

Goodson was only in court in Morris County, N.J., for a few minutes before it was determined

he will have his case decided by a grand jury. •

He was arrested last month in New Jersey and charged with illegal possession of a handgun and marijuana. Goodson pleaded not guilty.

The back end of the Jets defense just learned each other’s names a few weeks ago. They’re going to get a lot closer a lot faster over the next couple weeks. The Jets secondary last year and this year looks nothing like each other. This offseason, the team traded star cornerback Darrelle Revis, and it declined to bring back the Top-3 safeties from last year’s team, meaning the secondary is not only younger but also hasn’t worked together. To solve this problem, cornerback Antonio Cromartie is hosting several members of the unit in California over

the next few weeks. The workouts will take the unit from the end of minicamp through training camp in late July. The players will live and train together, hopefully accelerating their understanding on and off the field. “Josh Bush and those guys came to me and said, ‘Hey, look, everybody is saying you’re in the best shape, so we’re coming out there with you,’” Cromartie said. Bush said that it was defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman who recommended he work out with Cromartie this offseason to get ready for training camp. KRISTIAN DYER

The Islanders’ difficult contract talks with captain Mark Streit will never take place. Instead, the team decided to simply move on and trade his rights to Philadelphia. The Islanders received a fourth-round pick and 24-year-old forward Shane Harper. Harper had just 10 points this season for the AHL’s Phantoms. The Flyers now have exclusive negotiating rights with the 35-yearold defenseman prior to free agency’s start on Aug. 1. Streit had six goals and 21 assists last season, but the Isles had not offered him a new deal since earlier in the regular season — a deal significantly less than what Streit was targeting. METRO

The 113th U.S. Open begins championship play today at Merion’s famed East Course (6,996 yards, par-70), which could be a muddy mess based on the weather forecast. The four-day tournament features 156 players and 10 past champions. Here’s what to keep an eye on:

Things to watch

Take a trip down memory lane, Hogan’s historic club on display still had to go out and win it the next day, Tiger Woods reminded everyone Tuesday. Today, there is a plaque on the 18th fairway commemorating the 1-iron shot. The actual club Hogan used — the same one that had gone missing for a time period — was on display earlier in the week. Many tour pros posed excitedly with the rusted relic.

Every golf fan knows about Ben Hogan’s iconic 1-iron blast, a shot immortalized in a black-and-white print, onto the 18th green on Merion’s famed 18th hole. Hogan knocked in a par on the hole to force a three-way playoff, then won the 1950 Open the following day. “It’s a great photo. But it would have been an all right photo if he didn’t win. He

Rough is ‘thick and nasty’ — and greens may run very slow The East Course has been given a clean bill of health by USGA Executive Director Mike Davis. Despite the short yardage, golfers say Merion is a tremendous challenge. The greens run slower than most, due to slope, and don’t even think about hitting it into the rough. “The rough is thick and nasty, said Open competitor Matt Kuchar. “If

you’re playing from the rough, you have no chance of scoring here. The rough has been cut 5 inches from tee to green on short par-4s and 4 inches on the longer par-4s and par-5s. Fairway length is almost a half-inch. The greens are setup quick, but rain is expected to slow them considerably. They were running fast yesterday. That won’t last.
