‘Multicultural’ guide offers cops tips The NYPD disseminates a manual throughout the department called “Policing a Multicultural Society,” apparently with the aim of increasing cultural sensitivity within the city’s police force, the New York Times reported. City lawyers in the recent stop-andfrisk lawsuit reportedly pointed to the manual as evidence that the department is conscientious with regard to diversity. “Beckoning people to come to you by holding your palms up, for example, may be seen as obscene among Latin Americans,” is one tidbit that the manual offers. The manual notes Africans shake hands “through a light touch of the palms.” NYPD spokesman Paul Browne reportedly told the New York Times the manual’s advice, is “consistent with the literature and texts utilized by universities.” DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

The robber followed the victim into a residence near West 18th Street at 11:25 p.m., when he pushed the man down, causing the victim to injure his hip, police said.

The thief swiped the 92-year-old victim’s Bible and glasses, The Daily News reports. A $22,000 reward is being offered leading to the arrest of the suspect, with $10,000 being offered each from the mayor’s office and the NYPD and $2,000 from Crime Stoppers. LAURA SHIN

practice is unconstitutional. The presiding judge in the trial has yet to issue a decision, and the DOJ’s stated interest exists only if she decides against the city, finding that stop-and-frisk is a violation of the Fourth Amendment right to protection against unreasonable search and seizure. If the judge finds a need for reform, the Justice Department asked that she consider a court-appointed monitor — and moreover, that she consider making the DOJ the monitor. “A court-appointed Indoor bubble

In the statement, the Justice Department cites its experience engaging with police forces in the past. Of the 50 bills he introduced in the 2007-8 sessions, he failed to get a cosponsor for 39 of them, and according to a senior aide, “he just never tried.” “The point was to be able to say he introduced a bill,” the aide said.

Mayor opposes new counterfeit luxury items bill Knockoffs. The bill could jail customers who buy fake goods for up to a year.

HELLO COACH! J.KIDD BACK WHERE HE BELONGS

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to oppose a City Council bill that could potentially jail customers of fake luxury items, the New York Post reports. The bill, introduced on Thursday by City Councilwoman Margaret Chin, could put the buyers in jail for up to a year and force them to pay a $1000 fine. The Bloomberg administration believes that the bill would deter people from buying legal items and could also dampen the booming tourist industry that has thrived under his three terms, a source told the Post. Chin says that her bill is the best solution to help combat the growing problem of counterfeit goods in Chinatown and throughout the rest of New York City.

Gun control. Schumer says Bloomberg’s gun group ads are a no-go Senator Chuck Schumer had disparaging words for some of the mayor’s dogged efforts in pushing for gun control. In a recent interview on his negotiating tactics, Schumer, who played a big role in the federal background-check legislation that eventually stalled in the Senate last year, told Time magazine he does not think Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun control ads are effective in red states — in part, apparently, simply because the ads are coming from the mayor of New

York City. “I am trying to persuade — in whatever way I’m allowed to — the gun groups to put out different ads,” Schumer said. According to Schumer, another senator told him that constituents dismiss Bloomberg’s ad because the speaker’s accent was reportedly inauthentic. Schumer reportedly is appreciative of the mayor’s efforts to counter the National Rife Association’s power, but does not believe money is the source of that power. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Mueller says US will hold Snowden responsible on leak Hearing. The FBI director says Snowden harmed national security when he divulged the secrets. FBI Director Robert Mueller said on Thursday that the U.S. government is doing everything it can to hold confessed leaker Edward Snowden accountable for splashing surveillance secrets across the pages of newspapers worldwide. “As to the individual who has admitted making these disclosures, he is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation,” Mueller said without naming Snowden. Snowden is believed to be in Hong Kong after flying there last month from Hawaii, where he lived. He has said he plans to request asylum and that he divulged secrets to the Guardian and the Washington Post because he believed the surveillance programs were illegal and intrusive. DULL AS DIRT Opinion

TOM FOREMAN POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

Intent on expanding my limited grasp of social media, I have stepped up the number of people I am following on Twitter. A week or so ago, I’d say the list was pretty much limited to my dentist and some woman in Arizona who collects porcelain owls. Now, I get regular updates on the activities of quarterback Drew Brees, actor Rainn Wilson and unfortunately the President of the United States. Let me explain. Considering all the hoopla over Mr. Obama’s proclivity for new media, I thought his tweets would be a torrent of 140-character brilliance. I expected gems like, “Note to Ag Dept: Plant soybeans on the National Mall. World hunger=solved!” Or maybe I could weigh in on difficult decisions: “Suspected terrorist spotted in Yemen. RT if I should launch the drones!” At the very least, I thought I’d get some inside scoops. “Spilled coffee on the presidential slacks. Bummer.” Or, “I just bet Sebelius that Biden will be asleep before Cabinet meeting ends. LOL.” Instead, I’ve received a stream of political pabulum. He tweets things like, “We can’t miss this chance to fix our broken immigration system,” and, “We have a sense of energy and dynamism.” There is nothing wrong with

Of course he should promote his views, and heaven knows my tweets are often pretty weak. It’s just that he is the Leader of the Free World, and his tweets are … well, boring. Seriously, Bob Dole’s are infinitely more amusing, and he’s just hanging out in Kansas. Maybe I’m missing some secret code. When Mr. Obama tweets, “The bill before the Senate isn’t perfect,” perhaps he actually means, “Hey, everyone who sees Rand Paul today, offer him some hair mousse!” But probably not. My complaint is not about his politics. I’m agnostic on that. I’m just so disappointed with the lack of ideas, imagination and inspiration, that I’m not sure I’ll follow him much longer. Which, come to think of it, seems to be the problem he has with many Democrats these days.

Microsoft said it would open 500 special stores, within existing Best Buy stores in the United States, selling exclusively Windows-based tablets and computers and other Microsoft products in an effort to revitalize sales of its flagship operating system. The world’s largest software company, which already has a chain of 70 or so of its own Microsoft stores and kiosks within shopping malls, said the initiative would add more than 1,200 Microsofttrained Best Buy sales associates to help customers.

Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system has sold more than 100 million copies since its launch in October, but sales of new tablets and PCs running the software, and its own Surface tablet, have not been as strong as it hoped. An updated version called Windows 8.1 is scheduled for release later this year. The store-within-a-store approach “offers a largescale, hands-on customer experience” of products, said Tami Reller, head of marketing at Microsoft’s Windows unit. REUTERS

Q&A

What do you think audiences need from superheroes now?

CULTURE Q&A

Teaming up There’s been a great deal of talk about plans for a Justice League movie. Do you feel a natural sense of competition with the Avengers, which is owned by rival company Marvel? I mean, of course there’s going to be a sense of competition because it’s groups of superheroes coming together, of course there is. I don’t like to think of it as competition. But people will naturally put the two together as competitors. Eventually there has to be a World Cup of Superheroes. Right. [Laughs] So who would win? OK. The difference between the Marvel heroes and the DC heroes is that DC heroes are godlike, all of them, where Marvel heroes, you might get one like Thor but otherwise they’re very human. So in a head- to-head … who knows? You can take sides. No, I’m not going to pick a side because I don’t think it’s fair because anything can happen. A plan never survives first contact. So … yeah. But it would be very cool.

HENRY CAVILL The Man of Steel says that the modern superhero is more vulnerable and realistic: “We want to think that maybe our hero will lose, but then he wins.”

THE NEW SUPERMAN Iron Man gets the best jokes. Batman gets the best films. Wonder Woman gets the best plane (invisible!). And Hulk? Well, Hulk smash! But Superman started it all. Now 75 years old, the galaxy’s most famous Kryptonian is back in “Man of Steel,” a grounded take on the icon, directed by Zack “Watchmen” Snyder. In the film — an origin story — the young alien is scuttled to Earth, grows up, meets a girl (Amy Adams) and defends our planet from the evil General Zod (Michael Shannon).

READ THE REVIEW ON PAGE 22.

He also mopes around — a lot. In a tonal continuation of “The Dark Knight” series, our hero has feelings, and they add an extra dimension that the creators (including producer Christopher Nolan) hope to make the character less boring and more relevant. Henry Cavill, a British actor best known for TV’s “The Tudors,” stars as the Man of Steel. We had to ask him why he’s not so steely after all. We’ve gone from square-jawed demigods to heroes that have to show vulnerability or a flaw. What do you think of that progression? Well, when they were initially conceived, we needed them — desperately. We needed them to be strong-jawed superheroes — the classic hands-onhips, nothing-can-touchme, bullets bouncing off them [kind]. I mean, when Superman first came around, we were out of World War I and World War II was sort of creeping up. We needed those guys who could flit around the place and do wonderful things, and we could fantasize about all the world’s problems being solved.

“It’s the same thing we’ve always needed, which is that sense of hope. There’s always something going wrong in the world. It just shifts depending on the generation. And it’s always nice to have that fantasy that there’s someone who’s going to fix everything. It’s beating the odds, and that’s been the same with mythological characters since the dawn of time, since we could think up gods — good gods and bad gods. Nothing has changed in the human psyche. We still need that.” GETTY IMAGES

And now? And now they’ve evolved into a more modern, more realistic thing to go with the times, so that the stories are still interesting. People these days don’t find the immovable object interesting — the untouchable thing and the hero who will always win. We want to think that maybe our hero will lose, but then he wins. We must be able to associate with them. They’ve become less of a fantasy and more of an ideal to strive toward. What has the Superman done to make him more relatable? We’ve given him a very

And that is what really makes us in touch with someone else, makes us go, “I know your pain” or, “Yeah, I’ve felt that happy before.” “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan produced “Man of Steel” and has made the DC Comics world feel tethered to reality more than to cartoons. It ties in very much with the evolution of the superhero. We need to see them

in a real-world setting. It helps us to feel more and to be a part of the story. And that’s important to me. I’ve never played this sort of, “OK, I’m going to talk [in a low, gravelly voice] all of a sudden.” If I heard someone talking that way, I’d look at them funny and say, “Are you OK? Do you need to sit down?” Because they sound like a crazy person. I wanted to play him as a realistic being, just with these incredible powers, and that was up to CGI to fix for me. [Laughs]

THE SUPERSENSITIVE SUPERHERO Essay

CHRIS HARDWICK CREATOR OF NERDIST

Chris Hardwick, creator of the Nerdist podcast and YouTube channel, tells us why Superman has to cry. As told to Ned Ehrbar. We’ve definitely become more of a culture of wanting to identify with characters, rather than wanting to see characters that we couldn’t be. It’s not just movies and superheroes. When you look at protagonists in television, they’re kind of crappy people. There’s Don Draper or Dexter or Walter White. They’re not one or the other — they’re muddy. What you see coming out now — after the era of ‘90s superhero movies — is sort of like the transition between glam rock and grunge, where you have the square-jawed heroes being phased out. They’re

Superman: “I have so many feelings!” / WB

kind of one-dimensional, there’s not really much of an arc, they’re just there to facilitate all of the action and just sort of be the opposing force to evil. But now people want to see more humanity, and I honestly think that has a lot to do with the Internet. The way we interact with the Internet, the way that we’re all in each other’s

business with YouTube and vlogs, we’re just used to seeing humans. And that’s what we’re identifying with, seeing other humans. People are bored by the one-dimensional, “oh, he can do anything” hero because what’s at stake then? What are they battling? We’ve seen so much of it up to this point that the one place that

superheroes hadn’t really gone, at least in film yet, is inward. What works in “Man of Steel” is just the idea of taking the heroes off the pedestal and going, “They’re still … if not humans, then creatures. Creatures with struggles.” Because that’s what people get wrapped up in, story and struggle and not just, “Oh look, he’s better than everyone else.” It’s the idea that he’s not better than everyone. And Superman has a lot of struggles in the movie, more so than just, “Oh, he’s got superpowers and he beats the crap out of those guys and it’s all going to be fine because he’s indestructible.” People have seen that. You still want your healthy dose of action scenes, but then you want to identify with the characters.

Rebuilding Robert V. Conte Local. A superhero to the comic book community faces new challenges. Robert V. Conte has worked in the superhero business since 1987. He’s written, edited and packaged more than 2,000 titles, including Godzilla, The Shadow, Mr. Magoo and an authorized Rock-it Comix featuring Ozzy Osbourne. “With exception of illustrating comics, I’ve done everything there is to do in this business,” says Conte. Conte closed Manhattan Comics & More in the Flatiron District on May 5, one day after the industry’s iconic Free Comic Book Day. He said one reason for the close was decreasing sales: Digital comics are aggressively replacing

traditional printed comics among consumers. “It broke my heart to shut down the store,” says Conte. “Fortunately, two former employees opened Carmine Street Comics to service their future needs.” After investing everything he had into this venture, Conte is in turmoil. “Homelessness and being jobless are terrifying realities to face,” says Conte. “I’ve had to wake up and acknowledge that I’m not an invincible 25-yearold anymore. Burning the midnight oil for decades has caught up with me. When doctors tell you to slow down immediately or you’ll drop dead, you have to listen — not only for yourself but for those who love you.” Refusing to crumble under multiple pressures, Conte is concentrating on two projects: a graphic nov-

el and a reality show. “She Abused Me” is the graphic novel, which details his personal accounts of relationships with several women that were important to him, but negatively affected his life. “The story details how growing up in a dysfunctional family can lead to one having similar relationships throughout life.

There are all kinds of abuse — emotional, psychological and, of course, physical. Society tends to stereotype men being the sole culprits in the disintegration of the family unit. It’s simply untrue and the time has come to understand abuse is not gender-specific. Abuse is abuse, period.” The other project is a crowdfunded reality show, “Rebuilding Robert,” which he promises will not be formatted a la “Comic Book Men.” “‘Rebuilding Robert’ is about a person reconstructing himself, from the lowest possible point, in hopes of rising from the ashes stronger than ever. Of course comics are a component of the show with some rock ’n’ roll, spirituality and sex added for good measure,” laughs Conte. CONTENT PROVIDED BY VERONICA TUCCIO

Muscle Man: ‘This is what I do for my country’ Egypt’s economy suffered after the 2011 revolution that deposed President Hosni Mubarak, and Sayed AlEssawy, now 27, took it upon himself to revive the nation’s tourism industry with a fight to the death against a lion in front of the pyramids of Giza, proclaiming, “This is what I want to do for my country.” The self-styled “world’s strongest man” had noble intentions but was met by criticism from animal rights groups and the Egyptian tourist board distanced itself. Nonetheless, Al-Essawy entered the arena with shield and sword and took on the lion, although the animal looked bored. Man defeated beast. The gladiator was subsequently arrested, yet supporters point to the reopening of the pyramids and other major attractions after the fight as proof that AlEssawy was a national hero. 2012

ROB KAZINSKY The “True Blood” actor reveals the weakness of craft services on English television sets.

SOOKIE’S NEW LOVE INTEREST This season on “True Blood,” there’s a new faerie in town: Rob Kazinsky’s Ben Flynn, a supernatural love interest for Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin). The British actor is aware his introduction will likely rile some of the show’s relationship-obsessed fans, but he’s just happy to have a job with free snacks. So, any trepidation about coming on as a new love interest for Sookie? I am 100 percent certain that I am going to be absolutely hated by everyone. Team Eric’s going to hate me, Team Bill’s going to hate me, Team Alcide — they’re all going to absolutely loathe this guy, just because he’s not them. And I am prepared for that backlash. However, I think

in time, people will come to realize that Ben, for the first time, offers Sookie a chance at happiness that none of those guys could ever give her. How does this compare to your time on the British soap opera “EastEnders”? Different worlds, vastly different worlds. I did 254 episodes of “EastEnders” and averaged about 85 episodes a year, shooting anywhere between 30 and 50 pages of dialogue a day. And then this — we’re doing 10 episodes a year, so it’s a slightly different machine. [Laughs] The whole way everything goes on here in America is very, very different. The biggest difference to me is always craft services. Having free food on set is just the best

thing that’s ever happened to anybody, ever. Is craft service really not a thing in England? For the BBC, there’s no such thing as crafty or free food. At “EastEnders,” there wasn’t, anyway. So having doughnuts on set? Wonderful. Fresh fruit all the time? Oh my God, it’s great. Most Americans’ exposure to British TV production was “Extras,” which looked more in line with the American setup. I think that was the idea, so that it would be universally sellable. I mean, my experience in England is fairly limited to the soap that I did. The way they do it [in the U.S.], when I did “Brothers and Sisters,” “Law & Order,” everything, it’s a much easier place to be off-set. There’s much more to do when you’re not working.

Iggy Azalea: ‘The New Classic’ for rap Aussie hip-hop. She invited you to taste her Skittles last year, but she’s not messing around. Iggy Azalea is a leggy Australian blond bombshell — not exactly the type of person you’d expect to see as the up-and-coming face of hip-hop. The 22-year-old initially tempted hip-hop kids with smutty lyrics like “taste my Skittles” in a 2011 viral hit and followed up on her success in 2012 by being the first female to make hip-hop magazine XXL’s Freshman Class (a big deal in the industry). You may already have picked up that Azalea — real name Amethyst Kelly — is no prude. Visit us online for the full interview: She easily chats about oral sex, “vagina-ry costumes” and drops many f-bombs in the process. It’s refreshing-

ly charming rather than trashy, although perhaps parents wouldn’t approve. You’ve got an interesting look. What’s the thinking behind it, and what are your influences? I like bold prints and fun things like cartoons and movie characters: “Grease,” Looney Tunes, “Space Jam,” that kind of thing. When it comes to makeup, I have to have a full beat all the time — I call it “drag natural.” It’s where you have as much makeup as a drag queen, but you try to make it look natural. Why did you start rapping? I think I just liked the aggressiveness of it, and I liked that they kind of seemed to be the rebels of all the styles of music. I thought artists like Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, 2Pac, Ludacris and OutKast were really cool. I really liked song lyrics, and I wanted to know them all. I find it annoy-

ing when song lyrics — including my own — are wrong online. Are you a perfectionist? Yeah, I’m meticulous. How many times do you go over your lyrics? OCD levels? OCD. It’ll take me a few days to even write a song and I listen to it back and there’ll be changes on my latest album — but I haven’t had time to get in the studio yet. You use a lot of sexually charged language in tracks like “Two Times” and “Work.” Were you the rude kid at school who taught all the other kids about sex? I was — yeah. I had a club in sixth grade, which was like a rude poetry club. I put out flyers and of course I had my contact information on this, and it found its way back to the teacher and I remember getting called to the principal’s office for it.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a mixed bag! Superhero saga. Superman almost returns in this noisy, mindless new reboot. Today’s comic book movies are self-serious to a fault, and for that you can blame the first Christopher Reeve “Superman from 1978. Frivolous junk for pre-adolescent boys (and the nostalgic adults they would become) was suddenly treated like grandiose American myth, complete with a sleepy Marlon Brando, topbilled and extravagantly paid, as Superman’s dad. “Superman Returns tried to ape this style, and its failure — it “only made $400 million — sent producers to start from scratch. A lot of what they came up with is roughly the same as before, but still succumbs to many of today’s blockbuster annoyances. Like the ’78 “Super-

man, it opens with the death of Krypton and the punishment of mutinous fascist General Zod (Michael Shannon!). Here, Zod gets to kill Jor-El (a regal Russell Crowe), but not before the latter sends his son to an uncertain future on Earth. Zod eventually

re-enters the picture, demanding humanity hand over the now-adult flying humanoid (Henry Cavill) or else. (It’s just like “The Purge!) Kal-El/Clark Kent/ Superman, now a brooding drifter yet to take up journalism, has to decide whether to comply or fight.

He doesn’t have much deciding to do. Though shepherded by Christopher Nolan, this is surprisingly light on thought. A heavy first half, which regulates snippets of S-Man’s youth to Nolan-style flashbacks, makes way for a solid hour of bombast, smackdowns

and widespread destruction. Those who enjoyed major cities being leveled — with presumably thousands of off-screen deaths — in “Transformers 3 and “The Avengers will get a kick out of Metropolis receiving even worse treatment. At least it’s equal opportunity: The fight between our hero and Zod’s minions begins with a thrashing of Smallville’s 7-Elevens and IHOPs. The brute force, brought by a relatively tempered Zack Snyder (“300) is impressive, at least at first: When the belligerent Kryptonians start wreaking havoc, things feel genuinely dangerous. These scenes, alas, subscribe to what could be dubbed J.J. Abrams syndrome. As in his “Star Trek pictures, thoughtful problem solving is replaced by mindless action. When Superman has to overpower a spaceship, there’s no strategy and no real doubt that it will all work out. Overqualified actors

Review ‘Man of Steel’ Director. Zack Snyder Stars. Henry Cavill, Michael Shannon Rating. PG-13

••••• make up for lots. Cavill, who never has to play nerdish Clark (not yet, anyway), is a fine Superman, imposing but wry. Though Shannon’s Zod is no Terrence Stamp in “Superman II,â€? he’s hammy fun, while Amy Adams’ Lois Lane is nearly as plucky and flirty as Margot Kidder. But like most of today’s blockbusters, it’s a mixed bag of promise and disappointment, a picture hobbled by aural and visual noise.

With “Pineapple Express,” screenwriters/bros Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg hit upon an inspired, if counterintuitive pairing: An action film, a genre that requires agency and invention, populated by stoner slackers. Stars Rogen and James Franco could riff their way out of any narrative dead-ends. The same notion applies to “This is the End,” in which most of today’s comedy scene, playing themselves, go to a party at James Franco’s “Scarface”ian manse — only to get gorily dispatched by what turns out to be the Christian rapture. All that’s left are Rogen, Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride, cowering inside Franco’s house while fire and demons rage outside. They have little to do but riff on their personas. Franco gets gay rumor jokes. Oscar-nominee Hill, with diamond stud, is all Hollywood positivity (and apparently sincere, which

••••• makes him more hilariously grating). McBride somehow proves more evil and twisted than “Eastbound & Down”’s Kenny Powers.

The Apatow name has stumbled a bit since it crashed unexpectedly into the mainstream. “This is the End” plays in part as a re-establishing of the brand, with the stars all (or mostly all) coming together. They can still banter, one-upping each other into left-field one-liners. Meanwhile, cokehead Michael Cera gets impaled on a street pole far too quickly. (Don’t worry: He reprises the obnoxious jerk routine in two forthcoming no-budget Argentine art-comedies.) It’s a shame things wind up whittled down to

its two writers’ sensibilities. The more ambitious, or at least funnier, characters get picked off, leaving us with Rogen and Goldberg stand-in Baruchel, who only want to smoke weed, eat burgers and stare at the former’s 3-D television. Surely writers who toked less would come up with an ending that’s truly, awe-inspiringly, awesomely insane, rather than the fanboy anticlimax that results. Perhaps they should switch to acid.

Sofia Coppola is perhaps the only filmmaker who could make anything out of the true-life titular gang in “The Bling Ring,” namely a coterie of teens who broke into celebrities’ homes, making off with millions’ worth in designer clothing and cash. The story speaks for itself about materialism and the banality of (moderate) evil in the age of social media. The best way to handle it, if one must at all, is to embody the subjects’ brain-dead thirst for fancy stuff. The characters in “The Bling Ring” don’t think, they just do. If Google allows them to find Paris Hilton’s house, and if she broadcasts on Twitter she’ll be DJing a club on such a night, then it follows they must

break in and steal her fancy clothes — although perhaps not her dog. For about an hour, Coppola’s sixth feature is hypnotic. There’s a flatness, in style and judgment. The camera stares dead-eyed at the questionable activities of the group, which includes nice guy/unresolved metrosexual Nick (Israel Broussard), enabler

Rachel (Katie Chang) and a Valley girl (Emma Watson) home-schooled not by a Christian fundamentalist but by a devotee of The Secret (Leslie Mann). Once our anti-heroes are busted, the film suddenly does take a stance. Watson’s pampered girl goes faux-remorse, wearing pearls and telling fawning journos about

heading charities. Watson’s patently empty line readings, read in an ’80s accent, are hilarious, but they’re from a different, sillier, more satirical film. Coppola is great at portraying the laziness of the wealthy, but when it aims to say something deeper, it becomes clear it’s best when it stays shallow. MATT PRIGGE

Are we the only ones who find this whole “ball ironing” thing simultaneously disgusting and fascinating? For some reason, people are just now all amped up about that time, five years ago, when George Clooney joked to Esquire that he had the wrinkles in his old balls ironed out (the male equivalent of a labiaplasty — which

Eau de Honey Boo Boo When a press release appeared in our inbox announcing that the season premiere of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” next month would be a “watch n’ sniff” episode, we threw up in our mouths a little bit. This is a real thing, by the way — couldn’t make something like this up if we wanted to. According to the release, viewers of the TLC reality show about the morbidly obese Boo Boo gang can watch the July 17 premiere while scratching and sniffing some sort of scented card that will be distributed in issues of People magazine

on July 15. What could Eau de Boo Boo possibly smell like? Sweat, bacon and shame, with shades of Funions? Also, what kind of people would be into this sort of thing? The thought of even watching that show is unpleasant enough, without adding some sort of hillbilly aromatherapy to the experience. That said, we’re 100 percent going to grab a copy of People next month to give this thing a hearty sniff and report back. Stay tuned.

is another disgusting and fascinating thing, by the way). Now, Salon has reported that this is an actual Thing called “tackle-tightening” and that dudes are totally into it. Are they? Are grown men into paying money to have some doctor surgically freshen up their testes? Because we’re pretty sure most men we know don’t give a damn about what those things down there look like.

Rupert Murdoch: Now an eligible bachelor!

Speaking of saggy old testicles, NY Mag reports that media titan and super-rich old dude, 82-year-old Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from his 38-yearold wife Wendi Deng. This brings us to two points. One: Murdoch is a total pimp. How much of a

baller (ha ha) do you have to be when your geriatric a— feels OK about kicking your hot, under-40 wife to the curb? And two: How bad is it for 30-something women out there that it’s becoming difficult to hang on to your octogenarian man?

Someone please help Farrah already Forget Amanda Bynes — can someone out there please stage an intervention for former “Teen Mom” star Farrah Abraham? The poor girl is caught in a shame spiral of EF5 proportions. In the latest in a long and sticky string of bad life decisions, InTouch reports that Abraham has undergone her second boob job (and her fourth plastic surgery in less than three years). She is 22 years old, FYI. In other news that makes us cringe/want to adopt both her and her daughter (who is most certainly going to need extensive adult therapy one day), Abraham was just on Howard Stern’s Sirius show sharing that

she loved to masturbate to her own sex tape/ porno “Farrah Superstar: Backdoor Teen Mom.” A sex tape that co-star porn actor James Deen is purportedly not even happy to have appeared in. When even a dude who rails ladies on tape for a living is displeased to have railed you on tape, you’ve really taken a wrong turn somewhere in life. Luckily, TMZ reported Thursday that, according to a text convo the two had, Charlie “Tiger Blood” Sheen is totes willing to go on a date with her. Oh, we bet.

The Duchess of Cambridge is on a boat Evidence that the royals are just redundant figureheads: One super-important royal duty that the Duchess of Cambridge had to take care of recently included blessing the newest ship in Princess Cruises’ fleet. The only woman capable of such a task, the very pregnant Kate apparently smashed a giant champagne

bottle on the cruise ship’s helm in order to officially christen it “Royal Princess.” She then said, “I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her.” David Cameron must have been off on some sort of other really important business, because we find it hard to believe he would shirk an important political duty like this of his own volition.

This treat takes the Retro Cake

Recipe. As the summer heat rolls in, our desire to use an oven rolls out.

Warm temps are no match for the two-bite treats that Cristina Suarez Krumsick, chef of No Bake Makery, creates without ever turning on an oven. Her go-to appliance: the fridge. “You assemble the cake or pie and let the refrigerator do the work instead,” she says about the recipes found in her new cookbook, “No Bake Makery: More than 80

Two-Bite Treats Made with Lovin’, Not an Oven.” And avoiding a steamy apartment isn’t the only perk of the no-bake experience. Krumsick’s recipes don’t follow strict measurements, making her treats as laid-back as your breezy summer attitude. “With baking if you have too much of this or too much of that, you’ll ruin your cake,” says Krumsick. “The thing that’s so great about not having to use the oven is that you can play around with ingredients and it can still turn out really great.” So go ahead, sign up for dessert duty at your next barbecue.

3

Pour the cold water into a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatin over the water; let sit for two minutes.

4

Combine the raspberries, blueberries and sugar in a medium-heavy

saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring a few times, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes warm to the touch.

6

7

Stir in the gelatin mixture. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Set aside.

Combine the heavy cream and vanilla in a large bowl and mix using an electric mixer until stiff peaks form, three to four minutes.

“I made the serving size two bites because I think bite-size is not really enough,” says Krumsick. “I’d much rather have two bites of something that’s pretty indulgent than a big portion of a healthy dessert. The idea was that you can have something really indulgent, but just not too much of it.”

Spread the remaining mousse over the wafers and smooth with the spatula.

Cover with plastic wrap and freeze overnight.

Transfer the cake to a cutting board. Peel away the plastic wrap and slice into 1-inch squares.

Jason Kidd is introduced as the 18th coach in Nets franchise history, while general manager Billy King, left, looks on. / NBAE, GETTY IMAGES

Due date

Kidd due in court There was some bad news for Jason Kidd on Thursday. According to the Associated Press, he is due in Southampton, N.Y. Town Court on June 20 after pleading not guilty to misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. Nets GM Billy King said he looked into Kidd’s DWI arrest last summer in the Hamptons and even talked to his lawyers.

Welcome back: Kidd takes over Brooklyn NBA. The former New Jersey great is now the man in charge of the Nets. Jason Kidd approached his meeting with Nets general manager Billy King like many job seekers. He was nervous he might say or do something to dissuade his chances at getting the position, especially since the meeting took place shortly after his retirement from the NBA following a 19-year career with the Mavericks, Suns, Nets and Knicks. He eventually grew comfortable with the setting, especially when the discussion turned to basketball. “I went in there and talked basketball,” Kidd said. “It felt like home

and the butterflies disappeared. We just talked basketball and what I thought I could do for Brooklyn and from there it felt comfortable.” It eventually led to the Nets hiring Kidd and officially introducing him Thursday at a packed press conference overlooking the court at the Barclays Center. His wife, two of his children and Nets point NBA legend Kidd has no coaching experience, but his playing résumé speaks for itself. •

Kidd is the Nets’ all-time franchise leader in assists, 3-point field goals, steals and is second all time in minutes played.

guard Deron Williams were in attendance as well. “What stood out for me was his leadership and I’ve seen that before,” King said. “You see that up close when you talk to him and just his knowledge of the game as we talked and he was talking about different teams and their sets and how it would work with our team and how we would use it with our

personnel in a different way. To me, I think the ceiling is very, very high. He gives a great work ethic and knowledge and I think working together we can build something that can last a long time.” The search took the Nets in several directions, including looking at established coaches such as Lionel Hollins and Pacers assistant Brian Shaw, but it eventually headed in the direction of Kidd. “I was all over the place when I started,” King said. “As I started doing research, I probably went on thinking I was going to go in one direction, but the more you talk to people doing research that leads you in another direction.”

Up-tempo

Williams excited for new era Kidd will also be the fourth coach in Deron Williams’ career. Williams reportedly had differences with Jerry Sloan and Avery Johnson that led to their exits. But he endorsed the move to bring in Kidd and found the decision to implement a more up-tempo system appealing. “It definitely caught me off-guard when I first heard, but I thought it was a good move for us,” Williams said. Winslow looks like old self at Jets minicamp cycle accident during the offseason where he tore his ACL and suffered a subsequent staph infection. Head coach Rex Ryan teased that in terms of blocking, Winslow Jr. isn’t a “hired killer,” but he still thinks the veteran can add something to this inexperienced group of tight ends. “The one thing that jumps out at you is his skill and athleticism,” Ryan said. “He still has that.”
