New photos released in Times Square bombing Renewed effort. The FBI and NYPD are seeking new leads in the case. The FBI and the NYPD yesterday announced a reward of up to $65,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of a suspect or suspects involved in the unsolved 2008 bombing of an Army recruiting station in Times Square. New video surveillance footage of the suspect or suspects and new photos were also released by the FBI. “Someone, somewhere, knows something about a bomber who’s still on the run,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos said. The FBI believes the person or people responsible for this bombing may also have been behind two other bombings in New York City: one in 2005 at the British consulate and another in 2007 at the Mexican consulate. The FBI and the NYPD will be using the hashtag #BikeBomber to release information about the attacks and solicit information via Twitter. The surveillance video and photos are being displayed on digital billboards throughout the northeast, including in Times Square. The bombing occurred

in the early morning hours of March 6, 2008. The consulate bombings that the FBI suspects could be related also occurred in the early morning hours, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.; those bombs were also set by a person on a bicycle. According to the FBI, the suspect rode a blue Ross bicycle and got off his bike at West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue. The suspect then apparently placed a bomb at the Army recruiting station, lit a fuse, and fled on the bicycle south on Broadway. The bike was reportedly found in a dumpster near Madison Avenue and 38th Street. The suspect was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants of an unknown color, the FBI said. The height, weight, age, sex and race of the suspect are still unknown. While the suspect appears to have been working alone, the FBI said that it’s possible there were as many as five other people working as lookouts or as a surveillance team in Times Square at the time that the bombing occurred. Authorities are urging anyone with information to call the FBI at 212-3841000. Callers can remain anonymous.

City releases hurricane evac maps

Imam Hamid Hassan Raza

MAYOR’S OFFICE

Final updates to New York City’s hurricane evacuation zones were announced by the city yesterday. The new maps now include 600,000 residents who weren’t covered under the old zoning system. The updated zone system now places a full 37 percent of New Yorkers in an emergency evacuation zone. It also swaps out the old alphabetical

zoning system in favored of a numbered system. “The new zones incorporate the best-available data and will help the City to more effectively communicate to those most at risk, depending on the characteristics of a particular storm,” said Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway. To support the recent zoning updates, the city has also upgraded its

Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder to support mobile phones, which will help residents find their evacuation zone using GPS technology. Updates to the evacuation plan could prevent future damage from storms like superstorm Sandy, which left 42 New Yorkers dead and millions of dollars in damage, the city said. BREANNA BISHOP

The American Civil Liberties Union, the New York Civil Liberties Union and other legal organizations filed a lawsuit against the city on Tuesday on behalf of New Yorkers who say they were targeted by the NYPD’s Muslim surveillance program. Attorneys bringing the lawsuit say the program is unconstitutional. They are moving for the records of the plaintiffs to be wiped clean. One of the plaintiffs is a 20-year-old college sophomore, Asad Dandia, who co-founded a student

group called Muslims Giving Back. The group was infiltrated by an FBI informant, according to the NYCLU. Another plaintiff is the spiritual leader at a Brooklyn mosque, Masjid Al-Ansar, which has reportedly been under surveillance by the NYPD since 2008. Imam Hamid Hassan Raza said he has been visited on several occasions without reason. City attorney Celeste Koeleveld defended the Muslim surveillance program, citing the Boston Marathon bombing as evidence of “the critical importance of ‘on-theground’ research.”

Solar chargers for cell phones debut in NYC After Sandy. The outlets will give the public a place to charge their dying phones. New York City unveiled the first of 25 free solar charging stations for mobile phones yesterday, installed in response to superstorm Sandy, which wiped out power and forced residents to walk miles to charge their phones. The Street Charge stations are Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest answer to flaws in infrastructure exposed by the storm that ripped into the East Coast in October 2012 and left about 900,000 New York City residents without power. city’s five boroughs, the charging stations are part of a public-private partnership with AT&T. Powered by solar panels, they will work day or night. Six ports in each station will allow the public to charge phones, tablets and other devices even if the city’s power is out. In the first days after

the storm, some of the city’s residents walked miles to charge their electronic devices. Street Charge units were put to work this week in Union Square in Manhattan, Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn and on Governors Island, with more opening by the end of the summer, the city said. AT&T is paying for the 25 stations, with the city bearing no cost, Marissa Shorenstein, president of AT&T’s New York office said. Sandy brought a record 14-foot storm surge to lower Manhattan and inflicted an estimated $19 billion in damages on the city. The storm, which claimed more than 130 lives in the United States and Canada, left more than 8 million homes and businesses along the East Coast in the dark. REUTERS

NYPD officers were granted a warrant to search Alexander’s home for guns and drugs, but when they executed the search on May 24, they reportedly found seven pit bulls and equipment used to train dogs for dogfighting, including

Anti-gay shooting. Elliot Morales was charged with murder as a hate crime for killing Mark Carson. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced yesterday an indictment in the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Mark Carson in Greenwich Village last month. Police reported that Carson was shot by a suspect who made anti-gay comments to him. The fatal shooting was the most violent of several alleged hate crimes last month. “This young man’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the discrimination that many of our family members, coworkers and friends still face,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance. The alleged shooter, Elliot Morales, is charged with one count of murder in the second degree as a hate crime, five counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of

menacing, including one count of menacing a police officer. According to Vance, statements made on the record in court describing the May 17 incident indicate that after being chastised by a restaurant worker for urinating outside the restaurant, Morales confronted employees, barking antigay comments, displaying a gun and threatening to shoot patrons. Morales allegedly left the establishment and ran into Carson walking with another male, and made further anti-gay comments. He eventually shot Carson point-blank in the head, according to police. Vance said an NYPD officer tracked Morales down.

Tearing at the fabric

“By instilling fear, hate crimes tear at the very fabric of our communities.” Cy Vance

When confronted, Morales pointed his gun at the officer. When Morales fumbled, the officer wrested the gun away. Morales faces a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the most severe of the charges against him.

Final resting place Mayor Ed Koch’s tombstone has him listed as born almost 20 years after his real birthdate. •

The tombstone of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, who died earlier this year, is engraved with the wrong birth year. Koch was born on Dec. 12, 1924, but the birthdate on his tombstone reads “December 12, 1942.” The mistake is ironic since Koch was known for having planned the details of his burial years before his death, including what would be written on his tombstone. The former mayor, who is buried in Trinity Church Cemetery in Washington Heights, bought the plot because he said that he wanted to stay in Manhattan forever. He also chose to have inscribed a quote by journalist Daniel Pearl, who

US poll. Airlines improve performance but still get low marks Consumers are more satisfied with airlines in recent years, but the industry still gets relatively low marks — mainly due to the onboard experience, according to a new customer poll. The American Consumer Satisfaction Index — which surveys some 70,000 U.S. customers annually on more than 40 industries, ranging from apparel and hospitals to banks and insurance —

found only television and Internet service providers ranked lower. It found that full-service and fastfood restaurants, hotels and shipping companies provided consumers with a better experience. Rookie teachers woefully unprepared, report says Classroom. But the study did not typically evaluate the quality of teaching within the training program. The U.S. teacher training system is badly broken, turning out rookie educators who have little handson experience running classrooms and are quickly overwhelmed by the job, according to a report released yesterday by the National Council on Teacher Quality. The review found “an industry of mediocrity,” with the vast majority of programs earning fewer than three stars on a fourstar rating scale — and many earning no stars at all. The council, a bipartisan research and advocacy

group, spent eight years developing the methodology, fighting in court to gain access to data and analyzing the information before issuing the report. It contains detailed analysis of 608 colleges and universities with teacher training programs and partial data on 522 others. Those 1,130 institutions collectively turn out more than 170,000 novice teachers annually, about 80 percent of the new teachers entering classrooms each year. Most of the rest come from nontraditional training programs that are not necessarily affiliated with colleges, such as Teach for America. Freshly minted teachers “don’t know how to teach reading, don’t know how to master a classroom, don’t know how to use data,” said Kate Walsh, the council’s president. “The results were dismal.” REUTERS

One sexy patent case

US patent case climaxes with win for vibrator maker Couples in the United States looking to spice up their sex lives will have to do without certain adult toys after a U.S. trade panel ruled on Monday that some companies are violating a patent held by a Canadian company for a two-armed vibrator. The U.S. International Trade Commission found that vibrator maker Lelo Inc. as well as distributors and a retailer infringe on Standard Innovation Corp.’s patent for a two-armed vibrator that couples can use during intercourse. Standard Innovation, which is based in Ottawa, Ontario, and is privately held, filed an infringement complaint against

Lelo and a long list of other companies in early 2012, accusing them of infringing on Standard’s patent for the adult toys, designed to be worn while a couple has sex. On its website Standard Innovation describes the We-Vibe family of vibrators as “a global sensation.” The commission’s ruling overturns a preliminary ruling by an ITC judge, who found in January that the patent holder did not have enough commercial activity in the United States to have standing to prevail at the ITC. The full commission disagreed. It banned the sale of vibrators made by Lelo Inc. and distributed or sold by Nalpac Enterprises Ltd., Williams Trading Co., Honey’s Place Inc. and Lover’s Lane & Co.

The House of Representatives will not consider immigration legislation that does not have the support of most Republicans, Speaker John Boehner said yesterday, casting doubt on prospects for reform as the Senate prepares to vote on a bill giving millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become citizens. “I don’t see any way of bringing an immigration bill to the floor that doesn’t have a majority support of Republicans,” Boehner told reporters. Pork-infused ammo

Magic bullet against terror? Security services can now stop listening to our calls, as a simple solution to Islamist terror has been discovered in the form of pork bullets. Idaho-based company Jihawg Ammo is producing ammunition coated with piginfused paint, believing that fear of contact with the “unclean” animal will discourage terrorists. Keith, a spokesman at Jihawg, told us more. How did you come up with this? The idea started after hearing about plans for a mosque at Ground Zero, which we thought were inappropriate. We kept coming back to it over time and talking to people in the military, who said that on days when there were swine in the area, there were no attacks by terrorists. We put two and two

together and realized it’s a natural deterrent, a peaceful answer that saves the jihadists and the victims.

Assange anniversary: one year in the embassy Time saved. Confinement has been put to good use, said acting WikiLeaks chief Kristinn Hrafnsson.

What’s the recipe? It’s traditional ballistic paint, but it took a year to figure out how to infuse it with pork. I can’t share exactly how we do it — trade secret — but it’s a compound of bone, meal and flesh. What reactions have you been getting? Web traffic has gone crazy, and we’re selling 15,000 units a day. WalMart thought they were cute, but we’re mainly selling to locals — they like that it goes against political correctness. Are you worried about causing race hate? We can talk about radical Islam without being negative about Islam itself. Two of our group dropped out because they were worried, but if we’re attacked, that proves our point. MWN

“The time he saves not traveling is devoted to work, and he gets a lot done.” Kristinn Hrafnsson, Acting WikiLeaks chief

Inside the gold-framed double doors, the Ecuadorian Embassy of London is a modest apartment with white-painted walls and simple furniture. Not the most fitting residence for a world-famous hero, or villain. But since June 19, 2012, WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange has gone from pioneer to captive, forced into hiding to avoid extradition to Sweden, where charges on sexual assault await him. The Australian will be arrested if he steps outside the building, so the jet-set lifestyle has been

replaced by a single room and his laptop. DVD box sets of “The Twilight Zone” and “The West Wing” keep him company, and an ultraviolet lamp replaces daylight. Assange lives nocturnally, according to reports, working until dawn supported by heavy doses of caffeine. The 41-year-old has not been forgotten, from the crowds outside his window shouting “freedom fighter” to his generous hosts, who have granted him asylum and allowed him to cramp their workplace. Further, celebrity guests from Lady Gaga to Oliver Stone have visited, with British filmmaker Ken Loach donating a treadmill on which the captive runs miles each day.

Protesters fill the streets in Brazil Dissent. It is the latest in a wave of demonstrations the country has seen in two decades. As many as 200,000 demonstrators marched through the streets of Brazil’s biggest cities on Monday in a swelling wave of protest tapping into widespread anger at poor public services, police violence and government corruption. The marches, organized mostly through snowballing social media campaigns, blocked streets and halted traffic in more than a half-dozen cities, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Brasilia, where demonstrators climbed onto the roof of Brazil’s Congress building and then stormed it. Monday’s demonstrations were the latest in a flurry of protests in the past two weeks that have added to growing unease

over Brazil’s sluggish economy, high inflation and a spurt in violent crime. While most of the protests unfolded as a festive display of dissent, some demonstrators in Rio threw rocks at police, set fire to a parked car and vandalized the state assembly building. Vandals also destroyed property in Porto Alegre. The epicenter of Monday’s march shifted from

Sao Paulo, where some 65,000 people took to the streets late in the afternoon, to Rio. There, as protesters gathered throughout the evening, crowds ballooned to 100,000 people, local police said. At least 20,000 more gathered in Belo Horizonte. The protests have gathered pace as Brazil is hosting the Confederation’s Cup, a dry run for next year’s World Cup soccer championship. The government hopes these events, along with the 2016 Summer Olympics, will showcase Brazil as an emerging power on the global stage. Contrasting the billions in taxpayer money spent on new stadiums with the shoddy state of Brazil’s public services, protesters are using the Confedera-

The tournament got off to shaky start when police clashed with demonstrators outside stadiums at the opening matches in Brasilia and Rio. “For many years the government has been feeding corruption. CULTURE Twitter feed We check in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer.

Today, Elizabeth Banks isn’t thrilled about summer, Amanda Bynes is having some work done, Samantha Ronson is frustrated with her social network and Anna Kendrick is already thinking about Halloween. @ElizabethBanks: We all hate swimsuit shopping, right? @AmandaBynes: I’m in between nose surgeries! My eyes are black and blue because my nose is broken! I can’t wait for my nose to be done! I’ll share pics! @samantharonson: If u don’t want me to know about your party please send me an invite via Facebook. @AnnaKendrick47: Halloween 2008. Donkey ears + boxing gloves = Donkey Punch. People thought I was an angry Plushie. #NoRegrets

Dear Brad: Please cut your hair. Love, Women everywhere Brad Pitt (or is that a member of The Allman Brothers?) attended the New York premiere of his new movie “World War Z” on Monday night in New York City. I think I speak for women (and mothers) everywhere when I plead: Brad, please do something with that hair of yours. You have such a pretty face!

Scott Disick is Patrick Bateman With his product-coated hair, steely gaze, love of high fashion and dead soul, Scott Disick has channeled a distinct Patrick Bateman vibe for years. Now, fellow Kardashian baby daddy Kanye West is capitalizing on this eerie resemblance in a new promo for “Yeezus.” Disick portrays the Bret Easton Ellis character in the famous “American Psycho” scene where Bateman listens to Huey Lewis with a friend — with bloody consequences. The West promo is not a great homage. Check it out for yourself on www. metro.us. I think you’ll agree that if we knew exactly what Disick’s day job was, we would tell him not to quit it.

Brand divorced via text Pretty sure this is a marriage don’t: Russell Brand apparently divorced wife Katy Perry via text message. “He’s a very smart man, a magical man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me Dec. 31, 2011,” the singer revealed in a new interview with Vogue. And as for her rebound with John Mayer? “It’s over, I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him,” she told the mag. “Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.” Maybe it’s because they are hot and famous? Just a guess.

Munn’s eyelash problem

In 2012, Olivia Munn announced about suffering from trichotillomania, an anxiety disorder in which the sufferer pulls out his or her own hair. And according to a new interview with Marie Claire, she is still trying to overcome it. When asked what she’s working on, she replied, “Trying to overcome my social anxiety. ... It’s manifested in trichotillomania, a disorder that gives me the urge to pull out my eyelashes.” The actress is also working on another disorder, which is probably more familiar to most of us. “I struggle with wanting to work out,” she says. “I hike, surf and dance, but I think I’m going to start doing Pilates — though I’m not happy about it.”

Chastain doesn’t need arm candy When it comes to her personal life, Jessica Chastain is looking to keep things under wraps — for now, at least. “Sometimes when someone [in the press] asks me about my dating status, I get really quiet about that because I want to protect it,” the “Zero Dark Thirty” star tells E! News. “Seeing all these interviews with actors talking about loves of their lives and then they break up in a year and you’re thinking, ‘What if something happens and they end up being a total jerk?’ Then you forever have these pictures of you standing on the red carpets together.” Right! But that helps when I write about their divorce (see the Brand and Perry item, left).

Ice Cube: Still as cool as ever Hip-hop legends. Ice Cube tells us about his career and keeping it real. Ice Cube has parlayed a hardcore rap career into an entertainment empire that spans movies, television and product endorsements. But the former N.W.A. member and solo artist known for groundbreaking albums such as “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” and “Death Certificate” has no plans to switch up his politically charged style. While mainstream rap drowns in escapist tales of cars, clubs and fancy cribs, he says fans can expect “vintage Ice Cube” on his forthcoming album, “Everythang’s Corrupt.” “Everything that you’ve ever gotten from me, I deliver on this record,” he says. “My style is straight street knowledge. I don’t really cater to what’s going on in hiphop or what’s going on in the industry, so to speak. I just dial in on Ice Cube fans and try to keep them satisfied, and everybody else gotta get in where they fit in. I don’t want to have to worry about no program director here or no A&R there. That makes it a drag. And being independent, I can just go in the studio and do what I

feel.” While he wraps up his 10th album, the actor, writer, producer and director is in talks with distributor New Line Cinema to close out the “Fri-

day” franchise with final installment “Last Friday.” “We’re trying to get it done,” he says. “New Line has really been neutered by Time Warner, so they can’t do as many mov-

ies as they usually do per year. So it’s just a fight to get ‘Last Friday’ on their schedule. They only got three or four movies to do a year, and urban comedy is probably low on the to-

tem pole.” Cube — born O’Shea Jackson — is also working on a feature film about Compton collective N.W.A. that will reunite him with “Friday” director F. Gary Gray. He says the movie could hit theaters by mid-2014, and the cast may include his son O’Shea Jr., a budding rapper who goes by the moniker OMG (Oh My Goodness). “I want my son OMG to play me. He looks like me and he can act, so he can do it,” Cube says. “I just had to meet with [Gray] and Dr. Dre to work on the script and keep getting it tighter and tighter, so we’re in the process of casting the movie now, so it’s full steam ahead. This N.W.A. movie, it’s still my dream. That’s what I’ve been dying to make.”

Chuck D still on point, Ice Cube says Ice Cube isn’t shy about revealing that his favorite rapper is a tourmate, Public Enemy’s Chuck D. “It’s like being on tour with your big brother,” Cube says. “He’s just one of those dudes who — pound for pound, lyric for lyric — has done the most out of any emcee, because he ain’t just rapping no bulls—. ... It’s something real. And even when rapping about bulls— is popular, I mean, he still stick to what he do. That’s great. For artists like myself, and him being one of my peers and me really looking up to Chuck, it’s good that he sticks to the script.”

Transplants are, from left, Aston, Barker and Armstrong. / ESTEVAN ORIOLE

Interview. Transplants singer Rob Aston on the glue that binds this all-star power trio. With the members constantly working on a multitude of projects, it’s no wonder that it took so long for Transplants to release new material. To say that drummer Travis Barker, guitarist Tim Armstrong and singer Rob Aston have kept themselves busy since disbanding in 2006 is an understatement. After eight years, the trio is back with a new album, “In a Warzone,” which still blends punk rock with hip-hop, like on previous releases, but this time the focus is more on punk, says Aston. “We’ve all grown up listening to different types of music, but punk rock has always been the backbone for all of us,” he says. “I personally think that’s the best type of music we make together.” To someone who has never listened to you before, how would you describe Transplants? If you listen to either our first or second album, it’s a little harder to describe because there’s so much going on. There are punk rock elements, hip-hop elements, dub elements … all kinds of stuff going on. But I always tell people that we’re a punk rock band. We do what we want, and

You recognize Armstrong from Rancid and Barker from Blink-182.

that’s punk rock. Were scheduling conflicts between the three of you the main reason why it took so long to make this album? We took a break after Warped Tour in 2005, but I guess we worked on the new album for about three years before we turned it in. Obviously it wasn’t three years straight, because everyone’s busy with other projects. So we recorded when we could, and we didn’t want to rush this album or turn If you go

in something half-a—ed. When you’re gone for a long time, you can’t come back with just anything. We had to give it our best, and that’s what we did. I think it’s our best work by far. Are there any guest vocalists on the new album worth mentioning? This time around we only put a few guests on the album. We have Paul Wall on one song, and Bun B and Equipto on another. But that’s it, just three rappers. It’s kind of funny that this is a punk rock album, but the guests we have are rappers. But that’s true to Transplants form. We’ve always put people on our albums that you normally wouldn’t think would be on an album like ours.

Now in its fifth year, the BAMcinemafest focuses on American independents — both upcoming heavies with big names and obscurities that languish without distributors. A few outside voices still get in, from the likes of Uganda and Pakistan, and that’s a good thing.

‘Drinking Buddies’ Joe Swanberg sells out, sort of; the filmmaker prone to deliberately sloppy camera work gets an actual cinematographer, as well as a name cast. Olivia Wilde plays a brewery worker in love with her engaged bestie (Jake Johnson). Swanberg has done illicit love before, but the film retains his better qualities. ‘I Used to Be Darker’ Matthew Porterfield follows his stunner “Putty Hill with another survey of people struggling to ignore personal tragedy (here, it’s divorce). Less experimental than “Putty, it goes deeper into the void of lives violently uprooted, both in youth and, even scarier, middle age. ‘It Felt Like Love’ Straight out of deep south

Expect roaming cats, jarring editing and much, much more. — on the precipice of disaster, but never falling over. ‘Northern Light’ Though concerned with rural life in wintry economic times, Nick Bentgen’s documentary captures all of life, not just the bad stuff. It’s one beautiful image after another, showing its Michigan subjects trying to win at various competitions. Ups and downs are captured, but the impression that comes off is people just keepin’ on keepin’ on.

TERENCE STAMP The acting legend talks about his new ďŹ lm, “UnďŹ nished Song,â€? as well as “Man of Steel.â€?

KNEEL BEFORE ZOD NICK WALL

British actor Terence Stamp has just about perfected cranky, from playing General Zod in “Superman 2 to his roles in “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert or “The Limey. In his latest, “Unfinished Song, he puts all that practice to good use playing the misanthropic but devoted husband of the sunny and cheerful terminally ill Marion (Vanessa Redgrave). How easy does it make your job when Vanessa Redgrave is playing your

wife? It’s not easy, it’s just a great blessing, really. A lot of people have remarked that the fact that we’re this couple who’ve been together for 30 years is just kind of a given. It’s not spoken about, you know? Also, having you and Christopher Eccleston play father and son is inspired casting. When he was cast, my question to the director was, “How’s his voice? — meaning, “What’s his dialect? Because in

music that I like. So when he rucked up on the set, he had my voice down pat.

That’s funny because that was what I had to lose. I thought, “I’m never going to be able to play Hamlet, I’m never going to be able to play Macbeth talking like that. I’m always amazed by the workings of the universe. It’s like a wheel, isn’t it? Everything turns round.

In an interview last year, director Terence Davies complained about how young English actors are all trying to sound like they’re from South London nowadays.

What do you think of “Man of Steel, wherein Michael Shannon takes over for your villainous character, General Zod? I’m kind of sad. But to be honest with you, I think

Dick Donner’s Superman movies were the benchmark, really. I mean, every kind of comic-book movie of that genre took from those first two Superman movies, you know? So I would be very surprised if it was as funny and as sophisticated. But then, the youth of today is not interested in that. I think if Donner’s movie came out now, it wouldn’t be as charming as it was then.

You started as a serious stage actor. I came to New York at 23 and was on Broadway for this play “Gemini,” which was a comedy. I honed my chops over three years of doing that play. What was fascinating to me was learning how an audience works. You just learn these things about comic timing. And that grandfathers as you go, from one job to another job. In the era of YouTube, you can find a 1975 colonoscopy of yours. You have no idea what’s out there.

TV LAND

You’ve said one thing you like about your “Exes” character is that he’s a bit opaque, and you can play him in different ways. This season, we get to see a bit more variance. We peel away revelations about what his marriage was like. There’s depth to him that doesn’t show all the time. There’s broadness at times. There’s cynicism. It depends on the plot.

Hello, Newman Wayne Knight’s legacy is secure, thanks to two major contributions to 1990s culture: Newman on “Seinfeld” and greedy Dennis Nedry in “Jurassic Park.” Knight is back with sitcom work on TV Land’s “The Exes,” starting its third season tonight at 10:30 p.m. But like many longtime workhorses, there’s more to him, including films, other shows and Broadway. For instance, did you know he was on a 1980s sketch comedy show with Emma Thompson?

Do you consciously try to avoid some of the darker tones of Newman or Dennis Nedry? That’s more in the public’s eye than mine. I don’t know if I’m as versatile as I’d like to pretend. [Laughs] The thing is, if you play two iconic characters who are evil guys, if you do it well, then that’s what people want to see you do. I spent 10 years trying to change that, but after awhile you just go, “Oh, whatever.” Some of your earlier shows, including the 1985 British-American sketch comedy “Assaulted Nuts,” with you and Emma Thompson, are now online.

You were also on Broadway in the play “Art,” which was written by Yasmina Reza, who wrote “God of Carnage.” “Art” was perhaps my favorite experience onstage. It was very challenging. The script was coming from the French through the British to America. It’s almost like you’re translating an alien script. I had a big scene where I had to find a way to break down every night emotionally. The great thing about the play is, it’s 90 minutes, without an act break. Her plays are incredibly great acting exercises. They’re just trampolines that you can bounce on as high as you can go.

DIY furniture makeover Decor. Transform a set of chairs or desk into a work of art.

Before you toss that handme-down dresser, Barb Blair suggests you try giving it a paint job. In her new book, “Furniture Makeover,” the artsy designer and founder of Knack Studios arms aspiring DIY-ers with knowledge, courage and easy-to-

Tips

Knobby needs “For changing out knobs, which I always feel is a must, hit up the sales section at Anthropologie where you can find great ones for $2 and $3,” says Blair. “Hobby Lobby and World Market are other good sources.”

follow instructions. “One of the biggest things I hear from people is, ‘I’m so afraid to do that to this piece,’” says Blair. “That’s what I tried to dispel with the book. I wanted to take away the fear of painting furniture. It takes some time, yes ... but it’s not rocket science.” Here, she shows us how to spruce up curb-side mirrors.

Some handy tips

Use a medium sanding sponge to sand down whatever piece you want to paint, whether it’s a dresser, stool or desk. “I prefer sanding sponges over paper because they’re easier to hold,” says Blair.

Hit up the Oops paint section at SherwinWilliams or Home Depot for cheap options. “They always have a section where they mixed the wrong color of paint or the customer didn’t like the color once it was mixed and so a gallon of paint is around $5. Some of my best colors come from the Oops pile.”

“I am pretty particular about my paintbrush,” confesses Blair. She uses Purdy nylon brushes for latex paint. “They’re really soft and they make a huge difference.”

TINA CHADHA

tina.chadha@metro.us

Q&A

Why should people reimagine an old piece of furniture?

So many people come to me and say, “I’ve had my grandpa’s or grandma’s [furniture] in storage for 10 years.” And then they see my book and say, “Oh, that’s the exact same piece I’ve had in

my attic.” And if it’s your grandpa’s piece and it’s sitting in your attic, you’re not enjoying it. If you bring it down and DIY it and stick it in your foyer or bedroom and love it, by all means do it.”

22

And if you’re doing a big job, Blair says to roll the flat surfaces with a foam roller. “It’s absolutely seamless and smooth.”

Beauty is in the details

“If I’m doing a desk or chest of drawers, I love to line them with a fun paper that coordinates with the paint and the knob. It’s nice when you open your drawers and see a pretty pattern. Details are just something I pay a lot of attention to.”

Builders’ confidence a good sign for the market Real estate. The housing recovery is gaining traction.

Builders aren’t just conďŹ dent that their homes are level. They’re conďŹ dent in the market. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA

Confidence among U.S. homebuilders surged this month, staging its biggest gain since 2002 in one of the strongest signs yet that the housing recovery is gaining traction. A majority of homebuilders say conditions for new construction are favorable, rather than poor, for the first time since the housing crisis began seven years ago, according to a closely watched index released on Monday. Executives in the homebuilding industry say a steady rise in home prices, tighter inventories of properties up for sale and a slowing trend in foreclosures have helped

the housing market regain its stride over the past year. Even so, the big jump in confidence registered this month by the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market index was surprisingly robust. Pete Flint, chief executive of online real estate company Trulia, said conditions were just right for confidence to blossom, with supply of available homes still trailing a rising tide of buying sentiment. “We are in the early days of a real estate market recovery, he said. “The supply of homes for sale

is still relatively small because sellers are reluctant to list in a rising market. They want to sell at the top. And there’s good reason for further bullishness, said Stan Humphries, chief economist from Zillow, an online real estate company, because annualized new home sales aren’t even back to their historical average. “At this point, I suspect many of the constraints preventing builders from building faster are logistical and land-related versus concerns about future demand, he said.

Quoted

“The supply of homes for sale is still relatively small because sellers are reluctant to list in a rising market. They want to sell at the top. Peter Flint Chief executive of online real estate company Trulia

Flagging a more robust outlook for profits, the stronger-than-expected data buoyed homebuilder shares. But investors were mostly focused on whether the Federal Reserve would reinforce its commitment to supporting the economic recovery at its meeting yesterday and today. The market wants clues from the Fed on when it would start cutting back on its $85 billion in bond purchases every month. Those purchases have stimulated the economy and kept mortgage rates near record lows in recent years. While a recent spike in market rates has raised concerns about the headwinds that might affect the recovery, home loans remain cheap by historical standards, a trend that bodes well for the market. “It’s all about creating a base that grips,” explains LA-based makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, who has brushed up the likes of Lea Michele and Miley Cyrus. “For lipstick that lasts and doesn’t bleed, apply a light layer of concealer or powder to your lips before adding

color. Or use a lip pencil that is the same color as your lipstick. Draw the entire lip and color it inside. The pencil is matte and creates a solid base. Avoid products that are moisturizing and contain emollients, such as lip balm, which will slide off your skin.”

“Glitter may be a summer festival must, but don’t use it on your eyelids. It’s a loose particle, so you’d need a creamy base to press the glitter on. And keep away from creamy eye shadow, which will smudge,” warns Ingles-

“Rule No. 1: Use the right foundation for your skin type,” says Inglessis. “If you have oily skin, don’t go for a liquid foundation, but one that’s powderbased. A face primer will give you a good base. It

absorbs excess oil and mattifies your skin, ensuring that makeup doesn’t move. But if you sweat a lot, it may be best to not use anything other than a good SPF and a concealer or powder as [a] cover up.”

Designed by Realmac Software, who made the attractive to-do list app Clear, it puts all the filters in the middle of the screen, allowing one to better judge what one’s doing to the pic before it goes out to the world. There’s also no dorky borders. But is that enough? It wouldn’t be, but there’s also this: The social media aspect has been downplayed. Yes, there are buttons handy that allow one to pester your Twitter buds with pics that look like they were taken circa 1978.

CHRYSLER BUILDING

But where Instagram ends with your pictures spreading throughout the Global Village, Analog Camera makes it more of an option. You can just keep your business to yourself, rather than it being in everyone’s faces. Alas, it’s not completely its own thing: Like Instagram, the filters are kind of similar. And Analog doesn’t allow for widescreen vista shots. There’s an entire chunk of the smartphone screen going to waste, fellas. Summation: Instagram is for the oversharing kids, Analog is for the undersharing olds.

Talking Tom Cat Platform: iOS Price: Free Genre: Cats

Though films like “Cats and Dogs will have us think the former are snooty hellbeasts, the truth is cats are superior to dogs: Smarter, more emotionally complex and far less needy when it comes to waste. Even the cat in Talking Tom Cat is strangely smart. Standing in an alley way, he lets you have your way with him. You can pet his belly and make him purr, give him milk, even give him a live bird. You can also, if you’re sadist,

Google aims to abolish child porn pics with new database Google announced plans over the weekend to remove child pornography images from the Web by using a new, picture-sharing database. The program, which the Telegraph reported will be operational within the year, will allow search engines and other Web companies to swap information about images of children being abused or raped. between Web engines and — hopefully — speed up the process of tracking down and universally erasing these types of pictures. In an e-mailed statement to Mashable, Google Director of Communications and Public Affairs Scott Rubin said, “We have a zero-tolerance attitude to child sexual abuse imagery online. The fight to remove these images from the Internet is a global one, and we hope these measures will help in that important battle.

TIPS FOR BUILDING A BETTER SALAD

Joy’s Healthy Bite

JOY BAUER, MS, RD WWW.JOYBAUER.COM Health and Wellness expert for the ‘Today’ show and New York Times best-selling author.

If you’re on a summer mission to eat light and healthy, choosing a veggiepacked salad seems like a no-brainer. But salads can pack more calories and fat than you think. A classic Cobb salad with chopped bacon, egg, blue cheese, avocado and creamy dressing can cost you more than 1,000 calories and 80 grams of fat! For some people, that’s more than half their day’s worth of calories. With that said, don’t give up on salads — just follow these strategic steps and you’ll chow down on a slimming and scrumptious meal that fills you up, not out.

1

Start with a strong foundation: Up the nutrition ante by choosing a base that provides important nutrients like folic acid, iron, beta carotene and lutein. Nix anemic iceberg and

instead go for mesclun greens, baby spinach or a spring mix that includes a variety of dark green lettuces. For less than 20 calories per 2-cup serving, you’re o to a great start.

or shrimp. If you’re vegetarian or just want to mix it up, choose cubed tofu, beans and/or lentils. Stay away from fatty meats like bacon and salami, and skip anything fried or in heavy sauce.

2

4

Pile on the veggies: Take advantage of fresh vegetables and load them on top of your greens. Choose a variety of colors to get the most health beneďŹ ts — red bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas, cucumbers and red onions are all great choices. Stick with raw, steamed, grilled or roasted vegetables and steer clear of anything fried or swimming in oily marinades.

Dress it up lightly: Dressing can take a salad from light and nutritious to ferociously fattening. One tablespoon of your

average vinaigrette is about 80 calories, and one tablespoon of creamy ranch is about 100 calories (restaurants use between 4 and 6 tablespoons — yikes!). Ask for the dressing on the side when ordering and whenever possible, choose light, lowcalorie or low-fat options.

3

Don’t forget the protein: Your salad becomes a meal when you add protein. If you’re opting for animal protein, select a lean source such as egg whites, skinless chicken or turkey breast, water-packed chunk light tuna, wild salmon

28

Top it o

Pick one extra Extras add another dimension and avor to your combo of greens, vegetables and lean protein. While some of these are packed with nutrients, they’re also packed with calories, so they should be added sparingly. Luckily, a little of these high-fat goodies goes a long way, so you won’t need more than one of the following (each with between 40 and 70 calories): •

2 tablespoons cheddar, Parmesan, goat, Swiss or feta cheese

•

1 tablespoon chopped walnuts, pecans or sliced almonds

•

1 tablespoon sunower or pumpkin seeds

•

1 ounce avocado

•

10 small olives

•

Âź cup croutons

•

2 tablespoons dried cranberries or raisins

Don’t be shady, wear the right sunglasses Tips. The art of choosing a pair of sunnies goes beyond what looks good on you. When it comes to eye health, most damage comes from UV light. During summertime, when we spend more time outside, the risk greatly increases. “Sunlight literally cooks the retina,” says optometrist Dr. Rupe Hansra, LensCrafters’ senior director of eye care. “Over time, it becomes yellow and hard, and we begin to lose good vision.” Wearing sunglasses year-round protects the retina from damaging

UVA and UVB light and can help delay the onset of cataracts, s macular degeneration and even basal cell carcinomas on the eyelids. “The most common part of the body for skin cancer is the tip of the nose,” Dr. Hansra says. “The second is the lower eyelid, which is very delicate and susceptible to sun damage.” So how do you choose a good pair? Here are Dr. Hansra’s tips:

Just like sunscreen, look for a number “For eye protection, a label that says UV 400 is what people should look

for on sunglasses,” he says. Not sure about your glasses’ protection level? Your local LensCrafters or optometrist can test the UV prescription.

Size counts “Typically, bigger is better. Choose large sunglasses that wrap around and block extraneous light coming from the side.”

Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the macula, where color and 20/20 vision occurs. Besides UV light, genetics and smoking, obesity hastens its decline: “I always tell patients: What’s good for your heart is good for the eye,” Dr. Hansra says. “Beta-carotene, omega-3s and, most of all, lutein keep eyes healthy. Lutein is in green, leafy vegetables and most berries.”

Pupil pointers A report from the Healing The Eye and Wellness Center in Florida said that sunglasses harm vision by interfering with pupil dilation, which happens naturally to protect the macula. But you shouldn’t worry, Dr. Hansra says. “When you wear sunglasses, your pupils dilate slightly,” he says. “As long as you have sunglasses with UV 400 protection, pupil dilation isn’t a concern.”

Get ’em polarized 30-second lifesaver

“For driving, everyone should wear polarized sunglasses to cut down glare, which is related to so many accidents. Polarized sunglasses not only save your eyes but could save your life, too.”

In this new weekly section, we’ll have an expert give us one easy tip that can change your life. This week’s comes from Dr. Linda Franks, medical director of NYC’s Gramercy Park Dermatology and spokeswoman for The Skin Cancer Foundation.

She echoes the sun safety sentiment. •

“Protect your scalp, face and neck from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays with tightly woven, wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.”

Have a little faith in religion Re: ‘What’s faith done for anyone?’ (Metro, June 18) Letter writer Amanda Canetti asks a good question. What good is religion? I lament that so many people feel this way — they see wars over religion, they see believers persecuting others — and all because of a “matter of opinion.” Yet this “opinion” can and has done lots Online

of good for many. The nasty, extremist voices usually speak the loudest and give religion a bad image, while the loving voices are drowned out. They are there, though, and always will be. Just look around. ANNIE FERRIS, VIA EMAIL

Wars have historically been fought over resources, even when religion has been used to justify them. Freedom of religion is a right in America. Most religions share the requirement that love and compassion be cultivated and that we not allow our differences to separate us. Amen to that. LINDA WHITTAKER, VIA EMAIL

Mattingly returns to the Bronx Many Yankee fans in their 30s probably had the famous Don Mattingly returns to the Bronx “Hit Manâ€? posters on their walls in tribute to the former Yankee first baseman’s dominant seasons in the mid1980s. Today’s doubleheader will be their chance to express appreciation for Mattingly in a setting other than OldTimer’s Day as he returns to the Bronx for the second time since leaving with Joe Torre following the 2007 season. When the Yankees signed Kevin Youkilis in December in the wake of Alex Rodriguez’s hip injury, they liked how he hit left-handed pitchers and grinded out at-bats. They also were aware of his recent back troubles. General manager Brian Cashman said yesterday Youkilis has a herniated disk in his back discovered after an MRI. Mid-major talent

Wolters could be hidden gem late Nate Wolters is a bit of a mystery because he was an under-the-radar high school player who wasn’t prominent on the AAU circuit, and then went to a midmajor program. But Wolters feels he has a lot to offer should the Knicks grab him. “I’ve watched [the Knicks] a lot because they were on national TV a lot, and they definitely need a point guard. They like to spread the floor out and shoot a lot of 3s, so I think I’d fit in perfectly,â€? Wolters said. “Jason Kidd just retired, and Raymond Felton is a solid point guard, so I definitely feel I can add to it. ‌ I’m really good with the pick-and-roll game, and I know they run a ton of pick-androll.â€? The Knicks hosted another workout yesterday with specific needs in mind. Now that both Jason Kidd and Rasheed Wallace have retired, and Pablo Prigioni is still debating whether to return to the team or go back to Argentina, there are a couple of voids at two of the most important spots on the roster — backup point guard and depth in the post. Among the names at the workout were Louisville center Gorgui Dieng and South Dakota State point guard Nate Wolters. The latter will most certainly be available by

All I care about is winning and whatever it takes, so I don’t think I’ll see a coach again that’ll drive me like him, said Dieng. “Wherever I go, I won’t have a problem. He even went as far as to say he’d rather fall to a stable franchise versus a lottery team, because he wants to stick in the league as long as possible. “[Pitino] said I can go anywhere from 12 to 20, [but] when it comes to draft pick, I don’t really care. Harvey, Mets eek out win

New era

Report: Vigneault signs deal with Rangers After a verbal agreement over the weekend, the Rangers have reportedly inked Alain Vigneault to a deal to officially become their next head coach. The deal is for five years and $10 million, according to multiple sources. Vigneault, 52, reportedly received a similar offer from Dallas, where he interviewed for the vacant job as well. He was fired by the Canucks on May 22 after his team was swept

Harvey lost his nohitter on an infield hit by Jason Heyward in which Lucas Duda didn’t cover first, but he was sterling as usual in earning his sixth win this season.

Harvey was just the ďŹ rst young ace pitching yesterday. Check out www.metro.us for coverage of Zack Wheeler’s debut. / GETTY IMAGES

He finished with a line of seven innings, three runs and a career-high 13 strikeouts. All three runs scored in the eighth
