The suspect / NYPD
Suspect sketch released in sex assault Police have released a sketch of the suspect they say sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in a South Street Seaport bathroom last week while he was shopping with his grandmother. The boy and his grandmother were at Pier 17 at 89 South Street, cops said. They had just finished when the boy went to the third-floor bathroom at 7:30 p.m. The boy reportedly told police he went to a urinal, and he did not notice his alleged assailant enter. The suspect allegedly lured the boy into a bathroom stall where he attempted to perform oral sex on him. Police say the suspect appears to be between the ages of 30 and 45. They said he has brown and grey hair with facial hair and was last seen wearing a white shirt and grey sweatpants. Police urge anyone with information to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Mayor in hot water over policing gaffe Stop-and-frisk. He said whites are stopped too much under the NYPD practice. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come under fire for some comments on a radio show regarding stopand-frisk. The mayor declared that critics who say the NYPD “disproportionately” targets minorities are wrong, as the racial breakdown of stops is proportionate to the racial breakdown of reported descriptions of suspects. “I think we disproportionately stop whites too much and minorities too little,” Bloomberg said. “They just keep saying, ‘Oh, it’s a disproportionate percentage of a particular ethnic group,’” he added. “That may be, but it’s not a disproportionate percentage of those who witnesses and victims describe as committing the murder.” The mayor’s office said that over 90 percent of descriptions of murder suspects are reported as black and Latino. Black and Latino New Yorkers comprise 87 percent of all stops. His comments sparked outrage among many, including Reverend Al Sharpton, who called on the mayor to apologize for his comments.
NYPD. East Flatbush shooting wounds 8 at house party An East Flatbush outdoor house party turned bloody on Saturday at 1 a.m. at the hands of a jilted partygoer, cops reported. Cops said preliminary reports indicate the shooter was either denied entrance to the party or kicked out, which sparked a dispute.

The shooter reportedly left and then returned later and opened fire wounding eight people. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to police reports. No arrests have been made so far, but an investigation is underway, police said. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

dering for attention. Some of the candidates running for mayor in this year’s race were also quick to jump in the fray, including Comptroller John Liu and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. Liu called the mayor’s comments “just plain weird.” “I understand that we’re in a campaign season and everybody wants to do something right for
their campaign rather than help us get out of this terrible situation where a disproportionate percentage of the crime is committed by a group of young kids that just don’t have any future,” Bloomberg said. “We’ve got to focus on that.”

Five charged in alleged ‘Evil Spirit’ scam Five Chinese nationals were charged with trying to swindle a Chinese woman out of thousands of dollars through a ruse to get rid of “evil spirits.” Jun Liang, Xiumei He, Yae Chen, Huahuo Chen, and Jingchang Quan all attempted to carry out the “Evil Spirit” scam, where a victim is told
they’re cursed and that they should place all their valued possessions into a bag for “cleansing,” which results in the bag’s contents being stolen, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said. Members of the NYPD set up a sting, which resulted in their arrests. BREANNA BISHOP

Declaration of Independence on display We the people. Two founding documents will be presented together. New Yorkers looking for a meaningful Fourth of July need look no further than Manhattan, as two of the country’s most important
historic documents are on display at the New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. From July 1-3, the library will display an original copy of the Bill of Rights and a copy of the Declaration of Independence written in hand by Thomas Jefferson. In the library’s copy, Jefferson underlined words and passag-
es that were cut from the final version. “As a prime source of free information and education, libraries are the true foundation of our democracy of informed citizens,” NYPL president Tony Marx said. The Declaration was completed on July 1. Before it was ratified on July 4, several changes were made, including the removal of a
long piece of text in which Jefferson passionately condemned slavery. The library’s copy of the Bill of Rights was last displayed several decades ago. It is one of at least 14 copies sent to the states for ratification in 1789.

NYC shows its pride at LGBT march Largest ever. An estimated 2 million people turned out for the annual gay pride celebration. Millions took to the streets of Midtown and Greenwich Village yesterday to celebrate NYC Pride March 2013. The parade capped off a weekend of events celebrating gay rights that took place across the city. Heritage of Pride, which organizes the event, said that up to 2 million people usually turn out for the celebration. This year, they predicted that number would increase by 10 to 15 percent because of the Supreme Court’s recent decision overturning the Defense of Marriage Act.

Marriage ceremonies of gay and lesbian couples went ahead since a panel of the appeals court in San Francisco removed its stay on Proposition 8 on Friday. / GETTY IMAGES
A Supreme Court justice yesterday rejected a longshot bid to halt same-sex marriages in California, days after the high court let stand a trial judge’s order declaring the ban unconstitutional. Supporters of the gay marriage ban known as Proposition 8, which California voters approved in 2008, asked the high court on Saturday to overrule a Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals order that lifted an injunction barring samesex unions. “I think it’s time for proponents of Prop 8 to stop trying to stop people from getting married and
turn their attention to something else,” said Ted Boutrous, a lawyer for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which sponsored the federal court challenge to Prop 8. Marriage ceremonies of gay and lesbian couples happened since a panel of the appeals court in San Francisco removed its stay on Proposition 8 on Friday. The stay had been in force while the decision striking down the socalled Prop 8, a state constitutional amendment, was appealed to the Supreme Court. Political supporters of the measure were left to appeal the case because state elected officials declined to defend it. REUTERS

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry ended a diplomacy mission yesterday without an agreement on resuming Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, but said gaps had been narrowed and he would return to the region soon. “I’m pleased to tell you that we have made real progress on this trip. And I believe that with a little more work, the start of final status negotiations could be within reach,” he told a news conference before his departure from Tel Aviv’s airport. “We started out with very wide gaps, and we have narrowed those considerably,” he said, with-
out elaborating. Over four busy days, Kerry met Israeli and Palestinian leaders repeatedly and separately to try to find a compromise for reviving direct talks, stalled since late 2010 in a dispute over Jewish settlements on occupied land Palestinians want for a state. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said negotiations cannot resume until Israel halts settlement-building, which most countries deem illegal, in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas it captured in a 1967 Middle East war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to declare a new moratorium following a partial, 10-month construction halt that ended in September 2010. Neither side gave any sign they had budged from those positions. REUTERS

Ecuador’s president says Snowden’s fate in hands of Russia Asylum. Snowden has not been able to leave the Moscow international airport. Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said yesterday the fate of former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden is in the hands of the authorities in Russia, where he is holed up in hope of obtaining asylum in the South American nation. Correa said his government cannot begin considering asylum for Snowden, wanted by Washington for leaking confidential information about a surveillance program, until he reaches Ecuador or an Ecuadorean embassy. “It’s up to the Russian authorities if he can leave the Moscow airport for
an Ecuadorean embassy,” Correa said in an interview with Reuters in the coastal city of Portoviejo. “He will be treated just like any other citizen even though he does not have a passport. We are clear that this is a special situation.” Correa’s comments provide further confirmation Ecuador is unlikely to help Snowden escape his current limbo. Snowden’s passport has been revoked, and countries around the world are under pressure not to let him continue his journey. Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected U.S. calls to expel Snowden to the United States. He says Snowden should choose a destination and leave the Moscow airport as soon as possible. REUTERS

Egyptians flood streets to demand Morsi ouster Demonstration. It was the largest protest since the 2011 uprising that overthrew Morsi’s predecessor. Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians flooded into the streets on the first anniversary of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi’s inauguration to demand that he resign in the biggest challenge so far to rule by his Muslim Brotherhood. Waving national flags and chanting “Get out! a crowd of more than 200,000 massed on Cairo’s central Tahrir Square. “The people want the fall of the regime! they shouted, echoing the Arab Spring rallying cry that brought down former President Hosni Mubarak
— this time yelling it not against an aging dictator but against the first elected leader in Egypt’s 5,000-year recorded history. While the main protests were peaceful, at least one Morsi supporter was shot dead and 37 people injured in fighting in the town of Beni Suef, south of Cairo. If you find the first two digits of your zip code immediately call: 1-888-752-7147 NEW YORK - Today’s announcement by CompTek has the Free TV Hotlines ringing off the hook. That’s because NYC area residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication are getting Free TV channels thanks to an amazing razor-thin invention called Clear-Cast®. NYC area residents who call the Toll Free Hotlines before the 48-hour order deadline to get Clear-Cast can pull in Free TV channels with crystal clear digital picture and no monthly bills . This announcement is being so widely advertised because a U.S. Federal law makes TV broadcasters transmit their signals in digital format, which allows everyone to receive these over-the-air digital signals for free with no monthly bills. Here’s how it works. Clear-Cast, the sleek micro antenna device with advanced technology links up directly to pull in the Free TV signals being broadcast in your area with crystal clear digital picture and no monthly bills. Clear-Cast was invented by a renowned NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame scientist who currently holds 23 U.S. Gov’t issued patents. For the past 20 years, he has specialized in developing antenna systems for NASA, Motorola, XM Satellite Radio and companies around the world. His latest patent-pending invention, ClearCast, is a sleek micro antenna device engineered to pull in the Free TV signals through advanced technology with no cable, satellite or internet connection and no monthly bills. “Clear-Cast is being released to the general public because we just don’t think people should keep paying for TV when they can get it for free,” said Conrad Miller, Manager of Operations at CompTek. “There’s never a monthly bill to pay and all the channels you get with Clear-Cast are absolutely free. So you see, Clear-Cast is not like cable or satellite. It was engineered to access solely the over-the-air signals that include all the top rated national and regional networks, like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, CW and about 90% of the most watched TV shows like America’s Got Talent, NCIS, 60 Minutes, American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, The Bachelorette, Person of Interest, CSI, The Mentalist, Two and a Half Men, Sunday Night Football plus news, weather and more all for free with no monthly bills,” Miller said. “That’s why Clear-Cast is such a great alternative for everyone who is sick and tired of paying expensive cable and satellite bills every month,” he said. “People who get Clear-Cast will say it feels like getting an extra paycheck every month. You see, with Clear-Cast you’ll receive free over-the-air broadcast channels with crystal clear digital picture, not the cable or satellite only channels. So being able to eliminate those channels puts all the money you were spending back in your pocket every month,” Miller said. And here’s the best part. The sleek micro
antenna device called Clear-Cast is so technically advanced it pulls in even more of the channels being broadcast in your area for Free with no monthly bills. That way you can channel surf through the favorite TV shows. The number of shows and channels you’ll get depends on where you live. People living in large metropolitan areas may get up to 53 static-free channels, while people in outlying areas will get less. That means even if you’re in a rural area that just pulls in NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and PBS broadcasts there’s hundreds of shows each year to watch for free. Consumers report that the crystal clear picture quality with Clear-Cast is the best they’ve ever seen. That’s because you get virtually all pure uncompressed signals direct from the broadcasters for free. Clear-Cast was engineered to link up directly like a huge outdoor directional antenna but in a lightweight, slim-line package. Its sturdy copper alloy and polymer construction will most likely far outlast your TV. It just couldn’t be any easier to get Free over-the-air digital TV shows with ClearCast. Simply plug it into your TV, place ClearCast on a window pane and run autoscan. It works on virtually any model TV and is easily hidden out of sight behind a curtain or window treatment. Thousands of NYC area residents are expected to call to get Clear-Cast because it
N NEVER PAY A BILL AGAIN: New Yorkers will be on the lookout for their postal carrier because thousands of Clear-Casts will soon be delivered to lucky NYC area residents who beat the 48-hour order deadline and live in any of the zip code areas listed below. Everyone is getting Clear-Cast because it pulls in nothing but Free TV channels with no cable, satellite or internet connection and no monthly bills.
just doesn’t make any sense to keep paying for TV when you can get hundreds of shows absolutely free. So, NYC area residents lucky enough to find their zip code listed in today’s publica-
tion need to immediately call the Free TV Hotline before the 48-hour deadline to get Clear-Cast that pulls in Free TV with crystal clear digital picture. If lines are busy keep trying, all calls will be answered. N

D’oh! Psych and ‘The Simpsons’ Professor: Brian P. Meier School: Gettysburg College Course: This class asks hard-hitting psychology questions of TV’s favorite family: Is Homer naturally careless, or did childhood trauma bring about his hedonistic state? What about Nelson’s rage at perceived happiness in others? We won’t even start on Maggie’s pacifier.
Zombies, Serial Killers and Madmen Professor: Eric Smaw School: Rollins College Course: In his philosophy class, Professor Smaw is quick to point out that we all exhibit zombie-like behavior on a daily basis: “Each of us has had the experience of frantically looking around for our cell phones only to look
down and realize that the phone is in our hand, but we have no memory of ever having picked up our phone,” he says. But what about real-life cases of temporary insanity, when real-life “zombies” commit murder? Smaw says that’s not so easy: “Temporary insanity pleas are notoriously difficult to win, and most juries will be immediately skeptical.”

Paula Deen: Porn star?
Know what’s grosser than watching Paula Deen slather her food with butter and grease? Watching Paula Deen slather her naked body with butter and grease. Which is why we’re sincerely hoping that the disgraced food empire queen doesn’t accept a recent job offer she reportedly just received from a porn site. If Paula Deen accepts a job offer from a porn site, we’re canceling the Internet. According to TMZ, an adult website called PureMature.com (it specializes in geriatric sexy times) sent Deen a letter offering her a six-figure (f’real?) gig. In said letter, Deen was praised as their ideal star: “Full-figured or thin, arthritic or diabetic … you embody our perfect spokesperson.”
We’re not entirely sure who gets their jollies watching arthritic, racist old ladies engage in sex acts, but we know it’s not us. We’re happy to watch Deen publicly try and wipe that egg off her face — as for any other fluids, we’ll pass.

According to a rider that was recently leaked to the Internet (some Bieber staffer somewhere is in trouuuble), Justin Bieber has strict rules when it comes to photo shoots. The first rule of a Justin Bieber photo shoot is that one must never talk to Justin Bieber at a Justin Bieber photo shoot. (Not for nothing, kiddo, but we’re pretty sure the adults running this shoot have no interest in catching the pearls of life wisdom dropping from your pretty lips, anyway.) The second rule of a Justin Bieber photo shoot is that
one must never play Selena Gomez (sigh, we really thought those two were gonna make it) at a Justin Bieber photo shoot. We’re pretty sure that that second rule is just a general rule of thumb for any situation, anywhere. Also, laughing out loud at the menu that Biebs demands be present at every shoot: Swedish Fish, Ritz Bits Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Ritz Bits Cheese Sandwiches and two packs of Haribo cola gummies. J. Lo’s dictator party We have a lot of questions about this item. Jennifer Lopez is under fire for performing a private show in the former Soviet bloc country of Turkmenistan (including a rendition of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” a la Marilyn Monroe) for the country’s leader, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow — who is apparently not a cool guy. And by not a cool guy, we mean that Human Rights Watch has named him as being “among the most repressive [leaders] in the world” and that he’s known for rampantly violating human rights, torturing people and showing up to parties with a six-pack just for himself. (Just kidding with that last one — we’ve never partied with the dude. Jenny from the Block, however, clearly has.) And now, here come the questions. How does J. Lo even know the leader of Turkmenistan? How was this creepy (oh, we’re positive it was creepy) little private show orchestrated? How do you pronounce Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow? We are confused.

Interview with VILLAGE PEOPLE the vampire CONCERT/DANCE PARTY SATURDAY JULY 13, 2013 9 PM SHOW. DOOR OPEN AT 8 PM
Insight. Gemma Arterton talks about difficulties making the female-driven bloodsucker film “Byzantium.” Gemma Arterton is a Bond girl, but being a Bond girl in the 21st century is different than in the 20th. A small bit in “Quantum of Solace” led to major roles in other big-budget productions, like “Prince of Persia,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.” But she does smaller films, too, including two new ones. “Unfinished Song” is an English dramedy/weepie where she leads a chorus of old singers, including Vanessa Redgrave. And in “Byzantium,” from “Interview with the Vampire” director Neil Jordan, she’s a bloodsucker perpetually on the run with daughter Saoirse Ronan. “Byzantium” is one of those vampire films that goes out of its way to avoid being a traditional vampire film. I was approached really early on, when the script was still based on a play. It was totally different. The vampire aspect was a figment of the girl, Eleanor’s, imagination. It was more about mental illness and abuse, with this girl saying to her psychologist that she was living with a vampire. What attracted me was this weird relationship between the girl and her mother. I was raised with two women, my sister and my mother, who was very young.
Gemma Arterton plays a vampire on the run from evil men in “Byzantium.” / PATRICK REDMOND
It’s noticeably smaller in scale and budget than “Interview with the Vampire,” which was mostly about men. It’s hard to make movies about women, especially when they’re strong. It was really hard to make this. There was a big actor lined up for the Darvel part, which Sam Riley played. He dropped out at the last minute, and all the financing fell through — even though the part wasn’t that big. We all agreed to do it for half the fee. It was hard, but we did it. When you’re working on big-budget roles, do you try to infuse your personality into them? You do it, and usually they cut it. That happens a lot. You get the first script, and you think, “This is cool.” Then they bring in 12 other writers, and then they change it. And then in the editing room, they change
it totally. I find that really frustrating. When I do a play, you don’t f— with a play. The play is the play. With film, you can edit it and change it and do what you want. I got to a point in my career where I don’t want to do this anymore. I made a decision not to do that type of film. You just wrapped “The Voices,” which was made by Marjane Satrapi (“Persepolis”), and you have another film with Luxembourgian filmmaker Anne Fontaine. Were you consciously seeking out women directors? I never worked with a female director professionally before, even onstage. There are so many good ones out there. I don’t want it to seem weird, but working with a woman is so much more liberating when you’re a woman, because you don’t have to worry about anything.
Going 007
On being a Bond girl Yeah, I loved it. [Laughs] Because I wasn’t really in it that much. I wasn’t the main one. I always thought I’d just be a theater actor, so I thought it’d be cool to do a Bond film and then go back to
theater, and then do that forever. People always say there’s a curse of the Bond girl, but there are so many — like Rosamund Pike, I think she’s such a good actress, and she’s gone off and done other things. And Eva [Green]’s done loads. It’s not really true anymore.
It’s like with any role. If you play Jason Bourne, you have to make sure you do something else. People like to put you in boxes. You have to keep changing it.

No (or few) boys allowed
Bloodsucker saga. Neil Jordan returns to his “Interview with the Vampire world, but with women this time.
Irritating though it may be, one reason vampires are permanently in, apparently, is that there appear to be countless angles worth exploring. Just when the genre seems finally exhausted, filmmakers like Park Chan-wook (“Thirst),
Tomas Alfredson (“Let the Right One In) or Xan Cassavetes (“Kiss of the Damned) find a new way in. He returns with “Byzantium, which only superficially resembles his earlier attempt, and then not by much. Having focused on boys his first time, Jordan this time goes with girls. Based on a play by Moira Buffini, it focuses on a mother, Clara (Gemma Arterton),
and her not-that-muchyounger daughter, Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan). They’ve survived going on 200 years, mainly by constantly being on the move. It’s not just about evading mortals. The loose plot finds the two on the run from a ring of male vampires (including Sam Riley) who don’t take kindly to women. Clara drags Eleanor to a coastal town, where the former guilts a nice mama’s boy (Daniel Mays) with a newly dead mom into letting her turn his tony manse into a brothel. Girls beat the guys (but monsters beat everyone) Box office. This weekend, America ignored the year’s second “‘Die Hard’ goes to the White House” movie. Animated prequel “Monsters University” took home its second U.S. and Canadian box office title with $46.2 million in ticket sales over the weekend, fending off a red-hot debut from Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in the female buddy comedy “The Heat.” Outpacing industry projections, “The Heat” nabbed $40 million from Friday through yesterday and finished in second place, according to studio estimates. The film’s plot was similar to that of March release “Olympus Has Fallen.” Zombie thriller “World War Z,” starring Brad Pitt as an ex-U.N. crisis specialist fighting the undead, slipped just one notch to third in its second week in release, earning $29.8 million over the weekend do-

BANISHING BEACH BODY BLUES No Insurance Necessary
KIM SCHNEIDERMAN, MSW, LCSW NOVEL-PERSPECTIVE.COM Kim Schneiderman, MSW, LCSW, is a psychotherapist and former journalist with a private practice in New York City.
The question
I love going to the beach, but I hate how I look in a bathing suit. Are there ways to feel better about this? You’re a woman, right? It’s not that men don’t feel self-conscious about their bodies. But women tend to scrutinize every few extra pounds of flab and sag, comparing themselves to stars and supermodels who binge on carrots, employ private chefs to prepare light, gourmet meals and work out in home gyms with celebrity personal trainers. Yes, exercise and nutrition are important, but so is confidence. Imagine if we spent as much time loving instead of hating every inch of our bodies.
Confidence comes from within.
What a happier, healthier world it would be. A friend of mine who is trying to lose weight for health reasons has taken on a daily practice of standing in front of the mirror naked, regarding every ounce of fat with love and tenderness. “I want to love this,” she’ll say, embracing her stomach. No wonder men find her irresistible.

Dying to be thin
Could it be a bigger issue? Eating disorders are the most deadly of all mental illnesses. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, up to 24 million Americans of all ages and genders suffer from anorexia or bulimia. Anorexics refuse to maintain weight above minimally normal weight for their age and height, have grossly distorted body images and are desperately fearful of becoming fat. Some limit caloric intake, while others engage in binging and purging. People who suffer from bulimia will alternate dietary restriction with binging, purging, using laxatives and hyper-exercising, but are usually normal weight or slightly heavy. Bulimics usually feel a lack of control over their eating and use inappropriate compensatory methods to control weight gain.

Health. Not all are created equal. Here’s a primer.
More from Heller On some popular oil supplements: •
With so many cooking oils on store shelves, which is the best for you? Registered dietician Marla Heller, author of “The DASH Diet Weight Loss Solution” and “The Everyday Dash Diet Cookbook,” gave us the slick truth.
Olive oil “I always go with what’s been proven over periods of time,” Heller says. “In the Mediterranean, there are lower rates of heart disease and breast cancer, and they use olive oil. It’s monounsaturated — the kind that’s healthiest.” The wonder pour’s only caveat? “It shouldn’t be heated to high temperatures,” she says.
Soy, corn and canola oil
•
•
Flaxseed: Not so fast, she says: “I’m a fencesitter on flax. It is high in alpha-linolenic acid, which is essential for health and is antiinflammatory. But the body isn’t going to convert as much ALA from flax as it is from fish oils.” Wheat germ: Heller’s a fan: “It is high in vitamin E, and you can add it to some foods.” Evening primrose: Long used as a supplement, she says: “It has proven to have benefits.”
“These can be used for higher-temperature cooking, and are neutral-tasting oils, so they’re good for baking,” Heller says. But don’t go crazy: “You don’t want to use these too often because they’re high in Omega 6, which is
a polyunsaturated oil and is thought to raise inflammation. [Inflammation] is behind so many diseases, including heart disease.”
Sunflower oil “This is high in polyunsaturated fats, which in the 1970s were thought to be healthy,” she says. “Polyunsaturated do lower blood cholesterol, but the thinking now is that they potentially increase inflammation. Personally, I’m skeptical.”
Coconut oil “There’s been a lot of hype about it over the past few years,” Heller says. “It has a high level of saturated fat. Places where it’s used as a main source for cooking have a higher level of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. I think it can be problematic for people with high cholesterol.”

Supplements. The pills are now being pushed for heart disease. Fish oil has been touted as useful for everything from growing hair to treating depression. Now drugmakers are stepping up their promotion of its benefits for treating heart disease. AstraZeneca, Amarin and GlaxoSmithKline are betting the market for prescription fish-oil pills will follow the success of cholesterol-lowering drugs like Lipitor, once the world’s best-selling medicine. Heart disease remains the world’s biggest killer, even as statins and other treatments have become more widely used. Evidence lacking

for new ways to tackle the array of conditions that can lead to heart disease, including coupling triglyceride treatments with existing cholesterol-lowering pills for a one-two punch. “The number of people with elevated triglyceride levels is rising rapidly across the world, due in
part to the increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes,â€? AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot said when he bought fish-oil pill maker Omthera Pharmaceuticals last month. “There is a clear need for ‌ alternatives to some of the existing treatments.â€? REUTERS
Unlike capsules that can be bought in health-food stores, the drugmakers’ products are only available with a prescription, are highly concentrated and undergo a several-step purification process approved by the Food and Drug Administration. But there’s a hitch. Statins have been proven in studies to cut risk of heart disease. The benefits of fish-oil pills are less certain. Though they target triglycerides, fatty substances in the blood that have been linked to a higher risk of heart attacks, little evidence exists that the pills prevent heart attacks.

As summer gets into gear and emails pile up over coveted vacaations, we checked d in with life coach Stacy Kim, founder of the company LifeJunctions about how to make sure email overload doesn’t spoil our relaxing summers.
as multitasking, Kim says. “There is a lot of research about how our brains don’t really multitask. We don’t do two things at once, we just switch back and forth really quickly,â€? she says. All this switching between tasks is often the root of people’s anxiety and stress problems. “The more you can do just one thing at a time, I think that’s the number one sugnum gestion that I give ge eeverybody,â€? Spoiler alert: Metro’s in trouble Re: ‘Commander in crazy’ (Metro, June 2830) I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time, but your “White House Down” review is the last straw. It revealed one of the funniest cameos in another movie that’s still in theaters. Sure, the bit was very brief, but it was unexpected and one of the most memorable parts of the movie. This incident, along with others this year that spoiled more crucial parts of the actual movies your writers are reviewing, has gotten me to reconsider grabbing a Metro on Friday mornings. Please, please, please refrain
from spoiling movies in your reviews! VINNIE LEDUC, VIA EMAIL
Origins of the naming craze Re: ‘You named your baby what?!’ (Metro, June 28-30) The article says that Gwyneth Paltrow started the odd baby name craze. I beg to differ! Jada Pinkett started it with Jaden. Even another celebrity (Britney Spears) used the name. So many kids have that name now that it seems normal. NATASHA GRAY, VIA EMAIL

Devils make a draft day splash, land Schneider NHL. The Devils, Rangers and Islanders were highly active on the day of league Entry Draft. While questions swirl about the financial state of the franchise, the New Jersey Devils solidified their goaltending for the foreseeable future. The Devils acquired Cory Schneider from Vancouver for the ninth overall pick in yesterday’s Entry Draft. By landing Schneider, the Devils have the heir apparent to Martin Brodeur in goal. The 27-year-old Schneider has a career record of 55-26-0 with a 2.20 goals against average, .927 save percentage and eight shutouts. In 30 games this season, he compiled a 17-9-4 mark with five shutouts, .922 save percentage and a 2.11 goals against average. “I’m really excited to be coming to New Jersey,” Schneider told the Devils’ official website. He said that a reporter from TSN had tipped him off to the trade; then he received phone calls from Vancouver General Manager Mike Gillis and Devils Team Pres-

Espindola back on the board in Red Bulls’ win In a game they needed to win to regain momentum, the Red Bulls churned out a 2-0 home win over the Dynamo yesterday. Even with the return of Tim Cahill to the team after his participation in Australia’s successful qualification for next summer’s World Cup, the Red Bulls looked lethargic in the attack for much of the contest. But with the game beginning to smell like a listless tie, it was in the 60th

minute when Eric Alexander played a throughball to Fabian Espindola, one that perfectly split the Dynamo backline and sent the Argentine striker in alone on goal. Espindola carried the ball into the Dynamo
penalty area and slid his shot just under Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall for a 1-0 lead. “It wasn’t whatever you guys like to label as a must-win game or something. It was a very vital game to get a result,” Red Bulls coach Mike Petke said. For Espindola, it was a much-needed goal, just his fourth of the season after he opened the season with two goals on March 3. After the tally by Espindola, the game opened for New York for the final third of the match, turning into one-way traffic for the home team. KRISTIAN DYER

to make a deal yesterday, as both the Rangers and Islanders made trades with Minnesota. The Rangers acquired 24-year-old defenseman Justin Falk, while the Islanders added gritty forward Cal Clutterbuck. To land Clutterbuck, the Islanders traded Nino Niederreiter and the 70th pick in the draft. A right
wing, Clutterbuck finished the 2013 regular season with 10 points in 42 games. His 155 hits tied for eighth most in the league. The Rangers sent Minnesota their 2014 sixth round pick and Benn Ferriero.

MLB. Wheeler, Mets walloped by Nats in matinee laugher Things got so ugly for the Mets yesterday at Citi Field that catcher Anthony Recker tried his best to put a stop to the bleeding … from the mound himself. The backstop pitched the ninth inning for New York in the 13-2 blowout loss to Washington. Recker was actually better on the day than highly touted Mets rookie hurler Zack Wheeler (1-1), who was roughed up for five earned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work in his Citi Field debut. Adam LaRoche, Jayson
Werth, Kurt Suzuki and Ian Desmond all homered for Washington, which improved to 41-40 on the season. The Nats reside in second place in the NL East behind 48-34 Atlanta but will receive a large boost today with the expected return of Bryce Harper, who has been out since late May (knee bursitis). The Mets (33-45), meanwhile, are 11 games out of first in the division with a series against Arizona beginning tonight in New York. METRO
The blockbuster trade between Brooklyn and Boston that will land Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry in New York will not be finalized until July 12, two days after the NBA’s July moratorium. The trade is on hold two extra days because Kris Joseph was added to the trade late, and a player can’t be traded until three months have officially gone by since that player originally signed with a team. Heading to Boston will be three first round picks along with Joseph, Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and Keith Bogans.

Weidman is a native of Baldwin in Long Island. GETTY IMAGES
Chris Weidman was in Albany with Lorenzo Fertitta speaking to politicians about the legalization of mixed martial arts in New York when the UFC co-owner asked for a private moment. In that instant, Weidman heard the words he had longed to hear. “[Fertitta] actually said, ‘Hey, I just [want to] let you know I spoke with [UFC President] Dana [White, who] spoke with Anderson Silva [last] weekend, and you’re fighting [him],’” said Weidman, following a recent training session at Ray Longo’s gym in Garden City. “I said, ‘Awesome.’” On July 6, Weidman will challenge Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center at UFC 162. Weidman enters the fight with a 9-0 record as a pro-
fessional. He is 5-0 in the UFC. His last win was a second-round knockout of Mark Munoz last July that solidified his status as the middleweight division’s top contender. “I think he’s proven himself,” Longo said of his star pupil. “The training so far has been going great. [His] sparring looks good. I think he’ll be peaking at the right time. I couldn’t be happier.” Neither could the UFC, which is pleased with how Weidman has handled additional media responsibilities. On this day, the UFC’s in-house TV staff and News 12 Long Island were filming the session. UFC 162 marks the first time the Baldwin native will headline a pay-per-view card. “Chris has handled it well,” White wrote in an email to Metro. “It’s certainly been an adjustment for him. He’s skyrocketed to the top of the division and is now facing the greatest fighter of all time.”
